Subscribe to RSSUpdated at 9:47 a.m. ET -- An 18-year-old New York City man was arrested in connection with the shooting of a 5-year-old girl outside an apartment building in the Bronx early Sunday, police tell NBC 4 New York.
The suspect, Angel Morales, was arrested Sunday evening. He was charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon. It wasn't immediately known if he had an attorney.
The victim, Hailey Dominguez, is in stable condition at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. She was caught in the crossfire at about 1 a.m. Sunday outside her Hughes Avenue apartment in Tremont, but is expected to be OK.
Police say the child had been attending a baby shower and was playing with other kids when gunshots rang out, witnesses said.
"It echoed, a loud bang," said a witness who did not want to be identified.

It was only after people fled the scene that the girl realized she had been shot. Neighbor Carmen Rosario said she found the child sitting in shock in a stairwell inside the building.
"I heard a bunch of screaming and went out to see what was going on," Rosario said. "I called 911 not realizing she was hit."
"She was so quiet," she said. "Then police came and opened up the jacket as I held her. She was bleeding."
The girl was shot in the stomach, police said.
Rosario said the children appeared to be unsupervised at the party when the gunshots rang out.
"There were no adults around when the girl went looking for help," she said. "It doesn't make sense."

When I was a kid we played outside at night. Believe it or not, it was safe to do so then. When a child is playing is really none of your business. They should still be safe. Blame the drugs and criminals, NOT the child.

Yes, Arizona, we also played outside until the wee hours on occaision, when the folks were having/at a party. But we weren't in the Hood, nor were we unsupervised....
Noone is blaming the child, but EVERYONE is blaming the parents, and rightly so.
Should be is not acceptable. She wasn't and the parents damn well knew it. Just because something should be does not mean it is and the parent is responsible for making these decisions. Legal ownership of a gun in NYC is difficult, illegal is pathetically easy. The Bronx is not the safest place in the city. Make decisions accordingly. 5 is way too young to be unsupervised anywhere as guns are not the only danger. A child born is a child to be raised with love and care, not some irritant to be ignored for ones own pleasure.
From reading the story, I get that this child was home alone.
Here's a novel idea. Remember "Escape from New York City"? Solves all the problems of no guns in nyc! I've been there, so nothing you can tell me that's positive about nyc. But that's just my opinion, but it's also my experience. When the British left nyc they saw the future! Yeah, I know! Chicago, L.A., and Miami ain't much better!

My very sincere condolences to the young girl. Unfortunately, you were brought into life in a hell hole called the Bronx, NY. You are not responsible for the low life gang bangers that inhabit the area you live in. I wish you a quick and speedy recovery.
To those responsible; Please do the rest of the civilized world a favor. Go out to the Fresh Kills Land Fill, and play your war games there. The only rule being no one leaves until there is only one left alive. Hopefully by that time, NYPD will have responded and lock the last man (woman?) standing away for a long time. If this is accomplished more often, fairly soon, NYC will be a relatively peaceful place.

So where I currently live is immaterial, but to sate your curiosity, it's Texas until I head back to Virginia. I was smart enough to leave NY almost 30 years ago.
Story doesn't quite add up. Multiple children, at least one about 5 years old, outside. No adult supervision. At 1 am. For a baby shower. Who was the shooter gunning for? A child? What baby shower is in progress at 1 am? How many children were out there and how old? Did one of the children have/find a gun and fire it? Considering the potential for disaster enabled by a group of unwatched children, especially late at night, quite possibly with drugs/booze flowing freely, the word parent could easily be replaced with 'irresponsible jackasses'.

For the millionth time, guns kill people. Has anyone every come up with another excuse to own a gun? Protection by killing. Self defense by killing. Innocent bystanders die by killing. Of course there is always a person pulling the trigger. Culling the deer herds by killing if you mighty hunters want to chime in except slaughter is more likely. Death rate would drop if no guns were on the streets of NYC or anywhere else. Keep your amendment argument. I do not believe the forefathers were talking about strolling down the streets of any city. They were under hostile attack on their land by foreign troops and indigenous tribes who resented the theft of their loads. Not exactly the most virtuous of men with many being slaveholders.
Something has gone very wrong with how we think when children are left alone in the streets in the middle of the night completely unsupervised. Child should go into foster care and then be adopted with any siblings since the mother is apparently a ignorant breeder. Attending a baby shower? Seriously?

