Divers, cadaver dogs search for missing Colorado teen

Updated at 11:11 a.m. ET -- A dive team from the New Mexico State Police was resuming its search near the dam at Vallecito Reservoir on Monday for Dylan Redwine, a 13-year-old boy who disappeared from his father's home during a court-ordered visitation over Thanksgiving in southwestern Colorado.

According to The Durango Herald, the divers began the search Sunday in an area that cadaver dogs had flagged Saturday while aboard watercraft.

No remains had been found by Monday morning.

Cadaver dogs and patrols were also going out around the 12 miles of shoreline, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Dan Bender told NBC News on Monday.

"It's been devastating for the family," Bender said.

Dylan was reported missing on Nov. 19 by his father, Mark, who said he left the house in Vallecito, La Plata County, about 7:30 a.m. and returned a few hours later to find his son gone.

Dylan was described as 5 feet tall, 105 pounds, blond hair, blue eyes with a fair complexion. He was last seen wearing a blue and white Duke Blue Devils baseball cap, a black Nike T-shirt, black basketball shorts, black Jordan tennis shoes and a black backpack.

On Saturday, about 200 volunteers and law enforcement officials went door to door in the region and searched hills near Vallecito Lake, the Denver Post said.

"Every time someone sees a young male child with light hair or with a black backpack we're getting calls," Bender said, adding that there had been no confirmed sightings of Dylan.

The Herald said police are also looking to speak with two boys who were seen by a postal worker on Nov. 19 at the Vallecito Lake Country Market, according to Bender.

The postal worker, who knows Dylan, said one of the boys looked like him, adding that both teens were also wearing black backpacks. As of Monday morning, Bender said police had not heard from the two boys.

According to a news release, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is “working with local representatives of the FBI to share information and resources as they continue to develop leads on where Dylan may be," The Herald reported.

“Scenarios from abduction to runaway are being examined,” the release said. “Without any new clues, we have to continue to consider any and all possibilities." The FBI has not officially taken over the investigation, Bender told NBC News.

Dylan, his mother and his brother had moved to Colorado Springs this summer, NBC station KUSA of Denver reported.

Vallecito is more than 7,000 feet above sea level in the middle of rugged terrain. The weather in the area in the past few days has been clear and cool, with highs in the 50s and lows below freezing.

Anyone with information on Dylan's whereabouts is asked to contact La Plata County Sheriff's Office investigators at 970-382-7015 or 970-382-7045.

Daddy Mark just cut his child support payments in half. Happens all the time, and happens for that very reason.

Oh sure, it's true - he might have run away. Which brings up another interesting point: What do you suppose could motivate a 13-year-old child to attempt to escape his father? What..... do you....suppose.....happened? It's not as if the child had a choice, he was forced, by a court of law, to go to his father's home. He had no choice, his back was up against the wall and he was made by the courts to do that which he did not want to do.

Now he's missing. Well, well, well.

Either he's been killed by his father during a fit of rage or he's run away from his father to escape that fit of rage.

I guess we'll know if we find him alive, and we'll never know if we don't.

Liza - That's a whole lot of assuming going on there. Not saying you're wrong but why jump to conclusions with so little to go on? Not hiding in your attic is he?

Maybe Dad required civil, social behavior and was attempting to prepare the lad for life as a viable, civil law-abiding adult.

But, maybe not.

I fear females fail often when it comes to raising boys into MEN.

Of course, USA society as a whole is, in my Disgruntled Old Coot Opinion, actively engaged in a War Against Males and that the future may be best for males trained/raised by females to be obedient, place, emotion-laden caricatures of what males are in a society where females require defending from the many dangers facing all of us in life.

Meanwhile... where are the dames demanding the "right" males have of being required by law to sign up with Selective Service at age 18 or face numerous punishments?

"Liza - That's a whole lot of assuming going on there. Not saying you're wrong but why jump to conclusions with so little to go on? Not hiding in your attic is he?"

I believe little Liza is typical of the female-type infesting USA society nowadays.

