Nor'easter may bring 50 mph winds, rain to Sandy-hit areas

TODAY's Al Roker takes a look at a slow-moving storm set to hit the Northeast this week, bringing coastal wind gusts up to 55 mph, 2-4 inches of rain and dumping heavy snow in the mountains.

Updated at 6:26 p.m. ET: NEW YORK -- A week after Superstorm Sandy ravaged the New Jersey and New York coast lines, another challenge loomed Monday for the region: a slow-moving nor’easter, capable of delivering punishing amounts of wind, rain and snow.

"Though this storm will not have near the magnitude of the impact Sandy had, the combination of rain, wind and snow will add insult to injury for the recovery process along the East Coast," The Weather Channel’s Chris Dolce reported.

Starting in Florida Tuesday morning, the storm will move up the East Coast and into the Carolinas late in the day, TODAY Show Chief Meteorologist Al Roker said. By Wednesday morning, the storm will move into New Jersey with strong onshore wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour and waves measuring 10 to 20 feet high. The storm could bring 2 to 4 inches of rainfall in the area as it makes its way into New England Thursday.

Full coverage of Sandy's aftermath

“Normally we wouldn’t worry about it, but this is a potentially dangerous storm only because when we’re talking about tides of 4 to 5 feet when you have almost no beaches and no dunes, that could be big problems all along the areas already affected by Sandy, and it may bring some more power lines down,” Roker said.

Behind the rain will be more cold air, Roker said, which means there is the potential for heavy amounts of snow in the White and Green Mountains in New England all the way back down to areas in West Virginia.

Residents of Rockaway, N.Y., stay warm by a fire during near-freezing temperatures on Sunday.

While more than a million people remained without power Monday, life was expected to return slowly to normal for many in the region ahead of the nor’easter. Still, a shortage of gas and overwhelmed transit systems remain problems.

The good news in New York City was that, unlike last week, service on key subway lines connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn under the East River was restored Monday, but sizeable legs of the region's public transportation network were still hobbled by storm. People stood for an hour or more on train platforms or street corners in New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut waiting for trains and buses, only to find many of them already too crowded to board, Reuters reported.

Service on many rail and bus lines was reduced and the subway was running at about 80 percent of its normal service.

The commute from New Jersey was particularly trying.

As a Northeast Corridor Line train on the NJ Transit network pulled into Newark, passengers wondered aloud how the hundreds of passengers who crowded the platform would squeeze into the already-packed train.

A conductor banged on the window, signaling passengers to squeeze together more than they already were. "Move in! It's gonna be a tight fit," another conductor yelled. Still, there was no room for about half of the passengers in Newark.

"I'm taking Amtrak back this afternoon, so I don't have to deal with this," said Gabrielle Nader, a 27-year-old human resources professional who boarded in Trenton. "It's worse than a subway."

Nader, from northeast Philadelphia, said she had already made Amtrak reservations through Wednesday.

Want to help the recovery? Here's how

Problems getting fuel
Sandy — which killed more than 100 people in 10 states, caused massive power outages and left tens of thousands in need of emergency housing —disrupted supply to many gas stations, leading New Jersey to enforce odd-even rationing for motorists.

Local residents salvage food from bags thrown out of a flooded store on Coney Island on Sunday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie tried to reassure people that refineries and pipelines were back online and gas was being delivered. "We do not have a fuel shortage," he said at a news conference on Sunday.

Fuel shortage expected to last for days, Cuomo says

There was no rationing in New York City, where the search for gas became a maddening scavenger hunt over the weekend.

Manhattan doorman Iver Sanchez, who lives in Queens, waited at an Upper West Side gas station for three hours and still had a long line of cars ahead of him.

"If I don't get gas today, I won't be able to get any for the rest of the week," he said.

In the Bronx, a Citgo station had received gas early Saturday evening, but within seven hours had run through a supply which usually lasts two to three days, said gas attendant Nagi Singh.

"A lot of people were angry with me," he said.

Cops: 2 arrested over alleged gas hoarding

New York City has spent $85.4 million so far on emergency contracts in response to Sandy, city Comptroller John Liu said on Monday.  The repair of damaged beaches, from Manhattan to Coney Island and the Rockaways, was the single highest item, totaling nearly $30.4 million so far.

"Together, we have made a lot of progress, but we know the road ahead will be long and recovery will take time," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said during a visit to New York on Monday.

