Near-freezing temps add to Sandy misery; potential nor'easter looms

TODAY's Al Roker takes a look at the European model forecast that predicted Sandy, and its new forecast of a potential Nor'easter next week, bringing wind gusts of up to 45 mph.

Millions trying to recover from Superstorm Sandy were not getting much cooperation from Mother Nature: Lows this weekend were set to dip into the 30s, an issue for elderly and others without power, while a nor'easter winter storm is possibly on its way.

"We just want to get heat so we can survive at night," a resident of Essex Falls, N.J., told NBC 4 New York on Friday, four days after her power went out. "It's so cold out."

"Everybody's tired of it already," Rosemarie Zurlo, a resident of New York City's West Village told NBCNewYork.com.

She said she planned to leave her powerless, unheated apartment to stay with her sister in Brooklyn. "I'm leaving because I'm freezing. My apartment is ice cold."

On top of the cold, the National Weather Service's prediction center, in a Friday update, cited the "potential for a nor'easter along the Atlantic Coast next Wednesday and Thursday."

"No rest for the weary," it added.

The system wouldn't be another Sandy, but it could build off North Carolina next Tuesday, then move up the coast and affect New Jersey, Long Island and other hard-hit areas by Wednesday.

"The possible storm next week is not of the same make up as Sandy," prediction center forecaster Jim Cisco told NBC News, "though any more rain, snow or wind would certainly pose exacerbating effects on the impacted regions."

"This is just what we don't need," added NBC News meteorologist Al Roker, saying winds could gust up to 45 miles per hour.

"You look at those winds coming counterclockwise, bringing in with it the potential for one to two more inches of rain ... and wet snow inland just along the New York/New Jersey border," he said. "We're talking about wet snow mixing in."

Those gusts along with waves in "already compromised beaches along New Jersey and Long Island ... could cause big problems," Roker added.

Homeowners in suburban New York are depending on generators until electricity is restored as others are rushing to buy them – to prepare for future storms. TODAY's Jenna Wolfe reports.

"It's not definite," he emphasized, but two key models used by weather forecasters are in agreement "that this is going to happen. It's just a matter of how strong this system is going to be."

The Weather Channel echoed that concern.

"At this point we do not expect the impacts to 'break anything that is not already broken'," weather.com winter weather expert Tom Niziol wrote Friday. "However the combination of weather impacts will add insult to injury for the recovery process along the East Coast."

NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins said that while the new system would have only a fraction of Sandy's power it comes at a vulnerable time. "Its greatest impact will be battering waves along the Sandy impact zone," he predicted. "Beaches/structures have no protection from wave action at high tide cycles until the dunes can build back up."

"Other impacts are very minor," he added. "Rain/winds could delay line crews restoring power and there would be some danger  of falling already loosened tree branches."

Even before any nor'easter, Northeast residents were told to expect evening low temperatures to dip a few degrees into the low-to-mid 30s over the weekend.

New Yorkers can expect a stiff breeze Saturday morning to make it feel like it's in the 20s, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The utility Con Edison is working to restore power to some 226,000 customers in Manhattan by Saturday, but that would still leave some 350,000 of its customers elsewhere in New York City potentially in the dark beyond Saturday.

Con Edison said it hoped the vast majority of those would have power by Nov. 11.

As for a potential nor'easter, Con Edison spokeswoman Sara Banda told NBC News that "we're going to have to take that into account."

The areas taking the longest for restored power, Banda said, are those with overhead lines. "It's taking a bit longer," she said, noting that crews have had to deal with 100,000 downed lines.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Friday warned New Yorkers about using candles to provide heat, noting that at least one home caught fire as a result.

"I know it's chilly, I know you want to have light at night," he said, "but don't leave candles unattended."

New Jersey has also been hard hit with outages, and many homes there were told not to expect power until next week.

In Beachwood, 11-year-old Zach Molino took matters into his own hands -- and wagon -- by biking around his neighborhood to collect wood from fallen trees for his family's fireplace.

Across the region, 3.5 million homes and businesses still were without power Friday afternoon, according to a tally from the federal government.

I recall that during Katrina, many folks claimed that Bush left New Orleans residents on their own because he was white and they were mostly African-American. They claimed he did not care.

