Sandy's aftermath: How you can help

Adam Hunger / Reuters

Emergency personnel rescue residents from flood waters brought on by Hurricane Sandy in Little Ferry, New Jersey, October 30, 2012.

Updated Nov. 8: If you want to help those hurt by the storm, you can donate to these organizations; some of them have options to donate via text message, as well as by phone or online:

BREEZY POINT FUND RAISER
One of the most badly damaged communities in Sandy's wake is Breezy Point, Queens. Catholic University student Matthew Petronis created this fundraising page to help his community rebuild. "I have seen the damage and can say that the place where I grew up during my childhood is almost gone," he wrote on the page, "but that is not the case for the children that are growing up now!"

Though smaller instant charities are not always recommended for donating (for reasons discussed below), NBC News reporters have interviewed Petronis, and verified his story.

WHAT ELSE TO THINK ABOUT
We'll be updating this list.

Remember that while giving is good, beware of those out there who are not good and are trying to trick you by taking your money. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene last year, the Federal Trade Commission's caution still holds true: "Scammers may try to take advantage of a disaster, and so consumers should be wary of urgent appeals for charitable donations, and watch out for fraudulent home repair schemes after a storm."

You can read more about avoiding home repair rip-offs and charity fraud from the FTC.

Also, the FBI has counseled on its Facebook page "to beware of fraudulent emails and websites claiming to conduct charitable relief efforts. Disasters prompt individuals with criminal intent to solicit contributions purportedly for a charitable organization or a good cause," and suggests reading "Tips on Avoiding Fraudulent Charitable Contribution Schemes" to learn more about avoiding online fraud.

Thanks Dianna... rather give to them than any group associated with FEMA! After Katrina.... shouldn't we realize by now, that FEMA is incapable of providing any adequate relief?

Is there a non-religious based charity that I can donate clothing to? When I give, I give too all, not just those who are like me. I force no man to pray, go too church or anything else that they do not want to do to get the help they deserve as my fellow human beings.

For the record, I'm calling out Red Cross and Salvation Army, who give too those types of Christians I hate. Ones who can't decipher those 10 little rules in your own rulebook.

Thank you, trust, for a good chuckle. There are many organizations that don't ask what the recipients' beliefs are, but it looks like you don't want to give to any religious organizations or to any one who believes in any religion, period. Atheists are not noted for charity programs. Perhaps you can start one?

As for donating clothing, if it's used, there has to be time to clean it and make sure that it's not ripped or otherwise ruined. Unless you send it directly to the recipient, chances are it's going to be very late getting to where it can be distributed. I used to run a school clothing exchange, and it was awful how little people thought when they donated clothing.

My heart goes out to every one affected by Sandy.

It would probably be too much to hope for to expect Wall Street too big to fail banks to kick in several billion to help in the recovery of this disaster.

Yesterday (Sat.) - 5 days after this terrible storm the Red Cross is finally on Staten Island. Doing what? Serving coffee!! No food, no water. No clothes, no shoes, no blankets. You know who gives out that stuff without asking your name and address? just about everyone but the red cross. give to the others! What a mockery, and I now I find out police from around the country will be deployed in areas needed to protect against thugs or whoever. Kinda contradicts the nbc story headline above "crime down after Sandy" Can't blame this on someone else, so hide it to protect the one.

we can only be concerned about how we help -- not worry about what banks are doing..that does not good. you have no idea how many individuals of those banks may be contributing. Just do your part.

For the rest of you i.e. sharriannie, if the Koch bros, Adelson, all those deep pocket, fly under the radar bankers and venture capitalist contributors, etc. etc. jumped out of Romney's hip pocket - they could rebuild the eastern seaboard.

I couldn't have said it better myself. The one thing that is back to normal in all this, is the whinning and complaining by these people who won't do anything for themselves. They would rather spend their time complaining about how no one is helping them out.

I also could care less who wins the election. I would vote for a monkey before I would vote for these two Bozos.

Then you'll be disappointed newscover, Romney is currently in the midst of a food and money drive to help the people. You could try getting a phot op with Obama walking a beach.

BTW, according to a NBC rip on Romney, all of the above contact information and suggestions posted here for relief agencies are bogus.

