3 teens held over destruction of 100 gravestones in Jewish cemeteries

Three teenagers have been arrested for allegedly destroying nearly 100 gravestones at Jewish cemeteries, police in Connecticut said. More than $20,000 worth of damage was caused during the attack.

Hartford Police, which started to investigate this case in mid-October, recently got a tip that three teens that live in the neighborhood were responsible and the arrests were made over the weekend.

Dozens of headstones are still toppled over at the Tower Avenue Jewish Cemeteries.

At first police investigated the case as a hate crime, but after talking to the teens, they said this was no longer the case.

Leonard Holtz, with Congregation Ados Israel, said the vandalism "basically attacked the defenseless and the emotions of those survivors."

"(The arrests) don't lessen the pain for people who have had their monuments desecrated," he added.

Holtz said visitors were still uneasy. “It has taken away the feeling that you can go here with peace of mind,” he said.

Hartford Police said that the suspects may have destroyed the gravestones while they were using it as a shortcut to a nearby park.

“It's a crime that inflicts pain and suffering on other families,” Holtz said.

'Just sickening': Vandals smash nearly 70 gravestones in Alabama cemetery

He said he wanted those responsible to be held accountable, and to understand the damage wasn’t just aesthetic.

“A cemetery should be a sacred place, holy ground, this should never happen,” Holtz added.

The names of the suspects were not released.

Give them some jail time to TEACH them about being sensitive. :)

Payback for attacks on Christian churches in Israel? The group "Price Tag" has been very active there. I believe the phrase "Jesus is a monkey" is one of their favorite pieces of graffiti to spray paint on church walls. None of this is right. Both sides are idiots.

Forget jail. They should reset all the gravestones they toppled. And when they came back again the next day have a few of them overset again. It'll give them a taste of just how hard work it was to set them to begin with, only to have someone wreck that work.

If some of the stones were destroyed, they should be set to work as a volunteer in the shops that make and carve those memorials. Seeing the process of cutting, carving, sanding and creating one of the headstones might give them a sense of how hard this is and give them a greater appreciation for the craft--who knows, maybe a couple of these kids might decide they likes working with stone. At any rate, it will take them off the streets and keep them busy--and they'll (hopefully) think twice about ever doing it again.

Mr Thanatos:

I doubt this had anything to do with activity in the larger socio-political arena. I tend to think this was just a couple of kids who didn't think about what they were doing before they did it. very few teens I know have any sort of awareness of what goes on in the US, much less the world. I heard someone talking to a couple kids about voting while on the bus last week and one kid (sixteen-seventeen, my guess) said 'Who's Mitt Romney?'.

Yesterday some of the roads in our municipality were closed due to Veterans Day parade and a kid said, "but Veteran's day was Saturday!" I turned and told the kid that he should look at the calendar or the news once in a while instead of his Facebook page.

Good Morning Mike!

You are soooooo right! That would have made front page news and the riots that ensued would have too!

Why didnt we hear of this story in October?

Why arent they being charged with a hate crime?

Why is antisemitism tolerated?

Where is Debbie Wasserman Schultz???

What ever punishment is given should be shared by the parents. What happened to teaching kids to respect people's property or considering the feelings of others? The parents should be out there working along side of their children learning that lesson as well.

Amanda, I agree they should be made to fix the gravestones (at least those that can be) and pay for new ones for those that were damaged too badly, which they can work off the money for by tending the cemetery, but jail time is also a must. They committed a crime, and a hate crime at that. Even if it is a month in jail, they need to be taught that such activity isn't acceptable in a civil society, as do any teens who even remotely think it is OK. A message to both these teens, and any who would copy them must be sent.

My recommendation:

upon conviction, they get 1-2 months jail time (no time off for good behavior), followed by 5 years probation during which they have to fix the gravestones and work at the cemetery maintaining it to pay for new headstones/grave markers for any that were damaged beyond repair. Also, make sure the names are released to the public. Some public humiliation for this act is in order. That is justice. I'd also like to see the Judge fine their parents a good deal of money as this starts at home. If the parents are unwilling to raise their children to know this is wrong, then the parents are equally to blame. As such, they also need to pay so justice is served.

