In the civilian world this is really a non-issue. If the affair occurred while he was active duty then that might be a problem because adultery is a crime in the military. However, more often than not the military turns the other cheek unless someone screws up and gets impregnated.

Now, since women have moved into forward positions and support the military has changed. Men and women are now more than ever in close quarters at all times. Which mean there is a lot of fraternization going on.

In plain English single and married men and women often have affairs while deployed. Matter of fact, it is hard to find someone who isn't in some sort of relationship or "understanding" while overseas. Don't ask don't tell wasn't just the military position on gay and lesbian relationships. It also was the overwhelming attitude toward all "undesirable" relationships.

If Daivd Petraeus saved America in the War In Iraq, he should be allowed to have as many women as he has wanted.....

but if he can't even keep a lid on his affairs, he should resign from CIA, since he has proved a failure in keeping secrets.

This is ugly, the head of the CIA was having an affair with his biographer, who in turn was sending emails to someone threatening enough that she went to the FBI. An FBI agent was removed from the case because he knew people involved. Then the same FBI agent leaked the info. For once Cantor did the right thing and shut his mouth. This FBI agent should be knocked down to meter maid.

Petraeus was a great General, but as director of the CIA his integrity is paramount, and he cast a huge shadow on his integrity, he is not an enlisted soldier with an "agreement". He has no choice he has to resign or be removed, I am glad he took the more honorable path and resigned.

Actually, there are more than just one affair on the table. General Petraeus was involved in extra marital affairs while serving as the Commander of US and Allied Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The FBI started an investigation when one of the General's girlfriends called the FBI for protection from a person or persons who were threatening her via emails. It appears that the General elected to fall on his sword in an effort to control the release of information regarding several extra marital affairs. Keep in mind that the General has been anointed for future higher political positions, to include a possible run for the White House in 2016. I am more interested in two issues. First, did the General Staff assist in the coverup of his extra marital affairs while he was on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan? Second, how many people at the CIA assisted in the coverup of a CIA Sanctioned Paramilitary Operation inside Libya, that contributed to the murder of four US Citizens? This goes far deeper than a General hopping into bed with a girlfriend.

All this does is reinforce my feeling that women should not serve with men in any aspect of war. ANY man or woman thrown together in a stressful situation for months at a time will result in the same situation. I do not blame either of these good folks.

Why would it have had any impact on the election? The General is a Republican and was originally given his post by The Bush Administration. It was up to the General as to when he would hand deliver his own resignation letter to the President. He didn't want this revaluation to interfere in why is the most important role American's have in choosing who would be leading the country. This would have only added fodder and speculation to an issue that has absolutely nothing to do with either Romney or President Obama.

He would have had to hand his resignation letter to both if Romney had won.Obama would still be the President until the end of January and Romney would have to chose a successor. It would not have been a very good thing to go without a Director of the C.I.A. until the end of January now , would it!.

The affair or affairs, are not anybody's business but the General and his wife. BP I'm sure she was a looker in her 20's but closing in on 60's I would suspect things may have changed. You too will deter-ate over the years.

And William, you might notice that the story quotes Eric Cantor as stating that the FBI has at least at one point been concerned that sensitive classified information may have been compromised. You seem pretty certain that's not the case, no doubt based on your first hand knowledge of the facts on the investigation...

This affair was known about for a couple of months. The timing of all of this, coming out right before he was to testify about Bengazi is very suspicious. Could it be that they tried to use this to pressure Patraeus to change his testimony regarding Bengazi and when he refused they used this to take him down?!?! This would be in line with the usual dirty tricks in Washington. Not that I am defending what Patraeus did, obviously it showed poor judgement on his part, but the way DC works this could have been kept quiet and he could have kept his job. I think he refused to toe the party line on Bengazi so this was used to take him down and keep him from testifying before Congress. Now the acting D/CIA will testify and he is a political hack who will likely stick with the administration story.

And why would anyone want to announce something like this into such a horribly volitile process like an election... would not this Bush appointee be accused of swift-boating?

Having an affair isn't "making a mistake". It's not a mistake when you know what you're doing is wrong but you choose to do it anyway.

Some will call me a consipiracy theorist, but I think this clearly sounds like a fall guy and ramping up protection for the administration. Easy gut check is- how would this be taken by the media if President Obama was a republican?

Rationale- Petreaus has an affair that is known prior to the election and is the head of the CIA, while real investigations are setting up on Benghazi. You have to agree, affairs are red meat ways to get rid of people in DC, likely because (I think) there are a LOT of revolving beds in DC. So nobody resigns until pushed out for their affairs, in Petreaus' case they've already said that they held back for the election and that Petreaus "asked" the administration and the President to let him resign "numerous times". So clearly the status quo was more important as we got to the election. No information got grip in the media and the official response was "we'll figure this out- later". Now as we are going to get those hearings and suddenly Petreaus is out and won't be showing up for those hearings. Why? What possibly could so besmerch Petreaus that his accounting of events is completely without base?? Then you've got Hillary "not available" due to schedule issues, then she's gone as Secretarey of State and won't participate. It now sounds like Holder knew since the summer, but he's stepping out quickly too.

