Obama slams GOP criticism of UN Ambassador Rice over Benghazi attack as 'outrageous'

Just-resigned CIA Director David Petraeus says he will testify this week at congressional hearings looking into the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as new details emerge about the emails that helped end his career. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

Updated at 4:44 p.m. ET: President Barack Obama on Wednesday spiritedly defended U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice over her response to the September attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, assailing Republican criticism of her as "outrageous."

At his first news conference since winning re-election, the president said Rice has done “exemplary work” and accused GOP critics of trying to “besmirch” her reputation.

President Obama defends U.N. ambassador Susan Rice against criticism from Sen. John McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham over the Benghazi attacks in Libya.

“I don’t think there’s any debate in this country that when you have four Americans killed, that’s a problem, and we’ve got to get to the bottom of it and there needs to be accountability. We’ve got to bring those who carried it out to justice. They won’t get any debate from me on that,” Obama said sternly.

“But when they go after the U.N. ambassador, apparently because they think she’s an easy target, then they’ve got a problem with me.”

Two of Rice’s main GOP critics refused to back down.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) discusses the Obama administration's handling of the aftermath of the Benghazi attack, accusing the president of "either a cover-up or incompetence." McCain also vowed to block any nomination of UN Ambassador Susan Rice for secretary of state to replace Hillary Clinton.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said shortly after Obama’s news conference that he had “no intention of promoting anyone who is up to their eyeballs in the Benghazi debacle.” Sen. John McCain added: "We owe the American people and the families of the murdered Americans a full and complete explanation, which for two months the President has failed to deliver.”

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice speaks during a meeting on Syria in the United Nations Security Council, Aug. 30.

Rice has been mentioned as a possible successor to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has said she will not continue to serve in Obama's second term beginning in January.

Senior Republican senators vowed earlier on Wednesday to block any future promotion of Rice, questioning her initial description of the Sept. 11 violence on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi as a spontaneous outburst rather than a planned attack as unfathomable. Killed in the violence were U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American officials.

“My judgment at this time is that four Americans were killed, and the information that our U.N. ambassador conveyed was clearly false," McCain, R-Ariz., the top GOP senator on the Armed Services Committee, told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference. "There was overwhelming evidence that it was completely false. And she should have known what the situation and circumstances were and not tell the world on all Sunday morning talk shows.”

Graham, of South Carolina, supported that stance at the same news conference, saying of Rice, "I don't trust her. And the reason I don't trust her is because I think she knew better, and if she didn't know better, she shouldn't be the voice of America.”

The two lawmakers along with Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire are pressing for a special, Watergate-style select Senate committee to investigate the Benghazi attack. They complained that separate inquiries by various Senate panels will fail to get to the bottom of the deadly incident.

Sen. John McCain took to the Senate floor to protest the potential appointment of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. At issue are Rice's comments that Benghazi was triggered by a video maligning the Prophet Mohammad. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

Rice has been the focal point of accusations that the Obama administration misled the public about the nature of the Benghazi attack. Five days after the attack, she appeared on several news talk programs and said the attack stemmed from outrage in the Arab world over an anti-Muslim video, not an act of terrorism. The White House later corrected that claim.

Obama wouldn’t comment on whether he’d nominate Rice to replace Clinton on his Cabinet. But he said of Rice: “She has done exemplary work.”

“She made an appearance at the request of the White House in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence (on Benghazi) that had been provided to her. If Sen. McCain and Sen. Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me – and I’m happy to have that discussion with them," he said animatedly.

“But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador, who had nothing to do with Benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her reputation, is outrageous.”

Shortly after the president’s remarks, Graham issued the following statement:

“Mr. President, don’t think for one minute I don’t hold you ultimately responsible for Benghazi.  I think you failed as Commander in Chief before, during, and after the attack.

We owe it to the American people and the victims of this attack to have full, fair hearings and accountability be assigned where appropriate. Given what I know now, I have no intention of promoting anyone who is up to their eyeballs in the Benghazi debacle.”

McCain said initial Obama administration statements the the Benghazi attack was triggered by a spontaneous demonstration and a hateful video “clearly did not comport with the facts on the ground.“

In a statement issued after Obama’s news conference, McCain repeated his call for a select committee to be appointed “to obtain a full and complete accounting which would be credible with the American people."

Not all Republican senators agree with the the need for a special select committee.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she did not “see the benefit” of such an approach, noting the Homeland Security Committee has governmentwide jurisdiction and “a history of producing comprehensive bipartisan reports.”

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn, said assigning the matter to a select committee at this point would be “premature.”

David Petraeus, who stepped down as CIA director last week after acknowledging an extramarital affair, has agreed to testify before Congress on the Benghazi attack. He'll go before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday and the House committee on Friday.

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, said Wednesday that he would like to hear from Petraeus but has yet to formally request a meeting with him.

NBC News Capitol Hill Correspondent Kelly O’Donnell and NBC News Associate Producer Catherine Chomiak contributed to this report.

Wow, sounds like your describing 9/11...2001! "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in United States" ring a bell? Bush tossed that report on his pile of brush at the ranch, as I recall. And those were attacks on American soil. That, my dear, is truly outrageous.

Her comments immediately after the attack give the impression that she is/was in on the cover up and promoting the "spontaneous attack" story, even though it now looks like the administration knew it to be false. There seems to be no one in this administration who can be trusted to do something as simple as tell the truth. Everyone's words are carefully contrived to shape opinion or deflect blame. Most of us would just prefer the simple honest truth and let the cards fall where they fall.

So Bush had reports that directly said that the towers were going to have planes flown into them? Sad and pathetic that you have to try and use false and incomplete stuff to try and redirect things because where they are headed is a place you can't face. That is what is outrageous.

We had reports of that embassy being targeted though. Those were ignored though. That is truly outrageous. We had a way to at least try to prevent that attack. Nothing was done to try though. That is truly outrageous. We had Bin Laden attack the U.S. before Bush took office, and on American soil. Nothing to chase him down was done. That is truly outrageous. You are willing to act as if Obama is a God and say he is innocent no matter what happens or what proof is given. That is truly outrageous.

This was a tragedy for the folks killed and their families. What is UNFORGIVABLE is blaming someone for this before the facts are arrived at. AMB. Rice simply repeated what she, the Congress, and the State Department were told. If your insider info is from Sen. Graham, what would he have said if HE had to respond on the same day Amb. Rice did?? Your zeal for a scandal is so obvious.

The Republicans don't want Justice or a fair investigation, they want an investigation that will harm the Democratic Party no matter what the truth is. This morning they called for a separate investigation committee for the Benghazi incident but before that investigation has even taken place they already know who is to blame? Anyone else see a contradiction? It's hypocrisy, it's politics, it's distraction from an embarrassing loss, it's denial of reality; these are all subjects the GOP excels in.

Why did the GOP cut 300 MILLION from our embassy budget, but can give 4 BILLION in subsidies to oil corporations? That's also a miscarriage of justice is it not?

Let's all get one thing straight.. We need accountability here, and as a democrat/supporter of Obama, we must have it. But let's not loose sight that terrorists attacked this nation, Obama did not kill these americans, and he did not use the murder of an exnavy seal like Romney did.

P.S. Did everyone demand the same accountability when we had 12 embassy attacks with 43 murdered americans during Bush? Oh wait, we have to pretend that didn't happen.

No, San Diego 1969, YOU and and #2, #3 and #4 comments on this board are outrageous, along with Sen. Graham, Sen McCain, Fox News and everyone else looking for something to hang onto in the Benghazi event - something that would make the President look bad, that is.

The pathetic attempts to keep this alive and front news are so outrageously - and ridiculously - are quite desperate, and despicable, too. But hey, you lost the election, this is good as it is going to get for you, sore losers. So, you keep spinning, looking, sniffing, inquiring, besmirching, basically looking for anything and everything to make it stick and not go away - we get it; you are truly desperate.

Listen, if you really want to become relevant again, you should look for some sensible gripes to complain about, really! I dunno, maybe things like natural disasters increasing in frequency and intensity - and Obama doing nothing about the climate change; NJ being "remodeled" by Mother Nature - and nobody having a clue as to how to spare it (and NYC and many other highly populated places) going forward; why America is at the bottom of the civilized world in education, health-care availability, or at the top of the world in military spending, and what it deprives us of. You know, real, important things. Not this pathetic little witch hunt that distracts all of us and accomplishes nothing.

Peace, ANV

This indignant Obama act is going a bit too far. His problem is he thinks he is smarter than anyone else, classic narcissistic behavior. Susan Rice was lying her ass off at the WH's direction and so was Petreaus for some unknown reason. Petreaus probably didn't know the WH was going to fire him a month later.

Then Obama goes in the Rose Garden on 9-12 and now says he called Benghazi terrorism. Why did he go on a bunch of shows and proclaim it wasn't terrorism after he now says he said it was terrorism on 9-12.

The Obama foreign policy is nothing more than a clusterf#@k of contrasting fairy tales. The same thing happened when the Navy Seals killed bin Laden. Everybody in the administration was bending over taking bows while they told different versions of events. Professionals would have let the DoD tell one version and leave it at that. There are good reasons Obama is called The Amateur.

To Mike SA, John and their ilk:

I'd say the main diff between 911 and Benghazi is that on 911, the whole country stood together against an attack on our country. The dems didn't showboat and place blame on the admin. It was all of us and it was a beautiful thing that the country joined together. Perhaps president Bush's administration dropped the ball. But the dems didn't try to make political hay. The country stood together!

When Benghazi occurred all we get from the Republicans is criticism of our government. Perhaps president Obama's admin dropped the ball. But instead of standing together against an attack from the outside... From the git-go, all we hear is them trying to make political hay out of this horrific event.

Disgusting!

Republican obstrucionists prove, yet again, that they have NO desire to solve problems,...

Just restrict any confirmations on "That Ones" appointments.

Their phony outrage never looks back to the failings that led to a true NATIONAL failing like September 11th; but requires that the President personally protect four individuals on foreign land.

Anyone with a minor grasp of the situation sees this for exactly what it is - the DESPARATE need to knock President Obama off his game. By hook or by crook, they don't care.

And they CLEARLY don't care about the Ambassador or the other three men. Just pawns in their Scorch the Earth campaign to hate the President and his appointees.

The comical part here is where they claim they will block his appointments. This is NEW strategy how, exactly? Hasn't that been their MO since January 20, 2009?

To those of you who claim to know the facts and claim the administration is not telling the truth, please refer to 9-12-12 report on Benghazi from Reuters correspondent Hadeel Al-Shalchi.

This is from someone who was there, on the ground, in Benghazi. Unlike you, unlike me.

An excerpt follows:

Accounts from Libyan and U.S. officials, and from locals who watched what began as a protest on Tuesday against a crudely made American film that insults the Prophet Mohammad spiral into violence and a military-style assault on U.S. troops, point to a series of unfortunate choices amid the confusion and fear.

The actions of Libyan former rebel fighters assigned to help guard the lightly fortified compound may also face scrutiny. Libyan officers suggested that sympathy for the popular anger at the slight to their religion, as well as simple fear under heavy fire, meant the guards may have done little to defend the walls.

Much remains unknown, notably the extent to which armed militants may have prepared in advance for an attack as opposed to merely profiting from the opportunity of an angry crowd spinning out of control in a country where guns are everywhere.

I have made this point before that when you are at the beginning of an investigation you do not show all your cards. When a sherrif does not reveal all he knows to the public so the perps will not have advantage, is this lying?

The players in this attack were caught at their headquarters by the citizens of Bhengazi. They stayed put. She said what they told her to say so the terrorist would not go on the run, guess what it worked as they caught others involved.

