Rape suspect in violent D.C. attacks allegedly gave phone number to victim

Police in Washington D.C. arrested a suspect in two violent attacks after he gave his name and number to the second victim, according to court documents.

DeMarco Myles, 19, wrote down his first name and cell phone number for a 19-year-old Howard University student after he allegedly raped her in her room at Bethune annex, an all-women’s dorm, Friday afternoon. Police tracked the number to a Fourth Street NW address where Myles lives with his mother and arrested him.

The first attack took place in a Rhode Island Row apartment Oct. 26 in Northeast D.C. The victim, a 24-year-old consultant, was working from home when she got a knock at the door about 2 p.m. by a man who said he was promoting a party. He forced his way in to her apartment before allegedly trying to kill her. She said she screamed at the top of her lungs and fought back as he kicked and beat her and stabbed her at least 25 times.

The Howard student told police the suspect appeared in her room and made casual conversation about 1:15 p.m. Friday, one week after the first attack. She told him to get out, but he didn’t. She began texting a friend, and the suspect pulled out brass knuckles with a purple blade, grabbed the victim’s phone, texted the victim’s friend and then raped the victim, according to court documents. Then he allegedly wrote the note, saying, “Since you don’t know me, here’s my number.” He tried to cross out the phone number, according to court documents, but detectives were able to read it.

A man matching Myles’s description entered other rooms at Bethune but left when asked, detectives learned.

Myles told detectives that the sex with the Howard student was consensual, but he admitted forcing his way in to the Rhode Island Row apartment and stabbing her after she resisted, according to court documents. He asked detectives if she survived, saying he didn't mean to kill anyone.

In each attack, the suspect managed to get past several layers of security. At Howard, that included locked doors and a sign-in process. At Rhode Island Row, you need a key card for the front door, a key card for the elevator and a key card for the apartment.

Howard is investigating how the man gained entry to the dorm:

The safety of our campus community is paramount; we have consistently enhanced security and have taken additional steps to bolster security in residence halls. A security team is providing a visible 24-hour presence in all residence halls.

The perimeter doors are secured with electric magnetic locks and a Key Card access system. Cameras monitor and record all entry and exit points.

We should give his name and number to the inmates of the prison we send him to.

So he forced his way in, she resisted, but it was consensual? These are his words? Mind boggling isn't it?

Wowza, there were two different attacks. He claims sex with one of the women was consensual, but not the other.

Myers has read too many romance novels, or watched too many television soap operas. I remember one episode of Quantum Leap, where a woman said that it was rape the first time, and love all the times afterwards.

Rapist, think differently than normal persons; they are all sociopaths persons, very dangerous; they attempt to gain the confidence of the victim first, then attack when they are rebuffed; they are incurable, they are very dangerous, they must be taken out of society, as long as they are on the loose they will continue their rampage.

I can see Myles on his first day in the prison shower, with his number tattooed on his butt, and he's singing "...I may be crazy, butt here's my number, so call me maybe ..."

Maybe an inside chain lock properly secured might be a good idea in these places, adjacent to a security panic button.

punisher, apart from your lack of coherent sentence structure, what doesn't add up is that many urban males are feral creatures, roaming streets night and day with no purpose other than impulsively doing something that is illegal and harmful to others, especially to women and children. Unless someone has lived in or near a high density area, such as some low income 'hoods of metro Washington, they wouldn't believe how incredibly stupid most of these criminals are - the result of generations of stupid/mentally ill breeding with stupid/mentally ill. In every large city and in all these inner city quadrants, such as NE DC, there are not enough spaces in jails and not enough mental health facilities, let alone free birth control clinics to stop it at the source. That's how you get some 1/2 wit teen/20-something rapist thug who thinks he has hit upon a new way to speed date.

the punisher - really, you cant figure out how he managed to get past keycard checkpoints?

clearly you've never walked in a building that has one.

If you dont have a keycard you wait until someone does and is opening the door, and then "catch up to them" so you dont have to use your own.

Same rule follows for every point on the inside of the building that requires it.

College kids, in general, arent thinking every person coming through the door with you are rapists...you just either assume it's a student in the same dorm and they are just taking advantage of the fact that only one person needs unlock the door...or it's a boyfriend of someone in the dorm, who obviously wouldnt have their own access - but is otherwise welcome to come in.

