Small earthquake rattles storm-stricken New Jersey

A small earthquake hit northern New Jersey early Monday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The magnitude 2.0 temblor struck at 1:19 a.m. and was centered in Ringwood, N.J., a community that’s still reeling from downed trees and power outages caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Geophysicist Jessica Turner at the National Earthquake Information Center said some people reported hearing a loud boom in their homes, according to The Associated Press. Turner said those on upper floors of a home may have felt shaking or saw objects on walls vibrate.

The quake was 3 miles below ground and could also be felt in Wanaque, Oakland, Franklin Lakes, West Milford and Peterson.

Ringwood police said there are no reports of damage in the area, the Associated Press reported.

The last recorded earthquake in New Jersey struck in February 2010 and measured 2.2 magnitude, Turner said.

the new Madrid fault line is starting to rumble, FEMA is aware of this, they have ordered 10 million MRE, to be delivered before 2014; last time the Mississippi river flowed backwards for 2 days, and church bells rang as far away as Boston.

Seriously? I blame the show "Jersey Shore"! I wondered about how this much water would affect the fault lines.

saxon- the new madrid fault line has been rumbling for decades, if not centuries. I was in high school when that fortune teller predicted and 8.0+. We did have one a bit over 4, but no major damage. The epicenter only had a few broken windows to show for it. As long as we keep having little ones, our chance for a big one isn't too big.

For the people in NJ- good luck and try to stay warm throught the upcoming storm. Hope this little rattle didn't cause any more injuries.

      @Inmissouri

Its not a question of if there will be a major earthquake its a question of when. Risk perception and actual risk are not the same thing.

        #1.10 - Mon Nov 5, 2012 1:47 PM EST

johngis- smaller, frequent earthquakes tend to release pressure so it's less likely to build up to a larger earthquake. Although, yes, there's still a possibility of 'the big one' hitting us. And if it does hit us, there's not really much more you can do besides basic emergency preparation. You won't even get the day or week warning you'd get with a hurricane, possible tornado, blizzard, or ice storm.

        Missouri,

The "Big one" you speak of is in Yellowstone. If that puppy goes there wont be a place on the entire planet that wont be affected oneway or another :(

schoolyard- there have been predictions for decades of another 'big one' meaning an 8.0 plus earthquake on the New Madrid fault line.

But yes, I'm well aware that if the caldera at Yellowstone is set off we likely won't be around to worry about what to call it.

Eruption of Yellowstone's super volcano caldera would make everything else we've experienced pale in comparison.

Having said that, I don't think the New Madrid fault line has anything to do with Yellowstone. I hope.

NAW!! It was just a little reminder to politicians, who came and went; all the meanwhile giving themselves pathetic high fives on TV for a job well done, JUST because they showed up for one day and announced what what the relief plan was...not!!

Reality check: those men, women and CHILDREN DON'T CARE about your public image. They need RELIEF. Thank goodness for the decency of ordinary neighboring citizens and church groups that have stepped in to bring warm food, clothes and blankets without being asked or basking in the limelight to promote themselves. God Bless America for those who still have kindness in their hearts.

Tell that to the Italian government. They REALLY need to hear that.

In 2009 there was a small earthquake swarm in Italy; seismologists were split about the possibility of a major one following the swarm. The general consensus eventually released was that a large one was unlikely--and guess what, a large one hit and 300 people died.

A couple weeks ago the Italian courts sentenced that entire team of seismologists to 6 years in prison for 'misleading' and 'inaccurate' predictions about the possibility of a large earthquake.

Amanda- something I've found, living near a somewhat active fault line: if someone actually claims to have a prediction one way or the other, they're probably wrong.

The seismologists were stupid for submitting an actual prediction, and the govt was stupid for believing it was completely accurate.

inmissouri, you are absolutely correct--I still think it was a travesty that those seismologists were sentenced to prison though, and a stupid move by the Italian government to scare off the rest of the scientists in Italy trying to improve the science of seismology.

They may have or info from a seismometer. Nobody probably felt it at all but seismologist's get an instant phone call or something from the computer alerting them of any seismic movements of the earth that are worth investigating.

Probably a few people who were awake, and sitting or standing still somewhere quiet, did feel it. It wouldn't wake many, unless they had pets that were freaking out, and anyone in a moving vehicle would not have felt it.

