A Ruger .380.
A flasher allegedly got more than he bargained for when he approached a woman at a lake in Washington state this week: a Ruger .380 pointing back at him.
“I put the magazine in my gun. I cocked it,” the woman told The Daily News online. “I said, ‘You need to leave or I’ll shoot you. I’m going to blow your brains out.’”
The gun reportedly had the intended effect.
“Oh, [expletive]!” the man declared, according to the paper, before running away.
The 35-year-old woman was at Lake Sacajawea in Longview, Wash., with her 6-year-old son and a dog Wednesday evening when the man approached, police confirmed to NBC News.
He allegedly sat down and began performing a sex act and said she should watch.
It was at that point that she pulled out her gun.
After the man ran away, she sent her dog, a Norwegian Buhund Hound, after him, police said. The dog cornered him, and when she called the dog back, the man disappeared into the darkness.
The alleged flasher is described as a “white male in his early 20s with short dark-blond hair and wearing a gray hoody and dark blue jeans,” the paper reported.
Detective Kyle Sahim said police are actively investigating the incident, including whether it is connected to another reported flashing in the area.
"Not a common event in Longview," Sahim said.

I bet her gun was bigger than his
And she pointed it at his penis...his small penis.
Just another instance of a Legal Gun owner using their weapon in self-defense. One of the more than 1.5 uses of a firearm in self-defense a year. Yet, liberals/Anit-gunners say guns aren't used in self-defense.
"Woman pulls gun on flasher: 'I'm going to blow your brains out'"
I am sure the News folks minced the little lady's words, what she actually said was...
"I'm going to blow your f*cking brains out you piece of @!$%#
Should have been 1.5 million uses.
This guy wasn't too bright - approaching someone that had a dog - nevermind the gun! That was bonus points!
Dawgfan:
Liberals have the bizarre idea that responsible people who are trained can use guns for hunting and defense.
Conservatives believe it is the god given right of any crazy or criminal person to buy any weapon they want via the gunshow loophole, and that when crazy or criminal people go on rampages, it is a lack of guns in crazy or criminal hands that is to blame.
So, if she was going to blow his brains out then, which head was she pointing the gun at?! ;-)
"Correct you are!"
Of course we can come up with a list of humorous comments like:
"I'll bet it affected him faster than a cold shower"
or
"Her compact weapon made his weapon compact"
and so on.
But as noted by a few above what this REALLY should show is how carrying a gun for protection might be needed at any time. I carry my gun in the grocery store, in the movie theater, in Home Depot, and when I am pumping gas. My hope is I NEVER need it but you just never know. And for that reason I carry it everywhere.
Here this woman hoped she would NEVER need it too. At a park? Is that necessary? In this case "yes". For a guy to be that blatant with a woman with a dog AND a six year old son you just don't know what his ulterior motive was. Was it to simply "shock" then run away? Possibly.
But what about the NEXT nut job (no pun intended). What if the NEXT guy intended to harm her? THAT is why carrying a gun is so important.
She had no business at a lake in the evening and should have called police who were less than twenty minutes away. I certainly hope she's fined for the leash-law violation.
Dereck, you wouldn't know what a conservative beleived in because you get all your information from lib stanktanks like huffpost, CNN, etc. I'll bet you don't even actually know any conservative gun owners. For your info, The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill or NAMI has done more to stop our legal system from protecting society from the dangerous elements of the mentally ill than any other group. You would know this if you actually did some real research. Of course, that involves a little more effort than regurgitating Brady Campaign lies.
@Derek-3400544:
I'm a conservative and find your statement to be as ridiculously stupid as most other liberal statements. Do you have any actual facts to back your verbal spew? If so, please produce them. If not, please go away until your brain completely forms.
By the way as proof of the opposite to your idiocy, I would never allow, under any circumstances somebody of your obvious mental incapacity to buy a gun at a gun show or gun shop.
cheetah,
It was "YOU" huh!? Heh heh...
Have a nice weekend....
MindieKnows, (below)
You have a point there. If he was brazen enough to do that in front of her child and dog, who knows what else he had in mind.
Derek-3400544
Except liberals believe that only police are trained enoughto carry.
When the truth is told police weapon training is a lot like Andy and Barney in Mayberry where Barney was only allowed to carry 1 bullet
I agree with you pro business. If this guy was that brazen to masterbate (i'm taking liberties assuming that is the sex act he was doing) in front of her while she had her dog and her 6 year old who knows if he wouldn't have tried to take it further and attacked her? Thank God she didn't have to use her weapon but Thank God she had it in case she did. She de-escalated the situation by having it. She's safe, her child is safe, and that is what matters.
"It is better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it."
Christian Slater, "True Romance"
In Texas the prick would have been history, and I doubt the little lady in this case would have been carrying a Ruger .380
It would have been more like an MP7A1 used by the SEALS or an AK duck-taped to the entire lower limb and an UZI for backup....
As for the fellows in Texas, it is classified what we carry around....
Dont mess with Texas!
cheetah you're an idiot!!
Would have been sad if she squeezed off a round or 2 and 1 of those rounds made it to someone innocent. A flasher should be handled by strictly none lethal means.
If anyone's self defense rounds make it to 1 of my children, the person responsible for the round will be in jail and I will quite possibly own everything they have. I don't care if you thought you had to pull a gun or not.
Own a gun? Stray round? You pay. Quite possibly with your freedom, most certainly with your pocketbook.
cheetah = Stupid Troll She has every right to be at a lake when she chooses. It is called freedom. QE, I hate your stupid lawyer scum commercials, get a real job and stop leaching off others with your lawsuits.
I will only give her a grade of A- as she should have blown his balls off right there. Hopefully this sicko gets caught before he does something to someone especially vulnerable kids.
Why can I never manage to be where these things happen? I'm always up for a free show from guys. And I dare say I'd've scared the guy a lot worse than that gun and dog did. lol
When I got my carry conceal I had to get fingerprinted at a local police station. Quite honestly I was not sure how they would react. Would they approve or would they be frustrated that they had to allow another "nut" to carry a gun in public.
When I got there and told them why I was there (and had my completed paperwork) they brought me back to the electronic fingerprint machine. We started making small talk and the officer asked me what my primary carry was going to be and I told him my .357 revolver. He made a positive comment about "good gun" and then said "don't forget - if you have to shoot remember two shots center mass" (meaning you NEVER try to shoot a leg or gun out a person's hand. If you feel like your life is in danger two shots in the largest mass which is the chest. And always TWO shots minimum).
But then he made a comment I was stunned, but glad, to hear. He said "I am glad you take your right to carry seriously. The hardest part of my job is in virtually all cases all I can do is help with the cleanup and tell the victims we will try to find who did this and many times unable to do so. I wish more people would carry and then the majority of my calls would be cleanup of the perpetrators and not the victims".
So all these people who claim the police DON'T want citizens to carry is nonsense. Are there some police that DON'T want citizens to carry? I am sure there are. But throughout the years I have met many police officers at events, friends of friends, etc. and I have not met ONE officer yet that did not support AND want the citizens to carry a gun.
And remember the old saying "When seconds count the police are only minutes away".
cheeta -
Fined for leash laws?
The dog obviously didn't attack when the man first appeared. She sent the dog after him when he ran away. He cornered the man and she was able to call him back.... the dog didn't maul the man.
Conclusion: The dog was better well trained than the man, and THE MAN should have been the one on a leash.
i am so glad this was a 'short' story
L.J. That would truly be a story for the books. Good for this woman, she should have left her dog there to keep the sicko corned until the cops got there.
@QE137, your lawsuit wouldn't hold up in court. Under many of the nations self-defense laws a person who uses a firearm in self-defense is free from having civil suits against them. On a side note, usually a person that carries a concealed weapon has a very good understanding of what is beyond their intended target.
QE137 makes a valid point that if she had shot this guy she would be in a whole lot of trouble. Pulling it was legal because of the uncertainty as to what he would do next but she cannot shoot unless she feels her life is in immediate danger. And since he had very little in his hand that could have harmed her she was only legally able to warn and if/when he ran away she was no longer in danger. THEN it becomes a police matter.
But she was legal to pull her weapon because she didn't KNOW if he had a hidden weapon (or should I technically say ANOTHER hidden weapon:). If he had made a sudden move reaching into his coat then she can shoot. If he pulled a knife or other weapon (besides his USELESS weapon at this point currently in his hand) then she can shoot. But at the time of the guy's self inflicting beating of himself her life was not in immediate danger.
QE137,
I'll take my chances and if you're ever in her shoes, good luck throwing that cell phone at him. Non-NRA huh? Pffft!...
Have a nice day...
On another note, the dog had the guy cornered!
I may be over thinking this, but I hope cheetah was being humorous.
Creek Dog: Maybe this dog could have got himself a new chew toy.
More guns...less crime. 'nuff said.
Not so in my jurisdiction. If you shot and your round makes it to a child, your life is done. You will be in jail, or you will be sued into oblivion.
