Neighbor arrested in murder of Arkansas girl found in chains

A neighbor has been arrested as a suspect in the killing of a 6-year-old Arkansas girl whose high-profile child abuse case last year sent her father and stepmother to prison, police said.

Jersey Bridgeman was reported missing the morning of Nov. 20. Minutes after a search for her began, Jersey's body was discovered in an abandoned house two doors from her home in Bentonville.

Zachary Holly, 28, who lives next door to where Jersey was staying, is being held in the Benton County Jail on charges of capital murder, kidnapping and residential burglary, police Chief Jon Simpson said Monday night.

Simpson said Holly will have a bail and probable cause hearing Wednesday, during which a probable cause affidavit will be released. At that point, "many questions related to this investigation and arrest will be answered," Simpson said.

He did not release details of how Jersey died or what led police to Holly. Simpson said work by the State Crime Lab helped speed the arrest.

Jersey's short life was checkered with discomfort. About a year before her death, her father and stepmother were charged with abuse after investigators discovered they had chained her to a dresser to stop her wandering around the house at night. David Bridgeman, Jersey's father, told investigators he restrained his daughter to prevent her from getting into medication and other things around the house.

David and Jana Bridgeman, Jersey's stepmother, pleaded guilty in June to false imprisonment, permitting abuse of a minor and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Jana Bridgeman is serving a 12-year prison sentence, plus three years for a probation revocation. David Bridgeman is serving an 18-year prison sentence.

Police Capt. Justin Thompson said there was "no reason ... for the community to be worried at this point," but otherwise revealed little more about the homicide investigation in Bentonville some 215 miles northwest of Little Rock.

Thompson said the girl died sometime between midnight and 6:53 a.m. on the day her body was found. He would not say who called 911 to report her missing. Investigators later searched the home where she lived and the house where her body was found, as well as the homes in between.

I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face for this little girl. All I am thinking is why her? She went from one bad thing to another and now death. She did not deserve this and she will never reach her full potential. I hope he meet his death in a timely manner. I hope the parents forever be haunted by the pain they cause this little girl. This is beyond sad.

How in the world could anyone abuse this little angel they way they did? Look at her picture and tell me how anyone could dare harm a single hair on her! I'm enraged by this! That poor child! It's stories like these that make me wish and think of the most horrible death we can ensue on the abuser(s). May your little soul shine bright in the heavans, making everyone smile from your beauty.

I know this is not the time, but this is one of the cases for abortion. This sweet little girl was born to animals not humans. She never had a good day in her short life. In fact she was abused from day one. Did these people have her just for that. Kinda like a dog, Something to kick when your drunk or pissed off. This pour sweet little thing would have better off to have never been born. Most people wouldn't treat a dog like this. RIP little one.

As a human being, I grieve for the loss of this precious little girl.

But because I'm a human being, I can feel nothing but rage for the "parents" and this neighbor. Young or not, the way these animals treated this precious girl was an abomination.

chuck-2111043, I won't get into the abortion issue...but I will say that my wife and I are the parents of an adopted girl, and I can assure you this little one could have--would have--found a loving home.

If these "parents" didn't want her, someone else would have...and considered themselves blessed for the opportunity to raise her as their own.

The world is a sadder place with the loss of one of it's little angels.

There are so many sources of blame here that it is just enraging to think of them. Coulda woulda shoulda often will apply to hind sight so well, but the fact is this little girl's whole world failed her.

Church, State, Courts, parents, extended family, neighbors, and community.

Let's hope that all of the aforementioned look at their abysmal failure here and make corrections. Perhaps some good can be salvaged out of something as tragic as this loss is.

Sure, there is a chance she would not have found a loving home if adopted...so some of you are you're saying she's better off dead/aborted? Unbelievable! I'm not against abortion but to use this opportunity to push your agenda surely does more harm than good to your cause.

It is a shame...she never had much of a chance with parents like those...

Also, I don't understand...if her dad and stepmom are in prision, who is she staying with? Did she go from being born to abuse parents to living in a different house that happened to be next door to a murderer?

