She didn't say "her" son in particular threw the crayons. She said "students" did and the bus driver basically took it out on her son. Which if you ask me, did throw them because this bus drivers job is on the line and I'm sure he knew who by those big ass monitoring mirrors they have over their heads.

All school buses should have cameras especially just for this kind of reason. There are many with them but not all.

Kids will be kids. They're cruel to one another and do not understand the repercussions of their actions like adults do. This includes bullying. They just don't know how bad things are or how much it mentally/physically hurts someone until it's too late and they commit suicide.

It's gotta be pretty bad for kid to commit suicide. Kids are scared of a lot of things but to not be afraid of that, it's gotta be pretty bad man.

That is why paddling should be an option for schools. These brats need serious spanking.

I agree that cameras need to be installed on all buses. The footage would clear the matter up pretty quickly.

However, assuming it all happened as stated in the article, hitting someone for throwing crayons is an overreaction. The driver should have stopped the bus, taken names, then reported them to the school.

What the kids did was also an overreaction and I'm glad they're being charged.

If we assume for a minute that the mother's story is accurate (none of us actually know), then the bus driver got what he deserved. Even if teenagers are throwing crayons at you, you don't grab and hit them.

Oops, I take back what I said earlier. Should have watched the video first. Apparently there was a camera on the bus and previously-reported incidents were ignored by school administrators. Now I can see where the problem is: school administrators not enforcing discipline so the kids just escalate their behavior until you get this incident.

A minor doesn't deserve to be hit by a bus driver, even if they were throwing crayons. There are plenty of other options for discipline.

Before judging anyone, i am very curious on the "truth" of the mother. LAst time I checked though, they wouldn't have arrested AND charged these kids if in fact he "hit" the kid as she claims. I personally think the kid is trying to get out of trouble and told her that and she is naive and stupid as her son is.

We just had a 15 year old in our city car jack and kill someone then shoot at our police officers. Whose raising these kids these days? probably 16 year old's who got pregnant. Too much doesn't make sense about this situation. Let's say it happened exactly as is represented. Kid throws crayons at driver, driver starts hitting kid. I don't for a minute believe that NO child on that bus had a cell phone to call the police or even mommy or the school with. Why start beating up the bus driver instead of call for help? The only way I could see this being acceptable is if the video shows they had reason to fear for the life of the other kid, and somehow, I doubt that to be the case. Even my 8 year old kid would know to stand back and call for help.

Back in the day, and this was in California of all places, if you acted up on the bus the driver would pull over and make you get off the bus. You walked from there. I am sure all kinds of lawsuits would be filed if this was done today. My how we have evolved and made things so much better for the punk asses and criminals. I believe that the most appropriate consequence would be to have these same 6-7 kids banned from the school bus for the rest of the school year while forcing them to walk to school each and every day---with a check in at the office upon arrival. If you read the article and saw the video then you would know that parent who claimed one of them were throwing crayons didn't have all of the story. The bus driver wasn't arrested it was the kids. There were surveillance cameras on the bus which led to the arrests along with testimony from other students. The transportation director also said complaints were made about certain students and they were allowed to continue riding the bus sometimes the same day the complaints were made. Education is a right in this country but that right can be taken away if your child hasn't been raised properly and/or can't control themselves on the bus. You should be forced to find alternatives to their education, not the state or this country. Children have been expelled from school for bringing a gun, distracting a bus driver, attacking a bus driver for pete's sake should also be met with expulsion as well as jail time. Raise your kids to respect adults, riding the bus isn't a right if they are dangerous to everyone on the bus as well as other people on the road.

MonkeyMo, they probably wouldn't have used their phones to call for help, they would have video recorded it and put it on-line. Hell, if we look we could probably find a video of them beating the crap out of the bus driver on youtube or facebook.

