To Ed M: We are defending our borders and with Obama as President we have done a very good job of it, with the numbers of undocumented immigrants going way down. But the defense has to be appropriate. If Mexico were firing rockets into Houston, military action would be appropriate. Apparently you have some anger management issues. I did not say they would solve the problem but bring "the peace process back to life", ie not completely side with Israel on everything and actually take a fair and balanced approach to the situation. That is one of the reasons they or other 3rd party candidates will never be elected. AIPAC has such a tight grip on politics in the US as described by George Washington (what he described as "the foreign influence" in his Farewell Address) that anyone who is not firmly sided with Israel is slandered and derided from any positions of power (see Chas Freeman in 2009 but there are many others).

Hamas is a sadistic organization and they must be eradicated! They fire rockets from residential areas, and use Palestinian civilians as human shields in order to deliberately increase the chances of Palestinians civilians getting killed!!! Hamas has been firing rockets on civilians in Israel for years, and it's time someone put a stop to it.

The only reason there aren't many more casualties on the Israeli side, is that all the people in Israel know they have to seek shelter immediately when they hear a siren. And now with the deployment of their new Iron Dome anti-missile system, they just shoot down most of the rockets that Hamas fires into Israel with the intention of killing as many civilians as possible.

In a way I think the Iron Dome is the best example of the stark difference between Hamas and Israel. Hamas spends all their time and resources in order to build rockets that target civilians indiscriminately, while Israel spent all its time and effort to build a system to protect civilians! Not to mention the lengths they go to in order to minimize civilian casualties on the other side as well.

Israels military is one of the most advanced in the world. The fact that Hamas has taken it upon itself to lob missiles at a country that, militarily speaking, is FAR superior (and Hamas SHOULD be aware of this) indicates a hatred for Israel that goes beyond all rational thought. Israels military could sweep through Gaza in days, perhaps even hours.

While it is Israeli missiles that are causing widespread death and suffering in Gaza, it is Hamas' decision to provoke them that is causing Israels military response.

This is a deplorable situation. But as long as the extremist elements within Islam hold onto their rabid hatred of Israel, this kind of thing will continue the norm. Sadly, I don't see the Jewish/Muslim conflict improving in my lifetime. In fact, I fear it can only get worse.

Still, bad as this situation is, I believe, as the more rational posters here do, that Israel does have every right to defend themselves.

Does the military of Israel represent their population views? Does Hamas represent the views of Palestinians? So could the people broker a deal and then be able to live amongst each other? So is the issue that the representatives have taken up war with each other and are no longer able to broker a peace deal? I don't know the answer to these questions since I do not live there. But I have over the years seen evidence that from the Israeli side that many ordinary citizens want peace vs revenge. Is that true for the average Palestinians? I think this is key. If both sides feel they have public support for their agenda, nothing changes. If the winds begin to blow differently than the status quo, then perhaps there is hope for the future.

With respect to Obama's comments, it will not sit will with those in Arab countries. Back a few years ago, Obama would have quickly sided with the Arab world suggesting the Israel wasn't doing all it could do to look for peaceful solutions. The rocket situation has been on-going but gets little press. Perhaps Obama is beginning to realize that just extending an olive branch when the other side isn't ready, is futile. The truth is American diplomacy in that region has failed. It is impossible to straddle the fence and somehow broker a peace agreement. Both sides want something and only they can negotiate a solution if they really want peace. If citizens from both sides want peace then it will happen. If not, the violence will escalate.

FALSE. Israel stopped occupying Gaza in 2005. Since then Gaza has been Palestinian-ruled, by Hamas. though calling Hamas Palestinian is a bit incorrect, since the leader of Hamas is Iran. But either way, Hamas has ruled Gaza for seven years, and instead of providing schools, hospitals, etc, for their people they have used much of their foreign aid (of which they get TONS) to buy weapons to attack Israel. Why, given the chance at self-rule (or, as I said, Iranian rule), do they instead concentrate on bombing Israel? Also, why does Hamas not make efforts to work the the leader of Palestinians in the West Bank, through Abbas?

Neither side is without blame here. Israel responds to somewhat harmless rocket attacks with unnecessarily heavy fire power. The Bibi government uses the rocket attacks to stoke anti-Palestinian feeling in Israel, in order to placate his right-wing supporters.

It is hard for Americans. There is no clear right and wrong here, no easy one-sided support. Instead the problem is nuanced and complicated. American media cannot handle nuanced and complicated anymore, in the era of FOX and MSNBC shouting back what people already think at them all day. So American media ignores the complexity, siding with one side or the other, and therefore Americans do the same.

One thing both the Palestinians and the Israelis have over all of us Americans is that they know that conflict and war is messy and unclear, especially when the combatants are also neighbors.

It is not about land, it is not about peace. Hamas, as a surrogate for Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the rest of the Islamists wants nothing short of the end of Israel. Israel has not occupied Gaza since the Oslo Accord in 2009. Gaza is self ruled with an elected parliament. Unfortunately, they elected Hamas to represent them. There will never be a true peace as long as Hamas stated goal is to destroy Israel and occupy Jerusalem.

But in the 1970's and in accordance with the Camp David Accords Israel and Egypt both receive exactly the same amount of US foreign aid - dollar for dollar. Each country uses that money to buy Arms from the United States, Israel for self-protection and Egypt to control the radical Muslim elements in their society. So keeping with your logic (lol) every bomb, bullet, grenade that goes off in Egypt can also be blamed on the United States based upon your allegations. How do you negotiate here? Let's face it, they've been negotiating for decades, have reached agreements and the Palestinians have broken every agreement. The fact is that it has never happened. The only way to have peace with someone who wants you gone is to win a victory. The national debt grew from billions to trillions under Ronald Reagan, with his "trickle down" theory of economics, which Bush Sr. called "voodoo economics" at the time. Basically, Romney promised to solve a debt grown primarily through "trickle down" by giving us more trickle down. At the same time, he wouldn't make cuts to corporate welfare or the military, which are some of our largest government programs. The only way to afford this would be to borrow more money from foreign countries. One of Bush's former economists announced that Romney's tax plan was impractical and couldn't work. He knew this from experience.

Romney supporters claimed corporations needed more money to prevent out-sourcing and create jobs. American CEOs made 42 times what the average American worker made in the 1980s. Today, CEOs make 343 times what the average American worker makes. America's corporate heads are wealthier than ever, yet Romney was only promising to throw more wealth their way. America has a record number of millionaires and billionaires at the same time this country suffers record unemployemnt. Know where the new jobs are being created? In China. Apple had more wealth than America when 15 kids in their Chinese ipad factory killed themselves.

What America has is not socialism, it's Keynesian economic theory - the same as every other developed nation on Earth. However, no other developed country is nearly as capitalistic as America. We have the longest work week, the fewest unions, and the largest wealth gap of any developed country. Europeans don't have to deal with out-sourcing because they have labor representatives who won't allow it. Europeans work fewer hours for more pay than Americans. In fact, Europeans have a saying: "Europeans work to live, but Americans live to work!" America has the most billionaires of any country. Poverty stricken China has the second most. India and Russia are 5 and 6 on the "number of billionaires" list. So much for trickle down.
