Petraeus' biographer Paula Broadwell under FBI investigation over access to his email, law enforcement officials say

CSM Marvin L. Hill

Paula Broadwell with Gen. David Petraeus.

The biographer for resigning CIA Director David Petraeus is under FBI investigation for improperly trying to access his email and possibly gaining access to classified information, law enforcement officials told NBC News on Friday.

Paula Broadwell is the author of Petraeus' biography, "All In." She had extensive access to Petraeus in Afghanistan and has given numerous television interviews speaking about him.

Petraeus resigned Friday, citing an extramarital affair. The woman involved was not identified.

Law enforcement and multiple U.S. officials told NBC News that emails between Petraeus and Broadwell were indicative of an extra-marital affair.

Earlier, law enforcement officials said they do not believe the FBI investigation will result in any criminal charges. They also stressed that Petraeus is not under investigation.

The CIA declined all comment on the case. Broadwell could not be reached for comment.

Broadwell's Twitter account describes her as a national security analyst and Army veteran. A biography on her website, which went offline Friday evening, said she is married to a radiologist and has two children, both boys. The family lives in Charlotte, N.C. The biography said she is a West Point graduate and a research associate at Harvard University's Center for Public Leadership and a doctoral candidate in the Department of War Studies at King's College London.

Richard Engel is NBC News' chief foreign correspondent. NBC News' Robert Windrem, Kristen Welker, Michael Isikoff and Pete Williams contributed to this report.

NBC's Richard Engel and the Washington Post's David Ignatius discuss the breaking news of CIA director David Petraeus' resignation.

Author Paula Broadwell joins Morning Joe to discuss her new book on Gen. David Petraeus, bringing attention to troops who suffer from PTSD, and the relationship between Gen. Petraeus and Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

Hmmm. Wasn't John Edwards ruined due to his affair with the woman who was supposedly doing a documentary on him?

He was ruined because he funneled campaign money to her. That and he was running for President of the United States.

That has never been proven, although it's probable that he did.

Yes, John Edwards was ruined by the woman who was doing videos on him. They had a love child together.

John Edwards is a liar to this day. Typical sleezebag lawer. I have to give it to Petraeus for admitting the truth and taking his fate. Not many have the sense to move on.

In multiple ways, John Edwards paid a hefty price, but at least he didn't give his biographer and mistress access to his government issued email account containing sensitive and classified info. Petraeus was incredibly stupid for doing that.

All In: The Education of General David Petraeus Sounds like a perfect title for a 1970's soft porn. Too bad, he's a great American. She most likely had a case of idol worship judging from her background. Two families hurting now, very sad.

You guys dont even know the whole truth because MSNBC isnt telling you everything! The reason anyone even suspected he was having an affair is because the FBI is investigating the terror attach in Benghazi. Petraeus came out with it before the FBI found out! The investigation didnt start because someone was investigating this woman, it's becuase they were investigating why no one did anything when they knew the embassy was under attack. Something MSNBC doesnt seem to want to cover becuase it may make Prince Obama look bad.

There is no way the timing of his resignation was coincidentaly three days after the election. If he was a security risk and had to resign today, he certainly was when the FBI found out. THis was held until after the election, big scam.

You got this one right.

The reason for the "cover-up" regarding Benghazi is that Petraeus screwed up and Obama was covering for him.

Petraeus' resignation is likely because of that Benghazi screw-up rather than his marital screw-up.

Very disturbing info coming out. Seems like she tried to break it off and he e-mailed her thousands of times after. C.I.A director totally unhinged not a good picture. Funny what a hard body can do to a man's mind, feel bad for his wife. This just adds to the mess of Benghazi and now the press without an election to protect is full on this complete story with Senator Feinstein leading the charge. It defies logic that it took 14 hours for the US military to show up in Libya and the C.I.A operatives took 3 hours to get out of the airport. We have Delta forces that could have been there in less than 2 hours and F-18s in less than an hour. The truth will come out.

One more Republican sent on down the road for a possible future Presidential Candidate. Maybe they can recall Romney back for his most recent point of views. There's more to this story than what we're hearing. Also, Edwards was acquitted on all accounts of money funneling, etc. (a set up for the trap by the GOP). Edwards was not sent to jail, nor given a fine. So, you see it happens on both sides of the fence on all levels. Just keep the facts straight on Edwards. There's a lot more of this behavior going on everywhere, including D.C. (not to mention crooked deals, favoritism, etc.). And please Republicans , don't go down the road of blaming this on Obama, too. We're sick and tired of that trite rhetoric trash talk that "Obama's to blame for everything", which is one of many example of why the Republicans lost this last election. Facial expressions in the top photo tell a lot, too! I feel bad for both spouses and the two children for this affair.

Piers Morgan on CNN just reported that the slaughtering of Ambassador Stevens and the three Navy Seals happened over a 14 hour period. This should not have happened at all. I thought it lasted 5 hours.

The saying "God works in mysterious ways" is so true. Because of Petraeus' affair the media has to talk about it. The media was not talking about Benghazi. Fox News and CNN did talk about it. MSNBC never mentioned it along with ABC, NBC & CBS.

Paul Brenner just told Piers Morgan that with or without Petraeus testifying we will get to the bottom of it. I think the State Dept. & the White House are hiding something.

Didn't Obama say in his 2008 campaign that he was going to be 100% transparent? Well, God works in mysterious ways. We will see how transparent he is. Obama needs to finally answer some questions and the media needs to stop covering for him.

