Southwest Airlines 737 slides off snowy taxiway into grass in Denver

DENVER -- A Southwest Airlines jet carrying 125 passengers and five crew members slid off a snowy taxiway at Denver International Airport on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

Flight 1905, a Boeing 737 traveling from Oakland to Denver,  landed on Runway 35 Right in Denver and exited the runway onto a high-speed taxiway, NBC News' Jay Blackman reported. The aircraft slid off the taxiway onto the grass.

An airport spokesperson said no injuries had been reported, NBC station KUSA reported.

Those on the plane were taken to the British Airways lounge, KUSA said.

Photos posted on www.nycaviation.com showed passengers coming down a stairway from the plane in heavy snow.

Snow, sometimes heavy, was falling in the Denver area, and temperatures were dropping from the 30s into the 20s, The Weather Channel reported.

Good reason for RyanAir to rethink that standing room-only idea...

Nah. He was a democrat, who was hired by the union, paid 150 grand a year, and by golly, can't land a plane right.

Filbert- Most Pilots are Republicans, Unions have no say in the hiring process at SouthWest, and he landed fine just hit ice (which you can't see) on the high speed taxiiway. Shut your mouth.

It was the airports fault! SNOWY runway... I can't tell you how many times my flight or landing was delayed while they CLEARED or de-iced the runway.

You'd think that an airport that routinely has crappy weather would have suitable equipment to keep the runways clear.

Shoot, I flew out of Denver and it was a BLIZZARD! In late October of 2009! That was fun! NOT! We were stranded for three hours waiting for a shuttle outside to pick us up to go to a hotel. All we got was 10 percent off a room, at a $130 a night Marriot or Hilton! It was a flight from Denver to SFO. My flight from Akron,OK was delayed 20 minutes because of the blizzard in Denver. So when our plane arrived, the connecting flight in Denver was just taking off. One lady went bolistic! She was screaming at the top of her lungs at the ticket agent (this was Frontier Airlines) There were absolutly no flights to the Bay Area at all. So they gave us discount vouchers for staying at a hotel that night. I had to wait outside for my shuttle in the snow and rain, it was horrible!!

Not sure where your from but they have altitude snow there, in New England they have snow no altitude involvement. Alsso in that part of the country they have freezing fog.

The FAA would have the pilot's head if he was high. And that wasn't the case so shush. The state electorate voted, and they chose the smart path of regulating and taxing all forms of pot just like we eventually did with tobacco and alcohol.

Funny that no other airline just before or after that time didn't slide off the taxiway? I don't place all blame on the Southwest pilot...Since it was (according to this article) it was a high speed taxiway, the ground control tower MAY not have given them enough time to taxi safely on the high speed taxiway as other aircraft are landing and other movement occurring. It's not easy to manage everything going on and in poor weather conditions. But I still cant stand Southwest. just glad no on got injured.

When they have a city street running just outside the fence a short distance from the end of the runway, bad things can happen...and did.

This 737 didn't slide off the end of a runway, it got off the runway onto a taxiway and there it hit ice and slid off the taxiway onto grass. You've all seen pictures of a car sliding on a snowy street? just think of a 737 doing the same thing.

No, the FAA has extremely strict guidelines. Any alcohol in the system or any non-prescription drug (including pot in its totality) and you won't fly, and you'll be fined immensely.

I guess that isn't a given. hahaha. I think you may need to take a trip on Southwest to Colorado and enjoy their newly passed law and unwind some.

Good going, glad no one hurt.FAA will investigate,in the next year or so we might hear if FAA decides plane was going too fast. Only time I ever was delayed on a SWA flight was one time, just before takeoff time the pilot announced that he had decided to take on some extra fuel because weather between departure city and destination might cause us to have to divert to a different airport and the pilot wanted to have a little extra fuel just in case, turned out we did not have to divert and were only about five minutes off schedule when we landed. I fly SWA whenever I can because I like the no BS load up and go attitude.

The DIA map shows two left turn high speed turn offs, P-6 and P-7 for runway 35R, which is 12,000 ft long. It might have been better to request permission to use the 90 degree turn offs P-8, P-9, or the one at the end of the runway(ED?)
