'Bow and arrow-type' attack leaves 3 dead in Casper, Wyo., including 2 in college classroom, officials say

Dan Cepeda / Casper Star-Tribune

Students and faculty mingle outside the police line on the Casper College campus Friday, Nov. 30, as police investigate a homicide.

Updated at 7:11 p.m. ET: A man killed a woman in Casper, Wyo., on Friday and then headed to the campus of Casper College, where he killed a man in front of students during a science class before killing himself, police said.

Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The man used "an edged weapon" — earlier described by police, college officials and eyewitnesses as a "bow and arrow-type" weapon — in all three killings, including his own suicide, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

Walsh wouldn't identify any of the victims, including the killer, pending notification of their families. College officials said the man who was targeted in the classroom was a faculty member, whom they also wouldn't immediately identify.

Walsh did say that all three victims were adults who knew one another and that the killer wasn't a current student at the college. The incident didn't appear college-related, he said.

The man appeared to have acted alone. "There is no one at large, and there is no threat of violence," Walsh said Wednesday afternoon.

Police found the two men on the third floor of the community college's physical science center, where they had been called to investigate a "traumatic injury" at about 9 a.m. (11 a.m. ET), Walsh said. Shortly after they arrived, they received a similar call involving an address about two miles from campus, where they found the dead woman.

All told, 33 local, state and federal officers responded at the campus, which was locked down temporarily while police checked for other suspects, authorities said. An alert on the community college's website said that all classes and activities had been canceled and that counselors were being provided for the colleges faculty, students and staff.

Casper College is a two-year community college of 4,400 students in Wyoming's second-largest city.

The school has a small security team on campus, but they're not armed.

"It's such a small town that Casper police is very close," Fujita said.

three people is not mass murder UNLESS it's done with a gun OR they are a minority

    @pemi,

With a bow and arrow I would consider this mass murder. The traditional definition of mass murder is 4 or more people being killed in a relatively short time.

Dawg...I think you may be referring to a spree killer. Still, it doesn't really matter in the long run. Being shot with an arrow is a tough way to go. The razor sharp tip cuts every time the victim moves and, depending on where the entrance wound is, the victim would bleed to death--sometimes not all that quickly. I am a rifle hunter and don't use a bow for that reason. Too many weekend warriors that don't take a bow and arrow seriously and practice so that the chances of wounding game is lessened. I have seen the results of wounded game that have received a bad shot from a bow and it is very sad. Responsible bow hunters are given a bad rap because of those that take a shot they shouldn't. Off subject, I know, but I have a thing about making sure that you are proficient with whatever weapon you choose to use as a hunting tool. Very sad for these victims and their families. My condolences.

Colorblind, I had to go back and re-read the article. I didn't catch the part where one of the three victims was at a different location. So, yes this would be a spree killer. MY BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dawg...Not a big deal in the whole scheme of things. They all kill--some more than others. Just making the point that this seems more like a spree killing, but, we do not have enough information to know that yet. Could be a good old fashioned murder/suicide. Maybe, he/she actually knew the victims and they were targeted for some reason that we are not yet aware of.

Remember, this was not a firearms incident...

Unless the arrow was on fire.

Or unless the arrow had an explosive head.

            Nuthin?

If a person wanted to kill a large number of people fairly indiscriminately, bows & arrows, knives & guns are not the way to go.

Properly used, one could kill a lot more with 10 gallons of gasoline and some matches than with guns. (example: fire at a dance club or disco)

Too many knee-jerk reacters out there who want to legislate away stupidity or human nature. More laws and more government are not the solution.

A bow and arrow can't be much of a weapon against guns

Three people are dead. They never heard what hit them.

Actually they probably did...arrows do not break the sound barrier and crossbows and bows do in fact make noise...

Only one person was killed with an arrow- the father. The son and the father's girlfriend were killed by knife. And since it was done in a classroom environment, I suspect he saw it coming...