There is no such thing as a 100% assured targeting. You can know everything there is to know about your weapon, you can be darn near a perfect shot, but once the round leaves the gun all bets are off. Also, there is no way to see people through walls, or to see people who where not there when you took your shot and missed.
I understand self defense, thats why I care a small arsenal of highly effective none lethal. a gun is LAST resort and should not be pulled for intimation alone.
People have choices in highly effective self defense and that is known to my local police and government. That is why there is stiff penalties for people who kill an innocent even in self defense.
You have the right to carry. You do not have the right to take an innocent life for ANY reason. If you chose to do so in my area, you pay.
You are only immune from charges from the perp and his family. I suggest you consult with an attorney if you think you are immune from charges caused by collateral damage you are mistaken. You can't shoot 10 ppl in a mall trying to get a person who robbed a store and expect to walk.
USA1967: Right on. I carry everywhere and even when lounging at night watching tv I carry a small .25 in my pocket. That's right - watching tv I am armed. I figure my 6-shot .25 would give me enough distraction until I can grab the .357 on the counter.
For all the liberals who say we should ban guns just ask yourself how that doctor in Connecticut (google William Petit) feels who was beaten near death then his wife and two daughters raped then burned alive with gasoline. Ask HIM if he wishes now he had a pistol on him at the time of the home invasion.
Then do a google search for the names Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom (boyfriend and girlfriend) who were carjacked then both raped so brutally you can't read the story without a tear forming in the corner of your eye then (mercifully) murdered after the incredible torture they went through. Ask the parents of THESE two young adults if they wish both Channon and Christoper were carrying a gun at the time.
These types of stories are endless and those who say we should NOT be allowed to own a gun are at the mercy of these types of sick individuals. Sorry, I believe (and so did our founding fathers) that every citizen has the right to carry a gun for protection. I will NOT be carjacked. There WILL be a body at the carjack location. My hope is it will be my perpetrator but I would rather die there in the street than to go through what ANY of the victims above had to go through.
Then ask the bo
QE137, What area do you live in that would punish someone for protecting themselves? I agree, my 1911 that I carry every day is a last resort. This lady did not pull for intimidation, she had a valid reason to pull in self-defense. I have used my firearm in self-defense during an attempted carjacking. That guy now has 15 years to think over what he did, and why he shouldn't try to use a brick to carjack someone.
I would officially classify this as an action NOT RECOMMENDED, similar to trying to apprehend robbery suspects on your own volition. You can do it, the authorities appreciate it when it's done and nothing goes wrong, but this is extremely risky and this woman was very lucky things worked out as they did.
Now, don't get me wrong, the situation could have easily deteriorated to the point where drawing a weapon was entirely warranted as a last resort. However, as described in the story here, it hadn't gotten that far yet.
The most appropriate thing to have done would have been to just keep walking without overtly paying attention to the man but covertly watching him as closely as possible as well as the surrounding area.
Presenting a weapon prematurely can very well needlessly escalate a situation to a point where it has to be used as a piece of survival equipment. That's supposed to be avoided as much as possible, and if the authorities and the court believes that a shooting or a brandishing of a weapon most likely could have been avoided had not the person claiming to have been defending themselves acted in such a way as to exacerbate things, that individual could find themselves in trouble. In self defense, the law is presuming that you were mostly to completely innocent and were merely minding your own business when you were attacked by a criminal in some manner. If it can be determined that a person in any way provoked an attack or was participating in any type of bilateral conflict, argument, or fight, self defense may no longer apply.
The most immediate problem the woman could have faced should this have gone south would be that the local constabulary may not have had such a good sense of humor about it. Some places are like that! She is blessed in that, at their sole discretion, they chose not to charge her with brandishing or possibly even reckless use of a firearm or assault of some type. This would be even more likely if the man showed up somewhere to file a complaint, particularly if he was fully dressed at the time he met with a police officer and was able to accurately describe the woman, her gun, and the dog. It would be her word against his, but he may have just won the all-important 'race to the phone' (or to the police station itself, depending). If you really need to draw a gun, it's because you have just been attacked in some manner - the crime of assault or possibly attempted abduction, rape, or murder has been committed. YOU need to be the one to notify the police immediately and file a criminal complaint against the person who you drew your weapon in response to, even if you have just shot them. Even if you've scared them away, make sure you contact the authorities to tell them your side of the story before your assailant can.
If, under stress, she had discharged her firearm or her dog actually attacked the man, not only would there likely be criminal charges, but he could probably successfully sue her, too, barring solid testimony from reliable eye witnesses. I don't recall any being mentioned in the story. A post shooting investigation would easily determine the man was seated on a bench and as he was apparently unarmed, it is highly unlikely a firearm or similar weapon would be recovered during a search of the scene. That does not bode well for a claim of self defense! His attorneys could easily claim that he had just been sitting there, um, 'doing his own thing' when she came along and shot him. Depending on other circumstances, a jury might just believe that. If he would have been on the trail itself and close to where she may have fired her gun from (as indicated by position of spent shell casings), had it come down to a shooting, then the law would definitely be on her side.
See just how tricky these things can get?
Always try to avoid trouble whenever you can. Trouble seldom seems to end well for anyone, this would be one of the times it worked out satisfactorily for everyone. No one got hurt, no one got arrested, and one pervert may have just been reformed for life after having the living daylights scared out of him by a woman with a gun and her dog.
Just don't try to be this woman and her dog. You may very well not be so fortunate!
Jack76, I know you are not immune if you shoot 10 ppl while trying to hit the real target. I would hope anyone that carries a weapon wouldn't fire in that type of situation because you don't have a clear line of sight. An instance the I would refer to is if a missed shot goes into a house and hits an innocent person. I don't think a lawsuit would hold up under that circumstance.
Dawgfan-4710266:
Nobody said anything about prosecution if used for self defense and the only damage is to the perp; but you are still responsible for making sure you have a clear background before discharging the weapon. That is what the lawsuit statement is about. If you cause collateral damage you will be held accountable. Like I stated before, you can't run through a mall and shoot 10 ppl while trying to stop a robber. You hit an innocent then you are no better than the perp.
-----------------------------------------------
You do not get punished for the act of self defense in my area. You get punished if the act of your self defense harms or kills an innocent bystander, especially if it is a child. You are encouraged to defend yourself by what ever means you think are necessary but it is made vary clear that if you kill an innocent person in the commission of self defense, you will be accountable for it.
Heck, in my town, there are strict laws against any discharge of a firearm for ANY reason. If you have to discharge in self defense, they will investigate and possibly give you a dispensation for doing so.
Why is the law so tuff? because many people cary here and the quarters are close in many areas of town. The last thing anyone wants is for people shooting for any reason in a confined space.
So, again, you are not punished for self defense, you are punished when the action you take kills an innocent.
QE137- Most of our states, I believe 48, now allow trained individuals without mental or criminal history to carry. I carry AT ALL TIMES. There is NO rash of stray round incidents anywhere, and the crime rate is markedly DOWN. You create a straw man argument. In this, as in 99%+ of cases where a gun is used to end a crime, or protect a life, it isn't fired. I sincerely hope you never meet a crazed doped out thug, intent on ending your life, but if you did, your pepper spray won't do a damn thing. I suspect your litiguous natural instinct is why Shakespeare penned, "first, we kill all the lawyers".
i knew a flasher...he was just that...not a rapist...he'd do it in front of kids and women...i ask him why he did it...said he thought he done it cause it shocked the people he flashed...he even said it was a sick thing to do...out side of that he was pretty much normal...well he did use a car wash vacum in a obscene manner...

Fact Sheet: Guns Save Lives
A. Guns save more lives than they take; prevent more injuries than they inflict
* Guns used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year -- or about 6,850 times a day.1 This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.2
* Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.3
* As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.4
* Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of "Guns in America" -- a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.5
* Armed citizens kill more crooks than do the police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year (1,527 to 606).6 And readers of Newsweek learned that "only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The 'error rate' for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high."7
* Handguns are the weapon of choice for self-defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year.8 Many of these self-defense handguns could be labeled as "Saturday Night Specials."
B. Concealed carry laws help reduce crime
* Nationwide: one-half million self-defense uses. Every year, as many as one-half million citizens defend themselves with a firearm away from home.9
* Concealed carry laws are dropping crime rates across the country. A comprehensive national study determined in 1996 that violent crime fell after states made it legal to carry concealed firearms. The results of the study showed:
* States which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rate by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%;10 and
If those states not having concealed carry laws had adopted such laws in 1992, then approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and over 11,000 robberies would have been avoided yearly.11
* Vermont: one of the safest five states in the country. In Vermont, citizens can carry a firearm without getting permission... without paying a fee... or without going through any kind of government-imposed waiting period. And yet for ten years in a row, Vermont has remained one of the top-five, safest states in the union -- having three times received the "Safest State Award."12
* Florida: concealed carry helps slash the murder rates in the state. In the fifteen years following the passage of Florida's concealed carry law in 1987, over 800,000 permits to carry firearms were issued to people in the state.13 FBI reports show that the homicide rate in Florida, which in 1987 was much higher than the national average, fell 52% during that 15-year period -- thus putting the Florida rate below the national average. 14
* Do firearms carry laws result in chaos? No. Consider the case of Florida. A citizen in the Sunshine State is far more likely to be attacked by an alligator than to be assaulted by a concealed carry holder.
