Cops: At least 3 shot during Halloween celebrations in Hollywood

LOS ANGELES -- At least three people were shot during Halloween celebrations that became unruly in Hollywood late Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Whitley Avenue, Los Angeles police Sgt. Andrew Chao told City News Service.

A 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest and leg, and taken to the hospital in critical condition, Chao told CNS. A 14-year-old boy was shot in the foot and a 25-year-old man was struck in the buttocks, Chao said. The pair was transported to the hospital.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter or shooters were apprehended, though aerial footage of the scene showed at least two people being detained by LAPD officers.

Officers were already deployed in the area due to Halloween celebrations. Unruly crowds began to form up and down Hollywood Boulevard throughout the night, and it appeared that as soon as officers stabilized one area, another area would erupt in violence. Early reports suggested revelers were fighting and throwing bottles.

Dozens of cops in riot gear started responding to Hollywood and Highland shortly after 10 p.m.

Largely-costumed crowds spilled into traffic, ran in between cars and confronted officers starting as early as 9:30 p.m.

A skirmish line of mounted officers was briefly stationed at the intersection of Hollywood and Wilcox. Throngs of officers on mounted patrol, bicycles and motorcycles descended on the area. Several LAFD crews were also on scene.

Halloween celebrations in Hollywood pale in comparison to those in adjacent West Hollywood, where some 400,000 people were expected to attend the annual Costume Carnaval.

Still, Hollywood has become an increasingly popular spot for Halloween revelers and hundreds lined the streets Wednesday night.

Nothing says Trick or Treat better than degenerates shooting people. Hey you gang bangers out there, get a life and stop killing people! Your sideways aiming a gun usually hits someone other than your intended target.

For the past decades, Southern California has descended into a Holloween nightmare. Blue and white collar crimes have become synonymous with the raping of Los Angeles.

As powerful police and fire labor unions with their corrupt politicians awarded generous wage and benefit contracts, the Los Angeles City has been insolvent as many decades despite 'creative' revenue enhancement such as fee-for-government services that were once the reason for government's existence ; expedient regulations that requires City inspection fees and fines; and aggressive petty traffic enforcement coupled with heavy penalties.

Despite the increased revenues supposedly to fund the police department, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is known not for reducing crime but a fraternity of psychopaths who brutalize citizens and sometimes even kill the innocent rather protecting the residents, and the lazy-do-nothing patrolmen who ride around in their air-conditioned vehicles pretending to "Protect and To Serve," or loitering around their favorite donut shops.

Business owners have become so distrustful of the LAPD's effectiveness and characters that almost every large and medium business from Malls to large shopping centers to medium size town centers to even the local supermarkets have hired private guards to protect business, employees, and customers. If effect, the business owners are forced to pay twice for peace of mind: wages to private security guards and taxes to the LAPD.

The combination of a perverted City government and high crimes have turned Los Angeles into the late stages of Detroit as WhiteFlight has left the City in desperation for human and financial capital. Like Detroit, the urban blight and fright have spread beyond the City's infamous South Central into adjacent areas such as Hollywood, Mid-City and beyond as the disease has quicken. In contrast to Detroit's reverting to a green urban farm, Los Angeles will be reverting to the beige semi-acrid desert from which it had sprung. While Detroit is already dead and buried, Los Angeles is breathing its last breath just before the start of rigor-mortis.

Seems LA is doing things similar to Detroit's Hell Night in the past - starting fires and all kinds of stuff. LA takes it 1 step further with the shootings!

I remember as a kid there was Soap night on 29th where we soaped windows with "cute" messages, then the 30th was Mischief night - things like ring the doorbell and a flaming bag of dog doo for the resident to stomp out, but man, now they are taking it over the top with 400K people at the event in LA, that is larger than most cities, population-wise. Wonder if they would qualify those incidents under the UCR for just the area of Hollywood?

I haven't been in any state or city that this wasn't the case, you seem to think this in LA is unusual. No matter how effective cops are crime will never go away, it's committed for its own reason not because the cops are ineffective.