Oh how convenient, the good general resigns just in time to get out of the Benghazi investigation.

Then there's Hillary willfully crawling under the bus for Obama and now she's going to resign.

Bet Hillary will leave just before Congress hauls her up to sit in the hot seat.

And would ya looky here! The Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta is resigning too.

How much do we want to bet that Panetta will leave JUST BEFORE he has to respond to Congress about Benghazi?

If I were a betting man, I would place my bet on Panetta's premature departure BEFORE THE HEARING!

Come on people, too many Obama administration folks connected to Benghazi are up and resigning.

Is Petraeus resigning because he REALLY did have an affair? Who with?

Again, oh how convenient! Stay tuned.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when the whitehouse was cooking all this up. We are aware of Petraeus or Broadwell's background. We are also aware of Obama's background before he was allowed to the whitehouse and that should have never happened. Another conspiracy to discredit, credible sources. The early news from Bengazi, and likly the most accurate, cannot stand.

Now, there are many things beyond looks that make one attractive.

Attentiveness to one's life and occupation.

Not always given by one's spouse. Harder over many years.

This is not to endorse his actions.

We all make our choices. Some good. Some not so much.

Let's hope they get past that.

Funny how rt wingers are going off about this news...

yet they just put up two candidates for the office of president of the United States...that were having affairs and it did not bother them at all....In fact they cheered these two hypocrites on knowing all about the affairs. Newt Gingrich on his third wife after he cheated on both of his first two wives when they got sick, was trying to impeach president Clinton for doing the same thing ol Newtster was doing....Repubs had the Newtster boy at the top of their list knowing this!

Then they had Herman Cain, I did not have sex with those women,...I would like to....but I had sex with the blond, and the brunette and the red head.....shucky ducky......Again, the repubs still had him at the top of their list for president of the United states.......

So what does this tell you about the values of Rt wingers and their supportive republicon beliefs...it speaks for itself.....

I think somehow the affairs of Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are linked to the coverup of the Bush Cheney lie into Iraq war.....where thousands of our troops died......Piers Morgan needs to investigate this........

She was the daughter of the Commandant of West Point when Petraeus was a Cadet....He married her before he Graduated....So, yeah, That might have had something to do with his meteoric rise through the ranks....I'm not saying that when he was General Petraeus, he wasn't a great military leader, just that being related to rank early on has its privileges...Sad way to end a career, checked his honor at the door when he accepted the Appointment to CIA from 0bama.....he shoulda just retired...Instead of morphing into CIA Director Betrayus....

I was about nine years old when Watergate happened. I remember hearing a whole slew of names: Hunt, Earlichmann, Liddy, Dean, Agnew....They all went down one by one until it reached the White House. I did not understand it completely at that age and it was later when I saw the movie "All the President's Men" that I understood. This is so similar. I will indeed "stay tuned."

Let's talk about FACTS First:

President Obama's Proposal to US Congress demanded "Across the Board Cuts" to All Programs (like Medicare), Projects (like the US Army Corps of Engineers Longterm Infrastructure Projects within the US, like Levees, Bridges, Water Reserviors, Dredging, etc.), Agencies (FEMA, CIA, VA, US Department of State, etc.), including the cuts to the Benefits and Entitlements of the "47%".

The CIA is the President's Executive Intelligence Agency.

If you were the Director of any of the US Agencies would you want to be handing out Layoff notices. Especially, if you knew about the Bipartisan US Congressional 9/11 2001 Commission (Committee) Investigations, Findings and Recommendations, in that President Clinton had Gutted the US Intelligence Agencies that left the US Blind and Deaf to the Events leading to the 9/11 2001 Attacks, and former President Clinton saying, "I'm a so sorry". With President Obama repeating the same mistakes and expecting a different result.

Known, President Obama hates anyone that is not a "Yes man or woman". Previously, General McKiernan, General McChrystal, Secretary of Defense Gates, US Ambassador Eikenberry, maybe SOS Clinton, etc.. I would resign also if President Obama refused to listen to those matters that would result in unnecessary deaths.

There are "Insiders" and "Outsiders" of the CIA; "Insiders" are those that have worked with the CIA, done exceptional things for the CIA or have been CIA for a very long time. And example of an "Insider" would be Director of the CIA Bush later President Bush (41) the exceptional thing he did was build up the CIA. Another kind of "Insider" would be US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces routinely attached to the CIA's SAD/SOG doing the Dirty Deeds that the "Ivory Tower" CIA will not do; eventhough, General Petraeus (Ret) was a US Army Ranger, that is not considered US Military Asymmetric Warfare and General McChrystal (Ret) US Army Special Forces is. "Outsiders" usually Political Appointees, not trusted because they are there at the whim of the President, when that President is no longer in Office those Politicial Appointees are gone also.

There have been "Power Plays" between various Agencies against the US President. Example: FBI and CIA got dirt on numerous Politicians.

Now let's talk about Libya:

Without disclosing Classified (information withheld from US Public):

Life during President Gaddaffi, contract with Libyan Citizens in his "Green Book": Loans to Libyan citizens were given with "NO interest". Students would get paid the average salary for the profession they are studying for. If you’d be unable to get the employment the state would pay the full salary as if you were employed. When you got married the couple got an apartment or house for free. You could go to college anywhere in the world, the state paid 2,500 euros plus for accommodation and a car. The cars were sold at factory cost. Libya does not owe money, (not a cent) to anyone, No credits. Free education and health care. 25% of population with a university degree. No beggars on the streets and no homeless. Bread costs $0.15. Gasoline $0.33 per liter, during the attacks $0.66 per liter. Human Rights and Libyan Citizen's Rights as praised by the UN and UA (African Union). All this disappeared after the Overthrow of President Gaddaffi.

