Some evacuations ahead of nor'easter; Mother Nature 'going to keep kicking us'

David Friedman / NBC News

Richard Mele of Breezy Point, N.Y., on Tuesday looks over some fishing tackle he salvaged from his flooded home.

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. -- With a nor'easter expected by Wednesday afternoon, residents of the areas hardest hit by Superstorm Sandy were urged to leave and, in some cases, ordered to. Some airlines also announced cancellations at New York area airports starting Wednesday afternoon.

People still in low-lying areas of Staten Island and the Rockaways are being urged to leave, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. He also ordered parks and beaches closed on Wednesday.

In New Jersey, Brick Township ordered mandatory evacuations, NBCPhiladelphia.com reported. That area of Ocean County was where Sandy made landfall on Oct. 29.

The developing nor'easter is expected to track farther offshore than earlier thought, but that will mean even colder air along the coast.

Gusts up to 50 miles per hour and several inches of snow are possible in New York City and along the New Jersey coast starting Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service warned Tuesday.

"It's going to impact many areas that were devastated by Sandy," said National Weather Service forecaster Bruce Terry. "It will not be good."

Outside of Manhattan, New York residents are still facing a power outage as temperatures drop and the region braces for another storm. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Some coastal flooding is also a possibility in places like Breezy Point in the Rockaways.

Richard Mele, a 68-year-old retired New York City firefighter, was pumping out water from his flooded basement in Breezy Point to try and salvage any keepsakes ahead of the nor’easter.

"There’s no stopping this water from coming again tomorrow," he said, as a generator hummed in the background and while standing in front of a table bearing rare wooden, handmade fishing lures.

The ground is so saturated that Mele can’t get the water out permanently. "It’s going to rain three inches," he said. "It’s going right in my basement."

"When it rains it pours," he added. "We’re down and it’s just going to keep kicking us."

Michele Nagel, in her 40s, said she'd close the windows and that was about it.

“Everything we own is outside on the porch. It’s all awash, literally, it’s awash,” she laughed. “Nothing else you can do.”

The worst flooding is expected "at high tide, mainly along northern and northeast-facing beaches," weather.com reported, "but will be much lower than the magnitude of Sandy's coastal flooding."

Temperatures across the Northeast have been dipping into the low 30s, and nearly one million homes and businesses remained without power as of Tuesday morning.

The updated forecast now calls for snow.

"Cold air will wedge itself along the I-95 corridor to bring some accumulating snows from Delaware to Maine," the weather service's prediction center stated. "A few inches are possible" in cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia, it added.

Full coverage of Sandy's aftermath

The incoming storm will create additional storm surge, wind, and more power outages for the already besieged East Coast. Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore reports.

In Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., Laura DiPasquale on Monday frantically searched dozens of trash bags that volunteers had stuffed full of her household belongings and brought to the curb, trying to make sure nothing she intended to keep had gotten tossed out with debris.

"I don't know where anything is; I can't even find my checkbook," she told The Associated Press. "I have no idea what's in any of these bags. And now another storm is coming and I feel enormous pressure. I don't know if I can do this again. It is so overwhelming."

Want to help the recovery? Here's how

Sandy roared ashore as a rare hybrid superstorm after killing 69 people in the Caribbean and then merging with a strong North Atlantic system.

It killed at least 113 in the United States and knocked out power to millions of people while swamping seaside towns and inundating New York City's streets and subway tunnels.

Residents across the Northeast pick up the pieces after Superstorm Sandy killed more than 100 people in 10 states and left a trail of destruction.

More than 217,000 people had registered for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and about $199 million in has been provided, Reuters reported.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Yeah, it's already starting to get cold here in NY. This morning we woke up to frost on our windows. Big change in the weather from last week. Much colder now..... unfortunately still too many power lines down.

Already my church has donated two truck loads of free generators to people who are still without power.

Since we know this is coming... are there any plans for the people whose homes were damaged/destroyed? Are there any shelters for them? These people have already faced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, will their Governors force them to face this storm alone? Will the federal government help at all?

