Baldwin County Sheriff Deputy Scott Ward, left, was killed in a confrontation Saturday with Michael Jansen, right.
A man shot and killed one Alabama sheriff's deputy and critically wounded another when they went to his home near Fairhope, Ala., on a report that he was acting aggressively toward family members, authorities said on Saturday.
The shooter, Michael Jansen, also was killed in the exchange of gunfire on Friday afternoon, the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Baldwin County Sheriff Huey Mack told reporters that the deputies responded to a report that Jansen had "been confrontational with some family members" and were speaking with him at his home near Fairhope, about 15 miles southeast of Mobile.
"While the deputies were on scene and talking to the individual, the individual produced a handgun and began firing at the deputies," Mack told reporters.
A third deputy at the scene was not wounded.
The two deputies suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were taken to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where Deputy Scott Ward was pronounced dead and the second deputy, who has not been identified, was listed in critical condition, the sheriff's office said.
Ward served as a sheriff's deputy for 15 years.
"I'm very proud of him, it's a big loss," Mack told reporters. "But he was doing his job and we'll pull together in a time like this and we'll honor his memory by carrying on."
The shooting is being investigated by the Baldwin County Major Crimes Task Force, he said.

This only supports the need for better home protection weapons. One deputy wasn't even injured. Improved weapons training by the NRA might help. Now this man can't resolve his family issues because the law interfered and he was forced to use the ammunition on them instead of the family.
Good, at least they shot and killed the whack job!!
just glad they were able to take the dirt bag out
The shooter is just another low life who thought he was a law onto himself. Unfortunately their are a lot of folks running around that think the sameway, And at some point the police usually meet up with such folks, and who knows what will happen then? Just the way it is.
Southern trailer trash are some of the most violent people in America. Combine living in a Red State with bad genetics and an inferior education spells trouble.
Yeah, because there are no gun owners, trailer parks, bad schools, inbred idiots, or violent criminals in the northern states. Wow, you are so brilliant! You must be a neurosurgeon.
nothing makes me happier than when a scumbag pig(yes police officers tend to be the biggest @!$%#s on Earth and are the worst form of human being) gets shot ; ))))
You sir, are a pig - and that is an insult to all pigs.
To those of you who have issues with the police, may I suggest that you put on a uniform and a shield and put your life on the line every day of the year. Maybe then you will know what they have to face on a daily basis. It is not a job for the weak - I know - I have a family member who is an officer. I have attended enough funerals for police officers to last a lifetime because someone else decided to end the officers life. May the soul of this officer rest in peace and may his family find comfort in knowing that that police community will be there for them always. Godspeed to the other officer. I hope he is able to recover.
The NRA would welcome back the Wild West to America once again. Everyone packing, daily shootouts on Main Street, though with one big difference, high powered weapons which didn't exist in the 1800s.Gun manufactures would make a killing! Literally!
Why don't you post something factual. There weren't daily shootouts on main street in the 1800s. They also had plenty of high powered rifles in various calibers. They also had .45 caliber revolvers back then, which are high powered. So you don't know what you are taking about.
All officers do wear a vest. Doesn't always keep them from being killed, obviously. I'm married to a cop and to the person who said they don't get paid enough for this job... you are right. His poor wife and children are victims as well. And to those who want to say all cops are bad, make statements about what happened when they know NOTHING, or make this some type of gun rights issue... GET. A. LIFE.
My husband would never and has never stolen a thing in his life. He goes to work every day to deal with the idiots of society (some of whom probably commented on here). He gets spit on, cussed at, threatened, assaulted, and more. I don't know why he likes the job or wants to do it. But I think the saddest part is the lack of appreciation and respect on the part of our society. Good grief... a man dies - another is near death - trying to protect people he doesn't even know and now more people they don't know are going to come out and judge him?
Let's please show a little more respect.
I could not have said that better myself. I too have a family member who is an officer. The don't get paid enough to the job they have devoted their lives to. I will keep your husband, along with all law enforcement in my prayers.
It's time to equip uniformed police, the same as a US soldier in the field. Kevlar helmut, vest with ceramic plate and groin protection. With MP 7 or a SBR M4 with green laser sights and CQB optics. With a pistol as a back up weapon ONLY.
A brave law enforcement officer lost his life and another was seriously wounded because of a violent white trasher, the only good thing is that there's one less inbred white trash loser . Those Southern trailer parks sure are violent places these days.
I think you need to learn how to read because there wasn't any mention of a trailer or trailer park in the article.