Just think if this happened in Florida. There would be a defense that the shooter feared for his life because a vampire was about to attack him. He would probably walk with Florida's stand your ground law. So you can blame ineffectiveness for LA's crime but in Florida you can blame the law.

The remake Red Dawn has the Chinese invade US rather than the Russians/Cubans in the original. I'll probably wait until it is on cable to view and critique it rather than spend $$ to see it. The original had a great story line!

    #1.9 - Thu Nov 1, 2012 12:28 PM EDT

Not China - the invader is N. Korea this time. The original had a mixed message that was lost on most viewers. it started with the familiar 'armed citizens will stop the invasion with their hunting rifles' theme. However it then evolved into the more realistic theme that a small band of armed citizens are ineffective against military weapons and tactics. If you recall, it took the arrival of a million Chinese troops to repel the invasion and by then the little guerrilla group was down to its last 2 fighters.

Anti-gunners are as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning--any time there is a mention of a gun involved, they pounce like the brainwashed lemmings they are. There was an article recently where a 12 year old girl defended herself with a firearm and the antis still bitched and moaned. Hatred/fear of inanimate objects is a sure sign of low cognitive abilities. You can't fix stupid.

People gathered to celebrate a traditional holiday, not to be attacked by someone who was carrying a gun. The shooters should be apprehended, arrested and convicted of attempted murder. This is not part of our lifestyle. There is absolutely no reason to carry a deadly weapon into a crowd with the intention of harming someone. Anyone who participates in such behavior is unstable and should not ever have possession of a firearm. It takes a better person to walk away from negative comments or actions than to act upon them. Again, another celebration ruined by criminals.

How about this Sharon.... How about not letting the PERSON who's intention of harming someone NOT be allowed to mix with people... It's called prison. Chances are that this person committed some other form of violence before this incident. So ask yourself why didn't this person serve enough time?? or why let this person into a crowd??

As the "story" has no indication as to what transpired previous to the shooting, you've made a big leap in your assumption.

Have you considered that it might in fact be justified? Were the "victims" actually assailants that accosted the wrong individual?

9mm, I have never seen anyone so intent on finding justification of using a gun as you are. How paranoid can you possibly be to get your jollies by someone getting shot?

It makes no diference to me who started what. Just wishing the wounded well and hope they heal quickly. I carry an old 1911A1,and know what it can do. Getting shot hurts like heck.. If the shooter can prove just cause, OK... Otherwise the shooter needs to spend some quality time with Bubba in the state pen. I just think it is a sad state of affairs when people use a gun first. Rather than an absolute last resort.

Granted, Cali-for-nee-ah in general, and Hollywood/LA in general, seems to be a magnet for this type of stuff...

Ahhh, the northeast, where we have to swim to work, due to Hurricane Sandy...

Interesting how the parts of the country with the strictest gun control laws are also the most violent. Seems like criminals could care less about firearms laws just as they do other types of laws. Perhaps, just maybe our societal ills are related to sociopathic individuals and their complete disregard for the rest of us non sociopaths? Too radical a concept, I know...

                                    WGer,

Don't disagree with you one bit, some day get yourself into a position (volunteer ride-along program or something) to ask a repeat offender who is on parole why he was just stupid enough to repeat. I have gotten the same answer multiple times "jail ain't no thing" and then they laugh. Simply told, risk VS. reward, there are a bunch of them that don't believe there is very dang much risk. Some live in such crappy conditions every day in the real world that even as bad as a upper lower class or above citizen thinks prison is, it is actually cleaner and safer than a lot of repeat offenders hoods. Also, since gangs have practically taken over the prisons because we are not permitted to exercise greater control, bangers know they have "family" on the inside. How is that for completely screwed up?

Worse yet, who is the threat of a prison sentence a real threat for? Truly only those who are more likely to not break the law in the first place, who have a home life they really care about to lose.