These people are not moochers from the welfare ranks, they are people who tax-paying Americans who should be able to get some assistance in their time of need!

We, as a nation, need to start understanding that this is going to be the new norm. Our planet is getting warmer. That is a fact. Why it's getting warmer is up to debate. Now, you may ask, "If it's getting warmer, why all of the storms and crazy snow?"

The earth doesn't just get warmer in the summertime. It's a year-round effect. This causes severe weather. Just watch. In three or five years, this kind of storm will be a yearly event.

Hope I'm wrong.

Go ahead, haters.

Hurricane Katrina was far more severe, and Bush was severely criticized for FEMA not acting faster - but the media is strangely silent on the lack of support for those suffering from this Hurricane.

6 days without power and 21 degrees last night. Still, we are blessed to have survived. Things come and go, friends and family are forever.

G of F - On housing alone it is obvious the "administration" has no plan. They watched this thing come from a boozillion miles away, and are NOW wondering what combination of things may be needed to house these people. No planning what so ever for a hit like this in a densey populated area. I'm with Roy. Media refuses to call a spade a spade in this case, but was running around with their pecker in their hand while keel hauling Bush during Katrina. Democrats own the freakin media, just admit it.

Really, Jersey Girl 1? Last I heard, from my friends and family that still live in NJ, NY and CT, things are being accomplished, slowly, but stuff is getting done. What you MORONS seem to forget, is the sheer number of people affected. NJ and NY, alone, have almost 28 MILLION people. DO you really think that with all the cuts, with all the destruction, that POOF! Things get done in such a short period of time? Since you live in NJ, you should know better. The sheer congestion of the state makes it difficult to help everybody. Not to mention, the very same laws that protect state's rights, also prevent the federal government from doing certain things, until other resources are used up. Get a clue.

Well, Jersy Girl, isn't it your party that is always telling us we don't need the Federal Govt? Now is the time to show us how that works, or maybe it is time to say, you know we do need the government, and maybe we need to take a good look at our infrastructure.

I hate that the weather seems to be getting ready to give these poor folks a double whammy. But one thing the politicians can't control is the weather!

There are always going to be those that criticize the various governments for not doing enough in situations like this. Those that have been directly affected do it out of hurt, frustration and a whole long list of emotions in the heat of the moment. That is understandable Those who haven't been directly affected are just complainers. It seems that what neither group, especially the latter seems to realize is that all governments local, state and federal are kept running by our tax dollars. None of us want our taxes increased, but we always want our respective governments to do more. The problems in this country can't be cured over night. This problem of ours has been over 200 years in the making. Nothing will change unless both parties can learn to work together for the betterment of ALL OF US, NOT THEIR SELF INTERESTS! The two party system and especially the way it's financed, is what really needs to be changed. There has to be more options for us to choose from than just the Repuglicans or the Dumbocrats.

If things are getting accomplished is not due to FEMA. Just got power back last night and I thanked the crew from Con Ed. Turns out they were from Florida.

The biggest difference to me is the local governments of New Orleans compared with those of NJ, NY, and CT.

I didn't hear of any cases of our PD departments running a scheme to steal cars and sell them for a profit or shooting random citizens.

We typically do not rely on Federal help in a crisis. Our local infrastructure is more capable than those of most states.

Kudos to NYPD and NYFD.

Just look up the story of how they are emptying the transit tunnels of the water that spilled in. Its our local workers with the right tools working around the clock.

I don't agree with Bloomberg's decision to try and run the marathon, but the forced evacuations were run well as were the deployments of the first responders.

A well prepared local government is going to be faster and more efficient than any federal response.

I would have to agree . FEMA is no where to be found. What you are seeing is people getting help from churches and other Non-govt. charities/ volunteers.

So please spare us that the Government is doing a lot for us..... we can't take anymore lying.

To be honest, I'm actually surprised that I didn't hear of FEMA charging anyone this time. I know last year, during Hurricane Irene, they were charging people left and right for their services.