I work in a building with a keycard - we often hold the door for people so they dont have to pull their own keycard out. I dont always recognize everyone ...but it just feels rude to quickly shut the door, when they are only a few feet behind you.

Thumbs up to Jessica for a well written considerate response and explanation.
Punisher, what gives man? or woman? Are you just in a bad mood? Jessica answered your question, which seems like life's experience and a bit of imagination might have already answered for most. Why the put down?

"My bad, I don't go around doing illegal activities. But you seem to have that down pat."

People hold the door at ATMs and all kinds of places. I've been on both sides of the "hold the door dash", and yeah, I've wondered who am I letting in, and I've wondered appreciatively at the kindness of the people who have "held" for me. They were very nice, but they didn't know me from Adam.

Uhhh, it was an all women's dorm hall, so girls probably werent just holding the door open for him. Why would he give out his number to someone he raped? That is just too dumb for someone smart enough to sneak into an all women's dorm hall. He obviously raped and tried to murder that first woman, but Im not going to instantly think that he did the second one too. Something smells fishy.

He should still be in jail for life btw for what he did to the first woman.

I lived in an all girls dorm all through college...yeah...they will hold that door open. College students don't think of things like rapists and murderers in general. We are too busy believing we are immortal and things like that won't happen to us.

Also, I work in mental health now. You would be surprised at how sick and how intelligent someone can be at the same time. It can be pretty scary.

The thing with these key cards is you can just say "Hold the door please" and they will let you in. You could be holding a bunch of books and the kid with the card will easily let you in. Drop the books and off you go. That's a real problem in buildings with a need for security but no REAL security.

      wheel

one in bedroom... one close by...in living room. problem with a handgun if you wear glass's or its dark, which is likely, a shotgun works better, although admittedly we both have a CCP. the NEED for close combat is greatly reduced by my 90 lb golden retriever, by the time he shuts up and an intruder gets by ....he's toast....

Yeah hillbilly, pretty sure you can't keep loaded guns in dormitory. And call me crazy, but I don't especially want my daughter living next to the girl whose insane father thinks she needs loaded guns in area where there are a lot of folks through very thin walls.

Keep you daughters at home to live in your paranoia and quit endangering many other lives with you inanity. Guns aren't the answer to every problem, if they were, there would zero crime in the US with sheer numbers of guns we have. They make it worse, always have, always will.

Yep, in this case a gun would have posed extreme risk to everyone else in the building.

In this case a none lethal would have been perfect. Toss a few blinder cubes in his path and then hammer the dude with a nice baseball bat and keep screaming until he is no longer a threat or until someone comes. The blinders require a bit of training and practice, but he would have been unable to see well enough to pose much threat for up to 7 to 10 mins,

Maybe, they should also have a panic system installed in each room. That way security can be called quickly. Heck, you could even have the panic system set off by screaming for x number of seconds, just as a fail safe to being quickly restrained.

As to how he got by the security. I am betting that someone let him though at ea step. He probably "social engineered" someone into thinking he had a harmless reason to be there and so had that someone ( a student or other person with clearance ) open doors for him.

The more lethal methods of self defense would have been an unacceptable risk in a dorm, and they probably against the rules anyway.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Per FBI crime statistics, while the numbers of firearms in America has INCREASED, the incidence of violent crime has DECREASED.

Do you see the corollary evidence that firearms do in fact prevent crime? I can further assure you that a dead criminal is MUCH less likely to prove to be a recidivist problem.

The problem with this is (of course) that the Republican conservative machine would not consider this "legitimate rape".

I know that lots of folks are going to whine that this case should be politicized, but, when Akin and Ryan were (are) trying to redefine rape, this is what they are talking about.

In court, the defense with point to the fact that the second woman has no injuries and there for...

The message from the right is clear. Fight back and possible be not only raped but killed or maimed, or weigh your chances, and survive and be labeled a consenting participant by older religious men who some how know better.

We need a special lock up facility just for rapists and pedophiles. They DO NOT change, they CANNOT be rehabilitated, and they DO NOT deserve to be turned loose on the rest of society ever again.

We used to eliminate them but the useless Supreme Court says we can't do that any more, that brutal rape of women and children is not deserving of death.

So if we can't kill them, they need to be locked up for life.