The article said some people reported hearing a loud boom. I've been in a small sized earthquake in Bakersfield CA where I live where a loud boom happened with it--back in the 1990's. I've been in several others in California, but not at the epicenter of any big ones except Bakersfield's 1952 earthquake--and I was a baby and slept through that one, even though it shook my crib all the way across the room (according to my mom).

Actually, the earthquake was caused by Gov. Chris Christie jumping up-down in a tantrum about Romney and Fox with their friends icing him for liking Obama. Then a friendly vision of Jimmy Carter appeared and said in a soothing voice, "Calm down Chris, for it is I who created FEMA."

OK, I am NOT a religious fanatic first of all, but DO believe in God. He does not punish anyone! He does NOT cause things like earthquakes to happen. It's all nature doing it!! He made the earth and with all the plates shifting on each other every day,, well yeah, there's gonna be earthquakes!! And other things, what he does do is help those who ask. And we all have dor anything else causing that person to do something. It sure is weird that the East Coast is getting more earthquakes now than California!

Geronimo, just so you know, not all of us Christians agree with the way some Christians condem and say "Haha!! It's because you are all sinners that you suffer!" I believe that we should never take joy in anyone elses suffering. This is what my God and Jesus have taught me. I understand our beliefs are very different and that's ok. I think everyone has to live what they feel is right in their won heart. I just didn't want everyone to think that this is how ALL Christians are. It is not. My God teaches me to love one another, and be kind, humble and caring. It upsets me that people think that we are all judgemental and self rightous. Please know that not all of us are.

No, but reports are it was caused by a house party during the fliming of Jersey Shore.

                                when she fell down.

Nah she farted, too much cheap beer.

I woke up around 3:00 AM when I heard a crash sound ( I live in West Milford ). Because our house has no electricity or heat, I don't sleep to well - the house inside was around 40 degrees..... brrrrrrrrr !!!!

baliman...We're thinking of you. Wish we could send you some warmer weather. Here in the MidWest it gets cold in the house when we lose power with a snow storm. We gotta have a gas oven and a wood burning fireplace. Hang in there!

be careful lighting that stove by hand coco

i find kerosene heaters work well (they smell but should have some fresh air source anyway ) and a small generator ( outside) for emergency power to the things necessary,( not the tv, pc , video games, etc.)

Thanks for the nice words. I feel I'm lucky though - some people had their houses burn down, flooded or swept away. I had 3 big trees fall down on my property, but didn't hit my house or cars. I will be the last on my street to get power back because the lines to my house came down. A neighbor of mine has an extension cord running from his house to mine. I can run one appliance ( coffee maker, electric griddle, space heater, etc. ) at a time. I think this event will cause me and millions of other people to really think about things and to be better prepared for God knows whats next.

Well it can't be that bad in northern NJ..81,000 watched the Giants lose at Metlife stadium Sunday.

Would've been nice if those 81,000 donated $5 instead of having the third beer.

3 deep celled batteries, a marine solar panel & a 2000 watt inverter and you have power recharged by the sun. Run power from one battery while charging the others.

People on sailboats use this all the time. I use it for hurricanes. No gas line to wait in. No monoxide poisoning.

Seriously, I'm overwhelmed by the support shown by folks from other states. The power lines around my home were restored by a power crew from Texas, and right now as I type this, the power lines around my work place are being repaired by Alabama Power. "Ya'll" from other states may make Jersey jokes, but deep inside you care. AWWWW

Its funny how this quake happened after Christie praises Obama for the attention that the President showed his state after Sandy but then appears and announces that Romney is still his choice for President.

Frank- well said..One of the most clear messages Christ gave on wealth was that a rich man has as good a chance of going to heaven as does a camel of going through the eye of a needle.. Most serious Christians are well aware of this teaching..Most people are also aware of how Romney hides his wealth overseas and of his amoral methods of becoming rich..It appears therefore, that Romney will not be going to heaven..The bigger question now becomes: If God will not be giving Romney the keys to His kingdom,,Why on earth would we give him the keys to ours. !

Romney strives for success and contributes both time and money to charity while BO and the democRATs strive for hate and division. New day is coming Wednesday people!!!

Percentage based, Romney gives less to charity. Well, let's call it for what it is. He gives to the Mormon church that has a clear agenda. It's more like he's investing in his self interests.

The rest of your post is some poor attempt to paint Romney as someone that cares about the plight of the little guy. His career has been nothing but taking away from the little guy. Often times, at the tax payers expense.

