FBI agent sent shirtless photo to Kelley before email investigation, officials say

The woman who triggered the investigation that led to the resignation of CIA chief David Petraeus threw lavish parties for top military brass – and also racked up debt. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

The FBI agent who was asked by Jill Kelley to look into disturbing emails she received was a friend of hers and never had a further part in the investigation, a senior law enforcement official said Tuesday.

The official says the FBI agent had met Kelley many months before she complained to him about the threatening emails -- allegedly sent by Paula Broadwell, Gen. David Petraeus’ biographer and a woman with whom he is believed to have had an affair.

The agent sent Kelley a photo of himself with no shirt, "as a joke, a gag" at least six months before she began receiving the troubling emails, the official said. There is, the official said, no indication that the relationship between the two was anything more than a friendship.

But the official says that after Kelley came to the agent with her complaint, he faded from the picture and was not in on the investigation. Then agents discovered the shirtless photo in her e-mails, which was reported to his supervisors, resulting in an internal investigation into whether he acted inappropriately.

He's the same agent who contacted House Republicans in October to complain that the investigation was stalled. But, the official said, the agent was far out of the loop and had no idea all of the investigative activity still under way at that point.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s office called the FBI on Oct. 31 asserting that it had heard from an FBI agent who raised concerns that the matter was being covered up or not being taken seriously.

Those who know the two women at the center of General David Petraeus' affair scandal are speaking out. Jill Kelley's brother says she is "dedicated" to her husband, while Paula Broadwell's friend calls her "a pretty great person." NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

"I was contacted by an FBI employee concerned that sensitive, classified information may have been compromised and made certain (FBI Director Robert) Mueller was aware of these serious allegations and the potential risk to our national security,” Cantor said in a statement.

Cantor's office was told that the case was being actively investigated by the FBI, and so it would have been wrong for the FBI or Justice Department to inform higher-level officials in the administration about the probe earlier -- because they were unsure at that point what they were dealing with. In the end, according to multiple officials, investigators determined there was no criminal wrongdoing.

The agent provides yet another link to Kelley, who has become a central figure in the scandal that led to the resignation of Petraeus over his affair with Broadwell: Her complaint to the FBI kicked off the investigation, and her emails with another major military figure, Gen. John Allen, have led to an investigation over allegations of “inappropriate” emails between Allen and Kelley. Allen replaced Petraeus as commander in Afghanistan last year.

The emails between Allen and Kelley do not signify the two had an affair, a defense official told NBC News on Tuesday. “There was no affair,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.  The emails in question could be misconstrued, the official said, predicting that the investigation will prove Allen’s innocence.

NBC News justice correspondent Pete Williams contributed to this report.

Ret. Col. Jack Jacobs weighs in on the scandal that has ensnared former CIA chief David Petraeus and Gen. John Allen, telling TODAY's Savannah Guthrie that Allen has a stellar career and great reputation but he "wouldn't be surprised" if his NATO nomination was withdrawn.

How many books and movies are going to be written about this. Everyone sat on this waiting for the elections.

EVERY ONE.

Only one guy and they tried to shut him up.

That guy needs a medal for putting America first.

do me a favor, put the barrel against your forehead and firmly pull the trigger, you are one of two things, just can't decide. A security guard at Walmart who plays dress up in a white sheet on weekends and just can't stand it that there is a "colored" guy in the WHITE House, living in one of those fancy houses with wheels on the bottom, or you live in your mothers basement but in your case probably the back bedroom as trailers don't have basements. Either way just loser trying to compensate for your tiny penis

Comments like yours destroy the credibility of the poster. To suggest someone kill themselves because they disagree with your point of view is sick. By the way, that tie to Obama is pretty obvious unless you are one of "those who will not see".

I do not see how any of you can tie this to Obama. You have a military groupie in Florida who becomes the tool for destroying probably her biggest coup and I am sure she was quite the name dropper with knowing all of them. Were they tapping her too, don't know. Then you have one General who did a good job totally throw his career away and marriage for someone who just used him for her own purposes and I guess he did too. Makes them both whores. I feel sorry for the Marine General but that is just me. Then you got the dumb a$$ FBI agent calling Cantor, his job should be gone too, now or he should at least finish his career in Nome Alaska. To bad for any kids involved and the embarrassment they must be going through and of course if there are any the innocent respective spouses.

Nome, Alaska, The guy should be fired for sure. He is a leak. He didn't tell Cantor to do good. They are using the wrong name for him. He is not a whistleblower. He is a spy for Cantor. That makes him useless or worse than useless. out him and fire him.

The parties that were and are involved in the US Congressman Vern Buchanan lawsuits and cases should have hired Kelley to file the internal Buchanan documents and witness testimony with the FBI and Justice. Maybe the FBI would have done something.

