PHILADELPHIA -- The man charged in the murder of a baby and her grandmother during a botched kidnapping and ransom scheme claimed that he killed both victims by accident, according to video released during his court appearance Wednesday.
Raghunandan Yandamuri, 26, is accused of murdering 10-month-old Saanvi Venna and her grandmother, Satyavathi Venna, 61, last month. It happened on Oct. 22, at an apartment complex in Upper Merion where both the Venna family and Yandamuri, a family friend, lived.
Police believe Yandamuri went to the apartment with the intention of kidnapping Saanvi and holding her for ransom. But police say Satyavathi, who was babysitting the child, fought for her granddaughter and was fatally stabbed by Yandamuri.
On Oct. 26, the baby's body was found in the basement of the apartment building and Yandamuri was arrested. Police say they also found a ransom note from Yandamuri demanding $50,000.
'Didn't mean to kill anyone'
On Wednesday, Yandamuri appeared in court for a preliminary hearing. During the hearing, a 23-minute video confession was played for the court, according to NBC10's Deanna Durante.
In the video, Yandamuri told police he "accidentally" slit Satyavathi Venna's throat and that he "didn't mean to kill anyone." The video also showed him confessing to stuffing a handkerchief in the baby's mouth and wrapping a towel around her head when she wouldn't stop crying.

Yandamuri said in the video that he put the baby in a suitcase, escaped via a fire escape and sneaked into the basement of another apartment building.
Yandamuri also told police that when he took Saanvi out of the suitcase the towel was still wrapped around her face and she was unconscious. He said he removed the towel and handkerchief, splashed water on her and left her in the basement while he returned home, took a shower and went to work.
He also told police he went back to the basement around 3:30 p.m. with a bottle of milk for the girl but that she was already dead.
Yandamuri's defense attorney argued in court that since his client did not mean to kill anyone, first-degree murder should be taken off the table. Prosecutors disagreed, citing Yandamuri's ransom note as evidence against the attorney's claim.
According to prosecutors, 10 copies of the ransom note were left in the apartment of the Venna family with several references that if they didn't bring $50,000 by 8 p.m. that night that the baby would be killed. Prosecutors say that showed there was intention and premeditation for murder. The judge agreed with the prosecutors and ordered that Yandamuri stand trial on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, robbery, theft and abuse of corpse.

I do not know about the law in PA where this happened, but in CA where I live whether he intended to kill the people or not does not make in bit of difference. The fact that the death occurred during the commission of the felony kidnapping means he can be charged with first degree murder - It is called the felony murder rule. I am not sure if all states allow for first degree murder charges under the felony murder rule, but in every state he would be guilty of second degree murder as a minimum. I believe that many states make a distinction regarding the severity underlying felony in the felony murder rule and because of the seriousness of the felony of kidnapping to start with the charge of first degree murder would be allowed. If this guy is convicted it is possible that he may face the death penalty, although even if he is sentenced to death it is not likely that the sentence will ever be carried out. Since reinstating the death penalty in 1974, PA has only executed 3 people despite the fact that they have over 1000 people on death row in the state. I think that anyone who murders a helpless child should be executed but it is far more likely that this guy will end up serving life without parole. In any case, he will have a very tough time in prison as even the worst prisoners take a very dim view of someone who hurts a child, particularly an infant.

I think life without the possibility of parole is the worst punishment. Executing him and he suffers for a few minutes. Prison and he suffers for the rest of his life.

Comments on stories like this make me sick. I don't know what's worse, a guy who commits a couple of murders, or a constant lynch mob sitting at their computers, salivating at the chance to comment on what kind of public torture they would get off on.

What of the little baby girl, who was ripped from her grandmother's arms and stuffed in a suitcase? The harming of an innocent child is so very unjust. She did not deserve to be taken from her loving home and she did not deserve the treatment she received in the last hours of her short life. And now her parents must forever live with the memories of how their little baby girl was manhandled and KILLED.
He was a family "friend" and a grown man who should know the difference between right and wrong. He has betrayed that family and cruelly destroyed their lives. What he did was pure evil and I can understand people reacting the way they have. What was said here is no different than the comments we make to each other every day in reaction to this type of story.

