State Department fire leaves worker with life-threatening injuries

D.C. Fire and EMS crews were called to the State Department Saturday morning after a fire broke out while work crews were performing maintenance in the building.

Fire officials said that the crews put the fire out using handheld extinguishers before emergency personnel arrived, but three workers had to be hospitalized.

Initially, a fire official on the scene told News4 that the workers had only suffered superficial burns. However, later Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson for D.C. Fire and EMS confirmed that one of the workers had suffered life-threatening injuries, while the other two hospitalized workers had suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Other burned workers were treated at the scene.

Officials say that the crews were performing maintenance on a duct on the 8th floor of the building when the flash fire broke out. The exact cause is under investigation, though officials say it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

It is not known if any State Department personnel were in the building at the time of the fire.

This smells really fishy!!!! Didn't they report similar stories in Benghazi? Initially.....However....Life-threatening???

Wonder what Benghazi reports were mysteriously destroyed in the fire?

Wonder if they showed up in the confetti at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade!!

Did some classified things while I was in the Army a thousand years ago. Needed my records for something and was told for years all my records were burned up in a fire. Then I finally met someone who laughed when he heard that and two senators finally got my records for me. What was really funny was that nothing I did really mattered as a secret any longer. Who knows, maybe their was a fire somewhere and the clerks were just too lazy to go get them. :-)

The right is despicable, using first the deaths in Benghazi and then the injuries to this worker to make political points.

Maintenance on a holiday weekend? That should be expensive. Thought the country was broke? I see, didn't want any witnesses around?

No $hit for brains, some maintenance jobs are scheduled out for long weekends because they are intensive.

I work at a military base and some building maintenance will be scheduled for weekends. The labor costs are higher, but we do not shut down hundreds of workers, which would be more costly. Also, even though it is a holiday weekend, certain critical operations are 24/7/365. They never shut down. Fire Department, facility security, communications, and the command post never shut down. The State Department has certain functions that are in that category.

What sad excuse of a christian has to continually play the race card when others don't agree with them?

He doesn't get under our skin because he is black. Never has, never will. He is not liked, wanted or respected because he is at best a Socialist bent on the destruction of this country as we know it, and at worst a terrorist sympathizer who turns his cheek to our true allies and aligns the US with countries hell bent on our destruction.

If you can't understand those implications you have no business voting in your popularity contest. You can't reasonably defend any of Obama's ideology so you, like all liberals divert all attention of the issue at hand away by stooping to ever growing new lows such as the race card. Nothing new...just the same old tired tactic that everyone except you and your minions are aware of.

The District of Columbia or DC as you refer to it has nothing to do with this accident. That is the "city" infrastructure and politics. They do not govern for Federal buildings. Federal buildings are mostly overseen by the OSHA, except for DoD facilities. The DoD uses military versions of OSHA. No facility or building custodian wants the facility damaged by fire. And they certainly do not want injured or dead people due to a fire. The State Department's Harry S Truman Building has been in use since 1942. I do not remember any similar such burn incidents. The nature of the fire is unclear at this time. Apparently handheld fire extinguishers could put out the fire, yet three people are seriously injured. If I had to guess, I would suspect electrical work, with a big arc flash that injured people and set several small fires going in the immediate vicinity. But this is just a guess. I hope we do not have contractors using candles to check for air leaks. We almost lost the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant due to that kind of incompetence. Lit candles + foam = raging fire burning control cables.

Hi folks, I chose this little news nugget to plant my comment about the up and coming Dec21 end of the world thing.

It's based on planetary orbital alignment but has a little flaw.

Gravity demolishes to the square of the distance.. never mind forget that..

Focus on this, the Moon only short distance away with its constant alignment can only manage to raise the tide a few centimeters as it passes.

Very unbelievable a few planets millions of miles away are going to have as much effect.

There is always Planet X which as we all know is hurtling toward earth so my suggestion is to buy extra bottles of booze to celebrate .. Cheers

It's not Planet X that will get us, it's actually a white dwarf that failed as a type 1a supernovae and got ejected from a binary system into intergalactic space.

Of course, they do maintenance on the weekend, so as not to disrupt the regular work being done during the week. This is a common practice with large enterprises. Do you live your life with blinders on?

Why waste the money for after-hours maintenance though? It's the government, it's not like anything more gets done during the week than during the weekend while the workers are away.

But it's funny NBC writes an article on this useless crap and they still to this day got nothing to say about the state dept. handling of those four Americans, funny how life is in this country, I guess they're waiting until Obama has time to approve the story.

How many died not 9/11/01?, or in the Marine Barracks bombing in 1983? Funny how GWB and RR got a pass from this bunch isn't it? I wonder how many died in Afghanistan and Iraq? There were no WMD's in Iraq, but they will make excuses for GWB.

Funny thing is, they are afraid of everything.

Construction and renovation incidents that lead to injury and death occur in many areas of the country. We have had them where I work, a military base. Contractors, government civilians, and military people have all died or been severely injured at the military base I work at. The base has been in use for 70 years. Hazardous working conditions that were accepted, and led to death, 70 years ago, are not tolerated today. We have new challenges with new missions. The changing environment leads to new situations that sometimes result in death or serious injury. We strive to mitigate hazardous processes and conditions by engineering out the hazards in the processes. We still get death and injury occasionally.

Shredders have automatic thermal overload protection built in. You would have to be somehow bypassing the protection and safety interlocks to get one to catch fire.