This is a load of crap and I'm glad these little punks have been charged. Plenty old enough to know what they were doing was wrong. It will do them and everyone else good and if they are lucky they will learn a lesson and not head down a path that has been taken all too often by kids like this nowadays. Parents need to start being parents again and teach their kids respect and discipline them which means a swat on the butt from time to time not just a finger waving and timeout in their room. (I got swats and timeout sometimes, sometimes both, but when only it was a timeout it was face in a corner with nothing to do but usually it was a swat and I learned fast; I'm glad my parents took the time to discipline me and keep me in line, sounds weird to say/type but it has done me well) Also wouldn't be surprised if the mother saw this as a potential $$ opportunity by suing. Hopefully they did have a camera on the bus and that will clear this up, time will tell. Either-way the driver may have been in the wrong but the kids were with out a doubt in the wrong and more so.

I will now add something to this, not to try and stir the race pot (we all know how the media likes to do that every chance they get) and sorry for those easily offended (ok not really, grow up) but as we see the kids were all black and so was the driver from what I could tell (btw watched the video but no sound). But of course we don't discuss things like black on black crime and the knuckleheads Al and Jesse will of course not address this or say anything since they can't spin it as a hate crime b/c no white person was involved. Like I said not trying to stir the race pot and all groups have issues but as well all know and hear the elephant in the room is the rising crime rate in inner city neighborhoods by youth, not all over but take Chicago for example, major increase, and where is mainly black youth. Of which are mostly males but it seems this is never addressed or looked at. Only time is where others can be blamed and make it be a hate or race issue. Very sad. Like I said all groups have issues but young black males in inner city neighborhoods are losing the fight and this is a serious problem for the black community that needs to be addressed and IMO one of if not the biggest problems the black community faces. I know maybe a little off topic but I tire of seeing people dance around the issue or if your not black being told your a racist and/or wrong for saying such but it is the truth and it is time it starts being addressed in a serious manner and not always having a BS race spin put on it. Working on and starting to solve this issues and get youth to change their mindset will start to help solve many other social racial motivated issues. It's a major issue in the black community that is always ignored and needs immediate attention. Debora: They need more than walking to school. I don't, for a second, think that this behavior is limited to the bus. I think you'll probably find that these kids also have been bullying in school and disrupting. They need a little "time out" in a juvie facility. Mama who said he son was beaten by the driver because someone was throwing crayons probably needs to have a parenting class as well. I truly think that these kids should, as a part of their sentencing, be removed from the home UNTIL the parent completes parenting classes. If they have siblings, they should be monitored. Kids do NOT just one day decide to beat up a bus driver. They are out of control, and the parent cannot or will not do anything about it. If the parent can't control the child, what makes you think they can control other kids that they may have? If the parent produces one child that assaults people, there are very high chances that the other child(ren) will do the same.

I would suggest the parents of the seven individuals involved, ride the bus with their adolescent children, until they are deemed responsible to ride without supervision. IF they were allowed to ride, and IF they were not in boot camp for the next two years. Inconvenient ? You bet.

Liberal and conservative alike have discipline issues - if you look at the video of that bus monitor that was verbally abused on that school bus, you'll see that those were middle class white children, and many of them were from conservative families. Children as no longer being taught respect - from ANYWHERE. Teachers are not allowed to discipline children in school - the parents don't want someone *else* spanking them. Some teachers aren't even allowed to give detention - mostly because the kids won't show up for it, or the parents say it was all the *teacher's* fault - the TEACHER must have done something to make the kid act out because HER son wouldn't do it on his own. Just like this crayon throwing moma said that the problem started when the bus driver beat her son - no, the problem started when SHE didn't teach her son to sit down and behave on a bus.

Ken-848629: You won't believe how well that works! Especially if the parent is really interested in stopping the behavior. Years ago, when I worked at an Alternative Middle School (for kids with behavior problems, police issues etc who couldn't be in regular school or be expelled due to age) we had kids that had severe behavior problems. We instituted a program like that. One student started a fight at lunch, and his mother was called in. She embarassed him so badly - by sitting next to him all day in school, reading his work to him, asking him if he wanted her to cut up his food for him at lunch - that it stopped his behavior cold, and almost every other child (except one or two who knew their parents didn't care enough to show up if they were told to come) stopped their behavior problems out of fear that THEIR parents would do the same thing. Oh yes, make mom or dad ride the bus with sonny boy. If the parent doesn't embarass the child into behaving, the other kids will tease him relentlessly for it.