President Gaddaffi and Libya as a US Ally, to get the President Bush US and UN Sanctions and Embargoes lifted so he would ship Libyan Oil to the US European Allies: Collaborated with the CIA. President Gaddaffi had his Libyan Military hunting the Islamic Jihadists at Libya. Stopped his pursuit of Nuclear Power. Turned over his Chemical Weapons to the US. Transfer of US Islamic Jihadists Prisoners from Guantanamo to President Gaddaffi's Prisons (including later President Obama's). Human Rights and Libyan Citizen's Rights as praised by the UN and UA (African Union).

The Fundamentalist Islamic Arab League of Nations is demanding President Gaddaffi's Death for Collaborating with the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers, a Death Penalty Fatawa is issued.

Most of the work that the Libyan Citizens do not want to do are done by Foreigners brought into Libya, and have no Libyan Citizens Rights nor the Libyan Citizens Entitlements listed in President Gaddaffi's Green Book.

The Holy Warriors of Islam (aka Islamic Jihadists) are gathering at Libya, after the Overthrow of US Ally Egypt. Many Intelligence Agencies are stating that these Islamic Jihadists are the Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. as trained by the Quds Special Forces of the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran at the Fundamentalist Islamic Autonomous Kurdistanis Region of Northern Iraq, Syria, Southern Turkey, and Northwestern Iran to Overthrow the Established Governments of US Allies.

President Gaddaffi warns everyone about the Fundamentalist Islamic Jihadists gathering at Libya, President Gaddaffi's Military starts to fight them, the Islamic Jihadists go back and forth between Libya and Egypt, so President Gaddaffi's Libyan Military cannot eliminate the Islamic Jihadists without violating Egypt's Sovereignty. President Obama ignores this just like he ignored US Ally Iraq, US Ally Egypt, US Ally Saudi Arabia, US Ally Turkey, US Ally Pakistan, President of Syria, etc. until it was too late.

President Gaddaffi f**ks up, declares Libyan Oil Nationalization. Due to President Obama's Policies the US and US Allies have lost the Iraqis Oil, this makes the Libyan Oil of Strategic Importance to the US European Allies. Other Governments that previously declared Oil Nationalization, with them being Overthrown, Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh of Iran (1953), President Hussein of Iraq "Modernization of the Arab World" (Iraqis Oil Nationalization). Failed US Overthrow attempt President Chavez of Venezuela (1999-2000).

Why Benghazi: Thousands of Islamic Jihadists flood into Benghazi with the Asymmetric Warfare intent of killing the Libyan Military Guards, seizing the weapons, ammunition at the the 60 bunker Hight Razma facility on the eastern outskirts of Benghazi and a 35 bunker facility on the eastern outskirts of Ajdabiyah." The term "bunkers" is a misnomer as some of these "bunkers" were the size of warehouses. After the Libyan Military Guards were massacred at these Libyan Munitions Depots, the Facilities were left unguarded. This is how about 20,000 shoulder launched portable SA-7 anti aircraft missiles ended up "missing"; believed to be currently in the hands of Al Quada and the rest of the Islamic Terrorists (Jihadist, Worldwide Islamic Military), possible use shoot down US and US Ally Commercial Airlines (Aircraft) worldwide (after all the other publicly known failed attempts); most US Military and US Ally Military Aircraft have detection and countermeasures (some are still shot down by SA-7s, mistaken for RPGs (similar warhead). ). Then inciting the Foreign Workers brought into Libya to demand Libyan Citizens Rights and Entitlements.

President Gaddaffi sends his Libyan Military to fight the Islamic Jihadists and Foreign Worker Protesters and Demonstrators gone violent (murdered Libyan Military).

President Obama then claims that President Gaddaffi is a "Dictator Killing his own people" (not Gaddaffi's own Libyan Citizens but Islamic Jihadists).

President Gaddaffi orders the Foreign Workers to leave his Country, most do not and actively join the Islamic Jihad to Overthrow President Gaddaffi the Collaborator to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers; again the Fundamentalist Islamic Arab League of Nations demands the Overthrow of President Gaddaffi.

The Libyan Oil:

During the "G" Meeting at France, that was attended by SOS Clinton, the European Oil Corporations Lobby the European Politicians to Overthrow President Gaddaffi to stop his Libyan Oil Nationalization (majority of Profits remain in Libya); the Fundamentalist Islamic Arab League of Nations (Original Charter the Elimination of the Jews) as a new Member, League of Arab States, aka Fundamentalist Islamic Arab League of Nations, demands the Overthrow of Former US Ally President Gaddaffi and February 22, 2011 remove President Gaddaffi from membership (President Gaddaffi's Military killing Holy Warriors of Islam originally went to Libya to Overthrow President Gaddaffi as previously demanded by the Fundamentalist Islamic League of Arab States.).

