Cops: Suspected looter held after being pulled from rubble of Philadelphia building

A man found in the rubble of a storm-lashed building in Philadelphia was a suspected looter looking for items to sell, police told NBC10.

While firefighters were on the scene of three-story building collapse they found a man who was then arrested for disorderly conduct.

Latest updates on Sandy from NBC News

The incident happened in Cumberland Street in North Philadelphia. Investigators say an abandoned building collapsed. No one was hurt.

NBC10 cameras rolled as firemen stood at the scene. As they were talking among themselves, a sound was heard from beneath the rubble. When they went to investigate, they found a man underneath. The firemen pulled the man out and took him to police.

More stories from NBC10.com

Police told NBC10 reporter John Clark that they believed the man was underneath the wreckage looting and looking for items to sell, such as copper. The man was arrested and will be charged with disorderly conduct, according to police.

The cause of the collapse is being investigated.

Sounds like poetic justice! Looters will emerge and partake in the "blue light specials" and thrive off of other peoples misery. Good news was this building that collapsed was already abandoned!

Looters are some of the most disgusting people on the planet. To take advantage of a disaster in this way is beneath contempt. I think that we need to adopt the stance many other countries have towards looters and just shoot them on sight or as a minimum make it legal for the owner of a property to do so.

They shoot looters for a reason ..... and a good one at that. If you want to profit from the misery of others, sell them generators and blankets. Don't steal their stuff. That not only shows lack of morals (which is also evident in the profiteers), but lack of imagination.

Both of you are correct!! Looters are despicable! Sandy is still swirling and already the gas companies--they say--are raising prices nationwide IN ANTICIPATION of service disrupts in the Northeast. We all know this is bullsh*t! The gas companies are raising prices to cover sales "losses." The fact is gas corporations should be using their unlimited profits to HELP the people in the Northeast. Bet you won't see that! The man pulled from the rubble and gas company officials are exactly the same!!

Who says those on welfare aren't willing to work? They stand on street corners operating their free-lance pharmacies dispensing unprescribed medications to those in need and also relieve the valuable items from the wreckage of those that departed for safer environs. The "abandoned" property being redistributed is keeping the insurance adjusters gainfully employed.

In no way should this guy be considered lazy - somebody had to be the first to start the whole looting effort. Get there first and get the best selection - just like it was a christmas sale.

In Florida, after a hurricane, you can hear warnings on the radio and tvs that looters on the beach can and will be SHOT, on site, by law enforcement.

Someone always gets shot looting during these tragic times.

Looters deserve to be shot on site. I have been in several hurricanes in Florida...and those are the facts jack.

"NBC10 cameras rolled as fireman stood at the scene." Oh, the heart stopping bravery! This is a non-story; an advertisement for NBC10 which mentioned itself three times in 150 words. But never mind, let's get on with the killing. Because whenever I read something as convincing as this: "Police told NBC10 reporter John Clark that they believed the man was underneath the wreckage looting...," I'm ready to kill. I don't know what the police actually said because NBC10 reporter John Clark doesn't quote anyone in this advertisement, but if he says police believed it then I am ready to kill. Do I need more evidence, or some? No I don't, but just look at him. I'm not as willing as some writers have gone to say his appearance is 100% typical. To me it is just 94.6% typical, but I would kill him just the same. Here is a good rule: If you find someone under some rubble and his appearance is more than 87.6% typical, and if an NBC10 news advertisement reports an arrest by saying police believe something, and even if NBC10 fails to tell us exactly what the police really said, then kill him. Otherwise, it's probably your Aunt Margaret under the rubble. We've always had doubts about her so if you kill her anyway, I will understand. Her appearance has never been top notch -what the heck.

One more thing. I know you are going to call me a racist because I'm killing someone based on appearance. Just to let you know; there is no such thing as racism now; unless you call me a racist; in which case you are a racist. Clear?

        #1.16 - Tue Oct 30, 2012 1:21 PM EDT

stone trouble: LOL, nice rant, "clear ?"...

Reality check, this was probably some out of work and homeless person, just trying to get by, doing whatever he can to keep himself alive. Suddenly the building he was staying in collapses around him and he finds himself buried under the rubble. If he had a hard hat on, the TV station probably would have said, "Probable construction worker caught in building collapse." The reporter really has no idea who the guy is, probably does not care, as long as he got his headline.

