Skinned animals found in Pennsylvania believed to be foxes, not puppies

Updated at 10:10 p.m. ET: A necropsy indicates that the carcasses of animals dumped near a public park were those of adult foxes, not puppies.

DNA testing to confirm the species will take several weeks, but the eye sockets and teeth suggest they are adult foxes, humane society shelter manager Cary Moran said late Monday afternoon.

Fox hunting is legal in Pennsylvania from October through February, according to the state game commission website.

Animal welfare investigators had sought clues in the skinning of 11 animals they believed were puppies -- their bodies were found stuffed in a bag left in a ditch in eastern Pennsylvania.

The gruesome discovery was made on Friday in Lower Macungie, about 20 miles from Lynn Township, where days earlier another animal carcass was found skinned and cooked, with its feet cut off, said Bruce Fritch, board president of the Lehigh County Humane Society, which is investigating the slayings.

"It's just heinous," Fritch said.

A black plastic sack containing the skinless puppy bodies was found by a woman walking her dog near a park in Lower Macungie.

The bodies were taken to a veterinary hospital, where experts attempted to determine the cause of death, he said.

Two pairs of thin latex gloves were found beside the animal and will be sent to a forensics lab.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

What absolutely sick monsters would do such incredible things to helpless baby animals? I hope they end up meeting with the swift justice they deserve before they end up harming more animals or even children. As it is so often the case, those people who harm or torture animals end up going on to harming humans later.Simply horrible someone can do this kind of stuff!

Absolutely horrific.

Like the one poster said below, it might be wise to look into customs of individuals in the area.

Z:

This wouldn't be a case of ethnic customs.

First off, dogs are falling out of favor in Asian countries. I'm Asian and I have never, ever, met anyone from an Asian country who has eaten it or would consider it.

Two--dogs who are raised for meat in Asian countries would be allowed to grow larger and get bigger. No one would simply skin puppies and leave the carcasses. Unless you're Cruella DeVille.

It was a psychopath on the way to being a serial killer who did this, most likely young, and it will only be a matter of time before he (statistically most serial killers are males) graduates to humans.

Catch him. Fast. He IS going to kill again.

Great Blessed Goddess, people, what IS it with you?

Why on Earth does everything have to be about race, party, or politics?

Can we all not find it in ourselves to be apalled at this waste of life, horrified at the callous brutality of the act (I hope the puppies were dead when they were skined, dear Goddess, what an absolutely sickening thought) and hope in our hearts that the person who did this is found and gets either mental help or jail time before they have a chance to escalate from animals to humans? If someone would do this to helpless two-week old puppies, what do you think this person would think of to do to a helpless child?

It's not about race, party, politics, or ethnic customs. This is one really mentally sick individual who desperately needs help...and a society that will have to watch their children and their pets carefully until the person is caught.

Have any children disappeared from that part of Pennsylvania lately?

This insane person will sink deeper into his downward spiral from being sociopathic, graduating to a full serial killer. It's Bad when Society does not know where they are to stop them, incarcerate them and eventually treat them; IF they can respond to Therapy. It IS the work of a monster, a very dangerous monster.

Another case of the news media stirring things up before all the facts are known. How many of the above comments would be here now that the article has been updated. It now is fairly obvious a hunter didn't do a very good job of disposing of nasty remains of his legal obtained kills.

I am gratified that so many people are upset by this story. Since all of you are vegan there is hope for the world's animals.

Oh - wait - you protesters aren't all vegans? Well at least vegetarian then? No? Well then why are you commenting? If you consume commercial meat products, leather shoes, bar soap, school glue then you are standing on thin ice.

Yes, thin ice. Before you criticize better get your own house in order.

BTW I NEVER condone animal cruelty. Humane, stress-less, respectable treatment is the ONLY way to go when dealing with fellow beings on this planet. Period. That is how I work it. You're all free to choose your own way of course.

How many pets are destroyed in this country simply because no one wants them? If someone wants to eat 'em, they won't end up in the shelter. I don't see the problem.

No one ate the puppies. They were skinned only for whatever reason unknown. We don't know if this was someone looking to make something for themselves or this was done for sh*ts and giggles or even someone who is starting to show signs of being a danger to the community. Either way, it's still sick because most people in this country see dogs as companions. If you go to China, this wouldn't be a problem due to their own culture. As for your statement about no one wanting pets, it's not a question of not wanting an animal, it's more of a problem of not being able to care for one when the means to do so are not available. That is where the problem lies.

      Cruella DeVille.

And no, even in China it would still be apalling. There's been a growing movement among the youth in Asian countries boycotting and protesting those who kill dogs for meat, and even among those who still cling to cultural traditions (like eating guinea pigs is in Brazil, or beef here in the US--in India, cows are sacred and our eating beef is disgusting to them) those who cling to cultural ctraditions would be apalled at the wastage.

        State of Awareness;

Yes, in many cases, it is about not wanting an animal. I'm a longtime volunteer at an inner-city animal shelter that gets about 15,000 animals a year. We not only take in the animals that Animal Enforcement Officers bring in, we take in people's surrendered pets.

Here's our 'Top Ten Reasons For An Owner-Surrender':

        1) I'm moving and I can't take it with me.

        2) Someone gave me this animal and I found out I'm allergic (or my kid is allergic.)

        3) A relative bought the dog for my kid and I don't want it.

        4) A relative moved and left the animal with me, said they would come and get it after they got settled, and never came back.

        5) My ex moved out and left the animal and I don't want it.

        6) My pet is getting old and I can't bear to watch him/her get old and die. Can I take a look at your kennels and see what you have? Do you have any puppies?

        7) My landlord won't allow me to have this breed.

