Obama lays wreath, honors nation's veterans

At the Arlington cemetery in Virginia, President Barack Obama paid tribute to veterans. "Each year on the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause as a nation and as a people to pay tribute to you," the president said. NBC's Lester Holt has more.

President Barack Obama honored the nation’s military veterans on Sunday, paying tribute at a Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington Memorial Cemetery to "the heroes over the generations who have served this country of ours with distinction."

In keeping with tradition, he laid a wreath he laid at Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., an act he said was intended to "remember every service member who has ever worn our nation's uniform."

Obama said in a speech at the cemetery's Memorial Amphitheater that America will never forget the sacrifice made by its veterans and their families.

President Barack Obama places a Veterans Day wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., on Sunday.

"Whenever America has come under attack, you’ve risen to her defense. Whenever our freedoms have come under assault, you’ve responded with resolve," the president said.

"Today, the proud nation expresses our gratitude but we do so mindful that no ceremony or parade, no hug or handshake is enough to truly honor that service."

Obama also noted, "This is the first Veterans Day in a decade in which there are no American troops dying and fighting in Iraq" -- a statement that drew polite applause from the crowd.

The country expresses its gratitude for veterans and their service with ceremonies and parades.

The president touted the work of first l ady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, for their involvement with the Joining Forces campaign, which urges businesses to hire veterans. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the post-9/11 GI Bill program, which provides college education funding for those who have served, and said soldiers suffering war-related health problems will get the care they need.

"No one who fights for this country overseas should everhave to fight for a job, or a roof over their head, or the carethat they have earned when they come home,'' he said.

After the speech, Obama visited Arlington National Cemetery’s Section 60, the final resting place for the service members who lost their lives during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Dozens of family members and individuals were at the area paying respects. The president and first lady talked quietly with some of them.

He has no right to speak of Veterans. After he ran the most vile racist campaign in American history. He has divided the country more than any other President.

He lied about Libya and blackmailed Petraeus to say that some you tube video cause the murder of American citizens.

He has NO right being our president either. If it wasn't for the lowlife minorities voting for their welfare checks he would have lost by a landslide. Four years of his useless ass was enough.

I really feel sorry for our troops having him for their commander-in-chief. If they ever need leadership, they will be SOL.

DEM - Obama lays wreath, honors nation's veterans

in contrast -

GOP - defeated a Veterans' Job Creation bill right before the Fall Recess (the Fall campaign)

.

My fellow Americans, judgment is yours. I have total faith in you since you have decided to re-elect Pres. O and increase Democrat presence in both Houses of Congress.

Joe, Persons like the ambassador and his paid security agents who unfortunately died in Bengazi go voluntarily into harms way to serve our countries interests. Sometimes people die in these dangerous places. It is sad, but it is no more a scandal than every other similar situation. How about our soldiers who die every week in Afganistan??? This whole Bengazi thing is a made up kerfuffle manufactured by you righties to try to smear the President who has done nothing wrong. It will end up ammounting to nothing just like fast and furious.

Can we take one day to honor those who have served OUR country without the bitterness and hatred of the wingnuts?

So Obama is laying a wreath (which "looks good") as he is ready to "GUT" the military budget by another 23% very soon ! What a guy !! What a salesman !!

I wonder, which means more to our fighting service men and women overseas ? Will they have live ammo to defend themselves, or will they be like the "security" crew in Benghazi without ??

  • 2 votes
#1.18 - Mon Nov 12, 2012 5:13 PM EST

Jim, most of the service people over there don't have ammunition, and if they do, it's kept in a lockbox somewhere and doled out as the commanders feel it necessary. You know it's not politically correct for our officers and fighting personnel to shoot anyone in their own defense, don't you?

Yes, I heard the B-in-Chief give his little photo op speech at Arlington this morning. What an embarrassment. To take this day (actually yesterday, Sunday, 11/11) and besmirch the military in this way is just horrific. He took it as a photo op.

