'Bow and arrow-type' attack leaves 3 dead in Casper, Wyo., including 2 in college classroom, officials say

Dan Cepeda / Casper Star-Tribune

Students and faculty mingle outside the police line on the Casper College campus Friday, Nov. 30, as police investigate a homicide.

Updated at 7:11 p.m. ET: A man killed a woman in Casper, Wyo., on Friday and then headed to the campus of Casper College, where he killed a man in front of students during a science class before killing himself, police said.

Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The man used "an edged weapon" — earlier described by police, college officials and eyewitnesses as a "bow and arrow-type" weapon — in all three killings, including his own suicide, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

Walsh wouldn't identify any of the victims, including the killer, pending notification of their families. College officials said the man who was targeted in the classroom was a faculty member, whom they also wouldn't immediately identify.

Walsh did say that all three victims were adults who knew one another and that the killer wasn't a current student at the college. The incident didn't appear college-related, he said.

The man appeared to have acted alone. "There is no one at large, and there is no threat of violence," Walsh said Wednesday afternoon.

Police found the two men on the third floor of the community college's physical science center, where they had been called to investigate a "traumatic injury" at about 9 a.m. (11 a.m. ET), Walsh said. Shortly after they arrived, they received a similar call involving an address about two miles from campus, where they found the dead woman.

All told, 33 local, state and federal officers responded at the campus, which was locked down temporarily while police checked for other suspects, authorities said. An alert on the community college's website said that all classes and activities had been canceled and that counselors were being provided for the colleges faculty, students and staff.

Casper College is a two-year community college of 4,400 students in Wyoming's second-largest city.

The school has a small security team on campus, but they're not armed.

"It's such a small town that Casper police is very close," Fujita said.

This is a good example of how it really doesn't matter what weapon you take away-

if someone wants to kill they are going to do it, whether it be gun, knife, bows and arrows, run someone over...whatever it may be. People can argue all they want but the truth is-- taking a weapon away isn't going to do crap...there is always going to be another option.

Note how the small security staff are unarmed...well, the bad guys are almost always armed...if you're not going to allow responsible citizens to carry concealed weapons within the letter of the law you should provide ARMED security...and who does something like this with archery equipment? My condolences to the victims,

Zach, that is a HUGE drama lama statement on your part. We have one of the largest "reported" murder rates. In pakistan you can get away with murder by saying someone blasphemed, then it isn't murder, it is justice. Do you honestly think Iran, North Korea and the like report their murder number accurately? I know that france has been accused for years of monkeying with their numbers, look at the official murder rates in Mexico then go down to El Paso for a week and count how many murders are reported on the news every night, the official number at the end of the year fall way short.

It should bother everyone. The problem is not with the weapon but the moral decay that has pervaded modern society. The lack of a moral compass is what caused the attack. I would like to see the data that backs up your statement," America has one of the biggest murder rates in the world". I think you are very mistaken if you consider the per capita rate. The last time I checked the US was 18th followed by gun control crazy UK at 21st and France at 22nd. Russia where there is no armed populace comes in at 6, so your correlation between the number of firearms and murders holds very little water.

This really is a sad deal as there were deaths and these people all have families of some sort. The other tragedy though is that the left will think they somehow have to act to limit peoples access to another type of weapon until we finally become like one of those futuristic shows where people are dominated by their government instead of a government ran by the people. Obama's administration is all about taking away privileges/rights and giving away money to get the blind nod of agreement. Tragic.... as usual one or two will ruin it for millions. Go ahead all you anti gun advocate simpletons give away everyone's privs until you have none of your own. Too bad you don't understand people are the problem here, including those like yourselves. This person, by choosing to use a quiet weapon, was able to enter the school grounds, and murder without attracting the normal attention people expect when killing.Because their weapon was unusual. Folks didn't pay attention to it. Why? A bow and arrow had never been used before to kill on campus.

My son is a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms. He goes to different types of schools from elementary level to college doing demonstrations about life as a Knight fighting in the Middle Ages. Often with authentically created chain-mail,helmet,medieval clothing and real sword with shield. Frequently he brings along a fighting partner. Sometimes he dresses when he arrives, other times wears some under coat, wearing the sword.

In all the years he has carried the sword without the costume worn, not once has anyone ever stopped him, questioned him, given him a second notice or paid any attention to what he was doing. He made the comment, that had he decided to harm anyone in a building, he easily could have, and walked away afterwards. People just didn't pay him any mind at all. Whether it was a college campus, high school, middle school or elementary. He found that really disturbing. He said he thought it was because he looked like he knew what he was doing there and had a purpose. I told him he had a friendly face and no body had been killed by a sword in America for a long time. But as soon as one was, he would become the prime suspect immediately.

We are used to routines and hearing about shootings happening on campuses has gotten lots of attention in recent years.Although it has happened in past decades before. So someone deciding to use an arrow to kill others really isn't expected. People might think it is being used in a project or some other purpose because no previous murders have occurred.

Most of us don't think outside of the box constantly, so no whistles and bells go off. We don't think like killers, or terrorists. It is a different mentality and world perspective. Living everyday with our eyes looking for others who may behaving in an odd way, is not normal nor comfortable for most of us. We are after all, creatures of habit. No doubt there may be some students on that campus asking themselves if they could have or should have noticed.

We are only human and can't stop those who are determined to harm others. But appreciating those around us more can elevate our awareness of what is going on just enough to perhaps make a small difference each day in ways we might never imagine.