There was no reason to lie. I am glad to see Obama on the offensive now. Simple. Investigate it. Let the chips fall where they may. All of us speculating who might get it is over blown. If Obama offered up Rice knowing he was feeding her lies to feed to the public, then that will come out - and she's toast. He can bluster, but it will be his fault if he set her up.

If not, she'll be confirmed.

What's the problem? That's what confirmation hearings are about.

The bigger drama is if the "CIA Annex" (whatever that means) populated by non CIA ex Seal "contractors". Were they doing things we've deemed illegal, and who know about it? Is that why we didn't send troops there. That's the battle that raged hours. The ambassador was already dead. But these guys might have been saved.

Did we deny support for American citizens because they were engaged in illegal activities at an illegal CIA facility at our behest? I hope not - on all counts. Sarah-

Why, nearly a week after the attack, did the CIA provide senior administration officials with talking points that portrayed the Benghazi incident as a spontaneous attack fueled by an anti-Islam video?

• Why was the consulate so unprotected and so poorly guarded, when the CIA had an “annex” manned by dozens of agents less than a mile away?

• What did Petraeus learn from a late-October trip to Libya, and why has the report he is said to have written after the trip not been made available to congressional intelligence leaders?

• Did Petraeus’s affair with his biographer, and then the complications of an FBI investigation, ever pose a national security threat or in any way have an impact on the CIA’s response to the Benghazi attack?

This is directly from Congress.

So Obama says the Whitehouse sent Susan Rice out to the talk shows to explain Benghazi (even though he also said she knew nothing about it - "so come after me, not her"). Obviously the Whitehouse knew what Rice was going to say and it has been proven multiple times from multiple sources that the "video" reason was a lie. So 1+1=2 The Whitehouse sent out a pawn to tell lies about the Benghazi attack. Ther can be no doubt about it now that the President admits it!

The personal attack on Susan Rice Outrageous?

No, Mr. President. It should be on you, because you made the UN Ambassador go out on News Programs 5 times humilating this woman,, and told her to lie---"The Film Lie".

She is not fit to fill a Secretary of State Cabinet Position. How will the American Public ever believe her "next" story when there is a calamity of huge proportions. It's all about "Lies", and more Lies, still coming to what he thinks is a stupid American Public.

She doesn't deserve this important decision, because now her Credibility has been ruined. All she did was follow your Orders.

Put her somewhere else, that has nothing to do with the Fragility of our Foreign Affairs--There is Chaos, War, The Petraeus Scandal never really explained, the constant War in Afghanistan. The Military will take her credibility very lightly, and so will other Leaders of Countries. They don't like being lied to either.

Fire her--she is baggage to your Administration. Start with a Clean Slate for Cabinet Positions. You don't owe any of your friends anything, Mr. President. Americans want a strong, unbiased Leader.

Just telling the Truth.,

Why, nearly a week after the attack, did the CIA provide senior administration officials with talking points that portrayed the Benghazi incident as a spontaneous attack fueled by an anti-Islam video?

I don't know. NOR DO YOU. That's the point. An unanswered question is NOT evidence of wrong doing. It's UNANSWERED. Wait for the investigation to play out. There could be any number of reasons we don't know about or haven't pondered.

Why do see an unanswered question and assume by it very nature as "unanswered" it's considered evidence of wrong doing.

• Why was the consulate so unprotected and so poorly guarded, when the CIA had an "annex" manned by dozens of agents less than a mile away?

See answer above.

• Did Petraeus's affair with his biographer, and then the complications of an FBI investigation, ever pose a national security threat or in any way have an impact on the CIA's response to the Benghazi attack?

See answer above.

I'm not saying there aren't legitimate questions that we need to answer, but simply because YOU don't have the answers, or the investigation isn't complete yet, doesn't mean there was any wrong doing.

John,

See there you go again. You have no evidence of any "sweeping", yet you assert it as fact.

Gregario,

That has nothing to do with anything.

If I had a loved one killed over there, I'd want the person who did it dead. Just like if I had a family member murdered, I want the @!$%# who did it dead.

Why??? Because that would be personal. The problem with your logic is that FACT FINDING INVESTIGATIONS, in order to FIND FACTS, CAN'T be personal.

They have to be thorough and impersonal. And, by the way, who were the members of congress who voted to cut funding to the state department???

soxfan said;

Hey Job1, regardless of your political leanings to call John McCain a d-bag is just outrageous. Here is a man who spent years is a North Vietnamese prison, being starved and going through the horrors of torture while in the service of his country. You couldn't carry his jockstrap. Ingrate.

While I wasn't there (hadn't been born yet) and my Dad, who served in Nam, isn't around to ask questions of anymore, I hesitate to put McCain on a pedestal. According to several veterans I've talked to, McCain committed treason by giving information to the enemy:

During his 23rd mission over Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, Lt. Commander John McCain was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

To relate the event, McCain later recalled that he was "flying right over the heart of Hanoi in a dive at about 4,500 feet, when a Russian missile the size of a telephone pole came up--the sky was full of them--and blew the right wing off my Skyhawk dive bomber. It went into an inverted, almost straight-down spin. -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

"I pulled the ejection handle, and was knocked unconscious by the force of the ejection--the air speed was about 500 knots. I didn't realize it at the moment, but I had broken my right leg around the knee, my right arm in three places and my left arm. I regained consciousness just before I landed by parachute in a lake right in the center of Hanoi, one they called the Western Lake. My helmet and my oxygen mask had been blown off. "I hit the water and sank to the bottom . . . I did not feel any pain at the time, and I was able to rise to the surface. I took a breath of air and started sinking again." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

After bobbing up and down, he was eventually pulled from the water by Vietnamese who had swam out to get him.

A mob gathered on shore and McCain was bayoneted in the foot and his shoulder was smashed with a rifle butt. He was put on a truck and taken to Hanoi's main prison.

After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information from him, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity. He told the officer, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

McCain was taken to Gai Lam military hospital normally unavailable to American POWS. (U.S. government documents)

"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [McCain] did not cooperate. Eventually, I gave them my ship's name and squadron number, and confirmed that my target had been the power plant." Page 193-194, Faith of My Fathers by John McCain.

Nov. 9, 1967 (U.S. government documents) Hanoi press began quoting him giving specific military information.

One report dated read, "To a question of the correspondent, McCain answered: 'My assignment to the Oriskany, I told myself, was due to serious losses in pilots, which were sustained by this aircraft carrier (due to its raids on the North Vietnam territory - VNA) and which necessitated replacements. From 10 to 12 pilots were transferred like me from the Forrestal to the Oriskany. Before I was shot down, we had made several sorties. Altogether, I made about 23 flights over North Vietnam.'"

In that report, McCain was quoted describing the number of aircraft in his flight, information about rescue ships, and the order of which his attack was supposed to take place.

And I personally don't like him considering he was one of the authors of the highly-controversial indefinite detention clause of the NDAA for FY2012.

S1867/NDAA sections 1031-1033 basically will give our government the right to have our military indefinitely detain anyone suspected of terrorist activity without charge or trial, American citizen or not, anywhere in the world, on home soil or off. And it's not just limited to anything directly affecting America--it's anyone accused or suspected of terrorist activities against American allies too, which can be interpreted to include conflicts that don't even involve America. The NDAA also gives the department of Defense $600 billion to implement these changes with.

Senator Carl Levin (D) and Senator John McCain (R) wrote it, allegedly in secret, and it was sponsored into the House of Representatives by Representative Howard McKeon (R). The House of Representatives passed it in May 2011, 32-96, and the Senate passed it on Tuesday 93-7.Since the two versions of the bill are a little different, they just need to reconcile it and send it to President Obama to sign. Obama has said that he is going to veto it, but Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 vote.

Indefinite detention without charge or trial is clearly unconstitutional since the Constitution states that 'No person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process'. Therefore, in my opinion he is now also committing treason by violating his oath as a public official to uphold the constitution.

Sarah,

I can give you a perfect example that proves Obama is a liar.

During the 2nd Presidential debate, Obama specifically stated that the called the attack on the Benghazi consulate "an act of terror" and attempted to claim that he and his administration knew it was a terrorist attack.

Anyone who watched the debate knows this.

If that is the case, why did Obama and his administration continue to say it was a "spontaneous riot" caused by a controversial film clip that denigrates the Islamic faith...and continued to play that card for over a week after the attack?

Regardless of any other information that comes out, this is more than enough proof that this administration is engaged in deceitful practices. After all, why would you continue to claim the act was "spontaneous" if you KNEW it wasn't?

I know politicians lie as a matter of course and are rather pathological about it on both sides of the political aisle...but this is absurd.

@ Sarah;

They never show one lie straight from the president. I have asked for weeks and not one has shown me one lie, with source or quote. lol

All I get is he said it was the movies fault.lol

Obama does not even mention the film once in the rose garden speech. His speech to the U.N on Bhengazi only states that the film "caused an uproar in the ME" never in either speech does he blame the film directly. Nor does he state one lie.lol His speech at the Rose Garden was eloquent and moving, and provided solice to the families that did not want this as an issue in the race.

How many on this vine bashing Obama would go against the advice of two generals in the area and your SOS, to not send troops in?

Im guessing not many. I bet Obama did want to do something, but you do not rebut your generals and SOS advisement in an unkown fluid situation.

Hey Hudson3324

How's this for pathetic, Good ole wiley Bill Clinton's screw up on Bin Laden

In his stunning 2003 book Dereliction of Duty, Air Force Lt. Col. Robert “Buzz” Patterson, a presidential aide and carrier of the “nuclear football,” describes President Clinton’s gross irresponsibility toward national security. Patterson tells how, in the fall of 1998, the watch officer in the White House Situation Room notified the president’s national security adviser, Sandy Berger, that they had located bin Laden and had “a two-hour window to strike.”

Here is Patterson’s chilling account:

Berger ambled down the stairwell and entered the Sit[uation] Room. He picked up the phone at one of the busy controller consoles and called the president. Amazingly, President Clinton was not available. Berger tried again and again. Bin Laden was within striking distance. The window of opportunity was closing fast. The plan of attack was set and the Tomahawk [missile] crews were ready. For about an hour Berger couldn’t get the commander in chief on the line. Though the president was always accompanied by military aides and the Secret Service, he was somehow unavailable. Berger stalked the Sit Room, anxious and impatient.

Patterson continues:

Finally, the president accepted Berger’s call. There was discussion, there were pauses – and no decision. The president wanted to talk with his secretaries of Defense and State. He wanted to study the issue further. Berger was forced to wait. The clock was ticking. The president eventually called back. He was still indecisive. He wanted more discussion. Berger alternated between phone calls and watching the clock.

The dithering continued until it was too late–and bin Laden lived to fight another day. And to plot the Sept. 11 attacks.

Not heeding the warnings very plain to see and securing or removing our people is a massive failing of the current administration. Certainly not the first time an administration has failed to heed warnings. But defending this failing by pointing out another still doesn't make either situation right. All it points out is the our government fails to learn from its mistakes regardless of who made them. But failing to heed the warnings is one issue, coming out with a known to be bogus story on why it happened can never be tolerated or justified. The Obama administration stuck to a story they knew full well was false, and that is as egregious as it gets.

It would appear that the people comparing Obama's use of intel and Bush's use of intel are hypocrites. Bush went to war based on intel that there were WMD in Iraq. Obama released statements on the embassy attack based on intel. You support Obama's use of intel , but not Bush's (and may I remind you, Bush had the support of the congress and the senate based on this intel). Before you go spewing your hate, decide if you are planning on having your cake and eating it too.

The Libyan people know who did it and went after them. This is just another GOP witchhunt.

The militias, a legacy of the rag-tag popular forces that fought Qaddafi's regime, tout themselves as protectors of Libya's revolution, providing security where police cannot. But many say they act like gangs, detaining and intimidating rivals and carrying out killings.

