Sounds like the state of Florida is right on top of this situation: The supposed actions took place in 2009-2010, teacher quit in December 2011, moved to Texas, hearing took place in September 2012 (without the teacher present), and now, in November 2012, they finally get around to revoking a license she has not used for over a year.

If you read the article linked near the top of this one, she had solicited the massages from students in exchange for rewards (and then didn't report that one of those massages at least involved genital touching). There's nothing at all appropriate, acceptable, or politically correct about a teacher asking students to rub her body in exchange for rewards. The fact that she didn't report a student touching her genitals and then had two psychological exams that deemed her unfit for duty as a classroom teacher suggests that she has some inappropriate thoughts or feelings about children that make her a bad choice for a teacher. Just because they couldn't prove criminal wrongdoing doesn't mean she has any business around kids.

She should have reported the incident. Children who make inappropriate sexual advances are often victims themselves.

The massage thing is questionable, on top of the mental evaluations indicating her unfit to teach, does not bode well for her.

Too many incedends of Teachers doing things with students they should not occures daily. Parents it is our job to know what is going on at our schoolls. The lack of attention by Parents has allowed too many children to be abused in our schools.

Don't blame the Teacher or the school untell YOU look in the mirror and know you have done all you can to keep kids safe in and out of school.

About eight years ago the female principal,who is a fruit, at the local elementary school here gave all the teachers, which the majority are female a certificate for a massage as a Christmas gift. She then had substitute teachers come in and stay with the children in their classes while the teachers went down the hall and got their hot oil massages on school time. You had teachers getting oil massages during school hours in the school house with the children in school and tax payers paying for substitute teachers. Although it was mentioned nothing was done about that either.

Wow! Where were all these warped teachers when I was a kid? Looks like we have a whole new educational environment now. Folks like this on the teaching staff along with the alternative sex ed programs should help produce some fine, upstanding new citizens for our future.

Mr/Ms Yipes! -- I'm an ol' AZ chick, went to elementary school in IL in the late 50s. Mr. Henson used to follow us into the girls' bathroom and try to peek into the stalls. Complaints fell on deaf ears (he'd say we were misbehaving and he had to supervise; this was the FIFTIES - there was NO misbehaving). A new young teacher came to our small town, and was caught writing "love" letters to his 6th grade girls. (Transferred to another state; no charges or mention in his record.) An older male teacher inappropriately (and continually) touched a young student. Teacher was reprimanded, not fired. The parents finally took their daughter out of that school. My point is this stuff has been going on forever (altho I don't recall ever hearing about women teachers doing this stuff). It's just handled differently today.

She resigned voluntarily some time ago, and I'm betting she doesn't want the results of those psych exams entered into a court record (which they would be if she had tried to fight all of this). She's moved out of the state and chances are that she doesn't want her name and this incident dragged through the press any more than it already has been. Even if she had chosen to fight this from the beginning and managed to keep her job, she'd be under heavy scrutiny for the rest of her career and it would probably be very difficult and stressful for her. She made some very questionable choices, and I think the smartest thing she could have done was chosen to resign and not fought the issue when they took her teaching license away.

Anyway, I don't know what to say about this story. I would need to know why she was unfit. If she simply did not report a student for inappropriate contact, thats a weak reason. If it was an on going problem with this student, then, yes, I would understand.

Medicine is called a practice because as with any science discipline, it is not exact. Part of it is the medicine, the other tangent is the human body or mind. The mechanism of the brain is pretty objective, it is the inner workings and what we call the mind that can be intangible.

We do not know all there is to know about the mind or even the addition of the nature-v-nurture argument. There is much to learn and individual behavior cannot be predetermined because of the differences in the environment each individual is raised in and the differences culture and social mores and norms play into the equation.

Psychology is a science and a useful tool. Modern medicine is also useful. More people have been cured of polio by vaccination than prayer yet you find millions of people willing to pray anyway for whatever psychological cure prayer provides. God, is the ultimate placebo drug, not paxil.

Also important is that psychiatrists can prescribe medication and psychologists can't. If it was a psychological evaluation it had nothing to do with prescribing medication. Also, if you do research you will see psychology is not a "psuedo-science". The same scientific methods used to test variables in hard science are used here as well. The reason you can't get 100% accuracy is that you are dealing with the human factor. If all people were the same, same genetic makeup, same cultural background, same parents, lack of free will, etc. then it would be exact.

In some practices, a PhD psychologist can prescribe medications. The human factor definitely is a big factor in success - especially when some are really just not all that inclined to change their behavior.

A PhD. is a doctor and under some circumstances they do obtain licensure to prescribe medicine much like M.D.s and nurse practitioners, but usually that is under the license of an psychiatrist with an M.D. that is in the psychologist network. Most of those networks exist even if you do not see the M.D. listed in the local crazy doctors office you visit in your neighborhood.

Generally, I agree with your comment; however, children have not "become" after thoughts. In society, they have never had the level of safety and care that statement would infer. In fact, it may be argued that they are safer now than they have been historically, as now abuses are being discussed and addressed, albeit too often after the fact, whereas in the past they were often ignored or accepted. Modernly though, we still do not focus sufficiently on prevention.

If the child had been 16-17 the story may be different. The child could be charged with sexual assalt if the teacher could prove the actions were unwanted. Hard to convince anyone that a 10 year old had sexual thoughts.