With the ground in coastal New Jersey towns still saturated with ocean water, officials feared the Nor'easter could flood them again. In Belmar, Lake Como and Spring Lake, officials pumped out three lakes to allow groundwater to drain into them.

If they are draining these 3 lakes, wonder where the water in the lakes is being drained to? Seems the water from those 3 lakes will inundate somewhere else?

People who live outside the tri-state metropolitan area of NY, NJ and CT have no idea what stamina people in these three states have. Most of NY City's subways are up and running and people are back to work...one week after the worst hurricane since 1938.

This is an area that is the most densely populated in the country. Not only is the population comprised of regular residents but also numerous visitors who come to NY City before venturing to other states. It's always been a hub and always will be.

The Jersey Shore has always had serious beach erosion. Somehow, the beach area residents have determination and resilience and no matter how hard Mother Nature hits, they just pick themselves up, dust themselves off and start all over again.

As for the coming Nor'easter...if the winds are only 50 mph, we'll all manage. Most of the trees and wires that came down during Hurricane Sandy endured 80 plus mph winds. Downed trees are Mother Nature's way of weeding out the weak from the strong.

One lesson of Mother Nature from last week's monster storm is learning the difference between what you "need" and what you "want." You may want all of the excesses life has to offer but you may not "need" them. The more excesses and material things we surrounded ourselves with, the deeper the sense of loss when a disaster hits.

        A very, very providential lesson.

Bill, not all Nor'easters are snow. I'm in New England and we get them at any time of year. In the summer/spring they are rain. In the fall/winter they can be rain or snow. It varies.

I used to live in NJ, and ewent is right. I can remember, on a regular basis, summer storms would down trees and power lines, and even small tornadoes would hit. The shore always was being bulldozed to fix erosion, and LBI was in constant danger of disappearing. Fall was one constant storm after the next, with annoying pouring rain, the worst on days that were just above freezing. Flooding was a constant, especially along Rte 1 & 9. I can remember being in Rahway, and trying to drive friends home. I had to drive all the way up to Edison, and go around, to drop them off at homes near Woodbridge Mall and Colonia.

one week after the worst hurricane since 1938.

better be careful, you don't want it named a hurricane at landfall (think deductibles on your homeowners). Simply call it "the worst natural disaster" and it is better...

          Steve:

The worst part of this whole disaster is that they are stringing up the power lines on the poles again.

Why not learn from the past and bury the lines.

That's the same question repeatedly posed in the south after hurricanes. The argument given is always that the cost exceeds the benefits. There are in reality some good reasons. Cost is a factor but the transmission loss is also vastly greater (I believe 30% higher) which then increases final cost too. I think the actual cost per mile is something like 10 times greater underground and add to that the fact the underground route usually has to be longer. And obviously the utilities really don't care because they directly pass on the cost of post-storm repairs to the consumer. Almost 25% of my utility bill is for "bond charges" related to reimbursing my utility for Katrina/Rita/Gustav repairs. And the sick part is my actual utility provider didn't have damage during the first two, they just felt it was fairer to re-distribute the cost over more people. I suspect many in the Northeast will have a rude awakening in a few years time when books get balanced on this disaster. Nearly every Public Service Commission is very quick to make sure that they still pay out the same in interest to shareholders as it has always been deemed a safe investment vehicle.

              Ron,

Because of our large carbon footprint, we have blown a hole in the ozone layer. The ice cap at the North Pole is now melting. We have caused the temperature of water bodies to rise by 1 degree. We have chopped down huge numbers of trees and deforested vast wildlife lands, and we have made extinct marine and mammal life.

Yet, the greedy whine and compalin about "big government" overregulating industry production. The insatiable folks call empirical science that proves that our reckless behavior has damaged our planet, "june Science." Maybe if one of these hurricanes or storms blow away some of their yachts, will they then start to look for safer alternatives for our lifestyles.

While they bury the courts in documents to solidify their stance, they claim they can't be sure that pollution is what's causing the environmental shift... but while they can't be sure, they won't be inclined to stop production until further studies are done.