@Mike, this is a vile case, and it doesn't matter who is buried in that cemetery. The act was both against the memory of those buried there and against their living relatives. It would be a hate crime no matter who's cemetery it happens to belong to, as it was singled out. They didn't do this to a mixed religion cemetery, or one with no religious affiliation. They chose to do this to a Jewish cemetery, but any similar cemetery would be just as bad.

@ Thanatos. these are teens, they likely know nothing of those attacks that happened months ago. they did this because they were never taught any better by their parents. It is as simple as that. Teens in the US don't watch the news, not that those attacks got much coverage here.

Welcome to Romneyville and Ryantown cities in the USA where hate rhetoric is a common everyday occurence...

The FAR RIGHT WING WACKO Republican Party way of life is spreading across America...

This new outbreak of hate the JEWS, NON-WHITES, and anything NON-CHRISTIAN all gained momentum when Obama was elected for his 1st term...It shows the 1950's mentality of some (too many) American citizens...

Nice job FAR RIGHT WING WACKOs...

How any of the Jewish, Non-white, non-Christian (or for that matter real true Christians - NOT the fake stand behind JESUS ones) voters would vote for the likes of Romney and Ryan beats me.?.

Face it Americans - Under the FAR RIGHT WING WACKO NUT JOB Republican Party members (Tea Party members included) America would head into insane concepts of freedom for its' many different type citizens...And freedom would not be the same for all citizens...

Thank GOD (whichever one you believe in) the Romney/Ryan ticket failed...

Support OBAMA/BIDEN and set the course towards the betterment of all its' citizens - Not just a select few...

Tax the RICH more and stop the abuse they put on the middle-class and poor...And keep religion out of government...

We really don't have the money to jail teens for nonviolent crimes. Jail doesn't rehabilitate anybody; it simply keeps violent people away from the rest of us.

They should right what they did by working it off--fixing the stones, the cemetery, and paying for the damages. If sending kids to jail made them shape up, the whole country would be in better shape since huge numbers of young men are in jail. They get out worse than they went in. Nobody died here. The lesson is in respect, and they aren't going to learn that one in jail.

And really, some of these kids are so stupid that they might not even realize it was a Jewish cemetery. They destroy things just because they are there and they can.

Rick

There is nothing to suggest this event was caused by any particular socio-political ideology. Your hatred of the conservative values is apparent and shows you to be a bitter hateful person.

The acts were done by teens. I doubt if it was a hate crime on any level, although that needs to be ascertained by authorities. It was just a group of dumb kids doing dumb things. Yes, they should be punished and made to pay. Public humiliation* should be part of it, but I doubt that jail time would be effective. Long terms of public service would be better.

*Public humiliation is best if it is short-term and intense. Longer periods may convince the kid that he is beyond redemption.

If they are over 16 hit them where they live impound their cars for 1 year and loss of drivers license for one year. If not denial of driver's lisense until 18. No matter what age make them give a public apology in their high school at a all school assembly, stand out on some busy intersection holding a sign saying "only a racist @sshole would desecrate a cemetery", 60 days in youth detention, 90 days working in a Jewish nursing home, complete restitution, and spending the entire summer May, June, July and August using old fashioned push mowers cutting the grass at the cemetery from 6AM until dark 7 days a week.

I remember when I was a teen, a friend and I got into a "dirt bomb" fight. One of the clumps of dirt flew out of my hand and hit a lamp post above a group of older women sitting on a bench. One got really mad at me. I went over to apologize and she appreciated it. I then noticed numbers tattooed on her wrist. I asked her about it and she explained to me in a way I could understand about the Holocaust. (If they were able to survive that, they weren't about to put up with rowdy teens.) Afterward, I greeted them and would sometimes sit and listen to their stories. (I was 12 at the time.) It made a big impression, because after all they had been through...they still showed compassion. These teens need to learn compassion and how others have suffered because of their faith. The lesson would be longer lasting than any jail time.