In New Jersey, Monday promised to begin the return to some everyday activities. About half the school districts reported they will reopen and New Jersey Transit said it would have more train and bus service restored in time for the workweek. Philadelphia's transit authority loaned 31 buses that New Jersey Transit planned to use to support shuttle service for commuters traveling to New York City.

Superstorm Sandy made landfall Monday evening on a destructive and deadly path across the Northeast.

The challenges were more severe for tens of thousands of people unable to return to their homes and many more than that living without power or heat. Some 1.35 million homes and businesses remained in the dark on Monday due to damages from the storm, down by about 500,000 from Sunday, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability said.

Bloomberg said Sunday that 30,000 to 40,000 people in New York City were in need of shelter, including 20,000 in public housing. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has already dispensed close to $200 million in emergency housing assistance.

Temperatures will remain chilly in the days ahead, according to The Weather Channel. Highs in the 40s or low 50s will be commonplace through Wednesday. Some interior and New England locations may not get out of the 30s, it said.

Concerns are also growing that voters displaced by Sandy will not get to polling stations on Election Day on Tuesday. Scores of voting centers were rendered useless by the record surge of seawater in New York and New Jersey.

New Jersey has said it will allow people displaced by the storm to vote by email.  In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order allowing displaced voters to cast ballots by affidavit at any polling site they can reach Tuesday. Both states are normally easy wins for the Democrats.

In Highlands, a blue collar fishing town, 1,200 homes were flooded, including the mayor's. The federal government has pledged to pay for housing in the region. Meanwhile in New York, transit returns on line. NBC's Michelle Franzen reports.

NBC News staff, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

>>>BRIDGE>>>Future You & Us<<<

America must put some muscle on, so that we may overcome the obstructions, that have prevented our bridge crossing, to the future.

Hurricane Sandy showed us, that renewed legislation, with the goal of a bridge fuel, would help the middle-class, and our nation's GDP.

Natural-gas legislation, minus the Keystone XL pipeline addendum, would be a unifying first step.

The storm revealed that we don't have a gasoline shortage, and that the nation's lack of new refining capacity, can not be solved by Keystone XL.

Building new infrastructure, like the natural-gas bridge fuel to the future, could incorporate emergency power generation, and make home fueling a viable consumer option. Let's get started!

DOMESTIC NATURAL-GAS USA

Getting the election out of the way is the first step toward resolving the issue. For many investors, backing Obama or Romney matters less than knowing which direction the country will take.

It's kind of insulting to say others besides NY aren't getting help. My Jersey friend got power back yesterday, after crews got them up and running - working their tails off to help customers in the whole area. Crews are there from all over the country trying to help. Is a huge, densely populated area still struggling? Of course! But don't act like they are getting no help, sheesh.

And Barry the pathological liar does? LMFAO. Barry has not resume, not skills, and no sense. He is an elitist of the worst order. He is beholden to someone else for everything he claims to be starting with his white grandmother and all the white radical liberal professors who pushed him along. He is a demonstration of the worst results of affirmative action. Ever hear of the "Peter Principle"....you work you way up to your level of incompetence. Well Barry never his his earlier because he never did anything, never worked. How many people do you think he ever managed in a business environment? Now he is surrounded by syncophants and actually believes what he hears about himself...that he is a genius. Well lets see his IQ test results...his college grades or SOMETHING that will prove the notion wrong that he got to where he is simply on the basis of his coffee tan skin color. Whites see him as a non threatening blackman, and he panders to that, all the while spewing lies and working to fullfill his own agenda which is not about race, but economic: to break the US's economic pre-emenence in the world. Which you have nots will have a lot less, when he is done.

Shouldn't you be upset at the administration that was in the WH at the time Katrina struck? Why are you trying to tie the response time of Katrina to this administration?

Also, Gov. Christie has a completely different outlook on the response you seem to think NJ isn't getting.

All the states got immediate assistance. Just because everything wasn't fixed overnight to appease your irrational thought process, in no way means other states are being ignored. NYC has the biggest transit system in the world. Of course it will garner more attention.

It's too late now to throw out blind political hate. The election is tomorrow.

Well lets see his IQ test results...his college grades or SOMETHING that will prove the notion wrong that he got to where he is simply on the basis of his coffee tan skin color.

