Wyoming killings: Man stabbed dad's girlfriend, then shot arrow at dad in class, cops say

CASPER, Wyo. -- Police released more details Saturday of a grisly murder-suicide at a Wyoming community college, saying a man shot his father in the head with a bow and arrow in front of a computer science class not long after fatally stabbing his father's live-in girlfriend at their home a couple miles away.

Computer science instructor James Krumm, 56, may have saved some of his students' lives Friday by giving them time to flee while trying to fend off his son, Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," he said, adding that his actions could offer some measure of comfort to those affected by the killings.

He said police still were trying to figure out what motivated Christopher Krumm to attack his father and girlfriend, 42-year-old Heidi Arnold, a math instructor at the college. Arnold was found stabbed to death in front of the home she shared with James Krumm.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom, Walsh said.

Police arrived to find James Krumm dead and Christopher Krumm barely living; the younger Krumm died soon after students fled in a panic. Authorities locked down the campus for two hours.

Reports began coming in about the attack on Arnold soon after the campus attack.

Christopher Krumm had smuggled the compound bow — a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow — onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.

He said Krumm also had two knives with him.

If a gun was involved we would have 600 comment per hour. A bow and arrow, 0 comments in 16 minutes.

Because if a gun was involved there could have been three times the deaths.

You guys are f&cking idiots; clearly this was a crime of passion with the motive to kill his father and his father's girlfriend...If that were the case, he would have shot others with the bow as well. If he had a firearm, the score would still be three dead: His father's girlfriend, his father, and then himself.

You anti-gun advocates out there salivate at the next event where a criminal goes on a shooting spree to speak up and try to prevent us law-abiding citizens from our right to own firearms. Go f&ck yourselves like the sheep you are; I refuse to be a victim.

If only he had a gun, he could have killed so many more people. What a missed opportunity.

@ tryreality you have a point

This type of crime is rare in WY----EVEN or ESPECIALLY with a gun. Mostly those who try it are from away.

Sorry dude. I'll connect the dots for you and those like o.o below. Senseless killing of innocents such as this tragedy require increasingly psychologically fragile Americans and a weapon of destruction. In this case, a bow used for killing or sport. Guns are, however, the most readily available weapon and will continue to be the weapon at hand for most for further tragedies thanks to the lobbying efforts of the gun industry, NRA and concealed carry folks.

So what you're telling us Kama', is that you'd prefer to live in a society where only thugs, bangers, and sociopaths have guns.

Good solution, especially since the bad guys have far more fire power than cops.

BTW, guns are not the most readily available weapon. For that you have to go to the kitchen. There are at least a couple of dozen in mine.

If taking out large number of people were the intent, no doubt he would have used a gun. He came to school to kill one person- his father, and maybe himself.

Unfortunately, jakatze, so many of the people who think they are "normal" gun owners ARE sociopaths. I know too many people with NRA window stickers who fit that bill...

The crazies don't go off to war: Some of them send the best and brightest and the most honorable to war, like the parcel carry-out kid in the grocery store, who wanted to be a medical doctor if he survived, and hoped that the G.I. Bill would help him.

People have been murdering each other since the beginning of time. Civilian murder is not a result of peace time or war time. It is a result of human nature. Some people just snap, you never know what happened to them as a child or if they accidently ate some molded bread. Others, are mentally ill. Some people are bullied and taunted all their life and just can't take it anymore. Gun control will not prevent anyone from being murdered, nor does the law and neither does God. For all you professors who think you have it figured out, well . . . . you don't.

I love it when people say that if we got rid of all the guns then only bad guys would have guns. LOL, too funny. We pay a militia to carry guns around and protect us, they call them the police, national guard, army, marines, navy air force, so on and so on. To say only bad guys would have guns is just plain silly. Besides, most of the killing is being done by these so called descent people who have gun permits. Remember, can't shoot someone with a gun if you don't own one.

It isn't going to change the fact that gun 'ownership' has nothing to do with someone obtaining a gun for killing.

