Funny how the Republicans all of a sudden want a lot more federal help and involvement in the lives of citizens.

Agreed, and straight to the point Max! Conservatives only want help when THEY need help. When others need help or assistance, THEY call it 'living on the government dole'! What ignorance THEY display! What hypocritical intonements THEY spout!

Yes, the Republicans always want to bail out their sponsors, Wall St. and international business owners, but never to bail out Main St. according to Romney and his ilk, people who live on Main St are moochers undeserving of any support, and people on Wall St. are job creators who have to be left alone to rape, pillage the country and it's people, and bailed out whenever they f.up and get burned on their get-rich-quick schemes. All they are is m-f scam artists.

it is the average person that is going to need the most help; with power gone food will begin to spoil in 24 hours; how do you cook without electricity or gas, how do the food trucks to resupply the groceries get in, they are begging for mobile cooking kitchens, only ones that have them is, Salvation Army; fema has none, army has done away with their mobile kitchens; next water, is going to be scarce, sewers backing up (need power to run water plants and sewerage plants; the next 3 days will be the worst, if it takes longer than that to restore power, we may see serious unrest. good luck people of the area, stick together and share what little supplies you have with others.

Leave it to liberals to put a political spin on a natural disaster. Amazing how its all the Republicans' fault that you did not prepare. Ever heard of hurricane kits? Got a flash light and a radio? Maybe some dry food or cereal? Did you board up? Fill the tub with water? Save a 5 gallon bucket? Take care of yourselves for once, quit bitching, and let your government take care of the ones really in need! Thank God the majority of New Yorkers have both a brain and a backbone.

Just curious. How many times has America helped foreign countries after disasters (many who are not even what you would consider our allies) either with money, food, or medical supplies? This is how we find out who our real friends are. Wait and see who offers aid. I am not saying we need aid, I just want to see who offers it and how long it takes them to make that decision.

It's astounding how the entire right wing has Romnesia. Romney promised to eliminate FEMA and let his crony corporate crook comrades get that money. How effective would a private company be able to respond in this situation if they wanted to?
It's totally shocking anyone who isn't in the upper 1% believe Romney wants to help them in any form other than constantly contradicting himself with one meaningless platitude after another. Do they have any idea what a disaster he would be? He'd make George W. look competent.

FEMA, like many other departments in the federal government, has turned into a fat behemoth of bureaucratic bs. It needs an audit and streamlined. Any government agency that says they are spending every dollar wisely is lying thru their teeth. Remember Katrina? All those trailers they were sitting on. Couldn't get them moved, had the Naugahyde smell, made people sick. 3 years later, people still staying in hotels while the government pays the bills. SUCH BS. Do you really need to stay in a hotel for 3 years to get your life in order?

It is going to be a lot longer than 3 days before power is even close to restored, this is why you stock up on non perishable supplies, canned food, dried food, fruit, m r e's etc. Water, you put plumbers putty around the bath tub plug so it doesn't leak, fill the tub, use this water for flushing a toilet, washing yourself and family(showers are not going to happen right now, deodorant is nice to have). Prepare with 5 gal. water jugs, and 1 gal jugs, tap water is ok if your tap water is good, otherwise use a water filter and fill all of these with water beforehand, that's your drinking and cooking water. I have an ro purification system I use for my aquarium, I start topping off a few days in advance, I usually have about 50 gallons of drinking water on hand. Freeze water in ziploc bags as ice packs, I also use gatoraide/poweraide for ice, they will be cold drinking water as they thaw. Use a portable bbq to cook, I also have a Coleman camping stove with 2 burners, that is really nice in these situations. As soon as you lose power move everything from the fridge and freezer into coolers with ice packs and poweraide bottles and leave them sealed, only open when necessary. This will last about two - three days, use these supplies first. A portable battery radio or hand chargeable radio is a must. No candles, they are fire starters. LED battery lantern's are good for indoor light. If you have aquariums get at least 2 battery operated air pumps per aquarium and LOTS of batteries. Make sure you have supplies for your pets as well. Power inverters will convert your car battery to a 120volt power supply, to be used very conservatively. I used 4 large 6 volt deep cycle batteries configured to make 12 volts and I can have a tv, fan, and light for about 4 days, if you live in a building generators are illegal due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure you have enough to go unassisted for 7 days. That is basic hurricane 101. If you have shutters or plywood covering your windows and are not in a flood zone, as long as a tree doesn't fall on your roof and you have all your supply's you are pretty much ready to go. Kick back relax be awed by natures fury. Believe me tv pictures do it no justice.