I hope these folks are tortured daily in their souls for what they have done...but I doubt it.

BROOKE IN FT LAUDERDALE,

You're right. I made an assumption.

But I base that assumption on the adoptive families I've met and have come to know. I concede there are tragic cases where an adoptive family turns a child's life into as much of a nightmare as this little girl has seen.

But I'd still wager a year's salary that, if she had a different family, she probably wouldn't have been treated like she was...and that she'd be alive today.

Thank heavens, the odds are against this sort of thing happening when prospective families are properly screened.

Assuming the NASA scenario, if humans started harvesting and eating it, PETA would be wetting their pants. PETA considers chickens to be self-aware and capable of feeling pain - just not fetuses.

I'm sure that you can't follow that line of reasoning. It's too complex.

I don't have a problem with pregnancies that may threaten the life of the mother. Then the mother must make a choice.

all life has potential but most animals eat others so what makes one more special than another? "nothing"

so what makes being alive? being BORN,its just that simple.

Websters Dictionary used to define religion as a cult gathering, then they went PC and changed it.

Talk about narrow minds - some serious lumpage (lumping people into one or another group) going on in these posts.

How do people go from looking at people as individuals with varying ideas - to seeing everyone as one or the other? The idea of a balanced life, must really screw them up.

This is a sad story - but then humans have become wimps - you people shedding tears - you never would have survived 300 years or more ago. Living twice as long as 300 years ago - has slowed us down to the point where we no longer have to stay busy to survive, this extra time to dwell on everything, isn't to our benefit.

What do tell the 600 family's last year who lost their Mother, Wife, Sister or Daughter in child birth? In most of these cases an abortion would have saved the life of the mother.

Tell me would you not kill Jim Jones (Jonestown 1978) if you knew he was about to Kill 917 men, women, children and babies. Save 917 for 1 or let all 918 die. Sometimes someone must die to save others, its the way of the world.

You can take that from someone who has watched her stomach warp from a little life doing flips, kicking, and throwing her arms out twice over. My ribs are a good testament as well, having had to feel the sharp pains from all the jabs of a little foot right into them. And it was quite something to feel their hiccups all the time and watch their hearts beating on a monitor. I assure you, they were very much alive, and continued to be when they moved from inside my body to the outside world.

These women died because of some unforseen issue not because they were not allowed to have an abortion so your arguement is mute! To even be talking about abortion in reference to this child is so crazy. What is wrong with you people? This was a vibrante beautiful little girl that was abused by her parents and neighbor!!! How did the word "abortion" even come into play? It sounds super ignorant for anyone to say she would have been better off aborted! These PARENTS and NEIGHBOR would have been better off aborted!!!!!! Why didn't I hear anyone say that????? They are the scum! This child would be here if some people would do their job. Family members, neighbors, teachers and child protective services! I really would like to know why some of you guys seriously allowed yourselves to be trolled by an idiot on the abortion issue in an article that is about the loss of life of a six year old girl who died slowly and likely painfully.

Are you guys really that pathetic and shallow enough to sit and crap all over the memory of a little girl who died by sh*tting all over the article with your political views?

                    #1.52 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 9:53 PM EST

CaerRaven, with all due respect, it has nothing to do with being shallow when responding to someone that insists the same girl you speak of would have been better off aborted. That, in my opinion, is "crapping" all over her memory. In no way did she deserve to die in such a manner, and there are many people in the world who would have helped her experience a much better life than the one she lived had they ever been given the opportunity or had knowledge of her before.

                      #1.53 - Tue Nov 27, 2012 11:48 PM EST

No, you and several others acted infantile by continuing to respond to people who were obviously trolling to get a rise out of pro-lifers. Instead of letting it slide, several people turned it into a political Roe vs Wade argument instead of focusing on the fact a kid is dead. It cheapens the article and people should genuinely be ashamed of allowing themselves to stoop to such stupid levels.

I'm genuinely sorry for the kid at never having a chance. It's sad that something like this even had to happen and the people who did this need to die just as slowly and painfully as she did.