As for those of you who think Mr. Romney was a draft dodger -- there was no draft when he became old enough to serve! and I might add, WHERE THE HELL DO YOU THINK OBAMA WAS? He was never in the military either, unless you want to count his younger years in the forces of Muslim and Islam extremists!.

It never ceases to amaze me how uninformed the Obama camp is. SOFA Iraq was negotiated by George Bush. Obama wanted to keep troops in Iraq beyond the deadline and the Iraqi govt told them NO!

Obama wants to renege on the 2014 withdrawal timetable he so foolishly advertised to our enemies.

It's no wonder he was re-elected when you consider that most people in America doesn't even know where those countries are, much less the policy behind them.

Don't believe what I post? Google it. Educate yourself as to something about Obama other than his skin tone.

It totally amazes me to see negative comments like Woof the dog. Note that it doesn't surprise me, but tells me that there are goofs in the US who have been programed to seethe and hate and believe that the Civil War was won by the Confederate Army. Worse than that, they honestly believe that the South will rise again. Rise in what way? Oh that's right... rise by spewing hatred with every breath. Good luck with that.

Obama brings our troops home after a 10+ year war and thousands of US military died. This president had the guts, yes the guts, to do the right thing. Bush and Cheney would have kept them in the mideast forever... needed or not, just to thump their chests.

I hope that Obama was not involved with the inaction of our people being murdered in libya. But if he is and I feel like hillary certainly was also along with several others, nothing will be done about it. Sure there will be afew screams from the right but it will lead to nothing. There is two things you can count on, the rich will not turn against their own unless they can benefit from it and the powerful will not either because they are all guilty of something and do not want to rock the boat. America is a screwed up country, everything about it is immoral, lying, cheating, stealing, not a whole lot of difference in us and a dictatorship. The rich win, the poor lose. Sure there are people who do good things and there are companies who do also, but the majority fit in the discription I gave of America. The election shows that most Americans are clueless. I am not a Obama or a Romney fan, but I know when I am being lied to. I actually wanted a national health plan because I believe every human being should have health care without having to worry if they can afford it or not. How can another human being with feelings and a heart not want someone who is sick and in pain or dying not to be treated for it. I would gladly pay a sales tax for this to happen, the problem is there are so many heartless, greedy, blood sucking scumbags in the world now that no one could be trusted with this. I am also a vet and I do not want a special day set aside for me, what I did was for my country and all I ask in return is for my wounds to be taken care of and they are. The Veterans Administration are doing a excellent job now, I know that in the past they dropped the ball but they are making up for it. The only gripe I have is some of the people who they have hired could give a rats a**, they are there for the money and job security, thats it. God Bless all of you guys who gave it all and to those who are still giving, serve with honor and dignity and get the scum who do not out, and believe me there are plenty in there. I gave for the people not the government.

I just want to explain a bit about the Libya situation.... and will start in Washington , DC. If you travel around the area known a Embassy Row, you may notice there are "NO" Libyan troops stationed around the Libyan embassy, nor French troops around the French embassy and so on and so on. It is the duty of the host country to protect their guests. That being said, There were not and can not have been US troops of any kind there to protect out Embassy staff. There is a nominal presence by way of Marine Honor Guard in every Embassy..... it's just the way it's done. The President did nothing out of the ordinary and I'm speaking in terms of what Presidents have done since The United States has been a free country. It's the nature of diplomacy....The best he could have done, had he known just how that incident would play out, was to withdraw the staff.....I assume the staff understood the danger of their mission and I think it's an insult to their commitment and to the work of all Ambassadorial staffs to hear this sideline quarterbacking going on ..... at best, it requires the thinking of a "clueless idiot" to think things could have happened in the way suggested by all the other clueless idiots.... "INVADE LIBYA" , of course.....