1. During the first fifteen years that the Florida law was in effect, alligator attacks outpaced the number of crimes committed by carry holders by a 229 to 155 margin.
2. And even the 155 "crimes" committed by concealed carry permit holders are somewhat misleading as most of these infractions resulted from Floridians who accidentally carried their firearms into restricted areas, such as an airport.15
C. Criminals avoid armed citizens
* Kennesaw, GA. In 1982, this suburb of Atlanta passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in the house. The residential burglary rate subsequently dropped 89% in Kennesaw, compared to the modest 10.4% drop in Georgia as a whole.16
* Ten years later (1991), the residential burglary rate in Kennesaw was still 72% lower than it had been in 1981, before the law was passed.17
* Nationwide. Statistical comparisons with other countries show that burglars in the United States are far less apt to enter an occupied home than their foreign counterparts who live in countries where fewer civilians own firearms. Consider the following rates showing how often a homeowner is present when a burglar strikes:
* Homeowner occupancy rate in the gun control countries of Great Britain, Canada and Netherlands: 45% (average of the three countries); and,
* Homeowner occupancy rate in the United States: 12.7%.18
Rapes averted when women carry or use firearms for protection
* Orlando, FL. In 1966-67, the media highly publicized a safety course which taught Orlando women how to use guns. The result: Orlando's rape rate dropped 88% in 1967, whereas the rape rate remained constant in the rest of Florida and the nation.19
* Nationwide. In 1979, the Carter Justice Department found that of more than 32,000 attempted rapes, 32% were actually committed. But when a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3% of the attempted rapes were actually successful.20
Justice Department study:
* 3/5 of felons polled agreed that "a criminal is not going to mess around with a victim he knows is armed with a gun."21
* 74% of felons polled agreed that "one reason burglars avoid houses when people are at home is that they fear being shot during the crime."22
* 57% of felons polled agreed that "criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running into the police."23
I guess it's true that you never know when you'll find yourself unexpectedly threatened by someone and a gun will be useful for self-defense. OTOH, what if that someone threatening you is wearing a bulletproof vest? I guess that's possible too. So maybe guns aren't enough. Maybe the answer is that we should all be allowed to carry bazookas? Clearly, making it easier for all of us to kill each other is the best route to a safe society. It's probably just a coincidence that the US has the highest rate of gun ownership and the highest rate of gun homicides.
cheetah,
"She had no business at a lake in the evening and should have called police who were less than twenty minutes away. I certainly hope she's fined for the leash-law violation"
What a idiotic comment. I hope you don't actually think that way. The woman had every right draw on the "whack" job. Where in the article does it say she wasn't allowed to be at the lake? She was probably just walking her dog just like millions of people do. I bet she just let go of the leash and never took the time to unhook it from the dog's collar anyway.
QE,
No mention of other children or anyone else in harm's way. Your point is moot here.
I'm glad she didn't have to waste this pervert in front of her son.
Brian: Just out of curiosity was your comment intended to make a logical point or a rational contribution to the discussion?
Did I say anything about pepper spray? lol. There are far more effective things for self defense then that. I do not make a distinction about how a gun is used once it is pulled. I have no problems at all with people who feel they need to pull a gun. I also have no problems holding those people accountable if something goes wrong.
Sadly, vary few gun owners seem to look at what non lethal methods are out there. That is evident by the number of people the assume that pepper spray is all that constitutes none lethal.
You hope I never come up against a crazed person eh? I could tell you stories.. lol. In any event, there where better less potentially lethal ways to handle this flasher, but, again what she did is what she did and no one got hurt. It is not always that way when someone pulls a gun.
There is nothing wrong with holding gun carriers accountable for stray rounds that CAN happen, and so it shall be when you discharge your firearm and your good guy bullet strikes a kid on the street.
I too have a concealed carry license and carry a ruger like this lady does... but mine is a Ruger LCR, a .38 special relvolver with 115 grain hollowpoints.
You'd be surprised how many more women are learning to protect themselves these days! I encourage all of you to take advantage of your constitutional rights to own guns and take that ownership responsibly. There are plenty of gun ranges and classes to take in most cities that will help you become proficient and safe as a gun owner!
The point is not moot when your first instinct is to whip a gun on a flasher and blow him away. You pull a gun as a matter of course, you are placing everyone in the area at risk. There are plenty of people who do NOT think about this before they go to get their gun. If you can assure me that a person pulling a gun in self defense will not result in the murder of an innocent, then it is mute on all levels.
The fact it did not turn out that way in this story is great, but it was not imposable.
Brian,
Head shot. It's also pretty tough to conceal a bazooka. Good first sentence though.
Don't make assumptions about democrats and guns. While I'm a registered indie, since 1992, I lean heavily left (since 2003 - you do the math). And I believe 100% in the second amendment. Especially since recent comments that imply that women have less rights than rapists b/c they should be forced a pregnancy-via-rape to term, women ALL should be armed at all times, whether walking by themselves or on a date. Better to shoot to kill than have the GOP tell you you need to submit your body to the will of a rapist to be a father.
1.5 uses. Yep, that's about it. How many innocent people were killed for no reason other than someone with a gun is a bully? I'll bet more than 1.5.
She should have blown his head off, both of them.
As a general rule, anyone in civilized society who carries a gun is 100% responsible for any rounds they discharge and the damage they may do when they hit something, or someone, they shouldn't have.
This is true no matter whether you're a citizen, a police officer, a soldier during peacetime, or whatever. About the only thing that gets you off the hook is being a combatant in a war zone. Then most of the rules no longer apply. But outside of that, you're responsible for your bullets.
If you're a cop and you fire your weapon under questionable circumstances, unless you're the only officer in your little podunk town or your your chief is also a blood relative and/or good drinking buddy, odds are excellent you're going to be sweating - a lot - sometime soon as you're explaining to your chain of command exactly why you did what you did and hoping that they'll concur with your judgement. You might not have to pay for damages yourself if they are declared to be 'reasonable' - say, as in you were being shot at during a running gun battle and not all of your return fire contributed directly to neutralizing the offender - but the municipality you work for or their insurance carrier will be, and in turn the taxpayers of the community will be having to cough up for it.
If you're not a law enforcement officer, generally you're on your own when it comes to liability for errors and damages. That's really not a place you ever want to end up if you can help it.
@sam Adams, if you look two posts later I saw my mistake. On average a firearm is used 1.5million to 2 million times a year in self-defense. As for how many innocent people were killed for not reason other than someone with a gun is a bully? Look at the annual murder count from firearms. in 2010 is was 8995 murders with a firearm. That number came from the FBI uniform code. Also, worth noting is that "assault type rifles" account for less than 100 of the murders. More people are killed by hands, feet, or fist than any assault type rifle.
@QE137......we all hope you are next victim....nothing like a dose of reality to wake you up from your Bible-induced coma.
QE,
"There are plenty of people who do NOT think about this before they go to get their gun."
That goes without saying. Happens all of the time.
This woman clearly thought about the situation and did not shoot. Your comment regarding her shooting and missing, only to hit a child, has nothing to do with THIS article because she did not shoot and miss. Point is moot.
Liberals as a group hate the second amendment and would outlaw guns for everyone. Conservatives support the 2nd amendment and respect the right for everyone to decide on their own whether or not to own firearms!
Liberals believe they know what's best for others and want big government to enforce that will on us. And that is just another reason I'm a conservative and proud of it!
What can't people see the humor in Cheeta's post... No way is he actually for what he wrote... He's mimicking what a liber person would say.... hey, the cops are only 20 minutes away!!! Get it???? When cops are only 20 minutes away, that's pretty much useless.... (when seconds count, cops are only minutes away)... Also, we should have freedom to walk in parks anytime...
Catch up readers!!
That is one empowered woman. The idiot needed the dog to get a hold of his sausage.
Good for this lady and good job to the dog. The man approached her and stated his intentions and started the act. Who knows where it could've gone but before it took that possible turn she pulled her gun and made sure it didn't go that way. This guy is sicko and I hope they catch him. She felt threatened and was within her rights of self defense. Only way this would've been bad would've been if the lady shot him, then she would have a tough legal battle on her hands since he didn't physical go after her but she stayed in control and warned the man who ran off. IMO she did what she was supposed to. Only thing was maybe shouldn't of sent the dog on him unless she was thinking the dog could track him down and help the police catch him but either way I think this worked out for the best, except they didn't catch the perv. Shooting is always last resort and the gun alone did the trick. Again good job to this lady.