Militias made up of Islamic radicals like Ansar al-Shariah are notorious for attacks on Muslims who don't abide by their hardline ideology. Officials and witnesses say fighters from Ansar al-Shariah led the attack on the U.S. consulate, which killed Amb. Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

After taking over the Ansar compound, protesters then drove to attack the Benghazi headquarters of another Islamist militia, Rafallah Sahati. The militiamen opened fire on the protesters, who were largely unarmed. At least 20 were wounded, and there were unconfirmed witness reports of three protesters killed.

Earlier in the day, some 30,000 people filled a broad boulevard as they marched along a lake in central Benghazi on Friday to the gates of the headquarters of Ansar al-Shariah.

The fake Benghazi "scandal" is just another FAILED Republican conspiracy theory....

Gold Bars, I think it was pretty clear to most Americans that this was a terrorist "9/11 anniversary attack" by Jihaddists. There is nothing fake about our ambassador's dead body being dragged in the streets of Benghazi by Islamic radicals. Seeing the Administration sticking to the Internet video as the cause, and it being a spontaneous mob for several weeks was in insult to all American citizens. The Ambassador asked for additional security and it never came. He died due to the lack of response from the administration.

To make this issue a personal one about Rice is the wrong thing to do. Somebody told her to stick to the video story, she just followed orders, but from who? That is where the focus of this issue should be on.

As far as the Fast & Furious, if the president & Holder had nothing to hide, why plead executive privelage?

Some voters in Philadelhia were intimidated by the New Black Panther in front of the polling entrance dressed in paramilitary garb and holding a billy club. that is not a conspiracy theory, it is reality. If he was hanging out at my polling entrance I am sure he would have been asked to leave as he was blocking the entrance, loitering etc.

I would have loved to see him try something with me at my polling location.

Sarah - I can make that assertion, here's how. Since the attack at Bengahzi we've heard a series of comments from the administration- the first two weeks stating that the attack was because of the video, then an evolving statement towards terrorism. Next we learn that the attack took place over the course of 7 hours and that no support was provided to those in the compound and later at the safe house. We've learned that there were available forces in the region, we've learned that there were requests for help, and we've learned that the CIA agents in the area were told by someone to stand down and not get involved. We've learned that the State Department chose not to spend their allocated $100 million in embassy security upgrades and did not act on the intel they received around Sept. 11th, the local intel that Steven's was sending on growing militant actions in Libya, the issue of disappearing arms in the area (why the two seals were there), and Libyan reports of a likely attack soon. We've learned that there were drones in the area watching events and sending real time video back to the states. We've learned from former CIA personel that there are specific protocals regarding attacks, where the emergency calls go, whom gets to know about them, whom goes to situation rooms to watch, etc. so clearly there are measures that take place once any situation arises of value. We've learned that post the attack the US didn't attempt to control the compound and that Steven's papers were found by media visiting the site two weeks later. We've heard of a formal investigation and that the US is seeking the apprehension of people involved, but a reporter weeks later found a local boasting of being involved and interviewed him (not running from the US).

So to answer your question: If there is a national security protocal to identify, review, and coordinate personel during an emergency (including video and direct communications with the ground), then over the course of 7 hours the White House should have known that the attack was a bit more than an uprising using large forces and sophisticated arms. Yet someone put Ms. Rice out in front of the media making consistant statements on the administration's position, Secretary of State Clinton did as well, as did President Obama- eventually speaking to the UN. Then SOS Clinton claimed responsibility for the mistakes, but the President took the blame away from her. Then the blame was shifted to the CIA again, and so on and so on. Yes, I don't think there's anything less then keeping the target shifting to cover butts and set up cover to put before Congress. Now Petraeus is put out there as having affairs (while the FBI apparently knew about them while vetting him for his CIA directorship) and isn't going to testify (or be trusted when he testifies), SOS Clinton is in Australia "resting" and can't make it, etc. etc. people are suddenly not available. Not good.

Joe,

No, YOUR timeline is nothing but YOUR timeline. We've all seen what's gone down in the media. We've seen it evolve just like you. What makes these accusations slanderous, is that some of you are looking at that timeline as evidence that the same timeline is somehow a cover up, an attempt to mislead, or a wrongdoing.

Considering Obama has gotten 99% of what's he's sought, you'd think the economy would be booming now and the world would love us. The only thing he hasn't gotten is raising taxes on the job producers. His thought is that obviously taking money out of the hands of those who create jobs will create more jobs. It's amazing that it is this 1% that is holding the economy up.

As for the Bengazhi thing, it's 1,000 times worst than Watergate (where no one died) and yet we are to reward the big lie that it is the US's fault for the murder of our Ambassador?

WHY was an ambassador at a consulate on the 11th anniversary of 9/11/01 in the first place? Why was he not at a relatively safe embassy? Why would he go out on such a day with so few security personnel? Wasn't there many demonstrations about that crude film during the same time in many other cities and countries? Could the actual terrorists have conjured up these demonstrations as a cover for their attack? Why was embassy security funding cut? Who was the first congressman to dream up this cut in funding? Why was it Libyans who arrested many of these terrorists shortly after? Why did they apologise for the attack happening in the first place? Why was there reports that the Ambassador was dragged around and even raped? Isn't it true he died of asphyxiation caused by fire? Isn't it true Libyans tried to help the Ambassador when he was found still breathing? Why do they call it the Grand Old Party when there isn't anything grand about it at all anymore? Why is when the first comment is collapsed the who thread goes down? Why is it people seem to hate the first amendment? I will copy this an post it in another thread...

Did the press ask the President any follow up questions? Will the press ever do their job or will they just keep reporting the kigs proclamations?

Bush had to answer questions from Helen Thomas and all of the other press but I never see this president answer questions just give statements and speeches.

My earlier post -

more than 200 US marines died...in 1983 due to a terrorist attack...but Reagan has since become a Republican hero??

...loss of all the marines was bad....and the recent loss of our ambassador is bad enough... but unfortunately, many conservatives have tried to score political points, instead of uniting behind our president in time of tragedy - I have to question these conservatives' patriotism and judgment.

We don't need bigoted, racist, selfish, angry, do-nothings hanging around. Form your own country with your military dictatorship government. Then, good luck surviving without the government handouts you're so used to getting.

For crying out loud, I wish the GOP/TP would stop with the chronic criticism of everything with this Administration and start being part of the solution to some things instead of just adding more weight and burden to every single issue.

Stop pointing Repub/Tea Party fingers and get to work the divisive issues within your own Party.

Toxic Chemist - Amanda is correct.

Republicans, the references to Bush and 9/11 are valid and appropriate because all of this started there. After 9/11 the country and world came together. Then the war in Iraq killing thousands of Americans and tens-hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis. Any complaints about that unfunded and unfounded war of choice were met with accusations of non-partiotism / hating the troops. Typical republican propaganda. Now that the profiteers have profited and the deficit has exploded due to these wars and following economic crash on Republican watch, every move by Obama is vilified - even though he is the one who gtook on this piece of crap from Bush/Cheney. If Obama is so incompetent, wy couldn't McCain/Palin beat him in 2004? And if Obama is so incompetent, why couldn't Romney / Ryan beat him in 2008? Obama was President and ran a winning campaign, while Romney the great white hope had only one job, the campaign, and FAILED. And Karl Rove's explanation - the Dems obstructed the vote - lol The standard Republican propaganda is to blame the other side of what you do.

Republicans should be ashamed on not being able to beat Obama since you all think he is so pathetic? Look in the mirror if you want to see pathetic.

9/11 , several embassy attacks, two unfunded wars - hundreds of thousands dead, major economic crash and no Bin laden under Bush/Cheny.

Wars ending, Bin laden dead, economy recovering, and no more pre-existing conditions under Obama.

And despite every hateful unpatriotic (treasonous) attempt to foil this President, he is re-elected and make promise.

So, who is going to be seen as the failure in the history books??

The ongoing lies and deceit by this administration is now getting to the point of absurdity !

One time they tell us they cannot answer questions because of an "ONGOING INVESTIGATION", but that does not prevent them from postponing any such "results" from the investigation until AFTER the election is over.

Then, of course, we have Rice, Hillary Clinton and Obama all trying to convince us of the fairy tale that it was caused by an anti-Mohammed film clip ... one that few people have apparently ever seen ! Why would they all LIE and LIE REPEATEDLY if they truly didn't know the truth ??

The real truth appears to be "the TRUTH" is they wanted to hide and cover up the reality of what happened because of an impending election that Obama just had to win ... at ALL costs !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read recently where Texas is petitioning to secede.

I have an idea...

Why don't we all start a petition to charge McCain and Graham and all the people that are saying the same thing they are with Treason? Why don't we create a petition to deport them, strip their citizenship, and banish them for being treasonous, unpatriotic, subversive anti-Americans?

By the standards of the Greedy Obstructionist Party, they've done far worse than Natalie Mains did when she said she was "embarrassed that the President is from Texas" and they all clamored for her to be charged with treason! They all jumped up and demanded her group's records be banned (and in many instances, held "Dixie Chicks CD Burning Parties"!) Natalie Mains suffered death threats, and was said on the floor of the U. S. House of Representatives to have committed treason.

McCain and Graham (and many of you other nutjobs) are saying far worse about the President of the United States, and so you all ought to be charged with Treason and deported.

I'm disgusted by the huge amount of vulgar criticisms of the sitting President I see now.

Vile, slanderous tirades made by the same people who were horrified and aghast over the comments made by Natalie Mains. You want it both ways when it suits you. I don't see the first right-winger here vilifying anyone for slandering the President of the United States. Instead, they all kept repeating the totally discredited statement that he is not a natural-born citizen, that he's a muslim, and that he is not the President. You think we're all stupid, and you tell us so constantly.

Well, people… You can’t have it both ways. You cannot demand that Freedom of Speech only applies to you, and your opinions.

Freedom of Speech is when you can stand up and defend at the top of your voice, someone else standing up and screaming at the top of his or her voice, that which you would spend a lifetime opposing.

You want Freedom of Speech? Then you damn well better start defending MY right to state my opinions and beliefs, without interference, denigration, demeaning labels, insults, name-calling, or your vile and hateful disdain.

Defend that.

Instead of sniping and snarling at those of us who believe in a having a more fair, more open, and more populist government, why don't you find a way to shut your hateful mouths and stop subversively obstructing the President of the United States? He won the freaking election, both in the Electoral College AND in the Popular Vote. And that is that. A one-vote win would have been a mandate. Period.

The lot of you spent the past four years standing up and screaming that you wanted to do nothing else but make the President a failure. You never once ever said you wanted to do anything for the good of the country, and you fought tooth and nail to work against the better interests of this great nation, based solely on ideology. That's treasonous, subversive, and just about as anti-American as you can get.

If you don't like what's happening in the United States right now, you have two choices:

  1. You can put your petty political ideology aside and start working in support of the President.
  2. You can move your sorry butt out of the country.

I hear that Afghanistan and Somalia are nice this time of year.

Either way, you are NOT part of the solution, you ARE the problem.

The Greedy Obstructionist Party is doing everything they can to accelerate the failure of the United States of America, and they're doing it based on one thing: Ideology. That is as unpatriotic and treasonous as you can get.

How can you claim to love America, when you clearly hate the average American?

Who in the hell is defending Bush I’m not and I voted for Bush. This isn’t about Bush it is about Obama and his administration lying about this whole ordeal and I voted for Obama first time around. Just because Obama says there was no cover up doesn’t make it true.

Use your brain and look at what was actually said and I think you will understand the outrage. There is no doubt in my mind there are many liberals that see through this and don’t support what is happening. As I said above, I voted for Bush, he was the main reason I voted for Obama because of his “cowboy” attitude.