These European Oil Corporations demand President Gaddaffi's Overthrow to stop his Libyan Oil Nationalization: BP (Britain), Total, Elf (France), Eni (Italy), OMV (Austria), Statoil (Norway), etc.. So instead of these European Oil Corporations hiring cheap Libyan Labor then keeping all the Profits, with Gaddaffi's Resource Nationalization, they would get almost nothing and the majority of the profits would remain in Libya. So in anticipation of their Governments Military Actions to Overthrow Gaddaffi to stop his Resource Nationalization, "Non essential" personnel were evacuated February 21, 2011.

US Army Special Forces LTC Woods and his Specialized Security Teams are at Libya since February. It is Routine to attach US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces to the CIA's SAD/SOG to conduct Targeting and Target Damage Assessments to minimize Civilian Casualties during Airstrikes and Cruise Missile Attacks. The US Military Asymmetric Warfare Forces Missions are routinely Special Reconnaissance, Special Surveillance, Foreign Internal Defense, Insurgency (training the locals to Overthrow a Established Government), Counter Insurgency (stop others from Overthrowing a US Ally's Established Government), etc..

President Obama as Commander In Chief Orders the US Military to attack Libya in violation of the US Law that Restricts or Limits the Presidential War Powers, US Law, 1973 War Powers Resolution (Act), An Impeachable Offense. President Obama failed to notify both Houses of US Congress 48 hours prior to ANY US Military Actions. US Congress does not have time to write a US Law with US Congressional Appropriations, like they did for President Clinton (42) and President Bush (43). President Obama uses not previously Budgeted for Discretionary Spending including to fund NATO's Bombs, Fuel, Cruise Missiles, etc.. Afterwards on behalf of President Obama SOS Clinton apologizes to US Congress (Admittance of Guilt), "I'm sorry".

The Results: President Gaddaffi is murdered. Most of the Libyan Citizens that benefited as President Gaddaffi Supporters flee Libya (See Life During President Gaddaffi above). The Islamic Jihadists get another Islamic Nation. Mediterranean Ports closer to attack the US European Allies aka Crusaders. US European Allies lose the Libyan Oil to the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran's Ally, the Chinese. 20,000 portable shoulder launched anti aircraft SA-7 missiles end up in the hands of the Islamic Jihadists with their stated goal of shooting down US Civilian Airlines "to cripple the US Economy". Strategic Location for the Islamic Jihadists to get the other African Nations, just like Egypt was key to get Libya.

The Libyan Islamic Fighting Group were those Islamic Jihadist Foreign Fighters that were killing US Military at Iraq, they become the Government of Libya.

The Fundamentalist Islamic Al Quada Saudi Arabia (AQ), Al Quada Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), Al Quada Syria (AQS), Al Quada Yemen (AQY), Hezbollah, Al Quada Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), etc. at Libya become Ansar Al Shariah to protect and instate Fundamentalist Islamic Shia (Sharia) Laws as the Rule of Law for Libya.

Ansar Al Shariah starts planning their attacks against the US And US Allies, and eliminations of Pro President Gaddaffi Supporters as Collaborators to the Christians, Jews, Unbelievers.

Update October 2012: As stated before Libya is Strategic to attack other African Nations, Ansar Al Shariah attacks Mali.

Result DEAD US CITIZENS and the Islamic World's Increased Hatred of the US for the "Murder" (their word) of their "Holy Warrior of Islam" Superstar Osama Bin Laden. This is worse than going to Italy and Murdering the Pope and continually bragging Internationally. Most Pro US and Neutral Islamic Believers Worldwide then join the Holy Warriors of Islam against the US and US Allies. US Army Special Forces LTC Wood and his US Army Special Forces Specialized Support Teams writes up a Security Assessment for the US Embassy at Tripoli, and the US Consulate at Benghazi, as well as an "On the Ground" INSUM for Libya. This Security Assessment would have gone thru multiple channels, the President's Own Executive Intelligence Agency, the CIA, cc President Obama; SOS Clinton and the US Department of State, cc President Obama; Secretary of Defense and Pentagon, cc, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, cc President Obama; Redacted, cc President Obama; Commander US AFRICOM, cc Commander US SETAF, cc Commander US EUCOM, cc President Obama.

US Ambassador Stevens is a Presidential Appointee, with Direct Access to President Obama.

US Ambassador Stevens states his concerns, and requests that US Army Special Forces LTC Wood and his US Army Special Forces Specialized Support Teams remain at Libya, and or addtional US Security Forces (not Libyan). Before any of you start saying what could the few of US Army Special Forces LTC Wood and his US Army Special Forces Specialized Support Teams could have done, go learn about the previous Historically Documented DA (Direct Action) Missions of the US Army Special Forces.

I got to see the entire Video that is more than likely going to be posted in the future as an Islamic Jihadist Training Video, that starts with Ansar Al Sharia driving up with pick up trucks with heavy machineguns, and mortars mounted to the pickup truck beds and ending with the guy in the white shirt being interviewed with looters in the background. There are also the limited video surveillance cameras of the US Consulate Benghazi, the video recovery being one of the primary missions of US AFRICOM as coordinated thru US SETAF. Just because you don't have access, just like the mission cams, video conferences for the SR Mission that turned into a DA Mission (Raid) at Pakistan in accordance with President Bush's 2006 Amending the US No Assassination Policy and previously Presidential Delegated Authority Planned Mission; go right ahead, you can wait about 20 years and obtain the information about 20 years from now thru the FOIA (Freedom Of Information Act).