I think Patreaus is an easy fall guy for the administration and the media. They hated him during the Bush era, then needed someone with military leadership credentials to give them credibility in Afghanistan. They raised him up as great. Then they disregarded his build up/surge requests and gave him much less to work with. Then he left the service and was later pulled over to the CIA when they needed drone strike-special ops credibility. They raised him up as great again. Now they drop him under the bus.

I think things stink.

Libyan prisoners, CIA annex, possible torture, arms deal to Syrian rebels,DEAD Ambassador, Obama blaming a video, orders to stand down, no help sent, Obama claiming not to be aware of FBI investigation (either way it is bad), head of the CIA compromised, SOS hiding from Congress, President crying (Doc check his testosterone levels he is at that age), media in the @!$%#ter, Americans losing faith by the hour, verge of another recession, stock market retreating, Obamacare causing full time employment to be a thing of the past, Obama still insisting on running up the national debt by continued deficit spending, regulations that will crush business streaming out of Washington post election, Iranian leadership playing US like a fiddle, government and big business being infiltrated via cyber attacks, Afghanistan and Pakistan poised to be ruled by the Taliban and Al Qaida, fiscal cliff a few yards away, another punt, debt ceiling to be raised to over $18 TRILLION, change we didn't hope for.

Given the closeness of this election, one has to believe that if the playing field were level and the press and government agencies were doing their jobs without political interference, we would be preparing for the inauguration of a new president instead of giving a second term to the existing one. No, it's not sour grapes, but rather just a digesting of the facts. We now deserve whatever we get as a nation.

AS they should, not concerning the election, but to aid in the cover up that is continuing concerning Benghazi. It doesn't matter he has resigned, he has information from his time as the head of the CIA concerning Benghazi, resigning doesn't get him off the hook. Just like Benghazi this is getting stranger by the minute. It seems the general was using her as a mouthpiece after the Benghazi incident or she was accessing his e-mail without his knowledge. How in the world can he do his job when he is going through all this, no wonder his response to 9/11 was so lame. I said this from the beginning, the C.I.A., State Department and military appeared not to be in concert. This is really not a political issue except for the way they publicly responded afterwards. It is a national security issue and whether the steps put in place after 2001 work. It appears they need tweaking.

I guess it could be political because all of them seem so surprised that an event like this could happen on 9/11. I think Hillary on 9/12 even said how shocked she was. They shoot little girls for reading books, enough said, lock and load. The administration thinking this is about a video and not the war on terror is a scandal. Eventually Hillary will have to speak under oath and the truth will come out. She can't travel forever. But he was elevated to the highest levels of leadership in our military and our government. He commanded all US and NATO troops in Afghanistan. He was the Director of the CIA. When you are given that level of trust, you don't get a pass for "lapse of judgment." He knew it was wrong when he violated the tenets of military law, including his own standing order regarding personal conduct. He knew it was wrong when he was mis-using his office at the CIA. Accomplished General, yes, but no longer hero status, and no free pass. He gave those up when he violated the oaths he took.

Yeah, an affair. No big deal. But when you break it down, it comes to this: his wife can't trust him, how can we? His mistress leaked information that was classified, which means she knew more than she should have, which means he was telling her stuff he shouldn't have; reason #2 he can't be trusted. Mainstream media kept a lid on this whole thing until after the election, so they are an accomplice.

Can anyone be trusted to do their job any more? This man and the administration that backed him up have put the safety of Americans at risk. Not only to those who are now DEAD, but to those that are still over there.

Think about it. Everyone most likely knew about this long before 9/11/2012, so thinking from a solely emotional human point of view, what kind of relationship did the Director have with all of the other Directors and Secretaries. One of the biggest issues with the attack is the lack of communication between the Departments. Do you think Petraeus knowing his career is over has any correlation? Was he able to look the military leadership in the eye and give concise advice and counsel? Was he able to look Hillary, knowing the infidelity she suffered, in the eye? I thought from the beginning the C.I.A. didn't seem to work properly with the military on this one. I thought my theory was weakened due to my respect for Petraeus. But now it makes more sense. Did this non-related distraction give dumb luck to the terrorists?

In agreement with previous posts, I believe that if there is a cover up, or if the information was witheld because of the election that Eric Cantor's decision to not release the information he claims to have had makes him complicit in the scandal. Otherwise, Mr. Cantor must have believed the news of minimal consequence.

To me, the big question is whether or not he really was privy to the information, or whether he "mis-spoke" about that.

The fact that this was kept quiet until after the election sure smacks of politics again! It is amazing what lengths Obama will go to remain in power! I will however wait and see what else comes to light before deciding what is going on if ever. He is human and there is no way he was doing his job properly.

Petraeus is just another patriot that is needed to fill the pot holes for Obamas buss. everyone needs to be especially care full these days because there are allot of potholes out there and even young working women can find themselves under the buss if they so much as speak out about a certain person who's name I'm starting to fear even mentioning less I find my life in ruin. Petraeus was not behaving near as bad as Mr W Clinton why all the fuss nobody got upset about Bills escapades he never resigned in fact he went on to lie about it and the liberals loved him for it, I remember my brother commentating " without Clinton what would we do for entertainment ".