These types of crimes against women and children occur much more frequently in countries like India than are reported in the media. Countries like India have a history of covering up these crimes, especially when committed by so called "upstanding" male members of a local society.
There are many countries where abuse against women and children is the norm: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, UAE, Russia, ......but some are our allies we cry ??!! Yes, that is the sad truth, and the list goes on and on, also many African nations are guilty of the same crimes, and most of these crimes go unreported, as anyone reporting such crimes takes a big risk and is in danger themselves.
The death penalty doesn't solve anything, and life in prison is a much worse sentence, in my opinion.
An eye for an eye. I too believe that it has been open season for children for too long! I think that cases like this should go to the State of occurence and let the people decide death or life in prison, since it is our money that will support him in prison. Lets avoid the debt and cases where people are guilty without doubt and also confess the people should be able to decide his fate. I bet crimes would be reduced and our prisons would have space for the people that have commited non violent crimes.

I am also not a citizen, and am working (and living here) legally. You don't HAVE to be a citizen to work. Since what you quoted reads as if he came here legally for a set amount of time, which was 6 months when a tourist visa is for only 90 days, then I would suggest he was most likely on a work visa.
Why you decided to focus on that particular part of this story is more interesting, to me. Particularly when it seems you know naff all about immigration and different types of visa's in the US.

From the article, it mentioned nothing about this criminal working. From other comments on here, it seems like the grandma was the one working 'illegally'. But even in that situation as babysitting, in other cultures, grandmas would never CHARGE a fee to babysit their own grandchild.So if she is doing so voluntarily then there's nothing illegal about it.If she is getting paid then it is illegal.

Look around next time you are out and about, take notice of any babies you observe in their caregivers arms, who are too small to even walk yet, and remember the details of this news story. See if it doesn't stir any sort of negative emotion in you. Babies are sweet and innocent and have no choice but to trust those around them, and this poor baby girl was terrorized.

What we want to do to this POS and what we know is the right and legal thing to do are two different things. People are expressing their feelings, and I see nothing wrong with using a comment thread as their outlet.

Huh? Did you read some of the responses? Not being a U.S. citizen does NOT mean he is here illegally. And you want to tell me in all of U.S. history there was never a U.S. citizen that killed a baby and a grandma? Before I became a U.S. citizen I was a legal resident, worked my a$$ off to support me and my daughter. I also have been without a job being a U.S. citizen. Unless you are a native American you are also of immigration heritage, so zip it. (And if you are native American I apologize and zip it) This was a horrible crime and immigration, religion, politics and having to survive has nothing to do with it. Did you think that she would just give up the baby? Did you think the baby was going to be left alone? Yeah, every inmate who says "I am innocent" is now laughing at you. They changed the story headline. It started out this morning saying he didn't mean to slit the 10 mos. old baby's throat and now it doesn't say that.
MSNBC has a way of getting your attention then changing the story. Don't know why but my best guess would be that they don't have enough info but want to get the story out and update it (unannounced to us) when they get better information. Yeah, it drives me nuts man.

The majority of them know that some things are taboo and killing a mama and baby is one of them. I think he will not last long in the general prison population.
The headline makes no sense. Nowhere in the story does it mention slitting the infants throat ? Did the reporter read their own story ? There should be at least some attempt to get the facts correct, even on the internet !
Pay attention to the facts: read the article in full on MSN, then research it on the internet elsewhere. I have recently began to think that MSN is not good for full reporting of all of the facts.