Zack, I doubt that America even has the most murders in the world, let alone the highest rate! If you compare the numbers of murders to the numbers of population, I think you would find you are far from right. Right now. England, France and other European conutries have a much higher rate. Another thing, the places in the US which do have the highest murder rates is in cities which the possession of firearms is illegal. Like Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Boston. Australia has found out was the result would be when firearms are outlawed. Violent crime there has risen over 2000 percent since they outlawed firearms. The reason for more violence these days is the lack of respect for others that parents are not teaching their children! There is no consequences for misbehaving now as a child. That and video games. After a while one gets bored with the video opponents, let's go find someone to kill for real! On TV and in the movies, you see people being killed and yet tomorrow they are back in another movie! Kids don't realize, once you are dead, you are dead! The sticking of a child in a corner for 15 minutes teaches themn nothing! Bears, wolves, cats, large and small almost all animals discipline their young. And yet now, "oh don't discipline your child, it will harm them mentally!" I don't mean that you have to beat a child, but sometimes a small amount of corporal punishment is needed to get their attention. A slap to the butt never hurt a child, or a slight slap of the hand. Something that gives a slight discomfort that the child will remember. You can talk to a child of 1-3 all you want and all it do is get YOU tired of talking. Frankly I think a ping pong paddle in some schools would do wonders! right in front of the rest of the class too! Again, I don't mean beating the heck out of the student. Just a few swats to the seat of the pants done by a teacher of the same sex. Also, more praise is needed to be given to a child when they do well also! It's alot like training a pet. Rewards when they do good, punishment when they do bad! And listen to your child! They have problems everyday just the same as you. Theirs might seem trivial to you, but your's might seem the same to them. Teach them responsibility now while you can as after a certtain point, it's too late!

At one time in this country (not really that long ago) kids used to bring their guns to school during deer hunting season

I was a member of our high school "rod & gun" club. We brought rifles and shotguns on campus in our vehicles and into our meeting area which was a shop class. The principle gave us permission. That was many years ago however.

We also had archery as a P.E. class in high school, which actually got me started in it when otherwise I was just a gun person. We never shot anyone, bow or gun, nor even thought about it. Fights and anger were taken out in the field after school.

So yes, what makes today different than 20 or 30+ years ago? Society and no accountability, that's what.

Like some here had the IQ to note; it aint the weapon, it's the people. Once we solve that problem, the root, then it won't matter how how many people have guns (or bows (or violins)) ;) But as long as most people are ignorant and/or plain stupid then things will never change...

As one poster mentioned; kids used to bring guns to school so they could hunt/plink on the way there and back. Yet surprisingly there were no problems... Hmmm.... I lived in an area like that, and I carried either a .22 or a shotgun. Considering I'm 47 it wasn't all that long ago. Of course the area was 100% white, now that there's different races everywhere you obviously can't do that. For those who think all races are equal in every way, or that they mix well, you people are idiots. How is it fair that white people should be stripped of guns because other races can't handle them? I hear they're also trying to say IQ tests are grossly inaccurate and shouldn't be used because blacks score so low on them. Why can't people accept that different races are in fact different and they need their own set of rules and should be segregated? I know that sounds cold, but it is what it is, and why should whites suffer because others can't behave or support themselves? How is it my problem that a typical black family is fatherless and on welfare? Why should the Ant support the Grasshopper? Not my problem! Segregate and watch crime against whites drop like a rock! Segregate finances and watch white America become successful again. Again, why should we pay because other races are inept, low brow, and lazy? America is struggling to succeed, but we're being pulled down by these people. These people also like to multiply like rats, and our liberals have made it so easy for them by having successful people pay for their children.... Thanks liberal, you are as much the root of the problem as the minoritys themselves.

Someone mentioned bringing rifles to school further up in this thread. Right now, my 12 year old daughter is on her rifle team and actually shoots those rifles in the school (on a range with supervision, of course).

I just recently bought her a rifle, too, and it really isn't unusual around here for kids to have their own rifle when they are twelve.

Incidentally, there is very little crime in our area and people respect one another, unless you get into the nearest city, then there is some gun violence among the gangs. Almost everyone I know has at least one gun in their home for self defense and there are very few home invasions or burglaries, because even the stupidest criminals know what's on the other side of the door.

Compact cross-bow most likely. Sounds like many gun supporters are a bit clueless on other weapons. You sure won't be killing your self with a regulation bow and arrow.

Those small cross-bows will do more damage than a bullet.

I learned about these high torque bows from a friend of mine - a convicted felon, he has lots of guns too.

schoolyard,

If the suspect was born in the USA, he IS a native American.

I am a native American of English and Irish descent. You are a native American of Siberian descent, aka an American Indian, whose ancestors immigrated to what is now North America probably before any European immigrants (even though it appears that there was possibly a European migration to North America 1000 years before the Siberians arrived - still not proven but there is some evidence).

If there were any truly native Americans, they all either died out before or during the migration of Siberian immigrants, aka American Indians.

The energy industry took off and then the next thing you know is an influx of out of staters came running in for the rig jobs and along with them they brought all the big city crime with them. Mandating Licenses and Weapon Control should be a priority in this country as too many lives are taken by those who use their weapons to perpetrate violence only. And too many have weapons yet disrespect their use and dangers of such.

Yet I find it interesting, yet not surprising, that NBC news doesn't know their time zones or slots as evidently they must be too wound up in NYC to even look up proper times of crimes. If the incident happened at 9 am Wyoming time, then that would indicate that the time in NYC was 11am not 7am as reported.

Interesting perspective on this issue. So white people invaded the Americas and took the land from the natives that were already there by force--raped, murdered and abused them, stole their resources and drove them off their own land. Brought Africans to against their will to have them work as their slaves because they were too lazy to pick their own cotton themselves, so they had to spend resources bringing outside SLAVE labor from overseas, so they could beat and whip them into submission--kill off the smarter ones cuz we can't have a smart slave that knows how to read and figure out stuff they could use against their masters. And refused for YEARS to give ANY of those people ANY rights... But its the OTHER races that have issues with agression? And anyone that can't see that is ignorant to boot?

