Subscribe to RSSFour men, including a former member of the U.S. Air Force, have been arrested in southern California and charged with plotting to kill Americans overseas by joining up with al-Qaida to engage in "violent jihad" or Islamic holy war, the FBI said late Monday.
Other charges the men face include plotting to bomb government facilities and conspiracy to kill Americans.
The authorities said Sohiel Omar Kabir, 34, traveled to Afghanistan where he planned to introduce the other suspects to his al-Qaida contacts. Kabir is a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan and served in the U.S. Air Force from 2000 to 2001, according to the Associated Press.
Also arrested were Ralph Deleon, 23, of Ontario, Calif.; Miguel Alejandro Santana Vidriales, 21, of Upland; and Arifeen David Gojali, 21, of Riverside.
If convicted, the men face up to 15 years in prison.
The FBI said in its complaint that Kabir introduced Deleon and Santana to radical Islamic teachings in 2010, including those of al-Qaida leader Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed by a U.S. drone in Yemen in September 2011. The U.S. has said that that al-Awlaki was the inspiration behind a series of attacks and plots against Americans.

In one conversation with an FBI confidential source, Santana and Deleon discussed their preferred roles when it came to carrying out attacks. Santana stated that he had experience with firearms and that he wanted to become a sniper, while Deleon said he wanted to be on the front line but that his second choice was handling explosives.
Both men also indicated they were willing to kill people they perceived to be enemies.

Deleon is a lawful permanent resident alien who was born in the Philippines, and Santana is a lawful permanent resident who was born in Mexico and has applied to become a U.S. citizen, according to the FBI.
In July 2012, Kabir traveled to Afghanistan, where he continued to communicate with Santana and DeLeon and arrange for their travel to join him there, according to the complaint. Kabir said that he would wait for their arrival before heading to a training location and that they would meet members of the Taliban and al-Qaida when they arrived.
In September 2012, Deleon and Santana recruited Gojali, a U.S. citizen. The three men discussed how to raise funds for a trip to Afghanistan, and how to train and carry out attacks. To prepare for terrorist training overseas, the men started training in southern California at firearms and paintball facilities.
With a power vacuum caused by the current uprising in Yemen -- and the severe wounds suffered by the Yemeni president that have forced him to hospital in neighboring Saudi Arabia -- the U.S. is accelerating its covert operations to eliminate al-Qaida linked operatives in the troubled nation. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.
Santana, Deleon and Gojali were arrested on Friday and then handed over to federal authorities following their hearing in a U.S. district court in Riverside, Calif., on Monday afternoon. Gojali's hearing will be continued on Nov. 26. Kabir is in custody in Afghanistan, the FBI said.
Since the Sept. 11 2001 attacks, the U.S. government has stepped up surveillance efforts to catch both domestic and foreign militants, but has repeatedly warned that such groups continue to pose a threat.

I have always been opposed to surgical targeting over in the desert. The reason: They are liken to cancer cells that wrap around old women and small children. I wasn't surprised to see NBC film a dead 2 year old being paraded and toss around like a football for all to see while being caught by wailing, cursing, bearded thugs without a tear or mother in sight. But when they use our country and our children, especially cloaked by being naturalized or military to join the jihad and cook up plans to kill us in my neighborhood here...gotta draw the line somewhere.

Jonathan, I get your feelings. But when you start making laws against particular religions, you create a class of thought crime that goes against the American philosophy. You open the door for the oppression of folks like me who are atheist and before you know it certain types of political rhetoric are outlawed. Then before you know it we are living in a totalitarian country and we didn't even see it coming. Its an extremely slippery slope.
I hate to say I agree with you Hal but I do, cept when the Muslims take over anywhere they eliminate all that we consider good anyway, so it might not hurt to hit first. Im in Thailand right now and in the deep south the Muslims are blowing up everything and anyone, riding up beside people and shooting them if they are Muslim or whatever. Perhaps a non Muslim approach would be good everywhere.

No where I can find Islam defined as any kind of government or political system. To define Islam as a form of government, you must first redefine the meaning of the word "government" and to say it is not a religion you must do the same for the word "religion". Our forefathers never meant an ideology like this to hide behind the Constitution while working to destroy it.

The Quran and hadiths provide countless prescriptions for how to run your business (read up on Islamic banking), how to treat Muslim and non-Muslim captives in war, what to do with their wives and children, how big you should build your house, how you should relate to female co-workers, and most importantly, how it's the duty of every Muslim to maintain and sustain the Islamic caliphate.

I have and I notice you did not address the over 100 verses in the Quran advocating violence against the non believer. I stand by my statement and I have read the Quran and parts of the Hadith and don't bother saying you can not understand it without a Muslim explaining it. We can only give them 15 years for plotting to kill US citizens in our own nation? That gives them 15 years within our prison system to "recruit/indoctrinate" more followers! Acts like this require a more severe punishment system. Life in prison as a minimum. No contact with others. Meals designed along the lines of traditional Muslim peasant fare. Enough room to live in and to place their prayer rugs. No unmonitored visits or no visitors. Medical attention as provided to the average peasant in Afganistan.
One of them even spent a whole year in the U S Air Force...a whole year...wow...what kind of discharge did he get and for what reason did he not fulfil his enlistment? As a veteran of many years, I spit on him for his disgrace...not that that would bother him, but it is symbolically pleasing to me and probably to other vets.

The article talks about "radical Islamic teachings" involved in these conspiracy crimes, but who is it that speaks for Islam to decide what is "radical"? From what I can tell, there is no named authority to say what is really in bounds or really out of bounds for Islam. The so called radicals have as much authority as those who say Islam is a religion of peace. Are we going to get to a point in time where Islamic teachings are so closely linked to terrorist teachings that there is no meaningful difference? Maybe radical Islam is just getting more than its fair share of public attention, but given the large populations supporting it today, it sure seems to be the mainstream Islam. If its mainstream Islam that wants to kill Americans and bomb US facilities, what should be done about it?
Give them their day in court, if they are found guilty, lets not keep them in our jails. We can show we have as much mercy as most Muslim countries. We can expel them out of our country and drop them off in the center of Antarctica. From there, they can make their way to whatever country they wish.

Have you ever read of the founders beginnings and life as recorded by his contemporaries and child "wife"? The destruction, mass murder of men women and children, rapes, torture and greed? Good job by the FBI, and I am sure other organizations helped with the intel. We are trying to deal with symptoms but not acknowledging the underlying cause and dealing with it due to 'political correctness' and myopia. We are abridging our rights but not for dealing with the issue, just for trying to maintain the status quo (and not achieving that) and that is sad. The UN is worse than a joke and we need to get out if it, get them out of our country, and act as a sovereign nation that protects its citizens.
Obama will keep them in the country and give them free Obamacare for their "conditions."

There are communities of Muslims and they want to insert their laws into the laws of the countries they now live in. Yes I am talking about the sharia law. Have any of you researched that law? If not you should. As for their holy book well just like bible it means different things to different people. As long as we allow them in without guide lines to citizenship and assimilation we are in trouble. Our laws have to first, I don't mean that their customs have to go away after all that is what makes us a great country but if they want to live here America they must be Americans first.