I am smart enough to separate fact from fiction and I would encourage all of you to do the same instead of showing support just because you are an Obama fan. Wrong is wrong it isn’t dependent on who is responsible for this tragedy. If it happened to be a Republican President and he and his administration we telling lies would you still support this debacle? I am guessing you wouldn’t.

    @John;

Then tell us John how did Obama himself screw up? The dangers in Bhengazi were increasing by the day, they had already been granted more security in Feb, and April. They were told a thnjird requwest would not be granted before they asked. They asked anyway and I cant blame them, but do not sit here and tell us tghe extra security was not granted because it already had been twice.

Even Wood the former security liason there said that he did not think extra security would have made a difference that night. Do you know better than him John. Now tell us how Obam screwed up.

      #1.108 - Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:38 PM EST

      Okay, once again, slowly.

Stevens never asked for more security for the consulate in Benghazi. He asked for, and was denied, increased security for the embassy in Tripoli. This decision was made by a mid-level bureaucrat in the State Department.

When Ambassador Rice was on the Sunday morning talk shows, she was reporting from the most current CIA briefings. At the time she was speaking on television, she was giving the most correct and up-todate information available. (The same information given, by the way, to the House and Senate committees on foreign affairs and national security, so McCain, Graham, et al. know they're lying.)

The CIA still doesn't believe that this was a well-planned attack. They believe this was a budding terrorist group that was looking for a way to make a splash. They were well-armed in the wake of the civil war in Libya. They saw the demonstration in Cairo over the video and, in light of the date, 9/11, decided to use this as the opportunity to launch their vile attack. They were trying to get noticed by Al Qaeda or Hezbollah or somebody.

No American support troops were sent in because Libyan security forces were already on the ground defending the consulate and there was a fear that friendly fire casualties would make the situation worse. 10 Libyans died defending our consulate.

The paranoid rantings on Faux News and by Rush Limbaugh et al. are clearly partisan snipes at the President. They lost the election and were flabbergasted that their propaganda over Benghazi didn't swing things their way. They seem to be most concerned that the President didn't use the word "terrorism" enough. Apparently, he should have said "terrorism" in every sentence and raised the threat level to Orange.

This is a nonsensical witch hunt stemming from nothing more that sour grapes.

And by the way, there are many, very many, of us in red states that are embarassed and saddened by the ignorant, racist ravings of our fellow citizens that are calling for secession.

So I guess you support the same thing for XPres. Bush. He originally said that they had WMD, but I read somewhere that he knew that they did not & wasn't there a report that said he had knowledge that they wanted to attack us on our soil.

I am sorry that the ambassador & the 3 others died, I am sorry that thousand of our soldiers & thousand of innocent people died in 2 unfunded wars, let the committee that checks into this, do what they are paid to do. None of us were there either in Benghazi or in the war room with President Obama, none of us really knows what was seen, written or told about it at the time it happened & instead of throwing accusations, theories & going on a witch hunt, give it time to tell it's story.

Gee, what a coincidence. Anyone notice how whenever a president enters his second term, the other party starts throwing crap against the wall to see what they can make stick? Usually resulting in some ultimately petty scandal that distracts the country and immobilizes the administration for the rest of it's term?

            Nixon/Watergate

            Reagan/Iran-Contra

            Clinton/Monica Lewinsky

            Bush/Weapons of Mass Destruction

Now with Obama just re-elected a week ago, they are trying to play the Libyan Embassy murders, and figuring out if they can get any traction out of Gen. Petraeus affair.

It must be a standard play from the political play book. Anything to distract us from the real serious issues, like the economy, the looming tax increases, the budget deficit.

The republicans aren't doing anything that the democrats don't do, yet we fall for it over and over. Time to wise up and make these people tackle the problems we elected them to work on.

The two lawmakers along with Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire are pressing for a special, Watergate-style select Senate committee to investigate the Benghazi attack.

              Note to the rethugli-cons:

Enough playing politics. Quit the BS and get to work on this country's economy, creating jobs, and fixing the taxcode. That is what you were hired for.

Hey NC, you're as big an idiot as Graham/McCain/etc. They need to realize America is fedup with their antics.

Text of an Email I sent Senator McCain:

Dear Senator McCain, I saw your comments on the senate floor this afternoon concerning the Benghazi incident and for the first time in my life was compelled to write an elected official. Sir, I found your comments deeply offensive and an insult to principals of American fairness. Rather than go on a witch hunt, you would have better served your fellow Americans by suggesting an independent non-partisan investigation. Instead, you chose to politicize a tragedy. It would appear that you have already passed judgement. Have you? If so then present your evidence clearly and concisely to the American People and at the very least comport yourself like the statesman you portend to be.

              Rice Lied, People Died.

This woman went of FIVE Sunday News talk shows and claimed with a straight face that the "Video made them do it". I saw one of the shows. We now know that the White House was aware this was an act of terrorism days before Susan Rice was trotted out to tell tall tales.

Senior diplomats need credibility. That's really all they have. We expect a hack like Jay Carney to feed us all the party line. That's part of the game. I don't know what she knew, but we all know what the White House knew. But for your UN ambassador to be sent out there telling falsehoods reflects very poorly on her and on the White House. She should resign in fury after being forced to lie to protect this president.

Criticism of Ambassador Susan Rice over her remarks at the UN is certainly unwarranted because she was only making the statements that the incompetent fraud in the white house ordered her to make.

Place the criticism where it belongs.

Tonybeerm, if any of you unpatriotic cowards cared about national pride and exemplary you would never had said this:

Republicans to try and deflect the fact that their party is a mess and being kicked to the curb.

I have a better response to your disgraceful quote, cowardly liberal:

Democrats try and deflect the fact that their party is an incompetent and corupt mess and they should be kicked to the curb.

It may be time for the Senate (Democratic controlled, for anyone that missed the election) to hold hearings on the Republican attempts to undermine the President. And thus.the US government with him. Its time for a showdown with these thugs. Our President won re-election with over half the American people voting for him,and a landslide in electoral votes. Without Republican voter suppression and Sandy, his vote would have been even higher. The American people spoke, and said no to Republican obstruction.

The Republican party in Congress needs to behave as opposition parties in a democracy are expected to behave,as a LOYAL opposition. Their treasonous plotting needs to stop,or be stopped. I'm more than happy that the President is willing to fight back against these bully boys. He can feel sure that the American people have his back in this fight. If the Republicans want a fight over their attacks on the President, they need to learn its a fight they will lose.

When Romney had his behind closed doors 47% meeting, one thing he said was he would take any advantage of a middle east "incident" to attack the President. Now the loser Republican party has jumped on the bandwagon. If you don't have the truth on your side, just dangle shiny objects. The ambassador was saying what the intelligence reports had said, nothing more. Romney of course, was out just hours after the attack and spouting what?, he knew nothing, but felt it had to be bad for Obama. (oddly a few honorable Republican ex-state department folks criticized Mittens for that).

Lets have the investigation, as the President has said. Lets not allow another Republican witch hunt. You'll are nothing but partisan hacks and try as you may there will be four more years for you to cool your heels, meanwhile, you had nothing to say for eight years of lying BS. I wish Pelosi had held investigations into the very real felonies of the Bush administration, but then we as a nation needed to move on, there was a real crisis to be dealt with, another Republican steaming pile.

Its as if they have to shout and point and fingers because otherwise they know that no one is paying any attention to them.

The President should just laugh off their immaturity and go ahead with figuring out the best way to take care of some of these things without their help.

The GOP is growing more irrelevent every day. And the Tea Party -- we should just squash that like a bug.

Until then I expect the members of the House and the Senate to continue pressing for the truth.

billy 234 - I think you're just a tad bit confused. Let me spell it out for you. Eight days ago, we the American people overwhelmingly voted President Barack Obama another term. By over 100 electoral votes and nearly 3 million ballots. Not exactly a squeaker. So you see, we the majority, are in favor of moving forward, not backward. The tragic events at Benghazi need to be answered, but not by a partisan witch hunt bent on destroying an administration because they can't stand losing. I'll repeat it again. My advice to the Republican Party is to quit trying to make something out of nothing and get to work on the real issues. It would go a long way in making them an important political party again. If they don't, 2014 will be a floor mopping.

Ambassador Stevens never requested extra security for the Benghazi consulate. The consulate had the recommended security force, according to testimony in Congress by the man in charge of security. And the anti-Islamic video probably WAS a motivation for the attack, although the attack was carried out by a radical militia, not by protesters. The State Department erred in relying too much on the Libyans for security, and they certainly won't repeat that mistake.

That's all there was to it, basically. No conspiracy. No cover up. Those are the facts that Tweedle Dee McCain and Tweedle Dumber Graham are trying unsuccessfully to blow up into some sort of Fox Newsworthy scandal. This crap didn't work during the election. Romney not only lost, but he made a fool out of himself repeatedly by trying to exploit the deaths of Americans. He lost. And the morons who are ranting about it here are losers, too. SORE losers.

At difficult times- when getting together as a Nation and working for a common purpose is essential to all -we still get the extreme right's rejection to compromise.

It doesn't really matter by what percentage, you LOST! Get over it and get a life! Neither Benghazi nor the Economy is going to work in your favor anymore. At the end of his term, Obama is going to retire like every other President in our History. Still 4 more years of gridlock is unacceptable under our current economy.

Our problem is our present situation, not your failure to recognize that you lost the elections! Trying to damage Obama or even get an impeachment will be ineffective, destructive to our economy and a burden that none of us want or need.

If some of you right wing extremist are serious about improving our situation and getting things done, we have to focus on the U.S. right now. Forget partisanship and work on our problems or we, the U.S. will suffer-including you.

With all due respect Mr. President, if you are taking responsibility for what is passed along to the "press" and the American public, you need to monitor what is being said by your mouth-pieces. From what I understand, Rice requested to appear on all 5 shows. Seems to me like she was doing exactly what you told her to do which fits right into your plans for the next 4 years for America. Now that you are in the POSITION, you can do whatever you want no matter what laws are in place or how you affect the American citizens.

Budget with a majority??? When Congress pass legislation it has to be with a majority. Be specific of your reference because regardless of political parties, our representatives don't agree with certain legislation.

OK It is fact that the President and his staff knew within the first two hours of the attack that this was not because of the movie. They received several emails during those crutial hours about the attack and also one claiming responsibility for the attack. They knew it was terrorism. They did nothing to help those people. So don't blame the republicians for this. This was an issue before the election and got less media attention due to the election. These family members were screaming for an account of what happened. But because of the election it got swept under the table. Now it is time that the truth comes out and those with the knowledge of what was going on and did nothing to be held accountable. And personally I think that the investigation should be held by a private party with no vested interest in the out come of the investigation.

It is easy for anyone who truely wants the truth to find out. Factcheck.org is one of many sites. Try using them before you place blame where it does not belong.

There is so much anger in both sides of these comments. It is sad. I have voted in many Presidential elections starting with JFK. What happened to "Ask not what the Country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country"? There is not an infinite supply of wealthy people, what happens when they run out of money? What's wrong with being extremely successful? Shouldn't everyone strive for this? Sadly, it is true that almost half of the population don't pay any taxes (the infamous 47%). Some of these people should be contributing, a lot of them can't. I am sure a lot of people were not around for Watergate, I was. It was a bungled burglary of a Physchiratist's office, and a cover up of same. Bengazi was a slaughter of 4 Americans, and an obvious attempt at a cover-up. It wil not go away. I am hoping that there is a young version of Bernstein and Woodward digging it right now, and the families of these Americans that were killed will finally get answers.