0.0, I own guns and have them in several countries, including my native U.S. And yes, I have them legally and use them correctly in places other than in America. So, I don't worry about guns; only about gun owners like you who seem to be too unstable.

@Suds. While it's looking less likely, a love triangle could still be a possibility. The lady in question was dating a guy 14 years her senior and it's not out of the realm of possibility that she was dallying with a guy 17 years younger than herself especially in this day of the cougar. I am thinking though it is also a possibility that maybe Chris Crumm was living at his father's home and dad's girlfriend convinced her boyfriend to throw his son out. In fact that one is in the lead with me now as the article says that the woman was dad's live-in girlfriend although I'll admit there is nothing provided yet that says Chris Crumm lived with his father. I just think it's a possibility since there have been many articles about older children moving back in with their parents during hard times in the last decade.

I think more people should use the old standbys, like garrotes, stilettos, and paving stones, as it keeps it much more personal, and requires that you physically engage your victim, even if only for a second. The sense of satisfaction you get from a shiv well-placed is much greater than that from the near-anonymity of firing a projectile from a distance. You actually get to feel something, such as their blood running onto your shoes, or the twitching of their body as you tighten that garrote, or that last look up as the paving stone comes crashing down on the seam between the parietal and frontal bones, performing a crude, but effective lobotomy. Nobody seems to take much pride in their work anymore.

We need to ban all sharp and/or pointy objects immediately- they are evil objects. Nobody needs to have a bunch of sharp and/or pointy objects- they're only good for one thing: killing a bunch of people. This is yet another victory for all those sharp and/or pointy object nuts, who won't be satisfied until there's blood running down our streets like a river, from all of their sharp and/or pointy objects.

I can leave my vehicle unlocked, with the keys in it, and don't have to worry that someone would take it. Could you? We have low taxes, and a balanced state budget. Animals require a great deal of time, love and expenses. Far more then many people realize. They also cause problems people never anticipated because many people don't take the time to educate themselves on what animals actually need specifically. Such as social behaviors, adequate diets, enough companionship and proper discipline Leading to problems within both within their communities and nationally recognized problems such as unwanted pets needing to be destroyed, barking issues, bites, animal abuse and attacks.Research has found, those who are required to invest funds in animals up front as pets, tend to be better caretakers then those can't afford to pay anything. But they can enrich lives greatly when properly cared for.

People who have mental health issues or violence issues aren't going to magically have them vanish with a pet. They will still act them out, only on pets. While Family feuds have been around since man has been. This tragic case would have happened no matter what era, with whatever weapons or means were available. We don't know the reasons, but cases have been recorded going back thousands of years of family members killing each other for different reasons. Including lovers, royalty such as kings, pharaohs and the like. It's simply in our human nature to find reasons mixed with our emotions. I hope those who are now struggling with the terrible consequences of this recent event will be able to find some measure of peace in the coming days ahead.

A very SMALL percentage of people with mental illnesses are violent people - we only hear about the violent ones ad nauseam in the media. To infer that every mentally ill person will eventually butcher their pets and/or family members is disgusting.

I will remind you again, just so you get it into your thick anti gun head. Guns are not the most readily available weapon. The weapon that was used in this case was a "KNIFE". Read the article before you go on a rant. He killed his fathers girlfriend with a "KNIFE". He then shot his Dad with an aroow and the Stabbed himself and then killed his Dad with a "KNIFE". I can go into any home, business, or government facility anywhere and find this weapon of mass destruction. So let's start an Anti-Knife coalition and start lobbying to ban all knifes in the world. These weapons are truely the most deadliest weapon of mass destruction because they actually cause the most destruction in the world.

He did read the article he was from Vernon Conn. You post but do not read.

Computer science instructor James Krumm, 56, may have saved some of his students' lives Friday by giving them time to flee while trying to fend off his son, Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

So it isn't Wyoming people doing the killing, it is those crazies from back east who voted for Obama.