Way to drag race into it yet again. Do tell though. Who was the last President that had to endure this racial crap? You think He graduated from Harvard just because of his skin color?

You can deny it all you want, but your racism is showing. Guess a black man can't graduate from Harvard because he is intelligent in your opinion, right?

Well, old guy-2484691, your article would scare the ignorant and that goes without saying. However, anyone who isn't an idiot about Mitt Romney knows the following:
    A) He was a co-founder, meaning he was not the only big hat in charge

    B) He left Bain in 2002, 7 years before the auto bailout, the supposed "murder" of that guy's wife, and Chrysler as you are hung up on that.

What those two points mean is that you're trying hard to pin something on someone who wasn't even there. That's called a "frame up" and is considered slander against an innocent person. It is also called "barking up the wrong tree". The reason he hasn't filed his tax returns is because he's been a governor for the last 8 years. His tax returns are a matter of public record because he has been a public servant since leaving Bain. You people are so hung up on wanting to know about his tax history, but aside from receiving what royalties and investment returns he gains from the stock market, Romney's income is from holding office.

That's the problem with you libtards. You don't do your own homework. You just repeat after your pundits because vitriol is all you know and understand, and when you're corrected you simply just troll the guy with the facts doing everything you can to turn the tables to make it seem like he/she is the one that ignores facts and logic. You know who else does that? Spoiled teenagers and adolescents in sandboxes who don't know right from wrong and are overconfident because their parents never discipline them or correct them. It doesn't make them right, it just makes them a pain in the ass because they refuse to listen to people who know what they're talking about.

Feel free to go on a copycat rant against me now. I'm sure you'll be just like all the cookie cutter conformist Democrats that troll these forums looking for conflict to give meaning to their empty lives.

I don't know about you, but I know a liar when I hear one. I know when a forked tongue lashes out with two tails flipping about in all directions. Romney is no poker player. His deceit and manipulation combined with a lack of moral character should scare anyone who has any good common decency. He talks religion, but he doesn't practice what he preaches.

Thanks for giving some credit to the very hard working linemen trying to put the lines back up under very hard conditions. People don't realize how difficult it is. Standing on a pole with the aid of spikes, or in a bucket, it is hard work. Electric companies have sent people and equipment from across the country to help. I worked many years for a California electric company, my husband worked 35 years for same company, and in the field with the same lineman/splicers, we can attest to this not being an easy job. The best thing people can do when they see the truck coming to get their power back on is say thank you, rather than what took you so long.

The fact still remains that they were there to help in a devastated area and paper work held them up so long that others filled those spots. So, they were turned down in that respect.

Hank...Superstorm? LMFAO....it wasn't even a category 1 Hurricane. The truth is the lamebrain government dependent slobs in NYC did nothing to prepare. It was like hitting an anthill with a hose. I have friends and relatives in NY. and DC area. The difference I see is this: Conservatives had generators, water, propane fuel to cook with, filled their cars and food laid up because the knew the power would go out. The Libertards sat on their thumbs and did nothing and now they wait in line for fuel, don't have containers to put it in if they find it, have no food, no water and no way to stay warm. Its f'ing November! Don't they know where they live.

        Mudrake:

I am not sure if there is a clear breakdown between conservatives and liberals and their preparation efforts, :) but I agree with what you are saying. We are in Virginia, and we prepared for the storm. We filled up our cars with gas, filled our generator and spare gas cans with gas, made sure our propane tank was full for cooking outside, and had charcoal as a back up. We bought food and water, which we are now donating since we don't need it. We had substantial wind effects, and downed trees. We lost power, and we did not get the worst of the storm compared to what so many of these people are experiencing, but their lack of preparation has just baffled me. And to hear them griping by Day 2 that the power wasn't back on was laughable to me. We lived in Houston when Hurricane Ike hit, and we were without power for TWO WEEKS. And the media gave our plight very little coverage because Ike had the misfortune to hit the same weekend the banking industry collapsed. But we took care of ourselves in a civil manner, shared food, generators, whatever was needed. Our mayor ran FEMA out of town because they were so inept and we were all doing a better job of helping each other on the local level. The only assistance I wish we had seen was the Tide Truck that supposedly shows up so that you can do laundry. We would have welcomed that. :)

Waiting for someone else to come rescue you when you didn't do your part to prepare is ridiculous.

