Cops: Mass. bargain-hunter took home TV, left 2-year-old boy behind

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Police say a Massachusetts man left his girlfriend's 2-year-old son in a car while he went shopping for Black Friday bargains, then went home with his new 51-inch flat screen television and left the toddler behind.

Police, alerted by store security, found the boy asleep in the vehicle in a Kmart parking lot at about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

They forced their way into the car and took the boy to the hospital as a precaution.

Meanwhile, they tracked the man to his Springfield home.

C Michael Bergen / Zuma Press

Eager holiday shoppers forego an after Thanksgiving nap to wait in line for door busting bargains.

Hordes of shoppers hit the stores on Black Friday

He told police he lost the boy while shopping, panicked and called someone else for a ride. The boy's mother was working.

The 34-year-old man was not arrested and not immediately charged, but police say they expect to charge him with reckless endangerment to a child.

Though Black Friday officially kicked off the holiday shopping season this morning, many shoppers were already bargain-hunting before Thanksgiving dinner had a chance to settle. CNBC's Courtney Reagan reports from the Black Friday frenzy in Dayton, Ohio.

Had his own vehicle with child in it..why not look in vehicle first..and why call for another ride ( he didn't say his vehicle broke down). Something missing in this story. He panicked isn't a good reason not to check the vehicle before he left!

He said he couldn't find the car after shopping and got a ride home.

I sincerely hope he is arrested. Seriously...you can't find your car so you get someone to come get you and your precious tv, but you just leave your innocent, helpless child in a parked car in a Walmart parking lot full of who knows who???? How that isn't immature, selfish, and criminal I give up. Good thing it isn't hotter outside or this would be a totally different ending.

If that man lived in my house the locks would be changed and he would be out on his a** before the sun set.

I'm thinking he forgot the kid was with him from the get go. He went inside and blew his money on a big ass TV that would not fit in his car and called someone with a truck to come get him and his new toy and forgot all about ever having the kid with him in the first place.

No one is nominating me for dad of the century but, I'm willing to bet that this guy is just trash.

Although this guy sounds like an idiot for leaving a two year old in a car how did he get his television home? If he used his car then what happened to the kid? Hope this ass spends a few days in jail for negligence. Maybe his girlfriend should reevaluate this relationship.

Yes...and those extra hours, for extra pay, could have been extended hours ANY OTHER TIME during the next THIRTY THREE DAYS....

but creating a maniacal pushing, shoving frenzy on Thanksgiving? I just don't see the rationale.

If BUSINESS wants to REALLY put more FRENZY on...why not be OPEN ON CHRISMAS DAY for those AFTER CHRISTMAS SALES so workers can get that "extra" pay?

This idiot should definitely be locked up for reckless endangerment of a child just for leaving the kid in the car while he went shopping for his TV. After leaving the kid behind I hope that the girlfriend has the sense to throw him out on his ass. He should not be allowed to have custody of any minor since he has demonstrated that he is completely incapable of taking care of a child.

More obvious evidence of the social and moral decay consuming our society.

Only in america can people trample each other for sales exactly one day after being thankful for what they already have. Mobs in a feeding frenzy over the latest Smartphone. People shooting each other over a parking space.

And here, some miscreant overwhelmed by his new Big Screen TV goes amnestic about his car and the child he's responsible for that's in it.

AT 1:30 IN THE MORNING!!!!!!

There can be be no rational explanation for this. Temporary insanity can't even be accepted. For anyone to be so overwhelmed by the purchase of a meaningless TV to forget about an innocent 2 year old child can only be described as criminal.

But then again, when we are constantly being indoctrinated to consume more and more, this type of irrational behavior is to be expected. The advertisement prelude to the holidays is just as adolescent and manipulative as the months of campaign ads we were all subjected to. The most embarrassing part is, they work.

Any behavior that endangers the safety of an innocent child should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

"Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future." ~JFK

I, and two friends, went out of curiosity to watch the Thanksgiving "night Black Friday" shopping frenzy at places like Walmart, et. al. We wanted to see what corporatism/consumerism has done to once decent, civilized human beings. Those corporatists sure have managed to control the consumerists. What a nightmare. People pushing and shoving to get the cheapest Communist-Chinese garbage to make corporatists even richer than they are.