It is time
Qe137 doesn't understand the along with gun ownership comes responsibility. I have a license to carry a gun and went through a full day of class and tests on the range to get that license. I practice at local ranges at least once a month and have also taken self defense classes. No, I'm not paranoid, just practical. And I've made a lot of friends who share my beliefs.
The woman in this article has done the same.... she knew that showing the gun would solve the situation and never intended on 'blowing anyone away' as you said, unless her life or the life of her son was in danger!
Point would only be mute if she had not pulled the gun. Once out,any number of things can happen that where unforeseen. The vary act of pointing a loaded weapon in any public setting is a potential risk to the public and MUST be seen as such.
there are no accidental discharges where your from? No nerve induced trigger pulling? No other form of warding off a flasher? You get the idea. It would be moot if she kept it holstered. The minute she pulled it, she placed lives in direct danger.

@QE137......we all hope you are next victim....nothing like a dose of reality to wake you up from your Bible-induced coma.
-----------------------------------------------------
I don't read the bible much. You hope I am a victim? For saying that gun owners should be held accountable for what happens when the weapon discharges? For saying that if, in self defense, your bullet hits my kid your going to jail? For saying that as soon as that gun came out that there was a risk to the public?
I might be a victim of a crime one day, but with what I carry, i am just as likely to successfully defend myself as someone with a gun. On average, my weapons have almost 0 chance of killing or even hurting an innocent child ( or adult ) on the street.
This woman did what she did and it worked out. She had other options though.
I never worry about a criminal with a gun, I am trained to handle that situation. I worry about people "legal" gun owners who fire a gun and place others at risk. This woman took a huge chance by pulling a gun on a flasher and threatening him, when, simply warning the perv would likely have done the trick. Heck, if she wanted to she the guy her hand was on her weapon and told him to leave, that would have been great. Pulling it out in this situation and threading blowing his head off suggests someone who is not thinking clearly.
In my case, I am far more likely to be a victim of a legitimate gun owner then criminals with guns.
If holding you accountable for what you do with a weapon is wrong, then I am wrong.
I'm so attracted to this woman right now, not only did she show exemplary gun safety by having the magazine out of her piece, but she showed good handling skills in loading it up so fast and getting a bead on the target, and on top of that she has a dog that is trained to pursue and corner hostiles on command. Who is this woman, ex-Mossad?
Not me! I would blow his balls off. End of that story.

She did not show the gun, she pulled it.
You had ONE whole day of gun training and you target practice every now and then? OMG, I feel so much safer.. I do understand. I was trained in the military far longer then 1 day on the use of all types of weapons. They have their uses, but when civilians that think nothing of pulling weapons because they think thats all there is to self defense, I know they are not paying attention.
My original post contained this..
You want to use a gun for protection? That's fine, but if you do happen to have a stray round, and you kill my kid. I am going to own you.
The idea that gun toting civilians should be held accountable for what happens when they pull a weapon is what started the hate speech against me. What? accountability in pulling a weapon is not part of your "John Wayne" attitude? That is fine with me, but do not be surprised when you pull your gun and things go south on you and you are the one sitting on a bench explaining why your stray round hit my kid.
The scariest thing in the world is ho many people think that it is acceptable to use a gun in simple self defense situations that do not call for it.
What a smart woman! Take notice, all you gun control fanatics. Guns protect people.
Cheetah, got your sarcasm loud and clear. Don't think the others did, though....
As for the story itself, I wonder why she pulled the dog back after the perp was cornered? Should have kept that nutjob cornered while the police were on their way. Then again, her son could have been quite upset and she needed to tend to him...
all you gun toters realize that her gun did very little if anything.
she could have threatened to call cops and he probably would have ran off too.
or should could have just said "gross, you creep" and kept walking past him and again, same outcome. NOTHING.
but instead, she flashes her gun (like he wanted to flash his willy) and he flee's (i mean who wants to get shot?)...but then sends her dog after him? only to find him cornered, and let him go again?
makes it easier to tell this amazing story when you dont need to produce an actual criminal...dont you think? the value of having that gun would have been way more apparent had she kept him until police arrived and we got ONE PERVERT off the streets.
instead, she lets him go to committ the same perveted acts again.
you're all fooling yourself if you think her gun and letting him go will cause him to "think twice" about doing that again. he's sick, the only thing he'll think is "hey, I got away with it didnt I?"
kudos gun nuts...you've accomplished nothing, so stop bragging about this one. it's not a feather in anyones cap.
Qe137, you completely distorted Robin's comment to suit your needs..... it is peoplel like YOU who scare the heck out of me....!!! Robin has shown that she's a responsible gun owner, you on the other hand have a liberal agenda with no basis of fact! I feel sorry for you in a way... just stay out of my way!
I can not speak to her habits with a gun. Nor can you with the information that she gave. I can say that her ONE day of training and occasional target practice inspires 0 confidence in me.
I have no agenda other then to make people aware of the crap they face when they treat guns in an unacceptable manor. There seems to be a "yahoo" guns are the answer to every self defense situation attitude here. Keeping people grounded ( some people anyway ) by reminding them that they face consequences if their choice of self defense causes harm to innocents, is not an overly bad idea.
I have never said gun carriers should be stripped of their guns.. I have eluded to the fact that if you pull the gun and it was not necessary, you face problems when it goes wrong. I have a feeling that the over reaction by the woman in the story is not isolated in the mindset of many gun carriers.
QE137,
Seems you painted yourself into a corner. Can I mail you a pet rock for protection?
Low maintenance, don't have to feed or clean up after it. It's also extremely quiet and will not bother the neighbors. In fact, it gets along with "everyone!" Let me know. ;-)
Have a nice day...
@Jessica, that dirtbag was going to run the minute he saw she was defending herself and her child. By your thin reasoning, she should have shot him. The only way to keep perverts off the streets is to kill them; the courts certainly aren't going to do more than slap wrists. You want your argument to valid both ways. Sorry, logic doesn't work that way.
News flash, Qe, you haven't the least clue what that dirtbag intended. 'Simple self defense'? There is no such thing.
Furio, questions re: the 2d Amendment and gun ownership are not partisan. I have voted or President Obama twice. By the skewed reasoning of trolls, that makes me a 'liberal'. They can't extend their though process to 'independent' because they cannot function as independents. They must have the security of partisan affiliation and must be told what to think/do by buffoons like Limbaugh and Hannity. They can't get their minds around the concept that I also believe in being armed for self-defense.
@QE137, This lady in no way shape or form overreacted. She was in an isolated area, with a 6 year old, and a man approaches and starts jerking off and says watch. He could easily escalated that to rape. She prevented a physical crime against herself. An overreaction would have been putting a bullet in his back.
Wrong. There are plenty of liberals that own guns and believe in the 2nd amendment.
It's only too bad conservatives' love for decision making doesn't extend to a woman's right to decide what to do with her own body. Had this creep raped this woman and impregnated her, YOUR side would be implying that his right as a rapist to become a father trumps HER rights by denying her emergency contraception or an abortion.
Again, I refer you to my comment about a woman's rights being trumped. It's you conservatives that think you know what's best for everybody - and you want big, huge government to enforce its will on us - especially on women. Oh, and gays, too. You want big daddy gov't to tell people who they can marry or fall in love with, too.
You should be proud to protect women's rights as vehemently as you rightly protect the second amendment.
no no no she should not have a gun, guns are evil, guns kill people, she should go to jail. all she need it to do is say peacefully, please don't do that thanks. and the guy would say o.k. I wont flash no more and I won't rape you. peace.
" being sarcastic "
Guns Save Lives.
@bonos,
As a conservative republican gun owner, and lover of women the commonly stated thing about wanting to keep women from doing certain things was complete political BS. Not one Republican said a woman can't have contraception or an abortion. We simply want women to pay for it and not paid by the taxpayers or FORCE religious institutions to pay for it when it is against their constitutional right of freedom of religion. Yes, there are some people out there that say no abortions, but they are very few in number. There is no reason for a woman to get pregnant after a rape. They should immediately upon reporting to the police be given contraception that would kill any possibility of an egg being fertilized.

-------------------------------------------
She PULLED the weapon. It was loaded and cocked. The perv as described was unarmed. This WAS an over reaction.
She could have kept the gun holstered with her hand on the weapon and made sure he saw that she was ready to defend. This would have tested his resolve for escalation while preparing her for defense and protecting the general public from an unnecessary discharge.
She DID NOT use appropriate means of warning a flasher. Please, if you carry a gun, learn what is acceptable use of it and when to pull it. I really do not want to be cleaning up the blood of an innocent kid on the street because you people think pulling guns is appropriate to every thing you perceive as a threat.
Kudos to this woman! The only thing I would've done differently, had I been in her shoes, would've been to tell the guy to sit or kneel down with his hands in the air until the police arrived... but hey, who am I to knock what she did. She did great nonetheless! Hope they catch the sick bastard.
