Gunman opens fire at crowded Georgia fair; 7 wounded

Police in Savannah, Ga., were searching Sunday for a gunman who opened fire at a crowded fair, wounding seven people.

The shooting happened Saturday night at the Coastal Empire Fairgrounds  on Savannah's  suburban south side.

Savannah-Chatham metro police officers at the fair had just cleared up an apparently unrelated fight near the rides when shots were fired nearby at about 10:40 p.m., the Savannah Morning News reported

Nobody was killed but seven people were treated for gunshot wounds  at area hospitals, Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Julian Miller said Sunday.

"The place was packed," Miller said, according to the AP. "It was Saturday night at the fair, and that's a big night."

Officers worked through the night to clear the scene and to search for a gunman reported to be wearing a dark jumpsuit.

The motive for the shootings was not known. Several people were detained and questioned Saturday night, but all had been released by investigators, according to AP.

Because you're an idiot??

Perhaps enforce the laws that are already on the books? Gun control does NOTHING to stop illegal guns. It only hurts law abiding people. Do you think for one second gang bangers are going to pay attention to gun control laws?

What is YOUR proposal for stricter gun control? Spell it out. do YOU have a solution or just an objection to legal firearm ownership?

There was no legal ownership here. This was a bunch of ignorant black Americans who prove AGAIN that they cannot congregate without acting stupid.

I have worked black expo in Indianapolis every year, the ignorance of blacks during that time is amazing. Not a shocker though.

How often do you have shotting at white gatherings, not very often.

It is alomst impossible to have a large gathering of black Americans without a shooting or shots fired.

These are just facts, this is what I have witnessed time and time again.

Just for once I would like to hear a sensible discussion from both sides of the gun issue on how we can curb the senseless violence and killing while still allowing responsible gun owners to exercise their second amendment rights. Every time an event such as this occurs, somebody expresses a desire for some kind of restraint over uncontrolled weapons proliferation. Then immediately there is a barrage of invective from self-described sensible gun owners, hurling insults and calling the other side idiots and morons.

I'd like to hear a sensible suggestion from any reasonably intelligent mentally responsible gun owner on how to keep guns from falling into the hands of deranged idiots. Since the gun rights crowd believe that everyone who doesn't agree with them are idiots and fools, let's hear from them. Give the rest of us the benefit of your superior wisdom and offer some thoughtful solution to this problem of public safety.

And, don't just say, we should enforce the laws. That is obviously not working. Any laws that are enforceable and effective are immediately attacked by the NRA, as are any legislators who propose any reasonable restrictions. Let's hear it from the gun crowd. How do we keep guns out of the hands of criminal psychopaths and mentally deranged? Tell the rest of us idiots and morons, what is your solution?

That is an individual choice that everyone has to make for themselves, so if you don't have it in you tp protect you and yours what it really boils down to is only the strong survive, and that is nothing more than the harsh reality of it.

  • First, legitimate gun owners do not call those against guns idiots and morons.
  • Second, the best way to help protect yourself if you do not like guns is to report anyone that you know has mental issues, is not stable enough or is a criminal that you know has a gun.
  • Third, those with mental problems and criminals will always be able to purchase one on the black market.
  • Fourth, I go through mandatory gun classes every other year and train monthly at the gun range. You will find most legitimate gun owhers err on the side of safety and not pull a gun at just anything.

My neighbors know I carry and are happy about it. They have chosen not to carry for personal reasons or are not eligible to carry a gun. I have surveillance cameras that cover my property as well as my neighbors properties. I caught a hit and run on my cameras two nights ago. I put the hit and run accident on a disc and gave the video to my neighbor. When I know criminals are in the area, I call the police and let them know to keep an eye on them. I do not take action myself. I am a responsible citizen of the United States. All legitimate gun owners are. We do not call those that do not carry or like guns names. That is their right and privilege. It is our right and privilege to carry a weapon. I support the rights of all people that follow the law.

There is no solution to keeping guns out of the criminals hands except to report anyone that you know that is suspicious or has mental problems that owns a gun. Unfortunately, guns are like drugs and alcohol. Those that want to break the law will always find a way.

See you after the next mass shooting!

It is really pretty easy, all unregistered weapons are grandfathered. Then all private sales require an FFL transfer as business sales already do, enforce the laws of the 1968 gun act(even though some are asinine), selling a weapon without an FFL transfer would be a felony for both the selling and buying party.

Now I hear the cries: they're going to take our guns(NRA propaganda). In order to outlaw guns the second amendment would need to repealed and the only way to do that is with a constitutional amendment which would require a 2/3 majority by either both houses congress, or the states, really don't see that happening.

By the way I am pro second amendment, pro private gun ownership, pro concealed carry, and pro stand your ground laws.