Once you can do that with ease, and I am sure you will, then you can move on to screaming "Neener-neener!" at schoolchildren waiting for the bus. No Dave,

My logic is that a great many of us in the USA are trying to conserve and produce more efficiently. We currently have equal to or the most strict EPA laws in the world. Yet there are morons that think that regulating our country out of existence will make it all better. NO GDP = NO USA

China is soon to own us at the rate we are going anyway, you can argue that point with their communist government and see how far you get.

There are still, at the time of this posting, about a half million people in the tri-state area without heat, and electricity. Garbage is piling up in the streets of some outer lying neighborhoods in NJ, LI, southern Westchester, and Ct.lines for gas can be up to 2 hours long. There are people who haven't taken a hotshower, or eaten a hot meal for a week now. And yes, there are people who got sick and died as a result of this hurricane.

But, Obama goes to NJ for a photo-op with Chris Christie, and the perception is that hisFEMA team has everything under control.

That's absolutely not the case. Entire neighborhoods have been wiped out, and in some areas FEMA hasn't done a damned thing.

If we had a different President, he would be criticized for his lack of concern, and his lack of response.

But THIS guy gets a pass on EVERYTHING.

So, when people go to the voting booth today, they need to remember this, and Benghazi.

Because Obama really doesn't give a damn about us, and we need a President who does!

The storms do land here in Florida. That storm (excuse me hurricane) wouldn't have prompted even an evacuation because 1) we build our houses better 2) we don't build right on the beach, in flood plains, and, most importantly 3) we don't whine and complain when a pier gets washed away (happens often here)...we shut up and rebuild. Oh yes, we also let any electric company from any state come in with their utility trucks and help. You idiots up there turned away all non-union utility trucks. When a storm hits we drop our differences to get the job done. You people up there don't even allow people to help your own people. So take a hike whiners...clean up your own mess and yell at each other because your gestalt is the problem.

Cruise New York and Jersey...if you dare...oh yes...just have to watch out what neighborhood you are in...give me a break...Jersey and Yorkers don't know what a heart is...unless it's tied to a handout that they get. I don't believe there was much help from jersey or yorkers for the Katrina people. You were too busy saying other people don't have a heart to help. Your self righteous BS makes me puke.

Because we pay in more to the federal government then we receive here in NJ. We are also almost always the first state to send help to any other state when they are in need.

I've lived in Florida and now in New Jersey...Florida is a @!$%#hole plain and simple and yes they get hurricanes and yes people whine and complain when their favorite fishing pier blows away. Stop trying to sound better than everyone because it just makes you look bad. I'll take New Jersey over any place in Florida any day of the week. And by the way....do a little fact checking before you open your ignorant mouth. THERE WERE NO CREWS FROM ANY POWER COMPANY TURNED AWAY BECAUSE THEY WERE NON-UNION. this was false from the start and carried OVER AND OVER AND OVER by the liberal news outlets, who, surprisingly enough are PRO Union. it is a lie, a fabrication, an untruth. The Red cross, FEMA, and the National Guard are in NJ helping but at the moment 90% or more of assistance is coming from local people, and people from other states who, unlike you, actually give a @!$%#. You know NOTHING about what goes on here so why don't you just shut your F**king stupid face?

I just hope the Red Cross is doing more to help these people. I really feel for my home state... Doesn't help to think of the Red Cross as not doing as much, but when you receive a call at the non-profit organization you work at and hear that a customer called the Red Cross in PA and they had no idea what was going on or how to help those in NJ, it's a little disheartening.

A lot of people did not evacuate the last time and it put them at risk. Let's hope it was a lesson learned. At the same time, these people need some place to go for food and shelter.

..and for the rest of your extremely IGNORANT comment - is a type of macro-scale storm along the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada, so named because the storm travels to the northeast from the south and the winds come from the northeast, especially in the coastal areas of New England and Atlantic Canada. This type of storm has characteristics similar to a hurricane. More specifically it describes a low-pressure area whose center of rotation is just off the East Coast and whose leading winds in the left forward quadrant rotate onto land from the northeast. The precipitation pattern is similar to that of other extratropical storms.

