One man was killed and a second man was in critical condition after a shooting Monday at the funeral of a known gang member.
Mary Sistrunk said her son, 21-year-old Sherman Miller, was killed in the shooting inside St. Columbanus Church.
Another man, 26-year-old, Deonte Ousley, was rushed to surgery in critical condition.
Police said both Miller and Ousley are "convicted felons and had a gang affiliation."
Sistrunk said she lost another son in a similar incident about four years ago and said she told Miller he needed to "let go of those people and get with God."

The funeral, in the 300 block of East 71st Street, was for James Holman, who was shot and killed a week ago at 60th and Michigan. Gunfire reportedly broke out in the vestibule of the church as the funeral ended.
Eyewitness April Smith said she saw a man approach the church from 72nd and Prairie, then walk inside and start shooting. She heard at least 10 shots before seeing the man run out, drop the gun and take off, she said.
"This has to stop. If it's happening at funerals, it's going to continue to happen," she said.
Pastor Corey Brooks tweeted that gunfire broke out after he preached a funeral there.
"Please pray I believe people have been hit it is Chaos about 500 people here. This is Crazy!!" he tweeted.
"Two people shot and it appears that one is dead and one critical," he tweeted. "Please pray for Chicago. This is Horrible!!
Police could not confirm Brooks' description of the scene.
Brooks on Sunday said he is considering a bid for former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s vacated congressional seat in the 2nd District. Brooks became known as the "rooftop pastor" after holding a vigil atop a Super Motel to draw attention to Chicago violence.
Four people were killed and 20 were injured in shootings over the long holiday weekend.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Monday the police department's strategy to curb gang violence is working and the number of murders after May 1 has decreased year over year.
"I can't change what happened in the first quarter," McCarthy told reporters. "What I can do is fix it moving forward."

The story will be covered in hopes that it boosts support for gun control. Nevermind that Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country and the violence is still out of control. They won't look at it as gun control laws don't stop violence...they view it as "well, that's just proof that there isn't ENOUGH gun control".
You realize Obama has as much to do with crime in Chicago as Bush II has to do with illegal immigration in Texas - and violent crime there? Nothing!

Instead of leading off with a persons arrest record or what they were convicted of why dont you report on the most ridiculous part of this story. The fact that someone shot two people during a funeral. This is more of the minimalizing that goes on when politicians dont want to admit that their town is out of control.
I believe that if the students in Chicago were literate to grade level, they could think up alternatives to gang violence themselves. Obviously the leadership of the gangs themselves have failed them, as have their educators, their religious leaders, and local politicians. The system of retaining teachers who are unqualified with tenure and union support has failed these students. The democratic process of having a district vote for the likes of a non functioning representative like Jesse Jackson Jr., has failed these students. Public housing tracts of land have failed these students. It can't hurt, at this stage to teach them some math and science, technical skills, literacy in language, writing and the arts. Just because their leadership examples are boneheads who don't want to be surpassed, doesn't mean these kids should be denied through education, the opportunity to do so.

Earlier this year there were 2 murdered at a funeral in ATL. The 2 that died shot each other. One thug saw the other thug and both pulled illegally obtain and possessed guns and fired multiple times. Both of their last shots hit their mark. At least thats two thugs that our tax dollars won't have to support anymore.

It is a little ironic that you make that statement on an article about a shooting in Chicago, the largest city in the ONLY state that does not have some sort of concealed carry. Look at one of Chicago's close neighbors, like Indianapolis. Indiana has a very high rate of firearm ownership, and a very high rate of carry licenses. Indiana is also the only state to issue "lifetime" carry licenses. Yet, Indianapolis does not suffer from the same major crime problems or gang problems that Chicago does. The two cities are not even 200 miles apart, and yet they have two very, very different crime rates.
You are entitled to your beliefs, but stating that more guns equals more crime is a falsehood.

And as an aside, Why does it seem that every victim or family member interviewed shows up as, Mom( Sue jones) talking about her son, (Joe Smith).. And even when by miracle a father is also interviewed, he is (Tom Doe). I can't remember the last time i saw an interview where Mom (Sue Jones), talks about her son (Joe Jones), while standing next to her husband and father of the child, (Tom Jones). Just more of snapshot as to the degradation of Family and Family values. Now you have a Mom, Child and husband and none of them have the same name... Failure....

These gangs are nothing but home-grown terrorists involved in a nationwide conspiracy of drug and weapons trafficking, sanctioned murder, robbery, rape, kidnapping, and every other violent dedestructive vice known. They are predators, a scourge among us and won't be stopped until the people who personally witness their filth are ready to say "NO MORE!" and tell exactly who and what they saw. Gang banning needs to be a FEDERAL crime with federal time. That includes incarceration hundreds or thousands of miles from home, no contact visits, no free college, no weight rooms, no "recreation", and best of all, NO PAROLE. The local police can't stop this any more than they could 50 years ago with the Mafia. Because this has once again become an interstate crime, it needs to be handled on a national level. Until then, the body count will just keep rising, with innocent civilians either victims of the gang-bangers violence or literally being hostages in their own homes because of their fear of the non-stop violence happening in their front yards.