                        #1.54 - Wed Nov 28, 2012 6:25 AM EST

So COmommy...you would have subjected her to the live she lived if you only had that choice and abortion? Yes, it is a hypothetical question but that was the very point of the first person who made the statement. They merely pointed out these were parents that never should have been parents in the first place...and had they made that choice...either by keeping their pants on, sterilization, adoption, or abortion...this child would have never had to suffer. It was not a comment about the little girl but a comment about her parents or lack thereof...because those are the only kind of people that would ever do this to a child. A good parent would never abort a child let alone chain them to a dresser...because a good parent would be prepared to raise a child and do it properly. So many here not only added to the fire but completely missed the point. The value of life.

Better yet, where was god when this predator was being made and then born 28 years ago? No male suddenly kidnaps (and probably raped) then murders a kid. Cops might get a chance to now clear up some unsolved cold cases in that area, god willing. ;-)

For your information queenie, I am a Christian who believes marriage is a right open to anyone. After all, it isn't a Christian-only institution, and I don't think it's right we think we can corner the market on it. I think two men (or two women) together would have made a hell of a lot better parents than what this poor kid wound up with.

Littlechanges - FYI - God is right where He's always been by most people - ignored until something bad happens and then blamed for whatever it is. Most people don't want to do anything He says and then they act surprised when things are bad down here.

This little girl is with Him now. Her life was horrible but from now on it will be an amazing wonder for her. She won't be judged because she was innocent. The rest of us aren't so fortunate and we will be judged.

People think they get to sit in judgment of God. Not so. He is the only one who has the right to judge anyone. Everyone who He judges He first died in their place. Everyone who He condemns He first did everything possible to try to save them from themselves.

No one gets away with anything. The people who shoot into crowds and then shoot themselves, the molesters, the secret abusers, none of them will escape. God will bring them up in the end and judge them all.

But there is mercy if you want it. God is totally egalitarian, anyone who wants mercy can have it. But only on His terms. If you think you can accuse Him and demand answers from Him, good luck with that.

Do you know if this little girl did either of those things? If not my understanding is she is buring in hell for all eternity. So many technicalities in that there bible...

Steve - while you say no one gets away with anything and GOD will judge this bastard, you also say anyone who wants GOD's mercy can have it.

so do you think this guy will have his "coming to jesus" moment before he dies, and share heaven with the little girl he raped and killed?

it's entirely likely that he will...GOD is very forgiving, and as far as im aware there isnt a single crime or sin that blackballs your from heaven.

GOD is great, isnt he? even a rapist and killer can get a "get out of jail" free card if he believes hard enough.

as far as im aware, we are all born with sin - none of us are innocent.

but then, a christian can make it up as they go...when a child seems to survive something horrible, it's GOD's doing...when a child is raped and killed, GOD had nothing to do with it.

it's amazing how GOD picks and chooses...but then, doesnt actually...it's all so clear and complicated.

So, here we go again. People arguing about abortion and religion, instead of the critical topics at hand. The sad, tragic fact is, kids are being abused daily. Kids are being killed often. It is NOT a new phenomenon and we are NOT doing anywhere near enough to address the problem. We tell our children to avoid strangers, but for too many kids, the real danger is at home. When abuse has a "hook" to sell, it hits the headlines, but most child abuse doesn't get prime time in the media and continues to be ignored by most of the public. When it does hit the news, everyone blames the "system," the social workers, the police, the courts. Let's put the blame where it lies, on our society in general. WE are not doing enough.

Someone says she could have been adopted. Well, another harsh fact is that we do not have any where near sufficient adoptive homes. We don't even have enough foster homes. We are leaving children in homes we don't want to leave them in, because there is no place to put them and the few safe openings left are for the kids in the most immediate danger of death or severe bodily injury. No one feels good about it, but there simply are not enough resources. The family courts in just about every jurisdiction are bursting at the seams, with no end in sight.