Is that what we see on Staten Island, an African-American president leaving a mostly white populace to fend for themselves without food or heat?

If Obama cares, why is he on the campaign trail looking after his job, while so many of his citizens are going hungry & freezing?

According to the Katrina aftermath, the president is supposed to be leading the effort, not ignoring the people.

The small minded did make some claims about Bush that were unfair, but true!!!! In Obama's case, he did show up, did initiate efforts to assist victims. If we can move beyond the foolishness, there is a bigger issue. With Katrina we (people in general and our government) failed to see that climate change has real consequences. With Sandy maybe we will be motivated to begin to change our lifestyle to truly respect nature and what it may mean to be responsible stewards of the Earth. I don't think nature gives a damn about Bush or Obama.

Well then I would say this is the perfect time for all those 1%ers to "self tax", like they say they will if they continue to get thier tax breaks. Isn't that Romney's plan? But then again, making sure the symphony gets new seating might be more of a priority then helping out fellow Americans that really need help.

Don't worry Big O had union workers ferried with their trucks by airforce transport so that proper overtime, travel expense and hazard duty pay is properly credited to union accounts, courtesy of President Hussein Obama.

Well Rich-827064, once again you have demonstrated ignorance and mediocrity reign in our country. If anything I hope people learn that no matter how powerful our government is or how rich our country is, future disasters such as Sandy may be too big for quick solutions and different intervention paradigms may be needed. These people in the Northeast are in a tight spot. Maybe relocating them to warmer climate while federal and state entities clean up the mess is a good solution. Sometimes a fresh start is good for the soul.

Again people commenting on Staten Island that know nothing about SI. Staten Island has always been staunch republican strong hold. I lived there for 35 years of my life and it has always had a Republican borough president. So I guess what you call wieners, they are most likely republicans. Just thought you would like to know.

As Trace Atkins notes in song: Tough times don't last, tough people do.

Hang in there folks. Things WILL get better.

Maybe now people will start to realize that they can't depend on the government for everything. There's a lot to be said for personal responsibility. The only ones that really care about you and yours are you and yours. Others can provide a little help when necessary, but the bulk of the work is on your own shoulders.

A good bet would be to establish shelter and aid centers in central locations in each of the affected areas. This would allow quicker response to situations and allow people to more readily get what help and aid they require. It is a good thing that Fema wasn't privatized as Romney wants to do. No private company is going to provide aid unless there is a profit to be made. Private corporations would have taken up to a third of the available dollars off the top as operating expenses and profit. Since these companies would have been located within the affected areas in a case such as this another large chunk of available dollars would have gone to the companies first for storm related damages as they would claim that they could not provide aid without first repairing their own assets in order to properly be able to provide aid. Most private companies would take what money they could then declare bankruptcy as the cost of recovery would be overwhelming and the people that were relying on them for services would have no where else to turn except back to the federal government and what was left of FEMA. Even state agencies could not handle a disaster of this magnitude without federal aid. Private companies are for profit agencies and will not operate at a loss. We need to assure the American people that FEMA and agencies like them will be there when disasters happen and not a private agency that may bail out on us if they don't see a profit to be made.

My heart and hopes go out to those that are affected and I wish for them a speedy recovery.

But President Obama's favorite supporter and fund raiser NYC Mayor Bloomberg is having a party for 45,000 marathoners and evicting all those nasty people who had their homes and possessions destroyed in the storm. "Let them eat cake," howled President Marie Hussein Obama as he put on his party gear with First Lady Michelle's 3,500 personal entourage who help her with her child care issues. Unbelieveable how these peons subsist.

Don't wait on the government. If you can spare a few bucks to help out the people in the disaster area, then please do it. Send it via the organization of your choice, but just send it if you can spare it.

I'm a staunch conservative. It doesn't matter to me that the money I gave will be sent to help those who are mostly going to be Obama supporters. There are some things politics just needs to be kept out of. This is one of them.

On occasions like these, can't we just throw the politics out the window, if even for only a few days, in order to get some help to those who need it? When you or your kids have been through something like this, and you need something warm in your stomach, I don't care what your politics are. I'll do what I can to help, even if that is only getting some cash to the people doing the real relief work.