Yeah, mudrake, it was a little less than a cat. 1 storm. However, your kind keeps forgetting that there were still winds clocked at 90 mph in NYC. Also, there was the addition of high tide and a full moon when the storm hit. Both of those do affect the surge that comes. People were ordered to evacute from the shores of New Jersey and low laying areas of NYC. By the way, without electricity for the gas pumps to run, even your conservatives ran out of fuel for their generators. The Northeast does not usually get storms such as this. That is why areas in the South are supposedly prepared. They get hurricanes all the time, so people with a little money can buy generators. Of course, with someone like you, it will fall on deaf ears. You already made up your mind about us. It doesn't matter that many people from this area took time off from work to help with the cleanup from Katrina and other major storms. Maybe we shouldn't send help to you the next time.

New Gwaker, don't forget that the pubs said they would block every bill that came in front of them when Obama took office.

Mercury? Do you live in the Northeast? I do, and we DO get storms like Sandy, generally every other year or so. It varies. Sometimes it's rain, sometimes it's snow, but they always come.

Most New Englanders are ready for storms like this. Like many I know I keep a Ready STORM SHELF, that has candles, and canned foods, evaporated milk, water and other supplies ready for the long haul.

Also many, especially those with wells, have generators to keep their water running as well as their electricity.

While mid coastal states don't get these storms as often, when they do occur you need to listen to the officials who give information and warnings.

For those who didn't evacuate when told to, I say, TOO BAD. You're on you're own then. If you live in low lying coastal areas, and there's a potential flood coming, common sense would say LEAVE. If you don't, we're not coming back for you.

Meanwhile, in Texas and Louisana, we survived two Category 4 hurricanes that devastated our area and still didn't have dumpster divers and beggers on TV 3 weeks later when the power was finally restored the majority of our area.

It's hard to have pity for people who got wiped out by a tropical storm after having being blitzed by major hurricanes one after the other down here. Especially when those people laughed at our hardship and spent so much time blaming Bush and calling him a racist when the governor of Louisiana explicitly denied all offers of aid and preparation before the storm. I didn't much care for all the insults and jeers about stupid Texans and Cajuns and I consider this to be poetic justice. Now they have a clue on what it was like for us; I can't imagine how much worse it would have been had they had an Ike or Katrina, but they should thank their lucky stars and rebuild instead of hounding for publicity.

I'm not completely bitter and heartless though; I do feel bad for the good people that got hurt by this, especially for the children, particuarly the ones who lost their parents, their homes, and/or relatives. No matter what adults do, the suffering of children is never okay in my book. Hopefully soon I can donate some cash to helping them have a better life after this tragedy they have had to suffer through. With any luck, maybe some of the bad/selfish folks will also have turned over a new leaf and will pull together with their community for a better tomorrow. That would be pretty awesome.

Mercury? Do you live in the Northeast? I do, and we DO get storms like Sandy, generally every other year or so. It varies. Sometimes it's rain, sometimes it's snow, but they always come.

No we don't! Irene last year was touted as the biggest in years and years, and that wasn't as bad as Sandy. There are Nor' Easters, typically in winter when a lot of snow is dumped in the area, but nothing as powerful and devastating as Sandy. They don't typically come inland either. Everyone who knew anything said Sandy was a once in a lifetime storm.

And, yes, I live in the northeast.

I'm in one of the hardest hit areas and we all know things don't happen overnight.

        Get over yourself.

If you are in fact "in one of the hardest hit areas", then how are you using your computer? After all, "the hardest hit areas" still don't have electricity even today.

And they are not complaining. Total destruction recovery takes time. I have contributed money to the cause - have you?

The people initially affected by Sandy will now need to be concerned with this new POSSIBLE storm. Granted, it is not as large, but it will make life a little more miserable for those people. It's not just the cold rain, but it is projected that there will be winds in the area of 45mph. While that speed is normally not bad, in the condition some of these houses are in, and with the debris Sandy left in her wake, they can be deadly if more houses collapse or if debris is thrown around. Of course the other issue, and again it is not projected to be as bad, is the storm surge. Those homes in areas where the shore line has been washed away will once again be flooded as will roads and businesses.

Good luck folks. You'll be needing all you can get.

Just like storms that generally follow gulf coast hurricanes, what survived the first round doesn't always stand up to the final blow. Well said.

