In wake of nor'easter, 'patience is the name of the game'

Those who lost their homes during Hurricane Sandy are salvaging what they can from the wreckage, and trying to stay afloat financially as they cope with the aftermath of the storm. NBC's Ann Curry reports.

Updated at 11:24 p.m. ET: BREEZY POINT, N.Y. -- After waking up to several inches of snow and more than 200,000 new power outages, residents in areas battered by Superstorm Sandy on Thursday got back to the long-term work of rebuilding.

Miranda Leitsinger

Snow dusted debris outside homes Thursday in Breezy Point, a community in the Rockaways section of New York City.

"Patience is the name of the game here," said Joseph Murray in Breezy Point, where snow from the nor’easter dusted the New York City community destroyed last week by flooding and a fire.

Families here on Thursday continued efforts to save their waterlogged homes from mold, with some piling items on the layer of snow in 40-degree weather.

New York City and Long Island will begin rationing gas to relieve frustration and long lines at the pump, NBCNewYork.com reported. The rationing does not apply to emergency vehicles, taxis or individual gas cans.

Murray, 27, was at his family’s home after sanitation workers cleared out their pile of garbage, leaving three salvageable nightstands and a lamp standing outside.

"Be patient with Mother Nature  because she doesn’t care about any of us," was how Murray rationalized the bizarre bouts of weather. "Let her do her thing and then when she’s ready to let you do your thing, she will."

Cleanup crews already overextended from Hurricane Sandy are working around the clock to clear snow that recently fell across the region, causing more people to lose power. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Murray did have an eye on Friday’s weather forecast, noting that "it’s going to be 60 degrees, this is all going to melt."

By late Thursday, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island had their power fully restored. New York and New Jersey saw a drop in the number of customers affected by the nor'easter. Now about 60,000 customers are without power between the two states because of the storm; more than half a million remain without power total in the two states, including outages caused by Sandy.

West Virginia, however, has struggled to bring power customers back online.

The overnight nor’easter boasted wind gusts of more than 50 mph and dropped heavy snow on already-weakened tree limbs, leading to new power outages.

In New Jersey alone, 167,000 homes and businesses lost power overnight, Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday. "This sets us back about a day" in terms of getting all power restored, he added.

"We're right back to the same situation," Kirk Walker of Hackensack, N.J., told NBCNewYork.com after power went out for the third time at his home since Sandy struck.

"They said it was gonna be a rough winter," Walker added. "Sign of things to come, I guess."

Officials there on Thursday said they had convinced the local utility to scrap its policy requiring that each home without power be inspected before power is restored, Newsday.com reported

With the new outages, some 700,000 customers were without power across the Northeast around midday. That number was reduced to some 600,000 by early evening.

Are you left in the lurch after Sandy?

Record snowfall totals were recorded across the area:

  • New York’s Central Park received 4.4 inches of snow on Wednesday -- a record for a Nov. 7 and the earliest 4-inch total in the park's history, NBCNewYork.com reported. By Thursday morning the total had reached 4.7 inches.
  • Newark, N.J., got 6 inches by Thursday -- more snow in 24 hours than during any previous November on record.
  • Bridgeport, Conn., received 3.5 inches of snow, beating the Nov. 7 record of 2 inches set in 1953.

Some areas inland got 12 to 13 inches of snow.

"This is a classic nor'easter," NBC meteorologist Al Roker said on TODAY, "just very early."

PhotoBlog: Hot meals on Staten Island

Conditions were still miserable Thursday morning. In New York City, winds were around 25 mph and it was 36 degrees with showers forecast before sunny skies on Friday.

In New Jersey, parts of which saw 9 inches of snow, police said ice and snow contributed to the deaths of two people in a car whose driver was speeding, NBCPhiladelphia reported.

Two people also died in Connecticut in traffic accidents attributed to snow, The Associated Press reported.

Full NBC coverage of Sandy's aftermath

Hundreds were evacuated ahead of the nor'easter, some because of flooding fears and others due to post-Sandy logistics.

John Makely / NBC News

Medeleine Dobriner was moved by the Red Cross to the Manresa Jesuit Center shelter on Staten Island so that her earlier shelter, a school, could reopen.

Medeleine Dobriner of New Dorp on Staten Island was among the latter -- having to move because her shelter was in a school that was reopening.

"This is my third shelter and usually change is good," Dobriner, 66, told NBC News, "but not in this case."

Throughout the region, people wore coats indoors as they endured yet another night without heat.

"I thought I was lucky when power was restored last Thursday, but last night it went out again," said Michael Platt, an electrician from Toms River, N.J., who estimated a foot of snow fell in his area. "The kids have been home for nearly two weeks and I'm not working, and when I'm not working I'm not making any money. This hasn't been easy."