Take away guns, you get the crossbow. Take away the crossbow, you get the long bow. Take away the long bow, you the spear. Take away the spear, you get the knife. Take away the knife, you get the stone.

And as long as we're on a physical plane of existence, there's never going to be a shortage of stones.

The only real solution is for the human race to grow up and mature to the point that violence is no longer viewed as a viable solution to any conflict.

Bows and crossbows are extremely effective weapons when skillfully used. Silence is the main thing. Given some of the broadheads and especially the expanding heads available for arrows and maybe even crossbow bolts today, I think I'd rather have someone shooting at me than a skilled archer trying to kill me. With arrows and bolts, half the time you don't know you've been hit until you see you're bleeding all over the place, and by then, it's almost too late!

Yes, because weapons (or objects that could potentially be used as weapons) that take considerable skill and conscious effort to be used effectively, have a lenthy (compared to automatic and semi-automatic firearms) reload process every single time they're fired and often rely on your own muscle power for the impact of their force are exactly 100% the same thing and pose the exact same kind of problems or safety issues in our society as a weapon that takes very little skill or effort to use, fire on their own power at supersonic speeds with a force that's significantly greater than what can be provided human musculature alone and can even be used accidentally with no conscious effort at all. Yes, I can see how guns are definitely not an issue if we already have sticks and stones that could technically be used to kill someone as well.

The problem is that we lack a society. We stay inside too much. Kids don't socialize; at best they might have a "play date" once or twice. I can remember when people got together and did their hobbies together, and also did some of their hobbies for charity (gardening a park, knitting toys and blankets for children's hospitals, woodwork to build playground equipment, etc.). This can happen again; it doesn't take riches, but organization and attitude. These days, if we let anybody get involved in clubs at all, it is only the children. Adults often do not have enough time for clubs.

I can remember the first kinds of attacks, not in schools, but in cities and workplaces, were all related to a person who never spoke to anybody, was quiet and worked hard, but one day just cracked. There were no social outlets for the perpetrators. Everybody focused on what could be done to include more people in activities, but after the news died down, nothing was done. Instead, people have become more isolated; in teens and young adults the result is worse. Add to that the lack of prospects for jobs. But there is also an attitude, maybe from TV, but probably just from interaction with others, that life is not that important. People don't care if they hurt each other's feelings (look at internet discussions); people don't care if somebody is physically harmed in traffic accidents (they don't slow down in a fog); ultimately, people are more likely to kill. Agatha Christie solved some real murders in her time, and she said that the society she lived in post-World War I, where people had moved around and felt more isolated and lost, added to a great rise in murders. She also said that if they get away with it once, they will almost always do it again.

We have many serial killers that are never prosecuted: look at the entire tobacco industry executives. The attitude of death being acceptable is too prevalent; as long as there are people getting away with murder, we will have a high murder rate.

Holy crap Todd! Where are you getting these statistics from?! You think there are no white people on welfare or food stamps??? Wow, I am so shocked at your comments, and truthfully is saddens me that there are still people in this country that believe this crap the way you do. After all this time, all these years, and you want America to move backwards and segregate? I'll just end this comment right now before I get myself banned. I will however say this, you need to get yourself some education. I'm not saying this disrespectfully.

VisionStorm: What we did in the past was treat them as they should be treated, it's the people who allow them to live among us who have made the mistake. I personally believe slaves should not be used, even blacks, but then remember who sold us those black slaves, other blacks.... So again I point the finger at them...

Obviously you're a liberal so I can't expect you to understand, but when you watch blacks and mexicans take over and ruin your city jsut as they do with every city they move into, then maybe even you will be unable to deny the fact that are not like whites. Whites create beautiful functional cities, mex and blacks cannot, they can only move into our cities (thanks to liberals), and thus destroy them. Name one single city which was created by and populated by blacks or mex that is successful and/or beautiful, just one.... Whites create, they destroy, it's an endless cycle. Guess which race can survive and be successful without the others? Which races rely on whites and their tax money? This nation would be so much better if it were white only. Crime, drugs, violence, welfare, all these things that other countries mock us over would be a thing of the past. Those countries don't have blacks to screw up their country, but again that's why they laugh at us, they would never allow it!

FamousAmos; I am educated, I am also very much above average in intelligence. Maybe that's why I can see the obvious which is unclear to you? Sure white people are on welfare, but if you care to take the time to go into a welfare office you won't see a white face. My area is probably 60% white (used to be 100% and virtually no crime btw), now it's maybe 15% black and the rest mexicans. There are NO white people in the welfare office in my town, except those who work there... If you segregated finances there would be no way the black tax money could cover their welfare costs, let alone all the other expenses they incur, like prison costs. They're animals, call them what they are; animals... Sure many are intelligent, and many work and can live normal lives, but as a whole, as a race they're not like white people...

      Todd,

STFU. You are not helping anyone with racism. Yes blacks do commit more crime proportionatily, and collect more in welfare, but saying that they are animals, should be treated badly, etc, makes you worse.

Many stereotypes are true for all races, but judging an individual on the actions of the whole is inherently wrong, and in comlete opposition to the very basic tenants of conservatism, which I assume you subscribe too.

While I do agree with you that many of liberal thought refuse to accept the fact that there are different classes of people, there are just as many low class whites as other races. It comes down to how you choose to live. And while the percentages of low-lives from some races may be higher, there is scum in all.