If you want to see the start to finish Islamic Jihadist videos attack on the US Consulate, learn to use the almost illegal means to circumvent the US Monitoring and Censorship that blocks the videos from the US based on IP Addresses, this training (how to) video is like the Islamic Jihadist's Training Video for their attacks against USMC Leatherneck (British Camp Baston) at Afghanistan

From the Article:

and the relationship between Gen. Petraeus and Gen. Stanley McChrystal.

General Petraeus was the Commander at Afghanistan with General McChrystal as his Right Hand man for all matters pertaining to US Military Asymmetric Warfare as the Commander of Joint Special Operations Task Force Iraq, locate and capture of President Hussein. General McChrystal as the previous Commander of Special Operation Command was really the expertise of all of General Petraeus' US Military Asymmetric Warfare (Counter Insurgency part) Warfare.

Register Democrat General McChrystal like General Petraeus were NOT "Yes men". Those of us that served with General McChrystal know what really happened between him and President Obama; as the same with General McKiernan and President Obama.

david, nobody cares. we voted for Obama again cause he is the best choice. you give him no credit for Bin laden but want to blame him for libya. I think that says it all.

second, as a tree hugging liberal, i dont give a rats behind if patreas has sex with a woman, and if he had sex with a man I would not care either. he's not a politician anyway. not that it should matter. With all the lies and all the demonization from the right, Obama still won because people like you are not the majority, you are the minority. people who want to judge, people bent on trying to do gods job instead of god's work. you should be ashamed of yourself, but your not capable.

Petraeus was a George Bush (Commander in Chief) Military Four Star General that ran the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan during his Terms in Office..

President Obama took him on; then making him the CIA Director. The "Affair" might not be the problem.

There is something else that is driving the "Resignation" (Fired), because it may be Pres. Obama and Gen. Petraeus were on a different page of running the Afghanistan War--they may have a history together of not agreeing on the appropriate exit/the way the War was run in Afghanistan, (thus making him the CIA Director) and possibly Iraq (already a done deal)---This is to Save Face for both of them.

There is more to this story than just the Biographer----Most Powerful Men have "other women"; they are notorious for the Affairs---the wives actually do not mind, except for someone like the late Elizabeth Edwards, who was on her death bed, while this piccolo was sneaking behind her back--A Disgusting man, with no Conscience for the responsibility of his sick wife--

No shock re: Petraeus; just the timing of his Resignation, after Pres. Obama won the Election. Why Now, and not before?

Right now is the time for the right to eithe move to the center and get on board with the rest of us or become political dinasours. Ethier way your choice. "Ok I guess for the next four years we are going to have the same trolls beating the same dead horses that caused them to lose this election and will cause them to lose the house in a couple of years ..."

Yep, 'breadex', I had the same thought today. And I am vigorously using the "ignore this author" feature to give myself 4 years of peaceful enjoyment of Newsvine. Life is much more pleasant when the trolls, demagogues and tin-foil helmet conspiracy theorist's posts are invisible on my screen.

The ignore feature makes it much more enjoyable to engage with the civil, thoughtful (and intelligent) contributors who have rational and well-reasoned arguments on all sides of the sociopolitical spectrum, rather than those who are always setting their own hair on fire and attempting to put out the flames with a hammer (post #1.44 for example).

Try the "ignore" feature, you'll like it.

Cheers! Robert.

We now know that his "biographer(wink wink)" is the woman with whom he had the affair. According to the article, "The law enforcement officials said they do not believe the FBI investigation will result in any criminal charges." So, they're just punishing this woman for humping the general, huh? If they don't believe charges will result, then they don't actually believe this woman committed a crime. It's called a witch-hunt. And the FBI/CIA are very good at it. Look for this woman to be completely trashed by law enforcement. In fact, if anyone should be charged with a crime, it is the general. He is the one who provided access to this woman - which could be an act of treason!!!

Hmmm. Wasn't John Edwards ruined due to his affair with the woman who was supposedly doing a documentary on him?

The differences being that

  1. General Petraeus came forward and admitted his affair, while John Edwards indulged in a variety of morally offensive, and ultimately embarrassing stratagems to hide his.
  2. General Petraeus was a man of genuine accomplishment, the commanding officer who pulled George W. Bush's chestnuts out of the fire in Iraq, honorably managed the Afghanistan War, and became a well thought of director of the CIA. John Edwards, by contrast, is basically a life support system for a business suit, and ego, unattached to any intellect or character, who was a non-entity in Congress, and a miserable choice as a V.P. candidate in 2004.

Despite this misstep, General Petraeus remains a person I respect. Hopefully his forthright manner in facing this issue will allow him to resurrect both his career and his marriage.

John Edwards I regarded as useless long before his extramarital affair came to light, and I voted for him and John Kerry in 2004.

Yeah, Marchant, you really think that Petraeus and Obama couldn't come up with a better, "face saving" reason for resigning (being fired) from his post as CIA Director?

    Really?

As to why his resignation occurred after the election, probably a matter of mutual agreement between the two men. Obama did not want a scandal breaking on the eve of the election, and Petraeus, as the person at fault, did the honorable thing and agreed to postpone the announcement.

My only suspicion is that this woman, as yet unidentified, in some way gained access to classified information, potentially compromising both Petraeus and the CIA. Otherwise, the affair would likely have remained a personal matter, affecting only the two individuals, and their families.