While I agree there shouldn't even be a trial, he admitted to the crime. It's the way our justice system works that he is guaranteed a lawyer. Said lawyer is bound by law to do anything he or she possibly can to help even the obviously guilty get away with the crime. If they don't do said job they face not only disbarment but also jail for contempt of court. Until our Justice system changes I have a little bit of a issue trying to put everything on this lawyer that got handed a garbage case.

I have to agree with Ron, capitol punishment is too good! He needs to suffer many years in prison. Yeah I know it costs thousands every year to house them but this is one time I think it would be worth the money to know he's suffering. Convict cut arms of 14yr.old girl, went to prison got out in ten years killed again. Fl. guy fed 11yr. old little girl to alligator after he killed her mother. Both those guys have, and do quite well in prison. It cost because we have a for profit system of justice. The more money spent the better the outcome. It is a short walk from cell to tall tree. Rope can't be more than 20 bucks.
It costs because they have Cable TV, Weight rooms and all other forms of comfort in prison. Heck the new prison they just built about a hour north of here even had carpeting in the cells. This is prison not a holiday inn express.

This story is completely wrong. It was the grandmother who got her throat slashed. The baby suffocated after having a handkerchief stuffed into her mouth, her head wrapped in a towel, and her body being shoved into a suitcase. It a bald-faced lie that he expected the baby to survive that. But, since it is Pennsylvania, the death penalty doesn't mean a damn thing. He'll die of old age, unlike the little girl.

They won't have to bother with all of that. He'll be tried in Pennsylvania - a death penalty state that keeps their death row inmates as permanent guests. And poor he wasn't. That is like saying I put the pie on the plate with my vegetables but I was not going to eat the pie. I ate it by mistake. If you put yourself in the situation you are responsible for everything that happens in that situation. Once he took possession of the child he was responsible for the well being of that child. If a stranger came in and killed the child while he had possession of the child he would be liable for whatever damage was done.
I guess we'll just have to "accidentally" execute him. We won't mean to, but it will happen. Or, better yet, to save the taxpayers money, maybe he will be killed when an officer's gun accidentally discharges while he's in jail. Yea, I like that one better. Get-r-done!!
Since this guy is a foreigner, legal or illegal, could the govt send him back to India? Could he really only be deported? Could he not be executed because he is a foreigner. He would only get life? Time for legislators to get control of this country back from an insane Supreme Court. Hanging a piece of trash like this should not be "cruel and unusual" - it should be simple justice served. Look at the posts here this morning - the people of America know what needs to be done to get the country straightened out, but the fools and thieves in DC will not obey the will of the people. Here is a good example of subhuman filth whose very existence is an insult to the entirety of humanity. There is no fitting punishment cruel enough for this piece of garbage, but I'm sure we could come up with something, such as a naked, upside down crucifixion, slowly lowered into a vat of boiling oil, with the crowd controlling the rate of descent. I would pay good money to witness and participate in such an enjoyable thing. OF course, we wouldn't mean to do it. It would just happen accidentally. Other options might include slow-roasting him in a nice big convection oven after injecting him with enough stimulants to keep him awake the entire time, or strapping him standing up in a large tank, and slowly filling it with water, and adding piranhas when it got up to his waist, and rats when it got up to his chin. These are things that deserve serious consideration when dealing with vermin like this. Just shooting him would be much too compassionate.

We are a nation of laws, not justice. He will plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, and that is how the law works. Where is the justice in that.
PA does have the death Penalty... But it has only executed 3 people since 1976, all in the 1990's. There are 200 inmates on death row at this time.....

Take him to trial quickly, have short trial, find guilty of first degree murder with quick execution date, execute. That is what should be done. Never will that state actually follow through with an execution. Super pleased the USA allowed this POS to come here and murder 2 innocent people, now we get to feed him 3 meals a day for the remainder of his life. I hope someone takes him out in there.
@Srich, we can only hope the rest of his life will be short and terrifying, but likely it will be solitary confinement to avoid any unfortunate international incidents. I have a Cessna that I will volunteer to radio control and donate to fly him back to where he comes from, well at least part way.