My ancestors built Washington,DC and the home I grew up in lies just outside the original boundary of the D of C. in fact, there was an original marker in my front yard. I was raised of porridge and politics as a kid. I just wish more people took an "ACTIVE" part in the way government was run. Thomas Jefferson told us the country would be diminished if we as individuals did not take an active roll ... I have friends, intelligent friends across the country who don't know their Congressman but in passing and have no idea how their Representative has voted and on what issues. Yet they are very vocal about our President in a negative way.... It makes me sad. It makes me sad too that so many people are angry and the best it seems they can do is write stupid things about matters they do not understand. You want this country to be YOURS? Make it yours by becoming aware of how the government works. Read about the issues ( your Congressman's office should provide you with all the information you ask for), form a neighborhood political club.... just stop all this negative bull s^%t and take back your country the productive and positive way... it's not just your right, it's your obligation....

Obama "Bought" the Hispanic vote by ignoring existing immigration law and making a unilateral declaration that he would ignore those parts of the law he did not like !!!

The Obamacare layoffs have already begun. I'm guessing the people in Washington don't really want to avoid the "fiscal cliff" and taxes across the board as well as deep cuts to our military will take effect in January.

Very hard times ahead if they do.

Romney, the a liar, rarely ever mentioned the military. The media rarely says this so I wish you all to know that many Republicans in the upper brackets voted for Obama, for these reasons and more. I know them because one is a relative of mine, and another a famous doctor. Thank you, the military, for your service.

We can differ. You can hate me. But Romney was a good man. He created jobs. Obama lied about him. If you did not like his policies that is fine. But the lies and falsities are just plain wrong.

Over 80% of doctors hate Obamacare. The military cannot stand Obama. They wanted Romney. This is why Obama suppressed their votes. Most deployed military were not given the opportunity to vote.

Regarding Obama's racism. Read his books and listen to his preacher. He internally hates his white side. Despite that fact that this is where his intelligence comes from. His ruthlessness and hate comes from his drunk polygamous father.

Well, Joe. Seems you found something the intelligence community on this blog can agree on: Romney "WAS" a good man, until he sold out to the right wingnuts, crazies, teabaggers, and the Fox liars.

Romney should be relieved that he lost the election. Now, he won't have to explain why none of his five sons are military, or military-bound. Would've been so GOP to start a war, and send everyone elses family members to fight it for him.

I remember every presidential candidate since Ike/Stevenson in 1952. Every politician plays loose with the facts but Romney was the most dishonest candidate of my lifetime. Romney has no core, no backbone and would say anything to get a vote. Romney told more lies than Nixon, Clinton and W. Bush combined.

"IF" Romney is such a good man lets see how he takes this defeat. He doesnt need to be the chief to create jobs. If he steps up and shows that he is about the people for the next 4 yrs he will have support of the whole country. If the man is worth his weight and shows the country this by his actions both Reps and Dems will wote for him. But I think we wont hear anything from him for another 3yrs.

Are you implying that if you have a "white" side it's naturally dominant and more intellectual than your "black" side, because as someone who IS half-white half-black. I don't identify as being a "white" person or a "black" person i'm no one other than me. I don't think i could "internally hate" one side of myself, because it isn't really one side of me. I have multitudes of sides to me but i assure you none of them are label "white" or "black".

And i think it's somewhat...well somewhat is an understatement...I think it IS disrespectful that you all go on here and rant and rave, regardless of who's side you're on. Shouldn't you post all this in some other article about how texas wants to secede from the union, or another stupid article like that. Just let people say thanks to their loved ones overseas.

If this man cared about America and the American veterans, why aren't their votes being counted? Why all the mailed late ballots, the lost ballots, the "accidently" dumped over-board ballots? And to the A-hole that said they are tired of hearing about Benghazi and that those men knew the risk when they went, you need to read up on the facts and what you're great potus did/did not do. Heaven forbid anyone you love is ever put in danger on foreign soil and the great leader(s) of this country reply with a Stand Down order. If you don't know what Stand Down means, look it up. I don't know if he is right or not, but he makes a claim you want supported, while being passive aggressives in asking him to support it. Stop being passive and argue with facts if you think he is wrong.

You have no facts, just upchucking limpballs lies. Over 60% here with the 10th Mountain Div. voted for Obama. It followed about the same as the national numbers.