Not that you need ammo, but 24/7 Wall street ranked the states by best managed and what was a trend was the states with the fewest people also had the largest percentage white and were also the best managed states as far as debt, taxes per capita, unemployment and a couple of others. I don't know if it has to do with race or whether they can come to agreement easier with fewer people.

queenie, thanks for the link.. it shows pretty clearly there that he U.S. has one of the lowest rates in the world for murder. 4.2 (per 100,000).. far lower than most of the rest of the world, particularly in the denser population areas. And as stated, many of the "third world" countries have customs and laws that designate many murders as justified, so the reported rates of 20+ are still low.

Most of western europe is lower though. Perhaps you socialist gun haters should move there.. they are all looking for immigrants to fill their workforce and so far only the muslims are moving in, particularly in Germany and France.

My prayers go out to the families of this tragedy in Casper.. my girlfriend is on her way there now for hockey with her kids.. I hope all is safe there.

The problem is that we have developed a culture where the answer is violence. Killing people used to be looked at as a horrible crime but our society is becoming desensitized to the point that it only seems to matter when it is a well publicized murder, mass murder, or someone close to us. Not all of us feel that way but with the number of gangs and others who have no respect for human life it is becoming very scary. A 93 year old woman in Lodi, California (which is a relatively small community) was beaten nearly to death in a home invasion on a Sunday afternoon. They took a couple of tvs and a dvd player. Tell me what kind of resistance a 93 yr old woman was going to put up against multiple invaders. They beat her for the fun of it. She had lived in her home for more than 40 years. Really a shame that somewhere along the line we have quit teaching our kids to respect life. There were always a few bad apples but that number seems to have grown out of proportion with out population growth most likely due to the relatively minor punishment they receive IF they are caught.

If you had a clue you would turn your friend in as a convicted felon is exactly who should not and can not legally own a weapon. If you took weapons away from those illegally owning them you wouldn't have a tenth of the problem and you appear to be one of those anti's who is clueless enough to not even know to turn in a felon you know that has a gun... dugh...(that would be illegal for a felon to own). I think most people understand a crossbow would likely be the weapon here especially if he killed himself with it unless he fell on his arrow. Most gun owners know a bit about archery as well, for me it is my hunting weapon of choice.... legally owning of course.

Actually we could go back and say you are of African descent since the first people come from Africa not Europe. And there is no such thing as Native Irish or English. They migrated from Africa.

My point is what gives you the idea that Native Americans think that they are Siberian? My ancestors have been here for thousands of years. Not hundreds. And Native American is a very broad term. To describe many different people that where here before the Europeans came. As far back as 60,000 years So they are the first peoples of South Central and North America. With many different Tribes.

Well, one can't pin this one on guns, but it does in the most unfortunate of ways demonstrate the argument that it's the people who kill people and not the guns. If they took arrows away (though it said bow and arrow LIKE, not bows and arrows), something like fan knives would probably be next, or ninja stars perhaps.

Ultimate it is the consciousness of these types of people, one's dealing with, itself...

Although I completely support your line that parents not paying attention to kids, but even I could go on a rampage (and that wouldn't be my parents fault then), but I'm competent enough to know the repercussions. I think it's not so much that they play violent video games, Brokinarrow, as they play video games, watch tv, and are online during most of their free time. Not only does it mean they aren't getting the right input from parents, but it also means that are losing out on the experiences we get playing face-to-face as children.

It used to be we HAD to learn to get along because the other person was right there in our faces. It HURT if they punched you. Now they miss out on that and others seem to be a distant concept instead of a real person.

I clearly agree with UDunnoBro. We should regulate everything more.

Kitchen knifes, baseball bats, box cutters, saving razors, sling shots, bows & arrows, guns, tazers, pepper spray, led pipes used to build pipe bombs, amonia, fertilizer, saw blades, gasoline, kersoene, rocks, nail guns, staplers, scissors and anything which can either be used as a weapon or help you make a weapon.

Let's regulate any lathes ore metals, lumber, chissels, oils, sanding paper, glues, sprays, caulk, axes, chain saws and even large trees.

Look I'm not saying guns are not dangerous but so is a 2x4 or a kitchen knife on the wrong hands. Clearly there should be some kind of background check into the sanity of folks who purchase any weapon. However, most criminals don't usually purchase weapons legally which means any regulation doesn't affect criminals.

Just like you can't prevent some crazy person going around killing with a tire iron, there isn't any regulation which will stop crazy people from killing others with guns or any other type of weapon.

@Lisa - Yeah I can agree with that. When my friends and I were gaming back in high school, the only real way we could do multiplayer was to have everyone bring over their xboxes and TVs to someones house and hook everything up, so it was definitely more sociable that way.

Parents should definitely regulate the time their kids are allowed to play games and such, like you said, make sure they are getting that face to face time with their friends.

I live in Canada. We average 600 murders a year. 1/3 are firearms related, 1\3 are knife\stabbing related, and the other 1\3, well it is anything else laying around the house like Vada mentioned. There are quite a few ways to kill someone if you want to.

Condolences to the affected families and community.

                    Sick of the Situation:

You bought your 12 year daughter a rifle are you also teaching her that violence is wrong. I doubt it. shooting lessons or not, such is pretty stupid in these modern times of gun violence offered by children who are raised in the midst of the wunderful world that Guns are ok! They are to protect you, so shoot first ask questions later..........................Sorry but even the majority in Wyoming has progressed past this attitude!

Video games-- are not to blame it's bad parenting or maybe the have a screw loose. I found that video games can give you something to keep out of trouble. Today kids have way too much time on their hands and not enough constructive things to do, parks are being run down, schools with fewer after school activities.

