New York City sees no homicides for days after Superstorm Sandy

Superstorm Sandy has brought its share of calamity and devastation to New York City, since it made landfall in the Northeast on Monday evening. But there's at least one ray of light: There were no homicides over an almost five-day period.

New York Police Department Detective Cheryl Crispin confirmed that as of 5 p.m. ET Friday, there had been no homicides in New York City since a reported death at 3:40 a.m. Monday in the 62nd Precinct in Brooklyn.

That's unusual in the United States' largest city: In the week of Oct. 15 to Oct. 21 this year, for example, there were five murders, according to the NYPD CompStat Unit. That same week in 2011 saw 13 murders.

The homicide rate in New York has been declining in recent decades. In 2011, 515 deaths were classified as homicides, according to city figures.

In the Monday incident, a man who had reportedly been beaten by a group of men died at Lutheran Medical Center in New York, WNBC's Jonathan Dienst reported. Four people were arrested.

But despite the lull in homicides, Superstorm Sandy was deadly: The U.S. toll has risen to nearly 100.

Instead of killing each other, they all took up looting. Pretty sad.

Looting in NYC in the wake of the storm has been fairly rare, save for one outbreak on Coney Island. Get your facts straight.

So in that case, let's be thorough. In 1968, New York City experienced X number of REPORTED homicides, which was an X% increase from the REPORTED number a year before.

Honestly people - I've never seen so many nonsensical comments in response to an article. Maybe people are so busy surviving that they don't have time to worry about petty crap, like "you disrespected me; I'm going to bust you up"!

      3 Reasons:

1.) Mugger-Movers (also known as NYC Subways and buses ) have been out of service

2.) With all that flooding ......Hard to tell if someone drown by accident or they had help.

3.) Victims were not readily available.

Tempers could easily become shorter for a variety of reasons as people try to salvage their lives and may say and do things that they would not normally. Hope I'm wrong and people continue to try and pull together.

So my choice on who to believe is between the NYPD spokesman, who has access to the relevant data, or you and your gut, who has access to your refrigerator full of Hot Pockets somewhere in Nowheresville, Indiana, or wherever your pontificating HQ happens to be.

Guess who I'm more likely to believe?

I'm in Nowheresville, Indiana, and this story vindicates my own gut, which is that much of the sociopathy is due to people having too few real problems to deal with in this cushy modern life.

Scabby, I'm going with BS too. It's in the best interests of NYC POLITICIANS to SAY there have been no murders. They of course mean there have been no REPORTED murders, but dolts like you wouldn't get that distinction anyway.

It is usually this way whenever a disaster (natural or man-made) occurs. Even after 9/11, there were less Homicides all throughout the US for a short period - then business "back to normal" after the shock wore off.

I sure do hope homicides decrease even more - throughout the US!

Of course not... The city is in a state of lock down, similar to marshal law... Yeah, no killings, no freedom and suspension of rights... Be careful people, the media may make this sound good, don't believe it! It's conditioning for future tyranny.

Six months from now we will be reading about the murders that went unreported in the media after Sandy.

Other then that pesky little thing they MIGHT be right, but then again they are talking about REPORTED murders...think maybe the cops and other people have been a little busy elsewhere to find any? as most average run of the mill murders wont call the cops and report themselves that would be my guess

This is truly amazing. I've seen nothing but puff pieces from our regular news sources. How wonderful this storm is. Homicides are down. Children appreciate their parents more. Children are going to go outside and play because they can't use their electronics. Things are going to come back bigger and better. the federal government is operating at peak performance. You only see the truth coming from alternative media sources. The government is operating slow, people are angry and miserable. If you don't think the media is in the tank for Obama you are delusional.

Scooter. Sort of off topic, but since you bring it up, the people of Illinois are getting exactly what they want in that cesspool known as Springfield. What the voters of Illinois are pissed about is that they each didn't get their cut of the tax increase They've systematically voted for Chicago style corruption for 50+ years and are now shocked that all the money is gone!!! Imagine that? Now that I re-consider, maybe just wipe Illinois off the map with a massive earthquake and start over. Come on New Madrid!

No reported murders, as stated by a NYPD mouthpiece...those of us who live in the middle of the affected areas of Brooklyn, Queens, & Staten Island know very well that enterprising bad guys will recognize a great cover for a few of their dirty deeds, which will be automatically blamed on the storm.

If there is one thing we have learned (once again) from all of this, it is that the politicians ALL lie like a rug. They talk themselves up and crank out sound bites & photo ops, but meanwhile the vast majority of aid that is actually being DELIVERED to New Yorkers who are homeless, hungry, and cold in the wake of the storm is coming from religious congregations, ethnic societies, and other independent (privately funded) civic groups. We need more people to shut their mouths, open their hearts (and wallets), and roll up their sleeves to help our neighbors.

More fluff from this BS news agency, the black neighborhoods have violence and looting all over the place, the police are over-taxed. It's no different than Katrina, the blacks used the disaster to rob, rape, and commit crimes. It's going on in NJ and NY the news just refuses to report on it.

It's evident to me that the only black person you've ever been acquainted with has been on television, so let me offer you some assistance. I, in fact, am a young black woman, living in a black neighborhood in NYC, where we lost power for four days - it was restored just last night. I'm in my house right now and as I look out my window at the three homes across from me where three retired couples live, at the house next door to my right where a young couple and their four children live and at the home on my left on top of which a 100-year old tree came crashing down Monday night, I am happy to report that no robbing, raping, and/or any other assorted crimes are taking place.

What I HAVE seen over the past few days have been people acting with kindness, compassion and decency when for instance everyone banded together to help move a portion of a tree off a neighbor's car so she could drive to work (she's a nurse). I HAVE seen neighbors bringing each other hot coffee and chocolate and warm food and inquiring after each other's well being. And what I DO see is a quiet street, a calm neighborhood, and a community of people acting with civility and good manners, something to which you, sir, could not be attributed.