Romney stands by pledge to shut down FEMA
      10/28/2012 11:48pm by 119 Comments Print

UPDATE: A GOP strategist just confirmed Romney’s intention to shut down FEMA, and suggested that at a time like this nobody cares about FEMA anyway.

“We cannot afford to do those things”

We reported earlier this evening on a video from the Republican primary debates in which Mitt Romney responds “absolutely” when asked whether FEMA funding should either no longer be guaranteed and/or the agency disbanded and left to individual states to handle FEMA’s responsibilities.

Tonight, the Huffington Post asked the Romney campaign to comment on what appears to be the suggestion that FEMA be shut down, and the Romney campaign refused to deny the underlying allegation, and then appeared to explain why it’s better to, in essence, block-grant FEMA to the states.

A Romney official sought to clarify the former governor’s remarks Sunday evening.

“Gov. Romney wants to ensure states, who are the first responders and are in the best position to aid impacted individuals and communities, have the resources and assistance they need to cope with natural disasters,” the Romney official said.

      That’s clearly not a denial.

So, Romney thinks getting rid of FEMA, and leaving it to bankrupt states to figure out how to save their own citizens when we have a national disaster, is the more “moral” thing to do – Romney calls the current situation “immoral” in his video because it can lead to deficits. Romney added, when talking about FEMA and federal disaster relief: “We cannot afford to do those things.”

Remember: In Romney-land, nothing is more important than money. And the only real people, are corporations.

(Though rest assured that by tomorrow, Mitt Romney will have flip-flopped at least once, probably twice, on this as it’s difficult to formulate national policy when you don’t have your speaking schedule finalized for that day.)

I'm curious how Romney thinks devastated states, without power in many cases, are going to handle their own disaster relief on a massive scale. Without an outside national organisation like FEMA to help them. His other "bright" idea was to privatize the relief efforts. Since private companies operate on the profit motive, would the victims be charged for the food and water handed out to them. And as during Katrina and now Sandy, would the victims be expected to pay to get on the boats and helicopters coming to rescue them. Private business's want money for their efforts. Romney's ideas on FEMA,as on so many other problems, show him as not fit to be our President.

If Obama gets re-elected, there won't be enough money to pay for all of the disasters that will befall us because of his immoral decisions. Tax funded abortion, contraception, same sex marriage. If you think this is bad, wait and see what will happen in the next 4 years if he is re-elected. How long do you think God will put up with this? He's trying to get our attention here folks. ARE WE LISTENING? Superstorm right before the election? Coincidence?

This is a total lie and even Jeep release a statement saying it was so. It seem Willard will do anything to win.

I guess I shouldn't be a surprise to me anymore how some of you on either side will find a way of making damn near anything a political statement. Mitt Romney didn't have to have his tour bus used to deliver aid, but he did. I am just hoping that the death toll is not too high. It would be great if it were zero here in the US, but I know that is not realistic with a storm like this. I used to live on the east coast and have been through my share of hurricanes so I understand the awesome power of a storm like this. On top of those who will simply be unfortunate victims of things beyond their control, there are also always the idiots who simply do not get it and decide to ignore evacuation orders and "ride the storm out" or who think it is a good idea to go to the beach and try and get some "cool" pictures in the middle of the storm. When it comes to those who take stupid chances, I just hope that no emergency services personnel die trying to save them from their own stupidity. If it were up to me, I would say let them suffer the consequences of their stupidity, but I know that emergency services personnel feel a duty to try and save these people from themselves. I just hope none of them end up paying the price for on of these idiot's stupidity. It is going to be several days before we know the full impact of this storm. In the mean time all we can do is hope for the best and that most people took appropriate precautions and obeyed evacuation orders. Everyone please be safe and remember, material things can be replaced, lives can not!!!

JS inSD. I know exactly what you mean. I have lived in Fl for 40 years, and been through my share of hurricanes, and none are pretty. If I'm reading the SD right you live in South Dakota. The reason I say that is, you now live close to a really possible natural disaster prediction area. It is the Caldera area in Yellowstone National Park, a super volcano formation. Hope it never comes to life in your lifetime, because it would make the storm ravaging the Northern East Coast now look like a pleasant summer day.

