Updated at 10:38 p.m. ET: Five people -- two adults and three children -- were found dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in a garage Monday afternoon in Toledo, Ohio. Police said the deaths could be the result of a murder-suicide.
The victims were a 52-year-old woman, her three grandchildren – ages 5, 6 and 10 – and a 32-year-old man who was the uncle of one of the grandchildren, according to the Toledo Blade newspaper.
Emergency responders found the grandmother, uncle, three children, two dogs and a cat in a Honda Civic in the grandmother's garage. A Dodge truck in the garage had pumped exhaust -- carbon monoxide -- into the Civic.
The children's grandfather called police shortly after 3 p.m. asking for a wellness check. Firefighters ultimately had to break into the garage.
Toledo Police Sgt. Joe Heffernan said the grandmother and her daughter were involved in a custody battle over the children. The grandmother had been their primary caregiver over the last four years and the mother was in the process of regaining custody.
Authorities did not say whether a carbon monoxide detector was in the home, NBC 24 in Toledo reported.

WTF is wrong with these stupid people! Kill your worthless self not others!
Anybody check the last sentence of this article - authoritis did not know if there was a carbon monoxide detector in the home? This was done in a CAR, in the GARAGE, not in the home! And if they were doing it deliberately, do you suspect that they might just have not paid attention to a detector, even if there was one? Duhhhh - writer gets paid by the word, gotta make it just a little bigger.....
How could anybody treat those poor dogs and cat like that?
How could anyone treat innocent KIDS like that? This is just one of the reasons I don't believe any god exists.
Such a dumb statement take your religious beliefs and shove it... so stupid GOD HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THSI EVIL ACT, THE DEVIL DOES! sO keep your comments out...shame on you.
How could anyone treat those dogs and cat so bad
Now what do we do? Should we ban Grandmothers or Dodges?
I hope hell does really exist for that POS grandmother. Rot, lady.
apparently one of the children is the main suspect. The five year old left a letter saying that " if I can't be with grandma no one can"
"Authorities did not say whether a carbon monoxide detector was in the home, NBC 24 in Toledo " As if that mattered. They were in a car in the garage. Is this thrown in because they have a word minimum?
I've reviewed all of today's news and this seems to be the "feelgood" story of the day
Arty, you aren't even close to being funny, and you seem to think you're hilarious. You are sick beyond treatment, and your wretched trolling attempt is an EPIC FAIL.
to mymomusedarubbertool "I love this crowd"
At least that family took advantage of the low gas prices
Come on this was a planned out idea. Grandma couldnt stand the thought of the children going back to their "crackhead" mama. The uncle was probably a bigger loser than the mother, and lets not forget about the two dogs and the cat that were also killed. What a tragic tragic way to try and make a point to someone. Very SELFISH on Grandma's part.
. . . there was no carbon monoxide detector in the home, said the article. What good would it have done and what value does the comment add to the tragedy?
I hear this was Grandmas second attempt, she did the same thing last week only using the electric car
I bet the grandmother knows the daughter better than the courts and sounds like she wanted to save them and society a lot of grief.
If this news source had listed the reasons the daughter lost her kids in the first place it would have completed this story.
The country has committed suicide... is it that hard to believe a family would follow?
It would appear that no one won that custody battle. So sad that it had to come to this, especially for those three innocent children (and the pets, too).
First...clearly this was no accident for those who have difficulty with reading comprehension.
"A Dodge truck in the garage had pumped exhaust -- carbon monoxide -- into the Civic." (see, planned)
Second, Grandma clearly wasn't suicidal. She was grief-stricken at the thought of her daughter regaining custody of the children. (and after having them for 4 years, probably rightfully so). Add to that the fact that the Uncle also went along with this plan...then you know momma must have been one bad egg.
Third,If they had to go all bat-crap crazy...then Grandma and Uncle really should have taken out the momma...and let the kids grow up and live thier lives to the fullest.