I really have no idea if these kids are white trash, black trash or brown trash but I know they are TRASH, FUTURE FELONS and CURRENT WASTES OF AIR.

What kind of parents do these kids have that they are raised to think that throwing things at a bus driver while he is driving, or anyone else at any time for that matter, and then attacking him is acceptable behavior. These are middle school kids who are acting more like wild animals than children. I am glad that these kids were arrested, it is just too bad that we can not arrest their parents as well. I hold the parents of these children just as responsible as the kids themselves. These kids have been raised by their parents in such a way that they think this is acceptable. These kids should be permanently expelled from the public schools. Send them to reform school or let their parents pay for private school for them. Public school employees should not be forced to put up with this type of behavior from students. If people think that is too extreme, then as a minimum they should banned from any school provided transportation. Since these kids obviously do not know how to behave on a school bus let their parents deal with getting them to school either by driving them themselves or by paying for private transportation. What makes this even worse is the fact that this was not the first time that there had been an incident involving these same kids. There had been previous complaints filed and neither the school district or the parents did anything to correct this problem. They simply allowed it to escalate until it got to this point where these kids put the life of everyone on that bus, as well as anyone on the road around it, at risk of being injured or killed as a result of their actions. The people who were reponsible for allowing these problems to continue and escalate despite the previous complaints should also be held responsible and should be fired and never again be allowed to work for any school system.

Jeepgal, I'm another liberal, and if either of my children behaved this way on the bus, or anywhere else for that matter, they would have reason to fear coming home. Being a liberal does not mean you don't believe in discipline. To copy Calvin, above, I also taught my kids respect for others, morality, and right from wrong, without any help from religion or the state. At virtually every parent-teacher meeting we go to, our kids teachers comment positively about our kids' manners, or sense of fair play, empathy, etc.

Perhaps you should refrain from making blanket judgements about others simply because they don't agree with you politically.

As a public school teacher myself, and one who understands the importance of educating all children, I believe that when your opportunity comes on someone else's dime, that is a privilege (that's right, public education should not be an irrevocable right). These students should have their privilege to attend public school indefinitely revoked. The "feel good" movement is dead. It is time to send strong messages about civility and being a positive force within society.

I dont condone any one hitting a kid , like some thug, punches to the face ( unless in self defense ) but if a kid tossed crayons at me, I am grabbing them and tossing them over my knee and lighting those butt cheeks up. I have a hard time understanding how a bus driver can be hitting a kid and driving at the same time. Doesn't make sense. I bet he got in a few blows after he stopped the bus--but the incident pretty much had to be started by the kids...I don't see the logic of him turning around while he was driving and warping on a kid. He probably told the kids that he would whoop them if they didn't stop throwing sh!t at him and they attacked him. More logical chain of events, IMHO.

To those who are curious as to why no kid did the right thing? Even the best school districts have problems. I've worked in a nationwide top 3 three district for 10 years at the middle school level. I have seen many fights, and not once have I seen a single kid attempt to do the right thing. Not once. They represent three camps: 1. Those who would do the right thing but are pressured by the mob mentality to just stare like everyone else 2. Those who enjoy these types of spectacles 3. Those who might not enjoy these types of spectacles, but are drawn to them nonetheless (rubber-necking syndrome if you will.

Of course, this is my experience, and I don't pretend to think it represents the experiences of all middle-school teachers.

In addition, a colleague of mine has a mother who has worked in our same district for over 30 years. A young lady from China joined her first-grade English as a Second Language class with a pretty good grasp of the English language already. At the end of the day, my friend's mother asked her to write a journal describing how her first day of school was different from school in China. The first relevant comment was that the students on the bus were so loud they seemed like animals. The second was that in China, most of the students she met would have been brought to the front of the room and made to cry.

