Police search for possible serial killer in Brooklyn, New York

Updated at 11:35 p.m. ET: Authorities are searching for a possible serial killer who has gunned down three Brooklyn business owners since the summer -- police believe the victims could have been targeted because they were Middle Eastern.

Detectives who specialize in hate crimes and FBI analysts who specialize in behavioral analysis have joined the case, authorities said.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Monday that police are trying to identify a tall, balding man with a mustache who was seen on surveillance video carrying a black duffel bag near the scene of the latest shooting. NBC 4 New York has learned the same man was also seen on video near the second shooting in August.

Authorities say two other possible witnesses seen on video have been questioned and released.

The latest victim, 78-year-old Rahmatollah Vahidipour, a Jewish man from Iran, was killed Friday in his women's clothing boutique on Flatbush Avenue.

"The possibility of a bias motive here is something that can't be excluded," Kelly said.

After the latest killing, detectives discovered the same gun was used in the fatal shootings of two other shopkeepers when ballistics matched the .22-caliber gun shell casings on all three.

On July 6, Mohamed Gebeli, 65, an Egyptian immigrant and a Muslim, was found shot in the back of his shop, Valentino Fashion Inc. On Aug. 6, Isaac Kadare, 59, also Egyptian but Jewish, was shot in the head in his store, Amazing 99 Cent Deal.

There were other similarities, authorities said: The bodies were all partially obscured by clothing or, in one case, a box. The shops all lacked surveillance cameras, and the owners were alone in the store. The locations of the shops are each about four miles apart, with addresses that contain the number eight. Money was taken from everyone but Vahidipour, who had $171 in his pocket.

"We're trying to put it together. We're talking to the FBI; we're doing an all-out effort to solve these murders," Kelly said.

Kelly said it's reasonable to think the shooter had canvassed the area to find locations where no cameras existed.

"Here you have three stores where the proprietor is there by himself, no cameras in any of these," he said. "You'd have to speculate that some sort of reconnaissance was going on before the murders took place."

Kelly said they would like the tall man to come forward and identify himself. The commissioner said no one has been named a suspect and no arrests had been made.

The killings chilled local shopkeepers.

"Pretty nerve-wracking that a serial killer is on the loose in Brooklyn. You know it's the third one with the same gun," said Howard Prince, the manager of a business near the She She Boutique. Prince said police were stressing that no one should work alone.

"I mean that's not the part that concerns me," Prince said. "The part that concerns me is you take somebody's life that's 78 years old for no reason."

Kelly said city shop owners should be alert and aware of their surroundings and should call police or 911 at the sign of trouble.

Mr. Williams should take a look at history there have been many serial killer's in the NYC area over the last 40 years. Does he even remember Son of Sam or the Long island Expressway a couple years back?

I thought the guys they were interviewing were just random people off the streets. Not elected officials. So serial killers take one at a time and target their victims for a specific reason unlike a gang drive by that kills 10 rivals at the local corner drug hot spot. Serial killers are not very efficient. Any loss of life is tragic regardless. Sounds like they need to call in the big guns to help them for sure after hearing the interveiw.

. 22 is the gun of assassins only the shell casing can be traced the guy is not to smart and using a 22 auto that is kicking out his shells. Un reliable and likely to jam. He will be caught.Hopefully soon!

Burning, what do you mean the .22 is the gun of assassins? 9mm is cheaper and 9mm's are easier to find suppressors for in my experience...

Also, no other handgun is as good as a FiveSeveN imo. 5.7 ammo can shoot through vests...even the weakest ammo. I'm sort of an FNH fanboy truth be told, nothing can beat the quality of FNH weapons.

Assassins used it because it does not have a lot of power. A round in the head usually will not exit and bounces around scrambling your brains. Also the lead is so small it does not leave the grooves to match to the weapon. 9mm is fine for self protection as is the 5.7 round. Just saying a 22 gets mangled. Who ever is doing this is a punk I am thinking and not very smart using that round out of an autoloader.

    Hope he is caught soon.