The most disgusting thing, which we saw at 11:00 p.m. on "Thanksgiving" night, was a mother dragging two small children - toddlers as in this article - through the store. Both were crying from not being able to sleep, one so hard he had snot running down his face. What was really frightening was the look of intensity on their "mother's" face, screaming at them: "Move! Move! Move!"

I'm one of those that hopes that Wal-Mart, if we all stick together, collapses and dies and the owners are driven into poverty. What about those "employed" by the "nation's largest single employer?" They can get better jobs elsewhere and will do so. The ones who can't will receive unemployment benefits paid for by the former owners of Wal-Mart. Tax the Walton family and all other Wal-Mart owners into destitution. I want to see the toddler daughter of one of the owners cries as the dolly she has, her last and most precious possesion, screaming: "Daddy, they're taking my dolly!" ripped from her hand by us while making her parents hopelessly watch.

He deserves to be yelled at by his girl friend when she gets home, in a way many a husband would be all too familiar with, should they annoy their wife off to no end... Whathe did was that bad. Then, it might be best if she reconsiders whether she wants to remain with a greedy jerk who would place the value of a TV over the value of her kid's life; and if not, DUMP HIM.

If they're living together in her place, this could be better yet, because she could grab all his stuff, and quite literally kick him to the curb. Notify the police "in case they do want to arrest him", then just send him packing outa her life...

How many, many times do you hear this similar story? Mother is WORKING live in boyfriend is not. Boy friend SHOULD BE watching child...child is lost or injured or even killed by non-working boyfriend being supported by mother. Women get a a grip...you do not really NEED them. As a single I know this for a fact. If they cannot support YOU AND YOUR CHILD do NOT get involved. Get county assistance to go after the father for child support.

IF this guy gets jail time he will be feed three times a day and sit around and watch TV and play on the computer all day. Just the kind of life he is lookiing for. No punishment there.

Working on holidays adds more money on the paycheck and on things like this it really doesn't matter if you agree with something or not. Doubt the mom cares that much about her 2-year-old, if she's already with a guy like that. She does get credit for having a job, which the BF likely doesn't. He probably doesn't own a car, either. A 2-year-old needs a car seat, which means that was the mother's car the BF took - and left, with kid inside - to Walmart. The reality is, most guys would rather have a big screen tv than a 2-year-old, even when the kid is their own. ;-) Hopefully, she's been using birth control; a vasectomy ought be part of his sentencing.

If people want to leave their homes and families on Thanksgiving to shop, that's their business. Considering some family dynamics, standing in line to shop is preferable to being at home with them. Personally, there is no sale good enough to make me want to fight the crowds.

Not everybody loves or even enjoys their family. For these people getting together is more of a torturous chore than a joy. I say let people do what they want. If they chose to shop instead of spend time with you then at least you know where their heart lies and how they really feel about you. Then you both can move on.

Also I think people have to consider that some men do not care about another man's child the same way they would care about their own. I'm not condoning it, but it is what it is. Women should think about this before they get involved with a man. I've heard quite a few men say to me in private moments how annoyed they are at having to take care of a child who isn't theirs. They can't help it, but "he or she's not mine" they say. They play favorites with their biological child, too.

Even if it is the choice of the shoppers whether to spend time with family or spend time shopping, it isn't the choice of all those retail workers who are forced to work mandatory hours. The whole Black Friday thing is a sick reflection of what the holidays have become. And we're all worse off for it. Especially the victims like this baby boy... and you know there are more stories of kids being ignored this weekend by people who place items over people.

Something is wrong with this story- HOW on earth do you take a large TV home without a car?

Please read the story! It does not say that he could not find the car; he told police he lost the child and panicked and asked someone else to come get him and the TV and went home. It was store security that alerted police to the child sleeping in the car, and forced the door opened to get the child. Total BS. If you lost the child, you would alert security right way...They could look in the store, and also look for his car in the lot. One doesn't just drive off with a TV, if a kid is missing. He undoubtably couldn't get it into the car, so figured he would leave the kid in the car until he got the TV home, then he could come back for the kid. Too bad that alert people saw the child alone in the car and called the police. This guy is negligent and self-centered. He could have gotten the TV in the friend's car, then followed him to his home with the child. No excuse.