They committed a crime, and a hate crime at that

No evidence they were targeting specifically Jewish grave stones. They were a bunch of immature and misguided teenagers.

Rather than jail. They should have to spend their weekends tending the grounds of the cemetary. During the week they should be made to work and wages garnished to repair all damage done.

Then, if fail at those stipulations then they should go to jail!

Give them a chance to make a teenage mistake and make restitution before we lock them up with rapists and murderers thereby possibly sending them into a life of crime for a lifetime.

Teenagers screw up often!

Bart martin said;

According to other articles posted on this subject, the kids are 14 and 15, and they lived in the neighborhood. One article said they lived only about three blocks from the cemetery. Also, not all of the damage was done at once; see this clip from the Hartford Courant:

The toppled headstones were discovered and reported to police on October 19, but authorities believe the damage had been inflicted beginning October 12 or earlier.

This was damage done over a series of days. Probably toppled a few each time they passed through the cemetery. Different articles also have different totals; the Hartford Courant says several dozen which would be twenty-four to thirty-six; Times of Israel says 40, Connecticut Now says 'dozens', Yeshiva World said 'more than 60', and this article says 100.

I actually tend to believe the Harford Courant since they were the ones who first broke the story in mid-October, and I don't think the kids intended it in any sort religiously-based evil intent. They did it once, didn't get caught, did it again. Since in some of the pictures of toppled headstones they are very heavy-looking, it probably turned into a very childish sort of 'look what I can do' game.

Yeah, a Jewish cemetery in their neighborhood! 14 and 15 year old boys! Need I say more or are you that racist yourself that you are so eager to play the race card on a bunch of young boys.

Being STUPID isn't racist!

If this occurred in a "white" cemetery with a bunch of black or Latino teenagers I'd bet you'd sing a different tune.

They are young boys who vandalized and should have to make restitution... Not go to jail for a Hate Crime!

Dawg Pound - First of all, Jewish is not a race; it's a religion, so your first point is moot. There was some sort of indication, be it a sign, a Jewish star, something at the entrance which would make any reasonably intelligent person realize that it was a Jewish facility of some sort. Upon seeing the gravestones with Jewish stars or Hebrew or Yiddish characters on them, they probably more than realize they were in a Jewish cemetery.

I did not say theirs was a hate crime, but I am saying that they knew what they were doing - desecrating a Jewish cemetery.

The practice of withholding the names of youthful criminals only serves to encourage the behavior, as well as to create a window of opportunity for them to offend. It is high time to draw the lines between what truly is a crime and what isn't, instead of who gets punished and who gets off scot free. Why do 18 year olds get locked up for five years for selling a friend a joint, while seventeen year olds get a slap on the wrist for violent and property crimes?

What a sad commentary on some of today's youth. I see so many kids out doing good things, like washing cars to raise money for a charitable cause, while others work through community-building projects in scouts and 4-H. Many volunteer at soup kitchens, food banks and community functions. Everyday I read where some very young child raised thousands with her lemonade stand to help others. Then we read about three vandals who entertain themselves by (indirectly) hurting others. I suppose this sort of thing has been going on for centuries, but it still troubles me to wonder about the cause.

The punishment should fit the crime. These teens should be taken out and forced to reset all the stones they toppled, no machinery allowed except for levels and trowels. For those markers and stones that were damaged/destroyed, they should be made to pay for their replacements. Further, 1000 hours of community service would do them a better service than jail time. Handwritten letters, as well as public apologies, should also be included. Their parents should be counseled as to what will happen if they let their irresponsible youth run rampant again. Is that all? Maybe. But it's a start.

In today's society we treat 24 year-olds like children, but they're not. They've got to learn sooner rather than later that behaving like ignorant brats will lead to harsh consequences. You expect the CBS, CNN, ABC and other MSM to release the names? High hopes!