Actually President Obama has done for the storm affected area what he has done for the country for the past 4 years, talked about what he would do for them and the end result was nothing. We are not a 3rd world country and not Port of Prince Haiti, more effort by the White House was seen on TV, e.g personal ads by the First Lady for donations, then for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Facts penetrate the bubble? When the person attempting to give the facts, as you call them, is a known liar and hypocrite, people are going to be dismissive and, at best, skeptical. Having a negative reputation is bad for credibility.

So Bill Maher, being one of those people as he is, is a bad choice for representing your opinions. His "facts" will never penetrate the bubble because, as a comedian, he is not taken seriously in the first place. Secondly, given his decisions to denigrate people for the cheap thrill of applause, his credibility went down the toilet from lack of consistency. George Carlin, another comedian, was consistent and therefore had credibility. Yes, he denigrated people, but he did so in a way that did not swing with the tide nor did he donate millions of dollars to a presidential campaign while saying rich people are greedy, selfish, and need to pay more taxes.

Hypocrisy destroys the ability to relate facts to people. It isn't ignorance on the Republican side, it's experience and intolerance of fairweather friendship. Maher would switch sides in a heartbeat if the money and fame shifted to the Right. So would most of Hollywood and the major network stations. CNN has done this, as has Fox and NBC. I know it's MSNBC now, but it didn't used to be, and it also didn't used to be so Left-biased. Money and fame are the two biggest vices in the world and there's a lot of people who will do anything they're told if it means they can be rich and popular. Even lie and say things like Republicans don't care about facts despite no facts having been put on the table to begin with.

I must say I did find it odd that after the storm everyone try to get back to work the very next day? Waste gas and time running around amok. Instead people should have remained where they are or seek shelter with neighbors or hotels or shelters. Let the Doctors, nurses, road , train , electrical crews do their job first. Make sure roadways are safe and trees are safe before more people get killed. Get generators to gas stations and food stores on the 3rd day. Kids going to school can wait a week or so. Macy's being open, are you kidding me? Give time to the people who need to clean out basements and clear the area from limbs and such.

This was not a very good plan at all to let people just run about, not safe. Now you got idiots in Escaldes and Suburbans running around to Macy's instead. Road crews need time to repair and check for damage to bridges and tunnels and such. As for Gov Doomberg he really did show what an idiot he is by putting more time and effort in a marathon instead of taking care of the people who voted him in.

I myself took one week off to try to get myself and my family back into a somewhat normal environment. Give time to the men and women to get the electric back on and make sure the roadways are safe. No traffic lights = accidents. Long gas lines and fallen trees all about.

I see this was not taken in caution at all. Very disappointed in the money hungry government and big business we have here on the East coast. After all it's all about that mighty taxed dollar.

xsvenom, I agree with Cat MO, a voice of reason. On the other hand what do you expect from anthills like the New York City metro area which is economically dependent upon a 24/7 business machine, where any interruption is viewed (quite rightly) as a disaster. New York City itself is dependent upon millions of people commuting from outside the city to keep it running. It is also totally dependent upon its road system for food and fuel. All this is a really good reason to live somewhere else.

Xsvenom, some employers demanded that their employees come in. My spouse had to call in sick for 2 days because of the storm. The bridges into NYC were closed, many roads in the area were (and still are) closed, and there were no buses or trains running, so there was no way to get in. Some employers don't care about anything but the bottom line.

People who have jobs know how lucky we are to have them. I shipped my kids out of our cold, dark house to stay with their grandparents so I could be at work while the schools and childcare were closed. Out of sight means out of mind and then--out of work.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for daring to say it, but the workforce in the New York metro area makes at least some part of YOUR world go round, though you may not realize it or want to believe it. The banking and financial system, the mainstream media, the publishing industry--yes we the "ants" in the suburbs of New York City actually move the engines of money, news and information you depend on every day. If New York ever slacked off you would feel the effects, I don't care where you live.

This is why we need to be focusing our attention and money back on our own country. We have our own homeless, starving, and needy and yet we focus everywhere else first. I am not against helping anyone, but if we cannot take care of our own then we do not belong helping others until our own have been taken care of.

This is not about President Obama or Mr. Romney...this is about what we have allowed to happen in our own country and we keep electing people who have zero experience and expecting them to create miracles. We need to elect people who can actually do the job and then maybe we will be in a better place to help our own people when we get hit within. I saw people eating out of the trash can...that should not be happening here. What can President Obama do about it? Basically nothing. Nice man, but has less experience than most people I know. Isn't it about time that we demand better representation from both sides and make them work for us instead of fighting one another?

