100 'AK-style' rifles stolen from Atlanta boxcar

Federal authorities were hunting Friday for more than 100 rifles stolen from a boxcar parked in an Atlanta train yard.

The weapons were taken from a CSX rail yard on the city's northwest side in mid-November, said Richard Coes, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The weapons include assault rifles that Coes described as "AK-style." He declined to discuss other aspects of the case.

Gary Sease, a spokesman for rail line CSX Corp., said the Jacksonville, Fla.-based company is cooperating with law enforcement to recover the weapons and investigate the theft.

The rifles were stolen on or around Nov. 12, authorities said. The boxcar was parked at the CSX Tilford Yard about four miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.

The Tilford Yard is one of the company's major rail yards in Georgia, according to the company's website.

Inside job. How else would they know which car to go to in a rail yard? Another failed obama secret mission.

"Can't understand it" said Bevo McIntire, owner of Bevo's Guns in Jacksonville. The boxes were clearly marked AK-47s and they only sat there with the tops off the crates for 4 months.

Fortunately, we had them insured for full value, $5 each.

    Must have been some kids.

When the government imposes unconstitutional restrictions on arms, what do you expect Tea Patriots to do? Civil disobedience against federal tyranny has been a part of the American ethos since King George's time.

Outlaw Guns and only the criminals will have Guns. I guess this theft makes those words very true. And this sounds like an Inside job if ever I heard of one.

Xerxes is close to right. Assault rifles are select fire weapon with semi, burst or full auto. The BATF says AK style assault weapons because that's the governments say so to further their anti gun agenda. The guns of "fast and furious" weren't assault rifles either--they just looked like them.

An Ak 47 is the last rife that I need , no pun intended. I have all of the other calibers. I would settle for a SKS .

        Get the Yugo SKS.

        It is the best.

        All milled receiver parts.

        Nothing stamped.

AND the grenade launcher can have slots cut in the top of the rings to make a great compensator.

        I love my SKS.

I have two, one is sporterized the other is original.

Attention all gun grabbers, 100 semi-auto rifles have been stolen. You must immediately run around in a circle while screaming & waving your arms in the air. Then you need to hurry & ban all guns, flush the constitution down the toilet, round up all gun owners, confiscate all of their guns/ammo, & then lock the gun nuts up in prison camps.

Only then will you be safe...If these steps are not followed immediately the gun nuts will mow you & your family down in a hail of bullets with those 100 stolen rifles, right before the world ends.

AK-47 style rifles. Typical press mis-reporting. Are they AK-47's? Are they fully automatic (ie a machine gun) as a real AK-47. Or are they converted to semi automatic? Or do they just have a pistol grip and "look" like an AK-47? Makes a big difference people! While I am a gun rights supporter, I certainly dont want 100 fully automatic (machine guns) AK-47's in the hands of those who will steal guns from trains.

          Reply#71 - Fri Nov 30, 2012 8:36 PM EST

My guess would be semi-autos since they said AK-47 style.

PDB machine guns? AK's are ASSAULT rifles. Machine guns/pistols are in a different class. AK's are probably the worlds most popular ASSAULT rifle because you can dump a truckload of sand on them and they will still fire. A very reliable weapon but less accurate than an AR or an ACR type rifle.

But that 7.62 round has a slight advantage over the 5.56, don't ya think?

My first thought was that this is an inside job. I see I'm not the only super sleuth who thinks that way. But how else would you explain it really? I can't imagine that some thief just happened onto it. No way. They had inside information on this job. You can believe that the ATF were all over everyone who had knowledge of this particular shipment.

Jim you're right. Nobody knows what's in rail cars except the shipper, customer and carrier. The sheer luck that would be involved opening up random boxcars, only to find 100 AK style weapons would be enormous. Boxcars tend to have horrendously hard doors to open up by hand because of damage to the door/ door tracks by forklifts unloading them. I have had to open/ close box car doors with a come-a-long a million times.

Especially if it was a brand new in the box HK91. Too bad you can't get them new any more, but there is a used market.

That FPS Russia guy on you tube has a large acreage in GA. Perhaps this is where he is getting many of those crazy weapons he's always shooting off in his videos? (not serious - just coincidental) I personally love his videos. Especially when he blows up apocalyptic zombies!

                        As always....Have Nice Day!

It had to be an inside job because those box cars are not labeled as to their contents on the outside. I wonder if this is how the Zombies are going to be armed or just another failed or supervised Homeland Security and ATF operation especially with not making it public for nearly a month. And how come all the Cameras or at least one of the Cameras covering the Rail yard didn't provide an adequate view of the suspects. Just too many questions here for me not to feel something is or was really amiss. Is this a trend? How many other shipments say in Chicago or Philadelphia etc. etc. were hijacked? Or the Government set this up to try and do another end run around the Constitution I mean look at what the ATF did for Mexico and with this Administration, they'd do it in heartbeat to rid the private person of his protection in order to make you their slaves..Remember it was their fellow black tribesman in Africa who sold their neighbors into slavery via the Portuguese...And the Southern Plantation owners were a majority of Demoncrats...

Contrary to popular belief and unknowing opinions, I can assure you that this was likely a random act. I speak from first hand experience. I drove big truck and my last employer in that field was one of the big three of the trucking industry and I pulled containers out of the Harrisburg PA rail yard.

Rail cars are tempting targets as they often sit in a yard for a day or two while being swapped to trains going where they need to get to. Especially this time of year, as there are often high end electronics and other expensive items. Firearms are just icing on the cake.

I actually pulled one container from the yard to a local distribution facility and when the doors were opened, the box was empty. Even with the high security lock on the doors. It appears that some enterprising people in Chicago (the only place where the cars were still long enough to get into) cut open the tops of the container and stole the contents. Oh, it was discovered, it wasn't just the box I had, it was multiple containers and nothing was common among any. Some were electronics (mine was large flat panel TV's), some food products, some were clothes. Most (except the food) were emptied.