Could be that some single parent is working 2 jobs to try and afford to raise their kids leaving them little time to ensure their kids are learning and function as a resposible person. Plus there's a growing number of people who think unskilled jobs should pay low wages and that's just fine. We'll when your kids are hurt by someone who has grown up in this type of situation then maybe you realize it is not FINE.

myself and everyone I know was raised around guns.. We learned to shoot and to respect the guns at an early age, and I don't know anyone who has killed someone with a gun. I bought my 14 year old and my 15 year old their first guns two years ago for Christmas. Matter of fact we were out shooting the other day.. brought a few friends and had about 15 various guns.. shot off about 800 rounds of ammo. Blew the heck out of a box of old hard disk drives I needed to destroy, as well as a few dozen golf balls.. Fun to shoot and good practice.

I suppose someone who has grown up villifying guns will never understand. Guns are a tool, as was the crossbow this murderer used. I have a shop full of tools that are more dangerous and just as potentially violent (in the hands of an unstable person) as any gun. Matter of fact, I use what is perhaps the most deadly weapon of all time every day - my car. I can do more damage with it than any gun.

I am 41 and have played video games since I was 13. I own enough guns and ammunition to wreak some pretty crazy havoc. Yet they stay unloaded in their safe until I take them out to shoot, and then it is in a safe environment under controlled circumstances. I have never witnessed an accidental discharge, but I have witnessed dozens of car accidents. I have seen people hurt themselves or others with all sorts of tools, and aside from a stray shell going down the back of a shirt, I have not seen any injuries at the range or while hunting. I know it happens, but it happens to people who are not careful, just like car accidents happen to people who are not careful. I had a gun pulled on me once, and the man who put the gun in my face never pulled the trigger. But 10 years later he did indeed murder.. with a knife.

It may sound like it is easier to pull a trigger and kill than it would be to do it with a knife or other tool, but if you have any kind of sense of consequence, it is not any easier. The only difference is how much physical exertion it requires.

It takes someone with a serious issue to murder or attempt to murder, it isn't about video games. If anything, raising a child in an overly protected environment would be the cause of more murders, simply because of a disconnect between action and consequence. You can't go out into the world alone until you are hardened by some facts of life..

Really? You can run over 60 people, killing 12 and seriously wounding 48 more with a car? In about a minute?

Since you brought up the car comparison, let's take a closer look, shall we? Before you are allowed behind a wheel, you have to

[a] take a test that ensures you have the knowledge to operator a car, and the laws you have to follow while doing so.

[b] pay a registration fee and have a unique identifying tag on your car so that if your car is ever used in the commission of a crime it can be identified.

[c] pay insurance so that if your car or you cause any damage, those damaged can be re-imbursed.

So I take it you are willing to accept the same restrictions on having a gun?

What people like you can never understand is that we don't "vilify guns" We vilify the callousness of those who don't care the death that indiscriminate and near-anonymous ownership of guns causes. We are sick of turning on the TV and once or twice a year being horrified by the carnage and then further horrified at the lack of compassion from our fellow human beings.

Here's an example of what would happen if guns weren't so readily available. We keep getting told "criminals will always kill."

                    Yes, this is true.

Someone gets really mad and kills 2 or 3 people, not 20 or 30. Killing anyone is terrible. This is a horrible crime, but it is still better to have saved 9 other lives.

Meanwhile wacko libbies argue about control and regulations when the answer is to be found in restoring family values... something we've lost in the last few years... this tragedy will replay itself many times over in the coming months and years, and it has nothing to do with the weapon of choice! Hell, maybe free contraception and same sex marriages are what we need... in a couple of generations all the bozos will be extinct....

Emily, why are you being so hateful? "The man used "an edged weapon" — earlier described by police, college officials and eyewitnesses as a "bow and arrow-type" weapon — in all three killings, including his own suicide, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said."

Nothing in the article states anything about shooting the teacher of the year in the head or about the killer stabbing himself to death. People are going by what they read in the article. Chill. Sheesh.

Really Margo? That's funny how people pick out events that happen to a certain group of people, and suddenly assume ALL of that state's people are looney.
Well, I was born and raised in Florida, and before all the young "special me" people started running amuck, we didn't have all this nonsense in Florida! It was a great place to live with LOVING, CARING neighbors, lovely highways and beautiful sunsets on top of clean oceans; not monsters and crazies. And might I add, that Florida is filled with people from ALL OVER the United States? So it's not FLORIDA the STATE that breeds loonies because unlike myself, most of them were not even born and raised in there.

Find yourself a new cow to milk, but before you do, would you kindly let us know where YOU live, so we can bash your home for a while?

@Byron Raum. I guess you missed much in the news lately. There were a couple of stories about seniors running into crowds with their cars this summer.

                            http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/29/us/california-school-crash/index.html

And mind you these were accidents not somebody actively trying to run people down.

I also remember from this summer after hearing audio of a security trainer for the 2012 Olympics saying not to worry to much about knives because how much harm could a person do with a knife really. Well this much harm evidently. And this happened not to long afer the security trainer made those comments.

                            http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-19091840

There have been gun rampages with less victims.

If someone really wants to do harm they will find a way. We could destroy all the guns and edged weapons tomorrow and I guarantee that there would shortly be a news story about somebody killing people with a stone lashed to a stick. We've been killing each other ever since we figured out how to use a branch or a bone as a club. Even if you took all the sticks away somebody would get eye gouged, beaten or strangled to death.

@Okicize. I hate to say it but I thought the same thing. I'm thinking some professor had an affair with the wrong guy's girlfriend. I'm not saying it's right but I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

                            @Calico. Where there's a will, there's way. It's really sad.

Poor Byron, aint got a clue.

Here are a couple anti gun countries, Japan & China, using knives and axes and GASP cars.

"The 2010 Chinese school attacks were a series of uncoordinated mass stabbings, hammer attacks, and cleaver attacks in the People's Republic of China beginning in March 2010. The spate of attacks left at least 21 dead and some 90 injured."