What about the CAB and 10th Sustain? I know 4th BDE is down in FT.Polk But I don't think grunts have a favorably opinion about many politicians; on top of 10th MTN. being one of the most deployed units in during the GWOT.

I love the righties call liberals "bleeding hearts" in a derisive manner as if empathy for your fellow humans is something worthy of ridicule and scorn. Obama cares, he's a "bleeding heart" too.

bush used 9-11 as a reason to go to war Evan i thought we needed to do some thing about Iraq but bush and the gop reasons was not the same as my reason we needed to help the people of Iraq and bush was just in it for the war and oil and with Romney he would of sent 300.000 troops to Iraq and for what Iraq is no threat to us but they still have oil (look up the gop debates it came right from his mouth ) now with bush he promise us justice but justice did not come until Obama was president bush promise but Obama delivered justice why because Obama made it his job to deliver us the ones that caused 9-11

This is an article about veterans and their reaction to being thanked. How did it turn into just another name-calling Romney/Obama argument? Anyway, I for one was glad to see this story b/c I had read several comments lately from vets who, for a variety of reasons, don't like to be thanked for their service. First of all, these men are correct: They were doing the jobs for which they volunteered. I do appreciate their willingness to take on those difficult jobs, but still . . . Also, I was a civilian employee of the Marine Corps for several years. Many servicemen and women enlisted because of love for country and a sense of duty, but many enlist for other, less admirable reasons. Here are a few actual statements from some of the Marines I've known: 1. I want the education benefits. 2. I couldn't get a job anywhere, so I figured I'd join the service. 3. I want to go to [insert latest hot spot] and see what it's like to kill someone. 4. I thought this would be the best and cheapest place to learn the skills I need to get a high-paying job in the civilian sector. 5. I didn't have anything better to do. 6. I want to be a Marine so I can kick ass and get away w/it. 7. I joined b/c it's easier to get women if you're in the Marines. In addition, I worked w/the recruits for several months, and quite a few of them were young people who had no identity of their own, who'd had difficult lives, and who simply wanted to belong somewhere. The majority of the recruits, enlisted men, noncoms, and officers were dedicated, patriotic people, but a large minority were in the Corps for other reasons. Should I thank them, too? And to complicate matters further, many of the men and women who'd served in the Middle East told me that what they did over there made them feel so conflicted and disgusted that the last thing they wanted was thanks. I thought maybe those Marines were isolated cases, but apparently they weren't. I also knew that if I said anything about my thoughts on this subject, I'd probably be accused of disrespecting our vets, and that isn't the case. My father fought in almost every major sea battle in the South Pacific during WWII. My uncle landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day. His brother was right behind him w/the infantry. Another uncle was a WWII glider pilot. My best friend is a Viet Nam vet. (BTW, he hates being thanked.) I respect our soldiers, sailors, Coast Guardsmen, airmen, and Marines.

So what your saying shady lady is that if the Marine didn't tell you he went in to fight for his country that he shouldn't have been in there? I came from the poor side of town> I knew my future was bleak if I didn't join because my mother couldn't afford the military college & couldn't afford college & I refused to be bullied by a bunch of nimwits!

I didn't say that at all, Dannyinmo. As long as the person is physically and mentally fit to be a Marine, that's fine. I simply meant that not everyone's primary reason for joining is patriotism. If someone enlists to get something he wants of out life, I have no problem w/that, but if that's the case, do I still owe him thanks? Because yeah, I guess I do find the "I want to fight for my country" reason a little more honorable than any other. BTW, I came from the poor side of town, too. I knew I couldn't afford college, so I kept my grades high and got some scholarships, applied for a grant, and supplied the rest of my tuition by working a full-time job while I attended college. Oh, I did neglect to state one thing that has probably created some confusion. These answers were given in response to the question, "Why did you join the Marines?" I guess I figured that if the reason was, "To fight for my country," the respondents would have said so, and many of them did. The reasons I've listed are some others given. Can't speak to being "bullied by a bunch of nimwits" b/c I'm not unclear on how that relates to what I've said. Anyway, I hope you now have a bright future.