I share that only as a seemingly topical story. Upon further reflection, it came to me that you would not even be able to accomplish that with most kids even if you wanted to because many kids are raised to not experience shame, and some to even fight against it and anyone who makes you try to experience it. In a society with no shame, classless losers like those on Jersey Shore making millions of dollars is just one of the things you get that you deserve. Multiple instances of kids berating and assaulting bus drivers is just one of many others.

What I found interesting was the end of the video when the student mentions something about saying things about someones parents isn't right - (paraphrase) which ended the story where it should have started. Perhaps the bus driver wasn't a mute and said something to incite a beating by a rogue crayon wielding gang of middle schoolers.

The most logical consequence I can think of for this behavior is the parents now have to homeschool the kids. I remember a judge who, tired of hearing "I can't watch him every second!" from the parents of delinquents, would shackle parents of bratty teens to their kids. I totally agree with that punishment, but it's still ineffective if junior rules the roost. When kids behave like this, you can bet they are a problem within their classrooms as well. They need more time (quantity and quality) with Mom and Dad. Once the parents find out how difficult it is to control their kids, they'll either crack down or give up. Either way, they'll understand the burden they placed on the school better, and everyone will simply get what they deserve. So I vote for homeschooling for these kids and all others like them. IF any of those little walking retro abortions had been my kids they'd not have been able to sit for a month. CaerRaven, what would you have the armed guards do? Shoot the kids. I don't think that would fly with the community , the law, or the school system. In reference to your child not being able to sit for 30days. He'll be healing about the time you get out of jail. Things have changed alot since the 60's.

I do not understand how any parent could think it is okay for their child to throw crayons or anything else. I can only suppose they do not comprehend the dangers of distracting the bus driver, which can put their child and the others in danger. I do not understand how ANY parent can try to justify an attack on a bus driver (or a teacher) by their child. I guess the sad fact is there are far too many people who think it is okay to hit other people if you are angry with them. Those kind of people need to be locked up like the animals they are.

Right after high school I met a guy who had attended a neighboring district. He had his own place, car payed off and was living off of investments at the age of 18. How is this relevant? When he was in 5th or 6th grade his school bus had a flat tire, and the driver told all students who lived within a 5 block area to walk home. His finances were a result of spending months in the hospital defying the odds by learning to walk again from a broken back, after a car had topped the ridge and hit him that day the bus had a flat tire. The school district payed dearly for that decision, and that's why requiring that the kids physically walk to school each day will never happen. The district can, however, require that they find their own way in and if the parents choose to have them walk at that point, the district is in the clear if something happens.

Why waste money on guards on the bus. Give the drivers and teachers guns to protect themselves. Every one of the kids involved should be charged with terrorism. Also, wreckless endangerment regardless of life. One count for each person on the bus.

Haven't seen the vid but if all is true and the teen was throwing crayons at the driver while he was driving then some adult need to whip that kids a$$. Or just roll the damn bus to teach all those little POS's a lesson. Those teens that attacked the driver should be put down like dogs. I will bet this wont be the last time some adult will have to deal with their crap.

This is another example of little friggin thugs being raised with no education on respect, behavior, or fear of any consequences by parents that are just as irresponsible or clueless as they are. They need to have their asses whipped with a razor strap about 5 or 6 times like they used to do when I was in middle school. I NEVER repeated ANY act of misbehavior after that kind of discipline. Kick them off the bus to start with. Pursue criminal charges secondarily, and certainly talk to the parents, who must be made aware if they aren't already. As for getting to continue to go to school? We'll see.

Pick the kids up in a D.O.J. buss, chain them to their seats until they get to school! They would be treated as the criminals they are, searched before boarding the buss. Then the other suddents would see their disgrace (with their parents).

I had a woman who worked for me that was sentenced to 60 days jail on weekends for her sons assault charges. He was in 7th grade. (she was sentenced on his 3rd offence )

She left work every Friday at 3 reported to jail by 4 and was released Sunday at 8. If she would have missed she would have been picked up and booked on evading custody and escape and sentenced for up to 3 years.