"Can you believe this? Enough is enough," added Cindy Casey, whose Belle Harbor home one block from the beach in the Rockaways was swamped by Sandy, as she looked out at the snow blanketing the neighborhood devastated by flooding and fire.

Some of those who had weathered Sandy told NBCNewYork.com they felt like a cruel joke was being played on them.

"Kind of laughing about it at this point," said Danny Arnedos, of Oyster Bay, Long Island. "To go from a hurricane to a nor'easter and driving in the snow in 10 days is pretty unbelievable."

"I am waiting for the locusts and pestilence next," New Jersey Gov. Christie said Wednesday.

Coastal flooding proved minimal, but commuter bus and train services were disrupted by the storm, with the Long Island Rail Road briefly shutting down all operations to the city's eastern suburbs on Wednesday night.

Gasoline remained in short supply in the New York City area, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday announced rationing based on odd and even number license plates.

Official: NY disaster chief fired over tree removal

Airports saw 1,600 canceled flights on Wednesday due to the storm. Some 600 more flights were scratched Thursday, according to the flight tracking service FlightAware. The majority of those are in the New York area.

The losses from Superstorm Sandy are still rough, but New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday he had seen a report estimating $50 billion in damage and economic losses across the region, with $33 billion in New York state.

"That's a staggering number," he said.

Where else in the world can someone experience a hurricane, and then a snowstorm the next week?

I bet they are thinking there may be some truth to the "End of the world is near" right about now.

Makes you wonder what comes next... An Earthquake or Tsunami?

Jesus described
this sixth sign in the Olivet Prophecy.
"And there will be signs in the sun, in
the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with
perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them from fear
and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the
powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming
in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen,
look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption [rescue] draws
near"

(Luke 21:25-28).

Consequently,
near the end of the 31/2-years of Satan's wrath, God will intervene, first with
signs and wonders in the heavens, then by orchestrating His final punishments
before Jesus Christ's return.

The seventh and final
seal

Finally the
seventh seal is opened
(Revelation 8). It describes seven other aspects of
end-time events, each announced with a trumpet blast. In the first four of
these, plagues God strikes the earth and mankind's environmental support
systems. The fifth trumpet's plague inflicts great pain on those refusing to
serve God. In the sixth trumpet plague, God permits an unimaginably destructive
and all-out worldwide war to begin
(Revelation 8-9).

I think the Northeast sets the Guinness record for truly strange and bizarre weather, with a blizzard just a few days after a hurricane . . .

No place on this planet can beat that, really . . .

Really! :-o

I had to drive home in this last night through CT and MA, and it was one of the more dangerous of my 30 years in the Northeast. My commute is normally about a hour, and last night it took over 3 hours. There were cars and tractor trailers stuck all over the highway. Plows just couldn't keep up with it to clear the roads for the evening commute.

Just awful. My thoughts go out to those that are still without power from the hurricane and are now dealing with this.

I always marvel at the bible thumpers. A book, written and edited by men (not women) down through the ages. If there really was a book from their god, why did it take thousands of years and multiple rewrites to get it to where we are today? Better yet, if this bile is the word of their god, why did they feel the need to recently remove the word "Booty" from this holy book? I have a prediction; Global Warming is going to make NYC a bad place to live going forward.

I am a "Republican leaning" conservative. Those of you with similar political ideology slamming the President are only spewing your "hatred" and degrading. Time to pack it in and start looking out for your fellow man; we got work to do. Those "on the left" please be considerate, quell your enthusiasm, take a breath of air, help us to settle down. We need to start pulling together! It's still America, not us and them.

As someone living here in Ocean County NJ I have to say, we're a bit weary of it all. Many of my friends only just had their power turned on Tuesday only to have lost it again last night. It's COLD here. Schools have been closed for weeks. People haven't been able to work, so they aren't getting paid. There are hundreds of people living in temporary shelters because they can't return home and have nowhere else to go. The ASPCA is going home to home rescuing animals that had to be left behind. No one expected that Sandy would have been as bad as it was. NJ is RARELY given a direct hit by a hurricane, and they are NEVER this bad. These are not just vacation homes. People live here year round. Those who live here in the area are not "Rich". They are working class people.

This just sucks that this second storm had to come through so quickly. It's only complicating the power situation. It's really very bad here, like living in a war zone.