No matter how you slice it, Romney jumped in and started working to raise donations. I do believe that is something that he does quite frequently, so beat him up if you will, but if you beat him up for being smart and giving, well then you can just keep Obama and I sincerely hope we will be doing far better in 4 years than we are right now. Remember, you have to vote Obama in to see what he really means, something like that came from Pelosi a year or two ago. Obama is very likable, but right now we need a strong person to take a stand and build the USA up - not down and one that knows how to build and make the USA stronger and better. Also, one that does NOT bow to muslim anything - kings or princes or whatever - not ever.

Ah....TeaRunner - you'll want to do a bit of research on that food drive. Check the multiple stories on Mitt's WalMart $5,000 spending spree - canned goods. Sent the staffers on the spree, they decided better to have Mitts there in front of the 'donations' - or those the staffers bought at a late night WalMart shopping spree. Seems when folks came in for their photo op with Mitts - a staffer shouted they needed a donation for a pic with Mitts - the staffers just kept handing the goods they'd purchased at WalMart to these good folks for a nice photo op. That is not to say some didn't come with donations - not at all. Just as with Mitts ever changing - slight of hand, non-existent platform - he pulls this one for the good folks on the eastern seaboard. Character, concern...Mitts just oooooozes it don't he - one event - at a place/state where he was already scheduled to campaign - just changed the name - for one single event?

http://www.inquisitr.com/383047/mitt-romney-storm-relief-event-staged-campaign-spends-5000-on-donations-for-event/ just for starters - keep looking - lots to see - lots of photos of the staging - Mitts of course - no where to be found helping out.

Please DO NOT DONATE to the HSUS to help displaced pets. Your hard earned money WILL NOT reach pets in need related to this disaster. The American Kennel Club CAR (Companion Animal Recovery) has a reputable pet crisis fund in place and your money would better help pets in need than sending it to the HSUS. Please see the American Kennel Club website for more information (akc dot org).

Hasan -- most of the small groups that actually help out in diasasters never are reported by US News agencies. For example, I have friends who went to help in Haiti after the big hurricane there. The father is a builder, so he worked to help build an orphanage; his daughter (my friend) set up a school at the orphanage and adopted three children from there. -- You may be a Christian from Turkey or may be Islamic. I recommend you contact some American Islamic group [or Catholic group] from NY City or NY State. They will be able to tell you the names & emails of small groups who are actually working to bring change. I did this after Hurricane Katrina. I was able to help one family get employment at my company in UT (via a telephone interview). I was able to indirectly (through a Catholic priest in New Orleans] help about three other people in significant ways after Katrina.

"I cannot do everything - but I refuse to do nothing!" If I can help 5 families from NY I will be happy. Maybe some other readers will think of a way to each help 3-5 families.

Everyone should look back a few years and remember all the inclement weather disasters that have happened. I feel we should take a serious and harder look at our environment. There has been just too many weather-related disasters such as the east coast disaster for it to just be coincidental. And FEMA should stay intact, in my opinion. State officials are just too overwhelmed when such incidents happen in their state to handle such a huge responsibility timely. May God bless all those affected by this terrible storm, and the rest of us can donate whatever amount of money we can to the Red Cross. That will be the most helpful rather than a clothing and food drive as Romney did while campaigning at the same time.

Please also give to your local Humane Society shelter. The national organization of the Humane Society does NOT financially support local shelters. All shelters are self-supporting through donations and private fund raisers.

These local shelters throughout the United States will be taking in the animals lost and abandoned due to this tragedy. Call your local and ask what help they need.

It'd be nice if the President and/or the Governors of the worst-affected states would declare a three-month moratorium on rents, loans, and mortgage payments for people and companies under a certain amount of net worth (obviously not rich people and businesses).

If there's no public transportation, people can't get to work. If they can't get to work, they can't pay their rent. If their landlords can't collect rent, they can't pay their own mortgages.

Redirect all aid to the middle east to the east coast for the next six months or until this mess is cleaned up. If the bobbin q-tips don't like it tough.

I would like to help the community that had the fire where many of the firefighters lost everything. Does anyone know how to directly help them?

nice to see MSNBC haveing a article on where to help, unlike a certain competitor f*x reports on what companies to invest in to make some money out of Sandy.

An article on how to help and a majority of people on here are turning it into politics and "I'm-not-helping-them" comments. Makes me pretty disgusted.