Here we are in eternally sunny southern CA where weather is so polite, it only rains at night--but our college kid is near Philly at school: no power, raging fire two streets away, no food service, intermittent sirens all night long, winds howling & scratching at windows, trying to get in. She had to go yell at drunken freshmen who wanted to hang out in a dance studio--made entirely of glass. No sleep tonight, for her, or for us. This storm will cost billions. Sharktopussie: The ppl in 2004 who voted for Ralph Nader thought the same thing, and if you actually think Stein has a chance of ever being elected (you don't; nobody who cares for the environment is that stupid) then you can enjoy your calm sleep. But since you know Dr. Stein is going to lose to either Romney or Obama, don't you think you have a responsibility to make sure you aren't the reason for the election loss of the guy who stopped the Keystone Pipeline (Obama) by throwing your vote essentially in the garbage for a candidate who you know will ABSOLUTELY lose? Voting for Stein is the same as voting fo Romney, only less intentional and therefore less intelligent....at least if you vote for the enemy of the environment (Romney) you may actually have some effect one way or the other but voting for Stein is like sticking your head in a dirty toilet because you can't find the toilet brush.

those houses didn't used to be that close to the water. Due to many storms and beach erosion, homes that were 2 and 3 homesites off of the beach are now IN the ocean. Properties that used to be beachfront have long since been lost. It's a sad thing, especially if you are familiar with the Outer Banks - most beautiful place. My grandparents live there. The damage people have suffered in that area over the last few years is really sad.

Are ya'll that naive and inconsiderate. If people only built in places that were not subject to hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes then a majority of the country would be located in Iowa. Most of the water you are seeing in the pictures is storm surge, which can flood miles inland from the ocean and has nothing to do with drainage problems. I don't think anyone considers New York City a hurricane zone. If you are going to have a discussion have an intelligent one and not one reflecting your high school intellect. Erosion has nothing to do with the pictures you are seeing here. The frightening part is you reflect the thinking of people that vote for politicians, yet your lack of information is what keeps putting all these politicians in power. That is the reason Mit can run around saying things that either completely agree with Obama or completely contradict his own entire platform and still get votes because he said it.

Again they're most assuredly betting against any successful govt response to this storm and are hoping for a political angle. Americans be damned in the process - but no matter; Mitt's already written off 47% of those that will be affected by the storm.

BTW, you people who constantly critize epople for their choice on where to live. Someday it WILL happen to you. It could be a tornado, or an earthquake or something completely different. I will wait for the day for that to happen to you so I can say: "geez, dumbsh#t why do you live there? What a moron." Or I could choose to not be a republician and donate money to the redcross to help your stupid a$$ because you didn't plan for a natural disaster.

Nah... I'll do what you guys do and point and laugh, watch your life fall apart and then call you stupid and make fun of you.

                RIP United States of America.

Who builds in earthquake prone areas, near rivers, in the midwest where tornadoes are common, in the north where blizzards occur, near mountauins where there are mudslides ....THINK M355 & other blinders on types--there isn't much of the US LEFT if no one inhabits any area subject to natural disasters.

Did anyone watch the video of the moron going out across the break water on the, probably 26 ft boat? I spent 3 years as a motor lifeboat engineer at Cape Disappointment on the mouth of the Columbia River (grave yard of the Pacific) so I believe I'm qualified to proclaim...that guy is a complete moron and I hope he doesn't take anyone with him.

You know what I would argue about their living choices too, but simply put every place has a disaster waiting to happen to it, you could argue the same in people building their homes in historically fire prone areas, or in moutainanous areas where they also get flooded or mudslides, then theirs earthquakes in California, tornados in the Midwest, drought there as well, some places have noreasters, every place has its unique assemblage of disaster that could happen, should we argue, to be consistent, that they also made bad decisions?

Or could we just accept that disasters happen everywhere?

#Christy, untold numbers of people have built houses by water since time immemorial.

Just like they have built them in earthquake zone, where there are blizzards, mudslides, whatever. When my house was built 60 years ago, should the builder have known it would be in the path of a tornado 50 years later? Fortunately, tornadoes are unpredictable critters and this one swerved half block away.

If we're to live on this planet of shifting plates and uncontrollable weather, we are going to live with risk.

But it's so nice of you to expression compassion for the family who just lost their home.

I suspect the "lack of compassion" you interpret from some of these people isn't so much due to random acts of nature so much as expected acts of nature.

New Orleans was a surprise, as is the flooding that (is) occurring up north.

However, living on a beach where erosion is not only expected but witnessed on a year by year basis or the banks of the Mississippi where flooding occurs every two or three or four years are examples of the reasons for lack of compassion on some peoples part for the respective homeowners.

jkatze, by the way, just because people have done something "by water since time immemorial" does not make it a good idea. Usually, as homo-sapiens, we live, learn and evolve the way and how we live. Some people do not learn from "time immemorial" or even the last 100 or 50 years.

People like #Christy are just saying or asking "Why should I have sympathy for you if you know the threat dosn't just exist, but will be arriving within X number of years?".

...and to add to my comment, it's not that some of those people don't necessarily have a lack of compassion for people's tragedies, just their....stupidity.