The Nanping school massacre (福建南平校园惨案) occurred at Nanping City Experimental Elementary School in the city of Nanping, Fujian Province, People's Republic of China, in which a man used a knife to kill eight children and seriously wound five others.[1] The incident occurred on March 23, 2010, around 7:20 am local time (UTC+8 ).[2] It was the first of the 2010 Chinese school attacks

Just a few hours after the execution of Zheng Minsheng in neighboring Fujian Province, in Leizhou, Guangdong another knife-wielding man named Chen Kangbing, 33 at Hongfu Primary School wounded 16 students and a teacher.

An attacker named Wu Huanming, 48, killed seven children and two adults and injured 11 other persons with a cleaver at a kindergarten in Hanzhong, Shaanxi on May 12, 2010

On 4 August 2010, 26-year-old Fang Jiantang slashed more than 20 children and staff with a 60cm knife, killing 3 children and 1 teacher, at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong province.

Aug 2, 2012 A teenager has been arrested after killing nine people and wounding four others in a knife attack in northeast China, state media reported Thursday. The 17-year-old, who was identified only by his surname Li, barged into the home of his girlfriend armed with a knife following an argument and killed two relatives of the girl, the Legal Daily said. As he left his girlfriend’s home in Liaoning province’s Xinbin county, he stabbed six more people to death and wounded five, it said. One of the injured died Thursday in hospital, the paper said. Li was arrested near the scene of the attack, late on Wednesday night, and was taken into custody, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Sept 28, 2012 An ax-wielding man burst into a day care center in China and attacked the children, killing three and wounding another 13 before police subdued him. The incident took place in China’s southern province of Guangxi.

The Osaka School Massacre took place on June 8, 2001, at Ikeda Elementary School, an elite primary school affiliated with Osaka Kyoiku University in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. At 10:15 that morning, 37-year-old former janitor Mamoru Takuma entered the school armed with a kitchen knife and began stabbing numerous school children and teachers. He killed eight children, mostly between the ages of seven and eight, and seriously wounded thirteen other children and two teachers.

The Akihabara massacre (秋葉原通り魔事件 Akihabara Tōrima Jiken?, lit. "Akihabara random attacker incident") was an incident of mass murder that took place on Sunday, June 8, 2008, in the Akihabara shopping quarter for electronics, video games and comics in Sotokanda, Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan.

At 12:33 p.m. JST, a man hit a crowd with a truck, eventually killing three people and injuring two; he then stabbed at least 12 people using a dagger (initially reported as a survival knife[1]), killing four people and injuring eight.[2][3][4][5]

The Oklahoma City bombing was a terrorist bomb attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Downtown Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. It would remain the most destructive act of terrorism on American soil until the September 11, 2001 attacks. The Oklahoma blast claimed 168 lives, including 19 children under the age of 6[1] and injured more than 680 people.

The Bath School disaster is the name given to three bombings in Bath Township, Michigan, on May 18, 1927, which killed 38 elementary school children, two teachers, four other adults and the bomber himself; at least 58 people were injured. Most of the victims were children in the second to sixth grades (7–14 years of age [1]) attending the Bath Consolidated School. Their deaths constitute the deadliest mass murder in a school in U.S. history and the third-deadliest massacre in U.S. history, behind the Oklahoma City bombing and the September 11 attacks.

Then the inevitable idiots wanting to treat guns like cars.

Do I need the governments permission to buy a car? No.

Do I need to buy the car from only certain people with licenses to sell cars? No.

Can I buy as many cars as I want each week/month/year. Yes

Can I buy small cars, big cars, slow cars, fast cars, cars that look dangerous? Yes

Can I buy Hummers virtually like the troops use? Yes.

Do I have to wait from 5 to 15 days to pick up my car. No

If I traded in one car for a newer model do I still have to wait five to ten days to pick the new one up. No

Can I modify my car to allow more fuel, more performance, or better cornering. Yes

Would I have to turn over to the government without compensation some models of automobiles that might be banned years after I buy them. No

Do I need a license to buy a car? No (in most states)

Can I buy a car at age 16? Yes.

Are driving lessons mandated in most high schools? Yes

Can I buy a car from anyone in any state? Yes.

Can I sell my car to anyone in any state? Yes

Can convicted felons buy, own or drive a car. Yes

In some places (e.g. NYC or New Jersey) would I first need a permit to buy from the police department which sometimes takes up to 2 years to obtain. No

In some cities (e.g. Washington D.C.) would I have to store your car partially disassembled. No

Do I need to register a car that I own? No (as long as I keep it on my own property)

Do I need a background check or waiting period to buy a car? No

Is my car held responsible if I misuse it? No

Would failure to register my car be a federal felony (prevents me from owning another one). No

Do I need to "safe store" my car even though many are stolen and used for criminal purposes? No

Will I lose my driver's license if I violate the law with my car? Most likely not

Can I legally drive my car into any state/city in the nation with every jurisdiction honoring my registration/license? Yes

Shall I go on? Or do you really, really want to treat guns like cars?

One more thing, since 92% of all killings by illegal use of a firearm are acknowledged by the US govt to be committed by career criminals, gang members, and suiciders, and then the Haynes vs US 390, 85, 1968 which affirms the 5th amendment right of no self incrimination, which means any such taxation/INSURANCE LIABILITY of felons wouldnt apply to them, explain again WTF you are going to do to make the felons pay for the liability insurance eh einstein, LOL!

I have a question: What in hell is, "A bow and arrow TYPE weapon?". How about a picture of this mysterious device. It sounds exotic maybe he bought it on E-Bay or perhaps Amazon.com...........

second person seriously injured. That person was taken into custody and may be a suspect.

Turns out it's harder to do a murder-suicide with a bow and arrow than he thought.

