New York City extends gas rationing; Bloomberg cites holiday travel crunch

A New York Police Department officer directs cars at a Shell gasoline station on First Avenue and East 96th Street on Nov. 9 as New York City begins to ration gas according to license plate number.

Gasoline rationing for drivers in New York City has been extended through Friday.

The odd-even license plate system for gasoline and diesel purchase, instituted on Nov. 9 following the aftereffects of superstorm Sandy, was scheduled to end on Monday.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced Sunday he was extending the emergency order, even as the long lines at the pump have diminished. Bloomberg noted the major travel week ahead due to Thanksgiving.

"The odd-even license plate system has worked well and helped to reduce wait times and lines at the pump," Bloomberg said in a statement. "With 30 percent of gas stations still closed and a major travel week coming, I am extending the successful odd-even system on gas and diesel fuel purchases to ensure we do not risk going back to the extreme lines we saw prior to the system being implemented."

Sandy caused significant flooding and damage to petroleum infrastructure throughout the tri-state area, forcing terminals and distribution networks in the region to close. An estimated 30 percent of gas stations in New York still are not operating, and this week is historically one of the heaviest travel weeks of the year, Bloomberg said.

Gasoline rationing on Long Island was lifted at midnight on Friday after eight days. New Jersey lifted its rationing after 10 days.

Some drivers in the Big Apple complained that the rationing was inconvenient.

“I don’t like it because it doesn’t serve the purpose of getting gas when you need it,” Luis De Pena, 63, told The New York Times. The retired nursing attendant in Manhattan said had to wait an extra day to fill up his car because he did not have the right license plate.

On Thursday, New York state notified 13 gas station operators it's going after them for violating the state law against price gouging.

The 13 stations include two in Nassau County, three in Suffolk County, two in Westchester County, one in Brooklyn, three in Queens and two in the Bronx.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said his office has received "hundreds of complaints" about price gouging after the storm.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Idaho, why am I not surprised? Last night, these two Spud monsters killed an innocent little monkey. Today, likley the pair are out snaring, trapping and torturing innoccent wolves. These men are like the USDA employee Josh Bransford who enjoys trapping and torturing wolves and bringing toddles to kill and torture sites. Idaho is not a civilized state. Idaho is a corrupt state ruled by brutal men. There still is no decent animal cruelty felony law on the books. These mental midgets run around brutalizing and killing domestic and wild creatures. The state is among the most corrupt in the nation. These monkey killers epitomize the typical Spud. A major clean-up must be done in this bizarre and sick state.

Gene Gilbert

HUH?

Obviously Ravensong misplaced a post but you can glean a reasonable idea what it's about.

Your post, however, is simply an embarrassment.

As far as the rationing is concerned, it's Bloomberg brilliant. Just imagine all the increased revenue they will collect from the price gouging going on.

The real outrage should be that more than 2 weeks after Sandy nearly a third of the gas stations are still not operating.

Obama promes to end the red tape to provide a better help the victims of Sandy. FIMA is a disaster have incompetent people, burocrats groups receiving remuneracione in hundreds of thousands by doing nothing. Romney was right. The money received by FIMA would be better managed if each State has its own system of emergency. The federal Government gradually this taking of functions of each State creating a large bureaucracy and more regulations that ultimately make everything more difficult and more expensive

Looks like New Yorkers are going to need a little more patience. All things considered however, at least they still have access to gasoline. With all that the eastern coast has been through, there is still much to be thankful for this holiday.Because of the early warning system in place, so many lives were saved before Sandy struck. As well as giving people warnings about the North eastern winter blast.

Hopefully people this Thanksgiving will reflect upon what they have, instead of what they have lost. Considering how much damage has been done and the number of lives might have been taken by Sandy and what followed had we not had our modern warning systems and technologies. The resulting effort which so many people have put forth to reach out and help has been wonderful. I hope and pray the rest of this winter will go far smoothly.

Bloomberg will soon decide that the odd/even rationing will be permanent, regardless of supply. And he will likely place traffic enforcement agents at gas stations to make sure the rules are obeyed. Anything that he can do to make it more difficult for motorists and commuters he will do. He hates drivers. But he loves the revenue they bring in via traffic and parking fines. He and his ilk like to call things like this a "Win Win" for everyone. BTW, Be aware of any politician that uses the term "Win Win for everyone" in a speech. It usually means that everyone gets screwed.

Pure stupidity. None of the stations are enforcing it. Anybody can get gas anywhere they want and nobody will say a word. Bloomberg is just showing how out of touch he is, like he always does. Can we get rid of him already? We, myself and just about every other NYer, are sick of his stupid ideas and bull@!$%#. Bring back Guiliani. At least he cared about the city. Bloomberg doesn't care about anything other then fattening his wallet and making himself look like a dick.

Bah, the media will just promote Wall Street's Candidate, just like they did for the President. And before the lib's start screaming foul.. check the history of the DoJ with cases filed over the past 12 years, kind of scary thought, there were ZERO Corporate Level hearings (let alone convictions) that were initiated under the Obama Adminstration.

Funny how Obama's last campaign, key focus was trying to connect Romney to Bush, how did he know how? Easy... he also supported those same objectives... in fact, he has not changed on single Bush motivated legislation, that deals with the Central Bank.

There are no shortages, and no lines so it is ridiculous to continue this gas rationing. The Holiday is one reason to discontinue it.There are Gas Stations on property at JFK and Laguardia Airports.Airports are International free trade zones and are not subject to the same restrictions. It would be up to The port authority of NY and NJ to decide if odd even gas rationing continues,Bloomberg has no say.People also top off their rental cars at these stations. To refuse them gas means the car rental company will charge them $9 a gallon.I hope The Port Authority is not going along with this.

Due to the Heavy damage to infrastructure this rationing of Gas has been introduced. There might have been damage to even Gas Stations. This would avoid long queues. This is a short term measure. It will be lifted soon.May God give the Strength and Courage to the Americans to Rebuild their Lives and Infrastructure much better. GOD Bless the Americans. GOD BLESS THE USA.

But 'jacking up' new and used car prices ... well that is okay. 'Jacking up' airfares during the holiday periods ... well that is okay. 'Jacking up' hotel rates during the tourist season ... well that is okay. Somehow in all this great economic mix of free enterprise and the principle of supply and demand, apparently the pricing of gasoline somehow does not seem to follow the basic laws of economics.

Gasoline is considered a necessity like food, and most states have laws against increasing prices following a declared disaster. Any other time, gasoline is free to follow the market - it goes higher in the tourist season just like everything else you mentioned