Bruning brightly- don't be an idiot. First you can't trace a case unless you have the firearm in question in your possession...and anyone with a brain can alter said guns finger print in about 2seconds. New york state has wasted millions on the premise they could trace a fired casing...it doesn't work. Second- a .22 pistol does have rifled barrel which in turn will leave a distinct pattern or "grooves" as you call them(which is easier matched to an individual firearm than a caseing). A good quality.22 auto with quality ammo is very reliable....but the real reason these are a favorite of assassins other than the failure to exit is the low level of noise especially when suppressed.

Maybe Spartan but you think he knows how to change/file the firing pin? I know the barrel is rifled but with such a small lead bullet it is often mangled beyond recognition to where you do not get the land and grooves like on a larger caliber. I am no expert.

How obtuse of you to think if a person is black and they vote for a black candidate, that they are voting for their ethnic group? So have the past 40+ protestant white presidents solely been voted on because they were white? That is your logic. So way to bring race into an argument while NOT trying to look racist.

How about Coravens you look at a map and understand that a person could be from Vancouver, or even Quito, or god forbid the state of Chihuahua and they would be what.......wait for it......AMERICAN.

It amazes me when the person who is suspected of a crime looks black, how quick those that are ignorant are quick to claim that he is, but when it comes to the current President of the United States, i.e. who has the most important position anyone can hold in this country, everyone wants to point out he's 1/2 white. Well its possible this guy is half white too. Newsflash just as many whites if not more commit just as many heinous crimes than other races, i.e. mass killings.

Newsflash. People are fully aware that blacks commit violent crimes 20-40 times more frequently that whites. Its got nothing to do with poverty. Blacks commit white collar crime 18 times more frequently than whites. If you have a white collar job you are not poor!!!

The truth is we cant live amongst people of color anymore. We've tried the experiment and its failed. It failed a long long time ago, we're just slow to react. The only way all the races are going to be happy is if they have a homeland of their own. One where they can make up their own rules and be judged by their own people. Abraham Lincoln said in a face to face meeting with the black leaders of their time ,"It is not fair for us to live amongst you, nor is it fair for you to live amongst us. The only equitable solution is to repatriate your people back the continent of your fathers, Africa." The black leaders stood up and eagerly agreed with the then President. He went further by stating that a homeland in Africa would be secured by our government and settlements would be built. This is nothing new, Im sure that you have never heard of this but its true. I have original pamphlets of meetings that were printed 40 years before the Civil War in which members of our government as well as bankers, journalists etc were part of a huge organization to repatriate blacks to Africa. Even George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were members of groups like these. Our History is shaped in such a way to keep the true history from affecting our present day lives. We are held in a vice made of lies so that we cant fix our problems. Shake off the lies, stand with God and the truth.

Well, getmadstaymad, I don's suppose you can pin down that statistic a little closer to a single number, or provide some [any] documentation of your claims. Is the factor by which Black Americans exceed Whites in the commission of violent crimes closer to 20, or to 40? Or do you have any freak'n idea?

Just pulling numbers out of your butt is my guess.

BTW: Most African Americans are not going anywhere, least of all back to Africa, any more than White Americans are planning on returning to Europe. This is their country too. You're just going to have to get used to it.

IXLR8, first of all this article has nothing to do with the Treyvon Martin case. But since you want to go there, lets. You have no idea what his life path would have been. He was too young. Not to mention, he had no criminal record, so how you extrapolate that he'd have ended up in prison is beyond me. He got in trouble at school a few times for some young, immature stupid behavior. People change a whole lot after they get out of their teens. I know I did. If I was judged based on my 17 year old self, folks would have written me off as becoming a teen mom, being an alcoholic and probably being dead from plain stupid, risky behavior. But guess what? In my early 30's I'm NONE of those things. I have a very good paying job and am a stable, contributing member of society. I pay taxes, have a great set of friends and love to help others. I'm nowhere near the child I was at 17. Most of us, with a few exceptions, one named IXLR8, actually grow up and get past the teen angst, stupidity and all around bonehead behavior pof those years. We go on to do good, if not always great things with our lives. We just need time to figure it out. For you to say that some 28 year old loser did a 17 year old kid a favor by taking that kids life so early shows how moronic, immature and insensitive you are. Maybe some one can do society a favor and remove you from existence. You're taking up space, oxygen, food and other resources that can be better appropriated to someone with a heart and brain.

most of the real bad kids I went to school with are either still getting in trouble, dead or are in jail. Just because you may have stopped drinking and sleeping around doesnt mean Trayvon would have, he got suspended for bringing drugs to school, having stolen jewelry in his bag and burglary tools...hmmm seems like he would of grown up a saint.