It amazes me that when Obama is questioned not to his liking, he becomes a very nasty and beligerant man. He is such an egotistical human being is attitude is one of hate. How dare you question me is his demeanor. He has been asked for over two months to be honest with the American people and has chosen not to do so. I think Ms. Rice was used as a scapegoat and now that he is being asked to reveal the truth he can only turn to anger as a response. How long does he think he can keep this cover-up going? He wants to keep the divide going. The election is over now so lets get on with the truth, Mr. Obama.

Why exactly should we be caring what happens when wealthy people run out of money? Right now, we are running out of middle class people and a large, prosperous middle class is far more important to the country than rich people. This is what Obama is trying to fix, and what the country desperately needs.

Put this event and the cover-up of "Fast & Furious" could be O'Bama's Watergate. We can only hope. Rice, Clinton & O'Bama have lied to the American people for O'Bama's Political gain. Eric Holder has lied to Legal U.S. Citizens and should be removed from office and Charged and Prosecuted for his actions in the cover-up concerning "Fast & Furious". Citizens have died because of the cover-ups. Rice & Clinton should be immediately removed from their positions and charged with Treason. O'Bama, together with Clinton & Rice, should be charged with treason.O'Bama has truly earned the right to be Impeached or treated like a "Lame Duck" President. Major problems with both elections that put O'Bama in Office shows just how corrupt his Presidency has become. The i;llegal actions in Illionis that put him on the Ballott, his refusal to prosecute the Black Panthers for Voter Intimidation, his association with the creation of the Illegal actions of ACORN ( to whom he gave millions of Tax dollars), the curent election problems in Philadelphia where 130% of Black Voters voted for O'Bama. All of which were accepted and supported by O'Bama. He may have gotten elected for 4 more years, but can he last as President 4 more years while he continues the cover-ups and lies.

I don't understand the Republican position that this was a cover-up. There was nothing to be gained by giving the explanation that was given rather than the current explanation. But I watched Susan Rice on Meet the Press and I have to take issue with the President's combative defense of her. I'm a Democrat and my takeaway from all this is that I was either lied to on Meet the Press, or that the CIA and State Department are incompetent, and that Susan Rice is merely a cipher who reads talking points that are given to her by incompetents. Either way, I have to wonder about Hillary Clinton's competence in guiding policy at the State Department, Susan Rice's abilities, and the coherence of President Obama's policy.

But don't get me wrong. We watched 8 years of incompetence that far surpassed this under President Bush.

              James,

You have to realize that the Ambassador was reading talking points from the most current CIA report. This was not an attack by an established terrorist organization. It is a group that is trying to make a name for itself in the wake of Libya's civil war. That's why they were well-armed but poorly organized. And why the CIA didn't know anything about the attack beforehand. They are not a group that bore watching prior to the 9/11 attack on the consulate. The CIA still doesn't know very much about them. And they did get their inspiration to commit the attack from the demonstration in Cairo over the video.

There is no cover up. As you said, what's there to cover up? It's just the right wing media trying to start a scandal. Nothing more.

You know it's a sad day when we have people on this site that have NO CLUE as to how intelligence works, from gather, filtering, comparing and coming up with the truth. The sad fact that most of you here wouldn't know the truth if it bit you in the hind parts. What's really sad to me is that McCain, A military man SHOULD KNOW how this process works. Unfortunately we live in an age where everyone wants answers no matter how accurate the information so they can be the "first" to report the "breaking news" to most of us. Based on what I know and understand, here are some of the things that are factual:

              1. There was a movie made that depicted Islams in a pale light.

              2. As a result, there were protest throughout the region at ALL US embassies throughout the Middle East, NOT just in Libya.

              3. Four Americans lost their lives on a "golden" opportunity by cowards who use those protest as a cover-up to accomplish their goal. NOTE: No group has claimed responsibility yet, makes you think huh?

              4. Information was AGAIN "leaked" out to the media from "sources" they claimed to be credible but notice how the WH kept quiet until they received ALL the information from their investigation. Again Ms. Rice WAS CORRECT in her initial response based on the intelligence she currently had. It was not updated until it was CONFIRMED it was an act or terrorism.

I would say that anyone with a shred of decency would understand the need for obtaining all the facts and ONLY issuing a statement when it is presented and not call a press conference to gain some kind of "political edge". The fact is that four Americans died and I have complete confidence that the President will not rest until those that initiated the attack are brought to justice.

You have to hand it to ole Duck N' Dodge he is good at evading and answer a question with a question or hypothesis. And let's add to it... subpoena Limbaugh for stirring up sedition against the government.

And in another matter matter, subpoena everyone that tried voter intimadion or voter fraud.

Let's have the biggest witch haunt in history.

Back to reality.... we need to find out the truth of what happened in Benghazi, so it doesn't happen again. There is enough blame for both sides of the aisle. From budget cuts that didn't consider the consequences. To "rules of engagement" that weren't understood, to relying on a "new" shaky forgeign government for external security and yes, even to the idiots that funded and made the dumbass movie - your actions have consequences and you knew that, that's why you did it.

And it won't matter what facts you present to McCain, Graham, Hannity or Limbaugh - their minds are made up.... it won't matter if the investigation turns up nothing, their still pissed that the voting public bitch slapped them and re-elected Obama. And it's Obama's fault, that they didn't get their G.I Joe toys when they were kids.

Does anyone else remember Obama & Clinton posing at Andrews over Ambassador Stevens and 3 other American Citizens "Dead Bodies" wrapped in the American Flag?

America...shortly after Richard Nixon was re-elected in 1972 the Watergate Cover-up broke (which no one was actually Murdered) and within 18 months Tricky Dick was "Impeached" for lying to the American People about those "Crimes" after the fact!.....Well at least Nixon was "Honorable" enough to "Resign" when caught!

MUW--Nixon didn't have an honorable bone in his body. He resigned rather than being removed from office, which was definitely on the horizon. The repubs told him get out or else. He wasn't impeached but had he been it would have been for numerous FELONIES including obstruction of justice. You FAIL in your lame attempt to rewrite history.

And for the rest of you right wing scum, go ahead and impeach Obama. I dare you! Do that and your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will NEVER see another republikan President.

All I can think is that no on in America has ever read Machiavelli's "The Prince". The world isn't just black and white. Lying is a very useful tool. For example - I would have lied and said that it was just mob uprising. This would have served two very useful objectives - 1) Make sure no loser Americans attack other US citizens of foreign nationality such as (ahem) Sikhs (who by the way aren't Muslims), (2) ensure that the real enemies feel safe and secure all the way till I send a special forces team to exterminate them.

Instead Americans want to cry and moan instead of seeing the world for what it is. It's called realpolitik.

BTW - I'm still in awe at the gall of Sen. Graham who accuses Obama of being derelict in his duty. Last I checked, the deadliest attack on American soil was under a different president. (BTW - I don't blame Bush for the attack either. Or Katrina for that matter. @!$%# happens. I just wish we had dropped a couple of nukes over Mecca.)

Grow up - Ms. Rice is an amazing person. Most people can only hope to achieve a tenth of what she has accomplished. And once again - Grow up America. Life isn't a Disney film.

While Bush read "My pet goat".... We can do this Monday morning quarterbacking all day. It is completely fair to question what the President knew, when he knew it and if he didnt know it, why not. It's just a tad bit disingenuous coming from the same people who made excuses for the previous President for 9/11.

It's amazing how much we have all come to hate each other, how did it get to this I wonder? Well I suppose it's obvious (silly me)..... someone said in another thread that Obama won in a landslide...ummmmm, I would call a landslide 60/40, 70/30 definitely not 47/50 or whatever it was (close enough). This really spells out that half the country pretty much hates him (that's me, not afraid to say) and the other half thinks he is some sort of gift from God. It's definitely not more evident than on this website.

Liberals seem to be possessed by ignorance, have no concept of reality and wouldn't be able to smell any sort of stinky rat if it hit them in the face. It is quite disturbing reading these comments by liberals, these are the followers of the messiah, the ones who have been reigned in by the cult leader and I have to put my life and that of my children's in their hands. Never mind that, they put their own kids and lives in the hands of this numb skull and his cronies, I guess cult followers are supposed to offer up sacrifices, that's the whole point I suppose. What a horrible, nightmarish situation we are in with no way out.

This administration is a bunch of lying thugs, Rice, Petraeus, Allen (who knows how many more) were all offered up on a silver platter to distort factual reality. Hear no evil, see no evil is the Obama followers motto, the liberal type of thinking will bring our country crashing down sooner rather than later I suspect.

Ignorance is bliss I guess, I just wonder how blissful you will all see things when this house of cards comes tumbling down.

              And don't tell me I spelled something wrong, I don't give a cr*p...

Why is it when the first comment is collapsed the whole thread goes down? Why is it people seem to hate the first amendment? I will copy this an post it in another thread...it is the only way to be heard, I guess.

Interestingly the majority of states that have greater than 40% of their population covered by Medicaid/Medicare/Food Stamps happen to fall within, wait for it...states that have Republican leadership!

Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

These states all lead the nation in the greatest % of population on Medicaid/Medicare/Food Stamps. Incidentally, the vast majority of states that receive more in Federal spending than they pay in federal taxes....RED states!

*****************The largest recipients of Federal welfare dollars are the red voting states. They take $1.00 of Federal money for every $.30 that they send in.******************

              ________________________________________________

Please, explain to me how the GOP is so anti-entitlements and pro-spending cuts, when they represent the greatest offenders of federal programs for their constituents and tax cuts for the wealthy?

It's time that the BLUE states stop SUBSIDIZING the RED States. I bet most of the complainers here are from those "red" states that have a remittance deficit with the federal government (meaning that the rest of us are subsidizing them).

OF COURSE Obama is outraged at the attempt to hold him and his Secretary to the U N accountable.

IT IS NOT in OBAMA'S or DNA to admit responsibility!

THE last we had an issue like this was Mia Lai,Viet Nam. THEN the liberal press went after the U S Army with a vengence.

NOW! Americans are killed and Obama and his mindless supporters cover it up with a weak as water excuse for the reason. BUT, this time the press turns their bigotted head and blesses it, along with all the rectal cavities that support and make excuses for Obama.

According to what I heard, Ambassador Stevens and diplomatic personnel in Libya were asking for an extension for the US Security Support Team, headed by Lt. Colonel Andrew Wood, to continue in Tripoli after their second deployment extension was scheduled to end in June (the SST had already been there one deployment + 18 extra months, the diplomatic party were asking for another 18 month extension):

Asked for comment to the memo and Wood's comments, a spokesman for the House Oversight Committee told ABC News: "Diplomats working in Libya viewed security provided by highly trained Americans as critical to their safety and mission. The Oversight Committee's investigation continues to seek answers about why - even as threats against Americans increased - senior State Department officials erroneously decided such security was no longer needed."

In February, the embassy reported to the State Department that the "security environment in Tripoli remains uncertain and unstable. Although there has been a marked decrease in the number of militia checkpoints around Tripoli, the Transitional National Council (TNC) has not yet succeeded in demobilizing the multiple militias or bringing them into a centralized command and control structure. There continues to be large numbers of weapons throughout Tripoli, with gunfire heard throughout the city on a daily basis."

The State Department pushed the American diplomats to develop plans to transition its security staffing to one that incorporated more locally based assets, but its ability to do so was "severely limited by a number of factors," the February memo states, including inconsistent support from the Libyan government, no reliable "armed, uniformed host government security at our residential and office compounds," no "real progress on the policy framework required to support a transition to an armed locally engaged body guard force," silence from the Libyan Minister of Interior when it came to formal U.S. "requests for firearms licenses, training sites, or static, host nation security."

The request concludes: "Given the unstable security environment, projected staffing increases, lack of physical and technical security upgrades in place and continued high volume of VIP visits, Embassy Tripoli requests an extension" of the Security Support Team for four months, which "will allow us to implement the security transition plans recommended by the Department. A loss of SST now would severely and negatively impact our ability to achieve the Department's policy and management objectives at this critical time in Libya's transition."

