'I screwed up royally,' Petraeus writes to old Army chum

/

Former CIA Director David Petraeus.

“I screwed up royally … (but) Team Petraeus will survive,” former CIA Director David Petraeus wrote in a letter to an old Army chum after resigning his post and admitting to an extramarital affair, NBC News has confirmed.

The letter to retired Brig. Gen. James Shelton, dated Nov. 20, was first reported Wednesday by Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper

In the letter, Petraeus thanked Shelton  for sending him some pictures and a note saying he still had faith in him despite the scandal that lead to his resignation.

“I screwed up royally. I paid the price (appropriately) and I sought to do the right thing, at the end of the day,” it read in part. “Team Petraeus will survive though have obviously created enormous difficulty for us. Holly is however once again demonstrating how incredibly fortunate I was to marry her.”

Paula Broadwell, leaves her home in Charlotte, N.C., on Nov. 19.

Petraeus resigned his post on Nov. 9, citing an extramarital affair. Government and law enforcement officials have told NBC News that the 60-year-old former commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan and coalition forces in Iraq was involved with his 37-year-old biographer, Paula Broadwell, who also is married.

Shelton, 76, a longtime friend of Petraeus who described himself to the Daily Mail as a father figure to the former CIA director, told the newspaper that he never considered Petraeus “a woman chaser” and that Broadwell, who interviewed him for her book “All In,” was “more savvy than Dave about the nature of the things that they got involved with.”

“She’s not a kid. In a lot of ways I think she knows more about the world than Dave – I’m talking about sex,” he said. “I don’t think Dave ever thought about that too much, he only thought about the Army and gave it everything he had.”

Anyone that has ever served in the military, especially in the Army, knows that an awsh$t will wipe out all attaboys. The good general has just learned that once again, with a really big awsh$t. But everyone should take note. the general did the honorable thing and resigned. If only others in Washington had enough honor to do the same. I wish the general the best.

As for the others in Washington, especially members of Congress, I have this to say. You are all lacking in honor. You all have insufficient honor to do the one and only thing you took an oath to do and that was to protect and defend the Constitution, from all enemies, foreign and domestic. You allow members of congress and others to be above the law. You don't even question the president when he violates the constitution and you have therefore performed miserably in doing the only thing you took an oath to do. And the reason? You all lack sufficient honor to bind you to the oath you took. If you had any honor at all, you would all resign.

General Petraeus certainly explained it in the right words, "I SCREWED up Royally". HRH. Literally.

The CIA Intelligence Director was feeling great Power. Who knows if he was the Director of the CIA at all times? Was the US in danger from Terrorists, and who was monitoring the Terrorists in other Countries who wanted to kill US Citizens, including wiping the US off the face of the Map?

There is a connection between Benghazi Gate and Petraeus; Government Officials that will never be heard..

I can just hear the old line of an Adulterer, "It Just Happened", the usual excuse.

The "Dave Petraeus" within caused this problem: he and we have to be real about this.

As for Brigadier General James Shelton (he has the greater need to be real), I can't believe that he can make comments like:

Broadwell...was “more savvy than Dave about the nature of the things that they got involved with.”

“She’s not a kid. In a lot of ways I think she knows more about the world than Dave – I’m talking about sex,” he said.

Come on General! Dave Petraeus is a 60 year old man and was a General too - in charge of hundreds of thousands of peoples lives and things that affect hundreds of millions more!

I have to wonder just how good of a friend this retired Brig. Gen. James Shelton is if he feels it is OK to disclose the content of a private and personal letter to the news media. I certainly hope that he cleared this with Patraeus before he did it, otherwise I would say that Shelton is no friend at all. You do not go around giving the news media letters from friends in which they are talking to you about what must have been a very painful and humiliating experience for them. I give Patraeus a lot of credit for how he has handled this situation. He has demonstrated a level of class and acceptance of his own responsibility for what happened that is sorely lacking not just in Washington, but in the population in general. Patraeus has not tried to blame anyone else for his downfall, he has accepted that he is responsible for his own actions. Despite the poor judgement he demonstrated in having this affair, I have to say he is still definitely one of the honorable people in Washington.