At least Sema's heated idea didn't come to fruition with an actual act of violence and it was provoked by something more than being the wrong race near a sociopath. This serial killer does have more in common with Treyvon's killer as he appears to kill based solely on race, and apparently occupation.

I cant tell much from the picture except the man appears to be of African decent possibly ME himself , generally serial killers pray on their own race. its possible he might be from North Africa possibly Egyptian or Nubian and his motive is religious??? or he could just have a really bad attitude towards ME shopkeepers. I hope they catch him before he strikes again. maybe these were some sort of Muslim honor killings over a debt or something meaningless except to a Muslim??? there really isn'tmuch info in the story. I would like to know what the other shops were and how old were the shopkeepers, what else is in common how far apart were the shops location's. Its not healthy for a ME person to sell clothing to women you might see the woman. or offend another man by selling the wrong garb. maybe these were paid hits???

Still though, those people are monsters and deserve no mercy. I hope NYPD catches whoever is committing this crimes and removes them from society for all time.

I think that county needs to be closed off. Must be something in the water to produce 4 mass killers.

Chris, Ted Bundy was from Florida and did most of his killings around FL State University. He took a "vacation" to Washington to kill a few there but we fried his @ss at Starke prison in Florida. But you do have plenty of others serving life in a compasionate way.

Actually IXLR8, you have that backwards. Bundy was born in Vermont and lived in Philly for a few years, but he moved to Washington at a young age where he grew up and went to college. He only went to Florida for a short time. Florida is also where he was apprehended, imprisoned, and ultimately killed, but he wasn't from Florida.

          Chris,

We fried his a$$ right here in Starke, Florida. We fry alot of losers here....all the time. We would do it for free for Saturday night entertainment if they would let us...sufice it to say the serial killers tend to stay away from this region of North Florida lest they be hunted, cornered and feed to the dogs. They would rather the cops get them than the good ol boys....trust me on that.

He is one we were proud to have the honor of disposing of.

          retired40,

"well Chris 735081, your county is the bung-hole of the state, so what can you expect?"

That sounds like something my 15 year old kid would say. I bet you are 40 and retired because nobody will hire you. What does that even mean anyway?...lol.

"bung-hole of the state" If it is Chris then it is fertile enough to grow some good um tomatoes I bet..lol.

BTW, why is everyone in some kind of contest with these posts to be in the state with the most murderers like it is a good thing? Start bragging about who puts the most murderers to death each year or something....that's more honorable...lol.

They don't find any evidence to convict down here. The sharks and gators pretty much take care of that so I know it isn't us.

          IXLR8,

Ted Bundy started killing in Washington, and did most of his killing there, however he also killed in Utah and Colorado. He was caught in Colorado where he escaped and fled to Florida, while on the run in Florida he killed several times in a short period of time untill he was fianlly caught and exicuted.

Wasn't 'bragging'. It was relevant to what the guy said about so many serial killers being from Wisconsin and I just thought it was a strange coincidence that was worth discussing however briefly.

It's not exactly a tourist draw or anything.

Yeah though, the tomatoes come in ridiculously. I had some tomato plants in my back yard two year ago and produced so many from just a few vines that I lost all interest in ever growing them again.

After awhile, you get sick of eating them because you don't want them to go bad.

The obvious best next step for some protection would be for them to either have security cameras installed or at least get a $20 fake look alike hung around the entrance in plain site.

Camera's don't stop crooks. Has it stopped any of the criminals that rob gas stations? NYC needs to get rid of their strict firearms regulations and shop keepers need to take up arms to protect themselves. Even a 1% chance of defending themselves is better than 0%.

          @Lovely,

3 shop keepers have been murdered in cold blood. The first two were robbed, but last had nothing taken. This shows the killer now has a taste for blood and will continue. Killing is the only motivation. Hence the suggestion for shop keepers to take up arms and protect themselves.

Only criminals in NYC have guns. It's against the law after all.

If shop keepers actually fired at someone trying to kill/rob them, they would be arrested for unlawful gun possession, and probably get more jail time than the guy trying to rob/kill them.