Look I get it that the election is big national news. And I understand that Republicans are bitterly disappointed. But one thing that we've discovered here locally is that when the crap hits the fan it doesn't matter if your Democratic or Republican, we're all Americans. We're all in this together. And we all have to work together to get it done. Please don't politicize a natural disaster like this. It only mocks the very real pain being felt by both Republicans and Democrats alike.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday fired his chief of emergency management Steven Kuhr. The action came after Cuomo received information that Kuhr, who reportedly made $153,000 a year, diverted an emergency-response crew to his Long Island home to remove a tree from the driveway.

People, had you heard the saying (quoted by a former fbi agent) "The scum had risen it's way to the top"? This saying is in regards to the "evil bastards" who had risen their way to the top in high positions within the government. Fortunately this scum was skimmed er fired.

Try losing your power where it actually gets cold.. 40 degrees is shorts weather, and if it is above zero outside, it isn't even cold, especially inside where the air isn't blowing around. A couple layers of clothes and some warm underwear and you can be almost as comfortable as if it were 65.. And warm blankets and a companion in bed can be so much more fun when it is chilly like that. Just wait until it gets below zero outside and after a couple days your pipes start bursting from freezing and you can see your breath inside your house. There is a HUGE difference between chilly and cold.

We are slated for 8 inches tomorrow around here (Montana), and unless it hits -40 and 48 inches of snow in 24 hours, not even the schools will close. But then again this is why you see the middle of the U.S. map all in red and not in blue.. we know how to take care of ourselves.

At least Seattle has an excuse when it snows to shut the city down.. with all the hills you can't get anywhere. When you get into the big cities on the east coast where people have relied on the infrastructure to take care of their every need for generations, a couple weeks of living like humans did for hundreds of thousands of years is a disaster. End of the world MUST be near if you don't have power for 2 weeks..

I am sure someone will blame the cold weather on global warming again..

I feel for those who are suffering, I really do, but like almost every welfare case in the U.S., your inability to prepare yourself for life is the cause of your suffering.

Dave, it turns out that red states make up more than 65% of welfare recipients. Second, global warming causes climate change which can cause very unstable and unpredicatable weather. The northeast generally doesn't see snow until mid december. This is climate change at work. Also, you have never been in 20 degree weather with 80% humidity. When the air is immensely wet, the cold air can draw heat out of your body at 12 times the normal rate. Dry cold is easy. It's YOU who has no idea just how bad it can get in the northeast. Montana has it easy.

With all the news of Sandy's forth coming strike before it hit, one would have though people remembered Katrina. But still there were huge gasoline lines afterwards. Why are we so quick to forget the lessons of the recent past? With the struggles these past two years of recession and down turn in jobs, housing and finances, one would have thought people would have started putting somethings away for a rainy day. Well, it has come at last.

We have been like children playing in the sunny summer days, while the harvest sat waiting to be brought into the barns. Time to separate the wheat from the tares. To see who has been wise and foolish.

We can spout all we want about those in government doing their jobs, but have we done ours taking responsibility for ourselves against the time of need? Don't forget to check on your neighbors. This is the American spirit-uniting together to overcome our common adversary, whatever that may be.Hope's a bright fire lighting the darkest days helping guide one on their way.May yours shine brightly always.

Patrick93 - show your proof that red states have more welfare. About global warming - Al Gore has become a billionaire off of global warming and bought a house on the beach in California. The same coast he claims will be under water. He spends more money heating and maintaining his houses (that he doesn't live in full time) in one month than we'll spend in 10 years.

Why doesn't Al turn in all his gas guzzling planes and SUVs and donate all his billions to stop global warming? Afte all he expects us to. He has requested we not drive of fly as much to save the earth and wants us to pay carbon taxes to save the earth but he is the biggest hypercritic of them all. I wonder who many off shore bank accounts he has to hide his wealth to avoid paying taxes.

Dave - I lived in Vermont for 5 years where it got so cold your snot froze and the air would get sucked out of your chest the moment you walked outside, so I'm very familiar with the difference between cold and chilly. As someone else mentioned it is cold AND wet here. And it's not in the 40's. Last night the low at my apartment was 29. The difference is in what's expected for a region. Many homes here have wood stoves or fireplaces, but not all do. I was able to heat my apartment last night by boiling water on my gas stove top. We managed, but it is still a hard blow. I honestly don't understand your mindset. What do you expect us to do? Shimmy up the poles and restore the power ourselves? We're doing the best we can. EVERYONE here who has power has opened up their homes to those who do not. I have donated all my extra blankets and winter coats to shelters. I've made hot meals, offered hot showers and let people just stay and warm up, charge their phones or whatever they needed. The shelter I was volunteering at just closed this morning because THEY lost power last night. I'd love to see how you all deal in Montana when a tornado rips through a neighborhood and hundreds of people in your town are left homeless suddenly. I suspect you'd react the same way we are, taking care of one another and rebuilding what was lost. Fema comes out to Montana when y'all have a disaster too. I didn't see anyone turning them away in 2011 when the rivers flooded there.