There is nothing honorable about General Patraeus, he is a pathetic military strategist, a disaster to the thousands who have died and the tens of thousands injured and maimed by his pathetic idea of "nation building". Only a total idiot would believe that you can build a "nation" when these people are religious nutcases. Yeah, lets build a nation where none existed before, aka Afghanistan. His "surge" in Afghanistan sure has worked, a terrible mess. The Iraq surge only worked because the Sunni's were sick of being pushed around by the Shia. In Afghanistan it has failed miserably, costing many lives. Great idea General, turn our SOLDIERS into "trainers", into "driving instructors", into "baby sitters" for religious kooks. You can't make people better than they are, that is a fools fantasy, and this General sure as hell was, a damn fool.

I appreciate your service but I despise your leadership, and go sell your moral high ground to your wife David. You are a pathetic old man who's legacy will be exposed as the failure it is. If they found out you lied I hope they court martial you, and send you to prison.

I have to say he is still definitely one of the honorable people in Washington

Then your bar is set awfully low my friend, he is a lying con man.

The only reason Petraeus is sorry is because he got caught. He had a girlfriend for 8 months!!! Why isn't she honorably or dishonorably discharged with clessified files in her house.

Petraeus is very sorry, but do you hear him say anything about loving his wife.

His friend's release of the letter is his PR firm's first step in him making a comeback. He needs Holly on board to do this, then he'll probably dump her a year from now when he gets his career back.

Holly, I feel complete admiration for you. He doesn't deserve you.

Seems a lot of guys in DC have zipper problems. I don't believe for a minute that Petraeus would have resigned if the FBI had not caught him through the e-mails and Gmail account. Guys like that think they are above the law. By resigning he saved his pension; there really wasn't anything honorable about it.

Funny how he writes something nice about his wife to his friend when previously he refers to her as plain and ugly. Personally, I hope she dumps him. He won't regain his position of power; his career is over.

Seriously, we're all making too big a deal out of this. It is a big deal, of course, because the media made it so. They tell us that we're supposed to be just plain outraged. The guy worked closely with a good looking women and, its hard to say no to that sweet stuff. Does that mean he is not doing his job effectively? Because of this, did he really put the country in danger? The only thing that made that more possilble is the exaggerated outrage that the press told us we should feel and, like sheep, we agreed. We need to grow up.

Wel I need to say this, my husband and I spent 20 years in the military. I am telling you now, it's a rare, very rare man, from inlisted to General, that will not dally aound, when they are overseas away from there families. They may not have an affair, but they still cheat on the wife at home. The high ranking Generals are not the only ones who have secret clearances to secret stuff., that could be leaked to some affair . As one said , the only difference is he got caught. How many members of Senate and Congress, even obama's cabinet do you think could possible be having an afair with some one. I bet, if the truth be known, we all would be suprised. You guys out there who condemn this General, have you cheated on your wife or had an affair. Don't throw rocks at glass houses if you have. This is old news and why people continue to blog about this is pure stupidity, he is paying his dues, let it alone. Don't bother replying, I don't revisit any blogs I post on.

This is the thing that bothers me.

I really don't care if he fooled around, as long as no secrets were passed. Any affair is between him and his wife.

    BUT

It seems many are trying to lay this on Broadwell. He knew full well what he was doing. If he didn't, he wasn't qualified to be a General let alone in charge of the CIA.

That is if you believe god is omiscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent.

      #1.39 - Thu Nov 29, 2012 11:49 PM EST

I am happy to hear that his family is working through this troublesome time. This kind of behavior goes on more often than you think in the military. I was a military wife for 7.5 years to a Marine that is currently serving under our head general in Afghanistan. We just finalized our divorce two weeks ago and he is already engaged. Sad part is when our marriage started to dissolve, I went to his superiors and they did nothing. We were seperated for a year only because he deployed and they allowed him to use that time as seperation time. What bothers me is that you have these men and women that deploy and are fighting for our country, but then you have a few that call home talking about how bad they have it and how much danger they are in and the whole time they are sleeping with someone else.