It seems that if you are rich, hob nob with powerful military personal, or are a pretty face you can get things done at the Tampa FBI Field office. The same office that handled the Buchanan cases and complaints.

The big question that should be investigated is why a FBI agent went directly to the republicans with the Kelley information. Is there politics being played in the Tampa Field Office. Was politics played in the Buchanan investigations.

There are many questions concerning the Tampa FBI field office. Especially with the thousands of hard internal Buchanan documents supplied by former partners, CFO, CPA's, managers and employees and their tapped testimony.

How is it that the Kelley case has moved this fast when the Buchanan case has taken years. LIKE I HAVE SAID MAYBE A PRETTY FACE AND A LOT MONEY MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Or we could make Buchanan a democrat.

I start to get the impression this woman is the Nemesis or downfall of a few guys. This seems very weird to me that the FBI has not scrutinized meticulously and published her social background and surroundings as well as her origins (the last name means nothing, she is or was married).

The fact that the FBI ruined the privacy and the private lives of these people, under the cover of concern for national security, and brings the stories out, makes the whole situation surreal. It looks more like a settlement or war between CIA and FBI.

Enough about this sordid business already. Pet. resigned and hopefuly these two women (and I use the term loosely) will soon go away. However, it will they probably won't go away until they make their millions from the books they will soon write. If I were their husbands, I'd stick around until they are written and then take them and the kids and go off to an island to enjoy the alimony I'll get!

Both organizations are out of control, run by evil, vile men whose machinations are vile and evil. It was just a matter of time before the whole thing imploded.

And now here we are. The FBI and the CIA.

We need to dismantle BOTH, jail them all or execute them all, and start over with an organization with some INTEGRITY.

Because neither of these sorry SOB's have any.

Does anybody know who the FBI agent who leaked the story to Cantor? He should be fired. Nobody in Congress had the right to know that information before the president. If the CIA and the FBI can't keep secrets, then we shouldn't have them. This agent, if he told anybody, should have informed the national security advisor -- not Eric Cantor. That isn't whistleblowing, it's spying. A leak is a spy. He wasn't doing it to do good.

Well said. It all goes to motivation. Since the Shirtless Wonder Man send pics to the Florida entertainer before she complained about emails, I believe some investigation needs to be made to determine the type of relationship the Wonder Man had with the entertainer.

SWM (as I now refer to him) had to have a motive other than simply doing his job.

If I had problems with receiving unwelcome emails, my first thought would NOT be the FBI.

I regret that this sordid mess had to become public. Something like you can't soar with the Eagles if you're hanging out with Turkeys.

                                    Tuesday February 17, 2004 11:46 PM

The former chief internal watchdog at the FBI has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl and has admitted he had a history of molesting other children before he joined the bureau for what became a two-decade career.

John H. Conditt Jr., 53, who retired in 2001, was sentenced last week to 12 years in prison in Tarrant County court in Fort Worth, Texas, after he admitted he molested the daughter of two FBI agents after he retired. He acknowledged molesting at least two other girls before he began his law enforcement career, his lawyer said.

All of the people involved have parents, spouses, children, and siblings who are really hurting because of the actions of a group of people having a midlife crisis. I do not know anything about the FBI agent. When we comment - their hurt runs deeper and reignites the hurt of the Clinton, Kennedy, Spitzer, the diaper wearing astronaut families. I think we can be better role models by not commenting and maybe their families can heal and forgive them. I guess there are midlife crisis but most people handle them respectfully and most adults really try to protect their families from hurt. We can be better if we are silent.

                                          Dec 10, 2012

BUFFALO, NY - A Special Agent working in the Buffalo office of the FBI is due in Eden Town Court later this month, after being arrested by New York State Police last Friday night, charged with exposing himself to a fellow motorist on the New York State Thruway.

State Police Lt. David Denz confirmed for WGRZ-TV that John A. Yervelli Jr., 48, of Lakeview, was charged with Public Lewdness, a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail.

According to Denz, a truck driver from central New York was traveling in the right lane while east bound on the Thruway near mile marker 442, between Exits 57 and 57A, when he noticed a grey minivan pull alongside him in the passing lane.

The trucker told police that when he looked down, he noticed the driver of the other vehicle (who had turned his dome light on) was not wearing pants.

Why dont you come forward and speak for yourselves and explain to us commoners why you dont want to contribute a small portion of your wealth to help the rest of citizens that have not been so fortunate. If you speak up and explain to the rest of us that there is a good reason to not raise taxes on " the rich" then perhaps we will sympathize with you and look for alternatives. remaining silent before and after romney makes you look BAD