That all being said...what a sad hopeless situation. What a shame. I feel very sorry for those left behind in this tragedy.
Goodness, not much different than a suicide attack by a terrorist, is it?
SANDY VICTIMS-PLEASE HIRE A PRIVATE ADJUSTER
Can't post this by story on vics getting screwed, esp by LIPA, thanks to MSN's new screens where messages can't be posted, but I am worried about what I am hearing about insurers are screwing people even worse than LIPA and help is needed right now and I d/k where to post this. So, I apologize to those here to read tragic story.
Private adjusters get 4-15% of what you recover but they get a LOT more and much quicker than doing it alone. The % is peanuts.
For example, a friend and 25 neighbors in a severely hit area hired a PA. He is charging 5% as a "group rate". They all got paid and/or are getting paid soon 10X more than those in the area who tried on their own AND the people on their own won't see a dime fior a long time even AFTER the insurer shows up (and were told not to touch anything in the meantime that isn't dangerous, like sand in your l/r).
Another example of fraud-Breezy Point vic (NY Post this weekend) lost house worth $645K (they don't own the land so rebuild cost will be close). Insurer NOW claims they didn't receive last month's payment and were "about" to send him notice he could re-instate after 30 days! Thus, not a dime for his claim!!! He shouldn't even be speaking with them-get a lawyer/Private Adjuster.
I work with underdogs and ins companies a lot, NOTHING suprises me, sad to say. So, please, get a professional-you need it.
First this is a horrible way for children to die. You can joke all the stupid jokes you want but there are 5 people dead, 3 were small children. Second go to the page for thee newspaper the Toledo Blade newspaper.
It has a bit more info than this article.
A daytime suicide. You have to wonder what those children were thinking when told they had to stay in the car. A 52 year old woman. A 32 year old man. 5, 6, and 10 were the ages of the children. Two dogs and a cat. All were in a Honda Civic. The Dodge truck was left running in the same garage.
They obviously locked the garage making it difficult to save them. But what is the back story. Was it the pressures of society? Did the primary wage earner lose the only job? No source of income forcing the family into the street or - choosing to end it all?
Was it the loss of love? Was it all of the above? I believe it was. What would lead you to take the children's lives if it wasn't love and the loss of a job both during the same time period.
We all know the pressure our consumer life style places on individuals to (keep up with the Jonses) and when thats gone then what else is there?
There is failure. Or the perception of deep failure in the mind of those ready to commit suicide.
But then there is the 5, 6, and 10 year old:
Were they feeling the dark thoughts that the 52 and 32 year old was?
OK so we have a murder/suicide where a Dodge truck was rigged to pump carbon monoxide into a Honda Civic where the bodies were found and the genius reporter wondered if there was a carbon monoxide detector in the home to warn the murder victims? Idiot...
Condolences to the family...
The article stated that the mother was trying to regain custody after the grandmother had the kids for 4 years. Whatever the reason for why she lost her children is not the issue to me. The authorities found her unfit to care for them, but she sure was better at being a mother to them when compared to the grandmothers care. They take someones children away from their mother and give them to someone who kills them. This story just makes me sick.
Hmmm....we are always so quick to assume how this happened. Grandma did it, or the uncle did it....It could be neither of them did.....So, Let's not condemn anyone until a thorough investigation has been completed. In the meantime, 5 lives were lost, with 3 of those lives being young children. I truly hope all questions surrounding this case get answers.
Uh hello the adultswere responsible it States it in the article and the motive was the custody battle some godparents are a little too attached maybe she should have done a better job with her daughter and how she raised her then maybe none of this situation would have never happened had her daughter not have her kids taken away I am sure it was for a good reason...but if she wasn't a good parent to her daughter what makes her think she could have done better with the grand children.
Maria, that could be the longest garbled sentence I've ever seen. Did you got to school? What a ramble!
A disgusting, cowardly act! Murdering the children because they may have a chance to a meaningful relationship with their mother. Hope the GM and Uncle are roasting in hell.