And just so you all know, New Jersey has a fairly popular Republican governor, Chris Christie. Its Congressional delegation is evenly split, with six Democrats and six Republicans. Moreover, New Jersey is the fourth most affluent state in the nation, with a median household income of $63,540. New Jersey voters also come overwhelmingly from Republican-friendly territory: the suburbs. The area hardest hit during these storms, Ocean, Monmouth and Cape May counties reliably vote republican every election. If Republicans were smart they would view NJ as an opportunity rather than writing us off.

Strengthen the Republican districts in Blue states and you may turn them purple. EVERY state should be viewed as a swing state starting right now. You have 4 years to convince as many people as possible that you are not cold hearted blow hards but concerned with the welfare of the people you hope to govern. If you want to make a point that we don't need government because people can help each other voluntarily, then make a visible effort to help instead of criticizing those who have suffered a disaster. Point out the grass roots organizing that is going on, the neighbors helping neighbors. We're not relying on the government here, but we are thrilled that our REPUBLICAN governor has been doing a stellar job at getting us the help that we need right now.

Gracie, I lived in alaska for 6 years. -55. The mountains of Colorado are easy except for driving on icy downhill roads. Also, Al Gore pays double in taxes what romney does for earning nearly the same (but still less) the amount of money. Also, he does not heat his homes year round. No idiot does that. Also, his private jet is the most fuel efficient model currently being sold, so he is not a hypocrite.

RB in post 1.2 wrote a whole bunch of stone and bronze age based fecal matter from a urine soaked poor work of LSD tripping fiction. A Superman/Supergirl comic book is closer to reality and morality than in your holy book of bovine fecal matter.

I hope the people in this area know that the media is hardly reporting this. Remember when Katrina was on TV 24/7? Not so with Hurricane Sandy and this new storm. These new storms are just as bad as Katrina. The media can't make certain people look bad though.

Watch out for new calamities to hit America because we are accepting immoral things.

Jo-ann - It's not as bad as Katrina. It's sad, and many people have lost their homes. But unlike what happened in NOLA - Most of the barrier islands did evacuate, so the loss of life was a fraction of what they saw. And for the most part, instead of looting and killing each other over a flat screen TV we're helping each other get what we need. Those who have little are giving what they can to those who have less. And we have a Governor who is clearly in charge and doing a phenomenal job at organizing the state and federal response. So I'm not surprised that the national media isn't covering it. It's a positive story of how people can come together and care for each other when it's needed. It doesn't serve the media's goal of fostering divisiveness and enmity among the people.

Hey, northeastern states: Ever think this could be a sign from God and he is trying to clean up the mess you created. You only need to look at the TV program Jersey Shore for proof. What a bunch of sluts and low-lifes making over $250,000 for being the way they are.

Just pretend its the 1600s or 1700s again, well before there ever was electrical power. Make a fire, and have fun. Kill a few of those dog-size rats you are famous for for food.

Actually, Skippy, I am not that religious. I am less of a believer now that there is a God now that Obama got re-elected by the likes of the idiots of California. Hell, I even prayed for Romney to win! It was that important. Just wait until our national debt is $24 trillion by the end of Obama's second, sorry-assed, term. He will not reduce the debt because he will have to eliminate social programs to do it. He and the Democrats will not do that. They will just spend more and try to tax more. They will create more expensive entitlement programs as they go along because that will get them more votes. The Republicans will never win another Presidential election again until the US goes bankrupt. The US is now an entitlement society and there is no longer any hope, in my opinion. Just wait until the Chinese demand payment for the US debt that they own.

Hey, just a thought: Was there security at the Giants / Pittsburgh football game on Sunday? Don't you think that security team would have been better used helping the people of New York impacted by the storm? They cancelled the Marathon, which would have brought many millions of dollars to the city, but not the stupid football game? What the hell? How hypocritical.

        @ Xtina The Awesome,

There have been looting and there are plenty of angry people but the media has not reported on it. If it wasn't for the internet the folks in the rest of the country would have never heard of the anger and the looting.

One lady cussed at the Mayor of New York. I was shocked but I understand her anger.

The Governors of NY and NJ have been fantastic from what I can tell.

Too bad the Governor of Louisiana and the Mayor of New Orleans were horrible during Katrina. If the Mayor of New Orleans would have done his job properly the outcome would have been so much better. Sadly all the blame was put on Bush and people who did the blaming back then didn't understand how the government works.

