Los Angeles is hoping to persuade people to become vegetarian – at least one day per week. Under a resolution unanimously approved by the city council this week, all future Mondays in the City of Angels have been declared "Meatless Mondays."
It's part of an international campaign to cut down on meat consumption for health and environmental reasons.
Both the spiritual home of the hamburger and a haven for the health-obsessed, Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to support the Meatless Monday campaign. The nonprofit initiative, started in 2003, is associated with Johns Hopkins University's public health school.
Councilwoman Jan Perry, who introduced the motion with Councilman Ed Reyes, noted the environmental impacts of meat production, and she emphasized that a high-meat diet has been linked to health problems such as colon, prostate, kidney and breast cancers, as well as heart disease.
"Eating less meat can prevent and even reverse some of our nation's most common illnesses," Perry said.
"We've become disconnected in some ways from the simple truth that our health is directly affected by the foods we eat,'' she added.

Her motion posted 12-0 in a council session Friday.
Reyes said it is easy for individuals to feel helpless in the face of issues as big as global warming or the obesity epidemic, "but the small changes we make every day can have a tremendous impact. That's why this 'Meatless Monday' resolution is important. Together we can better our health, the animals and the environment, one plate at a time.''
The council resolution referred to the link between livestock and environmental problem, and noted that reduced consumption of animal-based foods can "lower our carbon footprint."
The decision was made "in support of comprehensive sustainability efforts as well as to further encourage residents to eat a more varied plant-based diet to protect their health, protect animals and protect the environment."
The resolution also pointed to statistics showing more than half of Los Angeles County residents are obese or overweight, and stated reduced meat consumption can lower health risks.

WTF!!!! No you damn tree hugging hippy. Today, Nov 10th is the United States Marine Corps 237th Birthday! And I plan on enjoying my steak. Semper Fi
As an L.A. denizen, this just gives me a weekly excuse to celebrate my independence as a meat-eating member of society over a hot plate of BBQ ribs. Now it's not just a meal, it's a STATEMENT! :-)
Semper Fi. I'm a USMC Vietnam vet, and no one at all is suggesting that you not enjoy a steak today. It's not Monday, after all. Even if it were, no one is trying to force this on anyone. It's simply a suggestion for something we can all do to improve our world and our health. How can you possibly take offense at that??
USN vet here. People can (and do) take offense at anything and everything. There are some who just can't be happy without being outraged by something at least every other hour of their waking day. If there can't be some bit of chaos in their lives--something to "stir the blood"--then they're not having a good day.
Oh this wont impact me the least. Its just that I can't believe there is nothing better to bring to the table then "Meatless Monday's" I Mean this seems to be a waste of time to me.
Here is to all the Marines who have fought and are fighting to Keep US Safe....Thank all of you for your service!!!! HAVE a GREAT and Honorable Day!!!
Welcome to socialist city, Los Angeles, where the local government is taxing, running, and ruining people's lives. And Californians are abandoning Los Angeles in droves, leaving behind a waste land of low income residents and illegal immigrants; a poorly educated work force; and urban blight caused by the exodus of financial capital.
The socialist regime has been social engineering and micro-managing people's lives under the banner of protecting the enviroment or saving your health. By city ordinance passed several years ago plastic shopping bags are banned, but you can buy a paper bag for 10cents from the retailer. The entire 10 cents goes directly into the city's treasury. Since retail vendor cannot receives profit from the sale of the paper bag, the retailer is a slave worker for the City. Then there's the helmet regulations for bicyclist, skate-boarders, and roller-blade users. No smoking laws are enforced with citations. Even pedestrians are cited for the slightest traffic infractions. It won't be long before the city will sell a special license to any retailer who wish to sell meat on Monday.
Disguised as protecting the health and public welfare of residents, the insolvent City of Los Angeles is collecting fines worth tens of millions of dollars in revenue each year. The money, of course, goes to worthy causes: fund the wages and pensions of the powerful police-fire-government worker labor unions as well as the corrupt politicians.
California Socialism at its best.
Oh, wah, wah, wah, Socialism this, Socialism that...
Some people with no official connection to anything in the federal government try and encourage the "fat" Americans to eat healthy and now THAT'S an issue! Make up your minds, America. Do you want to mock the overweight for their bad eating habits or mock attempts to improve those eating habits?
OMG, next thing you know those wackjobs in California will legislate a law that makes it a crime to eat meat on Mondays. So we'll then fill up the court dockets and prisons with felony meat eaters. This country is going into the $#!+er!
I hope this encourages more restaurants and fast food places to offer interesting, filling, and delicious meatless entrees on the menu at least once a week so meat-eaters might be tempted to try healthful alternatives. (Not saying that all vegetarian meals are low cal, low fat, or low carb...)
And you chest-puffing vets who equate patriotism with behaving in ways bad for your health and bad for this earth's sustainability? You look silly, not strong. Oh by the way, I'm retired military and taking care of myself, including staying slim and active and not wasting this world's resources, sets the best example for younger folks. That's leadership.
I was being sarcastic. Sorry you missed that. Next time, I'll include that irritating hashtag from the Twitterverse, #sarcasm, for your benefit.
"Oh, by the way..." I have never had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and I DO take care of myself. As I'm single and have no children, pets or other dependents connected to me draining the planet, I'm also not wasting this world's resources. So thanks for handing over the "Superior" hat to me. Here, you can have it back now.
LA is also pushing "homosexual Tuesdays" in which they will push the gay agenda further by encouraging everyone to be gay for a day.
looks like they could use a weedless Wednesday as well. these clowns just gotta be stoned 24 / 7 to just sit around dreaming this kinda crap up.
You are surprised the nanny state wants to control your life? Hey man they will be giving you a bedtime next. The totally contradictory radical liberal groups have been preening over what they would do to us if they won this election for four years. Haven't y'all been listening? Remember these are the people who require ethanol in gas and also complain and blame the farmers for raising food prices because they sell corn to ethanol plants. Where did you think ethanol came from? Stand up and jack off. I am also single no pets no medical problems not caused by birth control pills and I love steak, chicken and pork especially the kind of pork raised in hog confinements in Iowa. I like venison and nylgai Need a hunter willing to share. When you come to my house pay my bills and bring 15 lbs of meat to keep your side of the social contract then you get to tell me how to live and then I should offer you respect because you were born with external plumbing. Not before.
Timonthy1Mil, clearly, you're an idiot. Homosexual Tuesdays? Face the facts - there's more people on this planet that just simply don't fit that old norm of white, male and heterosexual anymore. Pushing THAT ideal on everyone is an agenda. Get over it and yourself.
Lord let secession pass in the next assembly and free us from these whack jobs on the coasts.
if you dont do it voluntarily they'll probably make it a law
ttmadison..you are a perfect example of left socialism..you pretend you want freedoom but unless people use your idea of freedoom you be little them.
this is America and people are allowed to make choices, eat and drink what they want and the government has no business sticking their nose in....i would think with the crappy state of affairs in california these people using tax payer money and time have much more important things they shoulkd be working on....
just as you choose to live healthy and think you are above everyone else, others can make alternative choices and they have the right to do so and the responsibility to deal with the consequences...
@blah blah blah and Timothy...you both have it wrong...its Man Love THURSDAY...
When you don't have a plan, redirect the focus. You have a city that has incredible fiscal problems. Instead of facing them head-on and finding solutions, these bozos (much like mayor Bloomberg) make things like veggie Mondays and small drink sizes the issue. Why don't these idiots spend a little time fixing the broken machine...you know, what they were hired for??!
Amazing, we hire senators and representatives to make policy to foster economic growth and job creation but what we get is their opinions about steroids in baseball...
Terry, you mean the same people bleating about "fraydom" when they are told it might be better for them to lay off the beer and cheesballs every once in a while, THESE SAME conservatives who are trying to legislate what consenting couples do in their bedrooms and women's reproductive and health matters?
I find that far more offensive than asking people to maybe JUST THINK about going meatless for a day. Then they squeal like stuck pigs when someone says, hey TRY not eating meat for one day and see how you feel. If you chose to educate yourself you would realize that soybeans and grains are instant vegetarian foods and it takes A LOT of grain to set aside just to feed ONE cow.
Might do a lot of people good to realize that one can still have a healthful, tasty, delicious meal without meat. Meatless Monday is not a new idea and has been around for a while
Lets see....
I live 2,000 miles from there thank goodness however, in support of the City of Los Angeles, I hereby proclaim the following:
Hamburger Monday where you eat as many burgers as you can stand
Sausage Tuesday same as Monday except with Sausage
Steak Wednesday where you eat pure steak as often as your wallet will allow
Pizza Thursday, where you eat as many slices of 3 meat pizza as you can stand
Taco Friday, Hamburger Taco celebration all day long
Saturday: Rib day eat as many ribs as you can stand
Sunday: Rib eye Steak (Or your favorite) all day Sunday.
I think LA has better things to do than proclaim useless proclamations. LA, stop being Food Cops!!!
Good Day
And all this is of course, just my opinion.
To all Marines, former Marines, my Marine friends who died at such a young age in war and all other Marines who died in conflict and never saw the many years of life most of us did after the war, Happy Birthday! Semper Fi.
I could care less what you eat but this hits home with McDonalds just after realizing its first loss in 9 years.
@ Magnum...
...and you only get a 16 oz. soda-pop to wash it all down!!
@ lemur lady...
I prefer deer and elk...
I cannot believe now these nuts are telling us what we can and cannot eat. We have the nut in New York that will not allow donations to the shelters because he can't measure the fat and salt content. When are we to start begging to go to the bathroom? How about telling us when we can go to bed and how long we must sleep? It is time to take back our country and our freedoms. It is time to tell LA and New York to drop dead.
If the government wants to regulate something let them put a stop to all the chemicals, anti-biotics, and growth hormones that our meat supply is subjected to. That is what is making us sick, unhealthy and overweight.