Use your big toe to hold the string, pull the bow to your face, (HERE COMES THE TRICKY PART) carefully use your other foot to grasp the arrow and place the string into the groove of the back of the arrow. Open your mouth and lightly place the arrow head on your tong-

I did, Randy, and I coped with it and I moved on. That doesn't mean I don't remember the pain, that doesn't mean I don't feel the emotional rollercoaster. I coped, I compartmentalized, and I carried on. There is something that deals with time and space to the event horizon as to how people feel about a certain incident. Clearly those that lost loved ones on the Titanic feel the pain and loss but that doesn't stop a comedian from making light of the event- especially if they made a movie about it- but everyone has different coping mechanisms. You are currently coping by posting what you just did- that is your method. But remember one thing: You are human. You are one person out of billions on this planet. WHO ARE YOU TO CURSE US WITH YOUR HOPES?!?!? There is only one entity that can judge us and he is not on this planet. Come down off your high horse; you are not the moderator, you do not have the moral or legal right to judge or limit my speech or anyone else on this thread or any other thread for that matter.

Murder occurs whether someone has empathy or not; perhaps your empathy is more visible than others but that doesn't mean others don't have empathy as to this event or, 9-11, or Pearl Harbor, or Virginia Tech, or Columbine, or any other future incident that will occur. Man is VERY efficient at destroying man; whether it be physical or mental.

The sooner you realize that, the sooner you realize that the 1st Amendment is for all Americans and not just you, the better off you will be.

Lastly, breathe, brother; you'll live longer.

                                      :-\

Suicide by crossbow isn't too hard to pull off, nor is it too hard to tell whodunit - as the bolt tends to over-penetrate and exit the body entirely, whereas being shot by a crossbow usually leaves the bolt still in the body.

Suicide by long bow (or composite or recurve) on the other hand, while not impossible, is one hell of a feat, and will, in most cases, either over-penetrate or leave the arrow sticking more out of the back half, whereas being shot by bow tends to leave the arrow sticking out of the front half.

And I can attest, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the weapon used in this incident is absolutely NOT my electromagnetic linear bow, as the device is still secure in my test facility, and I am replacing a capacitor bank on it as I type.

Besides, the bolts of my EML Bow are very distinct, being made of aluminum and tungsten, and any poor SoB shot by one of these will leave an entrail trail worthy of note, making any investigator go "WTF could have done THIS?"

It's called gallows humor, Randy. It's a coping mechanism. There is no real disrespect intended by these wisecrackers. Some of us crack wise when we're the one on the stretcher, with an IV inserted. That cute EMT might be the last girl I ever get to flirt with. Chances are, most of the guys making jokes about this trajedy, have also made jokes about their own tragedies, or in the face of what they believed to be their own certain death. It's a guy thing.

[o.o], Try knocking the arrow before you push the string down with your toes, instead of after. It's a little easier that way. I'm still having a problem getting any accuracy, while hopping around on one foot though. Let me know if you get that part figured out.

I could have really ragged on Randy, but I held my reserves in check. Gutless? Hardly. @!$%#? I've been called worse. Walk a mile in my shoes starting by sitting on a perch for a couple of days on the side of a mountain in Afghanistan and wait for the ambush that comes and then tell me if I am gutless.

I've been there and lost good friends- it is tragic and I do miss them, but I remember the good times I shared with them to keep me out of the dark memories. To fill in the gaps, I do use humor. Sorry to Randy if he does not accept it, but then again, it isn't his place to accept it or not.

Bow and arrows don't kill people..... People with bow and arrows kill people. I can see it now, all the anti-gun nuts screaming how this is just the next wave of killing "tools" and they should all be banned. Let's not stop until anything that can be used to kill someone is banned (bats, golf clubs, knifes, guns, bow and arrows) can't you all see how dangerous these items can be!!!!!! We need to step in and save the world from themselves.

Seriously, this is a pretty midevil way to go about killing someone. It is going to be interesting to get the whole story behind the why's and whatfore's.

Personally, I'd rather have someone come after me with a bow and arrow than a semi-automatic rifle.

I'm all for keeping anything that has an intended purpose like hitting a ball. Not so much for something that only has one purpose: to kill someone or something.

You know I find the lets ban everything argument rather funny. As all those items you mentioned arent going to do as much damage as a gun. Do you truly believe that the Virginia Tech shooter would have done as much damage, if he had a knife or bat. Probably not.

Your to damn brainwashed and ignorant to even think before you speak. Which that can be seen in your idiotic comment on banning anything that can be seen as a weapon. Which is a common idiotic and thoughtless idea most NRA point out, as they want to keep the guns which they never use to protect anyone in the first place. Where are all of you NRA when these shootings happen, out hunting or at the firing range likely.

Oh, also what would have happened if he had a gun, instead of a bow. Instead of 3 dead, their would have been thirty. Stop being stupid and ignorant and think.

In case you haven't noticed, the current administration is considering banning all weapons that have been used by the military! What the average person doesn't get is that means all firearms including flintocks and percussion black powder guns, of course the proverbial assault weapon, and that would mean also bow and arrows and sling shots and spears etc! Every weapon made is a carry over from one that was used in war! Technically, even a rock could be considered an assault weapon. The idiots in Washington forget, according to the bible, the first murder was committed with the jaw bone of an ass when cain slew abel!

To all those saying guns are meant to kill therefore they should be banned: What happens when a criminal with a gun breaks into YOUR home with the intent to kill? Unless you live right next door to the police station, chances are you are going to have members of your family killed right in front of you. Course, if you owned a gun you could have defended yourself. And before anyone tries to use this argument: I'm pretty sure most victims of violent crime had that same "oh that would never happen in MY town/neighborhood/block" right up to the day it happened to them.

