Snatch-and-grab thieves stole about $19,000 worth of watches from a department store in just 13 seconds, police said.
Surveillance video shows the three thieves in action at the Macy's at Firewheel Town Center in Garland, Texas, on Nov. 5.
Investigators said they believe the thieves had been casing the store. The three watch carousels were chained to a display counter, but the thieves were strong enough to rip them off and take off running, police said.
"These people knew what they were doing," Garland police spokesman Officer Joe Harn said. "They had been in and knew what they were going to do. They were in and out very quickly."
Witnesses said the trio fled in a green sedan that was followed closely by a white pickup truck.

It just boggles my mind, the audacity of some people who think they are entitled to take what belongs to others. But I do believe, that sooner or later, such people will get caught in the end. Those watches have identification inventory numbers recorded. With the surveillance tapes, I do believe these three men will find themselves quickly behind bars. Greed and laziness, expecting others to pay for their way through life, will be their undoing. A cot and three hot meals a day, will be their final end.
When their next of kin receives a $500.00 watch from their unemployed drug dealing brother for x-mas, they'll figure it out.
It totally cracks me up when idiots like these guys think that nobody will recognize their faces on the surveillance camera through the media. I give them two days 'till their caught.
Don't count on it. This type of crime won't pull much jail time. Oh wait, it is Texas. Maybe there is hope.

There was a group of thieves that was robbing a Chicago suburban Mall a while back. They'd come in right when the store opened. Put their arms around an entire rack of chained up high-end leather coats and run out! The getaway car always had a stolen temporary vehicle tag. They say they were Irish Traveler's that would go all over the country doing this,making them impossible to catch!

The death penalty for these guys is the only remedy. I'm sick of this. The stores don't absorb the cost of these thefts, nor do the insurance companies. It's passed on to the law-abiding consumer, me and (I presume) you.

Sad thing is $19,000 in 13 seconds is still less than what a Congressman makes.
So, what is the REAL value of these wrist-watches ? As an old Insurance adjuster, I can tell you that fancy wristwatches are considered as "jewelry", and jewelry has a VERY high mark-up from the Manufacturer to the retail store, especially if the watches were bought from the manufacturer by a "Jobber" who marks them up and has salesmen out there who sell them in bulk form to stores...the salesman gets paid a commission..., which is added to the retail cost of the watch.
Now the watches go on sale at the retail store...and they add their mark-up, usually 50%....SO, the factory makes a watch for $75., and marks it up to $200. for sale to a "jobber" who hires salesmen, he marks up the wholesale price of the watch to Macys, which will pay about $275., and then Macys marks up the retail price to walk in customers to about $600. each........
So, what is the loss to Macys ? They claim $600. to their insurance company, which,instead of paying the $600., goes directly to the manufacturer and buys them for $75. each !! So, the actual loss would just be $2375, !
wouldn't think there'd be much money fencing watches these days, and watches on a macty's rack would not be high end either

To bad they didn't know the value of what they took. At $19,000 split three ways its $6,333, not worth it to rob that stuiff and risk prison for years for $6,333.
Now if they were robbing Rolex watches just one alone can be worth $10,000 and up.
Just to fence those watches, they might make $3,000 per crook.
I suspect the Rolex watches were in a more secure location. However mike if they make even $3000 total for the watches I would be surprised.
Selling stolen watches for retail price on the street would be tough. I doubt they will pull in as much as the watches are sold for.

I think that, combined with the divided value of the watches, actually makes them pretty dumb and they shouldn't quit their day jobs. Oh wait, they probably don't have any.
Don't think they will make much selling them on the street or fencing them. Who wears watches, anymore, anyway? Almost everyone I know (particularly younger people) reaches for his/her cellphone to tell the time!

Even less because the 19k is full retail price so they'll get a fraction of that for stolen goods. They'll be lucky to get a grand each.

at the nominal cost of 40g's each per year for 3 - 5 (2 with good behavior) or 7 months factoring in overcrowding.

You forget that these skells almost certainly did a whole bunch of other crimes, even violent felonies.
So, it is worth, even under your theory, prosecuting them. Maybe they haven't been caught and/or charged properly and/or prosecution fell through, even at trial, and/or recd lousy sentences on the other crimes, but here is our chance (remember OJ?).

However Mike, since everyone these days seems concerend about equality, whether it's women's pay, minority ownership of basketball franchizes, or how much money a person has, let's consider this for just a second; How many crimes (whatever category; you pick one) are committed by race per-capita? I've also come across national crime statistics showing the difference between white on black crime versus black on white crime, and the disparity is truly shocking. Shouldn't we be trying to get this into balance so it fits closer with our "equality in every endeavor" obsession? Which group of criminals should we put our emphasis on in order to accomplish this. Should we encourage more white crime per capita or discourage more minority crime?
Why dont all these stores use better cameras, every robbery I see on camera is blurred or barely usable, the stores use the cheapest cameras they can get away with. With better cameras folks like this could be identified, or cars could be traced. Suspect all the stores care about is just deterrence the cheaper the better. When perps kill people and could have been caught earlier if the cameras were just a little better quality then go on to kill others then the decision to go cheap is immoral.
I'm with you on that. The cameras are always placed so high too. I realize it's easier to wire them when there up in the ceiling but to me the top of one hat or one bald head looks pretty much like another to me. Lets see some faces. These guys could be family members and who would know.

This does not even surprise me. I previously worked at a Macy's store in Virginia and on several occasions, our store was boosted of Ralph Lauren polo clothing. The boosters work in teams, where they will case the store for cameras and for any visible store personnel, and will have a waiting car in front of the store entrance. Once they see the opportunity, they would grab as much merchandise as possible and exit the store. Before I can figure out what has happened, I would only notice the swinging entrance doors and a trail of smoke. This what happens when management is only concerned about saving payroll hours.
I watched three males run out of a K-Mart with Craftsman Tool boxes on their shoulders and jump into a waiting car. Store personnel did nothing to stop them and didn't even call police. When I asked why, I was told, "It's not worth my life to confront a thief over a toolbox."

The authorities will probably go through many security recordings prior to the heist to get better photos and the get-away vehicle with outside cameras.

When they are apprehended they will increase the number of African-American men who are incarcerated. No one will be able to cry racism as the video tells the whole story. So why do these dumb crimes? Are they not smart enough to realize they will be giving up 3 to 5 years of their life if caught? I suppose if your life is worthless much as these men have demonstrated then maybe it is worth it. They will return to commit another crime as that is the method of operation of stupid criminals.