Require registration of all handguns and then outlaw them and take them and make stiff penalties for having one; but leave the long guns alone for you can't win a revolution with handguns but we need AR and the like to insure freedom. Beside 90 something % of all violent crime in volving guns are comitted with handguns. This is the the compromize and the best answer to protect your right to defend yourself, home and property and the dire need to defend freedom from tyrants and criminals of which there are many today.

Back in the 50s when NY decided to make guns harder to get, the local gangs would take a piece of wood, a curtain rod, a clothes pin, nail or paper clip and a rubber band. You know what that makes? A gun. Stop thinking that you can stop people from committing crime by making inanimate objects illegal!!! We made drugs illegal, hows that working out? They made sudafed hader to get because its sometimes used to make a drug called Meth. Now there is more meth than ever before. Outlawing inanimate objects never stops the crime from taking place. Get over it. Give back the 2nd amendment rights to Americans, it will do much much more to stop crime than anything else.

I still am shocked of 9 people wounded in front of Empire state 2,5 month ago, by several police people shooting in a huge crowd like some robot without any brains!--they have to keep up the daily ration of 2,7 people shot and killed every day by USA police-- now there we need some gun control, or do like UK no guns for police---I mean they are actually safe on the streets from police killing!

You will never be able to keep firearms out of the hands of "criminal psychopaths and mentally deranged". REGARDLESS of what laws you pass, or ENFORCE, psychopaths, sociopaths and generally deranged people will always find a means to get a firearm.

All we can do is to hope to stop them before they do too much damage. As that's all we can do to stop ANY sociopath or psychotic individual from blowing up a car bomb or any other device. If they want to do the damage, they'll find a way.

Constantly. Open up a newspaper; there are constant stories of white people shooting to death their entire families (including children), pulling guns out at malls, schools, workplaces, etc. and just shooting dozens of people dead. Columbine, the Batman theater shootings, the Texas watchtower murders, the postal shootings, and on and on and on and on and on. And you know what? White or black, the killers are always male. Yet you have nothing to say about that, do you? Because it's not "politically correct" to point that out, is it??

"Gun ownership is a constitutional right"

I know many would scream at this opinion, but I honestly don't think a Constitution can stand forever, unchanged ("Amendments" cannot change a constitution, they can only amend it). And the reason I say this is because our society is very different from that one of our founding fathers. And not only because of population growth and all related problems, like the way modern people behave and think, with related levels of stress.

Gun control should be based on rejecting license to criminals so we would have the advantage of applying a stronger sentence when they're convicted. But rejecting a license to law abiding citizens wouldn't work, because in a free society like ours, the no-guns law would be about impossible to enforce. People will always get around to what they want to do unless they're subjected to a dictatorship.

My point is that making the use of something "illegal" doesn't work. We can see that fact with drugs, prostitution, "prohibition" where not only the cheap moonshine brewed on the countryside, but finer spirits made the mob strong and powerful.

        Exactly.

At one point, we had the political will to do something about a particular weapon that was causing a lot of problems: machine guns. How many murders are committed today where the weapon is a machine gun? Not very many. So, the law does work.

Today, hand guns are the problem. If we was smart, we would put hand guns in the same classification as machine guns.

Unfortunately, we ain't smart. Folks is buying hand guns like never before. Can't get enough of 'em.

It's weird. Some folks feel safer if they have a hand gun. So, not only do they get a hand gun, but they support laws that make it real easy to buy hand guns. When it's real easy to buy hand guns, it's real easy for the bad guys to get hand guns. And, an armed assailant with a hand gun has the advantage over an intended victim, even if the intended victim is armed.

There are a lot more murders in the US than there are justifiable homicides.

          #1.44 - Sun Nov 4, 2012 10:37 PM EST

Stricter gun control just keeps guns out of the hands of legitimate people that may save someone's life.

The criminal and insane people will always be able to get guns on the black market.

While someone there may have had a CCL and a weapon, it is probable they could not find a clear target and did not pull their weapon because there has to be a clear target.

Legitimate gun owners do follow the law. I am and know several legitimate gun owners.

Do not regulate the legitimate gun owners. We are protecting our families, property and neighbors.

Crowded fair and he didn't manage to kill anyone. That's a minor miracle right there.

Can't believe he got away though.

Was it a random act of attempted mass murder, or something specific with people caught in the line of fire?

