I feel bad for the child because she can't live her life - excel in academics and have her own family

I feel bad for her parents because they have lost a source of joy to themselves

I feel bad the kid who brought the gun because he will see a flashback of the gun going off and killing the poor girl the rest of his life

I feel bad for the other students who saw it because they will have a PTSD session everytime something goes pop

I feel bad for every student in the whole school - they knew the girl and know she was shot in her bus seat and isn't coming back

I feel bad for school bus driver who is now torturing him/her self about what could've should've would've

I feel bad for the school itself because they may be sued out of existence - but how they could have reversed this or prevented it - who knows

I feel bad for everyone - the only winner here might be the PI lawyers - sometimes they are the only ones who profit from these things

maybe you don't live in a safe city, despite what you "empower" your city to be.

sometimes it's not safe for a woman to walk around at 4 a.m.

sometimes you get away with it.

    sometimes you don't.

learn to live with an imperfect world.

My God - who told you it would be safe at 4 a.m. to walk any city street ?

maybe your city just isn't what you think it is, despite your happiness groove that you carry on your sleeves.

no, it's not a safe city for a woman to walk around in at 4 a.m.

proof, and despite this you claim you need to have a safe city.

there goes the idealism of any city. down to truth and consequences.

here's a novel idea - despite how you feel about yourself, there's a better chance at galavanting your empowerment in the daylight hours.

apparently empowerment means little, to nothing after dark, despite what you THINK it should be.

I do love all of your points, as they are valid and all realistic. But it still does stink that in our free country, we have to worry about the safety of our streets. Whether it be noon or midnight. I hope they do find him because this is BS.

You may think it's sarcasm but in some countries it is a crime for a woman to roam the streets at anytime alone. Do you think maybe they did this for a reason? Do you let your wife or daughter roam the streets with out some sort of protection? Mine carry guns! This guy wouldn't still be walking the streets.

To everyone lambasting anyone leaving comments saying something about not walking around at 4 am, we get it, you are idealists who believe in a woman's right to go anywhere at any time. That's great for you, but lets make this clear, no one is saying that whoever the @!$%# who did this isn't completely to blame for the actions he took, and your idealism did nothing to stop this from happening to her. Everybody, myself included, is sorry that this happened to her. She was attacked by an inhumane piece of garbage simply for trying to get home. However it is a long known fact that walking through the city (or anywhere for that matter) by yourself at night is a bad idea that puts you at an unnecessary risk. Had she taken a cab or walked with friends (as I always do when getting home in philly) this might not have happened. Sure, as an adult it is your right to walk home at night, however your doing so is certainly a bad idea. The fact is that the night is inherently more dangerous than the day. That idea is not exclusive to women, as some of the you seem to like to turn this into a sex issue, however as women are a highly targeted demographic for violence and as this story is concerning a woman, maybe it is apropos to bring up this increased risk. We live in a @!$%#ty world and it is ultimately your own responsibility to make sure you reduce the risk you put yourself in, that risk isn't just from bears and wolves, but people too, particularly when you cram a ton of them into an urban area. And you know what, once they catch this guy and put him in jail, that risk wont have diminished at all.

I'm sure your not going to walk around the worst areas of your city with a bag full of money on your back, because you know that there's a decent chance somebody out there is willing to kill you over it. It wouldn't be your fault for being shot, there is no law against walking around with money, and it would be awesome if everyone were nice and nobody would harm you, but that's not how it is and you understand that it would be a bad decision. You know that that would be a bad decision as much as you know being alone in the city at night is.

Its all well and good to write how you support this girl and what terrible thing should happen to the attacker, but that does nothing to prevent these things from happening in the future and is really just about making yourself feel good. And to anyone bringing up women's rights in other countries and related issues, that is completely irrelevant to this discussion and your sarcasm makes you sound like a complete idiot given the gravity of the situation. No one is talking about taking away women's rights, and no one called her a whore (except richardharrow who was apparently trying to sarcastically defend her, you certainly did a great job of that). This is not an issue of women's rights, it is an issue of decision making and being realistic about the risks involved in any situation. If this had happened to a man it wouldn't change the fact that he should have avoided the risk. People make bad decisions all the time and nothing happens to them, other times bad things do, but the fact of the matter is there is no point taking the risk if you can avoid it.

This is freedom American style--criminals are free to do what they want because Wild P would rather cage everyone, blame the victim for thinking America is free, and leave the streets to criminals--perhaps that's his hope anyway.

You are right, she was asking for it. Those damn whores, always whoring around. They are bound to get their come upins. Me and you are on the same page Durbanski. Anyone out at 4 am. should get a nice slice to the face to remind them that it is bedtime at 9 pm. Americans must not have mothers now a days. Am I exempt though? I work 3rd shift and I eat my lunch at 4 am. Do I get a pass? I cut myself shaving the other day. We will call it a wash. Damn shame to mess up that beautiful face though. You know some places through acid on their women for being out and showing their faces. That's an idea. See, you almost feel bad about how she looks now because you can still see that she is hot and her will doesn't seem to be broken yet. A nice dowsing of acid to the grill will send a message to everybody that it is bedtime and we wouldn't even have to deal with seeing her beautiful face on TV at all. Well, just a thought. its 2:09 pm. here in AZ and its about my bed time. Good night yall! Go to sleep!