Interesting that there is nothing on why the police "believed" he was there with intent to steal, as opposed to perhaps just looking for shelter from the storm. After Katrina the cops shot at and arrested "looters" who turned out not to be -- any person with dark skin was automatically branded a "looter," regardless of facts. Hope that's not the case here, even though it makes for the kind of news people expect to read.

Quit making excuses rugbymom. It doesn't take a genuis to see that someones a looter. Like for instance if someone is looking for shelter why would they be carrying around a bunch of electronics and clothes. The reality is blacks tend to loot more than others in situations like this. I know people are going to be up in arms over that statement but anyone who doesn't see through the tainted lens of political correctness can obviously see this. Unfortunately reality doesn't bend to some peoples ideal view of racial equality.

        Quit showing you bigotry michelle123abc,

The story mentioned nothing about "a bunch of electronics and clothes". All it said was that he was found in a collapsed, abandoned building. Where would he have gotten the loot you mentioned from an abandoned building, creep.

        FedupwithFed,

The people that were shot during Katrina, as mentioned by Rugbymom in RI, were never filmed "running away from stores loaded down with goods" as you claim. They were found to have been innocent, while the cops were the loose cannons. Check you own reading comprehension before you berate others.

"looters" who turned out not to be -- any person with dark skin was automatically branded a "looter," regardless of facts.

Looters are limited to a particular race but blacks were not a minority in New Orleans so you figure out whart the odds of a black looter are in NO. But since you brought it up, what race did the looting in the LA riots after the Rodney King trial before the Koreans started shooting them? What was the race of the looters that were waving to the media in the helicopters flying over NO after Katrina? Guys hauling off full racks of womens clothing, two guys hauling off a bid screen TV (gonna catch rthe news as soon as electricity is restored in a week), etc.

There are always looters and Katrina was the pivotal point because of their brazen attitude. The poor stay behind during any natural disaster and risk injury hoping for a profitable haul because the others leave and "just claim it on their insurance".

Unfortunately reality doesn't bend to some peoples ideal view of racial equality.

Does racial equality mean that all races must be represented in the looter career field or that the looters should only be arrested in equal numbers or that one race should not be allowed to profit (by dollar value or quantity) from looting more than another? While looting is not limited to one race there are those who are irritated when the predominant race is identified. They consider that racism. Is it also racist to say that blacks dominate basketball and football?

Maybe in the NE looters are primarily African American, but here in OKC it is whites that are endangering their own lives, as well as others when the strip copper from churches, schools, office buildings, and even power substations. I'd guess from the looks of a lot of them they were looking for a way to get more $$ for drugs such as meth, cocaine, and perhaps heroin. Yes, they even come out after disasters here also.

Shoot the looters. They are not worth keeping in society.

I hope the store owners will pull out the big guns and protect their stores. Shoot on site.

So, in the northeast theft is considered 'disorderly conduct', but walking around naked is a threat to cops and you can be shot!

Caught the special on cbs last night, and guess what....the refinery's "MIGHT" have some problems....big surprise eh? ..

so if / when BHO allows them to gouge people for NO reason... rather then put his foot down and declare you WONT take advantage of this..., like we know he wont.....what do you think will happen? And whats his excuse? he already made his "declarations" and told fema to go to work, everything else is mere photo-op, and trying his best to "look presidential"...wonder how many will even notice the difference between what he will do and what he should doing RIGHT NOW......

                          Hi, Scooter,

In my area, the hurricane didn't come near us and the gas prices were raised two days ago "in sympathy" for the East Coast, I guess...

Who knows? If the guy was out in that weather, taking a chance on his life crawling around under a collapsed building looking for something to salvage and sell, in this economy, perhaps taking him to jail was doing him a favor.

It was an abandoned building, not a thriving business. He was taking a dangerous gamble on his life.

You can't fix stupid. This guy is a Darwin runner up at least. I bet he did not even say thank you to the Firemen that pulled his sorry butt from the building.

Why is it always a black person? Stereotypes will never go away if they are re-enforced time and time again. If the black people want things to change then they have to do it from the inside out. Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me. Not only robbing someone on their belongings that they paid for but taking advantage of a situation like a super storm to do it. They should have let his black ass die in that building.

Blacks commit about 70% of the crimes so odds are high it will be a black person committing the crime.

This scum should've been shot dead on site saving the taxpayers the cost of a trial and serve as a possible deterrent for others considering doing the same!