It's the JUNK FOOD! Stupid!!!! Good Grief!!!!
If the government wants to regulate something let them put a stop to all the chemicals, anti-biotics, and growth hormones that our meat supply is subjected to...
Agreed, but the cows think it's so yummy!
Don't worry, once all of these Obama tax hikes take effect, every day will be meatless because we will not be able to afford meat.
Not so sure about that, Fletch...
I see people all the time with two whole grocery baskets full of name brand foods and such...running their EBT card through the machine. Something tells me, there's about 47 million (with that number growing) who can afford meat...
How about stay out of my life free everyday. You have to wonder what is in the water in California and New York. There are alot more important things to worry about than someone eating a steak.
Fag free Friday
Sounds like LA was jealous because NYC's Bloomberg got the 16 oz soft drink idea out there.
The root word of government is "govern" which means to regulate. The more government, the more regulations imposed on you and I.
In a society, some governance is necessary, but clearly there comes a point where there is too much.
P.S. If you are going to have a meatless day, why not Friday which had been traditional for Catholics and several other Christian groups? Ooops, sorry. I forgot anything religious is also regulated.
Ok all you liberals....Where's the outrage? This is no different than if they declared a prayer day or fasting day. This is govt forcing its beliefs on you.
Typical liberal response is "no one's forcing it on you", but you did not accept that for national prayer day. And, some vegetarians are more wacko than Christians.
Govt's coming for you. They got your money. They're going after your guns. And now, they're trying to take away your hamburgers.
FIGHT THE POWER!!!
I'm a senior, with the cost of my meds, and the cost of beef, I haven't had beef in years.
You notice that the libs are crying for "Meatless Mondays", but, you never hear them calling for "T-bone Thursdays" or "Sausage Saturdays"! And I hear the bleeding hearts on this post saying that "It is just a suggestion"! The problem with liberals is that once you give them an inch (or a penny) they will next go in for a mile (or all your cash)! Incrementalism is the way that liberals slowly force their belief system on the rest of society!
If we allow "Meatless Mondays" to become "optional" it will soon become the law of the land! The same way where jello was banned in some Milwaukee school districts because some Muslim parents were afraid that there might be ground pork bones as a binding agent. Wouldn't it have been simple to just say, "Ahmed, do not eat the jello"!? The fact is that the liberals were almost doing backflips to assuage these few muslim parents! The same will sooner or later occur for vegetarians like it already happens for the Homosexual proponents and any other "Victim of the day" that is part of the liberal voting block!
fat people eat veggies too.
I'm so happy that the liberal now want to control what I eat and drink.
Get used to this lunacy - - Our country and lifestyle made a severe u-turn on Tuesday.
You ain't seen nothin' yet. Our country, as we have known it, is gone forever.
Boy, you liberals really do feel justified in pushing your socialistic agenda on people, don't you?
Do I get to push some religious restrictions on you now?
J. Howard...
I was thinking it...and you wrote it! If I didn't see it from my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. I don't want to try and imagine what we'll be in another 4 years...much less 10. Can we say "Europe", anyone?
blaming meat for environmental problems is like blaming food for Rosie O'Donnell being fat
LemurLady
nice bits of diatribe and liberal ideology talking points in your posts , but no real "MEAT"
Yeah, they can proclaim any day they want. Does not mean YOU have to follow it.. Grow up..
You people are so offended, it offends me and now my cat won't eat..
Hey Look! The government is wasting time on stupid stuff in California again! Meatless Mondays? Really???? They want to blame MEAT for the obesity crisis? How about blaming the government for sponsoring laziness by giving handouts to so many and not making them work for it? Laziness causes obesity.
Next, they will be offering you grape flavored "Jim Jones" kool-aide.
Stop telling people on what they should or shouldn't eat period.
Hey Dave, I have a SUGGESTION that liberal run cities mind there own business (impossible) and quit telling people how they should live.
Did Mike Bloomberg pay a visit?
Next, sex only on THURSDAYS.
lol i can imagine you now njk85. you probaly cant even run. sad. i feel sorry for you. i have been around the world and ive never seen a country as obese as americans. the fact they even have to talk about meatless for a day is amazing to me becuase most ppl around the world may only eat meat maybe once a week. i eat chicken or fish maybe couple times a month but americans eat it routine every single day? no wonder how can you not be obese. espcially american meat. the meat is filled with antiboitics and factory farm system. less then 5% of meat in america is actully organic or real meat. sure i love to have a cheesesteak but everyday? are humans bodies even developed to eat like that everyday? naturally we dont have the teeth or stomach to do that. we even have to cook our meat to eat it. i can go to europe or other countries and tell them how americans eat and they would think im joking so no point. i look at school menus and jail menus. meat every meal literally and if not pizza which is cheese.
then again i cant blame conservatives on this comment section becuase most of you dont know any better and its not your fault. the goverment serves processed food and meat to kids at school everyday. comercials and fast food all over. how are americans even suppose to know better. im very lucky to be educated and travel but not all americans have that opertunity. americans go to doctors like all the time. they take medicine like its food lol.
Dave, the problem with you and the liberals is that you do not understand WHY conservatives are being offended by the liberal playbook! We see our rights being eliminated by liberal "baby steps" and we are sick and tired of letting it go by. Do you know how they cook frogs? They put the frogs in cold water and slowly heat up the pot until it boils. By the time the frog is in real trouble it cannot hop out of the pot. I refuse to be that frog!
I also see that this "suggestion" will soon be forced into the schools so that our youngsters can be properly "indoctrinated" into proper thinking. This will be the next logical step for the liberals. Wake up, America!
Sounds like RC has drunk a few gallons of the liberal's "cool aid"!
Another useless gesture by a group of useless politicians.
At least they didn't outlaw the eating of meat.
I have friends and relatives who are vegetarians, but at least they aren't crazy about it.
Dan M...
RC sounds European to me...they wrote the book on "liberalism".
I have a better idea... no soft drinks, potato chips, snack crackers, french fries or foods that have no nutritional value ever! Outlaw food commericals on TV period! No magazine with food ads if the foods have no nutritional value. Have USDA take over this project.
Ido: Every Thursday ?
That's 51 more times than my wife allows now. :)
Vivian...
Sorry, but I have to ask...sarcasm? Gawd, I hope so!
Guess they've never heard of Dr.'s Eric Westman, Mary Vernon, John Briffa, just to name a few and research journalist Gary Taub. Perhaps they should they should know all the facts first!
RC- You make me laugh. I'm like most Marines out there. I Run a 5 mile course everyother day and go to the gym 6 days aweek. When I get bored I do pull-ups and push-ups. And for fun, acouple of my buddies and I go on flak runs. And just so you understand what this is, It's our flak jackets with e-sapi's (ballistic plates) and a combat load of ammo. it adds about 30-40lbs. This run is determined by home much time we have to waste. So the mass amount of protien we consume is needed. If you know any marines just ask them some of the dumb crazy @!$%# we do.
Hell the Roman Catholic church did this in the 7th century, once a week eat fish and vegetables only, or you will go to hell; the real reason is in the middle ages scurvy was widespread, however the monks (who could not afford much meat) were all healthy living on a fruit, veggie and fish diet; they can not make it a sin, but make it a law, have the veggie police out in force, arresting those meat eaters.
Hay davie thats how the libs do it. Its always a suggestion to see what kind of bite they get before they make it a law. Look at new york. You say grow up peaple. I don't know how to take that coming from a guy with a little mars guy for his icon...
Get off your self-righteousness you fool....it's about choice. We don't need a nanny gov. making these kinds of decisions for us - it's none of their business what we eat. You are an adult - well, maybe not you - but the rest of us are and we don't want these over-reaching, self-important id-jits to lay their life on us as the way we ALL should be and the way it should be - because they are so much smarter than we are.
These kind of people can kiss my azz and go straight to h*ll with their pious rightousness! Oh, and they can take fools like you, who need some one to tell them what to do, when to do it and who need to have others make their decisions for them, with them.
As for me , I'll make my own decisions regarding my own life and I will not hold anyone else to blame if I make any bad one's.
@ cantakenomore reason why i gave europe as a example is cuz they are probaly 2nd most in eating meat or up there and no1 is even close to america in eating meat. like india ppl rarley eat meat and a lot of them never ate meat a day in thier life. and duh right wing is all over the world. even china and iran and other countries goverments lean to the right so why wouldnt some countries in europe? most goverments only care about money and power.
@ Dan M-1100664 the hyprocrissy of you guys once again. liberals give suggestions like meatless monday. however conservatives dictate ppl. they force you to do it or go to jail like if you dont carry a ID your getting locked up! theres a huge difference. ppl are nice enough to help you and your bashing them. it says a lot of who you are as a person. no1 is forcing you do nothing but atleast now you know better and dont have a excuse if 10 years later you realize you did your body harm. go enjoy your mcdonalds. were not mad at you, we just feel bad but do what makes you happy. we give suggestions, we dont dicate like yall do to us.
Remember....Soylent Green is People....Would that be exempt on Mondays?
@ NJK85 ok so maybe your strong which i am also despite not eating meat as much as you do. im 6'1 180 pounds and a strong 180 that is. i dont need to run like you. i can be lazy and still be strong and in shape. i can run up and down and play basketball all day on the streets but some ppl just get to fatigue. i stay in shape cuz i dont eat junk or process food. but im also really healthy and never been to the doctors a day in my life like most americans have to. most americans are so obese they have to take a car everywhere. and not all but more then half the americans i see have a belly and some weight but dont look strong at all.
Some of the Conservatives here would do well to get a weekly shot of anti-psychotic medications to dampen the intensity of their paranoid delusions. Encouraging people to eat a healthy diet through a public campaign is not an infringement on your freedoms. If the best that you can come up with is what you imagine "will" happen, well... again, you need some medications. When people freak out over something that has not happened, it is a form of psychosis.