No, this is nothing new and I realize with deep dread that it is not going to dramatically improve any time soon. Good people don't want to hear about anything so awful. Well, if you can't stand to hear it, think about the poor kids living it. Then we have people who complain, we're so liberal it's illegal to spank your kid so they are turning into thugs. Horse hockey. You can spank your child, you just can't leave bruises, welts, or marks. Children are not property. They have a right to physical safety.

Our system is overwhelmed. We don't have enough resources in any area for these kids. About 1/2 of the kids in the foster system will become homeless shortly after turning 18. We are failing our children. We are not protecting them sufficiently, nor are we preparing them for what comes next. Yes, I could tell you horror stories about the cases I've worked on, but that would do no good. We see horror stories in the headlines and still nothing changes. If you want to do something other than rail on a message board or be "upset" when another child's death is in the headlines, how about volunteering? Be a foster parent. Volunteer with CASA or donate. Mentor a youth leaving the system. Lord knows, the help is needed. At minimum, be aware. When you see something "not right," call to get it investigated. Don't mind your own business. That won't stop all of this, sadly, but at least you won't be a silent witness.

Am just sobbing for this beautiful little girl. She was so beautiful and looked full of life and innocence. She suffered beyond comprehension at the hands of such evil creatures that are not even human. It gets worse every day we hear of such atrocities against children. It's hard to take sometimes. She suffers no more. May she Rest In Peace, Little Innocent One..

After reading the comments by Steve...I'm ashamed we share the same name. Sorry this happened to the little girl. The man who did it should die a painful death and the parents should have been held more accountable for what they did. Ultimately, if we didn't protect criminals as our court system always does, our world might be a better place.

And to the person that said we do not have enough adoptive homes or foster homes...it has nothing to do with that. We have people having children not fit to have children, plus adoption costs a crap load.

josee, agree that cabinet locks work with toddlers and preschoolers, but by 6 and 7 a lot of kids have figured out they can get up at night and quietly sneak around the house, getting into every tantalizing thing they've been told not to - opening cabinets, drinking fruit flavored cough syrup, raiding the fridge, getting on the computer (another good reason for password protection), watching tv with the sound down low. Then, they hop back in bed and, unless they made a mess, no one will be the wiser ... except for all the morning yawns or if they ate something that makes their stomach ache - or leave the tv on a kids channel no adult would watch. You'd be surprised how adept some kids are at this, even with the most diligent parents, which these people were not.

They are already in place. If you cannot make enough money to support a family, you do not have one. However, we sadly have programs protecting people from breeding past their limits...the rest of us pay for their babies. In large part, such programs are an integral part of a well run society so that productive citizens are not destroyed forever by a momentary "curveball" in their life. But concerning families and children? People are now using the system to raise families they otherwise have no business raising. Even if they are not using the system, parents rarely pay attention to kids like they have in the past. Literally, I see it in my own family...and they are barely making ends meet with two small girls.

I think we should revert to the old ways because gone are the days when you raised a family because you were a responsible adult. Now many just have kids to have kids...never realizing the dedication it takes. Children are suffering for it too, as this story proves.

stereotypes are pointless...but this guy is white, male and perverted. and those are not sterotypes, just mere facts about him.

but look, the reality is we live in a society that thinks generalizing makes sense.

we know this because our cops profile black males and pull them over at higher rates than their white counterparts because they THINK they might be doing something illegal, most often they didnt even do so much as speed or not use a turn signal when switching lanes.

in the southwest, states like Arizona have made racial profiling acceptable by stopping anyone who looks "illegal" aka, mexican, and demanding their papers - all in an effort to route out illegal aliens.

in the entire us we profile muslim americans, entrap some of them, all in an effort to route out terrorism.

Is it such a leap to think it's time to start profiling white males, all in an effort to route out child molestors?

let's be honest, the stats back this one up.

now you might say "how are you going to do that?" - well the easiest place to start is the internet. im ok with entrapment. im ok with "luring" the child molestors in an effort to bring them out of the woodworks and put them away for life so they cant ever have the chance to harm a child.

the next logical place - police records. lets take a look at all the males (white or otherwise) who've already been booked on sexual crimes of one sort or another, and follow these folks until they trip up...and then put them away for life.

more children are harmed by sexual predators than they are by terrorists...or drug dealers...so lets just put our time and effort where it really makes sense - getting the sicko's off the street and in jail forever.

and if the bulk of them happen to be white guys, so be it.