            Janine,

It's not against the law. You are allowed to carry if you have a permit in NYC. It's just very hard to get one. The people of NY should sue the city because the city is infringing upon their constitutional rights. It worked in Chicago.

A .22, the murder weapon, is lighter and easier for perps to conceal, concealment being necessary in areas where citizens are not allowed to carry personal protection. NYC counter clerks are therefore easy targets while the gun control idiots suck on fairy dust.

I find it odd that some simply assume all people that say things are "hate crimes" are being racist when they say it... I find that strange on so many levels. But I also understand that the white people saying it have never been oppressed by anything except other governments to which they broke away from.

I am a white, 40's male, grew up in the South, lived in the DEEP South, educated (which is hard to say coming from the South these days, with so many ignorant secessionists) so I have seen what the true roots of racism look like. Travon Martin... I don't think it was a hate crime at it's inception. I think it was definitely discrimination that went very very badly for the discriminator, and Travon obviously. So the issue isn't with the crime, it is with the pre-conceived notion that a person is BAD just by their color, or their outward appearance.

So when you make comments like that, race BAITING comments... I just shake my head. These Middle-Eastern men are seemingly being targeted for their race. So I am sure you will begin to see these comments that you have brought to light if anymore Middle-Eastern men are murdered, because it then is indeed portraying crimes of hate and racism. Today was the first I have actually read about this, so there is a decent chance that many people don't even know about it yet. Travon Martin was ALL OVER the news based on his age, and the manner in which he was murdered. The ensuing investigation debacle is what caused the outrage by the African-American community... I don't hear outrage and "HATE CRIME HATE CRIME" for every African American that is gunned down, do you? Not everything is apples to apples guys.

Race relations still have a LONG way to go in this country, and it is going to get worse if all sides (Causacisan, Black, Latino, Asian... etc) don't stop blaming each other. I think our society (government, evangelical, media) has everyone pitted against one another while the wealthiest Americans continue to fleece us... Because if we are united, they wouldn't have the power to control us the way they do. Something to think about.

We will probably find out that this individual is someone who was recently fired from his job or former military or connected to the military somehow. We are in a sad state of affairs in this country when the people who preserve our freedom don't have the support they need when they return to mainstream society.

Still, this kind of money = power = my ability to exploit others has been a struggle with men for eons (time exaggeration of course).

A jewler in LA killed 7 armed robbers over a period of 3 years. He was wounded twice himself. Buzzer, cameras, remote controlled locking foyer, bullet proof glass and an armed guard didn't stop the robberies but did give the jewler an edge as did the firearm stations every 5 feet behind the counter.. Seems that a # of the dead hold-up men were gang members and the motivation for the robberies morphed into some kind of vendetta. eventually the jewler closed up shop and sees private clients only.

Hi Uncle Henry, I'm sad to say that there are just as many African American serial killers as there are Caucasian or other. However, African American had not been suspected of such a crime because of the stigma behind it, the intelligence to pull of such a crime for years, and the careful calculation, it has been assumed that African American men couldnt be this intelligent to pull off such crimes and not be caught. Nonetheless, FBI has changed its profile over the years, to include the possibilities of anyone being a serial killer, including women, and older people. Furthermore, It was a female criminologist that refuted the FBI's claims that the DC Sniper was a white male, but when they changed the profile that is the only reason they caught him. Hence, a majority of serial killers or serial rapist, have former military training, an extreme religous background, and of course his or her victim or victims bares a similarity to someone that the killer hates or needs to have power and control over (revenge for former pain). African American men have been guilty of domestic violence, but these are the very men that you should watch out for, violent tendencies in anyone (man, woman, any economic background) can lead to far worse crimes.

My whole point is Stop using the race card every time someone mentions Obama. That line of defense is getting OLD AND MONOTONOUS!

The person above made a statement that's it.By the way that drawing looks like Obama's son!

"..... their expertise in putting together a profile of a person who is a serial killer. We want this person caught,"

Are they suggesting, as I have long believed, that profiling is just good common sense police work that has a potential for abuse but not itself inherently wrong? How very un-P.C.. Can they legally concentrate resources on citizens who fit the profile without also wasting resources questioning elderly white women in wheel chairs who do not? The drawing would suggest the killer is himself a member of a legal minority group, that in itself does not fit a profile of a typical serial killer.