Is there a limit to how many times you will wish me a nice day? Since you have though, yes, its been a nice day indeed, so thank you vary much!
@QE137
Yes, I carry a gun every day. Either one of my 1911's, XD-40's, the judge, or just a simple 6 round .38 revolver. I shoot nearly every day, and will easily go thru 2,000 rounds a week as a hobby. I know when to pull and when to only have my hand on it just incase. I have pulled my weapon once in the nearly 12 years I have been carrying, and that was an attempted carjacking where the perp tried to smash my head with a brick. Thankfully I saw his reflection in the window as he was approaching with the brick over his head ready to strike. He's now spending 15 years in the state pen because of priors. You keep mentioning innocent kids in your posts, but what about the mental anquish the 6 year old in this story might have because of this guy? The mom 100% did the right thing.
I would like to point out that this is not 100% effective. I would also like to point out that we have little choice in what out taxes and insurance payments go towards. Ps if a woman gets an abortion at PP or another clinic, you aren't paying for it, so shut up. Ps do you know how many personhood bills the republican have tried to pass lately? how many restrictions on clinics they've tried to pass in order to squash their existence?
Q,
I have to totally disagree with you that she over-reacted. She was totally freaked out and you mentioned that the article "says" he was unarmed however, that's what the article says but she didn't know that at the time.
If this was my wife, I'd take her out to dinner for the next month in my appreciation of her knowing what to do during a F'd up situation. Keep in mind that she had her son with her. You weren't there to know the panic and how she felt.
Everyone reacts totally different. Not as "you" would. Only you would know how you would react. This is a woman. It doesn't say her size. What if she's only 5'2" @ 105lbs and this guy was 6'2" and 200lbs. You never know man.
Good luck in your future if you should ever be confronted in a life or death situation beating the hell out of someone with a roll of paper towels.
Have a nice........ummmm, "weekend!" Yeah, that's it! "WEEKEND!"
OMG, mark your calendar! Someone successfully used a firearm to protect themselves without shooting themselves OR the purp! I am amazed.
Jim Silver,
Not sure where you get your (mis)information, but not all liberals want to take away your guns, or are opposed to folks having them. You would probably consider me a liberal by the way I vote, and the principals I believe in, but I (and a good many others of my political beliefs) own several guns, in fact, I have a fairly nice collection, both for hunting and defense...and carry 2 nearly all of the time...a 1911 on my waist, and a LCR like the one in the story, in an ankle holster. And I also work in the firearms industry for a top US firearms manufacturer. You know what they say about when you assume...
By the time the child was exposed to the perv in this situation, he was already witness to to much. Are you suggesting that watching his mother blow this guy away would have been less traumatic?
She did not properly challenge the perv. She did not simply ready herself for defense, she pulled a loaded, cocked weapon in a situation where a more mild show of force would likely have done the trick. If i am wrong, and he did not back down, then she would have already been in contact with her weapon as he commenced his attack.
This is central training for those of us that carry none lethal force, in fact, it was central to my military training to learn how to be ready without having a weapon already on target.
Things would have been a whole heck of a lot different if a weapon was identified by this woman. Maybe she did Identify a weapon, but that is not what the story says.
@kozakura,
Planned Parenthood recieves federal funding. So do many of the clinics that perform abortions. I'm not totally against abortions. I think it should be allowed for when a woman is raped, or if her life is in danger due to the pregnancy. Other than that they shouldn't be allowed. There have been reports of women getting an abortion because the fetus turned our to be a girl and they wanted a boy or the other way around. Also, the time limit for having an abortion needs to be capped at 12 weeks.
QE137, are you trying to drum up business? A better question yet, why would she wait to see what other intentions he had? He was a pervert from the word go. It wasn't a damn floor show, so why in H would she want to wait and see what other garbage he had intended for her? I really have to question your motives here, like an ambulance chaser for one.
@QE137,
There is no law in this country that says a person first has to challenge a perp before drawing a weapon. Yes, she pulled a gun, but if you read the article she then put the magazine in and chambered it. She should have had it already chambered.
-------------------------------------
Why wait? You really have not been reading what I have been saying in other posts have you?
You wait because the vary second you pull the gun, you become a potential danger to EVERYONE around you. It would be really sad to have an unnecessary round fired, miss it's target and end up in a kid's head who had no part in your little John Wayne guns make everything better world.
If you can not identify why force is necessary in a public place, you are a danger to everyone around you. Your self defense is not worth the life of a bystander. If you can say that your good guy bullet will not hit an other good guy in the commission of your self defense, you are lying to yourself.
You have a responsibility to every other innocent person who could be effect by your rounds to only use a gun in the most deadly of situations.
Dawg, here read it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_Parenthood#Funding
If you carry a gun and you do not challenge an aggressor with the least force possible pertaining to the situation, you are a danger and have not been trained well enough to carry a gun in public.
You fail to do this and your round goes where it should not, then no one will feel sorry for you when your facing charges.
I rarely leave home without my SIG P229 40 S&W. I've never drawn it and no one knows I have it. But as this woman's situation points out, you never know when you might need it.
But don't just buy a gun and think of yourself as being protected. Get training on how to use it and when to use it as well as self-defense to protect yourself from having the gun taken away from you. It does you no good if it ends up in the hands of the person you were trying to protect yourself from.
QE137,
As someone who carries daily, and have taken mutlitple training courses I can tell you that not in anyone of the courses did they ever say you have to challenge an aggressor prior to drawing a weapon. I compete in pistol competitions, I compete in long range competitions (excess of 1,000 yards), so my accuracy isn't going to be the problem. It will actually be the question of whether or not the hollow point round will exit my intended target and hit a by standard. I have trained in high stress situations, low light, surprise attacks, and trained in hand to hand combat. This woman did the right thing.
I love the way liberals explain you will never need a gun, and if you do will only hurt someone else, so you should not be allowed to own a gun. We gun owners/carriers hope to NEVER need to pull our guns but as I noted above in #1.33 there are many cases of terrible horrible horrendous crimes committed and you NEVER know when the next one will occur.
Like the doctor in Connecticut (William Petit) who was beaten near death in a home invasion and then his wife and daughters were raped and then set on fire while still alive.
Or the carjacking of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom who were both raped and tortured severely over hours and hours and then (mercifully) murdered.
Look up EITHER of these crimes and read what occurred. I don't even want to type them now so you will have to look them up. But have a tissue ready because after you read what happened in BOTH cases you will have a tear in your eye AND a hatred towards the scum that committed these crimes.
Tthen come back to me and tell me why THEY should have not been allowed to carry a gun. If they HAD carried a gun maybe these crimes would not have occurred. NOT having a gun certainly didn't make a difference but HAVING a gun sure might. So I carry and I carry every day. I always have a gun either on me or within 3 feet of me unless I am on a school campus, in a government building, or at the airport.
Other than that I have it with me and PRAY that I never need to pull it and use it - but I will and I'll blow away ANYBODY that is a threat to my family or I. God have mercy on any scum that invades my home or try to carjack me. I am a gentle giant and will help ANYBODY in need - but threaten my family or me and I'll blow you away like the scum that you are.
I honestly can't believe you could say this. There have been republicans that have said that, even in the case of rape. There are also numerous republicans that have supported a personhood amendment, which would make abortion illegal. You're either totally ignorant of what a lot of republicans believe, or lying.
Hey, "LIES" (or, ProBusiness): on your comment at #1.8 - You carry your gun where? I'm still laughing at your list way down here...
1)At the grocery store, 2)at the movie theater, 3)at Home Depot and 4)at the gas pump. Hahahaheeheehoha! What are you going to shoot at the gas pump - the pump, for the high prices! (Never mind asking about the other 3 places.) Hahaha.
By law, there are three reasons to use a concealed firearm:
A criminal adversary must have or reasonably appear to have:
A. The ABILITY to inflict serious bodily injury. He is armed or reasonably appears to be armed.
B. The OPPORTUNITY to inflict serious bodily harm. He is positioned to harm you with his weapon, and,
C. His INTENT (hostile actions or words) indicates that he means to place you in jeopardy - to do you serious or fatal physical harm.
I'm not sure that a guy masturbating on a park bench and asking a woman to watch qualifies as 'threatening great bodily harm.'
I hope she doesn't get into trouble.
I think everyone is missing the big point of the story: What is a guy supposed to do for entertainment during the Obama economy? This is what it's coming to.
I can see QE137 holding a pistol right now, sweating bullets, shaking like a wet chihuahua all the time holding it out as far as he can staring at it with "big" googly bulging eyes.
Q,
Just messin' with ya man. No pun. We all have our opinions and I do respect yours.
CD
Hey, "Lies": concerning the 'movie theater' - you don't live in Aurora, Colorado by chance, do you?
If so, that really (for sure) is not funny!
A heated argument can easily escalate into an assault, but that doesn't mean you should pull a gun every time you get into an argument.
