Baldwin County Sheriff Deputy Scott Ward, left, was killed in a confrontation Saturday with Michael Jansen, right.
A man shot and killed one Alabama sheriff's deputy and critically wounded another when they went to his home near Fairhope, Ala., on a report that he was acting aggressively toward family members, authorities said on Saturday.
The shooter, Michael Jansen, also was killed in the exchange of gunfire on Friday afternoon, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Mack told reporters that the deputies responded to a report that Jansen had "been confrontational with some family members" and were speaking with him at his home near Fairhope, about 15 miles southeast of Mobile.
"While the deputies were on scene and talking to the individual, the individual produced a handgun and began firing at the deputies," Mack told reporters.
A third deputy at the scene was not wounded.
The two deputies suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where Deputy Scott Ward was pronounced dead and the second deputy, who has not been identified, was listed in critical condition, the sheriff's office said.
Ward served as a sheriff's deputy for 15 years.
"I'm very proud of him, it's a big loss," Mack told reporters. "But he was doing his job and we'll pull together in a time like this and we'll honor his memory by carrying on."
The shooting is being investigated by the Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force, he said.

Sad time for the family but it will blow over.
Your a very wise person (sarcasm), Marcheal Gideon, 2 men's lives were snuffed out, but the end of these lives will just blow over like they were just a day of news in the wind. You should be a philosipher like Socrates, Plato or others in their class, you are excessively wise (sarcasm). You should write a book or maybe many books about your Philosophy of life (sarcasm). It seems to me that your philosophy is that we are all expendable and we shouldn't expect any better than that (truth).
this is news? really?
Cops are Evil and support the criminal laws and government.
My condolences to the family of the fallen deputy and my thoughts and prayers to the other deputy and family.
How many people were shot in Chicago and Detroit in the last 5 days...........
More reasons for a handgun ban.
Of course, MSN has to fish this random story out to try and push along their anti-gun agenda. @!$%# like this happens in Chicago, Detroit, Houston, etc.
Does one wonder why these shootings are common occurances in the major cities....?? Well.....look as to who are in the majority living there....!!! They account for 92% of the prison population across the Country....!!!
These a-holes have to be searched as soon as the police confront them.....Hands have to be exposed and NOT in pockets...If in doubt......cuff them immediately.....especially women....Better to be safe.....than to get hurt or killed....!!!
Better yet, the fascist police force should mind its own business if the alleged victims aren't the ones who called them. I doubt this was the first incident at this home. Since everyone was still alive, we can surmise that they family had worked its problems out in the past. Now, pigs show up and interfere with a private matter on private property and we have 2 dead people. Time to rethink this policy, because family can diffuse a situation much better than pigs. When people are agitated, the last thing they need is some big-headed high school graduate with a gun butting into private matters. Recipe for disaster.
There are alot of good cops out there im sure, but there are alot of bad also. And just by the look in the picture of deputy WARD,you could tell he was one who thought he was better than everyone else, and hid behide that badge.Im not saying he deserved it,but there is more to that story,he just didnt pull out a gun and start shooting.Three deputies were there so you know they weren't there for a turn the music down complaint.
Ah, W.T.F.: Good to know that your prognosticating skills are as "reliable" as usual. While I'd agree that there's more to the story, the rest you just plain pulled out of your nether parts.
Pray for the officer's family. The domestic violence call is one of the worst a cop has to respond to. You never know how it is going to end. What more can one say about the event.
This call wasn't made by the alleged victims, and this is private property. Cops should have minded their own business. This is exactly the outcome you can expect when the powers of law enforcement are too broad.
aww beer guns and country music sweet home alabama some how they will say its all obama fault LOL will 2 all most 3 piecs of white trash taking out
This is the price of having the right to own firearms, and especially handguns. They can choose to go down in a blaze of glory at any time. Must make for some tense family holidays...
I'll be more than glad to turn in my guns, after the fascists in blue do the same. Since guns would be banned, there's be no reason for pigs to carry them anymore, right?
I don't get it. Police responding to a domestic call about someone saying "bad stuff" to his family members? Amazing!
Don't you know its a crime in the south to sass your family punishable by death? Well now there are two more empty chairs for Clint to joke about.......... around the dinner tables of the cop and the guy they shot.
So, in an attempt to find out if a man was being confrontational with family members, a shootout ensued which killed two people. This is why cops should keep their noses out of domestic matters. Had they not interfered, things would have cooled off like they probably had 100x at this household. From the article, it doesn't even appear one of the family members called police. Pathetic.
Now some poor wife had to bury her husband/brother. Hey, its Alabama and I am sure he was both to her the inbreeding teabilly bastages.
I am so sorry to read of this senseless and tragic loss of life. My thoughts and prayers are with all of Sheriff Deputy Scott Ward's family and friends. We recently lost one of our Highway Patrol in a similar manner. Condolences to all affected by Scott Wards untimely death as he served the citizens of Alabama.