For the millionth time (ok.. that's an exaggeration, just like yours), except for several WWI and WWII firearms, I can guarantee not one of the firearms I own has EVER been used to take a human life. PERIOD.
Yes, if necessary, I will protect the lives of my family, friends neighbors or myself and if doing so means taking the life of a CRIMINAL, that is their own fault. Had THEY not initiated an incident requiring such action, it would not have occurred.

Oh, the LEGAL possession of guns on the streets on NYC is very limited. By the way, it's already illegal in NY for an 18 year old to have a handgun, without a license, and use it to shoot at others. As to the 2nd Amendment, while it was and still is as much for personal and national defense, it was also as a means to ensure the PEOPLE were able to maintain control of the government. An armed populace is known as citizens. An unarmed populace is known as subjects.

As for your notion of legality, I worked in the profession for many years and can guarantee that many non law abiding citizens who are not criminals have guns. They are unstable but not criminals. NYC is my hometown. Born and bred there but gone now because of all the criminals and people who came from hither and yon to claim they are New Yorkers. I prefer the peace of where I am because I simply can ignore people like you if I chose to.

No wonder there are so many problems in the communities around NYC when everybody is still out roaming the streets in the middle of the night! Kids should be home in bed!

This report is lacking key details, the family, friends, child, etc were on their way home from a baby shower and got out of a taxi and were heading into their apartment building when the shooting occurred. No one was playing outside, as for all the stupid remarks please try to remember that an innocent 5 year old girl was shot in the stomach.
On another note, I am glad that the coward who shot her was caught, he and any accomplishes that are found need to be public whipped naked and made to wear signs saying that they are cowards and shoot children and then sent to jail. Maybe just maybe this will deter one hoodlum.

One more point.... I didn't read anywhere that is was noted a trial has already occurred where Angle Morales was convicted. Would you be kind enough to post a link for that? (OK.. sarcasm off now)
We have that document you might want to read called the US Constitution which allows for a TRIAL and a jury of your peers BEFORE you're convicted of a crime.
The NY papers here have the full story, as do NY local news reports. You know when you are suddenly caught in the middle of a shootout you kind of like run in all directions trying to get out of the line of fire, I cannot answer why the parent(s) wasn't with the child since I was not there, do not know them and havent spoken to them.
As for my kangaroo court trial of that coward ass who shot her, as a New Yorker I am tired of these young and old punks pulling out weapons and blindly shooting grandmothers, childrens, you and I and other innocents with no disregard or fear at all. I don't need a copy of the constitution to read to know what must be done to these punks to get them to finally get it and realize the pain and suffering they are causing to themselves, their families and our families.

As we all know, NBC is NOT known for posting a complete story, nor one without their own spin of the topic.
If it involves a firearm being used illegally, NBC will report that before the bullets stop flying!! The LEGITIMATE use of a firearm will SELDOM see the light of day.
However, I don't know about you, but when I'm in a situation where the lead is flying (Nam back in the day, and the ME every so often now), while I'm scurrying for cover, I DO account for co-workers and will get them if they need help.
As a parent, or just an adult, I'm sorry, I can't grasp the concept of ANY adult, ESPECIALLY a family member running for cover and not scooping up a CHILD along the way or if necessary turning and just dropping on a child to provide cover. Maybe that's just me, but damn, what "parent" wouldn't do that?

Once a guy pulled out a gun on me and my first reaction was to fight with him and I stupidly did and lucky to be alive, I should have just given him my money. The average person doesn't know how to react and haven't been in those situations like you have.
That being said, he will get a fair trial and sent to prison and when he get's out he will be an adult criminal and continue his meaningless life of crime, I only wish that he could be shipped to a Devils Island or something where he can really pay for the crime of shooting a 5 year old girl.

I'm not a "trained soldier"... I did my two years with our uncle. As for time in the ME, I manage construction projects... I'm NOT an operator.
But regardless of actual situation.... gun fire, building fire, automobile accident, the FIRST thing I do, even before worrying about ME is look at/for my son, and now my grandchildren, then the wife and other adults....