I don't think you (and others) are really appreciating what QE137 is saying here. He (or she?) isn't arguing against using guns for protection, it's about appropriate use. This is (frankly) why some of you 'gun nuts' scare the likes of me, because it sounds like you would pull them when not necessary and potentially escalate situations that don't have to be.
@CorrectIt,
Can you name the top 5 most robbed places in America? 5. Gas stations 4. Commercial location 3. Miscellaneous (public place or park) 2. Residence 1. Street/Highway.
Also, in Aurora, CO the movie theaters have made their establishments gun free zones, so by law it is illegal to carry inside.
I carry at all times because you don't know where someone will try and harm you.
Let's see, there was no mention of her being in any kind of legal trouble so I assume she had a permit to carry. The only curious thing is the indication that she carries her weapon and magazine separately. That makes little sense as she would probably have discovered had this person attacked her.
Little irony there .....she was gonna "blow" his brains out! :O
Dawgfan: You're from Aurora? (Doesn't sound to me like you are.) You don't know what I was pointing at? The news is a few days short of 2 months old.
Also I wonder if you ever read (or remember) what Lee Oswald told the police a couple of days before President John Kennedy was assassinated.
CorrectIt: You laugh at my carrying a gun and you despise me for being able to ultimately protect myself or my family but when your house gets invaded and all you have on you is an oven mitt I pray for you and your family. Then you laugh about my carrying a gun to the supermarket, mall, or gas station. Tell me, whenever you read of a crime where do most occur? Either in a parking lot of a grocery store or mall or at a gas station.
So I am not concerned with your childish laugh or irresponsible reaction. I know it is my responsibility to protect my family or myself - when seconds count the police are only minutes away. So I have the ability to protect myself. If you choose not to and you or your family is brutally raped, abused, beaten, and/or killed then when I read the story in the paper I will most certainly have a tear in my eye that anybody could have committed such a heinous crime to you or your family and WISHED you would have had a gun to stop it.
You elect to not carry and that is your choice. You laugh and ridicule me because I DO carry and that is your choice. But I have a better chance of seeing tomorrow in the event of a vicious attempted crime tonight then you do - and that is your choice.
Reminded me of Basic Training in 1971, A fellow soldier screwed up by calling his rifle a gun! He was told to stand with his pants down and yell out "This is my Weapon" pointing at his M-16 and "This is my Gun" pointing at his penis " This is for killing"m-16"This is for fun"penis! She just had a new way of teaching this very simple lesson!!!:D Sorry Dean, just had to tell the story!!
@Correctit,
No, I'm not from Aurora. So the shooting in Aurora is 2 months old. All that did was point to another place that people that intend to do harm go to because they are considered gun free zones.
You can laugh at all of us that make the decision to carry on a daily basis because this is a free country, but let me tell you that the only time I have ever had to draw my weapon on someone it was the longest 15 minutes of my life holding that person at gunpoint while waiting for the police to show up.
ProBusiness and Dawgfan: I work at two jobs. If either of you could guess what those two jobs are and what they entail you might take back most of your last comments. They are both jobs that I have doubts that either one of you would be willing to fulfill on a day to day basis, longterm.
And as for the conslusion that both of you seem to come to concerning what my end and my chances are - I think you are pretty much wrong.
Yet you two did guess correctly that I do not carry a gun.
And it is perhaps people like you two that make my daily jobs harder - and No, I'm not a security guard! OK!
@correctit,
In my years on this planet I have worked at tons of jobs. I've worked on farms, I've worked and built a landscape company, I've worked and built a security/bodyguard company, I have been at desk jobs, and I have delivered pizza, and worked in bars. I would be willing to do any job you throw at me. Right now I work in the insurance world and make investments on the side from my personal funds. I would have joined the military, but a leg injury disqualified me.
You did'nt say anything "Dawgfan" that changed anything that I wrote. You did not mention anything that resembles the jobs that I hold. And I still tell you that if you knew what my two jobs are you would take back most of your previous comments (even the ones that you did not make directly to me). I also still say that you would not likely be willing to fulfill the jobs that I care for on a day to day, longterm basis. (But it doesn't sound to me, according to your own self description, that you are willing to care for any job for the longterm.) Additionally, I am over 50 years old (I did not say how many), and I did perform military service; but I am not criticizing you for not being able to. (likewise, probably only a small percentage of people would be able to fill my current jobs.)
OoooOO I know... Mall Cop?! No? Nursing Home butt wiper guy???? CorrectIt noone wants to play guess what my job is aka my d!ck is bigger than yours. You are wayyyy off topic. Congrats you don't want to carry a concealed weapon. Well I live in one of the only stupid states that does not allow concealed carry but I wish it did!! So everyone gets your opinion already. You don't like it. Well we do. And no matter what you do for a living won't change our minds. You have a @!$%#ty job. That's nice.
ProBusiness, I question the numbers from the Guns Save Lives fact sheet you posted.
1. Guns are used in self defense 2.5 million times per year.
2. Less than 8% of the those acts result in the weapon being discharged (ok, that's 200,000 discharges per year)
3. Only 2% of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal
That means 4000 innocent people are shot every year, or roughly 11 innocent people are shot in the name of self defense every day. Is that really correct?
My (implied) conclusion is that if you had all the training and especially all the understanding that I have received, you would put away your guns and anything else that you weren't born with.
But on both of my jobs, fortunately, my employers wisdom is great enough to not even allow me or any of my work partners to carry any kind of weapons; If I carried a gun it would only aggravate the weaklings and bullies and psychotic people who do, especially Mindie above; right!
"Would have been sad if she squeezed off a round or 2 and 1 of those rounds made it to someone innocent. A flasher should be handled by strictly none lethal means.
If anyone's self defense rounds make it to 1 of my children, the person responsible for the round will be in jail and I will quite possibly own everything they have. I don't care if you thought you had to pull a gun or not.
Own a gun? Stray round? You pay. Quite possibly with your freedom, most certainly with your pocketbook."
QE137 - Actually, you're right on two counts. In my training, I was taught that you don't pull the trigger unless you are afraid that you or a third party is in IMMINENT danger of death or serious bodily injury. And your judgment of the threat must agree with what a reasonable person would believe to be a threat. So - based on the information given in the story, the woman would NOT have been justified in shooting. But she didn't shoot; she met the threat with an appropriate response. Actually, the flasher WAS handled by non-lethal means.
Second - you're right about "stray" bullets. I was taught that if you shoot to defend yourself, even if you're found to be justified, and you hit an innocent third party, you can be liable for criminal AND civil charges. That's why carrying a weapon is an awesome responsibility, not to be taken lightly.
I carry openly (as opposed to concealed) and on at least two occasions, the visible presence of my firearm has caused potential perpetrators to look elsewhere for easier prey. I don't hunt, so have never shot at anything but a tin can or paper target. BUT - if my wife or I are threatened, there's nobody to protect us but ourselves. That's why I carry, and why she will be, once she gets sufficient training.
Wow, name calling already?! Apparently you don't read very well. I do not carry a gun. It is illegal in my state and I am a law abiding citizen. But really calling me psychotic? Make you feel like a big boy to insult people?
Mindie - move to AZ like we did. Never regretted it for a moment.
"You wait because the vary second you pull the gun, you become a potential danger to EVERYONE around you. It would be really sad to have an unnecessary round fired, miss it's target and end up in a kid's head who had no part in your little John Wayne guns make everything better world."
QE137, I only had to read a tiny bit of what you posted to see that the only thing you're doing, is speculating. She could have done this, she may have done that, but, the fact is, what she did drove the pervert off with no harm to anyone. Try living with the fact, that you're not always right about everything. Not you, me, or anybody, is ever going to change what she did. And what she did, was drive a pervert away from her and her child, and she had every right in this world to do it exactly as she did, to do just that, whether you agree with it or not.
You got my meaning dead on accurate. I personally do not carry guns for protection and I have been trained not to need them. Do I wish everyone where disarmed? No. What I want are for people to stop using guns without understanding the danger of those actions for others.
It is deeply disturbing to know that people simply think that the only consequence for using a gun is the death of the bad guy. If you have an opportunity to buy a gun for self defense, then you have an opportunity to also learn physical self defense as well. The more secure you feel about your ability to handle a situation without a gun, the less danger you pose to others around you.
There is that saying that those that carry guns are insecure about a certain part of their body.. Well, thats a total joke.. I do think some people that chose to carry guns are insecure about at least 1 thing... I think they are insecure about their ability to physically defend themselves if necessary.
This whole thing started for me not because I said that people should not have guns, but that they should be totally held accountable for their use and they they should find the least violent and dangerous way to confront a danger, If for no other reason but to ensure the safety of others..
For all of this, I was wished physical harm, I was made fun of, and I was generally attacked.. What dose this say about where we are as a people? I honestly do not think I berated anyone one time as I was being attacked... Why is accountability so worthy of attack? Why would everyone be ok with someone pulling a gun in a situation where such force may have been totally unnecessary?