you tell him Charles Bubba Carver, Mark s freeman is obviously a douchebag.
1 man will miss out on everything the piece of @!$%# who shot him didnt get about family, im not saying his family are saints but thats life, i hope that @!$%# suffered horribly.
I dont like alot of cops from personal bad experience, I had my plates stolen off my car twice, yeah my fault for having a honda, but both times I was pulled over, I pulled over immediately rolled down my window turned the interior light on and shut the car off as I always do, the first time the cop walks up, I said hello officer as usual, he drew his gun on me ! screaming to get out of the car, understandably I was in shock and sat there for a few seconds processing what was going on, he screamed it again and I said "uh **** ok!" as soon as I unbuckled he grabbed me by the jacket collar and pulled me out of the car through the window face planting me on the pavement, his partner drug me forward and in front of my car so i was off the road, I asked what I did, he said shut up, at this point i was pretty pissed and said listen @!$%# I have rights, and I have the right to know what i did. he said i beat up my gf and stole her car! I told him ive never hit a woman in my life (except for my sister) and this was my car check the registration, since they had my license at that point he said it was registered to joe blow and thats not me, confused I rattled off my plate and said run it he just looked confused and said thats not the plate number of this car, im still face down in dirt and blood but can see my front plate really really well, and said look! oh @!$%# comes out of his mouth and he runs it, it comes back in my name, I get a dust off and an apology. I understand why the one cop did what he did in his place i would have busted up the woman beating prick as well but maybe i would have made sure. 6 stitches im my eyebrow and 2 in my lip later, oh and an apology, with a caveat, I should have been compliant!!!!!! If he would have said step out of the car without the gun in my face I would have done it instantly! but not doing anything not even speeding, expecting there to be something wrong with a light on my car or something, to having a gun in my face took me back. The second time i was told to get out of the car (same car by the way) I Immediately said yes sir, opened the door from the outside and then unbuckled I still was yanked out thrown on the ground and cuffed, then he tried to "help" me to my feet by picking me up by the cuffs, I dislocated my shoulder as a kid and now every once in a while it will pop half out, I was screaming stop stop my shoulder and he just kept going and it came all the way out. All that came out of my complaints and me contacting a lawyer was medical bills paid for lost wages, legal fees and an apology. pain in the ass for no reason, I was being 100% respectful and cooperative and still got roughed up. Now i dont really have the patience to deal with cops becasue there are lots of douchebags in uniform, but I would never wish any harm on them, whats wrong with these people?
I respect the job they do I know its hard, the general public are so stupid, however there needs to be much more serious consequences for mistakes, you are a cop you have power but it comes with responsibility, I dont know how many times ive seen cops at lights hit the siren run the red then shut it off and keep going normally, One time i saw a cop do that he caused an accident because he did it at an intersection at the top of a blind hill, the person driving swerved to miss the pig on his way to get doughnuts or something and hit a curb then a telephone pole, and the cop again shut his lights off right after the intersection and kept going. what a joke, some poor guy had a ruined car it was a pos so a totaled car, because Johnny law didnt want to sit at a light for 5 more seconds. I would feel completely differently about that if he hit his lights and siren and took off at 100mph to get somewhere to do his job , chock that up to bad luck, not arrogance

could have been the ther way but over Romney
my prayers go out to the families of the deputies and to their department. may god speed your recovery. it is very unfortunate that someone had to pay the ultimate sacrifice for someones stupidity.
wow doesn't take long for the anti gun ghouls to roll out.i really believe they lay awake at nite drooling and hoping for another tradgety like this to happen so they can say look, look more gun control more common sense gun control yeah yeah that the answer.freakin'ghouls!
Moronic, ignorant comments by the majority, especially the anti-gun advocates and the simple minded cop haters. This was, whether you want to hear it or not, a case of "suicide by police." Do the psychological profile studies and check the collective MO's of these people involved in domestic violence and you find a definite pattern of violence and a decided death wish. I don't know which group is more offensive. The cop haters or the Utopian gun control advocates! Civil discussion? What a joke.
I believe it was more of a murder by cop, I believe suicide by cop is when cops have harrassed an individual so much the individual puts themself in a death by cop position. I think if this guy was trying to commit suicide by cop he would not have taken one of the cops with him. I believe that he thought the cops were coming to bring severe trouble on his head, so he pulled a gun on them and fought back by killing the one he got before they got him. I believe if he could have he would have gotten them both if he could have and it would have been a longer story.
well i don't know if I'm a cop hater but i think im getting close like the nurse that got her face slammed to the asphalt in LA when her hands were hand cuffed behind her back the pigs high five each other wow good police work and the double amputee in Texas killed when he pulled out a fountain pen oh and the naked student in Alabama killed by cop unarmed obviously the cop in Oakland killed the black kid when he was already cuffed and on the ground oh that's right the prosecuted him he got a big 2 yrs in prison for killing the guy who had a 4 yr old daughter when these cops start getting prosecuted and get real time in jail maybe then they'll start getting respect as a whole
Domestics, the most dangerous situation overall for police!
Here is the deal people. The police were called to the house by family members. They did not pick this moron's house at random. Domestics and car stops are the 2 most deadly ways that police get killed. This idiot killed a police officer. These are the same folks that come to your aid if you need them. They save countless lives and get very little reward for it. The money and working conditions are not real great as a rule people. If you have the guts to sit on your fat asses and criticize police maybe you should try out for the job and see how it works for you. Then come back here and tell me how easy it is....
Was the "perp's" civil liberties being violated? The "perp" was bipolar, had been twice before involuntarily committed to a mental institution, and was about to be given involuntarily medication and possibly involuntarily committed again to a mental institution. Everyone had stereotypes of him being bipolar, pigeonholing and dismissing him as a psycho and crazy person. His aggression and confrontational behaviour had to be subjectively evaluated.
a true hero has been killed by a maniac. one of the most dangerous calls police officers do is domestic disturbances. and sicne one in four women are abused in this country , that means there is a huge chance of running into a man enraged enough to attack them too.
Please stop calling the pol...lice heros. The military are the heros. Not the donut dollies. When the revolution starts they will run like the cowards they are.
Nurses are the greatest of all heroes in my opinion.