President Obama took off as much time as he could to help the residents of NJ - who have been hit the hardest and even made personal appearances where he could.

Besides making sure more funds and resources are given to the people who have been affected and rescue workers, really what more could he do???

Or you all children or just don't understand politics?

Of course Cuomo and Christie are going to praise Obama, because they want him to send them billions to help out with the recovery.

actually Obama and the federal government has been helping here. And its been call a nor'easter for a long time here. Unlike most storms it comes with a very strong north eastern wind hence the name.

Romney wouldn't be helping us here either. Romney actually wants to do away with FEMA, I believe he referred to it as immoral and that if we need disaster relief, it should come from private organizations.

Another, I'm living here... I see it... the people are complaining because the REFUSE to go to the shelters and are stuck eating military rations which honestly are gross.... their water isn't "hot" enough for them... so instead of building a fire.. trust me there are enough down trees.. and heating it themselves.. its the red cross not doing their jobs!!! People need to take repsonsibility for their own actions.. and every once in while help themselves. THERE is no area devestated that wasn't told to evacuate the fact that some didn't should not be everyone elses issue.

Remember: If your house was blown away in the wind or washed away in the flood, you must tell us what we want to hear-- how optimistic you are, how resilient, how cheerful, how unconquerable is your spirit. For we who are unaffected by the storm do not want to hear about how you really feel in the midst of tragedy, as that would force us to face our own vulnerability and mortality, and it would shatter our illusions, our delusions, of being in complete control of everything that happens in our lives. Yes, keep on smiling, jesting, and telling us how tough you are so we can peacefully sip our warm cappuccinos over our warm breakfasts in our warm homes far away from ground zero. It's the right thing to do!

Where do you people get the ballz to say such cruel things? These are human beings who lost everything they own. They never did anything to you or your families. You, obviously, have never faced a real tragedy. You only face the travesty of your lives. How sad. 'What goes around, comes around'.

You have some serious psychiatric issues in need of urgent treatment, Bird. I suggest you run, not walk, to the local free clinic, and I am sure they will place you with people you can relate to. In time, you'll get used to having your arms strapped to your side, and wearing diapers is something I know you have a lot of experience with. Enjoy. You're welcome.

I am in New Jersey, affected by this storm, and I don't have a problem with Bird's comment. It's called sarcasm, people. He is saying it's ridiculous to expect anyone NOT to complain or be sad or crying on TV when everything you own has been taken by the ocean. Yes, we are tough in NY and NJ, but we're still human and it still sucks to see our states ravaged by this storm. Places that have been fixtures in our lives for generations are now gone. It's easy for people in Florida to tell us to suck it up. It happens all the time to them. This has never happened to us before!

I don't suppose you could for a minute think that maybe, just maybe Obama and Christie are thinking of helping the survivors of the storm and not their political careers. It is obvious that you are projecting your own choices onto others. Not everyone is always thinking of the "main chance". Sometimes our elected leaders do what is the "right thing to do" and not just for political advantage. It must be a terrible way to live to always be cynical with that dark cloud above you.

You know sometime people do the RIGHT THING for the RIGHT REASON. I tend to believe in my fellow man and am not as cynical as some. In this case I believe both Christie and Obama did what they thought was the right and best thing for the people not what was best for their careers. Have you ever held political office and had to do what was right for the people you SERVED, I have and it is not hard to do.

I have to disagree, if you look at Obama's history you will see that he does what he does because he cares. He cares about people, he cares about America, he cares about the people of the world. He wants to be President in order to serve and make America better, Romney wants to be President because, he just wants to be President, just like he wants to be richer, because he thinks he can.

Wish he would have cared enough about Americans in Benghazi and gave them the security support they requested months before the attack. Also to respond with expedient and sufficient forces when the attack started. He still is avoiding to answer any hard questions about it.

The weather in the 1950s was natural and happened with CO2 levels at 315 ppm. Well below the 350 ppm that has been proclaimed to be the "safe" level.