This whole thing will just fade away as they all do and the cheating will continue on.

He is now remarried and they have a beautiful little girl, (in the eyes of this Grandpa), and he has a great little stepson.

Sandy, Missouri - I expect that you really do know a "whack job" when you see one don't you?

Petraeus was set up to take the fall for Benghazi - saw the light and resigned.

Hillary Clinton, a force to be reckoned with come the 2016 elections, said "the buck stops here" and both she and Bill havn't been heard from since.

Boardwell was no more than an opportunist that knew the ropes. She was smart but miles over her head to be used as a wedge in the resignation of Petraeus.

Now - enter Rice as a mouthpiece for Goober - taking the heat for the coverup and is being dubbed as first in line for the next Secretary of State.

Goober apologises again for some obscure to nonexistant video tape.

This is politics at it's best folks.

Glenn - well said, but unfortunately, many people, including quite a few on this blog, wouldn't know how to separate "honor" from crap because they have never been taught or required to live by it. Petraus did, as have thousands of soldiers in the military that are put into harms way, experience long and frequent separations from their families, and don't have the luxury of being a "player". THAT is exactly what Broadwell was. Try being stationed in a combat zone for multiple tours or in areas of the world where sex is as cheap as a hamburger. Try putting up with the stress of a job where your decisions might result in people getting killed - and do. Jobs like that have a way of damaging the intimacy in marriage and often-times the closest ear is someone that wants to get ahead by any means they can - even by writing a book. Nobody is perfect, and Petraus gave in and did something he should not have. Then he DID do the honorable thing unlike Clinton and many others that do NOT have ANY honor. Cathy S - go back to watching soap operas; you don't have a clue! Dawg Pound - same with you. I served 33 years in the military and recently retired. I never heard the term "sport fu_king". If anything, the military is less sexually active that the civilian population given they often-times find themselves in locations without privacy, prone to sexual harrassment charges if they look a female soldier cross-eyed, have no access to "watering holes" and places to be a "player", and are unable to just bang away at one's content. Lest I forget - sex is usually the farthest thing on your mind when you're trying to stay alive in a war.

You need to think harder and more deeply,

Are you saying God made robots?, or did he create mankind with the ability to make choices? We need to exercise more willpower, or volition if you will, instead of giving into our base natures, or the lusts and desires of the flesh. It is a matter of overcoming, and we need God's help with that. BTW, God is present and he sees and hears everything.

I can see the rehabilitation of Petraeus has begun, and the generals are closing ranks to support him--starting with his old chum Gen. That is NOT likely to happen :( I am sure she's accustomed to his infidelities. He hasn't served all of these years and kept his pants on :( He was just never CAUGHT before this. I feel sorry for her. Her marriage and their personal troubles are FODDER for the rest of us :( On the other hand, he WAS a high-ranking OFFICIAL in CHARGE of the protection of the USA. It's ok if a Democratic President does it and lies about it, but not ok for a Republican Military man who never lied about it and resigned because of it.

            It's called a double standard....

Holly hasnt chosen a high road, she's chosen to stay on Team Petraeus hoping it keeps her on the Rich Road.

Jessica: I don't think Holly needs the "rich road". She is extremely wealthy in her own right. She most likely is thinking to the future for her children and wants to keep the family intact.

Dave Petraeus is a 60 year old man and was a General too - in charge of hundred's of thousands of peoples lives and things that affect hundred's of millions more!

              It's time to move on........

*General Petraeus has ruined his reputation as a primo military officer and leader of U.S. government

*The woman involved should pay the price for her part i all of this for many years to come.

*The military should decide where it truly stands on sex and adultery. If you set rules, they should be understood and respected by all concerned.

I'm very saddened at this incident....but Gen. Petraeus is taking the heat for so many other others before him for similar violations of moral ethics and military discipline but never got discovered.