You preach about how Obama has divided us, yet your post is nothing but divisive.

As far as something being non Christian, it's about time. Too many people want this country ran with oppressive religious overtones.

The Mormon church is an awesome volunteer faith based NGO. They do a ton for their local communities. I use to work in an OEM for the Gulf Coast and this group was outstanding in assisting with recovery efforts and debris removal. I'm not a Mormon by any means but i do greatly appreciate everything they have done and continue to do for their communities.

Just an aside here---how many of you know what literally "camel through the eye of a needle' meant in ancient times? Yes, it was literal, but not in the way most of us picture it today. The 'needle' was a tiny gate that was manned at night--the main gate to the wall-surrounded towns/cities were shut and bolted to prevent thieves from coming in during the night. If a merchant didn't get to the town by sundown, he would have to take all the 'stuff' off the pack camel, get the camel to drop to it's knees, and crawl through the tiny gate called the 'needle'. A hard task, but not impossible. I hope you all can see the symbolism there...:)

Alan - God gave us dominion over this Earth and what has man done? Selfish greed is causing the slow destruction of our Earth with fracking and pollution consuming us. Fracking is causing earthquakes where none existed before; global warming is causing unheard of storms. You want to blame Democrats but Republicans are the ones that refuse to believe that man is at least partially to blame for what is happening. As a Christian, you must know that Mormonism is a cult and that voting for a Mormon is only opening that door towards total anihilation of our Christian faith. Why do Mormons feel the need to supplement the glorious Bible with their own book? Why do they believe in many gods? Why do they believe that God had sex with Mary and that Jesus is the brother of Satan? Who is really mocking God, Alan?

                                            Jack,

LOL. Good one. Never know man. I find it hard to believe we crawled out of the ocean and our tails fell off. BTW, I did hit the advertising button before your post, thanks.

Thanks for the way above post as having NJ in your thoughts. Greatly appreciated. I live in Central NJ about 45 min from the ocean and got hit pretty hard. 80' Oaks came down just behind my fence in the woods. Big mess but cannot complain since we're still alive. :-)

My heart goes out to the people who died. We can rebuild but they can never rebuild. Most people read that so many people died without the thought that they died in pain and may have slowly died. Not all died instantly. Terrible shame man.

For over 150 years plus, Christians of America considered Mormons a cult. Now out of the RED, (not BLUE) the God of Money, aka Mammon, appears. So the renowned Reverend Billy Graham has decided he will go to his grave by worshipping the Romney, the Ayn Rand Atheist devotee, Paul Ryan.

It has been reported; Scientist has looked into the heavens and telescoped a planet about the size of earth made out of pure diamond. All of the riches here on earth cannot compare to the real powers of the Heart Of Love.

                                            FYI,

Obama/Biden are much more lovely elements to the eyes of God than Romney/Ryan.............

"Obama/Biden are much more lovely elements to the eyes of God than Romney/Ryan............." SURE! Especially with the radical Muslim ties Obummer has! Of course, the lamestream media totally discards that truth. Ever wonder WHY Obama bows down to Muslim nations? And WHY he didn't send help in the Banghazi horror while the Ambassor was screaming for help? Oh, he didn't want to tick off his Muslim freinds. And no, I am NOT a Repub or ultra conservative either, Not a Romney lover, but I do not like what our "prez" has turned this country into!

It was a 2.0. Usually humans won't feel those. Was probably picked up by seismograph somewhere. Not a story.

In a region with the largest underground transit system in the world, any seismic event should be taken seriously.

Take heart friends (patriots), the government, and natural gas companies assure us that "fracking" is safe, efficient and environmentally friendly, and no proof it contributes to earthquakes. So, no worries, we can trust our Dept. of the Interior (federal and state agencies), and the legion of fossil fuel corporations advertising it's very safe, "trust us"! Oh and don't worry about the EPA, it's now a "paper" tiger, so don't worry about your water, air, or the land you live on, the same companies assuring us about "fracking", assure us we don't need regulations on them, for they will do the right thing and keep us all safe. -Paul Hester

IA Scooter....Your state is solidly behind President Obama. So is NV, FL and OH. I wouldn't go counting your Rip Van Romney feathers before they moulder just yet...Let's not forget many in the northeast has yet to vote.