The woman's comment that she would blow the guy's brain out was totally unnecessary, and after pulling the gun, she sent the dog... She could not have sent the dog first? Yep, seems like someone had watched to many westerns and got a bit excited.
Fact is that she should have been speculating what might happen when she pulled the gun. She had options, she failed to use them and in so doing she needlessly endangered people. I don't know about you, but I don't want people in my hood wiping out guns and threatening to blow peoples brains out. This says to me that she was not awake, she was not scared, she did not feel like a victim, she felt like pulling a weapon and making an unnecessary comment. Again, why not send the dog first?
Me? Always right? Na, I have made some stupid mistakes in my time but I am happy to say that one of them has never been to get hot headed with a firearm and forget the human lives I might be endangering.
Liberals have the bizarre idea.
Should have just stopped right there and you would have been completely correct.
Interesting how many people think that exposing yourself is worth death. Disgusting? Yes. Worth killing over? No. If he tried to rape her then OK. In fact I wonder what would be more traumatic for the 6 year old? Seeing the mans' penis or seeing his brains spread across the forest floor? Reading some of these comments it's easy to see why we have a history drenched in blood.
Me and the liberals I know don't oppose guns, I own several myself. Just because we think there should be limits on the firepower and that people really have no need for 100 round clips doesn't mean we oppose anyone having guns. If she'd have pulled out a machinegun or flamethrower I'd have a problem.
I have a few guns, I don't carry any with me. I just like to shoot at targets. I reckon that if I thought I needed one, I would carry it.
I am as old as I look (73) but too stupid to realize that I am not the man I once was. I still feel like I can cover the ground I stand on. Wishful thinking probably.
I bought my daughter a pistol when she turned 16 and taught her how to use it. No guarantee of anything but it at least gave her a fighting chance.
Non-sense taken care of: now THAT is my kind of lady. I wonder if she's married? Or perhaps she has a sister.....
Qe137 seems to be the poster boy for the liberal's weak effort to support gun control. Bunch of whiners, but if trouble comes they'll be hiding behind those who would protect them!
I've owned guns for years and have had a concealed carry permit for the last 4 years. I've never been forced to pull a gun on anyone, but if that should happen I'd be prepared to protect myself. I admire the woman this article is about and wish other women would take the same measures to protect them and their families. Qe137 and others like him may need their help someday!
To the people complaining that a woman was at a lake alone and had no business being there.
The lake isn't really a lake. It's more a small body of water that is nestled inside the city of Longview. I lived there for 5 years. On one side of the lake there's a large hospital and next to that is an elementary school. On the other side, there is a low to middle income neighborhood that is old. The north side has a gas station and burger king and the south side has a major road with more houses. It's a very open area and it's very easy to see from just about in any direction. There are some large trees and a small park but otherwise it's open and not very secluded at all. There's a police station a couple blocks from it.
There are crazies there all the time and a bajillion sex offenders; it's a place where a lot of transient sex offenders hang out because the cops suck there. There is severe meth problem in the city as well as a heroin issue in the city. Cars and homes are broken into all the time and it's got its typical small town mentality. I regret ever moving there and I'm so glad I moved the hell out of there when we had the chance to.
Well for one he exposed himself to a child. For two, people that get a thrill from exposing themselves to those who weren't looking to see it, very very often ramp up their behavior to include assault and rape. Personally, I just don't care to have a person that acts like that existing in the world.
Dawgfan - I'd say the lady was probably a liberal. After all, she told him to leave or she would shoot. If she was a conservative, she would have had 2 Uzis and a Luger, and would have shot off any available bodypart INCLUDING the one he should have had covered before saying anything to him. Then she would have calmly called 9-1-1 and told them that she shot the guy in self defense. :) I can stereotype too.
StoneCold-363654
Warmth, sunshine, and legal concealed carry here I come!
Hahahahahahahahahahaha. That's SO funny. Way to go lady. Scare the hell out of the pri*k. That made my day. Thank you!
I was always told that if you lock and load: You are supposed to shoot! You do not point a loaded gun at somebody as a threat! This was a non lethal situation and the woman, her child and dog should have walked away and called the police, anything else is just plain STUPID!
So Ed, no prisoners of war huh? Everything is non-lethal until the event.
Try again, Ed.
To all the gun fanciers out there, remember she could get the same result with pepper spray; actually she could have actually used the pepper spray and skipped the threat. Likewise with the dog. By the same token, she may very well have cured this guy of whatever madness ailed him.!
The acid test is, was her life in danger? If so, then she was justified in using lethal force. The only thing he pointed at her was his pecker, which does not qualify as a lethal weapon. Had she shot the guy, I assume the DA would have pressed charges for shooting an unarmed man. If she thought her life was in danger because the dude was waving his wang at her, then she needs a reality check. Yeah, it's obnoxious and shouldn't be tolerated, but doesn't justify using lethal force.
The responses I've read here are typical of the gung-ho, shoot first and ask questions later crowd. That kind of thinking gets people in trouble whenever firearms are involved. And yes, I have a CCP and own several handguns.
Wiley - Was her life in danger? Maybe not. Well not this time. Sex crimes tend to escalate once the thrill goes away for the offender. Did she shoot? No, but she got the results she wanted. Was he armed? You don't know that, do you? I say good for her. He'll think twice about doing that again. It is proven by cold hard statistics. For the antis out there, crime goes down where concealed carry is allowed. My father-in-law watches statistics every day as an insurance agent. Not only does crime drop, it drops dramatically. I say good for her! (Currently living in the only state without concealed carry. Thanks Chicago...)
Men are in general much stronger than women. This man had already proven not to care about social boundaries and could be considered mentally unwell. The mentally unwell have a higher probability of lashing out and harming others. Also those that commit crimes of a sexual nature tend to escalate the behavior in order to gain greater thrill, she had no way of knowing if he planned to escalate during that encounter, especially if she refused to participate.
Point is, he's male and already proving in her presence that he cannot be trusted. I have no problem with the assessment that he was a potential risk to her life, not to mention her son or her dog.
If he didn't fire his little gun why would she fire hers?
Ed, you don't know what he might have been planning. He was wanking, but he could have been planning to hurt her or the child. I think she did just what was right - pointed the gun at him - not shoot him - and get her point across. I kind of wish she'd called the cops and kept him at bay with the gun until they arrived. I'm sure the words "I've got him at gun point" would make them hustle. SHe could have solved their problem. Either way, just walking away may not have been the most prudent thing to do.
bet things got a whole lot smaller a whole lotta fast. too bad the dog didn't get him a bone for a "souvenir".......
I wonder, when she said "I'll blow your brains out", which head was she aiming at?
The dreaded "bubblegum" double tap.
Triple tap --- a personal best.
Probably some scumbag lawyer would go after her if her dog bite this outstanding citizen!!!!
shrinkage
Bet a Dollar she didn't really say "Brains"
Armed irate mother and dog owner - 1
Deranged sociopath with penis in hand - 0
My guess, the movie will be better than the book.
Feel good story of the day
I hope you mean "feel good" in a warm, fuzzy way, as this flasher was going for a "feel good" story.....with a happy ending!!! :-)
LOL
So ,,,this ..is your brain on drugs?.....
GM Scooter and Bill
Seems the perv didn't realize, until too late, that he bet and she raised the bet to an "amount" he couldn't afford. I'm surprised there wasn't a "brown streak" the perv left behind him by crapping himself during his hasty retreat!
Perv: "Oops, sorry ma'am. I guess I'll beat it now."
GM Scooter, Jack and DB...
DB, I am ROFL.....
and for an old lady, this is not a pretty sight...
GM Mimi!
Yeah, the perv must be scared crapless by now since his bowels had to loosen up on him somewhat!
Only thing wrong here is the sequence of events....it should have gone...BANG.....and then.... 'You need to leave or I'll shoot you. ' one less perv.
shoulda fired a warning shot thru his head - the little one of course!
Jack, you will need to be more specific! It seems that both his heads were little!!
somehow i dont think that is what he wanted blown.
agreed .... extremely poor choice of words.......too bad she didnt though.
Ladies Ladies Ladies,
Put the magazine in and slide one in the chamber before going out. BUT DONT COCK IT, AND MAKE CERTAIN THE SAFTYS ARE ON .
I know! I was wondering how he stuck around long enough between her pulling out the gun and loading it.
it's an LCP, when you load one in the chamber it IS 'cocked' as much as a DAO can be. Please describe where the 'saftys' are on an LCP?
The real point folks is that if you are going to carry, your weapon should be "hot." I'm glad this worked out the way it did but if it was a mugger instead of a flasher she would not have time to, as she said, “... put the magazine in my gun. I cocked it,”
@my post -
You could be right, but sounds like that dog was well trained... don't count him out.
scooter,
That's how most accidental shootings happen. Especially not a good idea w kids in the mix. Thought you had more sense than that...