Let's see, Obama claimed that Katrina was mishandled on purpose by Bush because Bush hated blacks. So I suppose Obama is mishandling Sandy on purpose because he hates white? I don't think either is true. I think this nation (or any other nation) cannot fix things as quickly as their constituents demand and expect. Both New Orleans and the New York City metro area have the same problem. Both are completely dependent upon outside resources for food, water, fuel and power. It would be prudent for people living in such areas to have reserves of food, potable water and possibly gasoline. It would definitely be prudent to have a stockpile of vacation hours so if, for instance, you depend upon a rail system that is broken you can call in, take vacation (yes, I know that some companies demand you plan in advance). Bottom line, total dependence upon government maintained systems is foolish in the extreme. Personal responsibility is the safer way to go.

              probably not smellnick...

but those of us with brains PREPARE for emergencies, especially when told to DAYS in advance !!

i live in houston now and have for 30 years, before that i was in farm country in northern illinois. and we ALWAYS had supplies on hand in case of weather emergency,

an example, god foregive her, but the lady who lost her sons to the storm surge, if she and hubby had moved to higher ground a day before ... well you see my point.

and then because some other person supposedly turned them away , well i cannot judge that, that person will have to live with what they did or did not do.

ultimately SHE is the reason her boys died!!!

if she had moved a day earlier this tragedy would not have happened.

              personal responsibility ....

It took Ann Curry to tell us about Staten Island and she was outstanding and compassionate and she touched people even though her microphone was in her way. A walk about by Chris Christie and President Obama to show us a beat up boardwalk w/ a ferris wheel in the ocean was good for their political purposes and they looked good on T.V. and Biden looked good on Letterman and Mrs.'s Biden & Obama were not seen anywhere nor did they release a sympathy statement. Could 1 of them have found time to hold the Mother whose children were ripped from her arms and drowned? or the lady who paid off a 30 yr. mortgage & wanted to go home but her home was gone? Romney/Ryan for this voter.

Dot--and your POINT? Did you not notice that the people who got electricity back first (WITH a DEM Gov. A DEM President, a DEM (if you can call him affiliated to either party) MAYOR, A DEM FEMA director, etc, was the RICH people?

Romney's point was perfectly valid--the DEMS have given the '47%-ers' just enough 'hand outs' for decades, GENERATIONS even, to guarantee that they will vote DEM no matter what. Do YOU approve of a 25 year old living on Welfare and cranking out a new baby every year or so? Do YOU approve of generational Welfare?

I'll give you a MINOR solution to a chunk of what's happening in NYC--20,000 people who are 'displaced' were living in PUBLIC housing.

That means they probably don't have a 'career', many don't even have JOBS. So do what happened after KATRINA--move them SOMEWHERE that has a CHEAPER cost of living than NYC and the immediate environs. Plunk them down in some small town in up state NY or out state NJ, and at LEAST the taxpayer's cost of housing them will go down. And HEY--banks have got all these foreclosed homes--buy them up at pennies on the dollar, and turn them into 'boarding houses' and let the family that lives in the MASTER bedroom be the landlord, who is responsible for maintenance.

Give the other tenants 'discounts' if they do things like mow the lawn, or help clean the 'general' areas of the house. Or baby sit kids so that a parent can get outside work.

See--teach these folks that when they are GIVEN something, they should be grateful enough to at least maintain the place.

(PS--many of the Katrina refugees were sent to TX, AK, MO, KY, etc. Most have fit in pretty well. The WORST place to be poor is in a big city.)