This just goes to show that when a person wants to hurt someone else, they will find a way. This one should really confuse the gun control nuts. We will have to ban "assault" bows or quivers that hold more than 5 arrows.

The cops are never "close enough" and unarmed security guard is useless. I guess we need to go after the bow and arrows now since they kill, not the person loading or releasing the arrow. It's not their fault.

And many say Guns are the Problem??? What Fools these Mortals be with the ongoing insane diatribe about guns being the Major Problem...Guns, Bows, Knives, Swords…Whatever! Our Country is in an ongoing and present state of "Declining Morality"! Do you need some graphic proof? Go to a Movie or turn on your TV or surf the Web.....What will you find? You will find an ongoing scenario depicting scenes of violence and acts of hatred against all citizens in general!! Check the "GAMES" being sold today which celebrate the killing and torture of people in every mode know to man! Everything points to a compulsive mix of "Blood Lust and Violence"...WE LIVE IN A WORLD that encourages, and in many instances, promotes these violent actions. And in relation to the Morality Issue, just go to the same sources and it is all there for you 24/7.....We do a Great Job of teaching our children and "feeble Minded" people how to live their lives!! Parents today, for the most part, are wimps and have absolutely no parental control over "their little darlings"....And Sadly, many kids are born and don't even know who their father is .......Very Sad!! A Major problem are all the Nasty Little Gang Bangers sporting colors and looking like they are carrying "a load" in their pants demanding respect! If we could face up to the Gang Problem and begin to eradicate them, by any means necessary, we would solve MANY Problems! I honestly believe that our "Once Great Nation" is now playing out the Final Days Of a "Modern Roman Empire"! We currently live in a nation of infestation and vermin brought on by ourselves! Political Correctness and Bleeding Hearts have made a Major contribution to our sad current state! Weapons are not are problem! Our problems are Misinformed, Uneducated, Over Political Sensitive and just "Plain BAD People".....

But compare the random CROSSBOW murder with..oh I dont know..the THOUSANDS of gun murders that go on EVERY single solitary year in the U.S. I mean, REALLY? I find this type of mass murder "refreshing" actually.. At least this cat used some creativity! (I really hope you all understand the sarcasm..mass murder is unacceptable on all levels..shame I have to qualify my statements..but people are STUPID..dont believe me? There is a gun murder every day in the U.S. and STUPID-ASS people here STILL believe guns aren't the problem. ...STUPID.)

um, so if we take guns away, the people that follow the laws won't have them... you think criminals will all of the sudden stop getting guns? criminal acts are perpetrated by criminals after all... not the law abiding citizens.

Also how do you propose keeing guns from coming into the US? We can't keep people out, let alone what they are carrying/transporting..... there will always be a supply to the criminals, and until it can be guaranteed that they won't have a gun.....

I think I would rather have a fighting chance, otherwise just may as well give all your stuff away, take away others rights to hunt for their family so they too become government dependant on food, and let the criminals have all the rights, because in that scenario, those with the power (firepower) will be in charge.

Why can't people just get into fist fights anymore? Every one walks away at least in that scenario. Or barring violence... talk to the person you have an issue with or bring your problem to whoever is their boss? Hate the professor? Transfer classes......transfer schools.....go online.... there is always another option and taking someone elses life, even yours, is not a viable option.

Not all people walk away from fist fights. Of the 12,996 murders in 2010, 745 of those were from fist, hands, or feet. More people die from hands, fists, or feet than by assault weapons on an annual basis. This number does not include strangulation, drowing, or asphyxiation where someone would use their hands to commit the act.

Lil...Times have changed. What used to be called a bar fight is now called assault. What happens during fist fights these days is different. The losing party pulls a knife or a gun or the winning party doesn't play by the "old" rules. After the person is down, they now feel compelled to stomp on his/her head....There is no such thing as a fair fight anymore. People have to take it to the extremes. They don't just walk away and are friends again the next day when they sober up. I think it has something to do with a lack of honor.