Investigators are exploring whether anyone at the State Department told the Embassy specifically not to request another extension.

Am I condoning what happened? No. It was an appalling tragedy all the way around, and the blame should rest on whoever it was who made the original decision NOT to extend the SST's deployment or substitute another SST team for the departing one. But blame can also be laid at the Libyans' door, for failure to adequately protect the consulate; and for our own lack of funding. It was a systemic failure that contributed to the deaths of four people who did not have to die. I'd say that the top official at the state dept should lose their job for it (and as Hillary is stepping down, it appears this might be a factor).

But it is done and over with, and the focus now should not be on 'who's to blame' but 'how can we keep this from happening again?'

Another thing to remember is that Ambassador Stevens was dedicated to Libya and the people of Benghazi, had hopes for their eventually becoming a Middle East success story, and that he died as he lived, courageous and unswerving in his desire to help those who he loved. Also remember that he was so beloved by the people of Benghazi that a couple weeks after his death, outraged protestors rose up and drove the extremists thought to be responsible for his death out of the city. His death may have been a turning point in the Libyans' fight to reclaim their lives and their country from extremist influences.

Very well argued. Unfortunately because of her future political ambitions Hillarity will never accept responsibility in a meaningful way. The only part of the State Department job she was interested in was the size of the SoS's travel budget. Sadly it is a simple as THAT. The embassy is in Tripoli. The consulate is in Benghazi. A consulate is simply a remote-location office from which diplomatic personnel can hold meetings with locals, and according to reporter Ethan Chorin of the NY Times, he thinks Stevens may have simply opted to stay overnight at the office in anticipation of another round of meetings the next day.

Ethan Chorin knew Ambassador Stevens personally, was familiar with him and his work, and this article he wrote is on of the most powerful I've seen as regards this incident:

ON Wednesday morning, my colleagues and I were to meet in Benghazi with J. Christopher Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya, to discuss a plan for a new division of emergency medicine at Benghazi Medical Center, the largest and most modern hospital in eastern Libya. The meeting never took place. The night before, militants laid siege to the American Consulate in Benghazi, killing the ambassador and three other Americans. The ambassador was taken, without a pulse, to the hospital we hoped to upgrade.

The draft agreement we were working on was the kind of visionary effort to improve life in Libya that Ambassador Stevens liked — in this case, a collaboration between doctors in Boston and Benghazi, brokered by a nongovernmental organization that a Libyan-American and I had organized after the recent revolution. Our goal was a center that could also serve as a training facility for all of eastern Libya. It was the kind of public-private and Libyan-American partnership that Ambassador Stevens believed could help Libya move beyond decades of stagnation and despotism.

On Tuesday night, even as the men who would kill him were closing in, Ambassador Stevens told us by phone how happy he was that the project was nearing fruition. He told us it was important to show our government’s support for such initiatives, and we made plans to meet with the medical center’s director general, Dr. Fathi al-Jehani, at the hospital the next morning. Dr. Jehani himself had been a target of violence for his forward-thinking views.

About half an hour later, I called the ambassador’s security detail to discuss the visit, only to hear the words “we’ve got a problem here” — with an alarming expletive inserted. The line went dead. And we were left to listen helplessly as the sounds of distant violence carried across the city to our hotel room — a long rocket-propelled grenade volley, and machine-gun fire that continued for the better part of an hour.

Ambassador Stevens arrived after midnight at Benghazi Medical Center, where we were to have met. Its emergency room staff, which included Libyan expatriates who had returned from well-paid jobs abroad, worked for 45 minutes to try to resuscitate him. It was no use.

The tragedies of this situation simply compound one another. For a forthcoming book about the Libyan revolution, I have interviewed scores of current and former Western officials, many of whom were either pessimistic about or indifferent to Libya’s growing pains. In their eyes, Libya continues to be a sideshow of the broader Arab Spring.

Ambassador Stevens did not agree. I discussed Libya’s future with him last spring in a Washington cafe, as he awaited confirmation as ambassador. He had already been the deputy chief of mission in Libya, and he had been the United States envoy to Benghazi during the dangerous early days of the revolution. So he knew Libya, and he believed that it could become one of the first full success stories of the Arab Spring — that Islamic radicalism there could be nipped in the bud if Western governments acted decisively to put the country on a path to stability and social progress.

Now, his death may derail the very processes he championed.

Mr. Stevens understood that Libyans had suffered under Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, and that conflict and post-revolutionary instability were to be expected. He also understood that some, if not all, of the hatred that had pushed some of Libya’s youths to join radical factions in Afghanistan and Iraq had sprung from years of neglect and oppression. Now, he felt, new opportunities needed to be created to wean these people away from ideologies rooted in hate.

No doubt that was one reason he made a point, as ambassador, of continuing to visit Benghazi, the East’s largest city, despite the clear risks; there had been attacks on other high-level diplomats there in the previous months. It is a mystery at this point why the consulate compound was so lightly fortified, but I would not be surprised if Mr. Stevens had decided to stay overnight in Benghazi simply because his list of planned meetings with Libyans there was too long to be accomplished in one afternoon.

The morning after the attack on the consulate, my colleagues and I returned to the medical center, where we witnessed an outpouring of sadness and, as one physician put it, shame. The emergency room staff members who worked to save Mr. Stevens broke down in tears, as did the physician in charge. Some knew or had met Mr. Stevens; some had not. But all were aware that he had been a champion of Libya, and of Benghazi in particular, and that his death may have rolled back Benghazi’s stupendous revolutionary accomplishments by months — even if it does not set off a period of heightened instability in eastern Libya. Many Libyans outside the hospital also offered condolences and expressed profound regret for America’s loss.

In the West, we can now expect a strong temptation among governments and private enterprise to declare the Libyan experiment a failure, and to respond by disengaging, retreating or focusing only on the extirpation of radical elements. That would be a terrible mistake. The attack has already entered into the American presidential debate in a base fashion, with Mitt Romney’s first instinct being to criticize President Obama over the timing of his denunciation of the attack. But Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton got it right when she spoke of the Libyan people as allies in the fight against extremism.

The gravest mistake would be for the United States to write off Libya as an irredeemable terrorist haven, or for politicians in Washington to regret having intervened in support of Libya’s rebels. Libya is still far better off today than it was under Qaddafi. The grip of fear has been broken. Election posters festoon the country. Election schedules have been met. And there is a rich expression of individual opinions.

Nevertheless, the Libyan people need support to consolidate gains, and to continue a fight against largely foreign-financed radicals who wish to hijack the revolution in the name of intolerance. And the United States must help the Libyans do that. The loss of Ambassador Stevens will, I hope, goad the Libyan government into matching its discipline about election schedules with far bolder steps to crack down on extremists and disarm the country’s militias. And Libya should press the American government for even more support in that effort, even as it encourages American organizations to find common cause with their Libyan counterparts to improve the lives of Libya’s citizens.

This week the United States lost one of its most admirable public servants, and I can report that at least some Libyans are profoundly aware that the loss is theirs as well. As we arrived at the airport under armed escort, a member of the airport ground crew said: “Today I will go home, I will take off these clothes, and I will put on only black. As a Libyan, I am so sorry this has happened.”

Just for the record, I have been to many US embassies around the world...83 to be exact and over 100 US consulates. There is a huge difference in the security between a US embassy and a US consulate. Some US consulates have little or no security. They are simply an office in an office building or a converted private residence as in the case of Benghazi, Libya.

Hillary is stepping down. From what I've read and seen, the blame lies with the state dept who didn't pass along the diplomatic team's request for another extension of the SST. As Hillary is the head of the State Dept she should not be able to keep her job (which apparently she is not, as she will no longer be Secretary of state after January 1st)and President Obama has already expressed regret about the role his administration played in the tragedy. I would not hold him personally responsible for the 4 Americans' deaths as it looks as though he may never have known about the request for extra security and would not have been able to deny what he did not know about. I am quite positive that he personally regrets those deaths with every fiber of his being, because reportedly Stevens was his friend.

FOUR Americans died, including our ambassador, the personal representative of the "President", who was killed and raped and dragged thru the streets

You know, I'd like to know where people are getting that. He died of smoke inhalation according to the doctors at the hospital, and if there were signs of violence on the body, do you not think that his family would have been raising hell about it when his body came home for burial? There would have been something on the autopsy reports, the mortuary who prepared him for a funeral, probably whoever checks bodies as they are coming in the country would have noticed too. The fact that I have not seen any concrete evidence from any credible source, and his own family has not said anything of the sort, leads me to conclude the rumors must be incorrect.

Leaving aside the crude bathroom reference, Ethan Chorin is a writer on his own merit and what he writes may not be indicative of the general tenor of the newspaper as a whole. I found the article pasted to be very respectful of the Ambassador, giving a clearer picture as to what drove Stevens to make the decision that night to stay in Benghazi instead of returning to the embassy in Tripoli, and found myself in agreement with the writer's wish that this incident not destroy the fragile relations between Libya and America that Ambassador Stevens gave his life to build and maintain.

They're unhappy Mormoney couldn't score during the debate about Benghazi. Here is my problem with it...Consulates and Embassies usually have a Marine presence...But here the US hired some Libyan group called the March 13th group, or something like that, that never showed at the first sign of trouble....

So why the fu** did we do that?? Why pay a group of people in a country that doesn't really like us to run "security" for us??

Now you Liberals I don't want to hear about how Bush did this and Bush did that...It's wrong no matter what...And Amanda if you see the photos you don't bleed from smoke inhalation...But either way he was murdered...I set your house on fire while you are in it and you die of smoke inhalation I am guilty of murder...There's no getting around that fact no matter how you spin it....

@Amanda: " I would not hold him personally responsible for the 4 Americans' deaths as it looks as though he may never have known about the request for extra security and would not have been able to deny what he did not know about". What kind of conclusion is that you're jumping to (that he can't deny what he doesn't know)? This is pure conjecture on your part, and that's why we NEED a FULL investigation. military experts have said that people on the ground do not paint targets with lasers unless there is already an aircraft overhead ready to fire. So, the assumption is that a plane/drone was there and because of direct orders it did not attack. Those orders had to come from the WH. As regards Clinton, no it is not enough that she resigns. Her resignation alone is not a "consequence". She should be investigated to the fullest regardless of where it leads. You statement: "But it is done and over with, and the focus now should not be on 'who's to blame' but 'how can we keep this from happening again" is an excuse for a cover-up, which by the way you did not address in your retort.

@Pat in SoCal, you're a sad, pathetic and angry Marxist.

Most Embassies (except in a war zone) have anywhere from 7 to 15 Marines in the detachment, not a company of heavy armed assault troops. The Marine Guard is for security within the grounds and ceremonies. The security outside the grounds is handled by local forces.

It depends on the size of the Embassies.

Yes the problems that went wrong need to discovered and corrected. BUT let's keep politics out of it.

Ambssator Rice hasn't done anything wrong, I am still not convinced that the crude film wasn't the trigger for the event. It was in next Eygpt and on the same night.

Let the facts come out and even if they prove the President or his administration didn't do anything wrong. Faux and Idiots will claim it was a cover up.

Hell, they couldn't even get the election polls right...... let's investigate Faux for lying to the public.

Al my god...Really?? You still think the film was the reason?? So now that the President has backtracked from that and has said that it may well be an act of terrorism, are you now calling him a liar?? Which one is it?? If Rice was told to say that by the Administration then no she has done nothing wrong....But if she WASN'T told to say that then yes she did by putting herself on the news talk circuit spewing garbage...Why not find out with an investigation?

Per the original article I posted above:

Investigators are exploring whether anyone at the State Department told the Embassy specifically not to request another extension.