The drivel you anti Obama folks are spewing just proves that you DON'T read the news - you read the far right blogs "that must be right because they're on the internet". You flaunt your ignorance and that's just what the far right (read "current Republican party") wants. The lies, voter suppression, misinformation and attacks on women's rights that the Republican machine has been spewing just doesn't bother you, does it. Romney hasn't answered any questions that will reveal his intentions. Only vague "we'll save America" and we'll bring needed change to America". That's about as deep as it gets. You also choose to ignore the drop in unemployment, the rise in consumer confidence and spending, the revitalization of the auto industry, the Republican BLATANT lies about Jeep moving to China (where Romney has significant monies invested), his fake relief effort in Ohio - supposedly collected canned goods for the victims of "Sandy" which turned out to be pure fiction - a manufactured photo op where supporters were given Walmart purchased goods to hand to Romney while he smiled vacantly at these generous donors. Yet, he refused to answer questions levied at him by journalists on the scene. The whole Republican campaign has been rife with lies and incredible gaffs and scurrilous accusations made by the likes of the completely insane Glen Beck and the Nazi gas bag Rush Limbaugh. Keep turning away from the reasonable media and stay in bed with these self indulgent hate mongers and maybe you'll get what you deserve. And being the lemmings and racists that you are, you won't know what hit you when these fake Christians have their way. And don't forget this salient fact - you rave against big government until something like "Sandy" comes along and you then NEED big government.

It is amazing how IL informed many of you are about the Candidates and their agendas. Has ANYONE WONDERED WHY ROMNEY does not SAY ONE WORD ABOUT THE NEAR DEPRESSION that was so close to becoming a reality JUST 4 years ago and would have if a REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT were in OFFICE?

They are the CAUSE of the MELTDOWN and they WILL NEVER ADMIT to ALL their wrongdoing. These guys have everyone believing that OBAMA was the CAUSE when it is FAR FROM THE TRUTH. We the AMERICAN WORKERS got ROBBED by the ones who SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE CAUSE of near DEPRESSION.

I for one WILL NEVER FORGET THAT and HOLD all these REPUBLICANS AND TEA SHYSTERS RESPONSIBLE and should be THROWN OUT OF GOVERNMENT for LIFE.

I would rather see OCCUPY WALL STREET as the REPLACEMENT PARTY. Than the THIEVES and DISHONESTY of GOP/TEA.

Alain--Funny how you accuse OTHERS of being IL(sic) informed, and then spout a bunch of DEM talking points. NO Repub has ever denied that when Obama took over, we were already in the tank--the difference is, the DEMS won't ever admit that that was ALSO not all Bush's fault. HE is not the one that loosened the regs on the bankers. He was not the one (nor his party) that for 4 decades had been pressuring banks into making loans to people who did NOT qualify for them. BOTH parties were responsible, as were a WHOLE Bunch of greedy Americans who thought it was GREAT to 'get rich quick' by buying homes, slapping a quick reno on them, (cosmetic only, lets not fix the SYSTEMS) and resell 3 months later at a huge profit.

The problems were BI-partisan. Obama's solutions were NOT. I VOTED for the man, and for Kerry, Gore, and Clinton both times. And having grown up the child of parents who both grew up in the height of the GREAT depression, I KNEW that spending is NOT the way to get out of debt. I also knew WAY before SHRUB took office (and I HATED All 8 years of Bush) that we were 'cruising for a bruising' on both housing AND on automobiles.

So while I DO NOT blame Obama for the CRASH, I DO blame him for what he has presided over during HIS first term. BUSH was NOT a business man (or at least NOT a successful one!) Neither is Obama.

What we NEED is someone who understands that you cannot continue to increase spending and never cut ANYTHING. Like Romney, I like Big Bird--but see, PBS was initially started/funded to enable good programming to be available to those who did not live in 'target rich environments' like the big cities. Its intent was excellent, but with the coming of Cable TV, that need is no longer there for TAXPAYERS to fund it. Corporations will sponsor the popular programs, and much of the CHILDREN's programming could be paid for with PROFITS from 'product placement'. So guess what? Taxpayers should NOT be funding NPR any more. We don't have the money. We're broke. Bankrupt. Kaput.

SAME goes for Planned Parenthood. When Susan G. Komen cut their support for PP, WHAT HAPPENED? PP's donations ZOOMED, and MORE than made up for the loss. (and as a long time supporter of PP, I know I switched all MY donations to PP from SGK.) I'm pro choice, have been for over 40 years. But I respect those who are NOT, and I totally get that they should not have their taxpayer money spent to support a group that DOES. So line up all those big donors, DEMS--the Clooney's, the Gates's, the Buffets, on down, and have them SPEND their money to support a cause they believe in. Because when you come right down to it, we (the US) don't have the money. We're broke, Kaput, bankrupt.

See, that is the problem with the government being involved in so many things that in the past would have been handled by charities. We can't AFFORD that. I'm SURE there are some Pub supported groups out there that are funded by taxpayer money that could ALSO be cut. AMEN.