Like everyone else says: GUNS DO NOT MAKE PEOPLE KILL OTHER PEOPLE. Quit trying to fix the problem by treating symptoms, get to the root cause, and only THEN will the murder and crime rates begin to decline.

My machete is a very useful tool. I use it to clear brush and shrubs. Yet in recent conflicts in Africa the machete has been responsible for around a million deaths. There is no bounds to the idiocy of the fools that wish to ban any device that may be lethal.

Meanwhile condolences to the families of the victims may they find strength and comfort.

Amused, it was in the list of proposed guns to be banned released by the justice dept. It has been in several newspapers and on the internet. After the listing of certain guns by names and models, it included a list of things that would make any not mentioned to be illegal. One of the things mentioned was "any weapon originally used by the military!" along with the usual pistol grip, magazine capacity etc. Just because I read more than you do and research some of things before I respond, does not give you the right to call me names although that is the liberal way. When you are left without a valid answer, call people names! BTW I am a 66 year old vietnam vet and I do not have MY head in the sand!

Again, do you have a link to said list, or do you know the name of it? I'm not finding anything on Google whilst searching for DoJ weapons ban etc.... As for "name calling" being the liberal way... please, you're a 66 year old Vietnam vet, you should know better. Both sides call each other plenty of names.

I ask all of you to read my first comment again. If you can't figure out the twisted humor in making fun of the gun nuts you missed the point. If someones intent is to kill someone it doesn't matter what they use.

TO say if he had a gun a lot more people would have been killed isn't accurate either. If he only intended to kill certain people then that is all he killed. He could have carried 20 arrows with him, he could have gone out and killed more but he didn't. If your really good you can kill several people with a knife as it is quite, easliy conceled and if done right can kill someone without them making a warning sound.

People are going to kill, if they want to kill, no matter what. Their tool of choise can be anything. I am not condoning it I was just making fun of people who think that the only murders happen with guns and want to ban them. them when someone kills with a bow and arrow we'll ban them until we ban everything including "butter knifes and rocks". Get the point.

The only weapons ban I know from DOJ is (or used to be) assault weapons and weapons magazines which held more than 9 bullets. That ban was lifted or let expire since there was no indication that the ban had any effect on criminal weapons use.

However, I don't remember Bow & Arrows being part of the ban.

Let's look at it this way. Do you truly believe that the Virgina Tech gunman coudn't have found another way to kill dozens of people or the Columbine killers or the movie theater killer? If you are bent on killing your weapon of choice is limitless. You want to talk about numbers! Imagine this.....

No guns. The movie theater killer goes into the movie with a pyrotechnic bomb. Maybe several. He sets them off in the theater at all the exits (3) bombs total). Everyone inside burns to death. Or maybe just explosives with nails. Sling a few of them around. Or maybe like in Iraq, they just use a suicide vest. Get off your high horse and quit being a gun phobe. People will use WHATEVER they need to do what they are going to do. To many ways to kill lots of people. The TIRED arguement that with a gun you can kill more people which is why we need to take away guns is STUPID. Someone could kill way more with a bomb, the directions can be found on the internet, they can be hidden in clothes. It just hasn't come to that yet HERE. Just ask any Iraq or Viet Nam vet how many people were killed with bombs hidden in clothes.

I know you have to protest something to feel important but at least find a subject that is worth winning.

I'd much rather have someone with an assault rifle than a bow or crossbow coming after me. You can hear the report of a rifle a hella lot better than you can hear a bow or bolt in flight.

The Crossbow has often been referred to as "The Ultimate Urban Assault Weapon" - it's nearly silent, completely deadly, and broadheads are very easy to coat with poisons or biological agents. And they'll punch right through kevlar vests.

Indigo-Rage, the problem with relying on the report of a rifle to warn you that someone is trying to kill you is that, depending on the muzzle velocity and distance to target, the bullet may very well arrive first. The rifle report only warns the second victim. Whether the rifle or the crossbow makes a better assault weapon is not the real issue. How to keep people from killing other people is the real question.

Probably a Libra. Married to one years ago, and he was an uncaring, selfish nut case. He also had a gun collection and bows and arrows. When and if we outlaw all of these weapons, the only people that will own them will be the criminals. They'll find a way to get them.

May we presume the weapon was not a modified dart gun?

No, sharpened #2 pencils were not found piercing the bodies. Take another bong hit, things will be ok.

Well, we are lucky enough to not have to worry about this stuff in Wyoming...most of the time. Casper may be the 2nd largest city in WY but its pretty small. Thoughts and prayers for the Casper community, and most of all, for those directly involved.

Casper isn't THAT small of a town! I've been there, it's pretty big. Traffic is nuts. Interesting choice of weapons though, in a state that does not require a permit for concealed carry of a firearm.

It is relatively small...big for WY! I live in WY and I can't say that there is any town in WY that can be considered big haha fine with me though! I suppose if someone wants to kill people, it doesn't really matter what kind of laws there are! I see your point though. Must have just been what was most accessible for the person :(

Daryl uses a cross bow. this guy used a bow. if you want a better reference try hunger games which attributed to an increase in bow and arrow interest. :)

It's Casper WY for God's sake, the cops don't need to carry guns because two-thirds of everyone else does. And even as the world's biggest liberal, that's fine with me. I like the first and second ammendments.

If you totalled up ALL the school shootings in the past century, could we get to 100? That'd take us back to 1912, folks. Don't count on any laws changing on this one, Wyoming is a good state, not prone to idiocy like restricting freedoms. That state deals with the criminal, not the tool. Mostly got their heads on straight - that fresh air and clean water, you know. Been there, moving back.

In 1957 the kid across the road brought a .22 cal. PEN to grade school & fired it off in class,

it came from an ad in the back of a comic book, cost $1.99 thru the mail .

No one was injured & he was sent home for the day...book closed .
