MIAMI -- The former chief of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement South Florida office has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison on a child pornography charge.

Anthony V. Mangione, 52, offered no clear explanation in court Friday about why he started viewing child pornography, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

"I'm pretty much a broken guy," Mangione told U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra. "I feel like I'm in a hole eight feet deep with six feet of dirt on top."

Mangione ran ICE's South Florida operations from 2007 to 2011, including numerous child pornography investigations. A 27-year veteran of the agency and its predecessors, he retired a few months after investigators searched his home and office computers in April 2011.

He was arrested in September 2011 and pleaded guilty this July to emailing child porn images.

Mangione had up to 150 images of child pornography, some depicting the "extreme abuse of children," according to federal prosecutors.

This former Federal law enforcement officer WAS taught at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center that he (and all officers) are held to a higher Standard of Conduct because of their Positions of Trust - - he has no excuse for his total lack of judgment - - he intentionally committed these acts and should be in prison for a very long time - - a disgrace for all officers with integrity!!!

Put him in a hole 8 feet deep with 6 feet of dirt on top of it! He is just one step away from being a pedophile. I don't want him living next door to my children!

I'm sure he had decent character to keep the most unwanted people out of America... Right?!

He's part of the problem too... Nobody hires decent people anymore.

Dave....all they care about when they hire people is...if you are a socialite, how you look, who you are related to, and if you already have enough money not to need the job. If you meet the fore-mentioned criteria, you are hired! The hiring process is a social game in the US...not a process to determine who has the best skills for the job (most times).

The people who made the child porn need to be caught, arrested and incarcerated for life. There is no excuse for this guy and his behavior.I believe that 6 years is appropriate.

Maybe if he was out doing his freaking job rounding up illegals he wouldn't have had time to get into child porn.

Still he is one sick sob, sorry to say he needs to be in prison for the rest of his life period.

Do not equate homosexuality with porn or prostitution. According to all data, there exists a stronger association between heterosexuality and porn & prostitution. Get your facts "straight" and get them right before your bigotry makes you look uninformed and uneducated!

If you're involved in child pornography and you HEAD THE UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENGFORCEMENT, you've got a "Conflict of Interest"!

You're tweeked and you're in charge of making sure that tweeked people to the point of anti-social behavior aren't allowed into this country, it's an OXYMORON!

How can we trust you to keep out sociopaths that would kill innocent people when you're sizing up where the child porn comes from and the boys that might visit from there?

You're a waste of time if you're on the third rail of the track! We're paying you for a normal job, not you're fantasy island!

To gutcheck1: Interesting question. Maybe these white guy perverts simply get more publicity than nonwhite perverts. Some of these white perverts in the news are in places of authority, so more publicity. Could look at the statistics, but don't have time; have to eat breakfast now.

6 years????? Are you kidding me?!? You get more than that for shoplifting at WalMart. This piece of trash, ( no disrespect to trash intended ) contributes to the disease of pedophilia and all he gets is 6 years? Hell, the judge that sentenced him should get at least 10 years for coddling a piece of @!$%#, ( no disrespect to @!$%# intended ).

I have learned to be skeptical about charges of "child" pornography in the USA. Were the "children" 7 years old or 17 years old? Both ages get you into trouble. The sentence may indicate "children" who are 17, not 7. Were these children from the USA or from other countries which do not regard sexuality in the teenage years as a bad thing that must be prosecuted? Many Europeans and Asians thought the entire teenage Traci Lords controversy in the 1980"s was an example of prudish backward USA thinking.

should get a life sentence, esp when you are in a job that requires you to be held to a higher standard like this person was. He was disgusting in watching things that are clearly against the law, there would be no supply if there was no demand for this disgusting crime against children. A man of the law knows just as clearly as the next person it is wrong, he broke the law while appearing to promote upholding the laws. Should be an automatic life sentence when it is an officer in charge of upholding the laws.

            should get a life sentence,

Not if he is an abuse victim who never violated a child sexually himself in person. Our justice system is designed to correct, not destroy.

Why is it when child molesters are caught, they look like child molesters? It just seems like they could be caught in the job interview.

He retired after the investigation against him and he likely expected a break from investigators because of his years of service, but I'm betting he showed no one he investigated any leniency.

He was arrested in September 2011 and pleaded guilty this July to emailing child porn images.

He can still lose his pension and all benefits.

??? Did I read that correctly? He retired after they searched his home and office computers? He was allowed to stay on the job even when there was suspicion of his crime and possibly evidence of it, and he was still on the job months into the investigation?

                    Hi, Scooter.

I certaintly do NOT feel uncomfortable when someone says "Thanks" for my Marine Corps service. I did however feel very uncomfortable during the Vietnam Era when we were told to not mention our military service in order to avoid negative comments.

Now that this lowlife is headed to prison let's hope he is placed into the general population and making sure the inmates know who he is and what crimes he has committed to become a fellow inmate. This way true justice can be done for these children who are made victims of sick twisted monsters and victimized again by those who pay to see the horrible sick monstorous abuse!