What's next L.A.? wave Communist flag day? It is none of your damn business what I eat. If I like it, or want to try something new, I will be damned if I have to deal with some damn bureaucrat telling ME what is good for me! I have news for you miss councilwoman: My Doctor is more qualified to tell me what I should be eating than you are, and he doesn't follow me around shaking his finger at me when I don't comply!
Fishless and no salad Lent coming soon! stay tuned
and again its not all americans but way to many, more then half or out of shape and have a belly. not even strong ppl. i look at all these CEO's and man not only are these guys obese but literally fat. they may get the ladies but these ladies must be disgusted in bed. these CEO are not good looking at all. you are what you eat. my parents are from india. we go every few years to india. i see probaly 1% overwight ppl. i come to america wat??? over 60% are obese. the hot girls in america know how to eat. but its so hard to find a attractive girls cuz so to many of them are obese. go around the world and you see hot girls all over the place. come to america they have a belly. but its not the girls, its the fellas that are the real overweight americans. in india we eat fresh food locally from the market. in america everything is processed, modified and food thats like 2 years old. then you have the meat of course. you are what you eat.
This is the dumbest thing in the world, if we want to improve our health we don't need some arrogant politician telling us what to do or even suggesting so. This is something we can do on our own.
For the politicians to be wasting their time on this stuff is a poignant example of government overstepping its bounds. It is also a direct insult to people's intelligence, how dumb do they think we are?
Unfortunately there are many arrogant self righteous liberals and control freaks who think that the average person has the IQ of a moron and they can dictate to people their viewpoints like they are god.
They can shove their arrogance up their .....
The government is NOT a nanny, we DON'T need to be babysat from cradle to grave by these arrogant liberals.
I don't live in CA. and I'm glad of it....but if I did I would tell Councilwoman Jan Perry and Councilman Ed Reyes that their "ONLY" job and the one they were elected to is to run the city business and not our personal lives.
Holy crap, who do these people think they are. And what are we letting them get away with......are we their sheep or cattle or their personal property? I have 4 words for people like them: MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!"
and you know what conservatives. there not even talking to you so quit complaing. they are talking to ppl who want to know better and need help. like me i didnt know any better and use to eat lot of process food and stuff and i wish i had someone to tell me and wish i can go back and never eat like i use to. so there telling the ppl to go meatless monday who want to. if you dont want to then move on. there not dictating you like you dictate others. so quit being a hyrpocrite and selfish. this message isnt for you even. its for ppl who need and want to know better and get help. your just being selfish and making this about you. your probaly just mad ur coroporations will lose business.
In this case, what you don't know WILL hurt you. Sounds like you've been ignorant about the health and environmental effects of eating meat for a long time, and probably don't have much time left anyway. Why don't you use your brain instead of your mouth and think for once.
I know a couple of vegans who are fat - one merely overweight and the other downright obese. Don't equate being a vegan or vegetarian with good health. Often, it's just the opposite, esp. for those vegans/vegetarians who proceed to substitute too many processed carbs for protein. Those who eat meat protein in moderation and are not overweight are probably the healthiest. Meat contains amino acids and other beneficial nutrients for cell growth and repair.
He!! with facing 4 more years of Obuma and his screw gang I cannot afford meat anyway. Socialism here we come, what I do in my home is none of the governments business as long as it is doing illegal drugs or hurting other people!!!!!!! I know they are trying to create more jobs for the mexicans.
It's the tree-hugging hippies who are at least trying to save this planet; it certainly won't be the marines.
why do so many officials fit right in with psychopaths...
funny, Mozzie, because I checked the biographies of some of the greatest Scientists in human history, and darn it.. not a single one was a vegetarian. Including Plato and Socrates...
What I did find, all the countries that primarily non-meat eating (like the beef worshipping India) is that they all are slaves to another country.
I find it almost sickening, that India parents can let their kids starve to death, while they give praise to the holy cow.
you forgot to tell people how you were AWAL because you suck your thumbs and wet the bed
Maybe people in L.A. should just eat their food stamps on mondays,
Mozzie.. go back to your pipe and leave the intelligent discussions to the clear minds. Tree hugging hippies are only going to force us into slaves for another.
The weaker they make us, the more others will see us as the prize... actually read your history. Without the Marines, there will be no US, nor would there be a world worth fighting to protect.
And you can thank a Marine for the ability to think that way. Otherwise, you might be speaking German or Japanese now...
what is your favorite burger, Ill send you one.
Don't worry about the meat. We got Obamacare now.
Unclean and Hateful Bird
No, it's not. It's just a waste of the time we pay these people for. Is it really too much to expect our elected official to just do the job they're actually hired to do? Maybe if they've actually done that job you can forgive them for getting side tracked but any simplton can see that the city council in LA has more important issues to be addressing. It's the equivelent of the captain of the Titanic warning his passengers not to run on deck.
This is a flat no....
why: because you need to see what food stamps can buy....redbull at circle K (gas station)!!
Stop targeting people not on welfare...you are so see-thou with your agenda against anyone who registered other than "follower". Party affiliation: Follower/kool-aid-drinker
HOLY COW i JUST FIGURED IT OUT.....BAN KOOL-AID!!!- for this country has been poisoned by it

If you think only conservatives try to force their beliefs on others you should avoid calling anyone a hypocrite lest you make one of yourself. Last time I checked it wasn't a conservative telling the people in NY what size soda they are allowed to drink nor was it conservatives who were trying to tell pharmacists what sorts of medicine they should be forced to stock. Liberals are just as bad as conservatives and anyone who doubts it is a fool.
Can't wait for the meat police to show up at my door and arrest me for eating meat on Mondays.
It's rather ironic, really, when you look at what anthropologists have discovered about early man. People were healthiest when their diet consisted of almost pure meat and fat with plant intake being what they could gather from the wild. People started getting all types of ailments once massive quantities of grain was introduced into their diets.
I've tried to go a whole day without eating meat. The result was disastrous. I was hungry all day (never mind eating legumes, nuts and all manner of healthy types of plant products) and ended up with low blood sugar to boot. I'll stick with my six to eight ounces of meat a day with plenty of veggies and a little fruit on the side. It's what works best for my body. YMMV.
@Larry Stauth: Tsk-tsk. Your comments are just too ignorant for me to waste my time responding to.
Backcountry164
NY seems pretty conservative to me. bloomberg has some of the same stuff as arizona does inclduing the NYPD and racial profile of muslims. why are you blaming liberals for that? bloomberg leans to the right. but anyway yeah thats what we as a country of become, 2 parties that are out of control but the conservatives on here wont admit that.
Opinionated Smurf
wow u cant go a whole day without eating meat? there are so many tasty foods how hard can it be? i mean sure a cheesesteak or nuggets taste good but thats all that you eat? what about rice, black beans, corn and avacados (guac)? or quac and chips? or peanut butter jelly sandwich with patato chips? or spagetti or my favorite meal i eat everyday almost. rice with spinich, eggplant fried patatoes, sqush and curry all mix together. or something or all the spices and recipes to make delicous meals with rice? or chick peas curry. i can go on and on. you gotta be kidding me. some ppl dont even eat meat a day in thier life and eat delicious foods. so many snacks i can make too. growing food and eating fresh is much better then that facory farm meat filled with anitboitcs, pink slime. its not even organic meat.
You're right Smurf. The human gut lacks the bacteria to properly break down the cell walls of grains and coniferous vegetables, like broccoli. That's why grains and broccoli have to be cooked or lightly steamed. It helps to break down the strong plant cellular wall. One of the main causes of Crone's disease and gluten intolerance. When herbivores eat plants, they have bacteria and most have more than one stomach to allow the bacteria to break down this cellular structure providing the animals with it's vitamins and minerals. The herbivores also take in soil that provides them with many micro minerals and vitamins. When the carnivore or omnivore(humans) eat the meat of the herbivore, they benefit from the work of the herbivore's digestive system. However, this doesn't mean we should eat nothing but meat. We're omnivores, and eating nice green leafy veggies full of water content is very good for us and helps keep the colon clean. Raw dairy also helps keep our digestive tract in good health providing much needed bacteria, that can only come from raw dairy and fermented foods. Humans have cooked meat for thousands of years, not because we can't digest raw meat or chew raw meat, but because meat can spoil fast. And by cooking or smoking the meat, it kills bad bacteria and helps to keep the meat longer. In fact over cooking meat, to the point it's charred can be bad for you. The charred part is carcinogenic.
The biggest health problem from eating meat, isn't the act of eating meat, but the quality of meat North American's eat. Corn is toxic to cows, yet it's fed to them to make them plump. The FDA has a toxic point the cows can get to and once at that point the factory farmer kills the toxic cow. The FDA protects the large corporate farmers and food manufacturers, not the consumer. Cow are meant to eat grasses, not grain. Chickens aren't meant to eat corn either, and they're pumped full of antibiotics, so that they can be kept in poor conditions. Dairy cows are many times kept confined, over bred, and pumped full of hormones rBGH, to keep them lactating. This causes infections in the utters, and this problem is one reason why the FDA forces pasteurization. Never mind the fact that pasteurized milk is dead milk, lacking in essential enzymes and good floral gut bacteria. Since Obama has been president, the FDA and other government agencies have been cracking down hard on raw milk and raw cheese producers and distributors. Americans are real free aren't we?
If LA wanted to promote health and environmental issues, than they should have decreed Monday's to be Organic Meat Mondays. Emphasizing grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free meat. That would help spread awareness and may help organic ranchers in California, financially.