I seriously do not get the whole North vs. South thing you are going on about. I have no problem with the South. Probably, I have more of a problem with fellow New Yorkers who think they are the center of the world. It is the 3rd largest city in the world, and not only creates revenue for the rest of New York state, but a lot of the 'red' states as well. That doesn't give anyone license to be a jerk, though.

Everybody likes to be proud of where they come from. The 'Yankees' are a baseball team and it is pretty common to like being called one around here. If you are from the South, I'd imagine you have something to be proud of too. But the civil war ended a long time ago. Except for people who have backward thinking, whether they are yanks or southerners. I can tell you this...go to the tribal area in Pakistan and if you meet Al Quaeda, they'll kidnap or kill you no matter what part of the US you are from. Does that make you feel better?

@Creekdog: I saw some FPL trucks up here helping local utilities fix things. They don't seem to have any problems working together, you know, those southern and northern utilites. Hmmmn....maybe some hype is involved here?

I guess you have to go to FOX to get the real story here. For some reason, and I'm sure it's just an oversight, there was no mention of FEMA abandoning Staten Island and shutting down the temporary shelters prior to the snow storm. Obama's government at work again. Might have changed the election if it had happened before the election. But, then again, Obama's supporters only read or watch the DNC PR machine.

Pfft, there are plenty of southerners in the New York area. Don't think a left leaning media outlet represents the entirety of either the left, New York, or anything other than the people writing. Remember, it is THEM who want you to think they are bigger than they really are.

Dumb *sses from New York, and from anywhere, really, do stupid things like make fun of other places that they aren't. You know, if your stupid and you want to use the excuse that New York is the next best thing since sliced bread, a person will make fun of New Jersey, 'upstaters' (meaning the not New York City part of New York), Staten Island, country folk....all that serves to do is point out how stupid the person talking is. And that they haven't probably left their little 4 block area of the city except in a cab or a subway.

Anyway, off topic getting deleted? Hahaha! Msnbc is the home of off topic....

Where else in the world can someone experience a hurricane, and then a snowstorm the next week?

A: New England. This weather is nothing new to us. It's interesting to note how quickly it was forgotten how, at this time last year, Hurricane Irene and a blizzard all within a week caused billions in damage in Connecticut and many of us spent more than a week without power/heat after the blizzard as crews cleaned up the trees that broke apart under the weight of the snow on the leaves. Not that I'm bragging.

I think the only other region in the lower 48 that probably has worse weather than New England has to be the Great Lakes area-- they get some nasty winter storms that I'd be happy if they would keep to themselves. :-)

I guess they don't call it New England for nothing. From what I have read, Old England has some pretty nasty weather as well. Hence the old stereotype of the Englishman with the London Times under one arm and his trusty umbrella under the other. It seems it rains pretty much continuously in England.

Be careful what you wish for. Some scientists say that when the Big one occurs out here. It will trigger places like Mammoth and Cascadia. Which have currently inactive Volcano's. If they go the cloud of dust and ash will first take out the western part of the USA. Then head east to the rest of the Country. At least I wont know what hit me. The rest of my fellow Americans will suffer slow.

Hopefully even with the snow NY and NJ will look out for each other even more. Human life matters most. Hang in there East Coast. Dry Newspaper or any paper if you can get it. Helps insulate between your cloths. Clean water can be found in water heaters. And share tips with those around you.

UKA--I know you meant to be sarcastic, but you are exactly right. In 1968 I was visiting in Mexico City, and astounded at how over populated (and with so many desperately poor people) it was, and my friend (who lived there) said 'the poor in the country side honestly believe if they JUST move to Mexico City, the streets are paved with gold and they will get rich'. Now, that was 45 years ago, and the problems in Mexico City has increased exponetially with its increase in overpopulation by poor people, who, well, OVERPOPULATE.

New York, New Jersey and the surrounding regions are ALSO overpopulated. And the worst hit by storms like this are the people you see on the news who "have nothing, no food, no electricity" etc, because they were already living 'hand to mouth' BEFORE Sandy hit. And to a greater or lesser extent, EVERY City in the US faces their own "Sandy", be it electrical 'brown-outs', water shortages (or it's reverse, water EXCESSES, ie, floods) food poisoning, bridge collapses, forest fires, tornadoes, earth quakes, extreme heat, etc., ALL of which are made worse by over crowding.