Needless to say her brat was swiftly dealt with and put in line by his parents.

The last time I saw the "little meanie" he was a bright kid loved by all and tutored others in school.

Funny how parents may react to know they could do time for their minor children's crime.

Make the Parents cover all the Bus Driver's medical costs, loss of income due to the injuries, and put the kids in jail for a few years. If they are starting that early there is no hope for them in the future.

maybe it's time we split our children up - and let the good kids who have respect for each other and adults, and who value their education to continue on with their learning without the distraction of all the kids (and their parents) who just dont give a crap, and seem to think the only people responsible for teaching their kids ANYTHING is the school.

Never had these problems when I was young instead we had something called discipline and kids had to earn their rights and privileges they were not just granted. and they could be easily taken away, then came the liberals and the whole system collapsed and now its a world of s#it and they think they did something good. now you can't move ten feet without bumping into a giant pile of Liberal s#it. but that is OK because they can blame it all on the conservatives. that is what conservatives are for to blame all the liberals screw ups on. that is why you always see a liberal pointing their finger. and there favorite words I will, they did.

@bernie...it's not fair to assume all children raised by a single parent are all thugs. i'm a single parent and my kids are middle school age just like the kids in this story, my kids have not been in trouble in school or w/ the law, they don't run the streets, nor have my kids raised themselves...i have raised my kids. i know PLENTY of kids raised in two parent households that are complete brats. to say a father teaches them how to act civilized is also unfair. i'm quite capable of teaching my kids right from wrong. i know the statistics of kids raised by a single parent and how they are more likely to end up in jail, etc... but i'm trying to break that stereotype. and yes, there are a lot of kids raised by single moms who are out of control and the mom doesnt care. my kids aren't perfect, and neither am i, but i've done the best i can. in a perfect world kids would be raised by both parents, but i can't help it that my kids dad not only divorced me...he apparently divorced his kids, too.

i'm not surprised this happened in VA. i grew up in VA (in the VA Beach/Norfolk area) and i liked it as a child. i moved back to wisconsin in '04, but went back to VA in summer of last year. oh how that place has seriously deteriorated. my oldest was bullied and nobody (police or the school) did anything. there were written threats and verbal threats (which i witnessed) and still all the powers that be just had a "what do you want me to do about it? kids will be kids" attitude. so glad to be back in wisconsin again. never again will i live in VA.

When I was growing up there was a notorius "training center" near where I lived, for kids who did crap like this, basically a juvenile prison. I was TERRIFIED that I might do something to get sent there. IF I ever WAS going to do something that I thought might get me sent there, I stepped back and didn't do it. Also, my parents, both of them, would have stripped my legs with a belt. But the main reason was I DID NOT want to go to Jackson Training Center. Send these, and others, who pull serious crap like this for a couple of years to a place like that.

Jeepgal66: Sorry, but this liberal Mama not only raised her child to be a decent human being who is now raising her own child decently, but also worked in a school that dealt with the kind of child in this story on a daily basis. The majority of the children in my classroom came from white, middleclass, conservative backgrounds. Their parents dealt with infractions with beatings - which led to them beating classmates because they were taught that "might makes right", "spare the rod and spoil the child". Many of the families later went on to be required to have family counseling in order to have the child returned to regular school. At least two of these families eventually lost ALL their children to social services because they continued to beat the children in an abusive manner. It's not that anyone was liberal and didn't discipline - it's that they didn't teach them right from wrong.

D Buck - it's not whether someone's a liberal or a conservative. These kids were black so you equate them with the people who voted Obama into office. They could have very well have been conservative families - without knowing the families involved, you have no idea. As I just told JeepGal66, I worked with these kind of kids on a daily basis when I taught, and the majority in my class came from middle class, white conservative background. Parents spanked - sometimes to the point of abuse - and used discipline of all sorts. Didn't work. The kids became violent, a few were unable to stay in a regular classroom at all. The parents still didn't teach right and wrong. They also did not teach that there is a consequence for their actions - and it's still going on. Look at the school in Texas that's teaching the kids that don't want that RFID tag (to try to curb class cutting) that it's ok for them to say it's against their religion. Instead of understanding that the administrators are trying to curb class cutting and crime by students there, they are trying to force the administration to drop the only thing that have left to try to stop the behavior issue.