The Jews will have to return to Israel. That's what Bible predicts. It says just before the Return of Jesus, the Jews will gathered together in Israel and will be subjected to cruel rule of Anti Christ. Whether you believe or not, it seems the Bible may be telling something that is developing all over the world.

In France and other European countries Jews are targeted by skinheads and Muslims alike. Their cemeteries are vandalized. Their schools are set on fire. Main stream media hardly report these news in fear of Muslim and antisemitic retaliation against their reporters.

The fact is there are increase acts of violence and hatred against Jews all over the world. USA is no exception. The sad part is the Jews themselves are deluding that if news of this neo antisemitism is under wraps it will somehow disappear. That's what the German Jews thought during Hitler's campaign of antisemitism; but only 6 million Jews disappeared, not antisemitism.

Again, names not released because they are minors.

Anyone who is different from you is targeted. On the African continent where Christianity is taking hold, practitioners of the old tradtions are targeted as witches and killed. Some fundamentalist Christians send hate messages toward everyone whose views they don't belive. Fundamentalist Muslims kill Christians. Skinheads target everyone they don't like. There was an article on NBC yesterday about the Buddhist majority in Burma persecuting the Muslim minority living there, incited by Buddhist monks.

It's what you do that matters, not whose Name you do it in!

If someone visits the sick in a nursing home, is that deed worth more if a Christian does it than a Muslim?

She looked at me as she was about to get on and saw the pentagram (and I saw the cross hanging around her neck)and told me I was going to hell before she got on and the bus pulled away. But she caught her bus.

I am so tired of teens committing crimes that cause SO much trouble but then there is no true accountability because they are considered to be children. If parents truly would parent these kids, this type of thing would not happen.

Three teenagers They aren't allowed to release the names of minors, and the police may have realized that it wasn't a hate crime b/c the teens were just being stupid teens, not actually desecrating Jewish headstones for the sole fact that they were Jewish. That and it was on the way to the park that they went to, convenient fun, in their opinion.

What everyone seems to have missed, (unless they have amended the story sometime between the time previous comments were posted and my reading the article) is that the story repeatedly refers to them as teenagers, but never disclosed their ages and never referred to them as minors. They said the names of the suspects were NOT RELEASED, but never once said that their names were BEING WITHHELD because of their ages. There is a big difference. My daughter is a teenager and guess what? She voted last week because in the eyes of the law, she is considered to be an adult. People seem to forget that 18 & 19 year olds are STILL TEENAGERS but are NOT underage. Again, unless there is a previous version of this article of which I am not aware, we therefore do not know why they are withholding their names. I figure it's because the parents know THEIR properties will likely be vandalized for what their kids have done, and I almost think they deserve it. They should've raised them to be respectful of the dead.

        They're 14 and 15.

        Per the Harford Courant, who first broke the news;

HARTFORD — Police have arrested three teenagers suspected of knocking over several dozen headstones at the Congregation Ados Israel Cemetery at Tower Avenue and Waverly Street last month.

The teens, who are between 14 and 15 years of age, are each charged with interfering with a cemetery or burial ground and criminal mischief. Neither charge is a serious juvenile offense, said Lt. Brian Foley.

Each teen was issued a summons and referred to juvenile court.

"It is important to remember that this is a bittersweet day for the Jewish community; the emotional damage that this senseless act has put on these families will last a lifetime," Lisa Vaeth, director of the Association of Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Hartford, said in a statement.

"We will now have to consider investing in security measures that we cannot readily afford," Vaeth said.

Foley said the boys live in the neighborhood and would cross through the cemetery every day on their way to the park.

The toppled headstones were discovered and reported Oct. 19, but police suspect the damage occurred over an extended period of time, Foley said.

It was initially investigated as a hate crime. "However, after identifying the suspects, we do not feel that there is any anti-Semitic bias involved in this incident," Foley said.

