Mail carrier walks by dead man, thinking he's a mannequin

The U.S. Postal Service is defending a mail carrier who stepped around a Denver man who collapsed and died near his front door.

Dale Porch was dropped off at home last week after working the night shift for the Regional Transportation District but never made it inside. Family members say hours later, a mail carrier walked by the body to deliver the mail but did nothing to help.

KMGH-TV reports the carrier has been temporarily taken off the route. The family says the carrier told them he thought the body was a mannequin, a decoration left over from Halloween.

A Postal Service spokesman called it an unfortunate situation that probably would not have happened any other time of the year, reported the Associated Press.

An autopsy report is pending.

That would have to be one VERY realistic-looking mannequin. Halloween decorations usually aren't that detailed.

sounds like the meter maids that ticketed a car for expired meter downtown san diego , then had it towed not until a missing person report filed and a license plate search reveal the car in impound when detectives went to investigate the car to see if any clues were inside car . they opened drivers door and the missing person fell out dead.. the car was in impound for 4 days the body dead for 5 days...oh and there was NO tinting on the windows...

With the budget cuts at the P.O., that wasn't in his job description. (Sorry; this is the kind of post I usually ignore.)

I get this guys family are grieving, but griping that a mail carrier "didnt notice" doesnt seem to make much sense. It sucks that he died, but that isnt this mail carriers fault - and noticing him wouldnt have brought him back to life.

just a sad situation all around, it'd suck to be the mail carrier and have this be made into an issue it just shouldnt be.

For all we know, the reason he didnt notice really was because he was that focused on doing his actual job.

The least this mail carrier could have done would be to kick the man in the face to see if he moved. What a dumbed down governmental attitude..........

If you have never worked for the Post Office, you have no idea the pressure these people are under to deliver the damn mail; so yes he was focused on his job, so customers won't complain that their mail was late. People always look for someone to blame, when there is no blame to be had. To the family sorr for your lost, but it is not the fault of the postal worker.

I don't fault the mail carrier. I am sure he'd have called 911 if he even thought it was real. Also here our mail carriers are timed and must finish that route in a given time frame. Considering it was Halloween I can certainly understand how he thought it was a mannequin.

How did this mans family not suspect something was awry prior to the mail carrier having seen this body? Who dropped him off, and were there any medical conditions , is this an age related death ? Too many missing portions of the story ... Poor news article and terrible coverage by the author and the press person(s) involved in bringing the story to light... Details are necessary, without them the story should not have been posted... This is considered 'shock value' oriented news... Vague circumstances beset around a relatively minor incident that MIGHT get people talking on newsvine... Good job NBCnews. You media WHORES.

It wasn't a term of insult aimed at prostitutes, rather, any form of whore , be it corporation or association, public entity or otherwise. The term 'whore' itself should be viewed negatively, since anyone or any thing that would step over its own ideals to propagate monetary or non-specific gain is generally viewed in a negative light. Hope that cleared things up =)

how real does something have to look clumped up on a sidewalk. He was just doing his job going from house to house and I do believe that he thought more of Halloween than he did anything else.

I recall once we found a guy unconscious on a bench. People totally ignored him and acted like he didn't exist. My sister and I were just kids. We tried to tell an authority figure who basically said it was a dummy in a bush but we knew it was a real guy. We finally called 911 and it was good we did. The guy was a diabetic who'd gone into diabetic shock and passed out.

It happens, it's just an accident and I can understand grieving, but don't blame the guy for not taking it seriously.

US Postal workers are actually paid pretty well. Most government workers are paid a pretty good wage I believe, its not their money so why do they care? I'm not saying that all of them do a good job im just saying that they get paid pretty well for not really being on their game.

For all those attaching the Postal Workers you should be ashamed. They do earn their money - they work hard and in all kinds of weather. Are there individuals in ever industry that don't give their all - certainly.

For those taking a cheap shot at the Administration - I wouldn't point fingers - look at your poster boy (Karl Rove and how he just waisted over $400 million and lied to his investors about this past election cycle) I would be in hiding if I were him.

why are the exempt from being "just as inept" when we know from the last two wars lots of money was misspent or just given away or just plain lost.

I love the folks that deride the govt so much and always fail to see that their party doesnt do much to make any of those things better...because thats what smart bitchers do, just bitch and then do nothing.

I don't work for the USPS but I work "with" them a lot. In 12 years I've shipped and mailed all kinds of literature, business mail, and all kinds of products/items and in that time I have only had to file 3-4 claims for lost or damaged items. I was always reimbursed for the items very quickly. The people who have the most problems with the USPS are usually crabby and treat service people poorly in general. Now UPS, that's another story. What can brown do for you....? Not much.

Yes, they do get paid "pretty well" but they also get shipped all over the place to work. You may be able to work in the town where you live but if they need you in another city, you are expected to commute or move, no matter how far away it is. And you don't get time to make other arrangements or miss work. Most post offices are under-staffed and overworked, and now the holidays are upon us....give 'em a break!

OK. OK. The man's own family hadn't even figured out he was dead, and we're blaming the letter carrier? Yeah, that makes sense. What about the people who dropped him off from work? They must have blown out of there pretty quickly after dropping him off if he never even made it inside. Also, the guy was dead. What's the letter carrier going to do to "help"? Break out a shovel and start digging?