Roanoke schools typical behavior. It's why I left there as a teacher, after being abused and threatened, and the administration just sat back and let it go on. And, the district administration is to blame, not the local (school) admins. They try to do what is best, but the district overrules them constantly. So afraid of being sued. Now, how about the driver suing the district?

I've had the same experience, except it was my son that was the thug. He absoluely refused to Obey me, his teachers, or the law. When I asked for some help, it was "we can't and we won't". Yet if I had of wailed him like he deserved; want too guess how much jail time I would have gotten as a child abuser? Police would call, the school would call and I would tell them do what ever you have to do, he doesn't listen to me. Now as a grown man, with a high school diploma and a tech school degree, he wishes he didn't have all those arrests, etc. on his record. And guess what, he still doesn't listen to me, but he goes to work everyday and stays out of trouble with the law, so I just let him be, that's all that I can do.

The manner of discipline is somewhat irrelevant the important thing is accountability, structure and self worth, also a sense of shame top that off with a parent that is also a friend and inner acts strongly, not necessarily the soccer mom slave woman and do all dad just good friends that are a part of the child's every day life. people devote a hour a day to their pets and don't even have a clue where their child is or what they are doing, kids growing up with one parent etc, society is part of the problem we live in a sick society and no one wants to acknowledge it. people need to lay down some rules and get rid of the TV start inner acting with your child. in short get a life and share it with your child, half the parents out there today don't have a clue about what they are doing and a great deal of them are patting themselves on the back when they don't deserve it. this society is f'ed up and you people know it so quit fooling your selves. people take their kids to a movie and never say a word to them, they should take them fishing instead or camping for a few days so they can start communicating and relate to each other, of course allot of people today don't know how to camp or fish, in that case find some common ground.

The woman you are referring to was not kicked. She got some verbal abuse from the kids. A Truth Seeker should know that. You are way out of line to try and compare some taunting by kids and an attack where the bus driver was seriously injured and the kids are being charged with a felony.

This isn't about race. It is about respect--or the lack thereof. Roodles...I saw the video of the monitor being bullied. It was horrible. So, how about a white kid that rapes and kills a 6 year old white girl. That is in the news today. Not about race....never has been. It is about parents refusing to make their kids take personal responsibility for their actions.

Everybody forget race for a minute. What it didn't say is how old the teens were. There is a big difference in 13 and 18. If they were older kids they probably could have done some severe damage to this guy. 13 and 14 YO's are just kids, but the older teens are as strong as a grown manand they may have thought they were protecting their friend from being beaten up by this older guy.

we don't know the race of the students. however it says "her son" so at least one was male and likely it was him and his friends. I live near the area and rode the bus during my middle school and high school days. I must say the preteen and teen boy behaved like animals on the bus...and in school too, but not so much. They would scream and shout like...I can't even describe. They would mock the driver's driving and call him or her names. It was horrible. I usually had my headphones on to block all their noise but they would leap out of their seats over me. When Columbine happened they would loudly claim how cool it was and they too would bring guns to school and shoot it up. Even if they were joking, it was very scary. When I saw the old lady being harassed by those boys in that video, I wasn't surprised it happened. Well... I'm not saying all males are obnoxious like this, after all the 55 old bus driver was male. But it happens all the time and hopefully more must be done because the driver could've had an accident and killed an innocent bystander...maybe seatbelts, but ones that open in by either the driver or in an accident...

Somebody here NEEDS to point out that the school bus driver WAS driving a bus with a LOT of kids...when hit with a crayon, this so called child...ENDANGERED...EVERYONE on that bus and around that bus! Had the driver been hit in the eye....careened off the road...hit an oncoming vehicle...etc this could have been deadly to a lot of people!