RC, you do know that grains(pasta), rice etc break down into sugars, right? Did you know that cancer cells can't live without sugar? Just saying... I'm by no means advocating, not eating veggies. However I am saying eating too much of grains can be very unhealthy. You mention potato chips. Want to talk about what's making America fat, it's things like potato chips, french fries and soda. It's sugar, sugar, sugar!!! Potatoes have little nutritional value, except for the skin. And eating non organic veggies is just as bad as eating non organic meat. And there you have it. It's the nutritional value of the food that counts.
Just because there are people who haven't eaten meat a day in their lives, doesn't mean that people who eat meat daily are bad. That's just not logical at all. Most people on this planet who do not eat any meat at all aren't doing it because they are environmentally aware or health conscience. It's because they have no access to meat, through the lack of money to purchase it or the lack of availability. And many times those cultures eat a lot of bugs. Or it's a religious thing. You don't have to travel to know what goes on in the world, books and magazines can help enlighten one plenty. Of course seeing things first hand is always good, but not necessarily more educating. If you don't understand fully what you're looking at, than you're really not much the wiser.
What will people do when they run out of personal freedoms and no longer have to think for themselves.
Give the bleeding heart control freak liberals a couple more years and no one will be eating meat unless its poached, because no onewill be able to afford it along with everything else you will be forced to be without. but you might have insurance that will cover nothing. better keep those pets plump. if you can't handle the truth collapse this statement. in two years America will be hanging the out of business sign. compliments of the enlightened ones. like the bible says get the log out of your own eye before you worry about the splinter in mine.
Happy birthday Marines, Navy was yesterday, tomorrow Veterans day, its a three day holiday, complete with football, time to get the Barron of beef in the oven.
People need to be educated not controlled! some of you people don't know the meaning of freedom, they think it's there right to impose their will on others, take what they want when they want, throw morality out the window and do as you please, no wonder the plan is to sterilize the planet. ya there is a little sarcasm.
@thinkstraight By the way Obama has to hire a whole new team, what do you bet they will all be hardcore socialist from his inner circle. are they all quitting him or did he tell them to go, Clinton said America will be rebuilt from the ground up that means getting rid of what we have to make room for the new. what we are looking at is more then socialismits spelled with a C, we are going 2 trillion in the hole every year it won't be long and the system will collapse as planed by our leader. just remember the collapse was voted on by the dems, Obamas plan is working inflation is skyrocketing, America as we know it will cease. the bubble broke on two other occasions the revolution and the civil war, history will give you a idea of what is to come. the problem today is the population.
Kate Indigo
listen you do make many points in your post and defintley prop 37 failure was huge now gentically modified foods will continue to be most foods in grocery stores. but i didnt say eat grains, pasta, patato chips, fried food everyday. there are so many foods. eating meat is ok but everyday cant be healthy. espically the meat that is in america. organic meat is so rare to find out here. its not just americans eat meat, they eat process meat from growth hormones, antibotics, the meat has pink slime and all kinds of stuff and not even fresh meat. its not fair to the kids they are being fed this stuff.
I have to side with some of strident, conservative voices, many of whom are still recovering from this past Tuesday's disappointment.
For a city council to pass a lunatic announcement of this sort, there had to have been a sudden drop in the oxygen content of city hall. While I recognize that too much red meat is unhealthy, if I lived in L.A., I'd be sure to have a huge hamburger for lunch every Monday, and a large steak for dinner.
What arrogance on the part of L.A.'s city council.
Meat kills people and destroys the environment. Well, the way we do it in America anyway... I'm all for it!
Ok so lot's of fact-averse people living in ignorance don't know how bad the meat industrial complex is damaging their health - or they don't care - but it remains a FACT. Go ahead and celebrate your defiance (of a suggestion not to eat meat on ONE day) by eating a slime-burger and enjoy your poor health! I don't care, but just like with smoking people will someday face reality and start being responsible with their diets. Until that day I'll enjoy the comic relief of people defying science by eating garbage - wow you really are showing everyone how smart you are!
When I was young we raised our own food Dairy, meat and produce we ate lots of meat, three times a day we never had these health problems people have today, its not the food its what the government has done to it before you buy it that is killing people. if you can raise your own its worth it. people need to realize its the chemicals and the processing that is bad not the item its self its what the government allows/demands that is bad. the system is broken. right now the food you buy that has been processed in any way is bad for you not just the meat. that council woman is out of line and off track she should do her homework before telling others what to do, and its none of her business to tell the individual what to do but she could look into the real problem and do something to fix that, except that would require intelligence and she may be lacking in that department. its obvious she is addicted to the kool Aid and likes the blinders. the kool aid goes so well with pot and it makes a person feel smart, some times to the point they actually believe they are, the blinders well they protect you from seeing what is really happening. its a liberal thing and it allows one to become enlightened. forward lemmings this way to the beach we'll have a swim before dinner.
@rc-4121998
Could you please point to the posts where liberals ARE admitting that? Because from what I see BOTH sides pretty much just point their fingers at the other. Sort of like you've done here.
You should care because just as with smoking, we will and are spending billions more on healthcare for the people who are ruining their health by eating (or smoking) carcinogens. And health insurance rates go up for all, not just the carnivores.
rc,
I completely agree with you. You mentioned those products, potato chips, as if they were a better alternative than meat. Maybe you didn't mean it that way, but that's how it came out. BTW, avocados are my absolute fav!!
I agree that organic grass fed beef, and hormone free chicken and pork can be hard to find, and it's definitely not cheap. And the outrageous Farm Act bill will make organic beef harder to get and even more expensive. Everything this government does promotes unhealthy farming and ranching practices, and does all it can to cripple organic farmers. That's the FDA and USDA for you. Revolving doors, revolving doors. Need I say more?...Monsanto!! Man I can't stand that corporation. Europe on the other hand has banned GMOs and has strongly stuck with it's more traditional farming and herding practices. However, Europe has set into place laws that make it illegal to or difficult to get supplemental vitamins and minerals. They are trying to pass similar legislation in Canada and America. It seems we might agree more than we disagree. But You must understand that for a people to be free, it means they must have the choice to make bad decisions. Even if those decisions impact others. Cause no choice only impacts the chooser. -Butterfly Effect-
These FuchTards in the left coast really think that they should rule all. Maybe they should pay all the debt they owe before trying to tell the working person how to live.
I don't really see what everyone is upset about. Declaring a meatless Monday day is pretty much the same as declaring an anti porn week or a Pi day. These really don't have much meaning and you can pretty much ignore it.
I need a T-bone. I've already fired up the grill!
The only thing I really see this doing is people that are vegetarians will feel special for not eating meat. People that like meat and not vegetarians will feel special about eating meat on that day and complaining about the vegetarians. The rest of us will forget about it the next week when the new set of shows comes on.
Interesting. Nowhere in that article that I read the word requirement. The City is not forcing anyone to give up meat.
Doesn't matter. The paranoid conservative mind sees it as a First Step in a Nanny State process!
Oh, my God! They're coming for our weapons and our civil rights! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH! (A little "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" speech: "Look, you fools, you're in danger! Can't you see?! They're after you! They're after all of us! Our wives, our children, everyone! THEY'RE HERE, ALREADY! YOU'RE NEXT!")
And yet, these are the same people berating their fellow Americans for being overweight and being too lazy to eat right. Which means, with less meat in your diet. Duh.
RC wrote: my parents are from india. we go every few years to india. i see probaly 1% overwight ppl. i come to america wat??? over 60% are obese.
Wow, I can't believe you would even bring up India in this discussion. There are 230 million starving people in India. Many children are severely malnourished and there are many starvation deaths. The government can't even cope with the food problem there. If that's your idea of a healthy country with beautiful, slim women, you are kinda perverse.
Yeah, and I am old enough to remember when the government first required automakers to put seat belts in cars, they kept claiming "no one is forcing you to use them, it just gives you a choice".
There are literally hundreds of other examples. Some communities are banning smoking in multifamily dwellings, including condos that people supposedly own. New York City banned large soft-drink cups, San Francisco banned McDonald's Happy Meals, and is trying to ban the sale of pets including goldfish.
Today's crop of liberals make a mockery of the word "liberal" as they try to control every facet of people's lives.
As gay marriage becomes legal state by state, small family business's are being forced to chose between participating in ceremonies that are against their religious beliefs or closing their businesses to avoid being sued.
And therefore, those who promoted seat belts in vehicles were "liberals," then? Well, God bless the liberals!
you can have my steak , and my gun, when your pry them both from my cold dead fingers....
Sure. Be happy to do that for you. And when would that likely be?
RC- My job requires me to make my body do things most dont have to. So its fine that you eat lean and your heathly. I agree that the US has alot of lazy arse people but dont through all of us in that bunch. If what you do works for you cool. But come on, a city has nothing better to do then come up with something called Meatless Mondays? Thats not what they are in those seats for you know.
Mozzie- Remember that comment the next time something really bad happens and you see us boarding planes and boats to go protect this country. We're here to protect the US.
If only their lawmakers could pass a bill for "blunt-less Fridays." The guys in New York can no longer buy a 42 oz drink at 7-Eleven - even if it's a diet soda. I think they should a camera shot of Big Bird trotting up and down the streets of LA shouting, "don't eat me, don't eat me....."
Yeah, yeah. That's only 'cause if you were smart enough, you'd have a job that the taxpayers don't have to pay for.
You're talking about saving a country, I'm talking about saving this PLANET. Which is more important, in your opinion?