Then why did the President and his Administration lie about Benghazi if it wasPetraeus' fault? On the contrary, they used this affair to hold over Petraeus' head so that he too would lie to the American people about what happened.

They never lied. The only people who are lying are those who are putting out the LIE about the Obama Administration lying. If you actually go to reputable news sources and not those like Fox or any other corrupt right wing talking head, you will find that they never lied. But then again TRUTH and FACTS were never something the republican party would allow to get in the way of their agenda.

Sandy, someone lied to Ambassador Rice, and she in turn spread that lie on 5 news channels - not just FOX. The administration at that point knew it was terrorists and they let her lie. The President said one day it was a terrorist act and then said on another day it was the video. How is that not a lie? Secretary Clinton said it was the video that incited the mob at the memorial for the murdered. How is that not a lie?

Again, WRONG. They didn't lie to her. They gave her information that WAS NOT CLASSIFIED. What is so hard for people on the right to understand about that? The intelligence community didn't want to tip their hand about what they knew. So they restricted what could be said while they were still trying to sort things out and still investigating. All of that is there if you take the time to look for it. It all came out in the hearings so far.

It's no different than the police not giving out ALL of the information about a murder to the public so they can more easily catch the murderer. Police routinely hold back information about a crime. In this manner they can use the unreleased information to trip up the people who committed the crime because only those people would know that information.

The CIA used the SAME TACTICS AS POLICE DEPARTMENTS and you people on the right are not screaming at the police for not giving out all information when a heinous crime occurs. You people are the right are not screaming for the head of the spokesperson for police departments when they only give out information they are ALLOWED to give out by the police.

You guys are totally hypocritical and seemingly delusional in thinking that federal government should give out information that could hurt their investigations when local police departments don't even do that. The republicans are only looking for something to beat on the president and they don't care how lame, stupid or lacking in critical thinking it might be. Hell, if republicans thought they could make the president look bad by claiming he doesn't lift the toilet seat when he pees they would. They are that damned silly and petty.

you tell em Sandy, funny how the actual language is on tape, but the "lie" just keeps on getting repeated. No one actually said exactly what prompted the attack, it was just preliminary possibilities, but you know how the right can say something enough times and people just accept it as truth. Unbelievable.

Just take that candy and slide down the slippery slide to Hell. You may have to climb a few steps to reach the heavens of God. But the demons rule today and the candy is being handed out like water for your great thirst. thirst for any sick and perverted Idea. Eat up generation of vipers your time is at hand, just like our salvation lives. Again I say to people of faith, right out of the bible where you tickle so many ears. Cry out LOUD, Spare not these heathens, lift up your Voices like a great Trumpet and show this wicked country their sins, their transgressions. Do you seek God in his guidance or only seek God for your selfish needs and conforming too. We shall build on this wasted place and if you turn away today from doing Gods pleasures in this, He shall not honor you when you call, when you cry out in pain, the plagues of this country will be your portion also. Do not turn away your voices, make your feet swift in the coming wars and do not speak your own words, YOUR Fathers WORD is so holy. You people of faith should be building up the greatest army and that does not happen with silenced voices..ACT NOW, then shall God delight in YOU and you in him as this world fails and falls into damnation, The coming of our great KING and not some dictator that buys his elections..Pigs all of them

So what Shelton is trying to do is blame the woman. Let me see. So he had straight boring missionary sex with his long standing wife or stop having sex with her. He probably got oral sex, anal fingering, and other exciting normal sexual things less boring less WASPish people enjoy. Maybe some spanking? maybe he finally got to perform nice cunnilingus? Clearly sex is fun and he was not getting any fun at home. Is that why Shelton is blaming her?

If you read about this, everyone involved made a huge mistake but, the real mistake that they made was alllowing a civillian liason person in the name of jill Kelley to get anywhere around them. Broadwell was trying to keep Kelley out of the political circle of Generals and her e-mails are what started this whole investigation to begin with.