As if there are no gun owners, violent criminals, or any crime in the northern states. Wow, you are so brilliant! You must be a neurosurgeon.
accidents don't happen, it was this pigs fate to be shot and killed for karma( police officers are so arrogant and tend to be very mean).the way he treated people finally caught up to him and it proves it by the way God took him off the Earth
So disrespectful. He was doing his job. I know I couldn't do it, and somebody has to.
Please Stan! Crawl back in your hole and rot.
HMMM, I thought so NOBAMA is a copper! Yah fascist pig and Nazi minded stooge, go back to scaring little kids and beating yer ol' lady! YOU Fraggin' HYPOCRITE!
nah! not even close you clown.
WHY WASN'T MY COMMENT POSTED? looks like news media do not like truth!
I don't believe the police. Why does it take 3 cops to answer a domestic disturbance call? I want to hear what the family members say. Maybe the police over reacted and caused this shootout.
Because they are like the Lion in the Wizard of OZ! Dey gotta hold each others schwantzes wherever dey go intah dah forest!
Hell ~ alot of them do already!
I'm not pro or anti-gun. But I would be interested in the statistics if citizens were allowed to carry everywhere.
Many law men over the years have told me the call they dread the most is a domestic disturbance call.
This is why. Too often they are turned on by the people who call them.
Deep condolences to the families of all involved.
HEY yah racist~the wind is blowing so hard through yer ears it's hard to make out whut yer sayin' other than bullshirt! Wind down and give it a rest yah local yokel, county mounty, Smokie, er whuteber yah ARF!
NOBama- so the officers find domestic disturbances to be sexy? You said too often they are turned on by the people who call them. Oh yes baby, call your husband basta rd, that's hot. Yes dude, slap her one more time........ I am almost there. I if he is ripping her clothes off and she is voluptuous and a boob pops out it could be a turn on but most domestic situations are anything but a turn on.
One less DIRTBAG in a STATE PRISON.....
Yeah.......... one less cop going off to prison for abusing his authority and killing a husband for just arguing with is family......... You did mean the cop didn't you?

This is a tragedy and people are going to make it all about the need for gun to be taken out of the hands of everyone except the authorities. I think we need to know where the gun came from. Did he legally buy it and was a background check done? Did he have some kind of mental condition which should have prevented him from purchasing a gun? I was in a gun shop recently and overheard a conversation between a customer and the sales person. The customer was a former police officer who admitted to the sales person that he had a brain tumor and at one time was brain dead. While I was watching him hold the pistol he was purchasing the barrel on the weapon was moving almost 3 inches side to side. He passed the background check, sold the pistol and took it home that day and has a concealed carry permit.
I own several guns and enjoy going to the range to shoot and get away from my hectic schedule. If this is something I enjoy doing and it isn't harming anyone why should the gun grabbers be able to tell me I can't do it?
I totally agree. Disarming the law abiding, gun owning citizen will do absolutely nothing to stop someone intent on committing a crime with a gun. It will just make law abiding citizens more vulnerable to armed criminals than ever.
If it is just a matter of passing more laws to stop crime then there shouldn't be any crime at all in this country with all of the laws that are in place already. The problem is criminals don't care about or follow laws...That's why they are criminals. Restricting people who do follow laws won't change a thing.
Just look at all of the cities with the most restrictive gun laws & their gun crimes are out of control. Chicago is a perfect example.
There are an estimated 85+ million gun owners with 300+ million guns in this country. If you were to believe all of these gun grabbers, sky is falling babble, about shootouts on every street corner then we would all be dead already.
God comfort and be with the families of the officer that was killed. So very sad. And I agree with radioguy this is not the time for gun control opinions it is the time to think of the family of this fine officer.
As I read this story goes it seems that the lives of the officers that have been shot, one killed, are secondary to the political views here. An Officer's family will be without him this Christmas. May my Brother in Blue, Deputy Scott Ward, Rest in Peace.
Hey, whaddayu palefaces expect with a war mentality and a violent prone and condoneing culture, since Plymouth Rock! Get over it! Ur still sucking air, ain't yah! Have another beer and watch Guns 'n Roses or dah NHL, er NFL! Rollerball with real ammuniton is coming to TV next year!
My very sincere condolences to the Officers families and to the Baldwin County Sheriffs office.
I hope the wounded officer recovers quickly and fully.
I really think the police in this country need to start shooting first and then ask questions once a gun is pulled the police need to start shooting and stop being nice if a gun is pulled then they are being threaten so shoot these rotten bastards enough police die in this country every year and the memorial in Washington is filling up way too fast
RIP and my deepest sympathy to the family of the killed officer.