RC followed by numbers
"like me i didnt know any better and use to eat lot of process food and stuff and i wish i had someone to tell me and wish i can go back and never eat like i use to"
you "didn't know better" ? , do you live in a cave? , oh , my bad , moms basement , sorry
lefties sure did get left out of the conversations with their parents , your parents are to blame if you "didn't know better" , maybe they should have spent a little more time at home with you rather than hanging out at the "progressive" lefty get togethers at the neighbors house
Mozzie
after perusing your posts , the word "ignorant" should only appear in them as an accurate self portrait
India....hahahahahaha....it's the most diseased country on the planet , the Ganges is their life line and it is poluted beyond repair
"In the dry season the Ganges limps into town, dark with sewage and industrial waste. Pollution is heavy even at the height of the monsoon. The Yamuna arrives burdened by raw sewage from New Delhi, some 1,900 million untreated liters (502 million gallons) each day."
hahaha...their "religious icon" is a septic tank , I wouldn't vist that shyte hole , especially to get some of RC's curry laced turd bowl
"Coliform—an indicator of human and animal waste—reached a jaw-dropping average of 15,000 mpn* per 100 milliliters at Salori in September 2010, falling to 8,875 mpn/100ml by the time it reached the confluence a few miles away.
The government limit for coliform in rivers is 500 mpn/100ml. At no time in 2010 were coliform levels at the confluence, where millions bathe each year, lower than 5,500 mpn/100ml."
ouch , entire nation of boneheads , maybe RC should head on back and clean up his own doorstep first , then worry about "pink slime"
Thank you for reading my posts, but I'm somewhat curious: why would you say that?
Blah blah blah, you're suspended for a day for violating #1 of the Code of Honor.
Athendoe: Since you choose to avoid me and refuse to answer my question, I must assume that you know that you have no idea of what you are accusing me of, but just wanted to be as obnoxious as you can because you are anonymous. All of my information is documented, and if you’d like to debate, I’d be happy to do so. Please know that face to face, you are absolutely no match for me. In fact, it is YOU who are the ignorant one. That doesn’t necessarily mean you are STUPID, it just means that you lack enough education (6th grade level, actually) to know what you are talking about, troll.
Mozzie- To me, my family and friends matter the most. I will give my last breath fulfilling my oath to protect this country so you/ and others like you can go about your days trying to save the planet. If me and others like me weren't doing what we do you wouldn't have the freedoms you have today. So if you dont think you should pay taxes because you think we are not needed dont. Let me know how that turns out for you. Each of us play a part in this world, my part is a necessary evil. And as for smart enough, I graduated with a 4.0 and scored an 82 on my ASVAB.
NJK: This is the comment from you that I objected to: No you damn tree hugging hippy.
I wondered why you were unwilling to get your point across without being offensive to lots of other people. It is possible. That’s the only problem I had with your post. I hate rudeness; but I will give it back if I get it.
I am willing put the whole thing to rest on civil terms, and sincerely wish you a good life. Everyone responds to kindness. . .
This is just one of those topics that has no place on a city council doc. It was truely a waste of time. Now, cleaner eating is a huge issue in the US and needs to be addressed for our children. I guess a civil disagreement about ways to the endstate.
oh you have got to be kidding me. people are starving all over the world and you declare "meatless mondays"? the day the government tries to push me to follow a diet will be the day that i renounce my citizenship. i'm an athletic, 5'9", 125 woman. i'm going to eat whatever i want, whenever i want. i wouldn't give up in-n-out burger for all the money in the world.
I don't see anywhere in this initiative where they are trying to dictate what you can eat. They are trying to raise awareness of the health and environmental impacts of heavy meat consumption.
And you're right that there are 1 billion people who are malnourished. And they're are 1 billion people who are overweight. And did you know that nearly 100% of the arable land on the planet is currently in production - and there are only a few areas left in the world that can increase their crop yield (through fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation)?
We have almost reached the maximum food production capacity of the planet and yet we continue to increase our population. And it requires a tremendous amount more land/feed/water to produce one calorie of meat than plant foods.
A modest reduction in meat consumption can have a tremendous impact on our ability to address those "starving people all over the world" - and reduce environmental impacts as well.
Information. It's what's for dinner.
If your going to use the saving of meat consumption here to help the starving folks all over the wold then how the hell does that reduce environmental impact. Your just taking a resource and moving it around, not eliminating it which I would thing be needed to "reduce the carbon footprint" Pick one rational, you can't have 'em all because it doesn't make sense.
To really make a difference in the world's resources, we need to implement "Vasectomy Wednesday." Less people on the planet equals less consumers who are smoking, drinking, eating, buying vehicles, etc.
I agree, it almost makes me want to fly out to LA LA land and order a big fat steak on a Monday. It would have made a little more sense to do it on a friday, because during Lent they would inadvertently have gotten some participation from the Catholics...am I right?
The amount of food that is thrown away would feed the hungry. Should we send them all of our garbage? The hungry are hungry because they don't have money. If I lived in L.A. I would be angry that this is what the city council spends there time working on.
I hope the Gay Community is alright with this!
Lee, not sure what the gay community has to do with this. Didn't realize sexual orientation plays a part in what you choose to eat, unless that's your thing.
StandupandJackoff you first on leaving the planet.
Too bad the world is so over-populated. If we could kill off half the population, we could solve this problem.
you really didn't get that? you gotta be kiddin me.
another one ...take your own advise
then what feed em to the other half perhaps?...well ok... as long as its not Monday.
Did you read "needaplan" above? That liberal vegetarian wacko slipped up and let the cat out of the bag.
It's subtle, but he said it.....POPULATION CONTROL!!!!
He want's to take away your meat and now dictate how many babies. Ahhhh, now you know why liberals support birth control and abortion.....killing off the surplus population.
Wow....The New World Order is coming.
Standup, we need to have "Liberal Vascetomy Wednesday"! This is the only way we can both reduce the population and reduce the stupidity we are forced to deal with from our "public servants"!
Yes, people are starving all over the world because we grow food to feed consumption animals instead of people. It has been proven that every human on the planet could be well fed if we stopped eating meat. Instead, 10,000 children a day die from starvation on this planet. No one is forcing the issue, but if you actually studied the issue you see the validity behind it.
IRrationaloutlook, why is it that whenever libs want to argue a point they start with, "If it would just save one life wouldn't it be worth it?" The reason that thousands of children die each day from starvation is not because we eat meat it is because they probably have socialist governments who take care of themselves first and say "screw you" to their own people! This is the falacy of socialism in which the weakest members of society are ignored in order to reward the "special people" who run the government. Trust me, we will see the same thing happen during and after the coming collapse of the U.S. because the producers have all been forced out or just stopped creating!
Before initiating something like this, she should have applied to Obama and tyhe EPA crowd.
The EPA is trying to stop all CO2 emissions in all forms. No one has ever told them what plants require from the atmosphere.
There may be less plants worldwide if Obama. the EPA and their controller, the New World Order has their way. It won't be instant, but it will start to drive ALL food prices up and starving more people.
Next year, it will be Meal-less Mondays.
Not eating meat would keep 10,000 kids from starving every day? That's a very naive viewpoint.
10,000 kids a day die because of other people, other people's beliefs (like yours) and other people's actions directly affecting the political and social realms they live in. Saying that if an american quits eating meat will change the political climate in a starving childs world is utter nonsense.
Alot of the commentary just seems to reconfirm that people enjoy bickering and arguing with one another and getting worked up about absolutely nothing. I certainly honor and respect the military but it doesn't have much to do with the article. I don't particularly believe people in Los Angeles are legislating socialism or that the city will be abandoned by the millions leaving it an urban wasteland and certainly everyone should eat whatever they choose. Officials try to set examples. Its kind of what they do. I don't think anybody is legislating forced vegetarianism. It was, I think a relatively minor news item simply outlining it would be a positive thing to be more aware of our nutrition and how it effects or health. Then the ranting commentaries begin.
You people know that cows existed in the wild before they were ranched right? And there were also bison that roamed the great plains, ate tons of wild grasses and farted all day long. And there were wild horses out there eating wild grasses, and deer and elk and moose and sheep and goats etc... All these animals existed before domestication and still exist in the wild. In India they might not eat the cow, but it's still there eating and farting. Not only that but back in the previous Ice Age(even before then and after) there were gigantic grass eaters, Mammoths, that roamed all over North America eating and farting. Humans fart on average 13 times a day. I'd say it's probably even more for vegetarians. It's the methane(hence the flatulence comments) that concerns environmentalists. Do you think that if people stop eating meat those species of animals wouldn't exist? Or do environmentalists plan on making them extinct or near extinct? If those animals did roam the wild, then land would need to be kept wild for them to live and thrive, so that would mean even less land to cultivate. Well that's if environmentalists suffered the cows, chickens, and pigs to live. Kinda like how the US government went and slaughtered thousands of beautiful wild horses?!!! Sickos!!
You do also know that the whole concept of over population and the lack of food to feed everyone is hundreds of years old, right? His name was Thomas Malthus. He said that there were too many people, mostly peasants, and that they were breeding too much. He said eventually population would supersede the availability of food. He gave it 50 years. He even used math to come up with this prediction. This was back in the 1700's. And he wasn't talking about Africa, he was talking about England and Europe. Well he was wrong, just as environmentalists are wrong. He was really just full of hate for the poor and the masses. Some say he was the father of eugenics. To them poor people shouldn't be allowed to breed to much, cause they became a burden on the environment and society. He also said nobles shouldn't have too many kids, cause then their wealth was distributed too much through the children. He said to have one or two keeps to keep the wealth more concentrated. You libs are a part of something evil and sinister, and you don't even know it. You eat up the eugenics propaganda. Did you know that the best way to curb population growth is not through abortion or sterilization, but through prosperity? Studies show that the more prosperous a society/people are they less children they have. You want to help the starving in 3rd world countries? Don't grow GMO corn and soy and send it to them in the tons. No. Go over to those countries, show them how to use irrigation and help install systems. Teach people how to farm. Have the UN troops keep watch over these farmers so the rival tribes and despotic leaders don't come and pillage the crops and murder the farmers. Most the time people in Africa are starving because of internal conflicts, not because Americans eat meat. Aaarrrgggg... Take time to think out these illogical arguments before spouting them off like a parrot.