The last thing in the WORLD we need to be doing is admitting 1 million LEGAL new immigrants each year (a great many of whom are DIRT poor, with little education, little to no English, and little to no job skills. (Much less the ILLEGAL ones)

When eveyone yammers about the percentage of the US's "money" is in the hands of the '1%' they seem to forget that ONE reason why that is is that the bottom 50% is increasing so much faster in population because they have too many CHILDREN they cannot afford, who 15 years later have so many children THEY cannot afford, etc.

And until poor people realize that THAT is one of the biggest reasons they are STUCK in poverty, things will get worse, here, just as they are in countries abroad where THEIR population is also running amok with too many babies.

Meanwhile, the US is NOT the 'welfare state' of the whole world, and we cannot continue our current course of immigration, much LESS increase it, without adversely affecting ALL American citizens.

Jersey girl--absolutely, politics should not have ANYTHING to do with the recovery.

RIGHT UP until those affected ask the GOVERNMENT to do what it seems to do WORST, which is co-ordinate ANYTHING. I live in MO, and we routinely get floods, (and this year, drought) tornados, and severe blizzards, and the FEDS are almost NEVER much help, other than providing low interest loans for rebuilds. And even at that, the smartest thing the feds have done HERE is to tell people who ROUTINELY get flooded out that they either have to BUILD higher and better, or move away from the 'danger territory' or NOT get any federal money NEXT time.

And that is what NEEDS to happen to many of the places that were devastated by Sandy. Like it or not, natural or man made, Global warming is HERE. And every big city that is in a DANGER area needs to STOP all building in those affected areas, or at the very least, institute new building codes that require better construction aimed at lessening the damage. Check out what has been done in New Orleans, or in FL in general, on buildings in flood prone areas--they homes are built up on concrete pillars that keep the living area of the house ABOVE most flood damage.

But PS--that regulation NEEDS to come at the state level, NOT the federal.

Or perhaps you are of the selfless individuals who has put aside the misery you are suffering and ventured out at all costs to find a way to post messages on the internet to get the word out to the rest of the world about how bad things are in your area and how you are all suffering. I live in Longport, NJ which is on a barrier island between Sea Isle (where Sandy made landfall) and Atlantic City. My basement flooded with 7 feet of water. I lost electricity, heater, hot water, freezer and washer/dryer. I have a backup generator which supplied power to the refrigerator, sump pump, a couple of lights and a radio. My only connection to the outside world was the radio and my cell phone which only worked about 10% of the time. The first responders, government agencies and non-government organizations were fantastic. Every one of my elected officials the Republican Mayor and Councilmen, the Democrat county Freeholders and Sheriff, the Republican Governor and the Democrat President all did a great job and worked together seamlessly. Their party didn't matter; their only concern was the people. In the past week my community has gone from complete devastation to business as usual. Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done but the worst of it is over. The government helped the people not with a hand out but a hand up. It really made me proud to be an American.

On the radio last week I heard that Rush Limbaugh and Fox News criticized Governor Christie for complimenting President Obama on the job he had done. How dare they. They were so intent on destroying Obama that they would jeopardize the life and well-being of my family, friends and neighbors just to see Obama fail. After this past week, it is so clear how much this country can achieve when we work together. Now that "we the people" have chosen Obama as the President can we please turn off the Rush Limbaughs and Fox News that always put party before country. Can we silence the divisive Tea Party whose motto seems to be "my way or the highway". This great country can accomplish anything if we work together. This past week is proof of it.

Sympathy and support to you Michael, so awful what you and your neighbors no doubt are enduring. We donated to Red Cross immediately, I'm going to again. San Diego sent crews to help, along with the many other communities that have thankfully sent people too. Let's hope that by Thanksgiving the majority of East Coasters have power, shelter, and this can be fixed. Geez, what a mess.

Jersey Michael - I feel for you and your neighbors and wish you the best but how on earth did Rush or Hannity jeopardize you well being by bashing Obama? They are talk show host and have no power over what Fema or Obama can do.

Maybe he'd like others to not criticize, and marginalize, the services to his desperate area. Faux News is full of media whores who make millions in income by spreading disinformation.

Could it be that this is the fault of one George Bush. Before long America will be begging for Bush times. This nark we elected will end America if we the people permit it. Christians need to be Christian not in name only but in deed and get America back. God can do the impossible even with our president. After all he made him in his own image.

It was only a supposed to be a photo op and not intended to anything more. Bet you haven't heard from that guy since and I sure you won't see him again. All he would say anyway is first we have to investigate why FEMA failed again and then we have to convene a study group and then we won't do what they recommend.

Has anyone seen a report on who leaked the information on the Navy Seals? How about the report on the Libyan murders? This one seems like a no brainer to me, just ask the survivors what happened. Man how long does that take?