      A Dependent Thinker

And please Republicans , don't go down the road of blaming this on Obama, too. We're sick and tired of that trite rhetoric trash talk that "Obama's to blame for everything"

Hmmm. I read somewhere that Petraeus was appointed Director of the CIA by president obama. Where was that? Oh yeah, it was Wikipedia.

Now in the old days when Presidents were RESPONSIBLE, they would put things on their dest saying something like "The buck stops here!" I haven't seen or heard of anything like that in the last 60 odd years and evidently obama is not going to start the trend again.

And as for your "sick and tire of that trash rhetoric talk that 'obama's to blame for everything'", I can sympathize with you there, bud. The world has been listening to you complain and blame about GWB for the last 4 years....as our national debt went up 100% while he wasted time complaining about the treatment of Henry Gates by law officers that were simply doing their duty(if I'm a racist, why would I vote for Allen West as our CinC in a heartbeat? It's values and policies, not skin color!)Don't get me wrong, I wasn't overly fond of GWB myself but if irresponsible is the key word, then he and obama could have been cut from the same cloth.

Men and women both let them self's go after they get married. It takes longer for men. Woman use the Excuse that I had kids. Well that dog don't hunt. My first wife had 4 kids and look just like she did right out of High school well into her 40's. This is a 2 way street. If a woman wants to keep her husband, then she would take care of herself. She should do that for herself. How many time do you see a woman that just got divorced loos all that weight? Just long enough to fine a new man and start the cycle over again. In the Military, the old saying is marry a ugly wife, then when your gone no one will have her. And when you away you can do who ever you can. And just for the Record, John Edwards funneled more then money to Hunter. That baby came from more then funneling money to her.

People this is the beginning for many of you who voted for Obama. Look at his cabinet you have people that were born in Iran. This Lady is the negotiator between the white house and Iran. Very good. There you go. someone that was not born here manage to work in the white house before you or one of your children. So probably that makes two the president that many say he was not born here and this lady that was born in Iran. Aren't you a shame of your self that an immigrant took your sons and daughter place. I told you before Obama will not turn his back on his people Blood is Blood. He could have been born here but his father and grand father and so on were born from Muslim following people in Africa. Just compare we have Italian that were born here since the 18 hundreds and Irish and polish and Hispanic but they still carry their blood and the best way they should their pride toward their country even though they were born here they put a flag on their Automobile to show their support for there country.

So far they have not said anything to indicate the woman's identity, and nothing to say this is the same woman. Reporters on the radio (PBS) yesterday commented on the potential security issues raised by a CIA director having a secret affair, it could be that this email access issue is related to security investigations pertaining to Petraeus without the biographer being the partner to the affair.

Re Chris Stephens, so far I have seen or heard nothing from any authoritative source that he did not die of smoke inhalation after being separated from the consulate security chief and that he was brought to the hospital by locals, trying to help, who found him in the building.

VIndicator, I watched the video. Retired General McCaffrey does speak of the border regions being dangerous. At no point does he advocate, as you claimed, that the U.S. should invade Mexico.

                Moreover, your original statement,

Virtually every good American military commander has told his commander-in-chief that America must soon invade Mexico in order to save American lives and the country itself.

emphatically states that the high echelons of the U.S. Military are clamoring for an invasion of Mexico. I asked for an example, just one. You give me a retired general whose opinions are not universally held, and you cannot even provide a single quote of him advocating for war.

Was my question not plain enough?

It is easy to claim anything, vindicator. Much more difficult to prove it. Your attempt to link General Petraeus's recent resignation to a supposed Obama plan to subvert our nation through uncontrolled immigration from Mexico is about as creditable as recent sightings of Elvis.

All the conspiracy theorists and extreme partisans who want this to be about something else (nay, NEED this to be about something else), should hang up your tin-foil helmets and grow up. You are only making fools of yourselves in public!

Yes, 'David-475776', I'm talking about you and your delusional cadre of "smoking-gun whackadoodles" who, in your on-line anonymity, always pretend to have some personal experience or special insight or personal inside knowledge in order to try to make your bizarre, mental gymnastic fabrications seem more credible to the casual reader (and probably to yourselves, as well). You are all frauds and pretenders. We all know it, and absolutely no one except your own kind is taking you seriously.

Get some professional help, take your meds, and you all can live more normal lives.

                ---------------------------

This unfortunate situation is just "Basic Spycraft 101: You do not engage in personal behavior which makes you vulnerable to blackmail and manipulation by a foreign power or foe."

It's a very good thing indeed that the FBI stumbled upon this (while examining Ms. Broadwell's e-mail messages following-up on an electronic harassment complaint) and that it was the FBI which was the entity which privately and respectfully confronted CIA Director Petraeus; rather than some foreign intelligence agency or group discovering the secret extra-marital affair and turning it to their advantage.

The reason that the General resigned is exactly as stated, and why President Obama -- after 24-hours of deliberation and consultation -- had no choice but to accept General Petraeus' resignation. You violate "Rule No. 1" of your craft, ...and you have to go.

The business of foreign intelligence is not one which allows for stretching the rules in order to accommodate 'personal issues.' It's very, very serious business indeed..

HA! Thanks for the chuckle, WTF.

Well, as tempting as that might be ( and it is tempting :-) The list is long, and I think that would be a pretty good method for getting myself suspended ( or banned ) on Newsvine, ...and subjected to a litany of vigilante retribution by those listed.