        8) My parents died and made me promise to take care of their dog. I don't want it, you can have it.

        9) This animal is untrainable and I can't get it to do anything. I've tried everything. I want it euthanized because it's too stupid.

        10) My female got out of the yard and got herself pregnant. I don't want puppies.

We had one case where a pair of elderly parents had an older dog. The parents passed away, wrote in the will that whichever of their two children (one son, one daughter) would take the dog and care for it would inherit the estate. The son showed up at the lawyer's, signed the papers, took the dog and the money, then dumped the dog off at the shelter to be euthanized. The lawyer suspected that something like that would happen, showed up at the shelter, and adopted the dog before he could be euthanized.

Fortunately for the perp, this country is civilized enough that it doesn't actively practice an, "eye-for-an-eye," in its judiciary system. But if he was caught doing this in a third-world country ...would someone make a skin-tight body suit out of his hide?

He better pray he isn't caught. Can you imagine what convicts would do -- convicts that are fond of dogs for pets -- would do to him in the prison yard?

An update to this news is that the animals were foxes, not dogs. This potentially changes the motive; possibly for use of the fur. Regardless, it is a gruesome and disturbing find, but not necessarily a budding serial killer.

Sorry, Jim, I can't agree with that thought...There is a mighty thin line between the 'sickness' of a person that would skin puppies, and one that would skin foxes. They would have had to be quite young foxes to be considered 'puppy size', anyway; one action is as sick as the other. Who's to say that a "budding serial killer" isn't encouraged by skinning young...mammal...anything?

                Reply#8 - Mon Nov 26, 2012 7:00 PM EST

Really? The difference is in how the animal is killed. If an animal is, let's say shot with a high-powered rifle, and the shot is properly placed (as all shots should be), then the animal is near instantly in shock and dies relatively swiftly. If said animal is being killed to provide sustenance, then it should be killed "humanely," which means quickly, efficiently, and with the infliction of as little pain is is humanly possible. The same could be said for slitting an animals throat, as is frequently done at slaughter. Torturing an animal for pleasure is a whole different ball game, and the very fact that you felt the need to pose this questions shows your lack of empathy, and potentially points to you as a borderline (without further evidence, one cannot make a stronger assertion, though I may wish to do so) sociopath. Killing for pleasure is a different function than killing to feed oneself or one's family.

As a lifelong vegetarian I find the concept of eating non-human animals as grossly uncivilized. But then, self-serving logic creeps in where some animals are bred for consumption, they don't feel pain (unless they are your pets), they deserve to be eaten, we are top of the food chain etc. etc.

There is little difference in killing animals for pleasure and killing for consumption, everything else is logic to make yourself feel better amount inhumane practice.

The concept of eating humans is considered 'barbaric', a practice that was common in some tribes. In due time, the concept of eating animals will be considered 'barbaric', compassion is the inevitably of evolution. Some will realize sooner than later.

Just look at the last 100 years and figure out how many common practices are now considered 'uncivilized', why not 'animal-eating'. You do it because your parents did it, and you friends did it, just like all crappy practices of the past 100 years.

An unexamined life is a sad thing.

These animals were NOT killed for food; it is called reading comprehension people, try it! They were skinned carcasses, not completely defleshed. In other words, they had their "meat" on them still. This was patently an act of unspeakable cruelty, not related to the need to eat. Those posters using this as an opportunity to bring politics into the matter, are not only ill-informed, but also lack the ability to carefully read and understand even a short, simply news story.

Regarding the single animal that was discovered skinned and cooked, the article does not say it was eaten, simply that it was cooked. It may have been this sick bastards way of further torturing the helpless animal.

Chinese manufacturers have been involved in some very inhumane conduct and egregious import violations concerning kitten and puppy gift figures made with real kitten and puppy fur. My money is on finding a local Chinese sweat shop that is now trying to produce these souvenirs in this country to avoid the international customs and tariff issues.

You might read that a cat toyed with a bird until it was dead, then left it uneaten and went into the house to eat some Little Friskies. Animals behave in ruthless ways every day.

If you really believe that humans are the worst thing out there, you need to meet more humane humans.

There was a time in our History were some 'people' were bred for 'slavery' and it was ok. I guess, in due time, dogs and pigs will have similar rights, until then all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Hanging, drawing and quartering is the only punishment acceptable for the maggot turd(s) that did this......

This wasn't done for food, how much meat can a two week old puppy have? This is just a sick, sick person who won't get much in the way of punishment even if caught.

Yet another good reason for the death penalty. The scum that did this isn't worth one puppy life.

Hopefully the jerk that did this has his little member skinned and shoved down his throat in prison. Only excuse for anyone to get a gun is to revenge the death of these little babies. Sickening.

I just hope they were dead before they were skinned. This is so sick.

I just watched a video on MSNBC of Cops shoot a dog and claiming," The PIT BULL was acting aggressive and the cop was afraid it would get loose."

WHAT A BUNCH OF CRAP!!!! In the first place the dog WAS NOT a pit bull. Secondly, they had tased the dog and scared the hell out of it and lastly the dog had been collared with an animal control/capture pole.

This cop needs to be fired, fined and sued by the owners for burial of the dog, the cost of a new dog plus pain and suffering!

The cops in the video are apparently willing to lie about anything rather than admit they SCREWED UP BIG TIME !!!!

I have been training dogs since 1978. I believe I have enough experience to be believed!

That was an outrage, no doubt about it. If anyone ever shoots my dog because it "might" get loose, they'll pay for it when I get loose.

I would gladly pull the firing squad trigger to blow this stupid son-of-a-bitches head clean off his shoulders. I don't care what the reasoning or culture is. THIS is the US - and we don't skin puppies.