Has a one of you ever read what you're saying and thought that it didn't sound ignorant and hateful? You guys really are the entire reason that people in other countries want to kill us! Hell, most Americans want to kill one another because of people like you guys. Seriously, listen to yourselves and then still stay amazed that this country is in the shape it's in.

Reaper - I have to agree with you. I tend to stay out of political discussions for obvious reasons; I am a registered republican. Yes, I know all of you ignorant haters probably think that because of my race, age, and gender that I must be one of the defamed 47%. But I'm not.

I do, however, find it increasingly difficult to join ranks with those who spew so much hatred and hold so many ignorant views based on prejudice and the hyperbolic rantings of hyper-partisan "pundits" such as Rush, Sean, Glen, etc.

The truth? It was only an election. Romney was a poor candidate and he lost. Though I philosophically disagree with some of Mr. Obama's positions, I am mature and intelligent enough to know he is not a socialist, not the antichrist, not a Muslim, or any of the other labels he is assigned. God is not punishing the northeast for the election and the country will not fail as the result of Tuesday's outcome.

To all those haters: grow up, stop the name calling, and do your part to make this country better. Spewing your bile in places like this does nothing to improve our lot.

Actually, the antichrist is supposed to bring the golden age of the world for a brief time before turning it into a police state, and this would be worldwide, under 1 ruler. We are nowhere close people. The antichrist is at least 300 years off. See you all after christmas 2012, cause we will still be here.

What tax cuts are the 47% gonna be missing, pray tell? Now, if you take away Fed tax individual exemptions, and child tax credits on the working poor, sure, they'll feel it. Not going to happen - unless there is total breakdown of the WORLD wide economy.
Now the higher earniers, sure, we may get a pinch. And the Social Security tax that is limited to being taken out on like the first $105k or so of one's income - will likely be raised. But like my dad used to say, half a pie is better than no pie at all - he's probably in the top 3% of retirees, lives off his interest. Sometimes you just have to suck it up for the greater good. Can't take it with you, after all.

We've got a hotel full of non-union utility workers right here, right now - well, actually, at the moment, they're all out working their @sses off to help restore power to those in need, and we're very thankful to them for their help. Stop repeating a rumor started by some low-life troublemaker - it was debunked within hours of hitting the internet; no non-union workers were turned away.

Wow you right wingers can't stay on point. You bitch that all the rich democrats like Buffet, Gates and the Hollywood elite are pumping money into Obamas campaign and the thousands of rich democrats paying 50K a plate at fund raisers then say democrats are all handouters. The truth is most democrats pay taxes and do what we believe is best for the country rather than what's best for us. Would we like to have a 20% tax cut and keep Bush's? Of course. But we realise that Romney's promise to cut the deficit while cutting 5 trillion in revenue and increasing military by 200 billion was a lie to get elected just like Bush lied. Bush promised to pay down our debt in half while cutting taxes. How'd he do? Quit bitching because you didn't get your free money from Romney, suck it up and think of the entire country for a change. Obama didn't get elected on buying votes he got elected on promising to raise taxes. He knows most Americans can't be bought. Sorry yours is for sale.

Yes, George W did such a wonderful job helping out the folks of Katrina....was that in New England? Oh wait....

Clearly this has nothing to do with politics but you "loving Chirstian" folks will keep maing it about that....

if i remember right after katrina hit fema was confused on what to do. it's not the potus fault it tkes a little time to assess the situation and to act rather its bush or dumbo in the office. the states should be in charge since they are or should be familiar with there peoples needs. in another wayof thinking what do peope expect when you live by the big sea water hee hee you need to be prepared and not rely on our failing gov

Playhard--the fact is, Katrina was no more Bush the idiot's fault than Sandy was Obama's. What PARTISANs don't get is that the FEDERAL government is REALLY LOUSY at dealing with disasters, be they natural or man made.

And the main difference between Katrina and Sandy is that more poverty stricken people were hit by Katrina, and take a look at New Orleans today--many of those people were SHIPPED away and dumped on OTHER states. And many have never come back.

Depending on the federal GOVERNMENT to 'fix it' is futile. Deifying ONE president while defiling another for similar results is stupid.

There are no similar results, and Obama had Fema in action, taking estimates, and preparing before the storm even hit. GWB didn't deploy Fema even for estimation until several days after Katrina blew through. You are comparing apples to oranges here. Obama did better, but Fema has historically never dealt with snow. That job usually falls to the states except in cases of massive blizzards the likes of which we may see again this year according to the national almanac.

Really Patrick? How do you take estimates of something that hasn't occured yet? FEMA has dealt with snow before. Upstate NY - surprise October storm - snow, flooding destruction - FEMA was there and quite quickly I might add. Oh my gosh we can't include that - it was on Bush's watch.