Your child's lack of taking responsibility for his own actions by placing the blame onto another will not help your child grow up secure within him/herself while abiding by laws and respect for another. The mother of one of the alleged attackers told Richmond's CBS6 station that the incident began when students on the bus threw crayons at the bus driver. She claims that the driver became agitated and started hitting her son, which triggered the assault.

Yeah, no kidding. My baby said he didn't do it. Those marks on the bus driver are fake. He got mad at my boy so the other children kicked the crap out of him - he deserved it.

I can see her thinking any of those above. Apparently what she can't believe is her baby needs to go to jail for a while. Most kids I knew who were out of line had parents who refused to admit their kids did anything wrong. (They said they didn't believe it, but I highly doubt they didn't know why kind of kids they had.)

Speaking as a retired school bus driver...let me tell everyone,the older they are (the students that is) the worse they are. The kids seem to think they have unlimited rights.Most of the time they think they can do just about any darned thing they want to while on the school bus,and get away with it.

God help the school bus driver that demands the school bus riders be a little repectful of the driver...some kids think it's perfectly acceptable to bully/yell at the bus driver.Or to be total idiots while on the bus ride home.

If the driver tells the kids to "stop that,sit down",and stop distracting the job of the adult on the bus...that being getting students safely from point a to point b, they (the driver) are seen as a trouble maker,and a reason for the school to complain to the bus company.And we were taught as drivers, that there are only certain things,said in a specific manner to unruly students that are acceptable.Too bad many high school bus riders couldn't put the same effort into their grades as they do into making the bus driver's life a living hell.

School boards,at least in my opinion,aren't any better than the spoiled bus riding brats attending the schools within their jurisdiction...the principals seem to take the students point of view,and don't believe much of a word the drivers tell them/fill out a report for.

I welcomed cameras(in our school district),on our buses. It's probably one of the few recourses that a driver has when there's a "bus issue", pretty self-explanatory.

I hope every one of the fools involved in this incident is held accountable.My bus driving days are over--too much drama,too many politics for my liking.I would have luved to have had some of the parents of these little darlings ride the bus for a couple weeks,to see how their special little jonnie,matthew, vinnie or marco treated someone other than "mommie or daddy".

For many of these "parents" (and I use the term loosely,because most of them think their child can do no wrong,or quite frankly don't give a damn), it'd be a real wake-up call.

You couldn't pay me enough to do the job again...one ulcer's enough, thank-you. I hope the driver in question recovers,and is awarded damages. As for the students in question--they should be booted off the bus for the remainder of the school year and let "mommie and daddy" deal with getting them to and from school every day.And I can finally say what I couldn't say while driving my bus route....

@capaleen-3491630,thank you for telling it like it is! I once was employed by the maint. dept. of a school district, and the middle schools were the worst. The majority of our repairs were due to vandalism, committed during school hours! But mommy and daddy won't have to deal with getting them to and from school if you kick them off the bus. Doubtful any of these kids have both at home, so it would probably be just mommy.

@ Paul and Tarzan - What do you expect? A parent's ability to discipline kids has been whittled away over the past few decades. We've had courts rule kids have the full rights as adults but they don't have the wisdom to use those rights properly. We've had courts rule the parent's hands are tied when it comes to the discipline some kids really need. We've had courts rule in some areas trouble makers can't be expelled from school.

No wonder they think they rule the nest. We've told them they do.

Paddling isn't the answer, at least not by itself, and I have some concerns about those who advocate it. I was paddled once in sixth grade, for, of all reasons, not doing my homework for history class. What did that event teach me? To despise that teacher and his subject. It was a reaction to what that teacher, arbitrarily, decided was a defiance of his authority. I never talked back to him, or did anything spiteful. I simply failed to do homework one time. If you want effective discipline, you have to do something to leave an impression for weeks, not hours. Make him serve detention in the lunchroom, cleaning up. Give him to the janitor for a couple of hours to help clean the school. Making him polish the floors instead of hanging out with friends will hurt him *inside* way more than a paddle would *outside*, and for a lot longer. If the parents complain about having to come get precious Junior themselves instead of him riding the bus home, remind them that Junior is the cause of that hassle and that perhaps they should be taking steps to ensure he doesn't do it again.

