Parents drown trying to rescue family dog; teenage son missing

A man and woman are dead and a teenage boy is missing after the trio were swept into the ocean by big waves in northern California while trying to rescue their dog, according to media reports.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon at Big Lagoon about 32 miles north of Eureka in Humboldt County.

Family members went into the water to try to save their pet dog, which had been pulled away by 8- to 10-foot waves, KTVU-TV reported.

The mother and father drowned and their bodies were recovered. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Times-Standard.  A 16-year-old boy, believed to be the couple’s son, was missing.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the daughter called police, according to KTVU.

The dog managed to make it to safety, the TV station reported.

This is natural selection at it's best - the dog was smarter than the owners. These people are like so many others that are walking around destroying the planet because their shoe size is bigger than their IQ. I feel bad for the daughter who had to see such stupidity come to such a tragic conclusion. Maybe she'll learn a very valuable lesson - educate yourself and make "reason" the highest priority when considering a conundrum - or even the simplest challenges of life.

Very sad for the surviving children/child,my sincerest condolences to them.

Our own limitations are projected onto animals,to bad they did not see this.

Dogs love the rough ocean, are great swimmers, and know how to relax and let the wave sweep them back in,wished they had known that, one has to admire their loyalty, they must have been a nice couple.

Yes perhaps the son jumped in to get the dog and the parents to get the son,how very sad....

Dogs are usually better swimmers then humans. Always let the dog save itself. Unless it is a little 5 lb rat dog that jumped off a pier. In that case it isnt likely to climb back up the ladder itself. But any other dog what are you going to do anyway? Grab a 60 lb dog with one arm somehow and then swim with one arm in conditions it could not manage back to safety? No you're not. The dog has it under control better then you. If it is particularly stupid call it from the safest path so it can head towards you.

Did you people ever think that maybe the parents went after the boy, because the boy went after his dog that was swept away. Just because the article says they went after the dog, does not mean that is how it happened, they don't know what really happened. If they can find the boy unharmed he could probably clear this up. But more than likely the boy drowned to. Story over.

I would have done the same exact thing that this family did.

If you are not willing to do the same, then you should go and get yourself a dog and find out how truly amazing they are!

Resident MORONS are out today. Incomplete information, led by an inflamatory headline. . . a "family" in distress. Do not presume to know their thoughts and actions, love or dedication or flaws. Seriously people, shame on most of your evil selves.

I would have done the same for my dogs, bless these two people for trying to save a family member.

I wouldn't have taken my dog there in the first place. That is not a walking type of a beach.

                      I'm willing to bet a years salary on this;

From some of these posts I've been reading, clearly some of you wouldn't even save your own mother at the cost of your life.

It always surprises me, though it shouldn't, how little minded people are willing to say anything to get a laugh out of the tragedies people and animals experience out of love and respect for one another.

Sad little people....sad little lives...it must suck to be in your skins...or rather it must suck for your families to suffer you.

Right,we wouldn't save our mothers because we wouldn't go after our dogs.My mother is a human being,my beloved dog, like everyone elses,is a dog.Turns out they swim pretty darn well.

The ocean can be a evil place for inexperience knowledge of it. Anyone going on vacation swimming in the ocean should take top priorities of a education of the no-no's. It's always sad of hearing of these deaths, they are not the first and won't be the last on losing their lives with the ocean's ways.

Those signs at the beach are posted for a reason.People need to heed those warnings. The water isn't warm enough up north to swim in no matter what time of year it is.My condolences to this young lady who will now have a very rough road ahead.

However you want to look at it .. in the end.. it became a heartbreaking tragedy of love. Neither were willing to give up on the other starting with their dog.

I can't blame them for wanted to save their dog. I sure they NEVER thought they would have a chance of drowning themselves. Very sad. If I was the daughter I don't think I could keep the dog, knowing that everyone in my family died to save it. To hard of a memory.

Screw all of you let-the-dog-die heartless bastards. It most likely seemed to them that they could pull it off, and ended up over their heads, so to speak. Granted their obligation to the daughter was the greater one, but I would try to save my dog too, especially if the kids were watching. How can you judge if A) you have no heart, and B) you weren't there.

....the dog lived. Oh man. Well, the daughter is now left with no mother, no father, and probably down a brother from the sounds of it but at least she has the dog that caused the whole horrific deal to get her through. I bet PETA is going to like this one.

I went to highschool with the mom (Mary Scott), since we attended an all-girl private Catholic boarding school we lived together like family for all our highschool years, more than just classmates... Mary was always up-beat, made all of us laugh, she was the jokester of the whole class. When the rest of us were whining we were "homesick" Mary came to the rescue with some quick wit and quirky antics to make us laugh. And so smart! She said at the tender age of 13 that she would like to become a research scientist to find a cure for cancer. She jumped into harm's way to rescue her family member, her beloved husband, so all you cruel criticiser's of her humanitarian efforts, making this all about someone "stupid enough to jump in after a dog" re-read the article, she was watching her beloved husband drown. Work on being not so quick to judge other's my friends....

a lot of newsvine commenters like to pretend they have first hand knowledge of the article. nice try, but the chances you're real are about 1 in a million. Oh and by the way, I'm actually the daughter in the article. And I support my parents decision! GO ANIMALS !!!!!!!!!!!!

...the saddest "reality" in this TRAGEDY is, if the DOG had died, they, like most people, would "probably" be SHOPPING within 48-72 hours, for a NEW one.

I love my dog but that's a big wave and some cold water for me to try to go after her. It's just like idiots that jump in to break up a dog fight; the only one thats going to get hurt is the person sticking their hands in the middle. Hate to say it but the missing kid is dead too, the pacific is way to cold to last very long

Taking out all moral and ethical considerations.. dog probably had 4-5 years left to live. Mom, Dad, Son, probably 100+ years total. Oh, and now their daughter is an orphan.