I never said we didn't need a full investigation. I was trying to get across that the focus of the investigation shouldn't be fingerpointing and laying blame; it should be 'what went wrong so we don't have this happen again?'

military experts have said that people on the ground do not paint targets with lasers unless there is already an aircraft overhead ready to fire. So, the assumption is that a plane/drone was there and because of direct orders it did not attack. Those orders had to come from the WH.

I've heard nothing about 'lasers', could you point me in the direction of a credible source who said there were people on the ground pointing lasers?

If there were, could the extremists have had laser-guidance on their weapons?

Could crowd members have been directing laser pointers into the air to confusse and keep air support from possible assistance? In my municipality there's been an epidemic of criminals who are running from cops pointing lasers up into police helicopters to keep the pilots from being able to see their target.

And just as I was making an assumption that the White House was never told about the request for SST extension, so you, too, now are making assumptions that there was a plane or drone overhead that didn't fire on explicit orders.

Supposing there were a drone, how do we know this wasn't a surveillance drone, not carrying weaponry with which to mount an offensive strike?

How do we know this was a US drone, not another country's?

How do we know the extremists might not have had an aircraft in the air providing support?

Who was responsible for letting President Obama know that one of our drones was overflying the scene?

There's been a lot of talk about President Obama having been on the way to the West Coast for a television show of some sort, and that he wasn't informed of the attack for a couple hours.

Her resignation alone is not a "consequence". She should be investigated to the fullest regardless of where it leads.

No, Mrs. Clinton should not be investigated to the fullest extent. The incident needs to be investigated to the fullest extent, from the Libyans' response to the assault, to the lack of funding for embassy security, to the person at the State Department who may have given orders that the diplomatic team not be given another SST, to Ambassador Stevens' decision to not return to the embassy in Tripoli after his day's meetings were over but to stay overnight in a poorly-guarded satellite consulate office.

You statement: "But it is done and over with, and the focus now should not be on 'who's to blame' but 'how can we keep this from happening again" is an excuse for a cover-up, which by the way you did not address in your retort.

I didn't address it because I thought it was clear--you cannot figure out how to keep an event from happening again unless there is a full investigation to reveal details to how it happened in the first place. Let me clarify my original statement, as I left a couple of words out that perhaps didn't make my meaning clear to you (though it seems that others did understand):

The focus of the investigation now should not be 'who is to blame' but 'how do we keep this from happening again'.

Per this statement, this is what I see as being needed:

A full investigation needs to be conducted.

The focus should be on what went wrong this time so safeties can be put in place to ensure it never happens again.

The Secretary of State should step down as it was apparently under her watch that the negligence took place.

Whoever it was at the State Dept who did not pass the diplomatic team's request for the SST's extension should be fired and penalized (if there is proven to be such a person.)

Departmental directives should be in place that would prohibit diplomatic staff from staying overnight in any place but a guarded, protected, fortified official embassy. There should not be overnights in consulate offices in volatile conflict areas.

Rob, have you ever been outside the USA? and if so... let me guess... a trip to Cancun or a fishing trip to Canada?

Look at how pissed off the Evangelicals got when it was mentioned that Jesus might of had a wife.

Or how pissed off people get over a college team rivalry.

You walk all over someone else's religion, just to piss them off.... and then cry "foul" if your actions lead to things you disagree with.

I don't trust the GOP to conduct a fair investigation. Issa and his fellow idiots already blew the cover on an on going CIA operation - just to make himself look important.

AL I lived in Europe for many years and travelled to numerous countries...What does that have to do with anything in Libya?? You didn't answer my question....Which is it?? Did they storm the Embassy because of a movie or,as the President now agrees with, that it most likely was a terrorist attack?? Yes of course you don't trust the GOP just as the right doesn't trust the Dems...How about a bi-partisan committee?? And now I'll wait for your "The GOP won't allow a bi-partisan committee"

And so Freedom of speech only pertains to things that other people are ok with?? Yes don't say anything that might make someone mad...

These people that murdered the 4 Americans most like had NO idea about the damn film, but yet "we" allow them to now have that as an out to murder American citizens...You are pathetic....

Rob - as to "freedom of speech" you can't yell "Fire" in a crowded movie theather and not be held accountable for the results.

As the film.. it has already been proven that protests and riots broke out in other countries and then the attack in Benghazi. Now whether the film was the cause of the attack or cover for the attack, but the question remains "If the film wasn't made, would there of been an attack?"

And Rob, when you call someone "pathetic" look in the mirror first.

But what is really "pathetic" is that the GOP doesn't care about what happened, only that they see it as a way to get back in power after getting "bitch-slapped" in the election.

Funny how the GOP never made a peep about when the White House tasked Colin Powell with going around the world presenting erroneous intelligence concerning WMDs in Iraq, which led directly to the country going to war under false pretenses, which directly resulted (not in reaction to deaths already occurred, but directly causative of deaths in the future) in THOUSANDS of needless American deaths.

Funny how Dems are defending Obama when he is supposedly given bad intelligence, but are more than willing to go after Bush when the same thing happens. However, we do have reports that Obama wasn't given erroneous intelligence, but instead chose to ignore what he was given. That is worse than believing what you are given and having it proven wrong.

Funny how you're willing to defend someone who is willing to cause American deaths because he want's to ignore good intelligence but are willing to go after someone who had been given bad intelligence.

Oh, by the way, do you realize that Clinton butchered the intelligence field before he left office and it took years to build it back up? But hey, since it did not happen within hours, it's not his fault, but the fault of Bush, who had to rebuild it.

Both events are outrageous. If either president was ever found to have for certain fore-knowledge of these events, then they should be arrested. I will accept that either or both of them had bad intelligence reports. I will not accept if either or both of them failed at their job as Commander-in-Chief.

Nor do they remember what happened to the Marine Baracks bombing in 1983 in Beirut. No one mentions how that happened under Reagans watch of course. Or of course 9/11 which happened under Bush/Cheyney. Also the USS Cole that happened under Clinton. The point is security lapses happen and no one can prevent them all. Yes, we need to get to the truth to prevent it from happening again, but to call a Watergate type investigation as if the President Himself broke into the opposition headquarters to steal election plans is dumb.

John McCain this type of stuff is EXACTLY why America didn't want you as President. You're an old coot who is living on past glory. Retire honorably already will ya?

What's worse? That you think Bush was President instead of Cheney, or that you think they got bad intelligence? These wars kicked started the privatization of our Armed Forces into high gear. The only thing required for the success of it, was to stay at war. What better way than to have two going at the same time.

Why did the Bush administration take away the responsibility of the feeding, clothing, maintaining, repairing, supplying, building and anything else that didn't involve being on the from lines from our Armed Forces? The wars costs skyrocketed because we were paying civilians to do the work.

People were opting to not re enlist just so they could get a job with a contractor and make 5 times as much doing the same damn thing.

Also, starting two wars isn't what I call sparing American lives. Bad intelligence? Hardly. Bush was all too happy to turn his back on us in Afghanistan the day he got his self proclaimed Holy War in Iraq. He left us high and dry and constantly took equipment and troops from us in the fight to get Bin Laden.

We could have been out of there in 2003 if Bush would have stayed focused. Now we have Iran on the verge of nuclear capabilities because he took out the only person bat crap crazy enough to keep them in their place. Not to mention, the whole Middle East fell even more into chaos.

You say bad intelligence and I say war profiteering.

EJC, you make a good analysis. Namely that terrible security breaches have cost American lives both at home and abroad under most Presidents. They should be investigated to find any security problems that may be fixed.

Just to add to your analysis, Sen McCain and Sen Lindsey have no desire to improve our security, but rather are only interested in publically beating their own breasts to avoid their failed attempt to defeat the Democrats.

It's stuff like this that crys out for single term limits on all elected offices so that re-election is never an option for any elected job-holder, and lobbyists have nobody to buy.

KEY2JOY your a broken record, lets clear up a couple of things in the year leading up to the 9/11 attack the cia was getting daily hundreds of reports on POSSIBLE attacks, it was the job of bushes staff to review and make suggestions thats why he has a cabinet, bush doesnt make decisions by himself and neither does obama, and since you got a real issue with pointing fingers go back and look at the vote for the war it was almost unaminous both dems and reps voted to declare war...your a very confused person to think the president makes a decision of that nature on his own. I can see the hate you spew regarding bush but he did do some great things for this country, but after 4 years what has obama contributed to america....almost doubled the deficit, lent billions to huge corporations to bail them out and how many of these acts have helped america , we still ahve foreclosures we still have unemployment, and we have one of the biggest illegal issues in the world with obama at the helm billions are spent to support an illegals mandate that does nothing for america, these are criminals but im sure you forget that when sreaming about 9-11, so key you ever come up with something vital lets hear it. have a great day

First off they knew the danger when they took the job, get over it, I lost friends to embassy jobs. No one blamed Reagan or looked into his dumb reugn of the country. Next look at Bush on and the attack on Marine base, no one looked into that, then Bush 2. So get over it, your guy lost, live with it or move out of the country, but that's right, other countries live within a socialized healthcare system, governments don't bully the people, because those countries realize they work for the people. Why is Bush, Cheney and Rumsfield not under a jail, talk about crimes against humanity, and you people bring up a special prison under Obama. Idiots, the lot of you

We don't need bigoted, racist, selfish, angry, do-nothings hanging around. Form your own country with your military dictatorship government. Then, good luck surviving without the government handouts you're so used to getting. Without the backwards redneck states sucking this economy dry, we will start running a surplus.

Also how could this instalation have been attacked twice prior to this and extra security was denied? If you did not know it was attacked twice prior to the last incident then Clinton should have known and is left holding the bag.

According to some of the articles I'd read, there had been a couple of incidents at the embassy in Tripoli that were handled quickly and efficiently by Libyan military forces with no loss of life.

The attack, when it came, did not take place at the embassy in Tripoli but a consulate (a satellite office) in Benghazi, where according to reporter Ethan Chorin, Stevens had traveled to hold some meetings with a hospital administrator. The meeting took longer than he expected, and Chorin thinks Stevens apparently decided to stay overnight at the consulate rather than travel back to Tripoli and then back out to Benghazi the next morning:

It doesn't matter that what they yammer makes no sense at all, they must make noise "against" Democrats in any way possible. Can't we find any Republicans who want to achieve something positive? John McCain is a decorated military man who has served this country all of his life. I do not have to agree with everything he says or does but I certainly respect him. His main thing is that as a nation we are being lied to about this business in Benghazi and if we are lied to about this, what else are we being lied to about? If Obama sent Ms. Rice out to lie to the media, then he is responsible regardless of what the liberal media is spewing. IF Bush had been involved in this, the media would have already crucified him instead of covering up for him. Truth is truth. Every president has done things that are not acceptable to someone. But as a nation we deserve the best and Obama is far from the best.

                                        Totally agree Linda and David,
If this was Bush there would be Protests in the streets and non-stop slamming by the Media, instead we have an Affair taking the focus (however is relivent in that security was at risk) And Obama has the nerve to act indignant and challenges anyone who questions to question anything or anyone in his circle,it's a big wet blanket ,people are dropping like flies from coveted positions in his Administration, and all seem to have been involved at some level in The Benghazi Middle East fiasco ,Security at every level has been involved, and we need and demand to know what the hell happened and why,and why after all this time and after the election Obama says come at me,well The American People have been asking,Senator Lindsey G,sent a letter to Obama Personaly to ask questions and he said he has been meet with a standard WH letter, saying we're waiting for the investigation and refered him to news sites to get the up to date info. . . Obama is either seriously incompetent and possibly criminal for not doing the right thing or he hired people who do not inform him,and even when he can't ignore the news channels,he still doesn't know what's going on,but the news can find out more in one day than Obama seems to find out for weeks,he could at least try to earn the trust of those of us that are not enamored with him,if he really wants to bring everyone togather he needs to walk the walk,he seems like he is hiding and then gets all puffed up about Rice?? Is he deflecting again or is it deeper and is he sticking up for her for other reasons.....?And the plot thickens....