That being said, I too hope for minimal or no additional loss of life or property. I don't think anyone wants to see loss of life or property (except for profiteers).

May this storm turn out to be highly anti-climatic.

Hurricane Sandy does not care about your beautiful Beach-Front property, and neither do I. Let your Insurance Co. pay for your losses; I should not have to help you as a Taxpayer. Then let your Insurance Co. raise Your rates; not mine. You want Sympathy or Compassion in return for Ignorance?; not bloody likely.

Obama could not get off the podium fast enough, and only took one obviouslly planted question. This is a serious storm and this President could not spend more time then to repeat what most local and state officials have already told us. Even President Bush took multiple questions, what was he afraid of, somebody might ask him about Bengahzi one week before the election.

SteveBaker---when Katrina hit it was about human disaster. When everyone realized how Bush and his people dropped the bucket, that is when the anger appeared. The anger was and is based on the suffering of others due to their status in our society. That being said, stop twisting things around for your benefit or point of view, we are too busy trying to deal with the situation.

We also understood while the devastation was horrible the huge hearts and prayers of the nation helped as well as the emergency personnel. Hopefully you will be as blessed as we were. Hang in there East Coast. It'll be over soon then the real fun begins - cleanup. I wish you well.

Luckily for the people about to suffer from Sandy,Obama is President not Romney. And that goes for all other people that suffer from Tornado's,Hurricanes,Earthquakes,or giant Fires,in our country. Romney doesn't intend to offer Federal aid for these disasters. He thinks its "immoral" for the Feds to help and the States or private groups only, should foot the cost of helping Americans. Most of these disasters plague the Red States the most. You should consider that Florida and Louisiana when you go vote. Here are Romney's thoughts on the subject:"

"Federal Disaster Relief Makes NO Sense at All," Mitt Romney.
During primary, Romney made it clear he does not support help from the federal government for natural disasters.
                  ....................................................................................................................................................................................

Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”

Embracing a radical anti-government ideology from the most extreme elements of the Tea Party, Romney said that the victims in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and other communities hit by tornadoes and flooding should not receive governmental assistance. He argued it is “simply immoral” for there to be deficit spending that could harm future generations:

Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.

                  Geo,

I do see it as a lack of empathy because there is nowhere in the US that is not susceptible to expected natural disasters in some fashion. I live in MN. You would think pretty safe. However, last year we got the most tornados of any state and forest fires in our northern region. We also have blizzards and some pretty mean floods. Hurricanes, tornados, forest fires, volcanos, earthquakes, floods, blizzards are all common in our nation. We cannot escape them due to our geography. It's when people lose a sense of empathy (not to mention logic and rational thinking) that they disregard these facts, blame others for needing help and pretend they are an island unto themselves.

What is wrong with you Republicons on this thread who have lost your humanity and compassion for your fellow Americans? You should be like Gov. Christie (and I never thought I'd say that). Gov. Christie realizes we're all in this together.

I pray for all those in the affected areas- that is the atlantic seaboard- great lakes area- up into Canada and anyone else who is affected. Irene was the last one for me But as another poster put it. STAY INSIDE. If during the eye you have to adjust or rebatten down plywood do it quick. Find the most INNER structer of your home (Closet bathroom, etc.) STAY AWAY from all windows, DO NOT RUN GENERATORS INSIDE....you wil die of carbon minoxide poising. Hopefully you have Wind, Hurricane insurance and will be covered but remember you ALSO need flood insurance because in NJ it isn't the wind as much as the flooding that is destroying property. Storms a slow mover, so huncker down and ride it out. It appears it is going to get much worse. NY Manhatten already flooding and Brooklyn has power out as well as Staten Island. GOOD LUCK and we'll be praying for you all Hope from NC

It is a good thing that we have one of the greatest presidents in this countries history not that idiot Georgie Bush with Dick the Dick Chaney as his main adviser when this country is experiencing something like this. I still remember that Stupid Comment by Georgie during Katrinia to his nonadviser Brown. "Good job Brownie" when New Orleans was being divested.

This president will keep people save and help them rebuild their lives. I am looking forward to going to Nathan's hot dogs in Coney Island this summer. The fat governor of New Jersey is probably worrying that his buffets will be closed for a while, not about the people. He could care less about the people of New Jersey.

Ron...really??? Glad to see Obama has enough sense to stay and see what he can do for the people affected in this storm. Unlike being informed of a 'terrorist attack' on US territory (Libya) and then going off on a campaign visit in Las Vegas. And by all means, keep up your juvenile comments about Gov. Christi...just another example of how 'lost' liberals are.

Thanks for playing though. Please try again after you, I dunno, get an education.