@Kate Indigo
With the irony being that as fewer people eat meat the cost will go down thus prompting people to eat more meat.
@rationaloutlook
And thanks for sharing your "proof" with the rest of us. Do you really expect anyone to just take your word for it?
Oh and BTW many if not all environmentalists have a problem with farming as well. I'm not talking about the pesticides, I'm talking about soil erosion. Humans have been farming for thousands of years, and in the last 70 years or so American and even Canadian farming practices have stripped our soil of vital nutrients, macro and micro. So you know what? You can eat veggies all day long, but if you don't supplement your vitamins and minerals, then you're no healthier than an over weight person. Most diseases are not from what you eat per say, but from the lack of vital nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Eating meat has nothing to do with it. It's the quality of the meat. Cows aren't meant to eat corn! It's toxic to them, but it fattens them up! Cows are meant to eat grass, not grains. If we went to an organic grass fed form of meat then many problems health wise and environmental would be solved. What cracks me up is that Prop 37 in California didn't pass, which would have forced companies to label their products as having GMO's in it. If the city council wanted to do something environmental and health friendly they could have legislated that companies in LA label GMOs on the food.
There are so many problems with North Americas food supply, it's scary. Aspartame that the body can't break down and turns into formaldehyde in your fat cells. Aspartame, which is found in diet soda, and most all "sugar free" products is scientifically known to cause obesity. It's really in almost everything even gum. Or how about GMOs that have been shown to cause fertility problems and cancer in lab rats. Or what about corn derived sugar called High Fructose Corn Sugar. That stuff wreaks havoc on the body and the immune system, diabetes anyone? Did you know that eating too much of grains can be a health hazard and many people have a gluten intolerance? This can cause Crones disease. Grains promote the production of Omega 6 fats, which can block the body's ability to produce and even absorb Omega 3 fats. Soy has a lot of estrogen in it and can cause hormonal imbalances, especially in men.
Meat gives carnivores and omnivores(humans) essential vitamins that the herbivore eats, and it's body breaks down into vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B 12. Did you know that humans can't digest grains or coniferous veggies, like broccoli? Talk about flatulence....
If you want to talk about health and eating healthy, then maybe you should read a little more.
Kate,
Humans can digest grins and broccoli (cruciferous....I think your spell checker changed that to coniferous on you) just fine. I have LESS gas than my meat eating friends and I eat 45-50 grams of fiber a day. You get used to it. B12 doesn't come from meat...it comes from bacteria. Meat has lots of bacteria and so can be a good source of B12. But most people us B12 supplements anyway. And many older people get B12 shots because we lose our ability to absorb B12 from our food as we age.
No study proves soy in it's natural form is dangerous. WHOLE grains are good for you...processed is not. Whole foods in general are better.
ok have fun with in and out burger but then you wonder why your ugly. have fun working 8 hours a day. you are what you eat. its one thing to eat meat, its another thing to stuff your body with that disgusting fast food aka factory farm food. belly women.
kaviaq,
Yes it was my spell checker, thank you. Humans can digest grains easier IF they're cooked or steamed, which breaks down the tough cellular wall, and even then it can be hard on our digestive tract. And I never said the body can't digest it, I just said it can be unhealthy, and it can. Grains do not break down well, and that is why fiber is used to help clean the colon walls. It's the undigested fibers basically scraping the colon clean on the way out. Nothing makes me belch more than broccoli. Oh man, I tell you... But I don't like the flavor of cooked or steamed broccoli, so I eat it raw. Meat does not bloat me like legumes or broccoli. You might each that much fiber, but is it all coming from grains, or is some of from veggies? And just because you feel good doesn't mean you're not deficient in a mineral or vitamin. Humans are individuals and some can tolerate things better than others. B12 might come from bacteria, but it's the good bacteria from the herbivore gut, that I mentioned above. Hence, you eat the herbivore, you get the B12. Much like, you eat the fish, you get the Omega 3 straight up. Where as if you eat something like flax, you're body has to covert it to Omega 3 and if you have too much Omega 6 and 9 in your system it will block that conversion. BTW, why is it people lose the ability to absorb B12? It wouldn't be the lack of bonding agents(I mean vitamins here) to help carry it through the stomach walls would it? And where does that deficiency come from? What I mentioned in the post above comes from reading scientific studies posted on alternative health food sites(with links), like Dr. Mercola. It's not anecdotal evidence. And boy do Vegetarians and Vegans dislike Mercola, LOL. I have read plenty of studies that talk about how un-fermented soy or processed soy is in fact bad for you.
Wow, lost the argument and went straight for Ad Hominem attacks. Very clever. All in bold too. I have no idea who you're talking to. You're right though, eating factory farmed meat is unhealthy. It's the practices of the farming that is unhealthy, not meat per say. But We are supposedly living in a free country and if someone wants to eat a delicious In and Out burger, that's their prerogative. The best thing to do is to try and encourage people to take an interest in educating themselves about healthy food. And I don't mean by having the "State" make any declarations. It's not their job to do that. It's up to neighbors, friends and family who are concerned about the health and well being of their loved ones and community. Throwing around accusations and insults aren't going to get you anywhere. Neither is dictating a lifestyle going to help people be healthier either. People will just rebel. And if you're not eating local organically grown grains and vegetables, than you are what you eat also, a Monsanto supporting, pesticide filled, wax covered person. Do you think that looks pretty? -Stores cover their fruits and veggies with wax to help keep them longer and looking pretty.-
Gina, sounds great. Since grain-fed meat tastes best, I'll take a cut, cooked medium-rare, thank you, off the first vegetarian willing to sacrifice themselves to your plan. BTW, you liberals are doing a great job reducing the population with your fondness for abortion; keep up the good work.
Nice to see the environmental nuts have joined forces with the animal rights nuts and 24/7 nanny state nuts to make LA even more Looney-Tuney (apologies to WB).
Sorry, but while I will always support intelligent use of our planet's resources, some of our resources are animal and I intend to continue to consume them, even on Mondays. The more garbage like "farm animals are contributing to Global Warming" (which I thought was all man's fault), I hear, the more suspicious I get of the motives of the Communists who took over the environmental movement 20 years ago and are using it to try and achieve their anti-democracy and anti-capitalist political goals (but not do a DAMN THING to actually help the environment) with the goal of an all-encompassing world-wide 24/7 nanny state.
The bacteria is in the soil. That's where herbivore got it. We probably could get enough that way, but we wash our veggies too well. And we do produce some in our gut too, just not enough to rely on. SOME people make enough....but who wants to risk being short when it causes brain damage!
Bell peppers make me gassy, but I eat tons of beans and broccoli with no ill effect.
Mostly vegetables, fruits and beans. I also eat whole grains like oats and quinoa. I usually have steel cut oats simmered in pumpkin puree for breakfast and a dish made from veggies, beans and quinoa for lunch...on work days anyway. I try to focus on the vegetables and fill in from there. Nothing "pulls it's weight" nutritionally like those dark leafy greens so I try to eat lots of kale, collards, mustard greens, spinach, etc.
True. But all my blood work is fantastic. I work for a diagnostics lab and every year they do an extensive blood workup on us (we get money off our health insurance for participating) so I have lots of hard numbers. The only thing I was low on this year was ferritin. But my iron in general was Ok (bad time of the month for checking my iron reserve levels...if you know what I mean). i haven't had my vitamin D level checked but since I work indoors and excercise indoors I assume it is low and take supplements. I also like to take an Omega 3 supplement (algae based...where the fish get it from). My eye doctor thinks it helps with dry eyes. It seems to work, although I could be imagining it.
Funny, most of the vegans I knwo DO like Mercola. Then again they think homeopathy works and oregano oil will cure their cold! Not sure why so many vegans are New Age loonies......at least in the Meet Up groups I've gone to. I had an argument with a guy who thinks he's a medium. *sigh*
From what I read it is the soy derivatives they put in processed foods that cause the problem. People eat tons of soy "products" without even knowing it. I eat tofu sometimes, or tempeh. I'm not big on "mock meats". I like seitan (wheat gluten) better and get most of my protein from beans, grains and vegetables. When I'm trying to build muscle (I like to lift weights) I sometimes add hemp or pea protein to my smoothies.
Ah, thanks for clarifying. I misunderstood. Yes, I wouldn't want to spend all day chewing raw grain. I doubt our evolutionary ancestors ate much grain, but then they didn't eat much meat either. Humans only got meat through scavenging until we came up with some pretty impressive weapons. Our natural defenses are pretty much nil (no claws or huge canines like carnivores). Also not too many people eat raw meat today either. Easier to digest when it's cooked.
ROFL So funny. The Conservatives think it is Ok to legislate what women can do with their bodies, but start swearing and crying that their freedoms are being taken away if anyone even SUGGESTS they eat healthier. Apparently the are iron(y) deficient!
@kaviaq, did I say I oppose abortion? I didn't even say anything about this ridiculous bit of Californianism, which I don't even care about since I don't live in California. My response was to that "sweetheart," Gina, who so flippantly suggested the solution to our problems is to kill off half the world's population. Her asinine comment deserved another so I obliged. Surely, you don't support her position, do you?
kaviaq,
I must say, I've enjoyed this discussion with you. :)
I must say, your breakfast sounds yummy. I tend to have a kale, spinach, ginger, grapefruit, or orange and lemon, with water and ice shake. It's very yummy and it gives tons of energy, but I'm hungry for lunch not long after. I'll eat whatever for lunch, but not much. It's my dinner habits that need to change. My husband and I usually eat way too late.