Well Dennis, the profile would include skin color and they would have to note that on any of their "perps". I think it's racist. ***sarcasm***

Tramp ..... not true at all. middle-eastern is not a race anymore than hispanic or India residents. All those groups are a mix of many races, not a race themselves.

What makes you so certain he is Black? Perhaps he is a dark-skinned Latino or even of Middle East descent.

Just because the sketch indicates brown skin does not mean that the guy is black. He can just as easily be middle eastern himself. All this jumping to conclusion about the color of a person's skin from a pencil drawing. Geez, this country has gone crazy!

There was the sniper in October 2002, who along with a young accomplice, went on a killing spree over 21 days in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, killing 10 people and injured 3 others. They had also been linked to killing up to 12 victims in other states.

Hey Blowbugger, how's that gun ban/GUNLAW working for ya?Yeah that's right you and all the criminals down there, safe in the within confines of your castle!

NAZI IDIOT!Mayor Blowbugger claims the crime rate has gone down,in NY City! Sure it has, that's why there's this moron, going around taking pot shots at every body and killing 3.What Blowbugger doesn't tell you is the truth. The crime rate is Up!

He and his gang of Criminal Morons are to busy policing those soda sizes, and any other Moronic law, that applies to sheep, like the one's living in New York, and being Stupid Enough to follow Blowbugger's Dictates. They're to busy being stopped searched and harassed by the Nazi's/Goons calling themselves cops down there!Meanwhile it's open season on Shop Keepers.Oh and I love this it's rare to here the word serial killer in New York! Really,or is it that most of the Crime is kept from the public?

I for one am so glad I have my friends,Twelve Gauge,Smith and Wesson, and Colt 45!Maybe if these people had some fire power behind them, they just might have had a better chance!

By the way good luck catching this guy. That picture looks like anybody and everybody running up and down the East Coast!

Meanwhile Blowbugger, can go back to making up more dumbed down idiotic suppressive draconian laws, and the sheep can go back to obeying them.

Whether or not you have your colt 45 or any other weapon only matters when you know attack is imminent. In this case these people are being preyed upon. If you are a 78 year old man, having lived a good life, was probably looking forward to going home and someone shot him. You'd have to train yourself to always be aware, always! and I doubt anyone is always aware even with their guns. I would say by being armed they would still be dead but maybe that while dying give a clue to who the killer is. Then they would be heros, not victims, if that makes sense. Though to someone they were already heros. So then it doesn't make sense.

What is ironic about everyones posts is that no one seems to be asking the question of "why?" this person might be targeting middle eastern shopkeepers. Hmmmm.....reads to me that everyone seems to have a united unspoken understanding of the possible motive - and that the real question, is who? Am I reading it all incorrectly?

OFCOURSE, it is quite possible that it is not racist, but pure hatred of you as a person that you have witnessed. From your comment, it is quite believable.

I hope they are looking for the owner of a local security store. If he keeps killing those without surveillance camera's, he's going to have a nice pay day when they all hire him to start installing.

That saying pretty much means... "I'd rather murder an innocent person than be killed".. It's not really anything to be proud of.

No, I'd say he is saying he'd rather be in trouble for carrying an illegal weapon than being carried off in a coffin by his family. I don't get how you got "I'd rather go shoot someone innocent than be killed" out of that. Those who obey the law don't carry if it isn't legal. Those who do not obey the law, like people who shoot shopkeepers don't care about the law and will carry anyways.

Mewers, what it means is gun law or not if he tried to rob me his ass would be dead or I would be. At least I would have a fighting chance.

The gun laws in New York or restrictive but they don't ban guns. Just like opening a store in New York is harder than everywhere else getting a gun is harder but worth doing.

Making it harder is not going to help with inexperience people getting a gun (when there's a will, there is a way). An actual shooting test should be added before the gun is released to person buying it. Maybe this might help people become a little more responsible and understand how to use it properly. Most people are idiots because they think it's a toy to look cool with and should be used to settle any dispute. Start taking responsibility for being an adult and stop looking to the government to be your parent.

this not a targeted crime against store owners from the middle east, this is a crime targeted against stores without video cameras and staffed by one person

This should be a non-story. The bigger danger to residents of NYC is "big gulp" sodas. That what the city needs to be concentrating its resources on.