                                    Sorry Jessica-

the stats DON'T back that white males are pedophiles more than black males. But any arrest stats have more to do with the attitudes of the community and law enforcement and the reporting of child rape in the black VS white community.

There has long been a problem with child molestation, statutory rape, and incest in the black community. So much so, that when the R. Kelly incident and video came out- there was little or no real shock or outrage (even though most blacks think he did it). Several high profile cases of 11 and 12 year old girls being gang raped in black communities (and the strange, non-reaction of the community) hints at a old problem that is not dealt with because of the code of protecting black males. Its also no surprise that black girls have sexual contact and get pregnant at younger ages with more of them reporting having had sex with males significantly older than them- by the time they are 21. The number of black celebritites admitting to childhood sex abuse (and the range in their ages/era) is another hint. If blacks are not careful, we will join Africa in the rape and child rape epidemic.

Stats only tell you what is reported, Jessica. Go by the stats and you'd think blacks use more drugs than whites. But we all know thats not true.

It is a stereotype though Jessica...because I'm a white male and that blanketed ignorant statement made by PBShort is implying that I am a danger to children. Honestly, that idea couldn't be further from the truth because I would give my life to protect the child of a stranger. Your post above is full of craziness. If you really believe it, I feel sorry for you.

Stories like this justify my and others' lack of belief in a God. If God was all powerful, knowing and seeing, wouldn't this poor little girl's 6 years of struggle justify his intervention?

Let's see if I can come up with the God people's talking points for you:

God doesn't intervene, everyone has free-will (though this argument always seems to forget the victim side - where was the 6 year old's free-will?)

She's in a better place now, in the arms of God (how do they know? I mean, if she didn't believe in God, wouldn't she not be there...and on top of that, if the perpetrators of this accept God as their savior and ask for forgiveness, they'll be sittin in heaven too)

There's got to be others, I just can't think of them right now.

But in the Bible, God wipes out the first born of Egypt, including livestock - so, I don't really know if God cares that much about children, as he was probably the first mass baby-killer documented.

No one with even an 8th grade grasp of world history believes in god. Seriously, the last 1,000 years, alone, ought take care of that, or just the Inquisition.

Cappy - let me break this down for you:

When things go good - GLORY GOES TO GOD

when things go bad - GOD HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT

get it yet? obviously, there's nothing good that happened here...so naturally, GOD had nothing to do here.

it's a shame she didnt magically survive, then we could have given GLORY TO GOD.

it's so simple a baboon could grasp it, sheesh.

Jessica, I don't get how/why in the absence of any proof (and actually proof to the contrary) people can still convince themselves that God exists under the current construct that they believe in. It makes absolutely no sense and probably the reason none of them have chimed in on this thread.

The problem is that humans have free will. Do not put the blame on God, put the blame on the demonic humans who do these heinous acts. To me, the world would be a better place without free will when you realize what subterranean humans are capable of doing.

I have long since stopped trying to use logic and reason to change the minds of those who's beliefs require the suspension of logic and reason. I still dont understand how you can believe something so absurd and proudly defend it as if it is some sort of badge of honor to be so closed minded, but that is your choice.

She was living with her mother.

My heartbreaks for any child who has to go through abuse, neglect, etc. Remember the little girl who was pimped by her mother to pay off a drug debt then raped and murdered? Geez, we are supposed to protect children from the ugly, cold world. This is the reason why I am suspicious of everyone when it comes to my kids.

I hope that when they finally go to trial they got the right guy. Another heartbreaking truth is that our justice system is so quick to lock people up when it comes to crimes like this that they put the first person in jail to ease the communities nerves. If he is guilty, lock him up. If he's innocent, hopefully they figure it out quick before another life is lost another family has to deal with the heartbreak.

