One man was killed and a second man was in critical condition after a shooting Monday at the funeral of a known gang member.
Mary Sistrunk said her son, 21-year-old Sherman Miller, was killed in the shooting inside St. Columbanus Church.
Another man, 26-year-old, Deonte Ousley, was rushed to surgery in critical condition.
Police said both Miller and Ousley are "convicted felons and had a gang affiliation."
Sistrunk said she lost another son in a similar incident about four years ago and said she told Miller he needed to "let go of those people and get with God."

The funeral, in the 300 block of East 71st Street, was for James Holman, who was shot and killed a week ago at 60th and Michigan. Gunfire reportedly broke out in the vestibule of the church as the funeral ended.
Eyewitness April Smith said she saw a man approach the church from 72nd and Prairie, then walk inside and start shooting. She heard at least 10 shots before seeing the man run out, drop the gun and take off, she said.
"This has to stop. If it's happening at funerals, it's going to continue to happen," she said.
Pastor Corey Brooks tweeted that gunfire broke out after he preached a funeral there.
"Please pray I believe people have been hit it is Chaos about 500 people here. This is Crazy!!" he tweeted.
"Two people shot and it appears that one is dead and one critical," he tweeted. "Please pray for Chicago. This is Horrible!!
Police could not confirm Brooks' description of the scene.
Brooks on Sunday said he is considering a bid for former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.'s vacated congressional seat in the 2nd District. Brooks became known as the "rooftop pastor" after holding a vigil atop a Super Motel to draw attention to Chicago violence.
Four people were killed and 20 were injured in shootings over the long holiday weekend.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Monday the police department's strategy to curb gang violence is working and the number of murders after May 1 has decreased year over year.
"I can't change what happened in the first quarter," McCarthy told reporters. "What I can do is fix it moving forward."

I can't stand gang members. What I don't understand is when something like this happens, it's a tragedy. You want to live the 'thug' life style? Well, you're dead. Hope that life style was worth it. Not sure if it's lack of intelligence (doesn't take much!) to realize that if you're shooting at people, they will shoot back. It's no surprise that people get shot and die. It's not if, it's when.
This is not the fault of Obama, or Jesse Jackson, or police, or Mayor Emmanuel. Here is the root of the problem:
Young women and men have sex without protection.
Then the girls have a baby, or two, or three that they are not ready for, emotionally or financially. Those children grow up in a dangerous neighborhood. Why? Mom doesn't have the money to move them to a safer place. And because she has no money, there's no babysitter to supervise them after school. (Dad isn't around, because he wasn't ready for parenthood, either.)
So the kids run in the streets after school. And they get recruited by gang members. Or get shot. It's tragic, but it's completely predictable.
It's time to hold youths accountable for their behavior. Irresponsible pregnancy is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I don't care if you're poor, struggling, dealing with a bad school, whatever. There is no reason to have sex without protection. That is a CHOICE you make, and it's a bad one.
The pastors, youth leaders, counselors, etc., in this community, need to tell these kids that they should be ASHAMED of themselves for making that choice. And that they are WELL ABLE to make better choices.
I'm a Democrat, by the way. Voted for Obama. But I agree with conservatives on this one. Until irreponsible pregnancy stops, little kids will grow up on the streets, and these gang problems will go on, and on, and on.

Excuse me! It seems that there are a lot of fools out there today. Gang violence is not just a "BLACK" thing. A good example is The Cicero Yards of the Burlington Northern RR. Whenever a train breaks down there you have to decide which side of the 4 main lines to walk down. On one side you have to speak bubonics and on the other you have to speak Spanish. The many gangs in Obamaland don't care if you are Black, White, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or half and half. If you don't sport the right ink you are fair game. You are the enemy. You are prey not the predator. Like all predators, they like the weak and harmless. Much easier snack than someone who could be armed and dangerous. This crap is the responsibility and shame of the Chicago Police Dept. and the Cooks County Sheriffs department. I won't put the Illinois State Police in that category of shame. The ISP are a great group of men and women. The problem is inside the City they have to coordinate with the corrupt and pittiful Chicago Police. Nothing nicer than to tell someone that you are going in to bust a bunch of drug dealers only to have them know that you are coming!!

The law abiding citizens of Illinois must unite and force Our Illustrious Governor Quinn (READ THAT AS EXTREME SARCASM) to stop vetoing the state legislature on our gun rights. If the law abiding people in that church had concealed carry permits that scum bag would have never attempted to walk in brazenly and open fire. Nothing easier than unloading a gun on a bunch of unarmed Christians. If the Chicago Police department and the Cook County Sheriffs department cannot get better control then The State of Illinois needs to call out the National Guard and start taking names and kicking @sses. I'm not saying that Southern Illinois is without gangs and drug dealers. East St. louis and its surroundings are a good example. Mainly though, they try to keep it indoors. Mt Vernon Illinois is known as a drug distribution center for Southern Illinois. It's at the junction of I 57,the main north south interstate between New Orleans and Chicago and I64. I 64 runs from St. Louis to Norfolk Virginia. Very handy for any drug suppliers coming from the east coast or Florida. New Orleans has always been popular with smugglers. GO FIGURE!!
The difference between Chicago and Southern Illinois is that down here someone breaks into your home they can pretty much be guaranteed to be met by armed response! The State police work hand in hand with all local law enforcement with the knowledge that they have the respect and support of everyone down here. They pretty much don't have to worry about security when they speak of raids. Not in Chicago. Drug dealers and whores cannot stand on a street corner and pedle their wares. They could try. It wouldn't last long. Someone would drop a dime on them and then sit back and enjoy the show.

I went back and reread the article. Did not find any mention of the victims race or color. What did I miss? Someone always turns everything into a racial issue. This is a sad commentary on society today, period.

The death of the African
American in America, extremely violent.
This is just the
beginning,and that is the most unfortunate situation specially in African
American communities. We have finally cause problems that the rest of the
American community will no ttolerate with. The African American community is
on their own. The crime rate in all major cities is exclusively caused by
African Americans. Statistics indicate that the average African American male
or female under the age of 30 is either unemployed on welfare or in jail. We
are killing each other stealing from each other wholesale. The white and
Hispanic community is no longer willing to trust or positively interact with
African Americans for any type of opportunity's that may be available. We as a
people are no longer trusted and not able to blame anyone, but ourselves for
our own irresponsible actions .
We are not taken the
opportunities that are readily available,instead these opportunities are being
taken by immigrants willing to work to make a better life for
themselves.

The reality is hopelessness and survival. Many of us see only the blood and death and fail to see the root causes behind it. We ask for it to stop..We pray for it to stop. We march for it to stop. But when we finish hoping and praying and marching the reality remains. A reality that those us that live outside these violent communities will never understand because we don't live there.

Does anyone else find it disturbing that the Pastor Brooks was tweeting about the chaos during the chaos? I find that completely inappropriate. He should have been concerned about the well being of the members of his congregation, not tweeting for publicity and potential political gain. The sanctity of a church is no longer existent.