God is mad? Us polluting the Earth is the cause of this extreme weather but conservatives do not want to admit that pollution and the like is the cause- its much more convenient to take no responsibility and blame those damn gays. Even though science and facts support this weather change being our fault, its just easier to say God is mad. Looks like extreme weather like this will be the norm from now on but its because God is mad right? Not that we continue pumping tons and tons of pollutants into the air, sea, and land- no its because God is showing his anger towards us for electing Obama. Ridiculous. At least you Conservatives are finally admitting there is a problem with the weather- to bad you choose to to ignore the reason why...

Wow, surprised it took that long to get in the obligatory global warming mention! Surely, there have never been hurricanes or blizzards in the past, and definitely not this close together. I mean, this is unprecendented in the billions of years of Earth's history!

gw716, Yes, actually. New Jersey hasn't seen snow outside the Pocono mountains in early November, ever, since the founding of the U.S.. Just a little fact check for you. Global warming causes climate change which causes unstable and rapidly changing weather patterns. And hurricanes have gotten larger and faster. There didn't used to be a category 5, and now there's a category 6 in place. YES, WEATHER IS GETTING A TON WORSE YOU IGNORAMOUS!

You "so-called religious Christians" are really disgusting with all the HATE you spew. I'm sure God would very very proud of way you treat your fellow brothers and sisters. Doesn't the Bible preach to those everyone? You should all really be ashamed of yourself for using a natural disaster as a way to preach your hate message & dissatifaction with the election results. I'm sure Jesus would be proud of you all.

Blaming the president for a hurricane and a blizzard you folks really aren't very bright. So I suppose Katrina and Joplin and Isaac and.... should I go on....were Obama's fault as well? Get over it and be good "Christians" (and I use that term very loosely with many of you) and help you fellow man.

Where did the votes come from? How did he get elected when every discussion before and after the election would indicate that the majority of people would not be voting for him? Maybe I am looking too early in the day and most of his supporters are still in bed.

In reality, 47% of America is not filled with non-working, lazy scum. Those 47% romney slandered are mostly hard workers who need a little extra help because his and Bush's policies destroyed the worth of the dollar and set the economy into crash mode. Get a clue.

A working family with 3 kids, due to the individual exemptions allowed on Fed Income Tax ($5k write-off in this case), and other potential exemptions like for mortgage, child care credit, etc. - will not have to pay FEDERAL tax. BUT they are paying plenty of tax - consumption based like gasoline, state, property, auto - they are part of the 47%. Then there are lower income seniors - they are not working, have some exemptions on their tax return, but they pay other than FED taxes as well. In fact, unless they are living under a bridge and off the grid, most everyone pays SOME tax on something they consume - just too poor for FED taxable income.

We are dealing with the same crap here in Illinois except it's Chicago. A lot of people wish Chicago would become it's own state and leave our stuff alone!!! They drain the life out of the state and in turn have one of the country's highest crime rate and lowest educational levels!!! Wish Obummer and Emmanuel would just fall off the face of the earth. Might make things a bit easier for us down here.

I am glad they have (cracker jack point men) like Mayor (16 oz.) Doomberg and Gov. Chrisby Creme on the scene, doing the the heavy lifting for them.

Makes you wonder about the Union turning away out of state non-union electrical workers assistance.

Maybe the Boss and Jay-Z can stumble through a ballard and a rap to help out the cause.

P.S. - Gov. Christy you were pitiful weeping over the phone call and the wet kiss. (Fraud)

that b.s. about lineman being turned away was a huge lie perpetrated by baggers to scare us into voting for them...hahhahaha...how did that work out for ya? You douchebaggers are ridiculous, and your crap spewing never stops does it, even after you took an extreme beating at the polls..sigh...Missouri and Alabama got hit with devastating storms and tornadoes, both states lean way right...how do you religious freaks, harping about biblical retribution, explain that...don't tell us...we really don't want your version, because it is really nutty!

My hart goes out tto the people. But they were turned away, where was our great community organizer working with all sides to resolve a problem? He got his photo op and went away. Did the liberal media say anything? Obama won this election because of the media. If they want to turn away non union crews then they have a problem. Let them deal with it. Let Obama keep them warm and fuzzy.

Except that no nonunion workers were ever turned away. It was another blatant lie perpetrated by Sean Hannity and FAUX.

The union workers' paperwork took extra time to process - they were NOT turned away.
It is really a shame how the Faux News twists the minds of some of their watchers. Pathetic.

No, it started out that way until they got caught at doing it...then they started the backfilling and spinning.