Shootings at a funeral are definitely an all time low in gang thug-like behavior. I cannot understand this level of moral decay in our country - people who show each other and their families little to no respect. Apparently our society has been infected with numerous sociopaths; the only solution to this problem is complete eradication of this societal cancer. My questions are: Who are these guys mothers? And for those mothers: THIS is how you raised your kid? To be a murdering thug? Sad.
Maybe the parents should go to jail along with their kids over their kids behavior (the age of the "kid" is irrelevant). That should be a sufficient deterrent to get the parents to either raise their kids right or not have them in the first place. This murdering, gang behavior is ridiculous and inexcusable.

I know you said people are wrong to bring race into this, but a couple months ago the NY Times ran a story that stated 73% of black children are now born into single-parent homes. Next highest was Latino with whites and Asians falling on the other end of the spectrum. Guess which demographics suffer the most from high crime rates, low education, drug abuse, etc?

you have it right, we are a society of sociopaths, many of them. How do you make a sociopath....well, it can take one rape to make a girl a sociopath...that's one example of how easy it is. Borderline Personality Disorder is much the same, they are not genetic, it is environmental...these kids are being lead by adults who are playing the pipe, much like a child in Gaza or Israel....all they know is how to adapt to what their environment is....the kids in my family had the recipe for gang members, but we were a mother away from becoming one. The only ingredient in my family to keep this from happening was my mom, the house mom, who was always home for us, who still has not worked a single job in society, who has been cast out of society for not working her whole life for someone else...if it was not for her self sacrifice...I would be a stripper or worse. Sad she couldn't make a retirement fund for herself by keeping her kids inline. ...just to watch her husband go off to some chick half his age....family is the issue in this country...we flee our own families because our friends are way more FUN and controversial.

The Godfather was a made up story. This is real life. While these things did actually happen with the Mob, it was in a dark time of this country's history. Prohibition should never have happened, but then we wouldn't have NASCAR without it. I guess things happen for a reason. I just don't know for what reason there are so many gangs these days. Maybe the US will legalize drugs, and the gangs will go legal and build multi-billion dollar legal Corporations.

Can you think of an EASIER way for politicians to do something? It's always easier to say something such as "I know that only a few of you in this class/group/society that are causing a problem; but I'm going to make ALL of you pay". It's much harder to make those responsible for these acts, the target and SOLE target. But if government doesn't do just that then it will only become worse.

Another thing Voxrationis, there are more guns per person in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho than there is in Chicago and they don't have black on black violence so following your twisted logic it would be the more blacks there are the more crime there is. Sorry Vox, but the facts don't support your claims: according to the FBI, 99.7% of those guns were obtained illegally.
It is horrible to see these young kids being killed. They could do more and be more. It is also frustrating because taxpayers get increased taxes for increased police force. Hospitals eat the bills for all this violence. Lawmakers make the strictest gun laws that dont seem to apply to gangs. Communities continue to blame the govenor/mayor/alderman for all this. Until the parents decide to be parents to their children nothing will change. The people need take back their communities and be part of the solution and not the problem. It seems everyone is paying but parents have to have more personal responsibility and accountability for these children.
It is terrible in Chi Town. These kids could be more and do more!! It is all very frustrating too. The taxpayers pay because of increased police force. The hospitals/taxpayers pay buy eating all the bills for this violence. The lawmakers are blamed for every death in the city related to gangs. The reality is until the parents want to be parents and have responsibility and accountability of their children, nothing will change. The communities need to step up and take back their communities. This whole "no snitching" is crap. I understand the fear some may have but until the communities start talking and speaking up about what they saw or what they know regarding violence, nothing will change.

First, and least important, you seem to assume that the people who call them out for being there and for not being there are the same people. Second, and more important, is your assumption that calling them out for their behavior is automatically an indication of hatred. Not so. You have to respect someone to hate them.
I think the people who call those guys out when they show up, only do so because the only time they show up is to incite racism.
Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson rarely show up when there is black-on-black crime but they were there in a day when George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin.

Even though deadly violence is not good in most all scenarios, at least back in the days, it was usually over a specific reason that was business related and was pre-orchestrated, for the most part. How about concentrating on the problematic individuals of the black, "gangsta", shoot-'em-up mentality today instead of attempting to draw attention off of and slyly slip in focus the actions of suited up, white men from almost a century ago. The only way I could see a logical connection between the prohibition era mobsters(Capone and such) and the modern day 'gangsta' is if the gang problem has spread within the white community during the prohibition the way it has taken over the black community.
The fact is that Capone and such were derelects, but were an 'exception', not the accepted aspiration for the majority.
The African American community really does need to stop trying to deflect the truths about the failures within their own community. Sure, I understand there is a need for self-esteem and pride within this community. However, the only way to obtain pride and self-esteem is through actual accomplishment. Perhaps the accomplishment should be working hard to assure that the next generation doesn't make the mistakes of those past. Perhaps it will be having a generation of Black women that insist on condom use or even take advantage of the free birth control at their local health clinic. With the free time of not having kids early or out of wedlock, perhaps an entire generation could take advantage of the numerous grants and such to get through tech, community college or university. Then, once you have a generation of educated, accomplished and successful Black women and men, then you can pair up and start a family, passing on the values you have created with the example you set.
With a few generations of this a dramatic change will happen in your community. But, a few more generations of accepting failure and mediocrity as the norm and spending your time trying to reflect the blame will only make your situation worse.
There are violent gangs in hispanic communities asian communties and white communities we like to call white gang members mobsters as if they are any better so gang violence is a reality of america not just in the black community