One point seems to be missing. If you are anti-gun, please continue reading. This is Wyoming. A hunter's paradise. Guns are part of the culture. We enjoy some of he most open gun laws in the country, yet we have little gun-related crime. This disturbed young man used a compound bow and a knife to perform these heinous and tragic acts. Do you not think he would have been able to EASILY obtain a gun? In my little town of 10,000 people, there are a dozen places to buy a gun. That doesn't even touch the ones sold in the classified ads every day. A good quality compound bow costs nearly as much as an inexpensive handgun, and more than a quality hunting rifle. And, for the record, I am a combat veteran who does NOT own a gun or hunt. I choose NOT to exercise my right to do so. I do, however, believe in the Constitution and it's Bill of Rights. It's not so much about the right to bear arms as it is intruding upon the rights of others. We have already lost rights provided for in the Constitution. The more we do so, the more we not only tread upon the sacrifices made by our founding fathers, but we also set precedent for the Federal Government to pick and choose which rights we are actually allowed to have.

Gun related crime IS a problem. However, gun control is obviously not the answer. It just plain doesn't work. It merely provides the black market with another opportunity to make money. Do you honestly believe that a gang member is concerned with gun control laws? Do you honestly believe any gang bangers belong to the NRA? How many perpetrators of these gun related crimes read hunting magazines? How many could even tell you what the acronym NRA stands for?

You wonder what is the back story. Since the son seemed to live in Conn on the east coast and not Wyoming, there are all sorts of unanswered questions here. I am sorry that three people died but I don't think this is a case similar to Aurora.

It sure seems like 95% of these murder-suicide, mass killing cowards are in their early to mid-20’s. Just saying.

My opinion: I bet the kid and his dad's girlfriend were getting it on or she was interfering with his life with his dad.

Since he killed his Dad, my bet is that he was doing his dads girlfriend and it went too far.

Drugs, Alcohol, or Sex -- one of those three - Maybe all three?

                          What a absolute shame..

                          OR COULD BE:

                          He Worshipped Satin

                          He Hated Teachers

                          He Heard Voices

                          He Was A Vampire Wannabe

OR JUST POSIBLY, HE SUFFERED FROM A MENTAL ILLNESS...PERHAPS???

MAYBE somebody who knew him will shed some "FACTUAL" light on the story?

Condolences to the family and friends of all 3 victims. :(

Well, I never liked Teachers either. Of course, I refer to the Scotch Whisky by that name. You'll never see me wearing satin anything. Hearing voices is commonplace among those with functioning hearing, and enables verbal communication. Not hearing voices is where problems start. Is Vampire Wannabe a new sect of Islam? Yes, it is possible he suffered from a MENTAL ILLNESS, and I believe the DSM code for it is most likely 666, which is a psychiatrist's shorthand for being completely frigging nuts.

You're right. We shouldn't judge someone who murdered two people.

I'm sorry. I really should be more understanding and sympathetic towards the murderer.

Many mental illnesses set in between the ages of 18-29, give or take a couple of years. I can't help but wonder if this is not what occurred. Until we get the whole backstory, we can only suppose. This was a terrible tragedy. Many sympathies and condolences to the families.

He never dated, just worked, smoked weed and ate (mostly honey buns, twinkies & little debbies)...I always joked that Kenny lost his virginity to Little Debbie. My brother was the one who found him. Only 47, but he died living the way he wanted I guess?

Dude probably watched The Walking Dead. Life imitates art, and there's several bow shots to the head every week on that show.

This man killed his father and his father's girlfriend before killing himself. An NFL player killed his girlfriend then himself. That's just two of who knows how many murder/suicides committed this day. The original poster was correct, if a gun had been used then the typical calls for bans on firearms would have gone out. For a society that is immersed in violence, from news to television to video games, is it any wonder that these incidents continue to occur?

Bows and arrows should be outlawed. The right to bear arms does not apply to lethal weapons like compound or cross bows. Automatic assault rifles...that's another story. Every red blooded American should have one around the house.