He's trying to ramp it up Troy. Emboldened by his re-election he's openly attacking republicans first, then when he has more confidence, he'll work on terrorism and the economy. After he gets rid of all the competent Generals in the military of course.

                                            4. The question that should be asked is "Why weren't fast response teams based in Turkey or Egypt? Turkey is a NATO ally, and Egypt gets a lot of money from us. To have the only fast response based in the US is just stupid.

Why did the Repubs refuse to ok the request for additional money to increase security in Libya if it was so important to them, or did it only become important when they thought they found something they could blame on our President?

You sorry bunch of dribblers. Obama was re-elected because he gamed the Electoral College, not by a vote counting "landslide" the Dems like to quote.

A win by 2.5% is not a significant majority of the popular vote. It is not a mandate to do as you please, it is a sign that your country is severely divided. It is a signthat there are an awful lot of folks out here who are not in favor of your policies, did not like health care being Dem'd down their throats and are thoroughly pissed at the prospect of being "sold down the river"(remember the open mike comment to the Russian about Obama "have more latitude after my re-election").

We are damn proud of what our country stands for. We stand proud with our country and we sure as hell take offense at anyone who denigrates it. It has nothing to do with being a Dem, Repub or Indy...it has to do with being a red blooded American.

To try to blow up this event as a major "debacle" that should weaken and bring down a President, when they said NOTHING about the failures of Bush in regards to 9-11, is beyond despicable. If they want to find people who lack patriotism and pursue an un-American agenda they need only look in the mirror.

It's not a matter of focus - there are efforts already under way to find out what actually happened and what future steps should be taken. Please note that that has nothing to do with the witch hunt the Republicans are trying to get going.

Mike's point is that the Republicans showed no such deep concern with asking the same questions of Bush, even though it's clear that he ignored information that was being provided him, even though senior security advisers told him the information was of critical importance. Had he not, thousands, not four people, might have been saved. But he was more interested in pursuing extreme partisan politics at the time, so paid no attention.

So, bottom line, this isn't about McCain or Graham caring about anything but scoring political points.

R354689, SERIOUSLY your not in the government and i can see you really have no clue as to how politics works especially leading up to the 9-11 attack, unlike obama, bush depended more on his intelligence group and at the time there was a world wide concern that iraq had wmd, and for the record they did find barrels of chemicals that given time could be made into a weapon. the problem was there werent enough chemicals to validate a WMD. and for the record during the bush years the dems were going after bush also just like the reps are doing now but hers the big rub, no one had warning that a plane was going to be flown into the towers, CIA got literally hundreds of possible attacks prior to 9-11, and to this day we get reports all the time regarding possible terrorist activities. so even i dont think obama is responsible for benghazi just as bush was not responsible for the 9-11 attack Ijust wish you people would put as much passion into everyday living as you do posting here

RW, please pay attention -- earlier posts already made the point that pre 9-11 warnings were non-specific as to the target. The Libyan risk was so obvious the British closed up shop and went elsewhere. The security officers on site asked several times for more resources and were ignored. After the attack began the local staff had to directly disobey several "standdown" orders to provide assistance and their pleas for help were ignored. The President acknowledged within 24 hours of the attack that it was a coordinated strike yet he allowed his UN Ambassador to tell the you tube video story 5 times on national TV the Sunday following the attack. I'd say there are a few areas of legitimate enquiry here -- Chairwoman Diane Feinstein (D) has said that answers are needed. Hard not to agree with her.

However does he expect to get them to tone it down and meet halfway if he does this? If he has a beef, take it up with them quietly, collegially in a conference room not in a public venue.

I don't get the Republicans - if they wanted to cooperate with the President, why give a public speech lambasting our Ambassador and claiming that she is covering up for the President...

Because the president is the leader. He made the nomination in a public forum and since he chose to do that he had to expect a public response by people, senators, who, having heard this in a press release, are going to respond in the same venue. At one time a president would send the name of a designated nominee to Capitol Hill as a written request, not a press release.

He has not even nominated anyone you idiot. McCain and Gram have stated their position in a hypothetical stance to diss the president if he was to put Rice in the position of SOS. The President simply answered the question you moron.

Why the harsh language directed at Kevin, Charles?

Ambassador Rice has been talked about as the next SOS so the Senators comments regarding that possibility are more a pre-emptory strike than a hypothetical discussion. My guess is that she won't even be nominated -- she was being a "good soldier" and the White House royally screwed her. Who needs enemies when you have friends like that!! She's reached the end of her political usefulness, unless the President comes up with some post that does not require Senate confirmation. Even some Democrat Senators will probably be reluctant to vote for her confirmation.

FACT is, it was UNPRECEDENTED for the UN Ambassador to assume the role she did, of informing America on the Sunday morning news shows so many of us watch....EVERY ONE of them...

Why not the Secretary of State?

The UN Ambassador? REALLY? What does her position have to do with a terrorist attack on the United States?

She was sent out there to lie, plain and simple.

Plausible deniability. It was a setup from the git-go, and we WILL get to the bottom of it, despite all the wailing about "witch hunts" from the Democrats.

If one of them spoke the truth, and the WHOLE TRUTH, just once, we wouldn't need these "witch hunts"...

I actually want the Republicans to continue to spin their reality to the American public - the more they do so, the more tape we have to confront them with in 2014... and that means more losses in the House and Senate - filibuster-proof Senate and control of the House... I like the sound of that...

Democrat obstructionists? The GOP House passed two budgets and 30 jobs bills that were held up in the Senate. The Dems in 2009 - 2010 could not pass even one and that was when they had the WH and both chambers of Congress. Yep, the Dems are the obstructionists.

The GOP House will ensure that Obama's nonsense will be blocked.

The comparisons of this to Bush prior to 9/11 are beyond red herrings. There was no specific site mentioned in any "chatter" prior to 9/11. No targets mentioned. Me thinks that is clearly not the case here. At least from what I'm reading.... But, don't allow me to baffle any of you Democrats with any truth.

I propose that there be no investigations concerning the Benghazi tragedy. Why should there be, when some posters on this site "know" the truth already? They "know" what was said, they "know" everyone's motivations, etc. The reality is that they wouldn't believe anything that comes out of such an investigation if it didn't match their own preconceived beliefs. They're just hanging on to their I Hate Obama security blanket because they can't live without it. Pathetic, to use 4 terrible deaths as an excuse to maintain their hatred.

However, be that as it may, there have been no questions asked about Benghazi....especially troubling in light of the "spontaneous outburst over the video" lies that came from this administration.

In my opinion, the person need to be blamed, investigated and questioned is not Susan Rice but HILLARY CLINTON, our secretary of State and who is in-charge of our foreign missions around the globe but for some unknown reasons no one including any GOP leader is raising her name and for the last several weeks; she has kept herself aloof from his issue keeping silence. WHY?

Be glad it wasn't your dad, brother etc that asked for help and was denied thrice. Be glad it wasn't your president (oh it was) that lied about it being because of a you tube video....Sad, sad, America..look at history when Hitler was appalled by the people thinking he was doing something wrong....sounds eerily similar.

Americans died, Bush went on vacation. More Americans died under Bush right here in the good ol' USofA than at any time since the Civil War. You sure seem to be proud of that.

Here is a clue dimbulb....the American people are sick and tired of the attempts to delegitimize our elected president, both by popular and electoral vote, and by a wide enough margin to call it a mandate. Go back over to BS mountain and try promoting your retarded views there, you'll find a more receptive audience.

The reality is, their BASE are the uneducated inner city people, the prison population, the uber rich, hollywood and the social deviants. Their base is the most uneducated segment of society, and THEY TELL YOU IT'S TRUE which is why they fight voter ID, at least ostentatiously. They tell us their base is too stupid to get an ID which EVERYONE has in order to be able to function in modern society. No they prop up their base as straw men to champion voter fraud, horrible legislation, and take overs of the economy.

We will ALL feel the PAIN associated with these Marxist idiots policies, and I can't wait. it's the purge that will be the solution. It is already obvious (unfortunately) that Obama is refusing to move towards the center to compromise..

First, if lying kills America then America has been dead for a long long time. Second, the emails requesting more security were not ignored or denied, they were responded to by saying that there is a Civil War going on, it's extremely dangerous and we don't want more Americans on the ground, you should leave too. Third, you lose all credibility and show just how uneducated and misinformed you are when you compare ANYONE besides Stalin to Hitler, WW2 and the Holocaust took an estimated 60 MILLION lives, think about that.

Now I'd like to phrase a hypothetical. A police investigator named Ed shows up to a home with a dead body, he walks in the front door and sees a body laying face-down. At that very moment Ed is ambushed by a crowd of his peers and the media demanding "tell us what happened NOW, we need details NOW." So Ed says "well we are just starting an investigation, but from here it looks like a death by natural causes." He shuts the door on the crowd and begins the investigation, he inspects the house and then the body, when flipping over the body Ed notices there is a bullet wound in it's chest. He returns to the front door and says "we can now say that this appears to be a homicide." Half of the crowd thinks "fair enough, we'll let the investigation play out before we demand more details." The other half erupts with shouts "LIAR!!!!!! THATS NOT WHAT YOU TOLD US AT THE START OF THE INVESTIGATION!!!!" This half of the crowd has their own problems and see this as the perfect distraction, some of his peers have just suffered humiliating rejections when trying for promotions, some of the media had just been caught lying for months and ignoring statistics and facts. They decide they aren't going to let this one go, they will work hard to twist and distort the details until they create more and more outrage.

Why don't you wait until the investigation is completed, then criticize where criticism is due. One would think after Fox, the GOP, and their fans got hit so hard from all the election related lies and ignored facts that they, wouldn't be rushing to shoot themselves in the foot again.

P.S. I am a proud Republican and in the future I may be outraged over this event, but I am going to wait until the investigation is completed and all the facts are out there before I speak out because I don't want to nullify my view before I have any facts to work with like some conspiracy theorist would do. You're all an embarassment to our party.

@Partof - Since what you say is pretty much true, and you're intelligent enough not to fall for premature and false accusations solely intended to inflame the stupid, the racists and the religious fanatics, and since the republicans have made this their policy since 1980, and since Romney did it from day one of the primaries, inspiring Gingrich -- than whom there is no greater liar -- to accuse him of lying -- and since Romney is still at it today, just a few hours ago, trying to inflame his base with yet more lies...

why are you still a proud republican? Do you really believe there is some greater economic truth buried in this festering cesspool of lies? Do you really believe America will be better off when the top 10% control 95% of the country's income and assets?

Thank you president Obama, you're starting to get the hang of it.

Yes JimD I was reading what those clowns were saying, I'm not proud of them or their extreme views. I'll make a long story short, I voted for Obama, and I even voted for Al Gore in 2000. I was deployed, now I'm back, and the Republican party has been hijacked by loonies. No I don't think the Republican economic plan is better, and they never put forth a detailed one that worked. I was a proud Republican when Clinton was in office, you don't need to have a Republican President to participate in democracy and design policies together, and I voted for Al Gore because I liked how well the country was functioning at the time. I guess I'm slowly turning into a Democrat.

By all the different statements you make running down the Republican party it makes me think you are assuming I disagree with them or am unaware of them. I pretty much agree with you on everything because it's true, I already stated that people like this are an embarrassment to the GOP. By the way you are attacking somebody who is on your side, though in a different party, I'm venturing the guess that you are too young to have been alive the last time Republicans had a functioning helpful role in government, but there are some of us out here and you should embrace us instead because that is Democracy.