I sincerely hope the FBI obtains your true identity and gets you somewhere of the streets and far away from mentally sound people. For you to suggest she needs her face washed with acid makes you a crazy son-of-a-bitch and you need to be put away,

Sounds like some of you are saying the the city should pas a law that says all sane people cannot be out after midnight, that only crooks, and other criminals and other violent people can be out. The police then say that they won't patrol between the hours of midnight and 5 AM and they .the criminals, then have the right to commit whatever crime they wish between those hours.

How sick. It may be idealistic, but people should be able to walk down any street in their city no matter what time it is.

What he did was illegal, not to mention sick. Walking down a street, no matter the hour is not. I hope he is caught soon and punished to the full extent of the law. Maybe if criminals are properly punished, the law abiding citizens can go about their lives without living in fear.

As a grown man, I would think twice about being out by myself at that hour. THE FREAKS COME OUT AT NIGHT. I bet she doesn't wander the streets by herself anymore.

I read an autobiography of two women who worked at an airplane factory, and left the factory around 1:30 a.m. http://www.amazon.com/Slacks-Calluses-Summer-Bomber-Factory/dp/156098368X

Even in the 1940's, you used common sense of

        walking in twos

        standing at bus stops,

do not take or walk the same route home twice in a row (the women alternated between their apartments)

being aware of your surroundings at all times.

The factory supervisor made sure that the women who worked there knew a few martial arts moves to protect themselves. The women did get accosted one night, but used their high school teacher voice-of-authority and got away.

I am not aware of any city where walking around alone at 4 a.m. in any decade or century was a good idea.

Excusing the behavior of violent men and blaming the victim assures that assaults on women will continue. Just because bashing women, physically and emotionally has been a time honored male tradition does not mean it should be tolerated.

Stop Blaming the Victim. Not everyone can follow all your advice about safety. Sometimes a woman has to work a third shift or was out late helping a friend. What this gal does is her business and she has a right to walk home anytime of the day or night. Women need to begin at a young age learning about self defense. That should be taught by parents. The state should also special training and special gun permits for women who feel they need them.

                            Reply#20 - Wed Nov 21, 2012 9:12 PM EST

whatever the reason for a woman to be out late also has to consider being escorted, the problem today is that women are being told that it's fine for them to be out alone and this is only increases their chances of being a victim. my mother has always told me that a woman should never ever be out alone, live alone because you attract undesirables who know that you have no one to defend you from them and she's right and I've always listen to her and have not been a victim of a crime against a woman. because I use my brain I know that I'm no match for a man's strength and will not challenge it.

Not everyone can live like your mother prescribes. You are incorrect that you can not challenge a mans strength. Women do it everyday and win because they use their brains instead of brawn. However if a woman is old or physically impaired or just too frightened to protect herself then she certainly has the right to hide or never be alone. No one has the right to dictate to another how they will handle their personal freedom.

                            Sincere sympathies to the victim.

Comment # 2.7 from "Humanperson" is well reasoned and on point.

All that choose to degrade and humiliate this victim are psychologically deranged, absent and mean spirited. With that said, we all would like to travel locally, nationally, and internationally, without fear of bodily harm, and completely devoid of any threat or ill-will. However, such an attitude or expectation would be naive to the Nth degree. I choose to believe this victim is not that naive. I choose to believe that she is single and unattached.

Her evening of socializing ended. She was not interested in sleeping anywhere, except at her own home. She did not want a bed mate. There was no one interested in escorting her home, that did not want to have sex with her. She simply was not interested in sex. She drove from a safe environment, among friends and close associates. She was alert and attentive. She arrived at her destination (home). Parked her car as close to her home as possible, which was 50 yards away. With parking on a city street, in a major city, such a distance is not atypical. Unfortunately, she was targeted for assault. Did the perpetrator know her? Was the attack random? Whatever the case, whether male or female, at that hour, such a situation predisposes any and everyone to certain risks. Even the "King of The Jungle" is subject to being mauled/maimed at night.

Ladies, relative to physical power and agility, you are no match for the typical male, no matter your self-defense training. Yes, a weapon is the great equalizer. Even with a weapon, there is no guarantee that you will prevail. The greater the number of companions, the greater the safety, RIGHT?

this is why caucasian women are the top victims because they still can't get it in their heads that A WOMAN is NOT safe walking around 4 am in the morning by yourself. and stop dreaming and complaining that it should be safe because there isn't a safe place in this world and that's why caution should be practiced always. sometimes people provoke crimes against themselves and NEVER will a woman be able to beat a man's strength.

Your assumption regarding Caucasian women topping the victims list is incorrect. You clearly have another cultures women to be hidden mentality. Not all American women wish to give up their personal freedoms and will fight for their rights. My mother when she was 75 years old got a gun and went to the police to learn how to use it. Believe me women can learn to protect themselves.