The teens were identified as suspects from tips that neighborhood residents gave to Officer Teresa Velez, the community service officer.

Note also that the Courant says several dozen headstones; I don't understand how 'several dozen' turned into 'nearly a hundred' the NBC news article describes.

If those teenagers read the posts that show up here do you think they would have a good example to follow?

You must live in a white trash neighborhood to even think like that. You probably have been out in the sun and have a sunburn on your ignorant neck and skinhead. Not all low income families and neighborhoods breed low life bigots which it seems that you appear to be. If you think something needs to be done , get involved with the local school district and schools. There and numerous charities out there that need help and if you can get children involved in community service that would be great. Our local High School requires Seniors to do some type of community service to graduate. Most do car washes for charity. One group planted a big garden and gave the produce to the food bank. Others collected food for the food bank. Some even visit elders in assisted living and listen to how things were back in the day and it makes them realize how much easier they have it now. I live in low income community and most of the young adults come from your so called "toothless" parents and have the support of their parents. Maybe you should wake up and look around and get involved in making your little part of the world a better, friendlier place to live. When was the last time you went to or had a neighborhood potluck picnic or block party? That would be a good place to start.

My municipality makes it a requirement for all high schoolers to perform community service in order to receive their diploma. They get a list of nonprofits in their area with underage volunteer programs and the students pick. I volunteer at our local animal shelter, and you'd be surprised how many kids want to come work with the animals.

At our animal shelter we have a program where kids from the local juvenile detention center who are in for nonviolent crimes--shoplifting, petty vandalism, etc.--can come and work at the shelter during the day. A lot of these kids come in with hostile attitudes--many of them have never been taught what love is, what empathy is, how to care for another living thing because they haven't had anyone care about them.

I remember one kid who came in with a serious attitude and a chip on his shoulder. Nobody could get through to him, no one wanted to work with him (kids are paired with an adult volunteer while doing any sort of animal work) and although he was great with the animals he didn't get along with any of the people, and there was some talk of kicking him out of the program and sending him back to juvie. Our shelter director said no, give him just a little more time--to wash him out of the program would reinforce his idea that people viewed him as worthless and a failure--something his mother and father both screamed at him on a regular basis when they came to visit him in juvie, according to his records.

Then one day he came in, took a wrong turn and walked into the newly constructed Rainbow Room--the euthanasia room--and saw this metal safe that a sanitation worker had picked up by the side of the road, heard whimpering, and brought it into us. When we broke into it we found a litter of five pitbull puppies, all dead except one (it had to be about a hundred degrees in that safe, since outside temps were 90 degrees in the shade). The sanitation worker begged us to save that last puppy, and the kid begged us just as hard--we think he saw himself in that puppy, deemed worthless, unwanted, locked away and discarded.

His attitude changed completely. I've never seen someone change that fast. That puppy was the first thing he saw in the morning, the last thing he saw before he left in the afternoon. In between there was nothing he wouldn't do to help around the shelter--he knew that we're on a shoestring budget and the more hands that helped, the more money could be sent toward helping the animals. The sanitation worker was in almost everyday keeping an eye on the puppy's progress, and the two of them struck up a friendship; the worker respected that the kid was willing to put in this much time for a sick puppy he would never own, and the kid, for the first time in his life, had met an adult who respected him and thought he was worth something, and didn't automatically judge him for being in juvie.

Puppy survived, the sanitation worker adopted it, and both the worker and the kid volunteered around the shelter to help pay the puppy's medical bulls. They struck up a very close friendship--the sanitation worker became a better role model for the kid than the kid's own parents. When the kid got out of juvie a year later, he took the lessons he'd learned in compassion and self-worth and all three of them show up at our dog festivals and fundraisers, and the kid is now getting student loans to become a veterinarian (our shelter director wrote him a recommendation letter to college with this story in it.)

Love, care, consideration, patience, compassion and empathy can work miracles on someone's life, whether it be an animal or a child. Don't be so quick to judge--kids still have a lot of time to mature and grow.