No one said anything about "blaming the letter carrier". He wasn't fired, and there were not criminal charges filed against him. How do you extrapolate all that from the article saying he was "temporarily taken off the route"?

Shame on them for not watching and making sure the adult was capable of getting from the curb to his front door without keeling over. Argue - why would a mail carrier knock on a door?

they put the mail in the boxes where I live - and quickly move on to the next house.

Also, when I drop someone off - no matter when or where, I always wait for them to enter their house.

Why? Because what if they forgot their keys, no one is home, and they are stranded outside of their house? Id much rather bring them home with me than find out after the fact that they never got in their house.

Thats what responsible friends and family do.

It wasn't too long ago that that was the norm. One would watch and ensure that the person they were dropping off got into the house safely. We're only talking about seconds not minutes. I guess this is just naother one of those "Yea me, FU" moments, huh argue?

By saying "The U.S. Postal Service is defending a mail carrier..." and "Family members say hours later, a mail carrier walked by the body to deliver the mail but did nothing to help." it does implies blame on some level.

The man just worked the night shift so the family may have still been asleep and since the time just changed, it may have still been dark out when the mail carrier came by, thus the misidentification of the body. The family may also be known to go all out with Halloween decorations as well and may have still had a few sitting out. The only real firm conclusion we can draw is that this is just another filler article.

Okay, you have to bring up unions. You know all those pensions that are getting raided and people who work hard all their lives are getting the shaft after private equity firms gut their companies? Yeah. Well, being in a union protects your retirement benefits and does not allow you to be walked all over by big business. So shut up about unions. They look out for the workers.

People can only function on the information they think they have or the things they think they see. There would have been no reason for the letter carrier to not stop and help if he actually thought that it was a real person. A mail carrier is not supposed to stop and touch decorations. That is what he thought he was dealing with.

He acted on the information he thought was correct and he was doing his job. It is highly doubtful that he knew the guy was real and he just stepped over him..

              LOL, Tramp!

But seriously, I waved - more than once - at the damn Halloween Straw Man my neighbors perched on their door-stoop this year. Other times, I have hollered "Hello!" to a trashcan sitting in someones driveway, and almost called the police when a neighbor had tied a protective sheet around a tree near their window. I thought it was a peeper. These incidents were all at nighttime, of course; and yeah, yeah, don't worry - just this year my driver's license was restricted to daytime driving only.

On the other hand, my long-time letter carrier will come to my door to check on me when I procrastinate too long in getting the mail out of my mailbox. This letter carrier knows I live alone, am getting along in years, and have several health problems.

So we should not be so quick to judge, not knowing all the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.

Reason #342 why the USPS is a dinosaur that needs to be euthanized, return to the same state as many USPS employees ! Other cases in point: My local small post office from several decades ago. 2 years the stamp vending machine was removed. Now, if you need a couple of stamps you line up sometimes out the door as others in line are doing complex overseas package mailings. Post Office closes at 4:30 PM, and early on Saturday, -- very "convenient" for working people ! I received 2 (nobody home) "pink slips" asking that I pickup certified mail deliveries (very important legal documents) after the mail carrier did not attempt to deliver them. I was waiting just inside my house for them to arrive ! Who needs this drama ?

We don't know what position the body was in. If he was lying face down, or slumped over in a chair, he could have very easily been mistaken for a Halloween dummy--have you seen those things? They are designed to look real! Also, if the man had just died that night, and assuming the mail was delivered in the morning, the body wouldn't smell yet. It would have likely only been stiff, making it look more like a dummy.

I remember the first DOA I responed to... A man in his 70s or 80s who had died in his sleep. He was lying on the floor because his wife had attempted CPR. His body was stiff and he did NOT look real. If any of you have actually seen a dead body you might not be so quick to criticize. This poor guy is probably stressed out about the whole thing as it is, without all of the armchair quarterbacks judging him without knowing the exact situation.

I heard a clip of the widow on the radio this morning. She was lambasting the letter carrier.

His job is to be a "letter carrier." He is not a first responder, not a holiday decorator, not a doctor or an undertaker. I don't know what they thought his responsibility might be.

More than anything, the family should have opened the door and looked around after realizing that a family member was absent.

Do you want your mail on time, or not?

I delivered mail on a walking route for twenty years. Letter Carriers are so focused on delivering the mail as quickly as possible that what is going on outside the mail in their hands and on their arms (and being aware of dogs) kind of gets lost in their peripheral vision. I can totally understand how the letter carrier mistook this unfortunate individual for a mannequin. The letter carrier probably was aware of the shape he or she was sidestepping but certainly not specifics.

To take this case you would have to be a pretty stupid or crooked attorney.... but i regress...

Dale Porch was dropped off at home last week after working the night shift for the Regional Transportation District but never made it inside

we simply must ban car pooling... or sidewalks......or both... after all something did this poor guy in. maybe we should add natural causes to the list as well.......

Family members say hours later, a mail carrier walked by the body to deliver the mail but did nothing to help.

Who are these people the Adams family?