As for these "small earthquakes...." This isn't the first one in northern NJ this year. Anyone whoi lives nearest to the border between PA and along the Delaware River will tell you these "small earthquakes" are the same kind that occured in Guy, Arkansas and Fayette Ohio when they allowed fracking there. In Arkansas, when Chesapeake Energy was forced to cease the fracking operation, these small earthquakes magically disappeared.

If those in northern NJ continue to experience earthquakes, PA butt end will suffer the consequences of a huge lawsuit if damages begin to mount. Check out the humongo moolah Big Energy handed to PA's governor for his campaign. And voile! Fracking operations expanded magically. Hey! PA Governor....do you actually have any sense of honor? Or is it all about your hanging onto your job?

                                                  Paul-1316066,

I keep telling people why the Oil Corporations are spending Billions in Advertising to push Natural Gas (Methane). Most people refuse to research the environmental effects and toxicity (and explosive flammable nature) of methane.

It is because the US depleted most of the US Oil during the 1900 "Black Gold Oil Rushes", leaving the US with high sulfur content low grade Oil. During the "1970s Oil Crisis" the high sulfur content low grade US Oil was used resulting in "Acid Rain" (rain with sulfuric acid), that literally burned the leaves off of trees, paint off of cars, etc..

Until someone can figure out what can be used to replace Weather resistant durable Oil Based Plastics used for everything from Alternative Energy to Electrical Wire Insulation. The US can never be without the High Grade Oil from the "Middle East".

Unfortunely, over the years due to President Obama's Policies the US and US Allies have lost most of these World's Resources to maintain the current and future US High Tech Standard of Living, to the Chinese and Russian Federation thru their Proxy Fighter the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran and Iran's Proxy Fighters the Worldwide "Holy Warriors of Islam" as funded by the Trillions USDs per year of Mandatory Islamic Tithes (required by current Islamic Laws).

Part of the US And US Allies Losses to the Chinese and Russian Federation are those Resources required for the manufacturer of US Alternative Energy, as to why the failures of the US Alternative Energy Corporations (Solar, Electric Car Batteries, etc.) that President Obama threw US Taxpayer money at, no materials no US Alternative Energy manufacturered at the US (Jobs).

In 2011 the Chinese placed Restrictions on the Shipments of these materials to the US and US Allies, materials the US and US Allies lost to the Chinese due to President Obama's Policies. This was extremely smart (Strategic) for the Chinese, as this stopped all US High Tech Manfacturing at the US; requiring all US High Tech to be Made In China (boost their economy and Jobs), and the Chinese can "adopt" (steal) all US High Tech Designs, without having to spend lots of time and money for R&D. This is why production of Apple Corporation products shifted from the US (California) to China.

In 2010 the US and US Allies lost the Iraqis Oil to the Chinese and Russian Federation, that could have paid for the US And US Allies Liberation of Iraq with Decades to Centuries of Iraqis Oil, again due to President Obama's Policies.

Even before the First Gulf War (1990s) the Nations of Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, etc. were Oil Laundrying Iraqis Oil, by buying High Grade Iraqis Oil then selling the Iraqis Oil as their own for high profits to the US. This is because they too are running out of Oil. This is why the Canadians started to do their very expensive Environmental Disaster of Strip Mining to extract tons of Oil Shale to squeeze out barrels of Oil. The Mexicans started to do more Oil Drilling like High Risk BP Oil Disaster. The Saudi Arabians start Deep Sand Desert Oil Exploration. The Kuwaits do an Act of War by diagonal (Slant) Drilling into the Southern Iraqis Oil Fields (reason for the Iraqis Invasion of Kuwait). Deep water Oil Exploration is conducted off the Northern waters of South America. US makes deals with President Chavez for the Oil that the US was previously getting from Venezuela before the US attempted to start a Civil War (1999-2000), due to President Chavez declaring Oil Nationalization. This loss of the Iraqis Oil made the Libyan Oil of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies.

Actually, graybeard...they need our help. Disaster strikes all over this country. Hurricanes, tornados, flooding, draught, forest fires, earthquakes....No place on this planet is "safe".

The only thing I've taken away from this is how generous and loving and helpful some folks are, and how hateful and cruel and spiteful others are. Dragging politics and G-d into everything doesn't help the mother that lost both of her young boys...or the thousands of people who are facing the winter storm approachng without heat. Are some of these folks going to be jumping up and down with glee when homes start burning down because people are lighting fires in their homes to keep warm? Are we going to say it's G-d's will when others suffer so much loss and devastation, while we are all wrapped up in the warmth of our sanctamony?