My father died 4 years ago and his headstone, which was nothing extravagant, was almost 5K! With 100 stones damaged, it seems their assessment of ONLY 20K in damage is a bit off.

I thought the $20K for 100 headstones was quite a bit off too. Unless many weren't damaged, just knocked over and can be easily reset.

I think the teens should all work at resetting the stones and making the proper restitution by working it off at the homes of the families whose graves they desecrated. Winter is coming. Think of all the driveways and walks they can shovel. Think of all the grocery runs to the store these kids can make. Each should spend at least one week in servitude to each family member.

The Hartford Courant, who originally ran this story, says that 'several dozen' headstones were toppled, there was no graffiti or other damage. However, as other news sources picked it up, the number of headstones damaged has grown.

I will go with the Hartford newspaper on this one since their reporters covered the story when it first broke and their pictures, taken the day after the discovery on Oct 19, would be the most accurate. $20,000 for 'several dozen' headstones toppled would make sense. $20,000 for 'nearly 100' doesn't.

I really like the idea of having these idiots reset the stones that they knocked over and replace those that were broken, preferably by carving new ones by hand. Unfortunately, there are few craftsmen left who could teach that skill as most headstones are now made at least partially with machinery. Still, even requiring them to learn the modern craft should teach them to respect memorials to the dead and those who mourn them. They might even end their penalty with a useful skill. Beyond that, they should be required to mow and weed the graveyard, without charge, at the rate of one month for each gravestone disturbed. That would atone for their disrespect for the living community that owns the cemetery.

Paying someone else to remake the headstones or mow the lawn, would do little to impress them with the errors of their ways, and their parents would probably pay the bill, so they would learn nothing.

Odd....I don't see any comments about treating them as the punks they were and spanking their azzes!! It always amazes me that everyone, including PARENTS, are surprised at the disrespectful behavior of our youth. Coddling them from birth and insuring that they never have to know what failure or dispproval looks like is the trend of this country in raising children. No Discipline, No Adult Supervision (because the parents are too busy with THEIR OWN petty " PLEASE LOVE ME" BullSHEET), access to anything their little butts desire, and SORRY AZZED Drug / Sex / Alcohol addicted ROLE MODELS and Idols...What the hell do you expect??? If you are a PARENT. GROW UP, look in the frigging mirror and try to convince yourself that you are being responsible in raising your child. IT DOES NOT TAKE A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD, regardless of what Hillary Clinton says. It TAKES YOU!! If it takes a Village YOU LIVE IN A COMMUNE.

Try, Try, Try, silly person, where have you been? This is the 21st century! Children have no responsibility or accountability for ANYTHING. They don't have to do ANYTHING. They take NO criticism. They NEVER lose. They don't have to KNOW anything. Children don't live in fear and respect for their parents, their parents live in fear and respect for THEM and if you don't believe that they'll find an attorney to sue you. They don't study because they already know everything. Just make sure they have their expensive vehicles, their HD TV's, their iPods, iPads, iPhones and concert tickets. And we all lived happily never after.

The teenagers should first get a good whipping from their fathers -- if they have any -- then be forced to perform grounds maintenance at that cemetery (under supervision, of course) for two years, as well as repay the damage they caused.

Kids will be kids! The proper way to deal with this: Shield their identities from being made public, release them into the custody of their parents, sentence them in the juvenile court system to writing a ten-age essay about the Holocaust, and require them to write a public letter of apology. Meanwhile, hold the real culprits accountable; hand the parents the bill and charge them with some crimes. (sarcasm)

Nah... this is what I say: Strap their sorry asses to a tree in the public square and give them a Singapore-style caning, twenty-five lashes each. Then put them to work restoring the graves since they'll be in too much pain to sit on their asses all day. Meanwhile, televise it, and make sure that both their names and their faces are widely known. Maybe the next vandal will think twice before desecrating graves.