I have lived in the northeast all my life and been through many hurricanes and nor'easters and it is something you never get used to. Sandy was bad as was the October blizzard last year, blizard of 78 and huricanes Bob,Irene, Gloria etc. and one of the worst was the ice storm of 2008. But i cant even begin to imagine what a catagory 5 would be like if it was to hit here. I dont think its a matter of if but when it will happen. And if it does god help us all.

                  Reply#73 - Fri Nov 2, 2012 2:56 PM EDT

So given your list of storms, the leaders of NYC (and the surrounding area) have to be aware of these problems and have done nothing about preparedness? Shame on them. They need to raise some more taxes and get better prepared instead of relying on an increasingly ineffective Federal Government.

BTW, a Cat 5 will erase most of the area through 135+ mph winds and hellacious flooding from the storm surge. See below for definition of Cat 5 damage.

Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. Flooding causes major damage to lower floors of all structures near the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas may be required.

That last part is the killer, during the 1960s it was estimated it would take weeks to evac NYC, "if everything went smoothly".

Sandy has left millions of people that are in need of help. They have no heat, water, some no clothing, food and they are desperate for help. Many are to proud to ask for help, other will not ask for help because they are afraid it will take help away for someone that is in worse need than themselves. To make this a political issue is wrong. There are good and bad people in this world. It would be nice if we reported the actions of the good and not the actions of the bad. Our actions and re-actions are decided by our surrounding and the information we are able to see and read. By reporting the actions of every idiot, crook, and stupid person we are doing a great dis-service to those doing good. I am more willing to send money and help when I hear about the good it is doing. Right now it seems all I hear is bad, fighting, guns, crime, volunteers being asked to leave, and just negative crap. We as a people are better than this, our country is better than this. It is time to say enough is enough. Quit watching all these news shows that do nothing but bash, and turn us against each other. Lastly, the New York Marathon. If I was a participant I would start a movement to have everyone show up for the Marathon and when the starting gun fires instead of a Marathon all participants go and take clothing, food, medicine, water, and help those in need. This would show the world what champions are made of. There is a time to compete and a time to compete to help others. Which time is this New York? Make the Marathon something the world will never forget.

It's pretty bad here in New York. My house is dark and has been since Monday but, then again, I'm health enough to deal with it. My office has power and I have been busy working at recovery.

A lot of people here are not nearly as lucky as I am. They are old and sick, some have lost their homes and they could be in a very bad way this weekend if it gets cold enough. It is those people that I have been thinking about every night when I go to bed in my home without heat and I wonder how they will make it through another day.

A situation like this is a real eye-opener. What you see everywhere are good people who want to help or at least who try to offer some kindness to their neighbors. You begin to feel hopeful but then, of course, you read a blog and you are brought back to the word of intolerance and ignorance and you say" God help us!

The reality is that our federal and state governments are overwhelmed and digging ourselves out of this is gonna take more time then some of these people have. Sometimes it is just smart to walk away, walk away. Why not repatriate those who are willing to another part of the country with a house, car and job. Then our governments can take the time to reclaim the physical area in a more methodical manner and these families can begin the healing process. Just a thought.

Because that takes money no one really has to spend. Besides most of those people do not want to be repatriated. They want things to go back to "normal" ... now.

Yep....it ain't my job, where is the Feds? It seems that building on sand is like building on the San Andreas fault in California. So, a roller coaster and ferris wheel get washed out. Wah. What about the wild fires of Colorado this summer? What about the tsunami in Japan, thousands of people killed. What about the Indian Ocean tsunami of Indonesia? What about the tornados across the midwest, mudslides on California coastline? Yep, too many sardines in that can in Jersey and N Y. One good thing came from it, Christie shows why he would not have been a good presidental candidate. As far as the weather, it seems like snow falls in the winter everywhere except Gobi desert, perhaps relocation program from fed would work a deal.

thanks for making such a great case for global warming which republicans deny. I'm not overly religious but I think it's telling that republicans think that it's all a natural phenomenon and God must shoulder the blame for it all. I don't think he/she intended that humans would not take care of what they were given. I remember an old bumper sticker, "Jesus is coming and boy is he pissed!"

Bring it on! Americans need a wake up call on devastation to get them ready for real devastation over the next four years!