Don't forget holding the gun sideways to look cool. It's really hard to hit a target aiming like that.

yes very strict gun control can work but it has to be nationwide so that you cant just go to another state and get a gun. Plus officials need to heavily enforce it rather than just takeing a lax approach like they are now. When you buy a gun you should have to register it with the police and your medical/behavioral background needs to be monitered for as long as you own a gun. If you have a habit of getting into fights with people or starting other kinds of trouble you should get your guns taken away until you can prove that you can control yourself. Gun ownership needs to be a privilage, not a right. Less guns = less murders and thats a fact

I believe the proper sentence structure would be "FEWER guns=fewer murders". Not only is your statement wrong, it was poorly structured. See you at the polls?

Vegeta ...It's obvious that you don't know the facts....In area's where there are strict gun controls laws, there are more thugs using guns to victimize the innocent....And in area's where there are looser gun control laws ...crime by thugs is down...Just the opposite of what you're saying. It should be repeated that The more gun control laws there are the more thugs have less to fear, and the innocent are the one's who suffer.

There actually is very strict gun control in most states including Texas. It is a right and a privilige to sane people with no criminal or mental problem background. I understand the fear of guns. I had to start carrying concealed when a sheriff told me to, because someone was taking pot shots at me. That person was older and a drunk who eventually had a heart attack when he found out I did carry a gun. I have carried a gun ever since. The CCL class I took made me realize just how many people legitmately carry a gun.

Now, I live my life as if everyone carries. I try to separate the good from the bad everywhere I am. I stay away from situations where there may be a danger even more now. I have learned more about peoples facial recognition and behavioral patterns. The world is changing a lot. However, I prefer to be a protector of my family, property and neighbors than a victim. Guns have became my hobby and I do collect them. I even have some black powder guns passed down thru family generations that I hope to donate to museums after I pass away.

I see legitimate owners just refusing to be victims. They carry for the protection of themselves and others that are innocents. They do not pull a gun if there is not a target that is shooting at them or others. We have enough regulation. We just need to catch the criminals and have people that know others that are insane that have guns and lock them up and take away their guns.

It is just up to you. Be free and protected or be a victim someday. It might be your neighbor may save your life if you do not like guns. I do not fault people that do not like guns. I do not fault legitimate people that do like or carry guns.

Confiscating the guns would only get the legal ones and would open up a whole new vertical market for the drug cartels. Instead of bringing in drugs by the ton, they could bring in drugs and guns by the ton.

Exactly, they tried it with alcohol, failed miserably and they repealed it. Then they tried it with drugs and again it has failed miserably, but they refuse to repeal it with the drugs because the leeches figured out how much larger they could expand the government with it in place and at the same time create millions of unionized gov jobs. Anytime the gov attempts to abolish anything all it does is create a whole new arm for the underworld.

NO, then sit down & stop trying to punish me for what a criminal does.

How does registering the serial number of a firearm prevent crime? Plus how does it solve the crime?

It doesn't prevent crime, but if buying a used gun, it shows when you took possession, and if the gun was used in or linked to a crime prior to you taking possession, you are safe. If the number wasn't registered when you took possession you are on the hook. If you are the original purchaser, it is registered in your name. If you sell it without a transfer and the person you sell it to uses it in a crime, or sells it to someone who uses it in a crime and it is recovered, guess who's door the authorities will be knocking on and interrogating, and you can bet your a$$ that even with an alibi you will be a suspect of at least conspiracy. If it is stolen and you report it you are in the clear from what it may be used for.

BS, all they would need to do is to go down on the nearest street corner. If guns were outlawed the black market would be so overrun with them, they'd probably be cheaper from a street dealer than they are now. Then the criminals would really have a field day.

                              Gun control.

I don't think gun control is necessarily the answer.

The problem isn't that people are going out and buying guns and murdering people with them.

The problem is that people have weird urges to murder crowds of strangers in the first place. People who get it into their heads that mass murder is what they want to do today aren't going to be discouraged by it being difficult to find weapons (or bomb materials, or poison, or whatever). If that's really their goal, they're going to find a way to do it. They're crazy, not (necessarily) stupid.

This is true anywhere. If somebody is nuts enough to want to go on a killing spree, they're going to do it. No level of social control will prevent them from doing it.

The real question is that, if we accept the premise that society does not have the capability to prevent mass murder, why do some countries have less of it (per capita)?

Why is it that in America we have a certain (very small) subset of people who believe that, when all else fails, they should resort to death and violence to solve problems and express their frustrations and anger? Why do people across the world not do this? What is it that we are doing differently that encourages this mindset?

There are countries with even less strict gun control laws than America that don't have this problem. It's not about the guns, it's about the way we think, the way we approach problems, the way we try to solve them, our mindset.

Is it our culture? Our education? Our history? Our personality? I don't know. And all this debate on "gun control laws" is, I think, distracting us from finding the actual problem.