I currently don't know any vegans, although I did have vegan friends when I was younger. I was a vegetarian. I said that vegans don't like Mercola, cause so many vegan blogs I've come across haven't had a whole lot of nice things to say about him. Dr. Mecola believes that there are different types of people out there that require different types of diets. Some need a more meat/protein based diet, where as others need a more vegetable fruit diet. And there are those that need a good balance. I'm more a balance person. Which suits my personality, cause I strive for balance in all things in my life. I don't think it's vegans that are new agers, but new agers that tend to be vegan. hahaha
Ah, I didn't even understand what she was getting a so I just ignored it. Sorry if I misunderstood (I'm off today!) But I have heard Conservatives ranting over stuff like that.....so afraid someone will even suggest something like a waiting period for buying a gun, but supporting waiting periods and forced intravaginal ultrasounds for women seeking an abortion.
I didn't like his website because he is always selling something. And although the idea that people need different diets has been proposed a lot lately (like D'Adamo's "Blood type diet"), no one seems to have bothered doing any studies on it. They just state it and then try to sell you something. D'Adamo gets on my nerves. He COULD have done a study to look into whether different diets have differing effects on health in people with different blood types....but just skipped to the part where people buy his book and he makes money. Snake oil salesman.
Me too!
Mmmmm, sounds good.....and refreshing.
Could be! Even at a table full of vegans I was STILL the odd one out! They were quite horrified that I would question ANY kind of alternative medicine But I question EVERYTHING. I'm a natural born skeptic. I want to see the evidence. I don't trust drug companies and regular doctors anymore than I do alternative medicine. I drive doctors nuts refusing prescriptions. That is why my eye doctor suggested Omega 3 for my dry eyes....because I turned down Restasis. I think they should mention something like Omega 3 FIRST before suggesting I drip chemicals into my eyes!!
Wow--all the comments I've read so far are VERY INTERESTING.....:)
Personally, I have no problem with LA making good health suggestions. In light of Bloomberg's 16 OZ fiasco, I can see why people get paranoid about even suggestions coming from any government source(what was Bloomberg thinking, that people would NOT start buying multiple 16 ouncers just to get around that silly law?) Our nation does need more education on good health habits, seeing as a large % of our population is overweight (pun intended). Yes, we all have the right to eat whatever we want, it is each individuals choice. Lets just be sure it's an informed choice.
BTW, my hubby and I hunt, and fish, and have been having at least one vegetarian dinner per week for quite a while now--by our own choice. And we have a fairly big back yard where we grow a lot of veggies, fruit, even a little corn. Proposition 37 did not pass, which does not surprise me--just more proof that we live in a 'let the buyer beware' world these days. I prefer heirloom varieties of vegies, which is a good way to avoid GMO's
They must have regular contests in LA to see who can come up with the most idiotic ideas. I suspect idiots from all over the country migrate to LA to compete.
It will be interesting to see what moronic ideas the idiots will propose next. Knowing them, we won't have to wait too long.
A good retirement city for Bloomberg, he should feel right at home.
justathought, thanks for the one reasonable comment among the rants.
what a crock!

PUT TOGETHER IN MORNING GREAT MONDAY EVENING MEAL!
tried about the same recipe on last nights roadkill..yummy........
Here we go again, cow farts are bad for the ozone.
tankie
just dont tell HER that ....less ya want a black eye......
I find this article so silly. The Catholic Church has had a meatless day-Friday for years. It is only lately that is observed only during lent. I remember eating grilled cheese, tuna and of course pizza every Friday of my young life. So why Monday?????
History-255...That proves it...Govt is forcing religion on people. But, because they're atheists, they couldn't use Friday...so they chose Monday.
Liberals - To the Bat Cave.
Paws93 you are wrong about liberals being atheists! They are the worst kind of "Religious Fanatics", they are Humanists. Humanists believe that the will of the "enlightened" should be forced upon the "great unwashed" through edict and regulation. Meatless Monday is just the first of many attempts to legislate the "uneducated" peoples actions.
I wonder how much $$$ the health insurance co.s are shelling out to" our "govt to tell us what we can eat on a monday. Makes me @!$%#in sick .Are they gonna make their employee's eat @!$%#in lettuce for dinner? God bless the new America.
This Meatless Monday stuff is going to put a dent on the areas quality adult escort services.....in order to make money, these women depend on and live for by getting meat and vast quantities of it. I guess that they will have to make up the differences working on the other days of the week.
Its not the health insurance companies that are trying to force these eating habits on us. Libs like Michelle Obama are trying to push their beliefs on us and the intelligensia for these socialists are trying to force us to get by with less so that they will have more for themselves! In the USSR the ruling class had everything and the average citizen had to wait in line for everything from tasteless meat to toilet paper. And I do know about what I speak! My in-laws are former high-level Soviet officials and they saw this happen personally! They are totally anti-socialism and also anti-Obama! Learn from history or you will be bound to repeat it!
Dan M
your Humanist take is spot on , but the lefty "critical thinkers" won't understand it
Dan M
I have a customer that is ex Soviet military and after Odictator was he elected he said and I quote " I left the Soviet Union to get away from this"
"Meatless Monkeys"... what's next Boneless Badgers... Skinless Sharks perhaps? I'm darn glad that I don't live in Caliphornya.
It's not like it's a law. Lighen up. It's just a city-wide push to get people to fit into Southwest Airlines seats.
That being said... anyone for Sizzler?
I just don't want to pay the bills for the idiots in Caliphonya. Vote secession and keep our 15th largest 10th strongest world economy for us.
Standup, it's not a law.... YET! The liberals believe in baby steps to get what they want. They are like the Chinese who believe that change can happen over hundreds of years, not like Americans.
Lord - You spelled California wrong. It's Azatlan!!!
yup with the people they put in office they deserve what they get
When I first read this headline, my immediate thought was of how silly this Meatless Monday resolution was. But after only a little bit of further thought, I realized that the resolution is simply a way of getting people to think about their respective diets, which is NOT a bad idea.
In general, we Americans DO tend to eat too much - of everything. And we definitely eat too much of those tasty things that we KNOW are not particularly healthful.
So why NOT try something different once in a while? Why not make an adventure out of eating a wildly vegetarian meal in lieu of the usual steak dinner? Why not a salad instead of the stew? Why not fresh fruit instead of the chips? Why not do something different for a change?
...and by the way, the reason so many people don't like okra is that they overcook it!
Place fresh or frozen whole okra into a saucepan of water; heat it up.
WHEN THE WATER BOILS, THE OKRA IS DONE!!!! NO FURTHER COOKING!!!
REMOVE THE OKRA FROM THE HOT WATER. The okra will be nutty-crunchy, without being slimey!
(You're welcome)
Another country heard from:
In our modest (30x20) garden plot in SW Mississippi, we grow okra every summer. It is delicious eaten raw, plucked straight from the stalk. Try it sometime.
Pickled okra is darned good, too.
pickeled oprah?.......oh okra......nevermind....
Fine you think about your diet and start by controlling how USDA food programs are spent. Snickers bars and soda are not a balanced diet.
No, this isn't just a way to make people think about their diets--it's an irresponsible promotion of misinformation about diet as well as being a "soft" way to try to sneak in further control of people's lives by disguising it as being "voluntary" and as being somehow a good idea. One of the biggest problems in the diets of many women is insufficient high-quality protein--going vegetarian is NOT the healthy way to correct that. The biggest problem with meat in our culture is not the meat itself--it is the way we prepare it. Too much beef, for instance, is consumed as fast-food burgers.
The real problem with diet negatively impacting American health isn't meat--it's refined sugars. The foods clogging the health industry are soda pop and candy bars. Instead of national health care, what we need is a surcharge on health care for folks who have literally eaten themselves to death with junk food. This is a free country--we should be able to eat what we want to eat--but with freedom comes responsibility. Part of that is a responsibility to take care of our own health--and I'll have my moderately-sized steak, thank you kindly, and forego the pop and candy, so that I can stay healthy!
BMette - -
Why not go play with yourself - in the street?
Thanks BMette,
I've been wondering how to cook okra.
BMette - this is not an attempt to encourage people to "think" about anything; the goal here is to dictate WHAT our thoughts and opinions should be. Last I checked, the government is not supposed to tell us what our opinions should be. I would bet 20 dollars that you consider yourself to be "pro-choice" because abortion is a matter of private decision making. What do you think your diet is? Oh, I don't know, maybe an issue of private decision making . . . Here's a "suggestion" BMette - remove your head from your a**.
J. Howard - 1779114:
Oh, no, no, no!!! If I were to play with myself - in the street - as you suggest, I might get run over by a 16-wheel semi-trailer truck, and then I would be DEAD! And you wouldn't want THAT to happen now, would you?
If California wants to be our Nanny how about making Mondays a day of "Eat less and exercise more" because being overweight has nothing to do with eating meat, it has to do with lazy people and their dependent on the government. And since the government wants to tell us what we can and cannot eat they need to make a rule that food stamp recipients cannot buy junk food.
(Kaviaq: Thanks for the laugh!).
Here's some some advice for all of you out there who are up in arms about the government's diabolical attempt to take over our minds and dictate our food choices:
Place fresh or frozen whole okra into a saucepan of water; heat it up.
WHEN THE WATER BOILS, THE OKRA IS DONE!!!! NO FURTHER COOKING!!!
REMOVE THE OKRA FROM THE HOT WATER. The okra will be nutty-crunchy, without being slimey!
(You're welcome)
The USA is a free country. It is not illegal to eat yourself to death. It is the arrogance of the liberal, I m sweet because I don't eat meat. Please explain to me libs why I can not be fat if I want?
BMette--I will have to try okra that way--my hubby and I grow some every year. Usually I saute it with other vegies--it's good that way too. I tried boiling it once--slimy! But I will try it like you said. I will put it in a pan with cold water, turn on the heat, then remove as soon as it comes to a boil....:)
I'm a USMC Vietnam vet (Semper Fi!), but I think all you haters are way, way off base. Be reasonable and think a little. This is NOT the government forcing a diet on anyone. This is NOT tree hugging hippies trying to force their will on anyone. It is NOT anyone asking you to eliminate all meat from your diet.