And the reality of life (and individual opinion) is that my list of "ignored" trolls, demagogues and tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists ( and just general whackadoodles ) would be a different list for the next person; and they are probably classified as brethren heroes by their own kind ( ie., Insult one, you insult all )

And another reality of life is that those persons, from their own mental and emotional perspectives, would likely place ME in one or more of those same categories!!!! ( Oh, the horror!!! :-O )

If you are serious, however ( rather than your post being rhetorical ) let me know on my Robert in Oregon page, and I'll reciprocate by figuring out a way to provide my list to you, personally, rather than posting it publicly.

When all is said and done, while I will vigorously engage these folks one-on-one in individual responses to their posts or theirs to mine, ... it would be inappropriate to post such a list and defame them simply because I personally believe they may be off-the-rails mentally, or so deluded by partisanship that they cannot reason any longer, ....or possibly may be extraterrestrial aliens from the planet Non-Compos-Mentis trying to turn our brains to consommé before consuming our intellectual essence! ... ( Oops! Did I write that? LOL :-)

                  Cheers! Robert.

I gave you a sample of what an American general thinks about Mexico, not the actual intelligence reports. He's not going to talk about America's plans to invade on TV is he?

Vindicator, you gave me precisely nothing. You cite a RETIRED American General's quote regarding the border region of the South West. General McCaffrey retired from active service in 1996, 16 years ago. He served as the Director of the Office of U.S. Drug Control from 1996 until 2001. Since then his status has been that of a private citizen.

This may come as shock but RETIRED American Generals are not privileged to see actual current intelligence reports, and you are still relying only on your own supposition that plans to invade Mexico exist or that the high command of the U.S. Military is clamoring .

However, I'd be willing to listen to any evidence YOU have that American generals don't think America should invade Mexico.

You cannot prove a negative. Your statement is logically equivalent as saying prove there are no little green martians dancing on your lawn at night. I'm not assuming that little green men are dancing on my lawn just because I cannot prove they are not there, and I'm not accepting your remarkable claim that the U.S. Military is planning to invade Mexico, just because I've seen no proof to the contrary.

I'll repeat show me some evidence that the U.S. Military is straining to be unleashed against Mexico by the President, or please, have the good grace to admit you have no idea what you are talking about.

It is utterly amazing how people link totally unrelated stories to their favorite conspiracy theory. General Petraeus resigning in disgrace, so logically that must because he advocated invading Mexico.

                      What else could it be?

In the mean time, here is the opinion of a general from out of the past:

Yes, by all means let cite the words of an excellent general, and very poor president regarding a time and circumstance which has lapsed more than 150 years into the past. That will tell us... exactly nothing regarding current events in Mexico, along the Mexican border or at the Pentagon.

From the article on Petraeus's resignation:

"Dave's decision to step down represents the loss of one of our nation's most respected public servants," Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said in a statement, according to Reuters. "From his long, illustrious Army career to his leadership at the helm of CIA, Dave has redefined what it means to serve and sacrifice for one's country.".

Why do they describe civil servants when they've been caught with their pants down or with corruption as having "sacrificed" themselves by working in a public capacity?

Is it truly a sacrifice getting good pay, great benefits, job security and power?

We all live at least three lives separated by public, private, work, and in this case it looks like the private is being inserted into the public and work. Does this effect us, I do not know yet.

BS Debi. They would actually have to produce more to retain a position in the private sector and would be held accountable rather than having an "investigation" that strung out for years to try to hide the incompetence.

Patraeus is a great leader (something Obama could have learned from) but unfortunately thought with the wrong head as do many that have fallen to the human urges.

I suggest that, once again, it was a gold digger that saw the opportunity for living a life in the world of money and power and like most of us men unfortunately would up to a certain age, he succumbed.

If Petraeus was truly a man of civil service, why would he be "living the life in the world of money and power"? Is it acceptable for our government civil servants who are supposedly "sacrificing" themselves to gain money and power?

The right clowns cannot read. This broke because the FBI was investigating the lady for allegedly trying or breaking into his emails. Maybe it was a lovers thing or maybe in their eyes maybe she was a spy. Or even maybe she was just a writer checking to see if he was truthful. Since that got out he was over the barrell because when you get top security clearence you know you cannot do this as it can get you blackmailed etc. The mere idea that a person of his stature who should understand that this kind of activity cannot be done especially for a high ranking official in the spy game. Now to the nitwits with the purge stories. After any president is reelected some of his main members leave because it becomes a dead end job and better things are out there with far better futures than being a member of a team that will disband in four years. Mrs Clinton has said before she would probably not continue after the election but that consiracy theory is part of the big push to try and hang something on the president cause HE IS GGOING TO BE PRESIDENT FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS AND MAKING HIM A ONE TERMER DID NOT WORK> Live with it and stop making fools og yourself. We killed most of Alqueda's top oficials and to think that they would not get a lick or two in on us is stuid. Ranting on about it does not help anyone but the enemy. As to the ones that say Obama is cleaning house because of Benghazi. Well who was at fault here. I know the right wants so bad to make it Obama's fault. But it started with Paul Ryan Cutting funds for protection. That's #1. Then it comes down to the people on the ground there, CIA it seems in this case were there to protect this compound. Where were they? That's #2. Maybe just maybe we don't need to make public why the CIA was Charged with protection there. Might just be because no one was really to know who we had there. It was covert operation, why paint a big red target on there back's. Well the secret got out, and we paid. There isn't really anyone to blame here. Everyone knew it was risky. It didn't work out this time. Why don't we stop trying to make political hay out of it and move on.