But the same weather today is being claimed to be unnatural and happening because CO2 levels are at 395 ppm.

Same weather. Regardless of CO2 level.

Thank God it is in the NY and NJ area, they have all the money needed from the government to return every thing to normal. Victims of Katrina and the oil spill are still waiting for some relief. That's how democracy works, those who have, get and those who don't have get nothing. That the American way. if you want justice you better have a large bank account. How much democracy or justice do you want today.

Umm, from what I saw of the footage, a lot these folks did not appear to have large bank accounts. Just "regular folks" living their lives. You are one bitter guy.

What truth there is to it I do not know but there is a theory that they plan to turn that whole area into an oil area and drive everyone out one way or another. I wouldn't doubt if there is some truth to it.

Gary Hanson - you are an uneducated idiot. I live in NJ and have been affected by the storm. I do not have a large bank account, nor can I just easily fix all of the problems for my neighbors and other residents. I find it SO funny to see that so many people in other states are lecturing us and telling us we deserve it. Is that really the American way? I have never wished harm on those who live in hurricane, earthquake, tornado, snow, etc. - prone zones and know that the average good-hearted person hasn't either. But, seriously, do you feel proud of yourself, Gary, for "thanking God" that it happened to ME... and not someone else outside of my state? Do you know me? No. So grow the fuuck up.

The disgust that these people have with FEMA is not an issue that is getting much attention like it did with Katrina. I wonder why?

I have many friends in that area and they are digusted with the governments reponse to this, both on the local and federal level.

I guess they can blame it on Bush....

No, we blame it on Obama. He gives so much money to other nations, that there is nothing left to help his own country.

Actually i know allot of people who were happy with the response we got. I mean you can not please everyone. But most understand they cant fix everything instantly there was massive and widespread damage. I will admit i know a handful of people mad because stuff is not like it was before the storm yet, but most of them were just looking for a reason to hate.

No..blame LIPA, ConEdison, ESP&G, the only thing people are mad about is the amount of time it takes to get power back up and they are CONTROLLED by these bodies in those areas. Lipa in Long Island, Con Edison in NYC and ESP&G in NJ... so far, P&G have been the only ones that admit they weren't as prepared because they didn't think it would hit so hard...

With these PRIVATELY owned monopolies, no one else can step in...

As far as food and supplies, shelters and such, they are all available.

Thanks New Jersey resident my whole life. It would have took you 2 whole clicks to find that out too, I'm not hiding under some random name. And that would be why half of NJ is rationing, not due to supply problems but to reduce waiting time in lines.

"As New Jerseyans continue the long process of recovering from Hurricane Sandy, it's imperative that our families have secure, reliable access to essential supplies like fuel," said Christie in a statement issued just before 8 p.m. He cited the long lines and otherwise disorderly sales of fuel following Hurricane Sandy.

As a mater of fact people filling gas cans were exempt from the rationing.

Again just a few clicks to find. Are you even from the area? You seem to have a loose grasp on the facts.

Proud, people are waiting in long lines because there was no gas coming into the area until recently. Roads, bridges and tunnels were closed and there was no way for gas stations to get their supply.

It's fixed now and it isn't AS bad but if people had generators, there would be a bigger demand for gas...not less.

Dave, I think Proud meant if the gas stations had generators (I could be misreading, however, but I'm going to go along that thought line here, so bear with me) there wouldn't be long lines because then those stations without power could pump their gas as well.

Unfortunately, Proud, as Gov. Christie in NJ discovered, most gas stations in the Tri-State can't be hooked to generators to pump the gas. I didn't fully catch why, I'm guessing it was considered a safety precaution or an anti-theft device? In any case, it was only after Katrina that Florida passed a law stating all gas stations had to be modified so generators could be used to power the pumps in an emergency. Expect NY and NJ to pass the same law and follow up on it once things settle down.