It IS a sensible VOLUNTARY approach to helping to slow down or eliminate rain forest destruction as more and more grazing ground is illegally created. It IS a positive way to reduce over fishing that will eventually eliminate fish from our diet whether we like it or not. It IS a small step that each of us can take to reduce our carbon footprint that is destroying the environment. And, as a side benefit, it IS a good thing to do for your your health. Get over all your contrived sensitivities and wake up. Contribute something positive to our world instead of just sucking everything out of it and leaving the consequences for future generations.
I eliminated fish from my diet years ago. Won't touch the stuff.
i eliminated deb's from my diet years ago....new G.F. insisted on it.
You have got to be freaking kidding me?!! How stupid can these people be? Give up one of the basic pleasures of life so we can live longer? And this from a city that is so polluted it kills tens of thousands of people a year? Try leaving LA and then coming back--you 'll notice how bad the place smells! Go up into the mountains and look at the color of the air that hangs over the LA Basin! These people should shut up and stop wasting everyone's time! People should eat in moderation and eat a well balanced diet and being a vegetarian is not balanced!
I agree! Not sure why all these idiots think that they know what is best for themselves. Let the goverment with their collective wisdom make your decisions for you since you are unable to think for yourself.
phg,
Maybe meat is one of the basic pleasures of YOUR life...but it wasn't high up on my list! I like food and I still eat delicious food as a strict vegan. I'd put sex a LOT higher on my list...and I have more energy and endurance for more sex now that I eat a healthy diet....so life is WAY more pleasurable for me without eating meat.
By the way a vegetarian diet can be as balanced as any other and studies show vegetarians are healthier in general than meat eaters. Even a strict vegan diet (no meat, eggs, dairy, honey, etc) is perfectly healthy for people of all ages.
Nonsense. All of it.
Come now, Cadmancan, not ALL of it is nonsense! The part about the okra is definitely true.
i hope they dont become another mayor bloomberg.
my mom and dad fried okra when i was a kid and it was crunchy like eating grit to me . needless to say we ate alot of veggies with them being from the south
In New Orleans, every Monday is traditionally red beans and rice with sausage day. It used to be wash day, with large vats of boiling water and all the hard work of scrubbing sheets, etc., so no one had time to cook a meal that day. Instead, they soaked red beans overnight then let them simmer in seasonings all day Monday. They tossed in some sliced sausage and served it over rice for the evening meal. We may not wash everything by hand anymore, but we still eat this reminder on Mondays.
Fridays were our meatless days until the Catholic Church lost some of its prominence, but many still eat seafood on Fridays. And we still have the 40 days of Lent to go meatless, if we wish.
Our obesity problem isn't caused by meat; it's because everything we prepare is so delicious, that we can't stop eating it. :-)
Come on down and find out for yourself!
Sue - that's so true! Also, being a vegetarian does not necessarily thwart obesity. My sister gained 50 lbs AFTER she became a vegetarian. The key is to eat sensibly and use portion control. Americans feel cheated unless they have enough food on their plates to feed a third world village. It's better to eat smaller portions of really food like you guys fix in New Orleans than to pig out on fast food that is loaded with fat and calories but little else. Bon appetite!
We ate a lot of veggies as a kid and I'll have my meatless days on Friday instead just like I have for most of 65 yrs as a Catholic.
and i ate allot of pheasant, duck, etc when i was a kid, and guess what?... i still cant fly...
Envionmental reasons? NYC and LA are two peas in a pod.
...make it part of obamacare and then fine everyone for eating meat on monday. and don't forget to require everyone to eat fish on friday. now, if we can just get SOMEONE to pay for all this!
dont forget OBAMA FRIED CHICKEN on tue or you will be fined
To: Needaplan
In truth, less that half of the land mass on this planet that is capable of producing food is being used; not 100%. I agree we need some kind of plan, but let's not make it quite as dire as you propose.
It is not the use of a resource (in this case animal protein) that is the problem, it is the NUMBER of people using it. Save the environment, protect wildlife, reduce polution, stop global warming, end world poverty and help the flowers grow ............ reproduce at less than replacement number, make abortion mandatory for anyone living on welfare for more than a short period of time, lock out excess 3rd world populations. Every problem in the world and leftist agenda solved.
In truth you could also put the entire population of the world in Texas and have a foot wide border people free.
Never move with the heard... Unless you're a cow!
Just the fact it is organized is all the reason in the world NOT to do it! Who organized it? Why? And WHY REALLY??? Not the reason they tell everyone, give me the real reason, thank you!
Given that 2/3rds of all Americans are obese... maybe we ARE cows!
sure would explain the annual stampede's on black Friday........
Soylent Green is coming.
Dibs on the Irish! Love that beer-batter coating!
(And before any of you humorless posters say anything, yes, I'm freakin' Irish!)
What??? Did Bloomberg move to L.A.???
How about a 'Violence Free' Monday instead? Makes more sense to me.
or a drug free Monday
meatless monday....well ok...but a 'Violence Free' Monday or a 'drug free' monday? ...in L.A. ???? well thats just plain crazy talk........
How about a shut up in CA Saturday, as part of the project to end mindless babbling. The amount of Co2 not put into the atmosphere on just this one day will help stop global warming! If people in Kalifornia would just cooperate we could save the planet!
Good. More meat for the rest of us on Mondays.
thats what she said..............
Good perhaps the high cost of meat will go down with less people eating it. Supply and Demand You know.
Interesting, but I have a better suggestion.
If you are concerned about the environmental and health impacts of meat production how about you do a public education campaign exposing the practices of factory farming, overeating, and food waste?
That's too realistic for you? Oh, then you can go ahead and continue pretending to do something.
If it's true that "Texas is like a whole other country"
Then "California is like a whole other planet".
(one filled with tree huggers and weirdos)
ROTFLMAO!!!!!
I don't eat that much meat but I think I would have to go Hardee's, get the biggest triple meat/bacon/cheese whatever and eat it on the front steps of City Hall every Monday.
What a ridiculous world this place is becoming.
"Be Well Laneena Huxley"
Be well Navyvet98.
Sounds good PJ just drop that whole ;
and Ill join ya, hell we will make it a weekly event, .....hows Monday work for you?
Well said navyvet98, ia.scootertramp, pj965429,, soon it will be no salt, no spices no sugar, no smoking, no sex, NOOO LIFE. I'm an ex marine / vietnam vet. The governement already is controlling too may things in our lives, For a free country, there are so may laws saying we can't do this and can't do that that there are almost no freedoms anymore. I just got in trouble for speaking my mind,, they called it disorderly conduct because I said a cuss word.
Unless what they saw what they were doing was wrong. The Viet Nam war created a lot of EX Marines.
Old news. Catholics have been doing this for years. Only they do it Fridays. That's a lot of the reason for Friday night fish fries. (ooops That is meat too) California can be so weird sometimes.
only on days that end in "Y" or any month who's name has a vowel in it.
As a resident of this (formerly) golden state, that's an understatement. The (quite obviously) idiot residents of this state willingly voted themselves more taxes, thereby making this the most heavily taxed state in the country. In The Country. As for the subject of this article - This fair city's representative waste my tax dollars making all kinds of nonsense proclamations and the residents ignore them. It makes them feel good and the residents ignore them.
Watch out---the food police have sent emissaries from NY to LA-----soon they will be coming to your town.
I have been a vegetarian since 1974 and find this sort of parentalism in the form of governmental control unwanted and obnoxious. I notice it is generally a specific food that is chosen and NOT the government approved GMO's that are targeted.
Yes, it is true that GMO's contain the same nutrients as non GMO's BUT how much of the round up they are designed to withstand is absorbed and passed on to us during cooking and consumption? Another question to consider is how absorb-able are the nutrients in GMO's? If they are so great why then do we require more and more supplements?
Meatless Monday = Pointless Political Preaching.
Gee been meatless one day a week for most of my life. Small rebellion called falling away from the faith. And it is true when you tell the priest you haven't been to confession for 42 years he won'tr die of a heartattack. He will gently lead you through the ten commandments.
perhaps they should work on fixing their broken government.
well i for one am glad that L.A. solved all their real problems and have the time to focus on these much more serious issues.
Only in California do you get such stupidity. Doesn't the city counsel have anything better to do with their time. They should be thinking about all the kids in their city that go hungry every night instead of some fat guy not eating a burger on monday.
deedee-6203923 - If being healthier by eating less meat a week is stupid then go right ahead and stuff your face. Go to a slaughter house while you're at it and watch your dinner be killed.
Why would that stop anyone from eating meat? I butcher my own meat after hunting. Its part of the natural order of man. Dont have time then i go to the store
This just goes to show that our side has f**king lunatics, too......case in point.....how much does a City Council of LA member get paid? They should be docked their salary for yesterday, in my opinion. THIS is a TRUE example of a waste of taxpayer money....equally as bad as any time spent on any "jebeebus"-based law passed in Alabama...
anyone still wonder why Ca. is broke?
Its called bleeding Ca. dry by politics. We used this term (Bleeding the Company Dry) at the Work Place(minus the Politics) after it changes Owners so many times; the only thing that would be left is the Vacant building that would sit on a lot and rot away after it is all bleed out..
My thoughts exactly. Micro-Mnaging California government types are idiots. California should be a land of plenty, they have the people and the resources, but the most inept, dumb and arrogant idiots leading in government, and they keep voting for them!
There is no such thing as a "land of plenty." If there were, we wouldn't have water shortages here, nor would we have pollution days where asthmatic people can't go outside.
I could never be a vegetarian. I live in Texas and I love bbq brisket and Tex-Mex. I can't really enjoy a meal unless something had to be killed to make it. I'll eat a salad, but sprinkle a bit of dead animal on there to help me get the greens and veggies down.