                    Dave,

Diplomats themselves still retain full diplomatic immunity, and (as an adherent to the Vienna Convention) the host country may not enter the premises of the mission without permission of the represented country. The term "extraterritoriality" is often applied to diplomatic missions, but only in this broader sense.

In addition, you didn't answer the 'key question'. Obama says he called the attack a 'terrorist attack' and then left for a campaign trip. First, it's obvious that 'if' he knew which he claims he did; 'why' did he not order help for the people asking for it? Second, he just left for a campaign trip and didn't do anything to help the people. Third, he claimed he said it was a terrorists attach (debate), but his administration would not call it a 'terrorist action' for 14 days....'why'??

Did you notice us good democrats never blamed dumbass Georgie or dick the dick for 9-11. How come you never said a word about the great job Georgie did for New Orleans. Get your facts correct moron and let me know when the US acquired Libya as a territory. I enjoy Las Vegas and will go there every time I could like our great president did. What is wrong with calling that fat ass Christy what he is a fat lard who know every buffet in NJ. Fu a hole

Ron, great language, just what I would expect from some liberal like you. Your a great example of a immature AH who only know how to call people names rather than have a objective debate. Sure Dems never blamed GWB for 911 because GWB WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE so why would you blame him? Regarding New Orleans, let's remember that the the Mayor of NO and the Gov of the state were DEMS and it's widely agreed THEY were the major problem with trying to get help to the city. Regarding Libya, I guess your OK with your 'great President' calling the attack on our embassy a 'terrorists attack and then going off on a campaign trip rather than (1) staying in Washington to direct efforts toward saving the people; and (2) giving orders to send help! Another example of his great leadership, right!

You should be more like your Gov. Christie, NJ John. Republican Gov Christie (NJ), who is no Obama fan, had this classy response:

I want to thank the President personally for all his assistance as w recover from
                    the storm.

Gov. Christie is taking Government aid--and is glad of it. 14 mins ago, Gov. Christie even went as far as tweeting the following:

On conf call with POTUS discussing post-Sandy cleanup efforts in partnership with the feds. He is instructing Gov't to lean forward to help.

OMG! I think Gov. Christie may even vote for President Obama next week! Wouldn't that be amazing?

By your own logic, you should not blame President Obama for Libya. He was not responsible for what our Ambassador's killers did. Even our Ambassador's father has requested that Republicons STOP blaming Obama for and politicizing his son's death.

But you have no respect and no rational reason but your hatred for our President for focusing on Libya as a tool to use against him. Shame on you!

That's right Sam, This is a natural cycle, Hurricanes have been going on since the beginning of time. In 1855,one of the greatest Hurricanes of all Time hit Grand Isle La. was it caused by global warming. And what was it that caused the Ice age to melt, was it global warming? The earth has gone through its cycles for thousands of years ,and will continue, long after man has wiped his self off the face of the earth. If you believe Al Gores Global warming story, go ahead and send him your money ,so he can fix it.

On a serious note: the prays of millions of Louisianians ,are with all our Northern brothers and sisters.

Duh, global warming is natural, almost every scientist knows this. The issue isn't it's existence, it's the speed at which it's happening. We are steadily increasing bad emissions, which can be lessened or even prevented with proper energy sources. Joe, just because you're complacent about the issue doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't happening because of us. We don't need to wipe ourselves off the face of the earth, but our oil dependency definitely isn't helping out the cause.

Joe do us all a favor and educate yourself. I know it's hard for a conservative, but please try. BTW, Al Gore didn't invent global warming or the increase in greenhouse gasses. He just made you aware of it apparently, +1 for Al. So far Joe, you've offered nothing of value, so keep your head in the sand.

What people need to realise is that all of the past events of global warming and ice ages have been causing the growth in vegetation that lock up carbon and depositing the earth and dead matter that bury this biomass and convert it into methane, oil, and gas while trapping it in earth deposits and permafrost preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. This is the first time in our earths history where we have reversed this process and instead of trapping these gases we are releasing them while stripping the planet of the very resources (biomass such as trees and plant life) that it requires to remove these gasses. Add to this the melting of permafrost which releases tonnes of methane as well and we may well see greater extinction level events than we have already caused to plant and animal life on the planet.

HARP is an urban myth... totally bogus. This is nothing else than natural variability, severely exacerbated by global warming resulting in rising ocean temperatures, and, an exceptional trifecta of hurricane, jet stream, a nor'easter, storm surge, and high tides (oops, trifecta plus one). Two hurricanes, two years in a row... I wish I could bet in Vegas on these kind of odds in my favor. Welcome to the new normal.