For every student for whom paddling (ie, pain) results in compliance, it fosters rebellion in another and resentment in another. Sure, they may comply on the surface, but underneath, you've only damaged that child's respect for the educational process, and the educators.

And NO basketball careers!:)

I agree 100% diane. The problem lies with the parent(s). If you can get the parent "on board" with their little wunderkid suffering the consequence of their action while on the bus...that's great!

Didn't matter how many times I repeated it to the students that rode on my bus, they didn't seem to grasp the concept of...

"To get respect,you've got to give respect". The kids don't usually care. About the only thing that ever seem to work,was......oh wait, that's right,nothing seem to work,that's why I retired from bus driving.

My only hope is that,someday...some of those same stupid students have the same job as I did,and have the opportunity to be subjected to the same kind of ignorant abuse that some of the rest of us were.Poetic justice,yes? And yes....there were good students on the school bus, but unfortunately they were outnumbered by the idiots riding the bus.

If there's ONE thing I wish I could have posted of,, a sign with the saying, that sums up the attitude of a school bus drivers everywhere....

If school buses had seat belts it might slow these little bullies down.

If the students specifically targeted the bus driver for his race then it can be classified as a hate crime. Time will tell.

It isn't being called a race crime because it probably didn't matter to the bullies what color the driver was. People need to stop making racial remarks regarding assaults. Focus on the behavior and not the race of the perpetrators and, just perhaps, we might start turning some of these behaviors around.

Parents are lazy and are afraid of teaching ANY discipline to thier kids nowadays, kid can sue the parents! Thanks to CPS! I see kids acting up all the time, especially in grocery stores! The parents like ignore the little brat and then give in by "rewarding" them with a candy bar!!

One time back in the late eighties I was in a public place and one of my daughters started acting up and I took her into one of the bathrooms, mabe 20 feet away, when I come out after spanking her some girl walked in and said, "you, b, I dont beat my children", I go, too bad, lets see what they turn out like ten years from now. spanking and beating are two different things. Sometimes I will be in Wal Mart and see these little brats acting up and I just want to say something to the parents, but mostly I just give them the evil eye, you certainly cant blame the children , that is one area where its definately learned behavior. suse...Yes, we can blame the children. That is how personal responisibility is learned. By putting the blame where it should be--directly on the person or persons who did the offending behavior or crime.

colorblind: well of course they should take responsibility for their actions after they reach a certain age where they realize that they are doing wrong, but what I am saying is that the parents need to train them right in the first place. That's what parents are for, I mean really you cant learn to do right unless you are taught right and wrong. Children do not learn to be good on their own, of course we have the conscience that is God given but they still need parental guidance and that is sure lacking in todays society. People are afraid of CPS and if I had young children still I would spank mine right in front of CPS you can bet your boots on that!!!!!!

Kids today are sickening, my kids were taught (in the 80's) to call adults Mr. or Mrs. whatever the case was, they were told to give up their chair to adults, they did not interrupt adults that were talking etc. and they took responsibility for their wrong actions. I taught my children this because that is what I was taught when I was young in the 60's, but my bad , I forgot this is 2012, what was I thinking we cant make the little dieties do anything, they might divorce their parents.

Beat the living hell out of the little hoodlums and ship 'em off to prison. Real prison. Then let the driver sue their parents for every damned dime they're worth and if they're worth nothing, throw them in the can too. It's time for parents to take this country back from children and lawyers.

Lack of home training and ignorant, uneducated parents produce children like this no matter what the race. Yes, these kids were obviously black ghetto types, but are they any worse than the white kids who relentlessly bully each other to the point of suicide? Are they any worse than the little white kids who verbally abused their elderly bus monitor until she cried? Are they any worse than the young white men who shoot em up bang bang everyone in their school? I do not believe so. How can you criticize your neighbor's lawn when you have so many weeds in your own?