Nicely done people. I hope those of you who were involved in mud-slinging at such a bad time are proud of yourselves.

On another note..if you don't have the money to help...I'm sure they'll be calling for volunteers shortly. Time is so valuable. I know I have no money to give but I am already keeping my eyes open for opportunities to serve :-)

Lutheran World Relief is also helping and you may contribute through your local Lutheran Church. LWR does world-wide aid of all sorts and is present along USA coast!

Donation were given here in CO for the victims of the theater shooting, it is still in the courts, the people have not received any money. I would rather have a list of names and donate to the families, not organizations, they are as crooked as anything else.

It's always amazed me the excuses people will make not to help and your comment sounds like one of them.

They are not all crooked as anything. Habitat for Humanities is a great organization and you can't go wrong donating to the Salvation Army. I know someone who works in a local Habitat store as an assistant manager and she said the pay is lousy because the majority of their money is used as intended. At the same time I have a pretty long list of organizations that pay their higher-ups so much money there is very little left to put toward their so-called causes.

Anybody for a Chicken sandwich? It's because they are Light amoung darkness and the Light shines when it is out in the open. They are not of this world, now is their Saviour, Jesus. Those evil minded Christian organizations were very happy to help us in MA. after the tornado we had recently. No questions asked for donations in the future or our religious beliefs. They helped us when others wanted us to give so much information you would have thought we were applying for a loan. And when most peoples personal and financial papers and documents were literally gone with the wind we were and are very grateful to them!

They did not ask our religious beliefs or even request we make a donation in the future. We are very grateful for their help. They helped us quickly. And I can't Thank the churches and their members enough or the hot meals - food - clothes - supplies - even pet food , and anything else we needed. And no we are not Christian. What have you done to help !

Why advertise your christianity if you don't have an agenda? Why hold your chicken sandwich hostage for Jesus? Why not just be truly charitable and "give with your right hand so that your left hand does not know it."

                                      How can I help?

By pointing out the September 3, 1821 hurricane that flooded New York. Tide rose 13 feet in one hour.

The 1938 Cat 3 hurricane that flooded New York.

The three Cat 3 hurricanes that hit the east coast in 1954. Carol in August, Edna in September and Hazel in October. Hazel was a full moon, cold front hurricane just like Sandy. Hazel's storm surge was 15-18 feet.

But a tropical storm (Irene) and Sandy (Cat 1 hurricane) is supposed to be proof of man made climate change.

The CO2 levels were certainly lower during that 1821 hurricane and the three Cat 3 hurricanes in 1954.

What is a link between 1821, 1954 and today is the warm cycle of the AMO, (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation). The cycle is roughly 60-70 years. While it has only been 55 years since Hazel more east coast hurricanes are forecast since the weather patterns are returning to how they were in the 1950s. Then subtract two cycles from 1954 and you go back to 1820. Wait, didn't New York get flooded in 1821?

And the top three hurricanes for the highest amount of damage in 2012 dollars all happened prior to 1930. Today the US is setting a new record for the longest time since a major hurricane has hit. Florida hasn't been hit by a hurricane in 7 years. And July of this year set a new record for the fewest tornadoes.

If climate change means weaker storms than in 1821, 1938 and the 1950s I think we should count ourselves blessed.

Too bad Obama did not take his bet, he could have showed his "credentials" and would have had 5 mil to donate to Sandy victims - go figure - something to think about.

Doesn't it make more sense for Trump to just donate the $5 million himself without involving anyone else? Why should Obama respond to Trump's ridiculous need for attention over & over & over?

Now is not the time to elect someone that won't help 47% of all Americans. Now is not the time to cut a program that has 500 billion in assets, not only able to help victims of Sandy but the next few emergency situations to come. FEMA is not going broke, our Government (President Obama and the American People won't let it). Support FEMA and the 47% that may need our help!

I do not have Cash Money to give. Like the lady in NJ said she is on disability and no job. I am in the same situation here in KY. BUT, I do have a storage unit with all my household items from my precious first home of 10 years that I could donate to a person in the same position as myself, as it is looking more and more that I will never be well enough to get out on my own again. I'm home living with my mother since I was hurt on the job in 2001. Work Comp has done NOTHING for me. So if someone of whom really needs and would appreciate my stuff would like it, I would be more than happy to donate it.