Obbop - Careful, your inner misogynist is showing. I know lots of dads who are remiss when it comes to raising polite, respectful kids. In fact, I've seen plenty encouraging yahoo behavior instead of reprimanding their children.

Obbop: QUESTION: If you have it so bad as a male in today's society--would you turn female if given the chance?

If not--I rest my case!

Of course the Bad Dad did it. Everyone knows the Bad Dad did it. The Bad Dads always do this. He had every motivation too. Child support, alimony, forced visitations to reduce child support that interefere with his bachelor life now that the mother is dumped out of the marriage. Just one more loose end to take care of on he road to bachelor freedom.

I hope the boy is alive and well. I hope he's either found soon or calls his mom to tell her he's OK.

The only people who really know the family dynamic are the boy's parents and brother. As to whether he ran away or was abducted, or whether his father did him harm... their knowledge of the relationship the boy had with his dad seems to be a crucial factor in helping to determine what happened.

And what about the ramifications of the divorce? Was it acrimonious? Was the dad physically abusive? I hope the police are up to the task of digging into all of that before it's too late, if it isn't already.

Sorry to disappoint but facts don't lie.

According to the FBI, family annhilators are twice as likely to be the male than the female parent. It's true, mothers do kill their children, but fathers are twice as likely to do so, and even more likely to kill more than one child, as well as the other parent.

And, let's not forget another FACT: La Plata Sheriff and law enforcement authorities DO NOT BELIEVE that Dylan ran away.

If he didn't run away, then who took him out of his father's house? Is his father allowing people in the home who cannot be trusted around 13-year-old boys?

This country has a serious obsession with "designer" labels.

I really think the 'designer' labels are mentioned as it would help to identify. Jeez.

I'm still curious why there has been no reports that dad's home/vehicle have not been searched. Why no cell phone record search as it was reported that Dylan's cell phone and charger are missing. Why not since dad was the last person to see Dylan at his home and in most cases that is the #1 person of interest until ruled out and no mention of that either. No probable cause to search? Nor do any reports state where dad last saw Dylan-in bed, etc. before he left to go on his *errands* at 7:30am. No, time is being spent looking for him in LAKES. So what does that tell us? That Dylan is a run-away and most likely met up with foul play. And...........if Dylan is found in a lake, then will dad get serious interrogation? IMO I do not believe Dylan will be found anytime soon and IMO I don't believe he is a run-away.

I pray for the safe return of young Dylan. The weather down in the Durango area is very, very cold and that alone could end his innocent life. More importantly, I truly hope his parents had nothing to do with his disappearence.

Wow. So we have two women who think the dad killed the kid because that's what men do and one "person" who is more worried about the labels in the kids clothes than for the kid's life. Doesn't it just bring a tear to you eye and make you proud to be an American?

So much heartbreak in this tragedy. I realize that the boy may be a runaway, but it is very difficult (for me) to comprehend that a ten year old would attempt to do that. However, I do not know the entire situation, and therefore any ideas that I have would be meaningless speculation, at this point.

Recently, a young girl went missing in Colorado, and I was very hopeful that she would be found safe, and returned to her home. Tragedy struck there also, as she was found, dead and dismembered. And, as one result, such vicious crimes of that nature only reinforce negativity.

I will not weigh in on those who did, or those who did not. I will not lament the condition of the status quo, nor will I criticize the current law enforcement procedures while endeavoring to find this little boy.

May young Dylan be safe, and far away from any harm. My deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and loved ones. Above all else, may Dylan find his way back to us all, and his home.

I'm hoping that this is a simple case of a runaway and that no harm comes to him.At 13 he should have a say in the matter of visiting his Dad.It seems that Dad could have taken him on errands so that they could have spent quality time together.