But yet we can afford to up funding for the military that says they don't even need it???? We have a larger military then the next 14 countries combined. But i guess Romney's friends benefit from that unlike the little bit we spend on pbs.

Prayers go out to the people of New York and other affected areas from the recent storm.

Prayers also go out to those posting very idiotic and insensitive statements about this article, how the people and leadership are trying to cope. You should be ashamed but I suspect most of you aren't. What happened to these people could also happen to any of us. Let's try to show some respect and compassion.

It is so sad to read the negative political comments, but in reality, these are paid bloggers. When you look at the help and donations to New York and New Jersey, you see that mankind is more generous and kind than we give them credit for.

My prayers go out to the people of this disaster, and for those who are helping in the clean up efforts, and getting much needed supplies to the desperate.

I am so saddened by all of the natural disasters this country has seen in the last decade. I pray that all communities that have expeirenced these disasters will receive His mercy and strength to get back up and find hope.

Mr. ClaytonCo.GA--see, I live in MO. We routinely have floods, tornadoes, blizzards, and forest fires.

And here's the deal--we also PREPARE, as much as possible. We HAVE storm shelters for the displaced. We HAVE organizations set up to help cope. What we do NOT have is a group of people who, after ignoring all the warnings (and they DID get hit by a storm LAST YEAR) of this storm, (which was predicted at least a week out) who did NOT either evacuate (or if not in a low-lying area) or stockpile supplies, including gasoline, food that will keep, flashlights, batteries, etc.

I feel sorry for those who are suffering. I do. But I'm guessing they can't any of them name the city in MO that was 2/3 FLATTENED by a tornado last year. I'm guessing that not too many of them sent money to the red cross for relief for that disaster (which the town is STILL recovering from.

I have respect and compassion for the truly helpless in this situation, the elderly, the young children.

The rest need to pick themselves up by their boot straps and GET to work. In OUR disaster, we were still DIGGING for survivors a week out. And by that time, all but the LOCAL media had lost interest.

I'm losing interest in Sandy aftermath, because all the news keeps showing is the people who are wailing for someone ELSE to 'come fix it'. In life, that's not how it works.

And PS--I wonder how all those folks would have felt about big tax hikes to pay for up grades to their city's infrastructure? You know, that might have lessened the impact of this disaster, or at least made restoration of services quicker?

And I'd guess I already KNOW how they'd feel about a tax increase to help PAY for all of this.

They want ME and all the other ME's in the country to do that.

We do have storm shelters for the displaced. The difference is in Joplin 8,400 houses were destroyed, in NYC alone there are 20,000-30,000 in shelters. And many many more all over a few states. FYI Joplin recieved over $500 million in the form of federal and state disaster aid. 200,000 people in Joplin and surrounding areas, In other words Joplin recieved more in aide then they will pay in taxes in most of its resident's lifetimes.

You are so wrong with these statements it's not even funny. As if we in the NY Metro area don't have compassion for people lost in disasters. Seriously? We had a pretty horrific disaster here about 12 years ago. Remember that? We didn't forget. Don't tell us we don't know how to get to work and dig people out. You should be ashamed of yourself. As if we don't watch the news and know what happened in Joplin or any other disaster-stricken place on Earth.

From reading the comments on these articles I am just amazed and disgusted at how different some of the responses are when it's a natural disaster in New York and not a man-made one.

When Clinton and Bush were in office - most people had jobs, paid rent and car payments, some had insurance at work and some had retirement plans. For many people - all gone away in the last 2 years. Maybe you have a job, maybe there are a lot of jobs in Ohio but for so many - there are no jobs and now there are 9 states affected by the hurricane and many of those people do not even know if they have a place to go to for work or a job anymore. Do you know what it is like to have 66 weeks of unemployment and then find 2 part time jobs? Do you know what it is like to wonder if there is a shelter who can take a person in? Do you know what it is like to wear donated clothes? Obama/Biden-not for this voter - we can't wait 4 more years.

Dot --sorry, but you can't criticize ONE party for not approving pork laden jobs bills the other party backed, while absolving YOUR party of not even bringing jobs bills to the floor for discussion.

And in MY case, my main problem with many of the DEM jobs bills is that somewhere, deep inside where most don't spot it, there is some kind of AMNESTY for illegal aliens.

HOW exactly does that benefit AMERICANS who are out of work?