His failure was the same one any of us is subject to when we let our guard down. The fact that he had such a high profile job in security for our country made it all the more humiliating. He did the right thing to resign. But he will do well, I measure, in the private sector. I thank him for his service. I wish him and his family the best in the healing to come. And I hope, on the other side of forgiveness, he will be stronger as a husband and a father. I wish him no ill will....just another voice...

You're right it is a sad thing. That the spouse feels so comfortable that the headache is a given. And he feels the need to stray. Sad state of "affairs" indeed.

I suggest they were both far from home and rarely there and just "got used to each other" and it seemed natural. Why anyone would admit to it, unless scorned, I have no clue. What happens on AF one stays on AF one.

Its not about getting the story off, in the military and the government, its sad to say but there are ALOT of affairs going on, the question is whether this affair interferes with your work. In this case his work was classified US interest information..so its not attacking the woman, its inverstigating the possibility that she has/had access to this information.

                            and FYI

                            -Educated women have affairs

                            -"respectable" women have affairs

                            -Mothers have affaits.

And it is not a far fetched accusation, after all she spent a year with him in afhganistan and wrote a book about him and also says on her website that she has "exclusive" access to him.

Although danger is probably the only reason its hot. But in short, I am annoyed because he had a responsibility to his position of security, and to us, the citizens, to not be compromised. The story about her trying to get into his email is very fishy. There is absolutely no possible way she could hack into his classified email account because she can't even get to that network. Guys at that level don't leave trails in email classified or not anyway. My bet is the administration knew about this affair for some time and has decided to move on it in the 7 day window between the election and his date to testify on Benghazi. First Gen Ham of Africom retires and now the Director of CIA resigns? Tall order to chalk this all up to coincidence.

Hillary stated in an article yesterday that a thorough investigation into what happened in Benghazi and what additional efforts need to be made to insure the safety of our over sea's Ambassadorial staff was being given top priority. All news doesn't focus on the one issue you think is important there's room for trivial news as well. The elections over and it's too late to find something to embarrass the president for. I get your point about priority news, but to be technical, they both may be guilty of a crime under the uniform code of military justice. The crime of adultery. He might be guilty of it if the affiar was going on while he still was on active duty. She might be guilty of the same because she is a currently serving Army Reserve officer. He could possibly be made to retire at a lower rank than General (like maybe Major General), two stars instead of four. She could get whatever the punishment is under the UCMJ. This all could happen. not saying it will.

D'oh! The FBI discovers this woman is reading his confidential EMAILS......the DIRECTOR OF THE CIA....and then he resigns due to an affair. I think we can wrap this up pretty easily. A 3 yr old can connect the dots.
How can a man stop thinking with his brain...and start thinking it his....nevermind.

obama threw Petraeus under the bus, then Petraeus said, we did not order stand down.

Petraeus is to testify next week...now he is not? He was a STAR witness in this hearing.

Now just lucky, he won't be able to? This is all BS..A cover up to make Watergate appear

Most Obama supporters I know supported him as the lesser of two evils. That doesn't make us admirers. I for one would much rather have Clinton. Though my opinion of Romney and right wing ideology is probably similar to yours of Obama.

The consulate at Bengazi was a CIA covert operation.

The head of the CIA having an affair, is not a tolerable situation.

Heard Hillary is resigning after the new term and they have a boatload of emails that show she asked for more protection at the Libyan Embassy and was denied. The hubba is they have hired a bunch of the world's best attorneys, so it sounds like they are loading up for a battle. I wouldn't put it past them to work to get BO impeached, so she can take the WH....Can this be true???

Hillary, as Secretary of State, would not have had to go to the White House regarding additional security for the Libyan Embassy or Consulate.

well, the secy of state is about 5th in line, so that conspiracy theory doesn't make sense. She's positioned to run in 2016, and it is doubtful that a huge scandal for obama would help her chances since there would be a backlash against dems in general.

I wouldn't expect her to stay, even if she has 2016 in mind. Needs the rest and the time to build a campaign staff, if that's what she wants to do. But, she certainly doesn't want to leave under a cloud regarding Benghazi. So, I guess three to six more months.

Hillary Clinton has said for a year at least that she'll resign at the end of Obama's first term, so her resignation shouldn't surprise anyone, even conspiracy theorists. Conspiracy theorists think everything that happens falls neatly into a plot line when real life is a lot more messy and random.

Her name is "Broadwell"? She wrote a bio of Petreus titled "All In"? Is this real life or a cheap spy novel?

No it's not a spy novel. It's a Non-fiction account of Petreus through the years, his education, military career...

This is potentially about more than a man that could not keep it in his pants. She could potentially be a spy for a foreign government. Seriously. Any sane person, who is in a relationship with someone like him knows damn well that accessing his email s a serious crime that could send her to prison for many years.

Just shows people, marriage is a serious thing. You can manage two wars at one time with no huge problems. Mess with a marriage and all heck breaks out.

She's really good looking but take note the cost: Two families pretty-much ruined ... dozens of people, when you count all the kids, all the cousins and all the in-laws that are taking a royal screwing by proxy.

Now, after all his years in the Army, he's reduced to being just a another cheating husband; she's simply The Other Woman. Not much of a resume' enhancer for either one of them.

                                    What a g-d waste!