Gas couldn't come in because all the ports were closed - the Coast Guard only reopened them yesterday and the gas is now coming in. They're transporting it as fast as possible to all sites that need it, and John Hess has also been allowing Hess Gas to be sold at competitors stations if they need it to keep things up and running. And Michael, Gov. Christie has to be on to something there - the County Exec of Rockland, NY, followed his example and set up the odd/even days system for purchasing gas here. At first he held to the 10 gallon limit, but he's since dropped that and plans to soon drop the odd/even system, too, since gas is getting here relatively easily. Two stations closed yesterday morning and were reopened by late afternoon with full supplies. And on a lighter note, the new Hess Truck goes on sale Friday! :-)

That comes out to just over $900 per person. Hardly going to pay your bills for a month or if you have no place to live, no home, no car, no food. Now this next storm coming could be the dagger in the heart of many thousands of people in this area. It's a real shame. You should never rely on anyone else especially this government for the help you might need. Just remember the election and The Race are way more important to them then people's lives. It took until late last Friday for a stupid, inane, idiot politician to cancel the marathon when everyone else in America knew that should have been done on Monday or early Tuesday morning. These are the folks in charge and its pretty sick.

I know the marathon thing is hard to understand from outside the area. But thats just the way New York rolls. They take the hits and want to continue on with life as soon as possible.

A waste of money and resources during a disaster. I think our first responders have more important things to do. That's why the people said are you insane Bloomberg. No marathon

So what money would they have been wasting? The NYC marathon brings allot of money to the businesses in NYC that money people in need could have earned to rebuild.

Alan, FEMA relief [at the individual level] is meant only to help with the GAP between direct disaster relief and one's insurance policy.

Always interesting to read through the posts on a story like this one. They invariably move from the topic of the story to a political free-for-all of blaming and deviousness, which has NOTHING to do with the story, in this case the in pending storm-by what ever name you want to call it. Small wonder our country is so divided and incapable of getting anything done.

In today's polarized nation everyone wants to prove they think their ideas are better for everyone else... funny, right??

I'm just amazed at the amount of blabbering that goes back and forth between everyone posting on here. I live in NY and I was hit with the storm. I do not have a big bank account and have been staying with relatives for the past 9 days because I still do not have power. If this storm comes before my power is restored, I'm sure I'm out another week. An area in Queens that was hit extremely hard is a hard working blue collar area. Another location by me where whole houses are gone is one of the more poor neighborhoods. None of these people deserve what happened to them. The people that were hit by Katrina, the oil spill and tornadoes did not deserve it either. We are all apart of the same country and it is so disheartening to see some of these cruel posts. This is a time where fellow Americans should lend out a hand and help and not knock others for a flood they did not ask for no matter where they live. So stop all the caddy BS and do something about it instead of talking about it. My heart goes out to ALL victims of any natural disaster, no matter the size. Good Luck to all!

Well said. The insensitivity, ignorance of the situation, and in some cases even a complete lack of regard for victims from some of the people on here is very disheartening.

Maybe if NYC people wised up and kicked out there Mayor and some others nitwits they would not be in this situation...Hey after all, a Wall breaker and updated Infrastructure could avoided a disaster like this..But there politicians are more worried about soft drinks and trans fat...LOL

Plenty of shelters available, but some people would rather live in their own house then a gym or cafeteria.

Michael is correct, there are PLENTY of shelters available and plenty of help. People have been helping each other and sad to say it, but those hit hardest are the ones that were told well in advance to evacuate and didn't.

We were told WELL in advance to stock up on non-perishable goods, water, find an escape route. People thought it was gonna be like Hurricane Irene and shrugged it off.

NYC, Long Island and most of NJ is well taken care of - even with the homes destroyed...and I can GUARANTEE any house along the shore in Long Island was owned by those that have the resources to bounce back. NJ is a more rural state so it will take longer to get to everyone since they are spread out more. This is however, an excellent job by the local and federal government.

People are more upset about the lack of electricity, which is owned by local monopolies and municipalities that can' be touched by outsiders. So, they will just have to deal with the way it comes out.

Gas supply is the real problem.

Not to mention the looting. People left their houses and came back to all the copper piping pulled out. And the people who stayed have to guard their generators due to the stealing at night
