'Bow and arrow-type' attack leaves 3 dead in Casper, Wyo., including 2 in college classroom, officials say

Dan Cepeda / Casper Star-Tribune

Students and faculty mingle outside the police line on the Casper College campus Friday, Nov. 30, as police investigate a homicide.

Updated at 7:11 p.m. ET: A man killed a woman in Casper, Wyo., on Friday and then headed to the campus of Casper College, where he killed a man in front of students during a science class before killing himself, police said.

Follow M. Alex Johnson on Twitter and Facebook.

The man used "an edged weapon" — earlier described by police, college officials and eyewitnesses as a "bow and arrow-type" weapon — in all three killings, including his own suicide, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

Walsh wouldn't identify any of the victims, including the killer, pending notification of their families. College officials said the man who was targeted in the classroom was a faculty member, whom they also wouldn't immediately identify.

Walsh did say that all three victims were adults who knew one another and that the killer wasn't a current student at the college. The incident didn't appear college-related, he said.

The man appeared to have acted alone. "There is no one at large, and there is no threat of violence," Walsh said Wednesday afternoon.

Police found the two men on the third floor of the community college's physical science center, where they had been called to investigate a "traumatic injury" at about 9 a.m. (11 a.m. ET), Walsh said. Shortly after they arrived, they received a similar call involving an address about two miles from campus, where they found the dead woman.

All told, 33 local, state and federal officers responded at the campus, which was locked down temporarily while police checked for other suspects, authorities said. An alert on the community college's website said that all classes and activities had been canceled and that counselors were being provided for the colleges faculty, students and staff.

Casper College is a two-year community college of 4,400 students in Wyoming's second-largest city.

The school has a small security team on campus, but they're not armed.

"It's such a small town that Casper police is very close," Fujita said.

I guess this shows all the libtard anti gun nuts that you can kill multiple people with something other than a firearm. I'm also wondering what he used, I don't think it was a crossbow because you have to cock and load them and that takes time. Certianly enough time for others to escape after the first shot.

He killed his dad first then went to the College and killed his dad's girlfriend ( a professor) then cut his own throat and plunged the knife into his own chest, also he was a Meth addict. And yes according to what was reported to Casper/Natrona County centeral dispatch it was a cross bow. Used it on his dad first then stabbed his Dad's girlfriend through the back of the head right at the spinal connection to the brain. And that is from eye witnesses, including students in her class. So those are the facts hope this makes you all warm and fuzzy.

Those writing this are seriously deficient in so may facts. This shooting was done with a crossbow. The "arrows" are called "bolts". One would have a real difficult time killing themselves with a bow. Just stupid reporting.

Good thing he didn't have a Toyota Pious. He could have run over and killed anyone within 526 miles of him before even having to reload.

Nobody needs cars with that kind of fuel range- they're only good for killing lots of people.

Please tell me you all are being satirical (look it up if you need to) if you don't get it that the ready availability of a weapon is needed for these tragic deaths of innocents by the ever increasing group of marginally coping Americans. The most available and lethal weapons are guns.

Plenty more human lives need to be lost to the bow and arrow before it qualifies for a need to be controlled. No argument can be drawn from this tragedy.

It's a love triangle, and it seems the two men were after the one woman. Wonder if they will continue in their animosity in the hereafter.

ATTENTION: BOW HUNTERS: We value human life and out decisions are not based out of logic, rather what we fling to the ceiling and see if it sticks. Congress will now ban all quivers that hold more than two arrows. All arrowheads will now be produced out of Nerf materials. Please destroy any quivers you own, along with the assault-arrowheads you currently possess. Thank you and have a swell day.

This is typical - shows how real idiots ignore common sense and present an extreme "all or nothing" rant to try to make a point. Someone like this should probably be on medication and be closely monitored - they are ready to snap. I had one who said he understands the point of limiting magazines to 10-12 rounds, but "what about when you are attacked by a flash mob"... I've not heard of this happening - ever.

To the many Gun Dolts here.... Yes we know that the person kills, not the weapon, but as we see here, it's VERY hard to wipe out most of a movie theatre or classroom with a bow and arrow, crossbow, whatever. There NEEDS to be regulation on high capacity magazines so such a nutcase can't keep killing people until his weapon jams. Remember that only single shot weapons were available when our Forefathers wrote the 2nd.

And they'll be falling out of the woodwork now...

I always wonder when I read these stories, what type mental equation is used by the killer to justify his homicidal frenzy?

What could these two people have possibly done to him to justify such a crime?

                            Love triangle?

What is an edged weapon that's like a bow and arrow? If it's a crossbow call it that. What kind of reporting is this? When I lived in Ottawa where handguns are illegal, a man shot his wife on Bank Street with a crossbow, in broad daylight on a business day. Good shot. It caused quite a stir. But not to make light of it, it does make you wonder.

I was surprised that the police spokesman can't identify the weapon used. Wyoming is a hunting state, after all. (when I went to high school there we could receive two excused absences a year for hunting) Maybe it's an "exotic" or custom bow, probably fairly small so it's concealable under a bulky jacket. Even in Wyoming, someone walking around campus with a crossbow is likely to attract attention!