Finderator, that is why the safety was invented. Unless the gun model she used does not have one.
She probably had a 15-round Quick-Mag...which takes
less than a second if you're good and practice at it!
If I was her, I'd be carrying a 1911-style
Springfield TRP Professional which will
pretty much waste your target with it's
great accuracy and STOPPING POWER.
Just make sure you get a fast-draw holster
and a laser sight and then PRACTICE your
skills...doing MANY quick draws until
it's second nature to aim and fire
double and triple-taps (i.e. ACCURATELY
fire two or three rounds in quick succession)
Since you'll MOST-LIKELY be in a CLOSE QUARTERS
combat situation, do your practice shots from less than
3 metres away...aim for upper mid-chest and once you
get your shots off..quickly assess the surrounding area
for other assailants and then QUICKLY MOVE AWAY
from the perp to prevent him/her from pulling their
own weapon on you.
Be aware that
BULLETS DON'T ALWAYS STOP PEOPLE RIGHT AWAY!
Pop, Move and Assess...Pop, Move and Assess!
Those are the Mantra's of a good on-the-ball shooter!
dave
original article had NO picture or description of the firearm.
fiderator
all things must be taken into account, if you are not capable of same don't own firearms in the first place, the foot you shoot may well be your own.
The Ruger 380 LCP is a nice little weapon. It is small enough to carry all day and you can barely even tell it's there. It weighs less than a pound but packs a pretty mean punch. It is only accurate from within about 10 feet though. The magazine holds six shots and you can have another in the chamber (6+1)
There is no safety on this and it is a single-only action gun, meaning if you have racked one into the chamber, all that is required is a pull of the trigger. As you pull the trigger, it cocks the hammer back and when you reach a certain point, it fires. I was very nervous about carrying this gun hot for awhile, but the trigger pull is extremely long and it is almost impossible to accidentally fire it, definitely not a hair-trigger.
Many handguns have no safety nowadays, so be safe out there.
You need to reread your owners manual, the LCP is a double action pistol. A single action pistol is one where the trigger only releases the hammer (manual cocking only). Additionally modern guns are far safer than older models. Between trigger interlocks, striker blocks and grip safety's it has become extremely difficult to accidentally discharge a firearm. (some idiots still manage it, never underestimate the ingenuity of an idiot) but compared to something like an original colt SA .45 the difference is immense. There's a reason that you never carried an old single action revolver with the hammer on a live round.
It is a single-strike, double action.
I stand corrected.
Fabulous story!!!!!
"The alleged flasher is described as a “white male in his early 20s with short dark-blond hair and wearing a gray hoody and dark blue jeans,” the paper reported"
Should be easy to find him in the USA.
Especially in NYC. Cant be many left there
Ok, so it was washington state ,, somehow it would be a better story in a major city.
Great work! A mom to be proud of! I wonder if he will remember this the next time he thinks about exposing himself again.
This one's for the girls!!!.......................Martina McBride.
Wow, not one post so far about how citizens shouldn't have 2nd Amendment rights. Way to go lady!
The story may have been different if both people involved decided to exercise 2nd amendment rights.
Waynero-Except that the gun the sicko was holding couldn't shoot quite as far.
Or as quickly.
I half expected some gun control addicts would be posting here by now. I guess they are too busy trying to get the Secret Service to turn in their guns and carry baseball bats.
I'm a gun control
addictadvocate. I have never heard anyone say that the secret service, or members of any other gov't agency should turn in their guns.Right..?? My guess is that they are all probably commenting on the other 30 articles where guns were used negatively. I love guns as much as the next guy but holy hell people like you give all of us a bad name.
I am a liberal. I own 14 guns, one is an Uzi. I shoot a 45.each week with a group of 12 persons. I am 74 years old and by far the best shooter in the group. The other 11 members are very conservative and can't shoot worth a @!$%#.
Bobr110, I presume you are pointing out the fact that it doesn't matter if you are a Liberal or Conservative - either may own a gun and some are better at using it than others regardless, correct?
If so, well said.
I'm also a liberal and all for guns. My only thing is that every single gun sold should be tracked just like a car. Too many guns "disappear" and end up in the hands of criminals. And it's so easy to go to a gun show and come out with a bunch of guns with no papers.
Guns don't disappear. They are stolen or sold. Don't worry, all the people with legal guns, the government knows about. They have been keeping records for decades.
Go back into your basement and hug your gun like the NRA sheep you are.
Some of us haven't joined NRA we are just patriotic Americans with guns.
lloyd,
You're probably one of those people who hate the cops or the lawyers unless you need one. Not every gun owner joins the NRA. If you're ever approached by a thug with a gun who's pointing at you, ask him for his membership card.
One has nothing to do with the other.
davey: In your world that is your reality. In mine all should be prepared to defend against all enemies. Foreign and domestic.
Well, I'm just saying that owning a gun has nothing to do with patriotism. You can have a gun and not be patriotic and you can be patriotic and not have a gun.
Nice sentiment, being prepared to defend against all enemies. But, are you kidding? You are not prepared to defend against all enemies, and your gun will certainly not help you do that.
The 9/11 hijackers were enemies, foriegn enemies. How was your gun, or any gun supposed to stop that?
Fact was FBI had them under suspicion prior to 911. A lot of things beside's 911 happened even though the government had information. I will agree it will take more than a gun.
you show me yours and i'll...
blow it off... literally!
I'll bet he whipped it back in real fast!
more like became flacid - faster than the speed of light! Then it shrunk so much it ended in his anus.
There is something wrong here, where is the husband of this woman? She should have held the gun on him until the police arrived. I think this woman is imagining things and wishing for cock fight.
Why is something wrong because there's no husband around ? She could be a single mom (never married, husband died); husband could be deployed with the military; husband might be working and Mom frequently takes the 6 year old to the lake for one-on-one time while Dad works. Lots of reasons for no husband to be around.
Why must a woman have a husband?
Yeah, I think DRAGO-1006726 just likes to stir the pot.
Don't know the origin, but "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle".
Sounds like this lady knows how to take care of business just fine.
Um, Drago...
she is perfectly capable/allowed to take a stroll in the park if she wants to. And she should be able to do it without being bothered by some creep. No need to ask stupid questions like "where was her husband?" idiot...
hey drago: should she walk 10 paces behind her man too! What a throwback you are; go back in your mind.
Drago, you are an idiot!
Interesting Drago but your geography is a bit off... in this country we girls are actually allowed out without a man to guard us. You might consider a country with a slightly drier climate if you expect women to ask a man's permission to leave the house.
Maybe it was just something that god intended to happen...
Or...she could have a female partner.
Got to blame somebody other then the pervert?
Same thing happened to my wife but all she had was a bagel in her hand, which she threw at him like a ring toss. Then she laughed so hard the guy went skulking off into the woods never to be seen again LOL
How does a flasher wear a hoodie and blue jeans???? The flashers around here just wear a coat LOL
Why do people hate us perverts so much? So what did the pervert do wrong?
It was a park. There are kids around and he's whipping out his loaded weapon. I think if the lady could do it all over she would have held him at gun point until the police arrived. People don't need to be running around showing kids their private parts.
people don't need to be showing their private parts to ANYBODY if they don't want to see it!
@Slimyone --
What makes you perverts think a woman would be turned on by you, or anyone else, exposing yourself or jacking off in public? Stop reading those porno mag's Forum and Letters! That kind of stuff only happens in your wet dreams, not reality. If you don't women to laugh at you or threaten you with a Ruger .380, wise up!
Slimyone, you are an idiot.
Hopefully that will stop him from doing that again! Nicely done by the woman...
Won't stop him. Next time, unfortunately, he may just ambush the woman, tie her up, and do much worse than just flash her.
Sexual perverts and pedophiles don't "learn their lessons." They escalate their crimes and they cannot be "cured." They. Cannot. Be. Cured.
It is not a sickness. It is a malfunction of the psyche that makes them predators of some of the most vulnerable of society, that the "justice system" refuses to acknowledge and protect.
screaminmimi: I agree. She should have taken away his incentive.
More guns = less crime. way to go young lady.
She's kind of an idiot if she's carrying a gun with the magazine removed, if the guy was really going to assault her, game over. Lucky it was just some weenie pulling his pud.
that's pretty much my thought on this as well. with that kind of thought process, i wonder if she had bothered to put any rounds in the magazine.
He'll need Viagra from this day forward for the rest of his life just to get it up. hhahahahahahahahahaa
She should have held him until police arrived. This jerk is still out there. Way to go lady. You are a hero.
The police would have probably arrested her, because he was not life threatening.
golden
The police would have done nothing. I had a pervert on the beach doing the same, and I ran and got a policewoman. She said; "Oh yeah, we get some of those guys around here. " and drove off. This woman handled it correctly. Pull a gun and shoot if necessary. These pervs are not all harmless many go on to rape or kill.
Yep, blame the woman. Typical bs....