It's our elected officials, law makers, judicial system, and penal systems fault, but mainly the law makers. They spare the rod and spoil the child so to speak. If the penalties were severe enough the largest majority of that crap would stop. If you or anyone else knew that you would never get a speeding ticket would you ever obey the speed limit laws? Highly unlikely. Violent criminals knows that at the very worst they stand a chance to get executed in 20-30 yrs, and that's only if they are in one of the few states that still have capital punishment. A free roof over their heads, 3 squares a day with medical and dental is more of an incentive than a deterrent.

Countries with executions don't necessarily have a lower violent crime rate either. Like gun control, it doesn't actually solve the problem.

It's all well and good to solve the problem of "we caught a killer, what should we do with him?"

But that's not the problem I think we should be trying to solve. people are getting killed. Good people who've never done anything wrong. Executing the criminal is kind of like shutting the barn door after the horse gets out. I want a solution that keeps the people alive in the first place.

We can look around at other nations. Some have stricter gun control, and some have looser gun control. We can conclude that gun control and violent crime rates aren't necessarily correlated. We can look at executions, and come to the same conclusion. A legal system that favors executions doesn't necessarily have lower violent crime rates either.

If the solution isn't gun control, and if it isn't harsher sentencing, then what is it?

                                #18.2 - Sun Nov 4, 2012 3:30 PM EST

I don't believe there really is a sure fire solution per se, afterall, man has been murdering each other since the begining of time. We can't stop them from murdering the first time around, but we damn sure can prevent it from happening again. If anyone is found to be guilty of murder by solid evidence I think they need to be taken out once and for ever. No if's and's or buts about it. I think that is the absolute best we can do on the matter.

the fairgrounds are actually in the west savannah ghetto...not a good area as the article makes it sound. 1030 on a saturday night was most likely all blacks still at the fair. White people know better than be out around town past dark. Somebody didnt like the way a group was looking at him so he pops off a couple of rounds. Thats how it works in this city.

A guy in a dark jumpsuit and they can't seem to get him yet? It had to be that Eddie Murphy. I bet he started wearing that outfit from his Raw days again; he breaks it out on the weekends, ya know. Now if the shooter wore a white jumpsuit, it would be a possible Elvis sighting. "Elvis has left the fairgrounds." Guns don't kill people; @ssholes do. Take away guns and they'll use pipe bombs or beat you to death with a garden rake. You can't stop a crazy.

Ah, what a lovely combination: low IQ, poor education, firearms, mental illness and/or alcohol. (You mix and match the previously mentioned to fit any given scenario in any one of the "gunman opens fire" headlines.

Yes, but that would be too sensible AND the cheapest way out if it were done right like it should be. No sense in being too rational about it though.

I can only hope UAW shop steward that you, your family and people like you will be the first taken and imprisoned if our guns are taken away. The 2nd ammendment insures the freedom that PROTECTS us from the possibility of a dictatorship as well as the criminal element. So when your home is being broken into or your being thrown into an internment camp i can only hope that you and others that think like you will reflect on your stupidity.

Outlaw guns, they'll use bows and arrows. Outlaw bows and arrows, they'll use spears. Outlaw spears, they'll use knives. Outlaw knives, they'll use rocks and sticks. Outlaw rocks and sticks, they'll use fists and feet. Yeah, guns make it easier, but that's all. Does anybody really, seriously think that outlawing guns will take them out of the hands of sociopaths and criminals and or the sociopaths and criminals pretending to be our various governments?

In Somalia 250,000 were killed using knives and machettes in 8 years. If the people were armed they could have fought back against the lawless government.

I am female though I may be labeled a redneck and I have never had a penis. I have had a gun pointed at me and shot near me. I have no desire to be a victim. The local sheriff at the time had me start carrying a concealed gun for my self protection. The guy that shot at me was a drunk. He came up to me one day and patted me on the shoulder wanting to be friends. He felt the shoulder holster I had on and had a heart attack. He no longer bothered me and I was free to lead a normal life.

After taking CCL classes, I realized just how many people carry a weapon. I now treat everyone with the same respect I want regardless of color, race, religion, gender, etc. I know the criminals will always have guns. I protect my family, property and neighbors. They know I carry. I also have a surveillance system which caught a hit and run at my neighbors house 2 days ago. I heard the crash at 1:26am and went outside after getting dressed and called the police. I saw the driver back up and drive off. I copied the video off the surveillance dvr and put it on a disk for my neighbor. I did not go to confront the person because I figured they were drunk, high and probably armed.

I am pro self protection. I do not count on being saved if someone breaks onto my property or in my house. I will protect my neighbors as well. Some do not have a gun due to their beliefs or possible prior problems of arrest. They are glad to have me as a neighbor. I open carry when I am on my property.

The choice is being a victim or protecting yourself, family, property and neighbors.