I have to agree with jerseyshoremarie... This guy's first concern should NOT have been getting the TV home, but rather locating his child. From there, had he successfully found the child then he could have as jerseyshoremarie has said, followed his friend home with both the TV and the child. It is unfortunate that this sort of thing happened... However given the craziness of the Black Friday sales... I can't help but sort of (and i use that phrase carefully) understand how it could have happened. Some well-meaning person goes to the store on a Christmas gift run... in the midst of all the unbelieveable savings and flashy new "stuff" its easy to lose track of more important things (like ones own child) At the same time though I don't like what happened and certainly wouldn't excuse this man's actions, however, if anything, this should turn into a lesson for our society to consider... Are we moving too fast in today's society? So fast that we lose track of what should be the most important to us? Anyway, thats my thoughts.

The dip-$hit probably didn't forget about the kid. He got lucky and purchased a 50 inch TV on a good deal and couldn't fit the TV into his little fuking pinto....so, he called a friend with a truck for a ride home.

Once home, the numb-skul probably got so exited about his lucky find and just coudn't wait to set up the TV.........That's when the mongaloid losts his mind and the kid became a distance memory.

Any fool can make a baby...or however that line goes. I suspect that since store security was alerted to the kid in the car, that the guy called for a ride because the TV didn't fit in his car. He then figured he'd leave the kid with the car because he was probably sleeping, and planned to drive back for the kid and the car. The story about not finding the kid was just to cover his a$$ when the police knocked on his door.

There's nothing new or unusual about these incidents. Pennsylvania has huge casinos now, and people are always leaving the kids in the car. Sometimes they get caught, and sometimes they don't. I've seen 5-yr-olds playing in the neighborhood at 11pm, and have thought about calling the police a few times.

The Black Friday phenomenon was something that I always viewed as crass, and not worth the silliness.

I agree, there must be more than this. The part about panicking and calling for a ride doesn't make sense, but then again, maybe the guy is just really selfish and dumb. Sometimes, we hope there is more because we cannot believe how people act. I guess there really are people like that out there, what is worse is that someone even dumber leaves their kid with them!

He panicked, when he realized the TV wouldn't fit in his car, and called a friend with a truck. If the cops had given him another couple of hours to watch his new TV and drink beer with his truck owning friend, he would have gone back and got the kid and car, before his girlfriend got home from work. The moral here is, don't buy a truck unless you need one for work, your friends will always want you to help them move stuff.

This is extra funny for me, I'm getting ready to score a 62" flat screen on sale, later tonight. I already know it won't fit in my car. Instead of bothering friends with a truck, I'm taking some nylon rope, so I can tie it down on the roof of the car. Too bad I don't have access to a kid to put up there and help hold it steady on the corners. This Bozo just failed to plan ahead.

I've seen stories where a judge can make people do things like hold signs that reads "only and idiot would drive on a side walk around a bus"on a street where they drove on side walks to go around a school bus unloading children, a very creative punishment for this guy would be, Bolt the TV on his head with a metal traction head gear as if his neck was broken for the rest of his life. bolt that sucker right into his shoulder bones with surgery.

Between this story and some of the responses in this blog, we are truly a country headed for trouble.

We're a country focused on television, XBox, beer, Facebook, Twitter, sports, over-eating, NASCAR and corn dogs...and we wonder why jobs are being outsourced. We complain about athletes making millions to hit a ball or catch a ball, yet we buy lottery tickets so we can get paid millions to do absolutely nothing. We complain that companies outsource jobs to countries where the workers will work for a cheaper wage, yet we hit the stores at 5am so we can get a television at a cheaper price. My God, I sure hope the Mayans were right.

Hey there, not all beer is shallow drinking, yelling, getting into bar fights, and losing your morality. The brewing of beer has been a part of human cultures since 5000 years B.C. Many people today still enjoy the hobby of brewing their own brews, different flavors and subtleties. The problem is with the people, not with the object.

And as for the Mayans, they do not think that the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. That date is simply the end of a Baktun, scientists have known for over 100 years that the Mayan calendar does not end then, it is simply a 140 year-old misinterpretation that has been Hollywood-ized. In fact the Mayan calendar extends for thousands of years past that date, as one researcher said in an article earlier this year "December 21, 2012 is about as important to the Mayan calendar as the last word on page 500 of a 10,000 page book."