Why are not the people in this town beating down the doors to the city council, police authorities, child management services care departments, congressmen and senators in their state? Come on people, don't any one of you yellow cowards know how to bombard your newpapers or local TV stations with some questions and demand face to face answers from someone in charge. Stand in the street in front of her house (God forbid not home) and scream her name again and again and again until you get some answers from all those morons who turned their faces on this little girl. How can any of you live in that city and how can you sleep without getting some rest for this angel. God forgive them for they know not what they do or do not do.

According to the story cited elsewhere in an above thread, she was living with mom...mom did not abuse her. The step-mother did. Seriously, how many of you read? And rather than coming here to ask questions, why not research the information for yourself and proof it so you cannot be wrong? lol.

Jessica---I'm not going to defend Catholic priests but again, stereotype. Not every priest was a part of that and if anything, you should blame the higher ups in the church that allowed such disgusting men to move to other parishes rather than report them. Why? Organized religion is a cash cow and they didn't want to ruin an image. Funny. If the majority of people who follow such religions would stop and read a history book---understanding what they are reading is fact---their worlds would come unglued. I did it once to a woman I worked with unknowingly. She an elder and devout Christian. Me a college kid who really like a particular professor she despised. I mentioned him one day. She immediately asked me if I thought a fish could turn into a frog and jump out of the water to eat...and when I more or less said yes, she looked like she might die.

Where were the authorities, sheriff, police, social services, FAMILY, NEIGHBORS?! This is second sad story in as many days coming out of the South... wth is wrong with you good (not) god fearing (I certainly hope so) people (again big question mark on that one...)???!!!???

You would think Social Services given the previous abuse would have been keeping a close eye on this, good ole republicans... cutting funding to social services - because let's be honest - you don't CARE about the life once it arrives on this planet, you are only caring about it before it is born... hypocrites all.

Arkansas borders but is barely the south. People harm other people of all ages, types and sizes all around the world. Not as if any region of the U.S. has a pass on unwanted kids getting killed. Or just unwanted kids. In a country where more than a 1/3 of all pregnancies are unplanned and unwanted, with an even higher percentage of pregnancies occurring for what seems to be less than loving reasons, kids will suffer.

I know first hand that social services will not get involved unless there is proven physical violence against the child. Domestic violence in the house is not a good enough reason to remove the child unless the child gets hurt by the abuser. So a mom can marry a bully who throws temper tantrums, verbally abuses, and breaks furniture, but the authorities won't remove the child from the home until the bastard hurts her. Courts, judges, social workers, all act after the fact, not before.

jennilee - and we the people make the rules they follow.

so we the people are the ones at fault.

and given my experience with my nieces and nephews, I can tell you parents dont take kindly to being told they arent doing a good job, even when that criticism is fully waranted.

one persons child abuse, is another persons "mind your own damn business"...

is neglect abuse? is indifference abuse? is yelling obscentities in front of your children daily abuse?

who draws the line, and where?

and who's going to take care of all those kids.

this is why im pro-choice, there are some people not fit to raise children - and they know it. if all of them gave this kids up for adoption, most of those kids would just wind up living horrible lives.

How can anyone seriously write that about this little girl. Her abuse and suffering during her short life should not be summarized in such a trivial manner...

You are wrong. The birth mom had custody of her after the father went to prison. I don't think this story tells you that. She loved that little girl and she is not to blame in this story.

ALL of us need to be on top of protecting children everywhere.

while I normally disagree with the death penalty I think this case warrants something along the lines of a scene from the movie seven. I am so disgusted by what I just read I just dont even know how to express that much anger. I know it is not the PC thing to say but I have to agree with chuck she would have been better off not being born. Because what she had was defiantly not a life.

Of course that would also include all the other little girls in the world right now, ones that are just like this poor little girl.

this man should be raped untill he is dead made to feel the same pain and horror this little angel felt in her last moments. and it happens all to often, people are sick and twisted. it seems like if there was no bad news there would be no news at all. rest in piece little one, hopefully you can find the piece in death that your family apperently couldnt provide you in life.