They need our help...pure and simple. That's what neighbors do, that's what friends do....that's what fellow American's do. I've donated to the Salvation Army. It's not much, but every drop fills the bucket.

Pam Montgomery - Dragging politics and G-d into everything doesn't help

Tell that to President Obama Visiting New Jersey (as the Demoncraps flamed, and named New Jersey Mayor Krispy Kreme).

With the Mayor of NYC telling President Obama NOT to visit because they have important work to do.

Anytime a US President "Visits" the Roads get locked down; Local, City, State Law Enforcement get diverted from keepiing the roads open for Emergency First Responders and Assistance, to Road Blocks.

If there is even a hint of anything then even Cellular Phone Service is Blocked, so no Emergency calls.

And lots of excetera that are detrimental to Relief Efforts, for what a Photo Opportunity for the President.

Even Repugnant President Bush knew about the diversion of limited Local, City, State resources after Katrina (what he said and did (flew over)).

And what would you rather have a President that knows nothing about Disaster Relief or the FEMA that learned their lessons from Katrina managing the Relief Efforts. The proof (Actions, not "empty words") is President Obama's Proposal to US Congress that demands "Across the Board" Budget Cuts to previously Budgeted For Agencies (like FEMA), Programs (like Medicare), Projects (US Army Corps of Engineers Infrastructure Longterm Projects within the US), including the Entitlements and Benefits of the "47%"; to pay for President Obama spending $2.1 Trillion that was not previously Budgeted for.

Gosh, I guess those earthquakes are caused by climate change. No one seems to figure out that the losses are all manmade crap and if they were reasonable about where they chose to live chances of less damage are greatly increased. Flooding is not unexpected when you live at or below sea level. But of course, government protection makes it so much easier to cover your losses.

Hog Lover...Yes...they are "man made"...heat up the atmosphere with CO2 from coal fired furnaces and Big Oil refineries...heated atmosphere = heated sea temperatures = melting glaciers = higher sea levels = more flooding inland = man made fracking drilling into the core of the earth = earthquakes that rattle deep underground earthquake fault lines = above ground man made "small earthquakes" - You guys getting any of this yet?

If there is one thing Hurricane Sandy taught us Jerseyans, it's that the excesses we came to believe were "necessities" aren't. And one of the biggest excesses are the loonies who think it's a necessity to own a gas guzzler.

But let's all pretend to be "conservatives" until Hurricane Sandy washes your home into the ocean and then man made conservatives fight for their place on the FEMA lines like the hypocrites they are...They hate government until they NEED government help that comes from the rest of us taxpayers.

You can name the berms at New Jersey anything you want berms, sea walls, levees, they all do the same thing, with the same results when they fail, flooding.

Like I mentioned before these berms (aka Levees) at New Jersey were not maintained due to a lack of funding just like the Levees at New Orleans, ever since the President Clinton US Defense Budget Cuts; since the US Army Corps of Engineers Budget to maintain US Waterways (like the berms, levees, bridges, beaches, sea walls, dredging, water reservoirs, etc.) is part of the US Defense Budget. And President Obama in his Proposal to US Congress will further chop this by 11%, after his previous April 2009 US Defense Budget Cut, etc. (President Obama's bullsh!t empty words promises about Rebuilding US Infrastructure, his actions speak louder than his empty promises.).

These Longterm US Army Corps of Engineer Infrastructure Projects, Programs take years to decades, due to Legal requirements of reviews by US Congress, CBO, GAO, Environmental Impact Studies, Lawsuits, Court Cases, etc..

Here are some excerpts from that response, translated into English:

We and Allah should be happy and we should celebrate for what has come against the prideful tyrants. America is the leader of oppression and tyranny throughout this century and it uses its money to oppress the Muslim people and Muslim nations from the far East to the far West…

Why shouldn't we celebrate when the prophet Muhammad said: "Oh Allah force your might on those who harm us."

Shouldn't we celebrate and be happy when Allah answer the prayers of the oppressed?…

The wind that is destroying America is a blessing from Allah, we should be thankful and be happy "to God belongs the order before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice, in the help of Allah;- Allah helps whom He will, and He is mighty, merciful.-"