      1. Sometimes visitation is court-ordered not because the child does not want to see a parent, but because the custodial parent is unreasonable and/or trying to prevent visitation as a way of retaliation or punishment for a relationship ending. Court-ordered visitation can be in place to protect and monitor each parent's rights. It doesn't necessarily mean a child doesn't want to be with a parent.
      2. 13 year old boys are not necessarily angels. There could be a dozen reasons why the boy chose to leave the home after his dad left. Ranging from trying to get away with something to simply goofing off. Many children find themselves in danger after thinking something sounded like a good idea.
      3. Katy Katy and Liza Null - How dare you accuse a parent without sufficient cause or evidence. Our country is based on innocent until proven guilty and you have no idea what the police know and aren't releasing or what has evolved from speaking to the dad. Until you have been invited by the police or FBI to share in the investigation, keep your traps shut. This is already a devastating time for the parents without accusers like you running your mouths. I pray they find this boy alive and well, perhaps just hurt in a rugged area and you can have crow for breakfast.

Reports are now in and investigators now DO NOT believe Dylan is a runaway and are asking the public for help during the time frame dad first picked up Dylan-if anyone has videos, etc along the route dad was taking. (AND IT WAS ALWAYS MY OPINION THAT DYLAN WAS NOT A RUN-AWAY). Dad also claimed in reports read that Dylan was sleeping when he left to run his *errands* and could not wake him up because *he was out like lights.* It is also reported that dad knew that Dylan was supposed to meet up with a friend Sunday evening, changed it to 6:30am Monday morning and dad questioned that but stated *nothing was set in stone.* They also did check out the cell phone records and no calls made on Monday the 19th. I merely questioned why the cell phone records were not searched immediately. Today investigators are FINALLY searching dad's home and I questioned why that search was not done IMMEDIATELY because the last person to see a missing person is always considered a person of interest but the focus from the start was that Dylan is a run-away. So, lampwicked, the investigators are NOW saying Dylan is NOT a run-away, (and it is you that CLAIM that Dylan chose to *leave the home to simply goofing off) they have searched Dylan's cell phone records, are asking those who traveled the vicinity of dad's route from Nov 18 to Nov 19, and are now searching dad's home and property. So, EVERYTHING I mentioned in my critical thinking skills is now taking form. That doesn't mean that investigator's are SAYING dad is a suspect and they may never find anything that points to him being a suspect only that they are searching dad's home and property NOW. Dad is shying away from the media because he doesn't want to take the chance of mixing up his comments and being scrutinized for inconsistent *stories.* It is my opinion and instincts that the ONLY person who knows where Dylan is and that is dad and I have questioned from the beginning why the home was not searched the day Dylan was reported missing. Did you know that clothing had to be brought in-possibly by mom (the article I read did not say from whom ) for search dogs to identify his scent? Not sheets that Dylan slept on, not clothing in dad's home, NOTHING from dad's home belonging to Dylan. Because maybe Dylan NEVER arrived to dad's home? AND LAMPWICKED: how DARE you accuse Dylan with running away from home without sufficient cause or evidence especially since investigator's have now determined that he did NOT run away..............and why do you suppose they have come to that conclusion???? Because Dylan is NOT a run-away and out and about *goofing off* like you claim.

Mark's comment: *I want everyone to know how much I love that boy and how much I CARED about him..............* *He WAS such a wonderful boy.................* Why is dad using PAST TENSE? Does he know something no one else does? Critical thinking: such a burden.

Just like that wack-job in Utah that killed his wife when she found out he wasn't really enrolled in school and they were about to move halfway across the country so he could attend a school he hadn't even been accepted at, so he killed her. Mark what's-his-name. Stood right there in front of cameras and talked about how his wife "was". As in, "used to be". As in, "before I strangled her and dumped her like she was just garbage".

"Was". Not "Is". "Was". Dylan "was" a good boy. And his dad said so, using those very words.

Antwaun Bailey of Spartanburg, S.C. is also missing. I just wonder why the cadaver dogs aren't out looking for him as well. Maybe the name has something to do with it. Hmmmmmmmm? Antwaun has been missing since November 22, 2012. I am sure his family would love the media attention, police assistance and cadaver dogs. But, that just doesn't happen like it should. Hope little Dylan is found safe and sound, as well as, Antwaun Bailey.