Remember when rape was a CAPITAL crime? Death or life in prison? Nowadays it's just a stint in jail and you're free to rape again....

I thought the penalties for rape in most states were pretty strong now. Particularly in the instance where he stabbed the woman 25 times for Pete's sake! In California he'd get a heavy sentence and he'd have to serve at least 80% of the time, due to the violent nature of the offense, before he was eligible for parole. Not sure of the laws in D.C. You'd think they'd be fed up with all the crime there by now.

Christina, the penalty is steep in some jurisdictions. However, the prisons are filled to capacity, so you have judges with no alternative but to let the criminal plead down the charges or get a reduced sentence to make way for the repeat offenders and those who've committed even worse crimes. There are 2 million men in prisons across the U.S., with another 3 million on parole; none are choirboys and almost all will be back on the street at some point. Start holding their families responsible - financially and within the community - and watch some people either start using birth control or begin parenting their sons better.

You can't hold the families responsible for the actions of men. Kids, maybe, but not grown men.

How about we stop filling the jails with kids who were experiment with drugs?
Our criminal system has been outsourced to the private sector, and their best interest is making money, not keeping us safe.

This is why electing a "businessman" to be our President doesn't make a lot of sense to me. We know that Romney is good at and wants to make (more) money. There is nothing that says that he can or even really wants to make life any better for the rest of us.

This is the kind of person that should be listed as a sex offender, if he ever gets out of jail. Unfortunately there are so many men listed in Sex offender sites, even if he is listed, he could easily go unnoticed, and commit even more heinous acts. A good law badly applied is just as bad as any other bad law.

So why are the police sitting on so many rape kits from women who've been raped and gone to hospitals across the nation that have yet to be processed in order to potentially identify these Sh!tbags?

I have often wondered the same thing. Law enforcement says its lack of manpower to run the tests, but I think it's lack of motivation on the part of the powers that be in hopes these pain in the azz "womens" crimes will just go away.

                            Hi Folks,

This is where taxes, and reality come into the game. If you don't pay for the lab technicians time, they won't work for you. If you don't tax, you don't have money. Hence, Rape kits go un processed.

This is not "big government" this is a government that has the resources to do what it needs to do.

I agree with everything that you both have said. But in most cities, we don't even have enough cops on the street. We need to have a robust and responsive system that can respond. and that includes well funded and staffed labs.

So the next time some one talks about cutting programs to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, remember, this is what they are talking about.

Embarrassing as it is, the Republican vice presidential candidate believes, has said written and even video taped (and Romney agrees) things that suggest that he would not consider the second woman to be a victim of "legitimate rape".

Ask Akin and Paul Ryan. They are the self appointed judges on this issue.

Or maybe you should just look it up in the Republican party platform.

What ever, The woman certainly couldn't possibly be trusted to know that she'd been raped. She probably thought she'd was a victim of voter fraud, or something important to Republicans like that.

So let's ask Ryan and Akin. They Know. Romney may tell us after the elections, but his answer may vary from state to state and audience to audience so bring along the salt.

Everybody thinks that a rapist will be the victim of rape in prison. That ain't necessarily so. Depending on his connections, his safety may be assured. He may show up in prison and find half his old neighborhood there. He will go to the Joint and simply become a sexual predator there, exchanging one gender of victim for another. Just because you were a rapist on the street doesn't mean you will somehow be karmically treated to a dose of your own medicine one you enter the penal system. A wolf is a wolf, whether in the wild or a pen.

Yep, all those "fake" rape victims usually stab themselves 25 times before going to the police. The suspect in this case admits he forced his way in on both instances. It does not matter even if she led him to her dorm room, if she says no it means no. Get a clue and stop trying to blame the victim.

It is pretty sad that you are using that case of an obvious rape to air your dirty laundry. I won't write what your posts suggest you have or tried to, or would like to do. I'll just say that I think you are pathetic, and I hope you get professional help before you try and coax your targets into "having a little fun".

                                      Sick jerks.

Excuse me, but how did my post show any issues with black women, female college students, or that I have tried to rape anyone? Considering I am female myself, that's laughable. I was offended by Joe's post and, as I stated, was hoping he was going for sarcasm gone wrong instead of truly being serious.

I think you, maninjapan, have issue with reading comprehension.
